From "Hogwarts Ghosts" by JK Rowling on Pottermore:
Note that "the pox" is syphilis.
D + H = 1st cousins
D's kids + H's kids = 2nd cousins
D + H's kids = 1st cousins, once removed
H + D's kids = 1st cousins, once removed.
Cousins in the same generational level share a set of grandparents (1st cousins), great-grandparents (2nd cousins), great-great-grandparents (3rd cousins) and so on.
If the cousins are on different generational levels, then they are "removed". Once removed for one generation apart, twice removed for 2 generations apart and so on.
It would certainly explain her intelligence, the only problem is that Rowling has explicitly denied it. :(
Defined as "the crime of unlawfully killing a person especially with malice aforethought."
Since the Death Eaters were attacking Hogwarts and the students, Neville was acting in the defense of himself and others, so I'd say the distinction between kill and murder is definitely applicable here.
According to this chart, the full moon would have risen at 02:33 UTC, which would be 3:33 am in BST of the morning of that day. Lupin may well have transformed that night (perhaps after taking Wolfsbane), and still made it to King's Cross by 11 am to catch the Hogwarts Express. This may well explain why his robes were so tattered and he was sleeping on the train.
Stephen King is a huge J.K. Rowling fan. He tweets about her regularly and specifically talks about the Harry Potter series in his book "On Writing." He thinks she is one of the best writers at refreshing the reader about what happened earlier in the series seamlessly in narration.
If you look at other versions of Philosophers Stone you can see that the reason for Ravenclaw having so many more reviews than the others is that Amazon has lumped it with the other editions of the book for reviews, whereas all the other houses versions aren't. For instance it has the exact same reviews as the Illustrated Version as well as this version and a load of others.
I been wanting to do this myself! This is the perfect Nagini for the collection
I hope this doesn't get buried because more people need to read this:
Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness
^ Literally the best fanfiction I have ever read. It is longer than OOTP, completely canon (with the exception of adding information for characters we don't know much about such as Ernie Macmillan) and quite honestly if it was a real HP book it would be my favorite.
PLEASE READ.
You can find them on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MTR1AH8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_tBZLybP3CX89N I picked mine up at the local book store. This is the company that makes them http://www.fascinations.com/metalearth
Usually, you won't have much of a problem selling handmade things that are Harry Potter (or other licenced works) if you don't use any official logos or call it "Harry Potter..." because you could claim it as fanart. As long as you're not recreating something that already exists, as far as I'm aware? I would check for a creative commons license or public domain dedication before creating with the intent to sell. Hope that helps!

To summarize what I did:
This is great.
Was the Great Hall supposed to come with the invisibility cloak? My son got it with the Hogwarts Express set, but not his Great Hall.
Seconded. Adding to this, anyone who enjoys The Hunger Games should at least take a look at The Maze Runner in my opinion. They aren't the same, but the audiences tend to overlap. Not to mention, The Maze Runner is a pretty good read. I don't know if I would classify the ending as 'happy' though, since the OP's girlfriend enjoys happy endings, but I suppose it could be interpreted as such.
Ahh thanks for solving that mystery for me. I could have sworn the set I wanted had the three but when I went back to actually order it there were only two!
Looks like there's going to be a (new?) release of the three on March 14th (looks like new artwork): Hogwarts Library $23.91 USD on Amazon.
If you look at other versions of Philosophers Stone you can see that the reason for Ravenclaw having so many more reviews than the others is that Amazon has lumped it with the other editions of the book for reviews, whereas all the other houses versions aren't. This was so stupid. So a sizable portion of two schools come to Hogwarts for almost the entire school year, for a competition in which only one of the twenty-odd students gets to participate, there are only three tasks, and only one of them has any spectator value of any sort. Man, the Tournament just had so much potential, thinking back on it now (well, I guess there's always fanfiction).
Thanks so much! With a little bit of science magic! We're actually so excited as we're lucky enough to be publishing our very own unoffical HP cocktail book in the autumn :))) It's not actually out in the world yet but available for preorder:

The rules for Quidditch Pong are much like beer pong with a few changes:
Choose what team goes first with your sorting hat!
If the quaffle (ping pong ball) goes through a hoop and makes it in the cup it counts as two (much like if the ball were to bounce)
If the quaffle goes through a hoop the enemy team is allowed to use there bludgers (hands) to knock it out of the way.
When there is one cup left, the snitch must be used. Trust me, this makes things a lot more difficult. I made my snitch by just wrapping a ball in yellow duct tape and attaching a few wings made out of paper, but you could easily use a yellow ping pong ball with glued on wings.
Enjoy!!
We split the party up into houses to make the game more competitive.

I found these on Etsy, but couldn't find the one in op's post. I want Dumbledore's office candle so badly. It seems just like him.
Are you looking for just a dust jacket replacement?
Can give AbeBooks a try. With a bit of looking (they've got 200 or so PoA listings up) should be able to find a used copy with a decent dust jacket, especially since you don't care about the rest of the book.
I had the same problem. Then I read Deathly Hallows from Neville's perspective and it rocked! really well written and totally believable. It never clashes with the real thing.
linky seriously try it!
edit: for correct link.
This item does not ship to hamburg, Germany.
Noooooooooooo :(

EDIT: Oh nevermind, found it on German Amazon as well :D
Here's the link ignore the fact they state it's a baking dish, seems to be a hilarious translating mistake
Rowling stated before that because of all of the fragmenting of his soul, Voldemort's cannot be a ghost: quote of JK's quote
I'm not a very big fan fiction fan - but someone linked to this one on Reddit a while back and.... it. is. AH-MUH-ZING.
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7937889/61/A_Difference_in_the_Family_The_Snape_Chronicles
It's quite long but it's very well written, to the point and very believable in my opinion. I've been putting it off finishing the last four chapter because I really really really don't want it to end.
It's basically Snape's life from birth to death. It's wonderful.
> genial
You mean... You mean genius?
Edit: Now before anyone falsely corrects me, I know genial is a word, but it's wrongly used in this case as it means friendly
Well, floccinaucinihilipilification actually is a word. The definition has almost a self-deprecating feeling to it when using it as a name for your blog.
You should check out Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness. It's a good read, although kind of spoiled as you know how it will end, and I get continually annoyed at how much sh*t they give Snape throughout the year, he's one of the good guys, idiots!
>Summer before third year Harry has a life changing experience, and a close encounter with a dementor ends with him absorbing the horcrux within him. Features Harry with a backbone.
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4240771/1/Partially-Kissed-Hero
>The car was full of eye-witnesses, so news spread across the train very fast that Harry Potter had been at least partially kissed by a dementor. The news was treated very soberly by most, and when Draco chose to gloat about it, an irate seventh year threw him off the moving train as they just happened to be crossing a bridge.
>Crabbe and Goyle got thrown off moments later.
There's a fanfic of this very thing that I was led to by someone here. Let me find it real quick.
Edit: This is the fanfic. Credit to wcatie for showing it to me. It's really good. It's extensive and tells all about that last year. We even get some good backstory going on for other characters (Parvati, Seamus, etc).
Yep:
>‘In a surprise move last night the Ministry of Magic passed new legislation giving itself an unprecedented level of control at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
>‘“The Minister has been growing uneasy about goings-on at Hogwarts for some time,” said Junior Assistant to the Minister, Percy Weasley. “He is now responding to concerns voiced by anxious parents, who feel the school may be moving in a direction they do not approve of.”
>‘This is not the first time in recent weeks that the Minister, Cornelius Fudge, has used new laws to effect improvements at the wizarding school. As recently as 30th August, Educational Decree Number Twenty-two was passed, to ensure that, in the event of the current Headmaster being unable to provide a candidate for a teaching post, the Ministry should select an appropriate person.
>‘“That’s how Dolores Umbridge came to be appointed to the teaching staff at Hogwarts,” said Weasley last night. “Dumbledore couldn’t find anyone so the Minister put in Umbridge, and of course, she’s been an immediate success –”'
>‘She’s been a WHAT?' said Harry loudly.
>‘Wait, there’s more,' said Hermione grimly.
>‘“– an immediate success, totally revolutionising the teaching of Defence Against the Dark Arts and providing the Minister with on-the-ground feedback about what’s really happening at Hogwarts.”

> In the books, she describes Hermione as white with fear and at one point she describes her as 'brown' from being on holiday.
A fact which Rowling has addressed directly.
> "I had a bunch of racists telling me that because Hermione 'turned white' – that is, lost colour from her face after a shock – that she must be a white woman, which I have a great deal of difficulty with. But I decided not to get too agitated about it and simply state quite firmly that Hermione can be a black woman with my absolute blessing and enthusiasm." - J.K. Rowling (Source)
There will be a line of numbers on the copyright page, if the lowest number is 1 (normally at the end of the line), it is a first printing.
First printings in book one are much more valuable than first printings in the other books. Since they did not know how successful Harry Potter would be the number of books printed in the first run was pretty small.
With each book, larger and larger quantities were printed in the first run, and are a lot less rare.
Edit: For example, the first printing of Philosopher's Stone was only 500 books. Depending on condition, one would be worth $40,000-$55,000

I've only read a few fan fics but the one I would recommend to start with as it's extremely well written and fits with the canon is Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness.
It's essentially the year that is Deathly Hallows but told from Neville's perspective. So what happens at Hogwarts while the trio is gone. It's absolutely fantastic and a great place to start in terms of fan fic. The author's description: "A novel following Neville and the D.A. through the 7th year at Hogwarts under the reign of Snape and the Carrows."
I don't like all the hype around it and I blame Rowling, with all respect to her, that her statements shaped the discussion into the pointless arguing about the colour of Hermione's skin.
The discussion should be about how the director will adapt the screenplay and the Wizard world at all, what could be possibly different from what we are used to from the books and the films, what we hope or are afraid of to see in the play. And since we have already came to that, what are the reasons behind the casting and so on. I for instance really like the opinion that casting Noma Dumezweni will put the slur against Hermione's blood status to a whole new level more comperhensible in our Muggle context.
Instead, Rowling came with her: "White skin was never specified. Rowling loves black Hermione." and suddenly all the discussions were about Hermione being black, the complains why it cannot be possible and the complains why people thinking it are racists etc. Meanwhile, both groups happily dehumanise Dumezweni by seeing only her skin colour and talking about her without her, not even considering her opinion on the issue. She doesn't argue "White skin never specified so I can be Hermione". She takes casting her as a great honour and responsibility due to the fact that Harry Potter is full of archetypical characters, including Hermione, anybody can identify with and hopes she'll do her best in portraying her.
Most important, and that's what made me stop caring about the casting at all, Cursed Child is a stage play. All this hype is only about one adaptation of the play. And I probably won't even see the play as I'm not from the UK and just read the screenplay later as many others here. Once the screenplay will be accessible there will be many and many different adaptations all over the world with any cast you can imagine.
Here is the recipe I used. I tweeked it a little bit to my liking. I used a mold from amazon and stuffed the dark chocolate frogs with butterscotch chips. I added bits o' brickle to the icing before placing the frogs on. Trying to make ~~strikethrough~~fetch~~strikethrough~~ Harry Potter holidays/Christmas happen and used Thanksgiving as an opportunity to start. My in-laws loved it, but it didn't turn out quite as I would have liked especially since I was pressed for time.
Actually in British English a diary can be either.
While the line you mentioned is clearly a reference to a day planner, it's pretty clear that it's supposed to be a journal. Rowling is just playing that it's not even an ordinary boring dairy, much less one filled with secrets.
I like to think drunk Harry would be how Daniel Radcliffe played Harry under the influence of Felix Felicis. I've mentioned on other threads before that I think it is, hands down, one of the funniest scenes of that film.
Slughorn: "Harry!"
Harry: "Siiiiiiiir!"
Gets me every time. Not to mention the pincers
To quote from A Black Comedy:
>"I know," Harry admitted. "I should have been a bit clearer in that fearing a made-up name is silly, but fearing an extremely powerful ruthless dark wizard is just common sense."
>"Ahh," Sirius nodded. "Wizards aren't too good with that stuff."
>Harry looked at Sirius in confusion.
>"Common sense, I mean," Sirius added. "Your mother always told me that instead of common sense, wizards got magic. Which actually explained quite a bit," Sirius said thinking of the people that got the most magic including various Dark Lords and Albus Dumbledore.
I shall endeavor to try.
Let's do the time warp again! by Rorschach's Blot is the specific one I referenced above. If you've never read his works they are definitely worth the read. Especially Make a Wish. It's my go-to I need to crack up laughing fic. (Along with Naked Quidditch Match, and Snape's worst nightmare.)
I cannot hear the word "bubba" without thinking of that fic XD
>Fawkes, Dumbeldore's Phoenix looks on masturbating.
Is that actually possible? Do birds jerk off? Also was the "goo" he dropped on her face supposed to be bird semen? Do birds even have semen?
After the fanfic with graphic Ron/Hedwig romance/necrophilia/rape, I'm OK with anything.
It's OK. It has all the standard MMORPG elements, and it's definitely aimed at being a game children can play, though adults do play it (including adults who want to play a game with their children). It has filtered chat for child safety, though some leniency is given to accounts that are 18+. Character names are chosen by selecting from a predefined list of first and last names.
You choose a house at school, but that's to choose your character's emphasis on a certain type of spells, not to select who you'll be playing with. Combat is through a card game a bit like Magic: The Gathering where the cards are spells you can cast. You can eventually get one or more houses (as in dwellings) that you can creatively decorate.
The graphics are cartoonish and fantasy-based, but the fantasy varies. For example, the different worlds are like theme parks. The starting world is a more standard wizard fantasy. Another world is styled like Victorian England. Another is like British Egypt.
It installs very quickly on Windows and Mac (and works excellently with Wine on Linux), so it's quick and easy to try it out.
Yeah not as simplified as if they simply Transfigured themself into an animal. In that case they wouldn't even keep their human mind. The book said:
>While in their animal form, they retain most of their ability to think as a human, their own sense of identity and their memories. [...] However, feelings and emotions are simplified and they will have many animal desires
I really love the British/Canadian covers of the books (yes, Canada has the same covers as Britain). Aside from books 5 and 6 (the American ones were amazing for these ones) I think the Brit/Can covers are much more visually appealing.
Compare them here! http://www.buzzfeed.com/ashleybaccam/international-harry-potter-book-covers
There's an excellent fic that chronicles all conversations written in Tom's diary in Chamber of Secrets. Not quite from Tom's point of view, but VERY creepy and well-written.
One that has been recommended in the past:
and One that I found that I think is really good:
Also, I think it would be really cool if there could be a subreddit regarding HP fanfiction. There's good traffic regarding fanfiction, and it would be great if there was a place you could go to discuss and find any
Lmao.
Most bookstores have this set, it’s been around for awhile. Amazon also has it, Target as well.
I was curious if the original EA games were available on Amazon. They are, but <em>yikes</em>. Definitely play LEGO Harry Potter, unless you want to get the games the illegal way. :x
The LEGO games are the best anyway, but the movie tie-ins are nostalgic and fun, especially the first three. I can still hear the Hogwarts theme in my head now.
Fascinating. I read Stephen King's book On Writing recently and I was sucked into his writing process, attention to grammar details, etc. but I'm always curious about the actual process of the job. For instance, I'm a scientist, and it's funny to hear what people think about what my work is like. They make it far more interesting than it actually is! But with writers, there's got to be some sort of structure going on there. I always imagine you guys as being like a chef: you have to know what ingredients go in and at what point they're appropriate. You wouldn't make a cake and then try to fold in the eggs after.
I'm not shocked. Steven King fucking loves Harry Potter. He's written several extraordinary reviews about the books, and even said Harry will take his place with "Alice, Huck, Frodo, and Dorothy." There's also a Harry Potter reference in his novel On Writing and I think in one other, though I forgot which.
https://web.archive.org/web/20060316221450/http://www.jkrowling.com/textonly/en/faq_view.cfm?id=101 is Rowling saying that wizards do receive some kind of education before Hogwarts, and we can assume that really basic stuff like reading, writing and calculations are already learned during that stage, as with muggles.
After the age of 11, they obviously go to Hogwarts and the wizard curriculum is very different from the muggle curriculum. I don't think they really need to know much from the muggle curriculum. Of course, if a muggle-born or half-blood would at some point like to have a qualified job in the muggle world they spent their childhood in, that's simply not possible – the wizard educational system leads to a total lock-in.
And that's when the attack comes. Not from the front, but from the side. From the other two wizards you didn't even know were there. Because u/sdb2754 is a pack hunter, you see, he uses coordinated attack patterns and he is out in force today. And they cast jinxes at you with this, a six-inch wand with dragon heartstring core.
I thought that too, but turns out probably not. See http://www.abebooks.com/docs/harry-potter/hp-collecting-guide.shtml
My wife has one like yours, it was printed in Canada several years after the UK version (which is the actual first edition).
Trust me, this is nothing. Some people even ship countries. Examples: America x England, Germany x Italy.
I'm a fanfic addict and have been probably since about the time I got into HP. I think I'd only had access to the internet for a short while after I got into the series (I was around 13 and only up to the 4th book was out) and one of my first internet addictions was the AOL Harry Potter message boards. I'm pretty sure I found fanfiction through that.
Anyway, I've written some over the years and read tons. "Blood Magic" by Gateway Girl is a story I've read probably 3 or 4 times, which is more than I have read a few of my favorite books. It gives so much room to play with characters and puts them into situations that weren't possible in the timeline of the books, and in a way it makes me feel like I know the characters better when they're well written. True, it's not cannon, but when they're written to fit the expectations of characters from JKR's world, it feels real and feels like you gain insight into their personalities more.
I can't explain it properly, but I just get such a fangirl happy from a really good story with characters I've loved for over 10 years now.
(I'm luny lady on ff.net if anybody is interested in my terrible ramblings from when I was 17-21)
optimized gfy(html5 video) version of the gif
In an interview JK Rowling stated that James's parents were quite well off and that he was the only son. When they died she said that James would have been able to comfortably live off the inheritance without having to work a day in his life.
So yes I'd say they were very well off. Maybe not Malfoy level but probably still multi-millionaire level.
I'm not sure where the interview is but the wiki mentions this as well (near the bottom of the marriage/order section for the first wizard war): http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/James_Potter_I
Sorry for the formatting. I'm on mobile.

I am not Chinese or of Chinese origin, and I have never lived in China, so I speak with no authority whatsoever on the matter. I just vaguely recall reading a discussion about this relatively recently.
I dug up where I think I originally read it, which is on this metafilter thread. There's some good discussion about the name Cho Chang (essentially the consensus seems to be that it's not a Mandarin-Romanised-with-Pinyin name, but Cho and Chang are both valid Wade-Giles romanisations and therefore Cho Chang is a valid Chinese woman's name, though as I say I am not Chinese nor a student of any Chinese languages).
Along the way I dug up this, which is a video response to the discussion about "To JK Rowling, From Cho Chang". The poet accepts the fact that Cho Chang is in fact a valid Chinese name but the lines about her name are there because she didn't have the space to make the more subtle point that she wanted to make, and talks about how she regrets that that is the main point which has entered general fandom discourse when many of the other points she makes about JKR's problems with race are still valid.
I wish I could give you house points for this, you deserve them. Go join a house (preferable Gryffindor)!
My favorite fanfic story was Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness. It tells a story of the year at Hogwarts without Harry (his seventh year), centering around Neville in particular. It's very well-written and consistent with JKR's canon.
Edit: Link fixed thanks to endlesslycomplicated
Also from the expanded universe of fan fiction is the tales of 7 new books on the adventures of Albus Potter written by Vekin87, all seven books here are complete and on his profile. Harry Potter fanfics are outnumbering every other fanfiction right now. these ones i love, just long enough and similar enough to rowling's work to help with post potter blues

A single 16oz bottle is $17 - $19 on Amazon.
You can get a 4 pack on the Universal Studios website for $28.

If you browse reddit on your desktop, check it out here or over at /r/Enhancement. It makes it easier to preview pictures, and it tracks how many times you upvote/downvote each individual user. Also you can put little tags never to everyone's username if you want to remember something about that particular person. There are other features too, but the tagging is the one I use the most.
Here is what your tag now looks like for me. You've got a light green [+2] next to your name, because I've upvoted you twice. The more times you upvote someone, the brighter the green highlight gets.
I also have myself tagged because I play games at /r/hogwartswerewolves a lot, and it makes it easier to for me to skim and find conversations that involve me or mention me directly.

They're talking about the scene in The Goblet of Fire where Harry transports back to Hogwarts with Cedric's body (after Cedric had just been murdered by Voldemort/Pettigrew in the graveyard).
Here's a real bad quality video or a better quality vid that took forever to load
The fourth movie is probably one of my least favourites, but I was in tears during that scene!
The Killing Curse is a violation of Rule #5 according to the rules of the ~~Ministry of Magic~~ r/harrypotter rules.

Ahem. Speaking as a senior member of the Department of the Department of Mysteries, the Veil is classified. I definitely can't confirm this theory, nor can I expand that it was discontinued as an execution method when it was found that things occasionally walk out of it. No, I can't tell you that.
Anyway, my preferred interpretation is that it actually drops people who go through it into a different reality. Mostly so that this can be my headcanon.
Books, first 2 movies, then some fan fiction. Fuck the movies went majorly downhill after Chamber of Secrets in my opinion. Still pissed at him for what he did (didn't do) at the end of the last movie in contrast to the book. Not sure how spoilers work on this sub.
EDIT: after you've read book 7, read a fan-fic by Melindaleo, it was published to the web before the final book came out, and does a great job of creating an "alternate ending" to the saga, which I personally think I prefer to the actual book, but there are a lot of similarities!
PS I linked the site as such just so you don't see the book title.
Well a flaming whiskey would be whiskey you light on fire. I would probably steer clear of that. But here are some recipes for making alcoholic drinks that are all Harry Pottery.
Gorgeous bag. I don't think I've seen that one before - I'll guess that's something from around 2005-2006, around the GoF movie. The merch started "growing up" right around then - moved from toys and stickers to wearables and high-quality collectibles (like the Nobel collection).
From what I gather on previous threads (and my limited experience with /r/whatsthisworth - also a great sub, if you want to crosspost there), Harry Potter merch just isn't worth much more than what you paid for it. There's so much of it out there, that each piece is cheapened from lack of demand.
The only valuable Harry Potter merch that I know if are the very first printings of the first Harry Potter book - only 500 of them exist, and I believe all of them are now in permanent collections, so you couldn't buy one even if you found one! Even when you get to the following series of printings, you're already down in price considerably, and anything after 1998, America's involved, and stuff starts getting mass-produced...

Actually, no, Rowling said that Ron was wrong there: https://web.archive.org/web/20060316221424/http://www.jkrowling.com/textonly/en/faq_view.cfm?id=40
However, the German translation of OotP says in the scene you're referring to that prefects can't deduct points from other prefects. Is that in any English-language (and thus canon) edition too? I somehow can't imagine the translator making that up out of thin air. Maybe the translator noticed the discrepancy and wrote to Rowling about what the rules really are?
Those faces are rendered beautifully. The style reminds me of this artist, one of my favorite illustrators.

If you seriously wish to have resources provided to you that will educate you about evolution I would strongly recommend that you use google to find some or avail yourself of Khan Academy's biology section. If you're just saying this because you like being contrarian and don't actually want a debate about it, I suggest you delete the comment before you get too swamped.
Same here (I slept through the first clue as well) -- I'm using an extension on chrome that's supposed to notify me when the page changes. Hopefully the chime will be loud enough to make me jump out of bed :)
In case you wanted to give it a try too :) People have been posting these all day and it's rather ingenious!

Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" Trilogy - One of my favorites. There's a lot of depth and analogy in this series. I read it when I was young-ish, came back to it a few years later and it was a whole different experience.
Also Madeleine L'Engle's "A Wrinkle In Time" Series - A bit lighter than Pullman, and more geared toward a younger audience, but Madeleine L'Engle has been at the top of my list for years. She also has a lot of other read-worthy books but these are the easiest way to fall in love with her.
it is awesome! i was a bit sceptical in the beginning, but the more i read, the more i realize what a truly gifted storyteller the writer is. the characters are very nuanced and their actions are carefully in character with both.. uh.. i lost my train of thought there. but i really truly recommend it to anyone who like both harry potter and science.
edit: also, you can get it here in various formats
your link is to Methods of Rationality :P
Upvote though, DA & the Year of Darkness was one of the best I've read!
It is HG/SS, which some people are uncomfortable with, but this fic is my personal favorite. It's dystopian, graphic, but really fills out a "what if the Dark Lord won?" possibility.
I'm a huge fan of "Resolving a Misunderstanding". It's incredibly written MM/AD. Here it is on fanfiction.net, but the author links to a different website where you can read the more, um, "mature" version.
If anyone has time to read a lengthy, three part epic of a fanfic, there's the Unbroken Universe, which asks exactly that - What if they hadn't died?
TVTropes has a fanfic rec page. It's separated into different categories for different kinds of fic.
Hogwarts House Divided is pretty similar in style to the books; it's a continuation fic about Teddy Lupin's first year at Hogwarts.
WARNING: POTENTIAL SPOILERS IN THE LINK
Can someone please take a look at this link I just stumbled across and tell me what it means to them? I'm honestly so confused. How can this be possible? It's from 2013.
Originally saw it here: http://www.themarysue.com/quidditch-necklace/
Apparently my partner bought it on his phone as I was reading that post and freaking out about how cool it was! It's amazing, and I think there was only one but the Etsy shop has since added more: https://www.etsy.com/transaction/103810394
It is so incredible! Probably the coolest Potter thing I own, and that is really saying something. The great thing is it looks like just a beautiful, interesting necklace to those not in the know, but to Potter fans it's the greatest thing in the Universe!
Way, way too many colors. You should pick a color scheme, and go with it (try this site for some ideas).
Tone it down with the fonts, particularly when you're using small letters. For headers, you can use a special font to make things look nice, but when you get down to the main body of text, you're gonna want to use a plainer font.
I'd advise against using a photograph for the background. It would really go better maybe as a header along the top. If you're trying to read text over a photo background, it makes things difficult.
The Hogwarts crest is nice, but it's throwing off the justification/balance of the entire page. I'd chuck it, or place it somewhere else.
Edit: Also, chuck the Buckbeak photo. Photos on top of photos reminds me of sites made in the 90s. :P
You could also try playing the movie with your (assuming you have one) iPhone or iPad, and then take a screenshot of it that way by pressing the top button and the home button at the same time.
If that doesn't work, I've also heard the free version of Skitch will help you out here.
I don't think VLC will work for you, if you purchased it legally through iTunes, because it's protected and meant to be played through iTunes. I could totally be wrong about that, I read that somewhere, and never tried it myself. But VLC is free and super easy to try, so it's still worth giving a shot.
