I bought one specifically to install a clock app on it and stick it to the wall in the bathroom, plugged into the wall socket to stay charged. Cheapest auto-setting WiFi clock on the market!
I settled on using this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tomer.alwayson&hl=en
Bonus: I can also watch Netflix in the bathroom.
I don't know if this pertains but Adobe is abandoning Flash because it is so routinely hacked. I get a weekly gov report on vulnerabilities and Flash showed up more than anything. I removed it several years ago and would not put it on any of my devices.
https://www.fool.com/investing/2017/07/31/why-adobe-is-abandoning-flash.aspx
HTML5 is, as I understand it, the new standard.
I've been using FBReader. It's pretty ugly, but reads damn near everything I throw at it. I too had the same issue with .mobi files, and FBReader works flawless in this regard.
Well they don't "cut deals" if that's what your asking.
Though if your interested Amazon does have some certified refurb Kindle HD8 available for a pretty decent price.
Otherwise the other thing that works is sign-in to your Amazon account via the website and add the items you want (exact items) to a wishlist, this way they will send you targeted emails regarding these items and maybe you will get lucky and they will offer a deal at some point.
Or simply wait until BlackFriday sales when they will have their popular items on sale, etc.
If you read books that you haven't bought with kindle then this is the best book reader on the market FBReader
Much better than the Kindle for Android app. Not sure how to read a kindle bought book on it though. Is it possible?
You just need to sideload it after enabling installation of third-party apps in settings... No need to root.
Here's an old 1.0 version: http://www.4shared.com/android/UEhp8Wxa/comanrdoidchrisarvinbaconreade.html
Try opening the page for Google Play Services in Play Store and manually hitting update.
Open this link on your tablet, and then select to open it with the Play Store app. - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.gms&hl=en_US&gl=US
You can't find Play Services by just searching the Store for some reason, its hidden.
I use the MEKO stylus from Amazon on my Fire HD 8. Works completely fine if you can get use to using a stylus on a smooth glass surface. Used my Fire 8 for each of my college classes using OneNote throughout the entire semester.
The only problem is the Fire 8 has a pretty small screen and I can't really write in a small font so I was dragging along the page after every 5-6 words and I had to learn to write without resting my palm on the screen. A Fire HD 10 would of been better I feel personally for the extra room to write.
Another note is if you're going to use OneNote to write use the app from the Amazon Store because there's input lag when using the Google Play Store app and it makes it super annoying to write.

Just sideload a file manager. Google's Files does it for me.
https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/files-go/files-go-1-0-244270628-release/
I just bought one like 5 mins ago with for $30 with (you need 1 American express point): this deal
Turns out it was looking for the Contacts Sync app, which /u/dbnaruto (found here)[https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-contacts-sync/google-contacts-sync-5-1-1-1965118-release/google-contacts-sync-5-1-1-1965118-android-apk-download/] . Did the trick for Contacts!
Though GMail is still proving stubborn...
The HDX is tricky. If you want to mod out a tablet, the HDX is not the best choice. They encrypted the bootloader good this time. Hashcode did good with safestrap and ROM slots but it's definitely not a get your feet wet tablet as far as modding goes. My opinion is to stick with rooting at most with this tablet. I use 1mobile for Google Play apps http://www.1mobile.com.
You have to be able to root an Amazon tablet to get play services on it now. The HDX is tricky and not a get your feet wet trying to mod tablet. This video may help but I would just use TubeMate http://tubemate.net/. It's really a great YouTube app.
You could go with the HD 8, buy a kid-friendly case for it (available in several colors), and install the Google Play store without rooting the device - giving you access to YouTube Kids.
However, since YouTube Kids would be sideloaded through Google Play, I'm not sure if you could have it show up on the kid-friendly profile.
The HD 8 does let you create a kid-friendly profile, and access settings for it under your parent profile.
The Fire Kids Edition tablet is actually just the $49.99 7" tablet with a protective case, ad-free lockscreen, 2-year accidental protection, and 1-year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited.
Any standard micro USB cable should work, I personally like Anker's poweline+ cables. (I would link them but I'm on mobile)
Edit: Here's an amazon link
No worries, I ended up pulling the trigger. I had $62 of Amazon gift card money sitting there from Swagbucks, etc.
Also, I found this bluetooth keyboard case which should definitely work:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B071HWYDM1/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I'll just need to sideload the Google apps and I think I'll be good to go. Thanks for your input by the way!
I might be figuring this out.
I'm in the music app downloading the album to my internal storage
Edit: I may have spoken too soon. I have the album downloaded to my internal storage, but I don't see a way to add it to my child's profile in the Freetime app. It allows me to share content, but music isn't one of them. It has the option to share Books, Audible, Videos, and Games & Apps, but no option for music.... :(
EDIT 2: This is getting frustrating. I don't think this is possible. Even though they advertise music as one of the things you can do in Freetime Unlimited (In the section titled 'How FreeTime Unlimited Works'), I can't seem to find a way to add music to my child's profile... Again this is music I purchased from amazon.
AccuBattery on my un-rooted Android phone plays an alarm when charge level reaches 80%. Unfortunately when I installed it on my Fire HD8, it said Fire OS doesn't allow it to access Android battery metrics, so it was powerless to do anything related to the battery.
I use Xodo PDF reader https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xodo.pdf.reader&hl=en_US. You'll have to install Google Play if Amazon doesn't have it in their apps section. If you want to know how to put Google play on your Kindle, just Google "Kindle 10 HD Google play". It's very easy to do.
Hey /u/BarmGek . My recommendation would to be to view the PDFs using the Google PDF Viewer .
If you don't have the Google Play store installed yet, you can do so without rooting your device by following these instructions .
That should do the trick!
I just received mine a couple days ago. While, straight out of the box, it does seem like a high-end children's toy that tries to hold your hand too tightly, there's a lot of potential.
I immediately side-loaded the google play store, and then installed most apps that I use on the daily... Plex, Google docs and sheets, etc. I was also able to use JuiceSSH to connect with my network-attached raspberry pi media server with full admin privileges. I also installed Total Commander and was able to mount my network hard drive via the SFTP plugin. Now I can download all my movies wirelessly, then play them on the go using VLC (Also in the Play store).
What I'm saying is Fire Vanilla is anemic, but if you spend the time, you'll find you can build yourself a really functional tablet for far cheaper than anything else out there. Keep trying, it's worth it
Thanks!
I'll keep an eye on the HD 10. Unfortunately, this is the only listing on amazon.ca
Just an idea in case the version you have is incompatible with your device.
With luck it should work with a VPN.
Not sure how mobi-based files will work with it, but try PerfectViewer. It's my go-to choice for cbz-based comic reading after spending a while sorting through different apps.
It simply means to load files via USB or other means and not from a marketplace. You have to enable it in the device settings. On another note I made something i call the "wikifaq" which, while being out-of-date and nobody seems to read it, does actually explain this.
Technically this will void the warranty, as soon as you root it's gone. Now that being said, it's REALLY hard to brick the Fire completely from what I can tell. So long as it turns on, you can get it back to stock. I haven't had to do so yet, but on the XDA forums there's plenty of methods. Once it's back at stock you can send it back for warranty with them none the wiser.
As for readers, there's the Kindle App which will let you read things from the Kindle Store and I've heard great things about FBReader for all other ebooks (haven't had a chance to try it yet though). Just remember you will lose the lending library.
You'll have to download it from apkmirror or other apk file hosting sites. Like here:
Since you can't download it from Amazon App Store, and the Kindle blocks Google Play Store, you are forced to download it from somewhere else. You'll have to check back with site every so often for updates, if they are released, and download the update manually.
There is an app that automatically checks on these apps for you, but I don't have my kindle with me to verify the app name.
First go to: settings -> Security and Privacy -> and allow apps from unknown sources.

then go to the website apkpure.com this allows other android apps, and search the browser you choose, everything should install correctly but to download the app you have to use silk, just to get the other web browser.
My friend uses his fire 8 to read comics and from he says it is easy to setup and epubs are no problem . https://en.uptodown.com/android I've used this site before I installed google playstore for my fire 10.
why not use perfect viewer? my understanding is that it is free although you can donate if you wish. Actually from the dev's page:
> License
>Perfect Viewer is free software.
>You can use Perfect Viewer on any Android-powered devices, including a device in a commercial organization. You don't need to register or pay for Perfect Viewer.
Here is the dev's page where you can download it for yourself if you want to give it a try.
I tried loading cbr and cbz files and the fire doesn't notice them. So then i tried making a mobi file of a comic once but the images came out distorted. My suggestion is to just use a comic reader.
https://tachiyomi.org/help/guides/reading-local-manga/#folder-structure
I make sure to have ‘crop border’ on, and ‘scale type’ to Fit Screen under ‘Reader’ in Settings. I also have the rotation to “force portrait”
You can also choose to download from online sources, or just view. It’s extremely convenient.
Actually, you still have your Prime Movies and Amazon Apps. Download the appstore here and as for your Prime videos, just put a shortcut on your screen to here and so long as you are logged into your Amazon Prime account you can just watch the videos in your browser. The only thing you actually 100% lose is access to the Lending Library.
PS4 Remote Play app can work, but you need a rooted device to install it: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/module-ps-remote-play-enabler-t3575876
To control it with Dualshock 4, you can either use Sixaxis app and emulate touchscreen presses (acceptable but not the best solution) or you can connect DS4 directly to PS4 and use the tablet as a screen (much better). Obviously, for the second solution to work you need to be close to your PS4.
To prevent screen lag, connect PS4 to your router by cable (or alternately by 5GHz wifi) and Fire to 5 GHz wifi.
Sounds like the usb port is physically broken. Is it still under warranty? If not and you get some other opinions on the matter that don't help, you may want to consider opening it and replacing the connector. The guide on ifixit shows how to open it and the connector on the motherboard looks like it is mass-produced, so you might find one for sale.
Try this solution:
>So – for anyone else with this problem – apparently what you can do is save the file somewhere else, then copy it and paste it back into the usb_driver folder. It’s a problem that is not related to Admin access (I have that), it’s something Windows 7 is doing to try to prevent overwriting of system files.
Taken from here. If not look at this thread and search for "access denied" in the comments for some other suggestions.
From one of their help pages: " You can import up to 250 songs to your music library for free. With an Amazon Music subscription, you can import up to 250,000 songs. To learn more, go to Change Your Amazon Music Subscriptions. Amazon Digital Music purchases do not count towards library limits. "
I don't think it'll let you upload more unless you set it up first for a subscription, but that's just a guess since their Cloud Drive service will stop you from uploading too much.
You can check by going here: https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/manage Click "Listen to your music" -> Your Library (left side menu) -> imported (the submenu beneath that) -> Should show how many are currently there from your 250. Amazon keeps music separate from its cloud drive storage (5GB for free), so you shouldn't have to worry about the size itself, just the number of songs.
I think anything you get from Amazon doesn't count. I have 'autorip' music where Amazon will automatically 'rip' any CD you buy off Amazon and include it in the music library. That seems to not be counting toward my quota.
If you do tend to get music from someplace other than Amazon and need the 250k option, it looks like it's 25 USD per year to upgrade.
Always great to hear stories of not-as-tech-inclined folks figuring stuff out like this :)
You're at the mercy of the apps, unfortunately. If there's an option to save to the SD card then fair enough but if not then there's no real way to force it. Apps themselves have to be installed on device/internal memory (the 'Move to SD Card' option hasn't been a feature of Android for some time). Since Android 6 there has been an option to format the SD card as 'Adoptable Storage'; effectively extra internal memory, but it's still up to the device as to what gets stored there.
If you're feeling adventurous, it may be possible to root your tablet. You can then partition your SD card and use Link2SD to move app files and some associated data to the SD card partition.
I'm seeing this as well on my Fire HD 8 (2020), and it's very concerning.
I've also uninstalled Google Play Services and reinstalled the latest version of Google Play Services from APKStore (you cannot do an in-place upgrade, there's only a "deactivate" button which doesn't work). The error goes away temporarily, but eventually returns a week or so later.
And we're not alone -- hundreds of complaints on this issue in the Reviews section of Google Play Services on the Google Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.gms&hl=en_US&gl=US
Is this just a temporarily bug. Or is it an indication that the little "secret" of sideloading Google Play Store is over, at least if you want to use your Fire to play games requiring Google Play? Wonder if Google and Amazon are finally saying "no more?"
I use one if these. Works great. I used it on an iPad and now my Fire for drawing and sketching and painting. Art Rage is a favorite app.
I bought this case from fintie. You can move it to any orientation. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B091F3RWC5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Tested on a Fire 7 7th gen and it seems to perform better. For the record, I also have Google Play Store installed and used Simple Keyboard (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rkr.simplekeyboard.inputmethod&hl=es&gl=US), which is a tiny download and it does look good with rest of apps if you apply a dark theme to it.
You don't need Google Play Store to install Netflix. Netflix is available on the Amazon App store. I'm looking at it right now. Here is the link. You can even have it "delivered to" you fire from the website. https://www.amazon.com/Netflix-Inc/dp/B005ZXWMUS/
CBR/CBZ files are just rar/zip archives with the extension changed. They can be found numerous places online. Not sure on the etiquette in this sub about talking about how to acquire them, so i'm not going to say more on that topic at the moment.
There are a number of apps for PC/mobile that will read them. I use Perfect Viewer on my Fire HD8.
I started using it on my old Android tablet and fell in love with it. You can get it from the Amazon AppStore for $2.99, but i think you can download it for free from the developers site if you want to try it out without investing in it. It's worth the $3 in my opinion. I bought it just to support the software and that's something i rarely do.
I've got the Google Play store loaded on my Fire HD8. If you google around, you can find out how to load it. It's pretty simple, i think you can even do it without a computer. Once i had that, I was able to install Chrome. I'm not a fan of Silk, but it works for basic web browsing. I've had no issues with Chrome on the HD8 at all.
I bought the HD8 to replace an aging Nexus 7 and I've not been disappointed. It's a hell of a tablet for the price. I wish the screen was a little brighter at times, but that's about the only complaint i've got about this thing...
We have a total of about 6 Fire tablets, and buying one of these is nearly a required accessory. I agree with you about the slipperiness.
Slap a screen protector and a normal case on it, and get yourself one of these babies.

Or if you must get a waterproof case, these look like a possibility.
I use an old LG Optimus somethingorother as my pocket ereader. Several years ago, Amazon offered this little bitty thing for something like $15, and I jumped on that sale. It has been a complete joy. I disabled everything except the kindle app, and the google books app, and it is the best little ereader! If I keep wifi turned off, the battery will easily last two days of vacation reading - meaning - several hours on the plane or bus or car or whatever. Like you, I don't want to drain my phone. Best $15 I've ever spent!
edited to add - just out of curiosity, I looked it up. Optimus Exceed 2. My order indicates that I spent $14.99, yet Amazon will sell you one, today, for $90. What a riot!
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K2XX4OY/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Assuming you're referring to the Fire 7 2019, which is currently the only 9th gen Fire tablet out, there's this. You can look up Fire 7 antiglare
on Amazon to find more.
For travel, where I don't want anything super-heavy, I use a "Fintie Slim Case", the cover is stiff without adding too much to the heft of the tablet.
Has held up okay for 5 years of world travel.
i have a pair of https://smile.amazon.com/Wireless-Bluetooth-Charging-Resistance-Connection/dp/B0866C659Q/ref=sr_1_3?crid=15STQMPOYVLC1&dchild=1&keywords=jlab+earbuds&qid=1597681688&sprefix=jl%2Caps%2C206&sr=8-3 and they are really decent for the price . last long as hell and charge pretty fast, it was weird getting used to changing tracks but once ya get it down they are good to go
The original Fire used a pretty custom port. They also didn't solder in the legs of the shield so they did tend to break loose easily. If the port is just flaky and isn't actually damaged it may be possible to resolder it instead of replace it. I do agree with the other posters, though, that for the cost of a replacement part and your time to do it a new base Fire 7 is pretty cheap unless this is an effort to recover old data.
https://www.amazon.com/ePartSolution_2X-Charging-Connector-Amazon-Replacement/dp/B07D2L49VK
oh nice :)
Here's a tool that might prove handy for your Fire - can be used to turn it into an almost normal Google Androd tablet. Roots it, (optionally) purges the amazon stuff and installs all the Google eco-system.
I then like to slap Lawn Chair launcher on it for that Android 9.0 feel
Is this so that you can use a service like OverPlay to stream content outside of the country?
I cheated a bit and set up two wifi routers - one with the SmartDNS DNS servers set up and one without it. If I'm just surfing normally, I'm connected to the one without. If I'm streaming movies, I'm connected to the SmartDNS one.
I follwed these instructions to install the 4 parts of the Play store.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/how-to-install-google-play-store-fire-t3486603
Baldurs Gate 2 Enhanced is in the Play store (9.99) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beamdog.baldursgateenhancededition
So, I got this working on my rooted phone but had to "su" first to be in root access mode, then it read the table and gave me the decimal version of the "GSF ID" I had gotten from the play store app.
So, they are definitely looking for the decimal version of the GSF ID, which you can get by using "Device ID" by Evozi then converting that 16-character hex string to decimal.
This gets me the same number as doing this on my rooted phone in Terminal:
su sqlite3 /data/data/com.google.android.gsf/databases/gservices.db "select * from main where name = \"android_id\";"
But, registering that number from my Fire HD8 didn't change the Play Store settings from "Uncertified" to "Certified", so no way to tell if it is perfectly working yet. But probably correct, will just need a new build of FireOS to be pushed out to find out.
You can also get it by using "Device ID" by Evozi then converting that 16-character hex string to decimal.

Tried that, using device ID reported by the Device ID (Android ID) app and it said:
> Uh oh. Something went wrong. Please try again.
Repeatedly. :-(
Yes, you can install a dropbox app and download files with that. I use DropSync since then you can just autosync a folder instead of having to pick individual files to download in the official DropBox app. The same developer also has Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive sync apps. I've never looked for an iCloud sync app but that might exist too.
If you have the play store installed, this is an invaluable tool for finding out what's taking up space on android devices.
Why go to the trouble of converting them to .mobi? Just use .cbr and .cbz format (they are simply numbered jpegs in a rar or zip archive and renamed) and use a regular comic viewer like Perfect Viewer.
If you haven't followed the thread, in the app when you run should be a button, Already Paid? Follow instructions.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android&hl=en
Note: If you’ve already purchased the app or have a Plex Pass, you do NOT need to purchase again! We attempt to detect your previous purchase automatically. If this fails, please select "Already Paid?" on the activation screen and follow the instructions to restore your purchase.
As /u/thefunkygibbon also points out, he also runs on multiple devices. In fact I just put plex on my 3rd Fire this past thanksgiving So about a week ago, and didn't have to pay again.
I'm also adding the email I got last time before previous fire, when it wouldn't activate properly: Plex Android Activation (Plex, Inc.) Feb 1, 9:36 AM
Thank you for contacting us. We’ve been able to verify your Android app purchase and have validated your account for you. Your app will pick up the validation the next time you try to play media. Note that you will need an active internet connection for the first validation.
Enjoy your Plexing!
And finally from the plex app on play store:

I LOVE Smart AudioBook Player for playing non-Audible titles. Easy to setup and tons of nice features. Of course it's no available on the Amazon App Store (boo). Akimbo seems to have decent reviews. While I understand why they do it, it's annoying how anti-consumer Amazon is by locking you into the Amazon App Store (which is missing like 90% of the great apps).
https://www.amazon.com/MiiLink-Bluetooth-Transmitter-Receiver-Adapter/dp/B08G8Q7NXZ/
Uses the audio jack so there's no doubt in compatibility, designed for airplane use, one charge should last 10 hours according to description.
I ordered Mixoo and it arrives today. I will update later after I test it out, but it looks exactly like the Aibow. Another great thing about Inkcredible that I forgot to mention, it has automatic palm rejection so you don't have to worry about resting your hand on the Fire while drawing; some apps drove me nuts by not drawing while my hand was touching the Fire so that I could not write a thing.
Ones like the one attached with circle at the end seem to work well on Samsung A tablets and Fire Tables. https://www.amazon.com/MEKO-Universal-Precision-Capacitive-Replacement/dp/B00N1BRWLA/ref=sxin_15_pa_sp_search_thematic_sspa?content-id=amzn1.sym.dfb69b7f-0c77-4124-a5d0-05887808d5d6%3Aamzn1.sym.dfb69b7f-0c77-4124-a5d0-05887808d5d6&crid=35OHPG6NDA4V8&cv_ct_cx=generic%2Bstylus%2Bpen%2Bwith%2Bcircle&keywords=generic%2Bstylus%2Bpen%2Bwith%2Bcircle&pd_rd_i=B00N1BRWLA&pd_rd_r=957e17cb-54f0-47f6-b446-e4c2b37b6b93&pd_rd_w=FcMry&pd_rd_wg=2wuq1&pf_rd_p=dfb69b7f-0c77-4124-a5d0-05887808d5d6&pf_rd_r=17N82DBK58JGY5NDQZB4&qid=1670262163&sprefix=generic%2Bstylus%2Bpen%2Bwith%2Bcircle%2Caps%2C79&sr=1-20-bb4842f6-7db0-410d-8e58-ed475f3f7b54-spons&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyU1VKTTYzNDFTTUpNJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMDgwNzQwMUJLUzBHRlM1RzJTRCZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNjg4ODg1RUlWNVlRMkZZOVBFJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3Bfc2VhcmNoX3RoZW1hdGljJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ&th=1

The app Musicolet will play .mp3s and has a sleep timer. It's a somewhat lightweight, easy to use audio player. I get mine from apkmirror.com instead of going through the whole process of instaling google play store. Musicolet on Apkmirror.
These older versions should still work.

I got this one. Cheap, does the job. Not as nice as the origami cases but it protects the tablet and stands it up when I need it to, and that's all I need.
Hey I got the Fire Tablet 10 2021 this January, and I got this one
Really Really good, amazing grip and feel, the cut outs are perfect and the screen protector is a must, I got the gel one, responds super good.
If you plan on reading or watching movies, I got this stand too.
I use it to read comics, super comfortable, after awhile holding the tablet it gets heavy, so I drink my coffe and read.
Hope this helps.
There's an app, Caffeine, which adds a tile to the settings and allows you to keep the screen on for a set period of time. I'm not sure if it will work with Fire OS. If you don't have Google you can get the apk from APK Mirror or similar and sideload it.
I only paid $45 for the 10 Plus on prime day after trading in my old 7th gen Fire 10. Its not like the Ipad's or the premium Samsung, but it's still a decent tablet.
If you're looking for a tablet with a stock android experience, the Nokia T20 has similar mid-range specs to the Fire 10 Plus, and it's the same price right now:
The Lenovo P11 Plus with 6 gigs of ram is also a very good option.
It is there, it's just not compatible with anything. On device, the App Store will only show apps that are compatible with the device you are on, so it won't show up searching there. The app hasn't been updated since 2019, so I suspect it was marked incompatible due to Google and Amazon having legal spats about service offerings across platforms. It's come and gone on Fire TV devices over the years.

Have you considered getting a usb-c hub?
They are a bit expensive but very useful and versatile. I like to use mine to connect a mouse, keyboard, and flash drives all while still charging!
No, they did not compare the Fire to the Mini in terms of compute performance. The Fires are cheap and low-end budget tablets. They do not attempt to compete against iPads on performance at all. The best and most expensive Fire HD 10 is still about one quarter of the performance of the lowest end, most cheap, base iPad 9th gen. Amazon has not tried to position a Fire tablet directly against an iPad since the 2014 Fire HDX. In fact, it took another 6 years for Amazon to release another tablet of that power and still hasn't released one with a screen of that quality.
What Amazon actually did was compare only tumble durability. Nothing else.
> As measured in tumble tests, Fire HD 8 is twice as durable as Apple iPad mini (2021).
USB-C is just a physical standard for the port and cable. It doesn't imply any extra or extended capabilities of the port on a device. All a USB-C port has to be capable of is USB 2.0 and 3A@5v of power. Those are also the only capabilities Amazon lists on the Fire HD 8 product page:
> USB-C (2.0) connector for charging;
The hub may not be supported at all, and even if it does work as a hub the HDMI output likely won't work.
The app is still available: https://www.amazon.com/Twitch-Interactive-Inc/dp/B007SOQBCM
It's just not compatible with all Amazon Fire tablets. What is the actual model/generation that you have? If it's actually branded Kindle then it's likely far too old to be supported. There haven't been Fires sold with Kindle branding since 2014. There are threads where it's been pointed out that the app isn't compatible with the most recent Fires, either. Which is really weird, but it is what it is.
I run a similar setup with an 8 that's been debloated and set to keep the screen on constant. Sits on my wall showing my weather station info.
The app I use and like is WhatWeather: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kolov.weatherstation
Works well for my uses. Obviously you'll want to check to see what weather stations sources it supports. Mine is an Ecowitt system. It will aggregate info from public weather APIs as well as your own local data.
> I didn't spend a lot of money on this device
This is the main selling point for fire tablets. They are not made to be all-rounders or to compete with more expensive fully featured tablets. They are made to be cheap media consumption devices.
Not supporting epub on-device is an Amazon limitation across their whole ecosystem. They allow you to send epub and PDF to the Amazon Personal Documents Service, through which they will also track reading progress across devices. They have no way to track progress for documents that you have sideloaded directly onto a device.
My first thought for apps is that because you bought refurbished, and it was a few years ago, and thus the tablet you have runs FireOS 5. That's equivalent to Android 5. I'm almost certain that if you look at the requirements for the apps that don't show for you that they will list Android 6 or higher as minimum requirements. Being limited with that is just life with an older device, nothing specific to Fire.
Udemy - Requires Android 6.0 and up
Domestika - Requires Android 8.0 and up
Grrrr. Yeah, that's annoying.
There's something called F-Stop Gallery which seems to have some sort of cloud features (they say Dropbox), but then you get into trying to get everything to work using duct tape and baling wire.
The same case here in Canada is at least $50 + 15% tax. I got the tablets for $70 + tax. For the replacement digitizer, I got one from AliExpress for $12. I already own a heat gun and I've taken apart and fixed phones before too. So it makes more sense for me to deal with a broken digitizer. For the most part, the TurtleSkin case is pretty good. My youngest daughter drops her constantly and it hasn't broken yet: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B089Q63S7K/
Sadly it seems unavailable here's one for 9.99
How is it unavailable in Canada🙀
there selling it via a different seller for 92$ at that price your better off buying from the US
Can confirm. This model is great. There's also a similar model with a slot that can prop up the tablet, but not if it is in too thick of a case: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Bluetooth-Multi-Device-Keyboard-K480/dp/B00MUTWLW4/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1GG9CYIGHX60C&keywords=logitech+k480&qid=1656560343&sprefix=logitech+k480%2Caps%2C124&sr=8-2
Logitech makes some nice keyboards, imo. I have this one and it's nice that i can switch it between 3 devices. The MX Keys series looks nice too.
Something like this then. It's basically a clone of the Apple keyboard. :D
https://www.amazon.com/Arteck-Ultra-Slim-Bluetooth-Compatible-Including/dp/B07PFCRWG9/
Logitech's K380 is basically the same thing, but cost 50% more.

I got his case https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Keyboard-detachable-Generation-release/dp/B08SB72Q8F/ it basically makes the kindle like a small laptop. no kickstands etc and pretty rugged plastic. It is a little pricey but goes on sale time to time. I also noticed some reviews mentioning a few specific keys that they had die, but so far it works well for me and overall its well rated.
Hey! On January i got a Fire HD 10 2021 11th gen, and i was also looking for a case, so there is so much in the market BUT not all look good and protects good, so I got this one
Is just black silicone with some good cut outs and good grip, highly recommended this one for sure, all the other looks really awful, but everyone has his own personal taste.
I hope you get this one, you won't regret it.
Wrong on the "don't, and will never" comment. They used to support exFAT, prior to the 2017 generation. You can find plenty of proof of this on both XDA and Amazon's community forums. Heck, I had a lowly 8GB Fire 7 2015 that read exFAT just fine. Amazon intentionally yanked software support, as the microSD slot hardware is totally exFAT-compatible.
That said, it's easy enough to load Paragon's exFAT/NTFS for USB app to work around this obvious software block: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paragon.tcplugins_ntfs_ro&hl=en&referrer=utm_source%3Dweb-site
But you are probably right about Amazon wanting consumer lock-in to their platform.
Right now - and maybe not for long - you can get the HD10 for $100 (savings of $50) so there's not much risk involved. This was last refreshed in 2021, so the next update is probably coming in 2023.
If percussive maintenance doesn't work, then your gonna have to return it. It should have a 1 year warranty (10" get a year, 7" and 8" only 90 days) else their fire tablets are on sale now and if you return a tablet you get 20% off. Fire 10"
There are products on Amazon that let you connect a tablet or phone to any monitor to mirror the screen. You just need to enable USB debugging and download an app.
I used one before and it worked well enough.
Here is an example of one.
