Thank you for everything! With Magisk, my Pixel 2 isn't handicapped!
The one thing I miss that doesn't work is StickMount. Maybe Chainfire will be willing to get it working on 8.1
I still use flash-all.bat with the -w flag removed when I upgrade (using the factory image) because I use TWRP Recovery. OTAs are still too scary.
you need a OTG cable and stickmount app
Then you can play with rocket player, poweramp or whatever your flavor of music app u like.
If you root your device, you could try Chainfire's StickMount app.
Also, note that some phones do now have necessary voltage traces connected to the microusb port (this was the case with the Nexus 4), in which case you might need to use a powered Y-cable or a powered USB hub.
Coming from the Canadian version (T999V) and running AOSP/CM. Picture messaging (SMS) never worked with CM so it's nice to have that again. The only thing I miss is the expandable memory. I have a low data limit on my cell plan so streaming on a regular basis isn't really an option for me. To compensate I purchased a 32GB Dual flash drive (USB-A/USB-C) and installed Stickmount from Chainfire so the contents of the drive show up with a media scan and I can use it with the Google Play Music app. Other than that, it's smooth like butter and feels great. The overall size took a little getting used to but it's got a great screen, great camera and the external sound is good enough for me.
Personally, I want Adblock, stickmount, remove crapware, custom ROMs, and other less significant things. IMO this shouldn't even be an issue and I will be avoiding companies and phones with locked bootloaders in the future.
I used a very similar setup during my last trip:
USB OTG card reader/hub similar to this plus a smartphone, a 128GB USB drive for $30 and a lot of SD cards.
I needed to install an app to mount the two storage devices (SD card and USB drive) since the stock android would only mount one of the devices, and a file manager to copy the files from one device to the other. If I needed this setup again I would probably try a different app since the one above sometimes acted up and made the process a bit more jarring than necessary.
With this setup I always had two copies of my photos, one on the USB drive and one spread out over the SD cards.
Just make sure the Android device is properly charged before copying since the charging is done via the USB port where the USB hub is connected and you have to power not only the Android device with the battery but the USB devices as well. Even if you have an external power source at the hub it will only supply the USB devices with power, not the Android device itself.
If you're rooted and use StickMount it should work without a hitch.
There was an app that I used a long time ago that did exactly that...StickMount! Completely forgot about this guy. Haven't used it in a long time, and when I did it had some small but persistent bugs. At the very least, I hope it gets you on the right track.
Side note: I guess this is a good excuse to finally getting around to looking up symlinks for Android :P
Might have to refer to Stickmount's XDA Forum page for NTFS support.
I was concerned about storage as well. I picked up a 32GB dual (USB-A & USB-C) stick and installed Chainfire's Stickmount so I can store my music on the stick and still use the Play Music app. Works great
~~You can get an OTG (on-the-go) cable and bring the media on an external hard drive or flash drive.~~
Edit: I don't think this is possible on iAnything.
OTG cable description. I've done this for Android on lollipop with root and app StickMount. Googling has results for "iOS OTG cable" but I know nothing of the difficulty or requirements of using it on iOS. Good luck!
No, you don't generally load drivers (kernel modules), unless you're running a custom kernel which supports loading kernel modules. If you're rooted, you can try using the StickMount app and a regular USB stick and see if it works or not.
Also, the s3c driver, I believe, is only for Samsung phones - so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Finally, with regards to custom ROMs, you're on your own sorry. It's pretty hard to get community support for no-brand/Chinese devices. This is why I always recommend buying an older but mainstream flagship phone instead of a cheap and shiny new one. Heck, there are Marshmallow ROMs even for the original Nexus One and Galaxy S, which were released 6 years ago..
as others have said, an OTG works for mice and keyboards with no problems. however, I have a feeling you were talking about USB drives.
if I remember correctly, on stock I needed an app to make flash drives work. Stickmount is what I used before flashing CyanogenMod. if you're not rooted, from the research I've done very quickly just now for non-root users, Nexus Media Importer is a read-only no root solution. with that said, having a Nexus without root is kind of pointless, so I would suggest rooting if you aren't rooted already.
if you're not rooted and don't want to be rooted for whatever reason, I would probably suggest using something like Dropbox or Google Drive to bring files between devices instead.
I recommend SanDisk's models. I got one last year, and it rocks.

They're available on Amazon. I'd link, but I'd probably be flagged as spam then.
Bear in mind that not all Android phones will read this out of the box. I'm rooted and use StickMount on my Nexus 5. Works great. I can also access it in TWRP, which makes creating backups much easier since I don't need to free up 7GB of internal space.
I really like StickMount since I got one of those USB thumb drives with a built in mini-USB OTG connection.
linkme: stickmount
Don't use rice. Rice does not actually solve water damage issues. It's a bad rumor.
Never try to turn on a wet device. It can cause damage. Instead, do the following:
Take your phone apart.
Then use isopropyl alcohol, the more pure the better (90%+), to clean and dry individual components. Read this whole page, compressed air may work better for some parts.
Wait.
Reassemble.
You can also google for more information on the subject now that you know what to use. Best of luck!
Edit: Possible nightly backup solution in the future. Does not require access to internet. Bring a USB drive or another drive to backup your files onto. Requires an on-the-go (OTG) cable as well as the USB drive. May require StickMount (requires root). Another reason we should be able to root our damn phones.
May be a good idea to xpost this thread to /r/techsupport.
Have you tried with Chainfire's free StickMount app?
Not 100% sure but I remember that if you have root access you can install StickMount and have usb-otg support system wide and use it with almost any file explorer.
If not I think Amaze File Explorer have support.
The only one I am 100% sure is Solid Explorer but you gonna have to pay.
If am not mistaken all NEW tablets should work fine with a regular USB stick like Leef Bridge 3.0 Mobile USB or SanDisk Ultra Dual USB Drive, But if you wanted to mount hard drive or something similar you should look into rooting your device and installing StickMount. For tablet recommendations I guess Google Nexus 9 or the NVIDIA SHIELD tablet would be good choices since they have a front facing speakers so I guess that should help.
did not test many roms, but CM13 has OTG nativly. For Stock Rom i use stickmount (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount)
Depends on your phone. You most likely need an app to mount the external usb/sd card. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount&hl=en
Have you tried using StickMount?

I'm going to attempt it tonight.
Also, are you using the modified initrd.img?

Another method is to use a boot option

Get stickmount app!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount
It's not Kodi but android. If your android is rooted, you can try to use stickmount (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount).
I use Stickmount ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount ) It creates a new usbStorage dir/link in media/sdcard/external to the new OTG area using the usb volume name.
If you have rooted the phone you could give chainfire's Stickmount a try.
