I got the idea after finding this LED bulb on Amazon. The whole thing is made from PVC plumbing fittings, cable ties, and a lawn sprinkler.
Edit:
I started with a simple lamp fitting and built around it. The handle is a plastic garden sprinkler head (the underground type) with the inside taken out and put together to make the handle.
The middle is a two PVC plumbing fittings one above the other to widen out the middle to accomodate the base of the bulb.
The cage/basket is basically made of cable ties glued into the shape with a mesh screen to diffuse the light and make it look more realistic.
The whole thing was sprayed black.
How accurate do you need to be?
It's hard for players to read percentile dice from across the table.
Instead, I would use tokens. Put out ten tokens in front of you-- glass beads, pennies, whatever-- and remove one every time the boss is down about 10%. Add them back if the boss heals.
I use lots of colored glass gems as tokens-- sometimes they're sold as floral beads or vase filler. The red ones look kind of like the health dots from some older games.
Dang, alright. I wrote up some steps about how I'd make this based on your feedback.
Alright, so to make a tabletop screen here are the steps.
I recently started hoting games on AirBnB Experiences (check out this link if you haven't heard of this before: https://www.airbnb.com/experiences/188703) to leverage this awesome gameroom build we did a while ago.
Curious to know what you think about this project -- since while poking around DIY subs again, I just discovered this cool sub and thought you might enjoy! :)
No worries, if you want to have a go yourself you could use my masters as a base: https://www.tinkercad.com/things/gHfh72FtueQ-flatmen-masters
If you can generate svg path files (I use inkscape) you can import those in Tinkercad to create characters!
Not sure if this qualifies, but if not -- I'm sure it'll be downvoted to oblivion anyways so what the hell... :) To go along with my similar recent post about my game room build for the AirBnB Experiences (https://www.airbnb.com/experiences/188703) thing, I also produced this short-film/promo video too. I hope it captures the essence and depth of experience I first felt when playing D&D for the first time. Does it hit the mark?
Looks about like the D&D official notebooks bestiary series that came out a little while ago.
Bestiary Notebook Set (Dungeons & Dragons): 8 Mini Notebooks https://www.amazon.ca/dp/1984824651/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_JKQAF74WBGCA8FV1A7C7
Theres 2 lined, 2 dotted, 2 gridded and 2 blank that come in the set.
A tip from my experience:
Go to the dollar store, or to Amazon, and buy some cabinet liner like this. Cut it slightly smaller than the borders of each tile, and use PVA to glue it to the bottom of the tiles.
It keeps them from sliding around on smooth surfaces like tables or gaming mats, which is increasingly important when you or others are pushing minis around on them.
I found an okay priced prop heart on amazon; https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07545Q6HD/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
You can get foam clay on Amazon, I think it's called foam-mo? It's utilized by the cosplay community all the time. Works like clay until it dries and then can be carved/sanded/etc like foam once it dries.
I would recommend the monoprice mini. It has a comparably small print bed (12cm×12cm×12cm) but it's resolution is fairly decent. I have had mine for a few years now and it's still chugging. Also it's only $180 or so on Amazon right now. https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Assembled-Filament-Preloaded-Printable/dp/B07515FG7P
I found it on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001767QPS/
Like I said though, I wouldn't use this one again. Ideally the lid/box would have a lip so they fit together a snugger. I'm going to keep an eye out at some thrift stores and see if I can find a cheap one for next time.
Wow, that looks amazing. Could we see a pic with a d20 for scale? I made a similar dice tower and tray case, but wood beats plastic every time. https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/dice-tower-and-dice-box I'd love to get a CNC and start designing wood creations one day. Great job. What's next, a dice prison?
Hi Wakelord. I love your generic tokens, they look very useful. You can use cults3d.com and/or pinshape.com to sell your STL files. Quicker than setting up an etsy for 3D files. Here are my designs, some of which are D&D related... https://cults3d.com/en/users/Jinja/creations
They pay out at the end of the month if your sales reach their minimum threshold.
Good luck!
Expo makes them too. They're not chalk. They look a lot like dry erase bit you need something most to remove it
Cool! I’m a physical therapist, so these types of “cosplay” inventions are pretty interesting to me. Out of curiosity, did you try something like this or this? It might be a little more stable. Just a thought. I’ve done a little woodworking, and one of those is through a pretty well known woodworking website. Enjoy your new prosthesis!
They come from packs of Russian toy minis, about 2" scale. "tehnolog 54mm" will get you the line of them as a search term, there's a bunch of great fantasy dudes. The exact ones I used are here:
Hope this helps! 😁
I personally use these epoxy circles over the image, it gives a slight magnified effect to the picture underneath.

So for a laser-type printer, I'd want something like this?
https://www.amazon.com/Mod-Podge-Waterbase-16-Ounce-CS11202/dp/B00178QQJ8/
I'll pick that up right now, if it's the right one!
This is amazing!!! I'm about to start working on an airship but I'm going to 3d print the ship part. I plan on using one of these for the top part ala Aquisitions Incorporated. I wish I had the discipline to do it by hand. You are doing a fantastic job!
Found something like this, that's what I mean, but I find a lot of those tips useless for my skill level so maybe something less fancy will be better for you
For tiny sized mini bases, I use government-issued copper plated zinc discs covered in milliput carved into stone floor patterns. For 1” -4” bases, I use plywood craft circles. You can buy 200 for $10 on amazon. Boao 1 Inch Unfinished Wood Slices Round Disc Circle Wood Pieces Wooden Cutouts Ornaments for Craft and Decoration (200 Pieces) https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07K8B9D7S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_pSZKFbM7WV686 Larger sized wood discs are very affordable as well. I have thought about buying a tool to make bases, but the wooden discs are cheap enough that it wouldn’t be worth the effort.
I prefer the aesthetic of flat wooden bases for use with TTRPGs or skirmish war games. Other companies sell plastic bases which are more varied in shape but are also far more expensive.
you can usually find neat types of bottles and local kitchy shops. near me we have a bunch of local businesses and a yankee candle that have all kinds of knick-knacks. problem you'll find is the bottles they'll sell are going to be a bit more expensive. A lot of crafters are making resin health potions using these glass bottles from amazon. and since they're cheap. only thing I'll say is that you may have issues with the resin detaching from the sides and leaving air pockets if you aren't using a pressure pot, as I learned very recently. they'll look super cool though. But good work on though for sure. Always be proud of making something yourself.
When you say clone, is it something like this?

Is this something somebody puts together that uses similar parts or something? I couldn’t figure out the relation between Prusa and Reprap guru selling it. I was hoping to buy it on amazon but didn’t see it but did see this

That is awesome. I recently tested a laser cutter for a few days and whish I had seen this then. Really great yet simple design.
As a surface to write on - at my paper goods store you can easily get transparent covers to wrap school books in that I use as a cheap battle matt Something like this
Wrap each board in it and bang you got a dry erase board.
I recently started hosting games on AirBnB Experiences (check out this link if you haven't heard of this before: https://www.airbnb.com/experiences/188703) and made a short-film/promo video too (https://youtu.be/1MZa5AFePBY) to leverage this awesome gameroom build we did a while ago.
Curious to know what you think about either of these projects -- since while poking around DIY subs again, I just discovered this cool sub and thought you might enjoy! :)
That's a great idea!
They do sell "bronze" ones as well:
This! and if you are lazy (like me) spray them bone white then a dark brown wash while still on the spru. Clip and touch up as needed.

What do you call breaking the bank? I got something similar to this lamp like 8 years ago and it still works, it doesn't light the room up too much, but it sure makes great ambience.
Like the other user mentioned upholstery foam might work too but it may be hard to find that thin. For some reason I cannot find a good example online of the foam I'm talking about as I usually get all of mine from the dumpster at work haha. I think this is more akin to what you are looking for https://www.amazon.com/Packing-Sheets-Polyurethane-Cushioning-Moving/dp/B092HJGYQQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_20_sspa?crid=JCWDWAOGQKIR&keywords=soft+packing+foam&qid=1661534204&sprefix=soft+packing+foa%2Caps%2C221&sr=8-20-spons&psc=1&sp...

Acoustics haven't been an issue. It could be luck, but I could also see it that the vine wall on the shelves are working as a bit of a sound dampener of sorts.
Chairs at the moment are a mismatch. I currently have a combo of 3 folding chairs and 3 desk chairs. I'm still looking to find the perfect set of somewhere between comfortable and not overly large.

I'd just pick one of these up. They usually come pretty sharp as is. When it's dulled, you just snap the tip off and move further down. Obviously these have a limited shelf life, but I have used a couple on leather and foam and some other construction materials, and they work pretty well. Cheaper than a nice hot wire cutter. A big box store (Walmart, Home Depot, etc.) will definitely carry these.
The multi colored ones are War World Scenics Mixed Flower, here's the amazon url

The rest of them were Army Painter grassland green and wild flowers
I use a combination of craft sand from the dollar store mixed with mod podge that I use as a combination texture paste/sealant. It works well for things that are supposed to come across natural stone, because of the way it sort of flows and deposits. It is also remarkably structural.
Also, these things. My fiancee bought a batch of something like 50 them for a thing that didn't work, but I've been gradually whittling her supply down. You can keep water in it to add dropwise into paint that needs thinning, or they work really well as small pressurized tanks, I've used them to suck up paint that pooled wrong, I've used them to blow loose ground cover off of specific places. Surprisingly versatile.
Thanks!!! I just picked up a large container of glass bead counters at Michaels Craft Store. Thought they'd look super cool for eggs.

Hey, I do this!! I bought a wifi projector on Amazon (sorry, they don’t carry mine anymore but it’s super similar to this one.). And I bought [this ceiling mount](www.amazon.com/dp/B07T4WX4KQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_X9QYW1K5YHN9HCDRP2M0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1).
I use Roll20 but any online TTRPG site would work. I connect with my laptop and make the projector a second screen. I have my DM map on my screen and the player map on the second screen, which is projected onto my dining room table. If I have a remote player, then they can just log into the Roll20 game and see the maps. The only trouble we had was audio; I am going to have to invest in a good mic that is designed to pick up our table conversation for him.

Get these: Amazon Basics Clear Sheet Protector for 3 Ring Binder, 8.5" x 11" - 100-Pack https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07R8D1RHS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_SN3GB5TP2NNJPF7NVG13

Trim trim the back page so that it fits into the screen.
For my GM screens I use one of these presentation booklets, because I run multiple games. You could easily get one of these and attach the pages (without the front cover or completely removed from the binding entirely) to one panel of the screen. Or just do what I do and put all your pages in there and then you can have tons of pages :) I also put stick on tabs on mine
I would look at creating some kind of bound plastic sheet pockets that the inserts could fit into. Basically what you have there already, except on the 2nd panel have a series of them that could be flipped through like a book (so they would flip to the left and cover the 1st panel). Then you would just have to decide which two are most heavily referenced and put them on the 3rd and 4th panel.
If those are 11"x8.5" panels, then you might be able to use regular plastic sheet protectors like these: https://www.amazon.com/Keepfiling-Landscape-Protectors-Heavyweight-Archival/dp/B01D4MSEHG. You'd just need to bind them on the short end and figure out how to attach them to the screen.
Sure!
I wouldn't buy the laser for just tiles, I do other work with it, but it's been great so far. This isn't the exact model, but it's closest I could find.

The size in the description is completely wrong. This was supposed to be about 9.5 inches long, and I was going to do a Horizonback Tortoise build. This tortoise is 4 inches long and inches high. The map it’s sitting on has a 1 inch grid for reference.
And wands too!
Proxxon also has their own line of rotary tools
Hey, I'm the original designer of this (free market so I'm not mad he's redesigned it themself) but if you're looking for the STL a few people have linked to the original free version and there's also the paid version on Cults (link below) which has the base piece with the counter.

It’s unclear what problem you’re trying to solve. If you’re looking for a way to pre-draw maps, then gaming paper or a pad of easel paper is a nice solution. These ones These ones come out to a little more than $.50 a sheet and are a nice size for most tables. These have the advantage of being able to use paints, crayons, markers and even 3D effects and are reusable. It’s my go-to for set-piece maps that I want to prepare ahead of the session.
Others mentioned laminate, which would work as well, or a thin piece of clear vinyl or plexiglass to draw on with wet erase markers.
Alternately, consider using rulers and go gridless.
My go-to website when trying to find or replace software is https://alternativeto.net.
It catalogs many programs that you can filter by platform and license. It's really helpful if you already know of a program that does more or less what you want.
I want to recommend this product at Amazon

I enjoy the crafting part, the cutting, gluing, inking. But when you're doing 300 of them, it just takes a LONG time and a lot of "doing" :P
The stands I got from Staples in bulk (like, batches of 100). But I checked when someone asked via PM and Staples doesn't sell them anymore...

Cool! I am more interested in minis, I use dungeons raft for maps rn and want to put minis on the tv. I was thinking of this one, is that the one you were thinking of?
Those are for power. With players using tablets or phones with DnD Beyond, and maybe VTT connections in the future, there are little power bricks in the cubbies.
Thanks! Aside from the ones that are references, I pretty much just mindlessly doodled away. I did have a look at this book cover beforehand. Still haven't read the thing but it looks cool.
For most of the adventure I used a dry erase map. However I got ambitious when it came to Wave Echo Cave and have made the entire thing out of xps foam, using BMC as inspiration (Black Magic Craft in YouTube)

I made these from scratch. The Ballista came from a YouTube video (not sure which one) and uses spring tension. The onager has much more firepower and is from the fantastic book The Art of the Catapult. They are both around mini scale and made with some scrap wood, and (in the case of the ballista) popsicle sticks.
https://www.amazon.com/Pathfinder-Flip-Mat-Basic-Terrain-Multi-Pack/dp/1601255578/ ? 4x A4, still cheaper, even fancier. You get the point.
https://www.amazon.com/Battle-Double-Markers-Polyhedral-Playing/dp/B075WS9DGL less than 20$ for a fancy one. Just sayin'.
I used sticker paper, this specific brand, however its a little pricier than others but its fairly waterproof so I don't have to worry about water spills. I already had some on hand for some projects I had done, but other less expensive papers would definitely do the job. For designing them, I used google drawings and just searched for each image.
Yes, I drew it on two sheets of gridded presentation paper. It’s this one:
TOPS Standard Easel Pads, 3-Hole Punched, 27 x 34 Inch, 1" Grid, White, 50 Sheets/Pad, Carton of 2 Pads (7902)
I love it. You can get a one-inch hole punch to speed up the process of cutting them out, and then use the one-inch foam furniture pads that are peel and stick. It makes the construction part 1000x easier.
One suggestion, I personally like the scissor style hole punch because you can actually see what you're cutting out. They're a bit more expensive, but you make less errors. And a caveat to this type of punch... I ended up going with a thicker paper because the bog-standard printer paper would tear when using this punch.
https://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-174360-1001-Medium-Circle-Squeeze/dp/B000OMYCXK
These foam pads are everywhere these day. Buy in bulk and do some price shopping for the best value.
https://www.amazon.com/Furniture-Adhesive-Scratch-Protector-Hardwood/dp/B07TYCPX22/
Also, as a bonus, the hole punches come in larger sizes and even things like hexagons, which we know are the bestagons. I went with a 1.5 circle for large creatures instead of the 2 inch circle. But mainly only because that's what fit into my storage containers.
I'm not OP, but those look like spice jars. I found [https://www.amazon.com/Aozita-Glass-Spice-Jars-Bottles/dp/B072N4Y9XY](these) on Amazon for reference.
They look like 4 oz jars, and they have a bit of room. I'm really curious if these [https://www.amazon.com/Hexagon-Mini-Glass-Silver-Labels/dp/B01L8KRS0A](hexagon jars) would fit all 7 dice. Since as we all no the hexagon is the bestagon.
I got it from Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00S8SKX0I/ The method I used was to fill the engraving in with the stone and then drip thin CA glue all over the top. Sand flat and then use micro mesh pads to polish it up. I've had great luck doing the same with metal powders from Amazon.
Looks great! For what it's worth, you can get intro level wood burners super cheap. I've done tons of projects with them and they work great. No need for the expensive ones unless you're really doing complicated stuff. This walnut hollow burner is only 13 bucks and comes with tips. They sell an almost identical one in both Michaels and AC Moore (US stores, not sure where you're based) for a similarly cheap price.
Practicaly yes, keep the paper, it serves as a reminder/note what happened in the last session, especially if there is a lot of time between sessions.
It's called pen and paper for a reason, people played it like that since the 70's. I would say draw your maps ( dungeon, forest camp, ect) with a ballpointpen on squared paper before the session. When you play with the group you all can use pencils to write the starting letter of your characters on the map to represent where you are. Cheapest and easiest solution.
If you have access to a printer you could also just print a map.
Otherwise this might be a good start https://www.amazon.com/-/de/dp/1601255578/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=Pathfinder+Map&qid=1605957233&sr=8-4
Good luck on your first session.

Chessex makes a set you can order on Amazon. They are called 10mm dice and are a bit smaller as you can see. I got some at my LGS for about 6 bucks a set.
You can also get them cheaper from China if you don't mind the wait. I can't vouch for the quality on these though.
I got them from Hobby Lobby, but you can find a lot of different styles on Amazon, as well, though you have to order them in bulk.
I have to check that site out! It looks very cool.
I hope it’s okay to post links. It’s on Amazon for $20

Are you using cardstock or regular printer paper? I've noticed that the punches can't really do thin paper very well because the paper will cumple and jam before the blades can do the work. I print all my token and paper miniatures onto 110 lb. cardstock and the punches seem to work fine.
I've also noticed that if I try to punch a hole too close to the edge of the paper it can still crumple and won't cut, so you need to space your tokens out a little bit.
I'm using a small transducer that I grabbed off amazon for about 10 bucks.

It works by atomzing water, so the fog effect is in fact just a very fine mist. It's fine enough that for short runs there's hardly any residue, but running it for a while leaves the tiles slightly damp.
Thanks. I got the Dwarf from the Icons of The Realms Starter Set. It comes with 5 others, along with the Dwarf.

Quick Amazon search for "blank pill organizer" brings up this. Might be an option if you can't get the print off.
If the letters aren't terribly raised, you might be able to paint over them too.
I got them from Michael's I think they were on sale, I think like 15 trees for $20 US then washed all of the snow off and flocked them. Here's the Amazon link.
I have no clue where to find them in the UK though unfortunately
The eyes are made from glass cabochons. I believe the center eye is a 25mm cab and the others are 6mm. You can find them at most craft stores, usually in the jewelry area. Here is an amazon link: Clear Glass Dome Tile Cabochon.
The eyes actually aren't painted, they're printed. I found some monster eye and dragon eye images online, printed them out and adhered them to the back of the cabochons.
I wonder what the monitor looks like through infrared? (some phones have infra red cameras that can be seen with custom apps https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.caddish_hedgehog.hedgecam2 )
IF you have nearly no infrared light, you could paint the base of the mini with hi vis infrared reflecting paint, or retro-reflective paint, and have an infrared light source from the camera for potentially better tracking. (no more silhouettes, just tracking the bright, broken circle.
No worries, I get it all the time & used to let it slide but had someone react badly when they found out "I had tricked them" so now I just throw it out there.

Something you could try is to create flat tokens using cardstock. I do (did) this when I go (went) to cons...they're a lot easier to travel with. While I use a 1" hole punch, if you look at https://www.amazon.com/EK-Tools-Circle-Punch-0-50-Inch/dp/B0090JVDNA/ , they make them in multiple sizes. I *think* that the .5 or .375 inch one would do you well.
Link to amazon. I used to buy something called Flek-Stone by the case 20 years ago, because I could do all my terrain in 10 minutes, lol. https://www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-7992830-Stone-Creations-Spray/dp/B000PIKFK2
You could definitely go that route, though there are already things like that out there that you could use like Jelly Belly's Bertie Bott's Every Flavor jelly beans [Amazon]. While not in dice form, it'd save a lot of your time.
Another idea that I explored, but unfortunately was never able to use in-game, was using these Starburst Enemy Markers [Thingverse]. That way when someone gets the kill they get to eat the defeated enemy as a prize. Not quite the same idea, but still within realm of using food type items in fun ways.
If you then combined the two, your players would never know if what they were about to eat are normal flavors or something a bit more... questionable.
I use packing foam. The 1/8" clear stuff to diffuse my led's. Its transparent with a million tiny bubbles to break up the light source. Fairly cheap you can buy it in huge rolls at Walmart

The one I posted on r/minipainting? I actually got those pieces out of a WizKids deepcuts pack for $5 at my lfgs. I think it’s called camp fire and sitting log if you want to find it.
Edit: I found it on Amazon under the name I gave but it says it won’t be release until June of this year. https://www.amazon.com/WizKids-Deep-Cuts-Unpainted-Miniatures/dp/B0829C81L5
This manager is specifically from a box called massive darkness, it includes 72 miniatures of high detail that are unpainted, it in itself is its own game, a board game, dungeon crawler. It comes with pretty elaborate dungeon tiles, Dice, tokens, enemy detail cards, weapon and equipment detail cards. It’s a pretty great game but it is slightly expensive. I’ll put the link for the Amazon here. And also I’ll put a link for the unboxing on YouTube so you can see exactly what’s in it
I got them on Amazon
Thank you for the kind words! I am putting the box to use for the first time in my session this weekend. Looking forward to it!

We play on couch and coffee table, so also have limited table space, which we have overcome with storage clipboards for character sheets and bead organizers for rolling dice.
I cut a rectangular template out of mdf and used a trim router with a top bearing bit.
Similar to this.
After a couple days work cutting cardboard and taping it with packing tape, I ended up with this. The session went pretty well, the players were impressed. We have only played Lost Mine and this first chapter of Saltmarsh so far. We printed out papers for Wave Echo Cave and Thunder Tree, and the Saltmarsh haunted mansion. That's the most we've had until now when I had this unique of a situation to create something like this. Honestly I haven't read too far into the further chapters to see if there would be the opportunity for another build. Let me know, and I might get to work on planning it.
SPOILERS FOR STORY/CAMPAIGN CONTENT: >!The top level of enemies on the ship was a fun fight, our Ranger2/Cleric1 used Guiding Bolt on the Wizard after seeing him overlooking the edge of the ship, starting combat immediately. After him and the others (Paladin3, and Bard3) climbing up the ship and fighting for a turn or two, the wizard combo'ed Misty Step and Gust of Wind, blowing them all off, failing their strength checks. After they climbed back up again(really quickly, impressive rolls for Athletics both times) the wizard did another misty step combo with Fog Cloud this time, the Ranger/Cleric used destroy water to clear the fog, and the Bard used Thunderwave, pushing off the captain and first mate. !<
>!After this epic battle we took a break until next session where they persuasively convinced the Bosun and Crew to join them, and learned the will of the Lizardmen. Next session they may bring the stolen goods back to the council and bring the lizardmen and their purchased weapons to their home.!<
Oh yeah, and those minis in the pictures are from the Lord of the Rings monopoly set, pretty nice for DnD
And the paper map used that was taped to the cardboard was made by Maps of the Mad Mage( <strong>u/deleeta87</strong> )
