You can download DVD Decrypter to rip DVD's and then use Handbrake to encode.
If freaking Google would have the Nexus 10 in stock in Australia by now I would have had one to advise you of optimum settings. But from what I can see, it seems to playback most formats just fine.
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk this has worked fine for me, I think you need to get it in MTP mode, or USB storage... forget which. Just remeber to save recovered files to PC and not back to the tablet!!
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk:_undelete_file_for_FAT instructions. Hope this helps :)
I just us an app called flashify https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cgollner.flashify&hl=en
and download the recovery img for 2.8.7 from here https://dl.twrp.me/manta/
and us the flashify app to flash it.
I use Nexus Media Importer and ES File Explorer.
Nexus Media Importer can read and write NTFS drives no problem. Root is not required.
ES File Explorer can read NTFS, but not write. Root also not required.
Usually I have no need to delete or edit files on the USB key, so I tend to use ES the most. It's a great file manager, the best one out there as far as I'm concerned, so I'm usually using it for other things anyway so it's just easy to connect the USB stick and keep using the same app.
I do keep Nexus Media Importer around for when I want to delete files, or copy files onto the USB sticks.
I wouldn't say "any" micro to hdmi will work as some just are not compatible with certain TVs. I was having a lot of trouble getting this function to work using this cable. I took that cable back and bought this one and everything worked fine. I am sure there are other less expensive cables out there that will also work.
I had this exact same problem, and it turned out to be the shitty cable. I took the cable I initially purchased back to the store and bought this one, and everything worked fine. I am sure there are other less expensive cables out there that will also work.
There's a better one on Amazon that has a touchpad as well. Plus the keyboard is magnetic so it can stay in the case or remove it. I have one and it's pretty awesome for what it is..
The only thing I don't like about it is the kickstand on the back is a bit shorter than would be ideal but I just put something under it and it's fine.

That being said, android tablets don't make the best laptops. It is super handy for the times you do need it though I find it's easier to just use the touchscreen for pretty much everything aside from typing entire paragraphs or something.. And even that I would usually do on my phone unless it's multiple paragraphs that need to be super organized.
If you really want a small cheap typing machine I would grab a cheap chromebook.
A lockscreen pattern will be fine. Firstly just find a VPN service you like the look of (Private Internet Access, and Mullvad are two I'd recommend) and get a free trial/buy a month. Go to Settings>Wireless and Networks>More>VPN. Add a VPN and type the details you were given when you signed up to the service earlier. That's it! You'll probably get a little notification in the top bar reminding you that your VPN is connected.
Ah right. There are several free apps on google play that should be able to help:

Total commander has some non-root usb plugin.
And there is the Nexus Media Importer ... that's the app I use most of the time.

Hey. I'm from India as well. No problem ordering with non-US cards. Use a program like Hotspot Shield to conceal your location to the Play Store. That way you can access the listing. Pay like normal, just make sure the billing is done to a US address. Shipping too, obviously.
I got an Asus Zenpad S 8 Z580C-B1, 32 gb. It's very quick, nice to watch tv and movies on. The bloatware it comes with is surprisingly useful, if a little pastel in nature. $190 at Amazon.
I know this isn't eh official one, but imho it's much better. MoKo slim cover . I've had it for a couple of years - still looks like new :)
I use the Motorola wireless keyboard. Got it last year and has worked great ever since. I bought it during a sale and ended up paying $18 for it, but even at $30 it seems worth it.
I found out that the Nexus refuses to identify any micro USB charger that isn't plugged directly into the wall so I bought the Pogo cable. It is expensive especially for a 2 year old device. The Nexus 10 is still fantastic and beats the Surface 2 RT, iPad Air 2 and a few other tablets I've tried extensively. Freeing up the micro USB port is what convinced me to buy it.
There are alternative generic chargers that are $10-$12 cheaper such as this one.
If you have problems connecting to an unpowered hard drive, (you may hear clicking noises or other oddities, too) you might need more power, as another commenter mentioned. I use one of these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CXAC1ZW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 with any USB charger plugged into the female micro port, and it works fine.
Pogo OR hp charger:
I don't think this is helpful if you don't already own one... but I own an hp Touchpad usb charger and have charged my Nexus 10 with it every night for over a year. The charging speed is phenomenal and I have no battery issues.
Full disclosure, I can't compare the charging speed to the Pogo charger (I don't own one) but I can compare to regular 1.0A which is horribly painful AND 2.1A which is meh. This is definitely better than 2.1A.
Final benefit to the hp Touchpad charger is that you can charge any phone or tablet with it that uses a usb charging port. I occassionally push super-fast emergency charging to my Nexus 5 phone on the hp Touchpad charger. I've read that fast charging isn't good for a battery, but occassional use on my Nexus 5 and my former Galaxy Nexus had 0 obvious negative side effects over the last couple years.
Note: You must use the combo of wall plug + hp usb cable for the fast charging. If you use a different wall plug or non-hp usb cable the whole thing reverts to a slow charging mode. Also, I never use the hp usb cable for data transfer. Might not be reliable on non-hp devices. I just use it for charging.
TL;DR ... Pogo is probably best, but a well-tested multi-purpose option is the hp Touchpad charger.
Just use a root file manager or a build.prop editor app. If you don't have root, use TWRP to copy the build.prop to your SD card in it's file manager, edit it on your PC, then transfer it back. Backup the old build.prop and replace it with the new one :)
Optionally, if you DO have root, there's an app on the Play Store that does it for you, here
Here's the file path: /system/build.prop
