Well, you could give users 0MB of storage, but then they wouldn't be able to save the stream.
I guess you could also try to give them a few GB of storage and with CSS, remove the upload-button? :D
Also, storage can be found pretty cheap: https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-box
UI for simpleertube reminds me of the type of sites you'd see when browsing the web on a T9 feature phone, before smartphones became a thing.
Super basic, but as a tradeoff things load lightning fast, even on very slow computers.
Also, was happy to see that simpleertube is only one of the many projects under the "simple-web" umbrella:
>Our goal is to create interfaces for public websites so you can browse them, without JavaScript, and with minimal CSS. Websites that are designed to be viewed inside of text-based browsers like lynx
This is a very cool and useful set of projects. /u/AnotherRetroGameFan thanks for posting
You got the concept right.
But unless you host your video streaming platform, you always have to fear someone else determining what you can upload. Might be youtube moderators or some random peertube sysadmin.
At least on peertube you could try to find a friendly instance where you can talk to the administrator. https://joinpeertube.org/instances#instances-list
And just to give you a quick update, the instance is at 11 % right now.
So it seem that the ping is working again.
When you have enough uptime, I suggest that you use the contact form to ask for them to add again your instance in the front page (or ask the reason).
Other thing to consider that may have been the cause: while the page https://instances.joinpeertube.org/instances is only moderated against illegal instance (from the French's law point of view), the front page (https://joinpeertube.org/) on the other hand is curated from the list of all instances.
But again, contact them directly. The first reason was the uptime for sure, so we need to find why you had such poor uptime. The best thing is to check on the code how they ping exactly. Maybe they do a request to the API and it didn't get response?
Sadly I can't help more, I'm also just an instance owner. It's a little instance but I have 1TB of redundancy from other instance.
You'd do a LOT better with fundraising if you didn't censor the most popular instance on peertube; bittube.video from directories like joinpeertube.org . Talk about shooting yourself in the foot!
>I did. Please see my OP.
Just seen that and good to hear :)
yeah, another website seems the only good choice then. It's their website after all and I am completely fine with their website for now. I think they just select some trending channels (not in the far right) and that ends up with some leftish channels, because currently average peertube community (from my experience) is somehow leftish.
You're free to do yours, and I support you in trying to do your own better website.
Also, joinpeertube.org is hardcoded in the about page. Just to let you know :)
And thanks for your work in this community
Yeah, like WonderingDane mentioned, certain instances don't allow people to make new accounts. You will need to find another one.
This page might help, it can filter by ones which allow you to upload and how much storage they allow. I recommend finding one with lots of follower instances:
Monetization through advertisement is against the philosophy of PeerTube: it is based on surveillance capitalism, and binds you to the will of an advertiser. This is why PeerTube creators won’t add native monetizetion through ads.
But PeerTube has a plugins system, and the team won’t do anything to prevent instance administrators from using plugins that set up this kind of monetization. That’s true freedom :)
See the FAQ for more information
>I'm aware that the decentralized nature of peertube is resistant to moderation, but I know the devs will be pushed hard to exert control on instances by those who have turned grievance into a profession.
They may try to pressure however they can, but given that controlling someone else's instance is literally impossible I don't really see any reason to worry about this. To quote Chocobozzz from the issue,
>Peertube is just a software so I'm not sure to understand the issue.
And then they kinda switch to talking about moderating joinpeertube.org instead, which is... whatever. It's one group's private website.
Hi,
In fact, when you open the website, you are actually opening one of many instances. The videos you will see will be those hosted by the instance you are on but also the videos hosted by the other instances.
Be careful, the administrator of your instance can choose not to display the videos of some instances if he wants or even hide the NSFW videos.
Framatube is an instance of the French association Framasoft.
Peertube.com is an instance belonging to someone I don't know.
The only official site is https://joinpeertube.org or the github repository.
Concerning your account, you don't have to have one to watch videos. If you want to create one, you must find an instance that allows you to create an account. Not all instances allow them.
Your username will look like this: @
It will allow you to comment on all videos (even those on another instance) only from the instance where you created your account.
Your account will also give you access to the Fediverse.
I hope I answered your questions.
Sorry about my English, I'm French.

I've used Nord for years. VPN to Tor. The client has a double as well which u can for example VPN to Canada VPN to U.S. to Tor. That's super slow though lol. Nord diagram on standard onion over VPN is about 1/4 the way down. Catch them at the right time of year and it's $2 a mo for like 3yrs or something.
You could take a look at Mullvad VPN. It supports Port forwarding as well as OpenVPN and the secure Wireguard Protocol, including automatic key rotation.
Here I extracted a list of blocked ports:
port 25 – to prevent spam
ports 137, 138, 139, 445 – to protect customers from a Microsoft SMB/CIFS security issue
ports 1900 and 2869 – to protect customers from malicious UPnP configuration
It think 5$/mo is a reasonable price, and I like that there is no excessive marketing crap like the giant Nord and ExpressVPN do it
I would also recommend ProtonVPN as trustworthy provider, but it lacks port forwarding (thus no direct outgoing connection in PeerTube) completely
> While traveling a dedicated PC is very cumbersome to take with you (I'm in Korea for 3 month now for a business trip), the Chromecast is really small and I already bought it a couple of years ago so I took it with me to watch Netflix, YouTube and now PeerTube on the Hotel TV.
That's understandable, though have you ever considered one of those USB-C dongles where you can use HDMI out on your phone? Ideal for hotels and this specific dongle even has an Ethernet adapter if there's network jacks in your hotel.
