Just host a Peertube instance youeself. Doesn't requires that much bandwidth because it utilized peer to peer technology (multiple people watching simultaneously will help eachother)
It already exists!
https://joinpeertube.org/
https://peer.tube/
I'd love to see a couple big names switch to it. I could be mistaken, but I don't think the draw of YouTube is the interface. If you're already a big name, the platform doesn't matter as much.
> Nothing has the server capacity with a competitive business model to enable it, so probably never. Anything that did appear would need immense investment with no guarantee of return.
Unless they remove those requirements from the equation using a federated P2P system like https://joinpeertube.org/en/
Well my good sir, let me inform you that anyone could be youtube, while the solution isn't feature complete yet, there is currently a very nice alternative in the form of Peertube. some youtuber I follow are now uploading on a peertube instance as well as youtube in an effort to limit google's right of life and death over their business.
or create your own! https://joinpeertube.org
turns out, peer to peer is pretty good at solving bandwidth problems and not trying to control everything through centralization opens the path to a lot of clever ideas (like federations, check their video it is pretty well put)
Bummer.. looks like I wont be watching YouTube as much. This hacking content is the main thing I watch on the site. YouTube has been a valuable resource for me in my academic career, its time to move on
The scope of this policy will affect aspiring ethical hackers, computer scientists, people looking to educate themselves about computer risk, and the whole of the infosec community.
Where will the community pub/sub now?
Lets explore new video content delivery options..
This article gives many options: https://twitgoo.com/best-youtube-alternatives/
I believe the place is on the decentralized web two options here are Dtube and PeerTube.
Dtube:
hosted by IPFS pinning so it is accessible through the any web browser.
has rating system that works similar to Reddit's, in regard to the power of up/down votes.
Provides incentives for content creators, in the form of cryptocurrency
PeerTube:
a torrent software application and may not be as available as Dtube.. I still need to check this one out..
Has anyone ever used either of these?
What are your thoughts regarding the implications of this new policy?
These peer-to-peer options seem favorable imo what do you think? any other options of the like?
> They're like the Linux of video sharing.
They really, really, really aren't. [GNU/]Linux has a philosophical foundation of Free Software; an ideology based on freedom and sharing.
DailyMotion and Vimeo are privately owned, and are not Free as in Freedom.
PeerTube is the Linux of video sharing.
We kind of already have a standard for that: ActivityPub. It's designed more for Twitter clones (with Mastodon as the biggest example) but it can work with pretty much any generic social media content. There's already proof of concepts for Reddit and Photo sharing and alternatives for Twitter (Mastodon) and YouTube (PeerTube) that use it.
Ironically, ICQ used a proprietary protocol from what I remember. The other big IM services used XMPP which is what you're thinking of.
Hey here's an idea... What if we just stopped using YouTube and started our own federation of PeerTube which is like an open-source, decentralized, peer2peer alternative to YouTube. Since its decentralized the more people that use it, the faster and better it works.
>PeerTube is a software that you install on a web server. It allows you to create a video hosting website, so create your "homemade YouTube".
>The difference to YouTube is that it's not intended to create a huge platform centralizing videos from the whole world on a single server farm (which is horribly expensive).
>On the contrary, PeerTube's concept is to create a network of multiple small interconnected video hosting providers.
Time for PeerTube: https://joinpeertube.org/en/
They have been rolling out some great updates lately to the software; it's a federated platform developed by a non-profit. So systematically different than platforms like YouTube, Dailymotion or Vimeo.
Breadtubers need to start joing instances of it, first maybe just mirror the content (&promote PeerTube on the YT channel) and later if YouTube actually shuts the door, fully move to it.
Also consider donating to the non-profit that develops the software: https://soutenir.framasoft.org
There are P2P web browser based alternatives like PeerTube (https://joinpeertube.org), but very few are using them, so even fewer uploads to them.
But there are a few good examples based on this technology like the Swedish alternative new source SwebTV that was deplatformed from YouTube (and others).
Decentralized Youtube already exists anyway.
And they are not using it. As if they actually prefer centralized platforms and don´t actually give a shit about decentralization and are only in for the (youtube) money
What if they joined peertube. It is a youtube alternative and does not have strict monetization giudelines. You can read about it here. peertube FAQs
Wordpress.org is pretty much the self-hosted version of Wordpress
PeerTube is a federated video hoster, pretty much a YouTube alternative where you host the videos yourself.
As /u/snuzet says, this is not for the feint of heart. At bare minimum you would want to firewall your hosting machine off from the rest of your network just in case.
And here's the main site, if anyone's interested.
Ideally there could be something like BreadTube-instance, where hosting costs could be shared and so on.
However, PeerTube (and other federated social media platforms) are generally not very friendly to ads, so the creators would have to rely on crowdfunding for income.
Try a site like PeerTube and then re-upload videos to youtube once your channel gets sorted out.
PeerTube is youtube but actually good. :P It's essentially decentralised youtube.
You can look for an instance that fits your needs. :) https://joinpeertube.org/instances#instances-list
> contributing in a tangible way is probably above my IQ level.
I disagree with this. Two impactful things that virtually anyone can do, certainly anyone posting here:
1) Talk about cryptocurrency. You don't have to be a shill for any particular coin or in any particular venue, but normalizing (ugh, that word) cryptocurrency is a group effort.
2) Make purchases using cryptocurrencies; consumer demand —> merchant demand —> further adoption. Make p2p payments with friends.
> The other half is that a slightly-more-permissive-than-youtube video hosting service is apparently so haram, that it needs to rely on the same infrastructure as drug dealers and assassins.
Yeah, I agree, that's a problem. PeerTube is a decentralized effort in this space.
And by the way, it uses ActivityPub for federation and one can use it's Mastodon account to comment on a PeerTube video.
More details and instances lists at https://joinpeertube.org/en/ and https://instances.joinpeertube.org/instances
The latest update on this article mentions that the Blender Foundation set up a Peertube instance to host their own videos.
It's worth mentioning that Peertube is currently running a crowdfunding campaign, so if you think decentralization and libre software options are a good thing, you can chip in!
They have put up a test instance of peertube on their own servers, hopefully this brings more attention to peertube as an alternative to other video hosting/sharing solutions.
I prefer Peertube. It isn't just a single site, like most competitors, but rather anyone can launch their own site that interconnects with other sites also using peertube.
Peertube (aka federated publishing) is the answer to this. It works by being a technology and not a single site, but that you can comment and like videos from other sites that use the same technology.
Here is a list of sites that use Peertube: https://joinpeertube.org/instances#instances-list
TL;DR it seems like they want to drive people to a paid third party "pro" captioning service. The idea here is, I am assuming, YouTube will take a cut.
It deals with money. YouTube will never listen to petitions. And if people threaten to leave, Where?
Thats why there needs to be alternatives like LBRY and PeerTube. The more people use these, the more likely content creators will hop on (sort of like the chicken vs egg situation). YouTube is a monopoly, and like with all monopolies, they will refuse to change for obvious reasons.
Pour que ça prenne il faut être meilleur que Youtube. Ce qui demande des contributions sinon des donations. Si chaque vidéaste se plaignant de l'algo passait sour peertube, ça irait beaucoup plus vite.
There exists a Free Open Source Software (FOSS) competitor: Peertube (https://joinpeertube.org/).
It is a decentralized service that is federated with the fairly well-known FOSS Facebook alternative Mastodon as well as several other FOSS social media alternatives that are underpinned by the Activity Pub protocol.
PeerTube! It's easily the greatest option out there, if you ask many. A hopeful, decentralised, and free platform that doesn't just promise these things but delivers them well. It deserves and needs all of the support it can get.
MediaGoblin certainly doesn't seem dead - if anything, you can contact its author, cwebber, at https://dustycloud.org/contact/
For pictures and videos, there are federated instances of Pixelfed and PeerTube that you can use. https://joinpeertube.org/ https://pixelfed.social/
Corporate censorship will only hasten the adoption and popularity of technology like peertube: https://joinpeertube.org/ "Take back control of your videos. A decentralized video hosting network, based on free/libre software."
Neither itunes nor Youtube are obligated to provide a platform for Jones to publish. Most of my few posts here on this sub are in opposition to the types of guys you are arguing with, but neither youtube nor itunes are required to publish any particular bit of content. (And in the case of itunes, my understanding is that they essentially just curate rss links - they don't actually host/publish the podcasts anyhow.)
>I'm asking who's job is it to determine who gets to control what media I am able to consume?
When nearly everyone in the world made the itunes podcast list king, and it became the source for nearly all podcast apps, we gave this power to Apple.
When nearly everyone in the world decided that Youtube was going to be the only video hosting site that would get enough traffic for creators to make money from it, we gave this power to youtube.
I'm not saying this is OK. We do this over and over and over again with internet-age things it seems. We put all our eggs in one basket because we think this basket is so trustworthy and secure - then we lose our shit when it starts throwing some of the eggs out.
And I should mention that I'm not a fan of AJ at all. BUT those things need to happen for the benefit of everyone, not just the people I agree with.
Apple and Youtube aren't stopping AJ from publishing. They just aren't helping him do it anymore. Nor are they required to.
Also, I'm betting there are RSS feed links that still work. But 75% of people probably have no idea whatsoever what to do with those.
I'm rooting for Peertube right now. It uses P2P streaming which means popular videos won't hurt the server's performance. It doesn't have a lot of content right now since it's a relatively young platform, but if it does pick up, it will probably be the most viable option for a YouTube replacement since it's possible to run without multi-million dollar servers.
I recommend PeerTube.
It's free, open source, open protocol, decentralized, and federated, meaning anyone can create a server for free and all servers can still communicate with each other by speaking the same language. If you create a server, you own it and it's completely under your control.
Since peertube is decentralized, anyone can spin up a peertube server and upload whatever they want. This is called an instance. Different instances can become 'federated' which allows you to see videos from another user's instance on the primary instance you are signed up on.
While true, there isn't much content - even on US/EU instances, hopefully that will begin to change as people get sick of youtube. That being said, i've heard of some instances that have mostly STEAM/STEM videos and typically these types of instances are focused more on education than entertainment.
This link is for the main directory, which lists most of the public peertube instances: https://joinpeertube.org/instances#instances-list
I also found this in the original reddit post: https://tilvids.com/
LBRY makes it very easy to mirror existing youtube content, but unfortunately it is not immune to eventually inheriting the same issues as youtube, as it doesn't appear to be interested in federation with other platforms. Sure, you could create your own instance of LBRY since the code is open-source, but since there is (AFAIK) no federation with ActivityPub, you'll be completely on your own, and will have to create an entirely new video catalog from scratch. You won't be able to connect your instance of LBRY to the main LBRY instance to share videos.
If LBRY were to be bought out by Google or Amazon, we'd essentially be right back to square one, and begin the cycle of escaping to the promised land yet again.
The only video hosting service that is 100% immune to inheriting youtube's problems is PeerTube, as it is decentralized, federated, and open source. I would recommend peertube.social as a good general instance.
If LBRY ever publicly stated they would be willing to federate with PeerTube/ActivityHub, I would support them 100%, but I suspect they are not interested in such a collaboration.
Q: Is PeerTube bad for privacy? Isn't my IP shared with everyone else who's watching the same video that I'm watching?
A: The use of p2p (webtorrents) is optional and can be disabled by any one of us, or even on an instance-level. But if you decide to leave p2p on, then yeah, "in theory, someone with enough technical skills could create a script that tracks which IP is downloading which video. In practice, this is much more difficult because [of these reasons]"
Q: If you disable p2p (webtorrents) does this mean that your instance will stop being decentralized?
A: No. P2p (webtorrents) only help a PeerTube instance to reduce server load and bandwidth. PeerTube is decentralized because of ActivityPub, not because of p2p (webtorrents).
Q: Should I be afraid that a video can have 0 peers which would mean that no one is seeding that video?
A: No. 0 peers probably means a bug or smth (IDK) because all videos have at least 1 peer - the server on which that video is hosted. In theory 0 peers could mean that that server is down.
Q: Since PeerTube uses p2p (webtorrents) to deliver us those videos, does this mean that I have to leave my browser tab opened so that others can watch that video as well?
A: No. As I've said, all videos have at least 1 peer so all videos will be available to everyone, always. However, if you wanna help the server save bandwidth and server resources, then yes you could do that, but that's totally optional.

joinpeertube.org is hosting an F.A.Q. page, make sure to check it out as well.
Peertube has been around for a while already. This is just for the next round of enhancements.
There's a bunch of instances, some very well moderated and others very poorly moderated. You can search for and check out instances at https://joinpeertube.org/instances#instances-list I don't use peertube enough (other than links found on mastodon etc) to know of any high quality instances off the top of my head.
But having owners (and delegates) of instances be respon for moderation of a federated network is actually working out fairly well for the fediverse so far. Of course, not perfectly. For every well-run instance there is at least one shitty gab instance. But when you find (or make!) an instance that works for you, it is magic.
+1 for PeerTube because it federates with other instances to make a mesh network of videos, so even if I don’t know of your server or content, it will come up in a search at any PeerTube instance if they’re federated with yours. It also uses BrowserTorrent to make sure videos that get popular don’t overload your bandwidth.
Why not both PeerTube and Minds? IMO Minds is more developed, but as PeerTube grows I think that will be the best video-sharing platform. So why not upload videos to both platforms? You get the best of both worlds!
And as a side note, don't use DTube... PeerTube even brings up some issues with DTube in their FAQ under "Why does PeerTube use the ActivityPub federation protocol? Why not IPFS / d.tube / Steemit?"
Basically what it comes down to is, Steemit is a centralized platform where other users can censor each other. I would also read "The ugly truth behind Steemit".
> I hope that we will move away from this murky business model at some point but I don’t see many signs of this sadly (please comment if there are!)
PeerTube is kind of becoming a thing.
It uses peer-to-peer-networking, meaning your browser sends parts of the video you're currently watching to other people watching it, to avoid needing giant servers like Google has them for YouTube.
As a result, they don't even have a business model. It's volunteers running the servers and then some other people donating to those volunteers.
This also means that they don't need to turn a profit after investing tons of money, which has been the downfall of other YouTube competitors so far when they couldn't attract enough users in time.
We need to all start creating and interconnecting Peertube instances. I'm transitioning everything I(In my personal archive of ~900GB of offline Youtube videos on various topics) can off of Plex and on to Peertube and encourage others to do the same. The lack of a Peertube app for popular streaming devices is an important shortcoming, but Peertube is the best option I've used for a self-hosted, free video streaming service which is capable of mirroring content between connected instances. https://joinpeertube.org/en/home/
I've never heard of Odysee, so I looked it up. This article was the fourth Duck result. I don't know if the title is accurate or defamatory, but either way, big yikes.
Have you considered putting your content on PeerTube?
You got the concept right.
But unless you host your video streaming platform, you always have to fear someone else determining what you can upload. Might be youtube moderators or some random peertube sysadmin.
At least on peertube you could try to find a friendly instance where you can talk to the administrator. https://joinpeertube.org/instances#instances-list
Yep. I'm trying to use Peer Tube when I can. I hate Google and the only reason I still have a Google account is to get past their stupid (sinister?) "age verification" requirement on some videos. While I appreciate the need for child privacy, you're absolutely right that there already is a whole YouTube Kids app already.
Well, there are two ways to be involved with peertube,
self hosted, and remote hosted.
See if you set up your own peertube instance, you can be a part of the federation, but still maintain your video's locally, but this means using your own storage, your own bandwidth, and having the technical know-how and hardware, to host a server yourself
it's also possible to login to a remote host, which works more like youtube or similar, in which you upload your content to someone elses server.
This is also how mastadon and other federated services work.
Peertube.social was one of the largest communities, but it doesn't stop "peertube" as a whole from existing, there are many many many other instances, that people could share their videos on, or like said, host their own.

https://joinpeertube.org/instances#instances-list
This is a great way to find other instances, many of them revolve around a theme, like gaming videos, or educational, comedy, Activisim, Tech .etc
others are more general purpose or catch-all but there are plenty out there, and still all interconnected.
This is not about free speech. In this case YouTube has the free speech rights to publish whatever they want or not to publish whatever they want
But we can show our disapproval of the bad quality offered by this corporate silo platform own by a surveillance company that sells our data to globally. If this dumb decision is not revoked, I will move as much viewing as I can to other platforms.
This kind of incidents is a good reason to move away from monopolistic corporate platforms to open decentralized platforms such as PeerTube.
A site? No.
The web was created so that infinite indexes to data could exist. They are simply linked with hyperlinks.
Everyone just going to one site kind of defeats the purpose of the web. In fact, then there is nothing webby about it. It's just isolated dots with nothing connecting them.
No youtube doesn't care about its viewers and content creators, and they never will.
The irony though, is that youtube basically stayed the same for like 20 years or however long it's been around. The reason they are making changes is because they are on some level listening to some subset of their userbase. The thing about one site for everyone though, is that there will always be people who are unhappy with it.
You might want to look at PeerTube, which is open-source, self-hosted, decentralized, and uses P2P: https://joinpeertube.org/#what-is-peertube
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PeerTube
It uses WebRTC to do realtime peer-to-peer connections through a web browser. It's being pushed as a standard by W3C. So again, your idea that "browsers don't allow for incoming connections from random users online" is wrong. If you want, you could get your questions answered in the PeerTube FAQ instead of being passive-aggressive about technologies that you don't think exist.
As for your second point -- the whole point of a federated system is that the load gets spread out over multiple servers. No one server is going to be hosting every video. Instead, there's many small servers, each hosting maybe a terabyte or so of videos. These are set up by tech enthusiasts and people who want to see PeerTube grow.
It's the same reason why Linux exists, or open-source software in general -- people aren't in this for money; maintaining and moderating a server is a hobby for them. It's like being a Reddit moderator: you don't really get anything out of the deal, yet Reddit moderators exist. But because you're only one small node in a large network (and you can choose to set limits on uploads to your node if you wish), you don't really need to worry about hosting exabytes of data. You just host as much as you want to; whether that be a few Gigabytes for your own personal stuff or terabytes of videos from everyone else.
>outbe started putting back-to-back ads, and realized that nobody actively tried to stop them so they just kept them.
TIL that some people don't use adblocker
Obvious reminder that nothing prevents you to use some alternative to youtube (most viable project nowaday being peertube which is free and decentralized https://joinpeertube.org/ )
> ActivityPub
Thanks for responding. I did look into that before - specifically PeerTube.
https://github.com/Chocobozzz/PeerTube
https://open.tube/videos/overview
However mine is a bit different. Mine won't have "instances" as peertube does, nor would it use WebTorrent. Mine would simply be a directory for metadata. Only the video file will be hosted by the content creator.
PeerTube has a problem of discoverability as each instance is a fragment separate from other instances. So lets say an average watcher wants all videos for "how to make oatmeal cookies", it's hard for them to know which instance will have this video. This would get even more complex when you want videos on controversial topics.
I like what PeerTube is doing with decentralization but I think the side effect of that is less discoverability as well as fragmentation. Plus hard to build apps as webtorrent isn't supported on mobile.
The pro for my idea is that because it's a directory, it can run videos even from peertube instances as well as YouTube, Vimeo, Bitchute videos using the embed code. So I am providing a directory for all video content form multiple platform. It just needs to be transparent to the end user who's watching it as they don't care where the video is hosted.
> there is no one place you can go and just watch videos
A global search that spans all public instances was recently implemented, it's mentioned in the OP's link. There's also this third party global search.
There are some ways to moderate content but it is still a work in progress.

They dedicated this whole month on this subject. You can check the roadmap there: https://joinpeertube.org/en_US/roadmap
For sure. It's incredibly confusing. It's a great system with a lot of potential, but yeah, they have to get the experience easier. Same thing with PeerTube, lots of potential, but the federated aspect of it is definitely confusing (I started my own instance with less federation and more curated content to start trying to make things a bit easier).
I'm hoping PeerTube takes off. It's the only current alternative that's completely immune from any of the problems that centralized video platforms like Youtube eventually get.
> No love for PeerTube?
First time I'm hearing of it.
https://joinpeertube.org/en/#instances-list - looks there are a lot of instances for new users to choose from to figure out the best option. Somewhat overwhelming, but I'll check it out.
If the instance you decided to upload your videos to goes down, they don't stay up on other instances right? They're gone forever?
I would recommend looking into PeerTube as a back-up to Youtube, as it's open-source, decentralized & federated, and is based on P2P/WebTorrents.
r/stabbot recently switched to uploading his content to the PeerTube instance https://peervideo.net, which seems to be working well. Considering who you are, they will likely raise your daily upload limit like they did for stabbot if you contact them.
Unfortunately, Peertube simply doesn't have the traffic/reach that Youtube does, but it's still the most viable long-term solution.
Hope that helps. :)
For Framasoft's own instance?
I'd guess so the network stays well federated. In some earlier federated networks like joindiaspora, one pod seen as the "main" one ended up so big the software had to scale just for that one instance.
Peertube is the only realistic alternative that has a chance of taking off. It already works as it is, and was recently successfully crowdfunded to seriously flesh it out.
NON.
https://joinpeertube.org/fr/home/#how-it-works
...et puis, pour parler de vidéos qui disparaissent après avoir "raqué" des vues, il n'y a pas pire que YT ou DM actuellement.
We really need alternative for youtube.
The best one I know of is peertube and even though I think it's great I don't believe in it getting any mainstream attention.
You'll have to publish on two platforms simultaneously, publish on youtube and publish/concentrate on another platform that will be your main one, for example joinpeertube.org
In the videos you'll publish on youtube, add few more seconds in length with some slides explaining that youtubers could reach to you on your new platform (PeerTube for example) and that you're being more active there (which should be true).
edit: people downvoting your thread don't understand that you can't just hide on a new, unknown platform and expect people to free their mind themselves.
Hey, if you do not like where YouTube is going you may be interested in this project by Framasoft a french association: Peertube. It is a p2p video hosting platform on free software, well, they explain it better than I would. It is in beta for the moment but already operational with about 10,000 videos hosted. They are having a crowdfunding for this project final release at the moment. Also, they propose quite a lot of services (always with free software) to replace Google ones (Framapad, Framadate to make polls, Framabin to replace Pastebin and encipher, etc.)
I hope that I did not get too enthusiastic and it will interest some people :-p
use StartPage instead of google.com
instead of youtube use joinpeertube.org
instead of stock android, flash ReplicantOS or LineageOS on it, until the Librem 5 phone comes out.
If you are someone who hosts videos for whatever reason and your income doesnt depend on their viewership (not including webpage embeds) you can host your own PeerTube instance and host your videos there instead.
The appeal of owning your own PeerTube server is similar to that of hosting your own OwnCloud but since PeerTube is a decentralized network you can federate with other PeerTube instances on the internet and see all of their public videos all from the UI of your own server.
