On the lower end: Moto G Power currently on sale for $230. It's a decent phone with a big battery, a headphone jack, and minimal bloat. It's generally for people who don't game at a high level or heavily multitask. The biggest downside is it won't get an OS update past Android 11 and security updates will probably be sporadic. Edit: I should also mention it doesn't have NFC.
On the upper end of things: OnePlus 8 for $700 (glacial green only). Not stock Android but stock fans seem to not mind (or even prefer) OxygenOS. Battery life won't be as good as G Power but it's faster/nicer and has a better updates policy (though no headphone jack).
If you can trade in your iPhone, Galaxy S20+ is close to your budget. Regular S20 is also ok, though battery life is better on the plus model. You probably won't want to wait but a cheaper S20 Fan Edition is expected to launch in October with the S20+ battery.
Galaxy S10+ or S10 Lite are less expensive, still high-end and should last at least 3 years if you have no interest in 5G.
You can also get a OnePlus 5T on amazon for $440 with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage. Flagship of its time, great specs all around, headphone jack, and still only about 10 months old. It’s very well reviewed, sold by OnePlus, and generally a great phone still.
Amazon international unlocked OnePlus 5T: https://www.amazon.com/OnePlus-5T-A5010-64GB-International/dp/B0787NNSK9
Seriously, I’ve heard this phone will offer everything you need and more for an excellent price (and $60 the original at that, which was already extremely well priced). The experience with this phones is very well rated.
This was just put on preorder. Could be a good option. Motorola Edge for $499
Sorry for the affiliate link. Copied it from a website.
You should get the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5
Much better specs (SoC, battery, wifi ac etc) than all 3, for a similar price. It's dual sim, 4/64 too.
For people who don't follow specs, it basically means a faster phone, a much longer lasting battery and faster wifi.
Check that the LTE bands are compatible with your network.
If you want a phone that's similar to the Nexus 5X but cheaper you could try the Nextbit Robin ($170 on Amazon). It has almost the same specs but with 1 extra GB of RAM. The 5X's 2GB RAM was a problem for some people so the extra gig should help. The camera on the Robin is not as good though, and the battery life is about the same (average but not fantastic for either phone). UI is mostly stock except for some tweaks, and it has an unlockable bootloader and dev community if you are into that.
If you want a bigger upgrade, I would probably go with the OnePlus 3T. It's a little out of your budget at $440, but it has high end specs and will be more future proof.
I would go for the OnePlus 7 pro. The G8X is lacking in several categories, notably screen resolution, storage (UFS 2.1), charging speed, and camera. Here's a full rundown. https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=9689&idPhone2=9844

Android One is like the Nexus program in that the manufacturer only creates the hardware, and Google manages the software side. The manufacturer can't introduce anything malicious without Google reviewing it first.
Moto g5 plus sounds like it would be great for you. Amazon sells them at a discounted price with Amazon ads on the lock screen, although over at /r/motog they have stickied a how to for removing them (apparently it's pretty easy). There are two different models, one is 64 gigs of storage plus 4 gigs of RAM for $239.99, or the 32 gigs of storage plus 2 gigs of RAM for $184.99. I decided to go for the extra storage and RAM myself, I figure that spending a little bit of extra money now will save me from having to upgrade for longer.
Here's a link to the phone:
Here's the link for how to remove the ads:
https://www.reddit.com/r/MotoG/comments/6e1cc4/moto_g_amazon_edition_remove_app_that_displays/
Hope this helps and good luck with your search!
Make it into a seedbox (obviously for seeding Ubuntu distros and Big Buck Bunny videos.....) with a torrent client such as tTorrent. tTorrent has the added bonus of having a web interface so you can remotely add files to it (I do this on my Nexus Player).
Or, if you're feeling masochistic like I was before tTorrent introduced the web interface use optware for Android and install transmission daemon. More here
Going to clarify u/DrFatz's comment: wasn't suggesting that you use the Verizon Moto E4 on your Verizon account.
The Verizon Moto E4 is default locked to Verizon (CDMA). There's a workaround to be able to use it on AT&T and T-Mobile, i.e. GSM carriers. People are buying the phone, taking the Verizon SIM card out of the phone before even powering it on, and spending $2 on an eBay unlock code.
$40 Moto E4 thread contains a wiki that describes the process.
Have you looked at the Nokia 7 Plus?https://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_7_plus-9058.php
Its LCD, but battery life has been extremely solid for me so far, nice camera, android one, large display, pretty quick as well considering it has a Snapdragon 660. Available in the UK for £350 so in euros that comes out at €399 which is a bit out of your budget. If you're willing to stretch to that price then I'd recommend it.
That or if you really want new I'd pick up a 32 GB Amazon Moto G4 for $179 and save a little bit of money just in case you get an urge to buy something else.
Moto G (4th Generation) - Black - 32 GB - Unlocked - Prime Exclusive - with Lockscreen Offers & Ads https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GINVN1W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_YBY5xbBVJ5YV1
The Moto G4 Play version is smaller than the regular G at 5" instead of 5.5". Slightly worse processor and camera but still has 16GB storage and 2GB RAM plus SD card and close to stock Android. Solid budget phone.
Nextbit Robin is also a good choice, as FGCHENG mentioned. $170 on Amazon and higher end specs than the Moto G4. 5.2" screen, so it's a little bigger, but UI is close to stock. Their main differentiating feature is their cloud storage integration, but you don't need to use it. Also has extra features like fingerprint reader and NFC (which may or may not be useful to her but are something to consider).
From the list you've put together, I would actually suggest the Moto G5plus, for the fact it's really good bang for your buck especially if you get the "amazon ads" version. What that means is that you have amazon ads on your lock screen, which can actually be removed if you get a lock screen app. It costs less (sometimes less than half) of the other phones you've listed - to get a 4GB/64GB version you'd pay $300 for standard, $240 for amazon ads version. My reasoning behind this is that, in two years when you'll want to replace it, there'll be a whole host of <$300 phones with all the features you list (and more), and you'll be able to buy them and have a newer phone with a newer CPU which will be better configured for the time, and still have paid overall less than if you bought a Samsung Galaxy S8 in the first place.
https://www.amazon.com/Moto-Plus-5th-Generation-Lockscreen/dp/B01N6NTIRH
One thing, you DO need amazon prime, but as a student its deff worth it. $50 for a year (with which you'd still be saving $10 on the overall cost of the phone), but you get all the other stuff (1-2 day shipping depending on where you are, amazon prime video, amazon music, etc). For <$5 a month that's pretty good.
Also! If you're leaning towards T-mobile, you might want to check out mintSim (https://www.mintsim.com/plans/). I moved from Tmobile to them and am pretty happy with their service. They use T-mobile towers (so same coverage as Tmobile), but you pay for your service upfront which saves you a bunch of cash. Currently got a deal for paying 3 months upfront, getting unlimited talk and text on all plans with either 2GB ($11.67/mo) 5GB ($16.67/mo) or 10GB ($20/mo) of data per month.
If money isn't an issue just look at this years flagships:
Then watch a few video reviews and see what a few people say to get a rounded opinion. Also check out recent and similar threads on this subreddit, chances are there's someone who posted a 'I want the best android phone' post.
Generally snapchat is poor on Android because they haven't made the app actually use the camera, it just takes a screenshot of the camera preview and hence is low quality.
Other than that you'll find the decent flagships compete quite well with iPhone 8/X.
Things to look out for are Snapdragon 835/845 (newest processors), 6/8GB ram is probably essential, IP68 waterproofing is available on most phones, some still have headphone jacks thankfully, and Android 8.1 or newer is preferred for the latest security updates.
Android P will come out soon also on many flagships, so might be worth thinking ahead and seeing if any of your shortlisted phones are scheduled an update.
If you can post any more preferences, or why you're switching then maybe someone can recommend a more specific model. If you are familiar with most of the tech jargon, GSM compare is a great resource to directly compare specs. Actual usability/software features will require a video review as they all implement android differently.
I have a LGV30 and love it, only downside is the lack of updates from LG but they slowly trickle in behind the other manufacturers, and the front camera is a bit meh. Great camera, speed, design, features etc would highly recommend for the price.
I'd buy a used pixel 4a 5g (or new 4a non 5g) for like $350 it's the best quality photos you can take besides the last few iphone models, and your cheapest/probably only <1 year old option at your sub $400 budget
Also xiaomi/poco etc. Chinese phones just don't work in the US don't bother with them they only use like half the bands on only a few carriers and you'll have bad service everywhere outside of town
you can check phone carrier frequencies here: https://www.kimovil.com/en/frequency-checker choose your phone, make sure it's US version, then scroll down to your carrier
you can also compare phone photos here: https://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=4&idPhone1=8720&idPhone2=9896
Can't make any comments about the Nokia 8 as I haven't used one. However, I went with the 7 Plus and absolutely love it. The screen is large with a nice range of colours, battery life is insane, camera really nice, quick to load apps and such. The one thing I will say is that in the UK some units haven't received the 8.1 oreo update and are sitting on a February security update. I have had a couple issues with the phone restarting by itself as well which seem to have gone away now (touch wood). Hoping the Android one program will kick into gear soon and I'll start receiving updates more frequently.
Overall I would say a great phone for the price though, just do some research on the forums about the pros and cons of each. I personally went with the Nokia 7 plus because I knew it was getting updates for at least 2 years, nice large display, and I wanted a change from having the dedicated navigation keys at the bottom of the phone. I do like having my navigation keys as part of the software and getting that higher screen to body ratio. It may be a small thing for some people, but I really wanted a rear fingerprint sensor too and the 7 plus' is nice and snappy. The Nokia 8 does have higher specs though so if that's something that's a must you may want to look more into that one.
https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=9058&idPhone2=8522#
Feel free to message me if you have any specific questions about the 7 plus.
Moto G Power would be fine for your usage. I recommend the 2020 version over the 2021 model, as the 2021 model's specs are equal to or lower than the currently cheaper 2020 version.
A $300 alternative is OnePlus Nord N10 5G, which compared to G Power exchanges some battery life for a quicker processor, more ram, and more storage.
I agree with the Moto suggestion. Motorola phones are mostly stock and are a good choice.
You could also look at the Nextbit Robin. It's a great deal at $170 on Amazon and close to stock. The launcher is a bit different because of their cloud storage feature, but you can turn that off and get Google Now Launcher or Nova or your launcher of choice. Can also unlock the bootloader and root without voiding the warranty if you are interested in that.
The s5 and s6 are phones that are a bit outdated, getting something new is better which better updates will be available, motorola provides good updates for it's phone. A phone with nougat 7 will be a good choice. Used phones am not really a fan of because some people i here complain that sellers doesn't offer them the phone in the condition they issued. You could wait for the new s8 to be released since it is 2 months away. But if you want to look into cheap phones, the Motorola Moto g4 would be the best choice. But it's at 189 if you are a prime user on amazon. Battery life is good camera quality is also good. Micro sd card and 16 gb sotage available.
I'm actually looking to upgrade from the same phone and I've been really looking at the Nokia 6.1 (2018). You can get it on Amazon for less than $300 ($269).
It should have a decent camera and battery life and it has the network bands to work on AT&T and T-Mobile. The Xiaomi A1 that you were considering does not have all of the network bands required to work well on AT&T. Because it also comes with Android One, which is pretty much stock Android, she will also have the same software experience from the Nexus 5X with timely updates. The fingerprint sensor is located on the back which should be familiar to her as well.
The only con that I can think of is that it's slightly bigger than the 5X. I believe the Nexus has a 5" screen wheareas the Nokia has a 5.5" screen on it. With that said the body itself is not that much different in terms of size. They just fit a larger screen in roughly the same body size.
Let me know if she goes ahead and gets it how she likes it. I'm torn between getting this now and waiting for the OPO 6 so I probably won't buy this immediately and would like to hear from someone who has the Nokia.
Edit: I should also say that the Moto X4 from Google's Project Fi is also another good option. Timely updates, decent camera and battery life. You can get it directly from the Project Fi website for $250 if you activate it on their service. You can immediately cancel that service after activation and then bring it over to AT&T with your own sim card and a prepaid/off-contract service. If you do go for the Moto X4 make sure you get it from Google so that it's the Android One version which will be directly updated by them.
The screen on this one is smaller at 5.2" which may be a better fit depending on how much that matters to her.
An issue with pretty much all small phones is that they have lower amounts of storage compared to their bigger counterparts - likely because manufacturers consider them "lower-tier" devices in the price range. 256GB is already a tall order to ask of any phone, and unfortunately it's going to be impossible to find that in a small phone.
I think your best option would be the Sonim XP8, which you can buy directly from AT&T for $699. While it doesn't perfectly fit what you want, you're getting a 5.0" display, a 4900mAh battery paired with a very efficient processor, military-grade build quality (MIL-STD-810G rated with IP69 waterproofing), and 64GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot available. It's not exactly 4.5" and 64GB is a far cry from 256GB, but microSD card expandability might make that more manageable.
A more mainstream option would be the Sony XZ2 Compact, which you can purchase unlocked from Amazon for $499. You're getting a 5.0" 18:9 display with a 2870mAh battery, IP68 waterproofing, a wide selection of cases available, and like the Sonim, 64GB of internal storage with microSD card expandability. You're getting higher-end hardware on all fronts over the Sonim when it comes to stuff like the processor, camera and display for $200 less, but you're losing out on battery (although the XZ2 Compact gets great battery life figures in its own regard, the Sonim is absolutely insane in comparison) and a fair bit of durability, two things that you mentioned were important to you.
Hopefully either of these phones do it for you. Unfortunately I don't believe there's any phone out there that satisfies all of your wants.
If it were for my grandfather I'd keep him with Motorola because he already knew it. I'd try to come up with another $20-30 for him to get a Moto X4.
Moto X (4th Generation) - with Amazon Alexa hands-free – 32 GB - Unlocked – Super Black - Prime Exclusive https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077YNYFPD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_zLr0Cb7R23QEQ
Thanks man,
I don't know if this website's comparator is just completely bugging, but when i compare note 9s vs Redmi note 7, they look like they get the same photos.
It's the same thing for all "on paper" better phones than the Redmi note 7. Heck i even took an Iphone X as a comparison and the difference between both pictures aren't that crazy.
Is this website just bugging or is the difference between high end expensive phones vs a 140€ in terms of camera quality aren't huge?

You might want to give more specifics.
Once you know those, you can also plug them in here: https://www.gsmarena.com/search.php3?
To whittle your choices down to a reasonable selection
I was in a sort of similar situation. Either the S9 or the 3a (non XL). In the end I decided to go for the S9, I'll get it tomorrow.
I absolutely care about the camera a lot, however. You can get a Snapdragon S9 version, which allows you to easily get the APK for the Google camera to get that sorted.
Then hardware wise, it's just better. It got an amazing screen, IP68 rating, expandable storage & a better SOC + RAM (system on chip). Here is a comparison.
I can't talk about the interface just yet, give me a few days. I am coming from stock android as well. Currently on a Nexus 5X that i'll pass over to my mother.
The 3a will get 3 years of software updates from Google tho and it got some pretty neat features in the latest android Q beta. That will come to the phone pretty soon. You can google this and read more about it, it's too much to summarise.
Then the Pocofone is by far the better option hardware wise.
Much better SoC (CPU), better camera and a very large battery. 3 reasons alone to get the Pocofone!
https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=9293&idPhone2=9357
As for the software, yes it's "worse" on paper. However, most games that you'll play don't really care too much which android version you're running.
They're also certainly doing their best with the updates.
It's not perfect, but could be worse.
With increasing usage of technology and so many different apps that you run on your phone, it is hard to get a "time-proof" device in this age. You can take care of your phone by not overcharging it, not letting it get heated too often (no matter what phone you have, it will heat depending on your usage) and don't let the body get damaged.
Nonetheless, I too prefer Android - Android One or stock Android is probably the best one to go with because of updates and almost no bloatware.
Some good options are:
Some honorary mentions: Moto G6 or Moto G5 Plus
Look into these, you can also check other suggestions that you get. No matter how carefully you use your phone, it will start showing some signs after a year, and you will probably have to replace it with another phone after 2-3 years of usage.
Get a phone that you like, measure its specs by your own requirements and make sure you read user opinions and reviews, GSMArena is a good place to check about what other people are experiencing with their phones.
If you happen to be on Verizon and will keep the phone for two years, you can get $300 off the Pixel 2. You'd need to keep it the full 2 years to get the entire discount.
I'd go for the Pocophone, just by comparing them on gsmarena.com I listed some of the key differences here for you.
Pocophone:
V20:
Using a filter search on GSMArena, it looks like a Galaxy J4 or Moto G5 would be potential options, but they're in the low $200s.
Edit: Do you have a Costco membership? I was actually just looking at phones on there today, you can potentially get something really cheap if you factor in the costco cash card you get. For example, you can get a Galaxy A8 for $20 up front + $360 tab (Virgin or Fido). But it comes with a $225 costco gift card, so net price is $155. If you want to stick with your current plan/carrier, just get virgin/fido to unlock it (they must do this for free since a law was passed in Canada late last year). You could just cancel the plan immediately after purchase, and you'll just owe whatever is on the tab (i.e. $360).
GSMArena has a handy phone finder tool: https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?nPriceMin=200&nPriceMax=300&nBatCapacityMin=4000&sOSes=2&sOSversions=2800
I would recommend the Xiaomi Mi Max 3. It's got a 5.5Ah battery, Android 8.1 (instead of just 8.0), a lot of RAM (6GB), a lot of storage (128GB), and the most powerful processor of the bunch. I don't see it on Amazon.it, but it should work fine in Europe.
The Ulefone T2 Pro might also work for you, and it has 8GB of RAM (!!), but it uses a MediaTek processor, which are notoriously weak. It also has a notch.
Here's a list of phones under €200 with a screen size 4.6" or less that came out since 2016.
You're really going to struggle to find something of good quality cheap under 5" since there's not really much of a market. XZ1 Compact is the go too compact but sounds like out of your budget.
Go check out gsmarena. It's a great site that spotlights all the latest phones, and allows you to do side by side spec comparison, like I linked below.
Personally, I'd recommend a Samsung phone. I like Samsungs Touchwiz OS, it has awesome features, and ya, its got some bloat, but a lot of it I find useful, especially their camera features, as well as audio.
https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8161&idPhone2=8712&idPhone3=9109
My G4 completely died yesterday and I have been doing the same research. I have been stuck on weather to get a budget of a old flagship. Nokia 6.1 looked good since it has Android One on it and is cheap. The biggest issues I found was the drop in camera quality is significant and the screen and chipset are worse, plus old flagships have 4 Ram.
Honestly, if you want a phone similar to LG G3 go with LG V20. (that micro sd, radio, removable bat, infrared)
If you want the Android stock experience go with Google Pixel XL Gen 1. (Amoled screen)
And if you want want a guaranteed functional phone without a headache go with Nokia 6.1, since buying a refurbished can be a flip of a coin.
Here is a spec comparison: Link to GSM Arena.
https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?nIntMemMin=64000&chk35mm=selected&chkUSBC=selected
I would opt for Samsung Galaxy S8. IP68 water resistant, wireless charging, micro SD storage, better speakers and screen when compared to OnePlus 6 or any other phone basically.
If Canada's prices are too high I would recommend LG G6, Xiaomi MI A1, Android One enabled Moto X4, or Nokia 6.1 (or the 1st gen Google Pixel XL 128gb version)
Personally I'm looking forward to the new BQ Aquaris X2 phones coming out soon. Afaik they're slightly better than the Nokia 6 (2018) though the regular one comes at a higher cost, too.
Nokia 7 Plus > Moto G6 Plus > Nokia 6
Both Nokia 7 Plus and the Moto G6 Plus have better camera than the Nokia 6. I'm using this to judge(choose lowlight), there is no Moto G6 Plus photo in the comparison so I'm using the previous Moto G5S Plus to compare. For the same reason, we don't know how the G6 Plus's camera compares to the 7 Plus's.
The 7 Plus has a faster cpu and a bigger battery(a lot bigger!) than the G6 Plus.
Also the 7 Plus is made of metal vs the glass back of the of the G6 Plus.
I would get an snapdragon 4xx. The 450 is supposed to be almost as fast as the 625, but then again that's a 2 y/o cpu.
Have you seen the Xperia xa2? It has a smaller size and a snapdragon 630, battery life is very good afaik and it also come with Android Oreo.
Having said that, the Moto G6 should be powerful enough for most tasks and will probably have a better camera. (Previous Moto g5s had a better camera than the newer xa2)
On the mainboard? Odd, but I quit asking why LG does things a while back... :/
As for phones with removable batteries, let me ask the GSMArena oracle...
Here is the result for all phones with:
People are sending you to premium phones with cases.
I popped your requirements into the GSMARENA phone finder here...
The search specs include MILSPEC for your impact needs in addition to your requests above.
Surprisingly, it only came up with the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active
LG-G5 probably is a good choice for you, but you didn't say if you're GSM or CDMA, if that matters.
Here's a list of devices from 2016 (and newer) that match your criteria from GSMArena.
The Only phone with updates for 5 years* are Android Enterprise devices.
If you want a long term support (3+ years*) go with a Google Pixel or Android One devices.
If you want a device to last a while and still be great after years, but not worry about more than 2 years updates, Go with samsung S8/S9/Note9.
Please don't go for the Xiaomi Mi 10 as Xiaomi phones don't support all the network bands in Canada while the OnePlus phones do. I suggest waiting for the Pixel 5 as it will have 90hz refresh rate, great camera, 5g compatibility, solid battery, 3 years of OS updates (oneplus 8 will only get 2 years of OS support, 3 years of security), stock android, but a weaker processor (765g). Alternatively, I'll also wait for the 8T and S20 FE 5G version UNF4Z3D69 recommended.
OnePlus 7 Pro is also a good choice as it fits all your requirements but OnePlus is really vague on how long it will support its devices (oneplus 5t had 3 OS updates from android 7 to android 10) so you may or may not receive that additional year of updates. Can also install customs ROMs as there will be custom ROM support for it.
iPhone 11 will also be available for $549 (in USA) when the iPhone 12 gets released so you may want to take a look at that too.
Don't get the Pocophone. It is incompatible with most service providers in USA. You don't get coverage.
https://www.kimovil.com/en/frequency-checker/US/xiaomi-pocophone-f1
I would've said Pixel 4a, but it's not water resistant. There are water-proof cases available however if you want to go that route.
Galaxy A52 5G might be the best value buy with headphone jack and water resistance. It also has 3 years of OS updates and 4 years of security updates.
>budget of around $200
If you want a new condition phone, Pixel 3/3XL (no headphone jack) or 3a/3aXL (headphone jack but slower) can be found for around $200-250.
If you're ok with refurbished phones, Galaxy S10e is around $230 (also available on Amazon).
Basically you're looking for a cheap Android phone with an OLED display instead of IPS LCD.
A used or refurbished Pixel 2 might fit the bill, plus it's got stereo front-facing speakers that should be good for an alarm. There may be some discoloration when viewed at an angle but there shouldn't be a glowing effect.
Maybe try finding a Sony Xperia Z3. It's slightly bigger than your S3, but has considerably better battery (plus handy battery saving modes for those long days) life and speakers (there are stereo speakers on the front). It's got a decent camera and a SD card slot. Here is one on Amazon selling for $260. It is also waterproof, although doesn't have a ton of other features (I think it has some mini apps, so for example you can float a calculator on top of the web browser and a few other things like that).
The Galaxy S5 isn't a bad option either, however The Xperia Z3 beats it in the speaker and battery life departments, however the S5 probably has the better camera and should be a bit smaller.
Yeah, lol I saw that to. I think my only real hesitation on that is the extremely low res screen...my mother in law has never had a smart phone though, thinking this may be an option. Although, did you see Amazon is having a sale on unlocked phones today? This Alcatel looks like a good deal for 99.99.
If you have amazon prime you could get the Moto G
First, the S7 and HTC are worth about the same amount of money, so the S7 is fosho a better bet than the HTC.
Second, the S7 is genuinely better than the S6 (and HTC 10), with leagues better battery life, but only if you get the Exynos variant. The one you get from US carriers has a Snapdragon, and is barely better. (In fact, it's slower than the S6!)
I'd make an effort to get one. Look at the below Amazon link. https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-S7-Smartphone-International/dp/B01CJSF8IO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1485499389&sr=8-1&keywords=galaxy+s7+international
The Exynos S7 is $500 new-and $410 used-on Amazon. That's Z Play money; there's no comparison if you're buying new. Whether you're buying new or used, the difference in price is $100. You're getting an amazingly better phone for it. It's also available on eBay and Swappa, and one will show up on Craigslist every now and then.
If, for whatever reason, you can't get the Exynos S7, get the Z Play. Read the DXOMark review-the camera's not bad, just a lot worse than what you're used to.
EDIT: To answer your question more directly, I had an S6 and got 3 hours of SOT. I had an Exynos S7 Edge and got 8 hours of SOT. Theoretically, I'd get 6.7 hours of SOT from a regular Exynos S7, which is waaaaay better than the S6. Most importantly, the radio drained the hell out of my S6's battery when I wasn't using it-this wasn't the case with my S7.
Moto G4. Currently on sale at Amazon for 115+6.99 shipping for open box/damaged packing deals. Have ordered many of these phones and never had a problem. Great camera, battery life, fast charge. Best bang for your buck hands down.
you can get a Blu r1 hd for $49 if you are amazon prime user. which is a decent performing phone for that price.
I have absolutely no clue about tracfone, but having a look at their bring-your-own-phone service, this is what they say is requires for any GSM phone:
"In order to connect to the TracFone 4G LTE network, your device must operate on Band II, IV or in certain areas, Band 12. For 3G or other 4G service, your device must operate on Band II (1900 MHz) or IV (1700/2100 MHz). GSM devices that do not support these bands may operate at 2G (EDGE) speeds."
Generally, these days, good phones are getting cheap and cheap phones are getting good. What I mean by that is that you can probably spend on your lower end and get something very decent, especially coming from the phone you have. For general carrier comparability, a solid experience, and reliability, I'd definitely suggest the moto series, specifically the Moto G5plus. You can get it with amazon ads for $185 (2GB RAM & 32GB storage) or $240 (4GB RAM & 64GB Storage) with "amazon ads" if you're on prime, or $230/$300 without.
Perks? Moto's generally get updated sooner than other brands of phone, and it comes with the newest Android OS, Nougat. It has a large 5.5" full HD screen, good for youtube/twitch. Battery on a lot of US versions of phones isn't the best (no idea why), but it has quick charging so can achieve "6 hours of battery in 15 minutes of charging".
I will 100% agree with this. While the Nexus 4 was a great phone in it's time (I had one myself), it's a 5 year old phone and even a new really low budget phone (i.e. the Blu R1 HD that you can get from amazon for $60 w/amazon ads) will outperform it.
I personally have the Nextbit Robin. It has almost the EXACT specs of a nexus 5x, a google nexus phone two generations newer than the Nexus 4 and one that costs just shy of $300 new from ebay, and is better in every single way, while being $15 more expensive than the nexus 4 you're looking at, new. (i.e. $130 from amazon)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01D3Q8EGY/
It has more RAM (3GB vs 2GB), a MUCH better processor, more storage (32GB vs 16GB), bigger and better screen (5.2" 1080p vs 4.7" 720p), not to mention a tonne of newer features which the nexus 4 doesn't have - fingerprint sensor, NFC, USB-C, fast charging. It is near stock android (updated to the latest version, Nougat, last month) and if you don't like it you can download the Nougat launcher to make it look exactly like stock android
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cmnlauncher&hl=en
While I am obviously biased towards my own phone, I'm basically trying to say that most, if not all, new phones in the $100-150 range will outperform an nexus 4. The new moto e4 can be bought for $100 (with amazon ads) or $130 without, has stock android, and I believe would be a much better overall experience - it has fast charging and a fingerprint sensor. Stretch your budget to $200 and you have a whole host of really good phones that will not only outperform the nexus 4, but blow it out of the water (see the moto G5plus)
After looking at a couple options (Moto G5 plus would be good for your budget, Moto Z play is better for battery), I reckon you might want to go with the ZTE Axon 7. Doesn't have the battery you want, but in terms of everything else it's pretty close to the Asus Zenfone 3 zoom and is CDMA compatible.
Here's the comparison (http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8067&idPhone2=8509)
The ZTE Axon 7 has a better processor (Snapdragon 820 vs 625), better screen (1440p vs 1080p [both are 5.5" and AMOLED]), upgradable to Nougat, is 4GB RAM/64GB storage. While it's battery is decent (3250 mAh), it's not really in the same wheelhouse as the Zenfone's 5000 mAh. It does come with quick-charging 3.0, however, so hopefully that might mitigate the sacrifice. Also, it looks pretty sick. It's currently $370 on amazon:

If you really are a casual user, there's a phone that's even lower in price than those that I think would be perfect for you! Go take at look at the Moto E4 Plus (also called Moto E Plus 4th Gen)
Moto E Plus (4th Generation) - 32 GB - Unlocked (AT&T/Sprint/T-Mobile/Verizon) - Iron Gray https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072ZS82JD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_YyKeAbAEH8SBQ
It's got an older Qualcomm 4xx series SOC (which is still great for light users), but where this phone shines is in it's ability to be used on all four major carries. Oh, and also the whopping 5000mAh battery!! Light users have reported 3+ days on a single charge, and I think you'd be smart to have some extra money and get this for $169 (32gb version) or $129 with Amazon lockscreen adds.
If this doesn't intrigue you, id say to go with the g5 plus, or maybe check out the Alcatel Idol 5S (it's a gorgeous phone)
Amazon has a Prime-exclusive version of the LG G6 for $400.
There's also the Moto G5 Plus and the Sony Xperia XA1 in that price range.
$500 is really the sweet spot for phones right now. At that price the OnePlus 5T, Essential PH-1, Moto Z2 Play, and other great phones come into the picture.
How about the Essential Phone? It will work on Verizon, and has a 5.7" screen. It will often sell for just under $400 on Amazon right now. At launch it cost $700 and had a ton of bugs (new phone, new company) but since then they've ironed out virtually all those bugs. Now, it's just a cheap extremely well built phone with a mediocre camera and a very striking design.
For 335€ you can get a honor 10 on amazon,it's a new model from a big brand that will get support for the next 3 years+everything is basically better on it. The zenfone is pretty much done with updates, apart from maybe some security patches,it came out in 2016,wouldn't recommend.
Try the Essential PH-1 phone, there is a good deal on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Essential-Phone-Unlocked-Display-Camera/dp/B074BWGRKH/ref=sr_1_1?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1539124446&sr=1-1&keywords=essential+phone
Stylo 4 on Amazon USD179. supports 5ghz. Really solid phone. This is like cheaper version of galaxy note so it will be even more suitable for your dad with that stylus pen.
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1417866-REG/lg_lmq710ulm_ausabk_stylo_4_32gb_smartphone.html (no tax so this is cheaper in a lot of states)
Nokia 7.1 might be right up your alley.
It is part of android one program meaning it is basically Stock android. It also has hybrid SIM slot. Listed 222 Euros on Amazon Italy Though it is more expensive than A2 by quite a bit

Processor wise 7.1 is slightly inferior to Mi A2 (636 vs 660). Since you like to listen to music, you might want to reconsider A2 since it doesn't have headphone jack unless you have BT headphones.

Hope this helps.
The LG G8 is the best performance you'll get for under $300. You can find one for around $250 on Amazon.
Edit: Here's a link, $259 renewed. Snapdragon 845, 6.1 inch OLED 1440p screen, headphone jack, 128gb storage with a SD card, great cameras. It's definitely the best value at this price.
You can get the pixel 3a for $300 right now on Amazon, best buy, or the Google store. It has solid performance and a great camera, even compared to flagships.
Nova Launcher is the most popular replacement launcher on Android because of how customisable it is. The Pro version often goes on sale for like 50c and I happily paid for it, even though I don't use custom launchers anymore.
With Android Pie, the latest version of Android, you can use a custom DNS that works as a system-wide ad-blocker, for free and without requiring root access.
What do you think of the Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro?
If its worth anything to you, here are all the phones released this year and last year that were MIL-STD-810G compliant. https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?nYearMin=2019&sFreeText=MIL-STD-810G
Avoid Stylo 5. It's almost literally a repackaged Stylo 4, which wasn't all that great to start with.
What price can you get A10e for?
GSMArena has bands listed under network, and it looks like it has 3/5 of the primary T-mobile bands. (has 2, 4, 12, but is missing 66 and 71.)
This means it should work well, but not be any better than any phone sold 3 years ago.
https://www.gsmarena.com/battery-test.php3
One of the best phones for its size, and even more impressive it beats many phones with significantly larger batteries.
You really don't know what you're talking about.
Zenfone 6 has around 2 hours more of battery life while web browsing, while Pixel 3A has 30mins more of battery while playing video. Source: https://www.gsmarena.com/battery-test.php3
Can't speak to the particulars of the UK market, but Pixel 3a (or 3a XL) is a better phone than G7 Plus. The 3a's design may be a couple years out of date, but basically everything else about it is the same or better unless you need expandable storage. Better camera, significantly better processor, oled display, 3 years minimum update support, etc.
Any phone will be fine for that use, according to [GSMArena](https://www.gsmarena.com/battery-test.php3) the OnePlus 6 gets a 76hrs rating.
Because the Pixel 3A has just been announced we don't know about battery life, but I imagine that it's gonna be good given that it's got a smaller processor which will use up less battery.
Your search for "screen size larger than 5.7" + "definite upgrade from the LG V20" + "removable battery" returned 0 results. You may need to broaden your search criteria.
In all seriousness, though, phones do have a hard power off if you hold the power button.
This is what I found for phones with a 5.8" or larger screen, released in 2016 or later, running Android, with a removable battery. There are 8 options, but 6 of them are very low end and would be a serious downgrade.
That leaves the Archos Oxygen 63 and the Wiko View XL.
The Archos Oxygen 63 has a 6.3" screen (only 720p though). It's not released yet, and when it does become available it'll only be in Europe and it won't work with U.S. LTE bands. You'll only be able to use it on 3G.
The Wiko View XL has a 6.0" screen (also 720p). It was released in October 2017 and has the low-end Snapdragon 425, a major downgrade from the V20's SD820. It is also only available in Europe.
LG has several other smartphones with the same 5.7" screen as your V20 with removable batteries, but none of them would be an upgrade for you.
Jack, no notch and flat screen eleminates pretty much every phone (which is quite sad tbh, I would love a phone like that). The LG V35 seems like the best that checks all 3 boxes: https://www.gsmarena.com/lg_v35_thinq-9191.php

Its an older phone, but should be good for a music enthusiasts.
If you could live with a notch or hole punch it opens possibilities like the Galaxy S10e or P30 (non-pro).
And something that has it all, expect for the flat screen is the Note 9.
The 16MP camera captures lovely detail, but focus and exposure aren't always reliable...
This is worth a look:

The Moto X4 is $200 today at Newegg and hits all of your needs. The main weakness is that it has a good camera, but definitely a tier below the Pixel, S9, iPhone X level.

HOLD THE PHONE... sorry pun
Ipod like device that is by Samsung... million times better then iPod
Xiaomi makes under 5% profits on everything, so it's obviously good for this. The Xiaomi Mi a2 and the Xiaomi mi 8 lite would probably be your best bet, but only the mi a2 has android one. Specs comparison.
Look specifically at stuff like sd cards, audio jack slots, and the notch to see if you're okay with these things.
If you look at GSM Arena down where it shows network bands, you'll notice it doesn't have band 2 or 71, both large parts of T-mobile network coverage. As far as the other comment, neither do the Redmi note 5/6.
I looked for the cheapest (none used) phone with a notch and the cheapest I could find is, is the Oppo Realme 2 for about 120$-140$. I cant say, if the phone is good, you need to watch some reviews.
I would advise you to get something used and without a notch with your tight budget, if you want a decent phone.
Use this site. https://www.gsmarena.com/search.php3?
Take a look here https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_a8_(2018)-8886.php for review and feedback from users and buy it if you like it. Not everyone needs a flagship phone. If you can find an S8 for similar price then that would be a better phone.
I wouldn't recommend buying an imported Huawei or Xiaomi phone on Amazon because chances are it won't work properly in the US. Most of Europe and Asia uses different LTE bands than the ones used in North America. So you have to find a phone that is officially sold in the US and has US LTE bands (unless you don't care about LTE, which seems unlikely). Also, if you buy an imported phone, you won't get any warranty. I should mention that some Huawei phones are officially sold in the US, but no Xiaomi phones are.
The best way to search for this criterion is the GSMarena phone finder. Typically I restrict by release year (probably 2018 only, or maybe 2017-2018 if you're willing to buy used) and then throw in one or two other criteria. You can set a minimum width of 76 mm (3 inches) or 78 mm (3.1 inches) and see what comes up. Keep in mind that a wide phone won't necessarily have a wider screen - most modern phones have super narrow bezels on the side, if they have visible side bezels at all, but some are just chunkier and I'm not sure that's what you're looking for.
I'm in the EXACT same boat OP.
The best Android One phones aren't available in the US. The better/more cost effective phones not available in US are making me feel unsure about the purchase.
Its one of those "I'm not happy about this, but it seems to be my best option".
As others have noted... there are so many other better phones at the price. Nokia 7 Plus is more powerful and slightly cheaper; but not available in US. Motorola One Power is better with crazy battery. I believe the 7.1 is basically the American release of the Nokia 6.1 Plus at a jacked up price. Feels bad.
https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?&idPhone1=9354&idPhone2=9178&idPhone3=9058
The Nokia 7.1 has an inflated price to gouge the US market. Its the same specifications as the Nokia 6.1 Plus (~$220), but I don't think the 6.1 Plus phone is available in the US.
https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=9354&idPhone2=9310&idPhone3=9178
The 7 Plus actually has BETTER specs than the 7.1, AND its cheaper. But again, not in US. Wish Nokia was more price competitive in the US market.
Also to answer your specific question, it looks like a main difference is the screen resolution:
1080 x 2280 pixels, 19:9 ratio (~432 ppi density) vs. 720 x 1520 pixels, 19:9 ratio (~287 ppi density)
I see what you mean.
Because it's a much more modern device with decent hardware running Android One, which is a lot faster and arguably better looking than Samsung's bloated UI, for considerably less money. It is likely that you will have a better and more consistent experience with a lower-spec'd Nokia with Android One than with a higher-spec'd Samsung. You will also receive timely security and enhancement updates for at least two years from now and won't have to wait a year to get the next major Android version. Samsung will take a while to update S8 next time and may choose to abandon S7, just like they did with S6 last year. I specifically advise against getting Samsung devices because despite all their promises and efforts, Samsung sucks at updating anything but the current most expensive flagship big time.
Moreover, I think the battery life ratings in the comparison you linked are wrong. Try https://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_7_1-review-1841p3.php
There's a 32GB version with 3 GB of ram (the one i have) and a 64GB version with 4 GB of ram, I'm not sure about the availability in Ireland, i'm in Switzerland myself BUT, there is a handy SD card slot so storage is really no issue unless you install a lot of apps (can't install them on the SD card).
It has literally everything you're looking for, the fingerprint reader is a little low but you can use the back of your finger at the knuckle instead of the tip
Don't listen to the comment below, idk where they heard that from, HMD Global are knocking it out of the park with the new Nokia phone offerings as many reviews will show you. Also the 6.1 is part of the Android One program which means it gets updates relatively quickly and will be supported for a couple years still. If you don't mind a notch i've heard good things about the nokia 6.1 plus also. i recommend you check Gsmarena and their phone finder tool which is really powerful :)
Eliminate the Redmi S2 because it has the smallest battery.
Then, which Redmi Note 5 are you referring to?
If the Redmi Note 5 you're considering has the Snapdragon 636 it's the best by far. The Redmi Note 5 with the Snapdragon 625 is similar to the Mi A2 Lite but the Mi A2 Lite will probably get more updates.
I don't think any of these are downgrades.
On the other hand, supposedly all pre-Christmas [UK] orders (including, I presume, those scheduled to be shipped in weeks) are to be processed this week. This is why I suggested "after Christmas" above.
Who knows if true or false; all we know is that it's a clusterfuck.
Thank you for your detailed reply. Yes, I'm aware the 108 MP number is mostly used for marketing, but it seems it still can produce some great photos.
I agree about the Huawei P30 Pro, it does seem slightly better in every way. Especially in low light photography. However, I'm not sure the differences are worth almost €200 for me.
I'm sceptical of the camera quality of the S10, compared to the Mi Note 10, from comparisons such as this: http://imgbox.com/yfeKnxS7. Zooming in shows some huge differences in details.
I think I've made my decision. The deal on the Mi Note 10 is too good to pass up, I'll be ordering it tomorrow. Thank you for the help!
I didn't look at the details, but you can currently get $300 off of the verizon pixel 2.
Sure! Here's all them besides the Nokia which you can add. Now battery life i get, but I'm just curious why you're so interested in PPI (unless you're doing VR). Usually you can barely tell the difference on a screen the size the size of a smartphone,so as long as its at least 1080p you're all good.
