Playing RoA on linux is actually really easy using wine and everything works perfectly including online modes. I managed to even play a local game with 2 xbox controllers, 1 ps4 controller, and 1 steam controller at the same time. I don't know if gc controllers work as I don't have any adapter.
If anyone is interested in playing RoA in linux you can use PlayonLunux (as mentioned on the other comment), but I prefer the Lutris route as it already has this installer for rivals of aether.
I'm a melee player and I like to check up on Rivals casually here & there and shit like this is great for any game's scene.
However, for melee I've been using Frame Melee for years on Android, and maybe I'm spoiled with the scrubbable animations but I was thrown off looking into a moveset and getting a scrollable list of frame by frame state descriptors.
It looks like there may or may not be more states & elements to consider than Melee's frame data but regardless the visual correlation and animation of the character's hit/hurtbox disjoints seems like a top priority for this type of thing.
I don't know, I might be out of my depth here and missing something fundamental to the context of how this applies to Rivals but those are my initial thoughts.
More than anything though, props to you for creating something of value and handing it out to the masses.
Good work!
We should add one more:
Q: Why isn't there a replay system?
A: According to Dan, "Replays are a highly requested feature. We are looking into the best ways to do it. Right now though, there are a ton of programs you can use such as OBS to record your own matches."
Pretty much anything that can be connected to a computer. The problem though with Wii Remotes is that Windows doesn't have a native driver for those. There might be a workaround through using this driver, but I've never tested it myself.
However if it does work in your Windows system, you might be able to then use it in Rivals by setting "D-Input" as the Input Method in the options. However, if it does not, you can do the following:
Set input back to "X-Input" and map the Wiimote + Nunchuck combo to an Xbox Controller using x360ce. For that to work, you'll need the 32-bit X360ce exe and files at the same place as your Rivals installation.
Tell u/Etalus about how you got your Wiimote + Nunchuck working on Windows, and he'll tell you what to do so that this combo can be natively supported by the future versions of Rivals. This would in the end help the community as well :-)
I hope I have been insightful!
Get computer, mobile bad, control impossible, game good, use controller.
Never mind, game here, app store, download game, use link, good game. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.danfornace.loversofaether
Does your hitbox plug in as an xbox 360 controller? If not, you'll probably have to throw a copy of xbox360ce in your install folder and bind through there.
That said, a hitbox only gives 8-directional move, you really should be playing with an analog stick, the game really necessitates the full 360° of motion.

Guessed that the variable that allows forsburn to spawn a clone would be 1 when there is no clone and 0 when there is a clone. Also assumed that the data type would be a double since ROA likes to use doubles for absolutely everything. Scanned for that and found it. Then I look at the instructions that write/access the value. Theres an instruction that continuously writes a value of 1 when forsburn has no clone, and one that writes a 0 when forsburn has a clone. Then theres another instruction that reads the value every time I press side spec. I disabled the instruction that writes a 0 by replacing it with a NOP (no operation).
First off, next time do a screenshot, it's a lot easier and less annoying to other users. I recommend ShareX. As for your issue, update your Microsoft Visual Libraries. I'm fairly certain there's a 2015 version, so go pick that up off the Microsoft website. If not, the 2013 version should work.
Edit: Here is the 2015 version.
There doesn't seem to be any guidelines I can find, but I did find lists of games that come in packs. There were only two instances I saw where the games were singleplayer and in packs, and they were the only games to break the rule of multiplayer between the copies online. These two game are Drunken Robot Pornography and 1... 2... 3... KICK IT! (Drop That Beat Like an Ugly Baby), both of which are 3-packs. There have been few deals in the past that have had 6-packs, but those seem non-existent now. All other games were multiplayer and would work with each other online with the max player limit equating the biggest group pack or higher (in the case of competitive multiplayer games where it'll be 4v4 or higher it'd only have a 4-pack at most). Sources of where I found these trends are This first list compiled from 2013 and using the search feature on https://steamdb.info/search/ and put in (insert number here)-pack in the packages search.
TL;DR besides some 3-packs and seemingly non-existent 6 packs for games that didn't have 6-player co-op or 6v6, all other packs had online multiplayer that allowed for the amount of players on separate PCs that correlated with the pack number in one session or match.
If you're on a decently recent AMD machine you can take advantage of their Video Encoding Engine (VCE, basically the equivalent of Nvidia's Shadowplay) by using a VCE fork of OBS here: https://obsproject.com/forum/threads/obs-branch-with-amd-vce-support.13996/
It's generally much less resource intensive than the normal program
Do you already have an adapter? If so, yeah, use it. You'll have to set it up using x360ce and if you have the official Nintendo adapter you'll have to install the drivers to use it (http://m4sv.com/page/wii-u-gcn-usb-driver). There's a guide on how to set up a GC controller on the front page, so you can use that to help set up your controls.
Hey! I don't know if this would help or not, but I just started streaming yesterday and I just streamed myself for an hour and a half just playing online matches if you want to check that out and see how I and some others play, and get a feel for some habits that go on in the game: https://www.twitch.tv/renzo017/v/53834542. I usually play Orcane or Forsburn but I do play some Zetterburn.
This. Many top players in Smash watch their replays to figure out how to improve their games. To do the same thing in Rivals, just download a screen recorder (like OBS Studio, which is free!) and hit record just before the start a match. Once you're done, just hit the stop record button, and there you go. A video of you against whoever you went up against.
Trying to find an elegant workaround for Air Armada's blue box issue = x_x
For use with u/jam1garner's modding tool.
So, somewhere along the editing process the modding tool starting glitching out with the top portion of the background, so the moon and stars at the top of the screen kind of... wiggle? I undid all of my changes that I did after it was working fine before, and it wouldn't fix the issue, so, I couldn't really get around it. Otherwise it works well enough. Anybody notice the bonus easter egg detail added to this one?
If I make any more stage mods after this one, I'm going to start using u/jam1garner's C++ tool.

EDIT: D'OH forgot the downlink link: click
It'll work similarly to Nuclear Throne Together mods where you make a folder with a bunch of files in it, the game detects those and assembles a character for you. Check the AMA thread for more details.
In rivals, every 1 pixel is actually 4 pixels in a square. In your sprite editor you'll need to find a way to scale up your sprites x2. I use aseprite which has a rescaling tool
Oooooor you could put this into the xSpit browser and have an automagically transparent background :D

I use OBS as well, very easy to use. It saves recordings as .flv files, but if you use the first option here, you can convert to mp4 very easily and cut the clips in Windows Movie Maker for gfycat.
I personally play with one of these: https://www.amazon.com/PowerA-Enhanced-Wired-Controller-Xbox-x/dp/B08F44DPJW/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=3UXXJ7PXD4FSN&keywords=powera+xbox+one+controller&qid=1643750525&sprefix=powerA%2Caps%2C122&sr=8-3
Not sure if it's the best but it was pretty cheap and has worked well for me. I find the digital triggers on the Xbox controllers to be a lot easier on my hands and I kept having issues getting the GCCs to work on steam.
IDK Where you live at but this is a good controller that will be in good condition. https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Controller-Super-Smash-Bros-switch/dp/B07HC2F97Q/ref=sr_1_7?crid=2VJR4C22IFXZE&keywords=game+controller+smash+4&qid=1643500315&sprefix=gamecontroller+smash+4%2Caps%2C60&sr=8-7
I've been using it for the last year. No problems whatso ever and its an official oem controller
Lenovo computer: 430 USD https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-IdeaPad-Dual-Core-Processor-Fingerprint/dp/B09LXCYD4Y/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=lenovo+laptop&qid=1639670448&sr=8-3
Does a couple more things than play video games, too.
Download and use this program. I had the same problem and this fixed it perfectly. http://www.razerzone.com/cortex
EDIT: For context..This is an fps booster program. My computer is complete trash and can barely run 40 frames..Even though I do not lag while playing it, but if I play online..anyone who I play against will be lagging since you are not at 60 frames. Have not had any problems since and was able to play with my friends
I use a PS4 controller without any wrapper software or anything and I even get appropriate button prompts... Something is wrong on your end. Does it work with other games? Does steam recognize it? (Steam now comes in with built in support for the PS4 controller the same way it supports the steam controller)
If nothing works, try downloading DS4Windows which translates your DS4 into emulated xbox controller input
Do you have the controller name that the application showed as well? Going to need that.
edit: That's bad news if the right stick doesn't show a response for the x-axis. That means it's unsupportable or Nintendo has it set up with some axis that doesn't exist in dinput.
With that in light I'd recommend giving http://www.x360ce.com/ a shot. This converts it to an xinput device and might work.
If you're still interested, here are the download links: http://www.x360ce.com/Files/x360ce.zip http://www.x360ce.com/Files/x360ce_x64.zip Though the website is down the download links seem to work for me.
ATM, it's just Xbox. I think PS4 might have it, but I don't think anyone's tried it. Dan mentioned native Gamecube support in the future.
You can pretty much use any controller, just use x360ce to set it up.
> What scripting language will you use and is it similar to others we've seen before (Lua)
Scripting will use GML (Game Maker's coding language)
> How intuitive will it be? Rivals is known for having some rather technical moves so how much time and difficulty would be nessecary to code moves like the bamboo shoot for Guada?
It depends on your coding skill. It took me about a week to create all of Guadua's code, but I've also been doing this for years. Using Guadua as an example will make things go a lot smoother, since I tried to make his code as all-encompassing as I could
> How will sprite animations work?
Basically, there is a "Sprites" folder where you just put every sprite related to the character. When making sprites, you can export them as a gif and then use a website like this one (with the "Stack Horizontally" option selected) to convert it to a png sprite strip.
Play around with it, use google & youtube to the extreme, and don't forget to set the framerate of each clip (or else the sound desyncs).
Or you could just find a more premium solution elsewhere as /u/ShippouS suggested, but I think that might take a similar amount of effort to learn.
Try using a custom font and overlay it over a combo you like, people know it's a combo video from the start simply by the title of it.
if you were using windows movie maker, try a free program such as shotcut. It's more powerful than windows movie maker, has a better UI, and you can do more with it such as include HTML and insert your own fonts. it takes a while to learn but once you get the hang of it you'll be able to make even better videos.
If you're willing to splurge on a wired xbox one controller, they're great for Rivals, as well as having native Win10 support. No drivers, no setup, just plug and play. It's what I use for my PC games and it takes a bit to recognize the A/B X/Y swap but in the end, Rivals' controls are changeable and it's just a layout. I use this one that can be found for even less on eBay
I’ve been using this Xbox 1 controller for close to a month and honestly, I’d recommend it. Though peeps have their own opinions about off brand controllers
There are usb GCC, but they are very unreliable because it's not an official Nintendo controller. The best thing for you to do is buy a nintendo GCC and a mayflash adapter.
Links
GCC: https://www.amazon.com/Super-Smash-GameCube-Controller-Wii-U/dp/B00L3LQ4B4
Edit: You might be able to get a controller cheaper than that, I spent $30 on mine about 2 years ago.
If you're coming from smash like I did you could buy an adapter for your game cube controller
I start it before, then load the game. Try both modes of input if you can't get it working. I personally use a Mayflash adapter, so I have a dedicated PC Mode on the adapter. I'd suggest using that if you can't get it working at all. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RSXRLUE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Kk1ezb9M8PVCC
I don't know how to fix your specific problem but I can recommend the keyboard I use, as I know it works perfectly. (https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Gaming-Mechanical-Keyboard-Backlit/dp/B01ER4B8B4/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1474311426&sr=1-4&keywords=k70)
Hi! Use a 3rd party GC adapter( http://www.amazon.com/Gamecube-Controller-Adapter-Wii-U-Nintendo/dp/B00TVEXFG2/ref=sr_1_33?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1465110395&sr=1-33&keywords=gamecube+adapter ) and used Zadig to get it to run for dolphin. JoyStick data: 0 detected is the only response I get off the controller detecting application.
Surprised no one else has requested this but basically is not detected at all by rivals or your app so......ya..hope u can help me out :3
Although Xbox controllers are certainly 'plug-and-play' (as you might expect, since Microsoft owns both Xbox and Windows), if you get the Mayflash 4-port Gamecube adapter, Gamecube controllers will also require no setup. The official Wii U adapter also works, but I think you have to install some drivers first (which is still really easy).
The random moments might be because the Xbox One wire thing is often pretty loose (i used to have that issue with another game).
We'll try to get it sorted. One option in the meantime might be picking up one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Adapter-Windows-one/dp/B00ZB7W4QU/
I use a ps3 controller, but I use this wireless adapter by Mayflash. I have 0 issues, and installing the driver is as easy as it can be. The big plus is that the adapter can be physically switched between Xinput and Dinput, and the Dinput mode itself has support for up to 4 ps3 controllers simultaneously. Of course, RoA only supports Xinput for now. Definitely worth.
is the "adapter" an actual adapter or a charging cable along the lines of this? http://www.amazon.com/Charging-Microsoft-Xbox-360-Wireless-Controller/dp/B003LJJTOK
because the chargers are not usb adapters and won't work.
You'll probably have to resort to using an xbox controller, yes, or you can maybe try something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0089O4EB0/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_2l7awbAMCDJVD
There's no guarantee it'll work, and you might need to follow this guide http://bigfriendlygames.net/2015/09/19/rivals-of-aether-on-steam/ except with your hori battle pad.
My apologies. I appreciate all the help the help you're giving me and to the others :3 I'm using the OneSoul one. My friend has the same one and his is working. http://www.amazon.com/Gamecube-Controller-Adapter-Warranty-Wii-U/dp/B00V082FGI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1443052722&sr=8-2&keywords=onesoul
