Haha, this is just so awesome. Stephen King is one of my favourite storytellers and his book 'On Writing' is one of the most perceptive non-academic works on 'why we write' I've ever had the pleasure to read. He knows a good story when he sees one ;)

I might add that he ALSO knows, as a storyteller himself, that you cannot properly judge a story or the true purposes of its narrative technique until you know the outcome and where it's all going!

I'm still not quite sure what to think of TCOL. On the whole, I don't like ALIE or anything related to it. And even if I accept the chips as possible, Praimfaya in every possible world was just an artificial, forced plot device without any realistic base.

You're right about TCOL's role in the show. I agree with you. But when I look at the execution, I have some strong doubts. Nobody in the world of The 100 would have been able to spot a city like downtown Vancouver as a positive dream. The Skycru people might have known such a place from some old vids, but for Grounders it would simply have been a strange, cold world - no place for either group to find attractive. The city in S3 had nothing human and was in no way recognizable as the place Jaha had raved about in S2. I think if you wanted to introduce such a virtual refuge into The 100s' world, a rural idyll or something in that line would have been far more convincing.

Above all, however, the break in the narrative thread in S3 disturbs me. After Jason got rid of Lexa much too hastily, it seems as if he hastily grabbed some possible new arc without thinking too much about it. ALIE always seemed to me like a very weak substitute for Lexa: a supposedly strong female figure in a partly dubious, antagonistic role, but at the same time recognizably as far away as possible from the original Lexa.

No, I think TCOL shows the basic problem of the show: Jason is bubbling over with crazy, good ideas, but someone is missing to translate them all into an organic, logical and well paced plot.

No definitely all of that. I think there's about 3 or 4 different chess sets placed in S3 too, actually there's been chess sets in all the seasons I believe.

Early in the S3 speculation game we were talking about possible motives for Alie having something to do with the Red Queen Hypothesis, which is about survival and evolution.

There's a very strong underlying theme of AIW and TTLG, I think. With the two queens, and the idea that Clarke crosses the board and goes from a pawn to a queen when she reaches the other side. Yeah it's definitely all there.

Also I know we briefly spoke about this before, but the 97yrs and the gradual explanations for everything linking back to various technologies and the constant visual of the chess board/pieces throughout the seasons just bugs me to no end. I want to believe its leading towards something big and isn't just a coincidence.

I wish I had time to watch all the seasons over and list all the times chess references are made or seen. They always seem to be linked to Jaha somehow too, besides the chess set in the bunker when Murphy is locked up there.

So the easiest way that I do it is to use my phone as I don’t have a PC anymore. I have an app called CyberGhost it’s all touches of a button and choosing US as my server, the open the CW app and boom! US free streaming. I believe I had to create a fake American apple account - I can’t remember now. Takes about 15 minutes to get everything sorted - depends how bad you want to watch it. For me I really wanted to watch the Flash& The 100 hah!

Zenmate for me is incredibly slow and doesnt let me watch streams, hola unfortunately shares your internet connection with other users. I mean Ill purchase the blurays as soon as they come out (as I usually do whenever I torrent) but yeah its just difficult to support something that doesn't have a legal option for your country even if it is great.

This is actually sort of the basis of a movie called "Circle". It's on Netflix and worth a watch to see how people from wildly different backgrounds and personalities try to solve that sort of problem when the stakes are highest.

It's questions like this, where there is no clear solution, that I really love The 100. No easy way out. People die. There are consequences. How they handle those consequences and assign responsibility keeps this show a fascinating watch.

I think I've put forward a whole series of factual, well-founded arguments. If you can't come up with anything better than a personal attack in response, that alone is proof that there's not much to your position.

Came here to say this. It's strange but us Canadians got each episode like a day after they aired on Netflix. All you need to do is download a free VPN and you can watch Canadian Netflix. I use CyberGhost it's free and seems to work well.

There's an online dictionary. There's even a separate language called Slaksleng which are words that fans add to fill out the language a bit more. They're called Slakkru, and you can see their words in the Slakkru dictionary.

David Peterson (the guy who created the language) approves of these words and he has even used some of their words for new episodes in the show. In 7x06, when a guy is talking to Indra about the stolen guns, David said that Slakkru helped him to come up with the word for "locker". And there's more words in previous seasons too.

David said that out of all his languages that he's created (Game of Thrones Defiance, etc), Trig has the biggest community of people learning and speaking the language.

Here's a dictionary. There's a canon dictionary - official words from the show. And then there's non-canon. Slakgedasleng is words added by the fans and even the creator of the language has approved of them.

You can also learn Trig on Memrise. David Peterson said out of all his languages (including Game of Thrones), Trig is the easiest and has the biggest fanbase learning it.

Jasper didn't "decide to die" and certainly not because of Maya. He had been started to recover from her death already in the second half of Season 3. He simply accepted Praimfaya as an inevitable fate. That's maybe fatalistic, but nothing else.

And as for the situation in the bunker: When I look at our real world today and how some people react to the lock down, Octavia deserves the greatest respect for holding people together in this far worse situation. I don't think it's a problem for Eligius IV, they were travelling for 75 out of 125 years IIRC - even if Sanctum is 40 light years away from Earth (so ~50% of the speed of light), this would only result in a few years of time dilation, which isn't too problematic for the timeline. Maybe Sanctum is closer or farther away, I don't think there's any info.

Eligius III however... Apparently it took them (less than) 2 years, so... Yeah.

EDIT: So let's say the black hole and Sanctum are only 2 light years away from Earth - this would be the fiction part of science fiction. :P I'm not sure if that'd be possible IRL, probably depends on the mass of the black hole. Maybe Eligius III went at 99% of the speed of light - that would be 10 months for them or 2 years for the Earth. But maybe it was 99.9%, or maybe only 90%. I’d usually just change my DNS on the TV, but for some reason there’s no Canadian IP for TV. So I have to do it on my laptop, then transfer to my Smart TV. I assume there’s a cheaper or free VPN to use.

If you want a free VPN you can use ProtonVPN on iOS. It is free to use for three countries(you have a trial at the beginning with a lot of other countries) and one of them is USA. Free option isn’t as good for security because it doesn’t have a lot of paid features but it can easily change your location.

Track down The Middleman - created by Javier Grillo-Marxuach, based on a comic book he wrote. It's almost the complete opposite of The 100 in tone, but does the same the the early parts of the show did, with taking bits and pieces from the history of Sci-Fi, putting them in a blender and daring the audience to spot all the references. It just does it in the service of comedy instead of drama.

I saw the knife in another thread about a month ago (someone was talking about a Lexa cosplay I think?) and showed you can get it on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Supplies-DM-1076-Damascus-Sgian-Knife/dp/B00K23X7PA, so it could just be a whoopsie coincidence with the prop department for an old looking knife.
