AUA Prof is working on it should be out in 2019 she said, in the meantime this book I have been working through is quite good for Eastern: https://www.amazon.com/Eastern-Armenian-Comprehensive-Self-Study-Language/dp/9939530226
If you're genuinely interested in this stuff, you should read Vartan Grigorian's autobiography, The Road From Home. Being Armenian (the culture) certainly was a critical contributor to his success. His Wikipedia page is a very poor substitute, but it gives you an idea of paths that were taken by that generation of Armenians in the middle east: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vartan_Gregorian
Hundreds of thousands moved to the ASSR in the 40s and 50s, but their experience was not very good, there was a reason people were not flocking to communist countries. So the flow stopped after that.
You have to remember its War and you can not tell the other side what you are doing. My guess people make up stupid stuff and rumours -> he can not correct them without giving up info he can not give now -> he tries to say something so people stfu for some time and hopes we will have good News from previous days soon which are safe to share as they have nothing enemy can use.
Armenian people are very emotional and unfortunately in current she where Word spreads fast we can hurt ourselves with people/politicans yelling defeat at home when the Soldier are fighting and completing their Tasks. They have more guns and more men. Of course we need to be more tactical, create traps and try to bate them so we get favourable situations. It is like chess that you have to make the other side belive they are strong, show that they surprised you so they continue their plan and then surprise them when they realize you knew exactly what they were doing and they played into your hands.
Freedome of press really is not helping us in war when we have hraparak and guys who were jailed for corruption creating internal havoc likely to get power or at least avoid jail sentence they were about to get.
“In Lithuania’s Vilna ghetto, “The Forty Days of Musa Dagh” was the most popular book in circulation, reported librarian Herman Kruk. Jewish resisters attempting to flee the ghetto to join partisan units “passed the book from hand to hand,” according to reports."

The company was founded in 2017 by Davit Baghdasaryan (CEO) and Artavazd Minasyan (President). It's based in both Yerevan and Berkeley. According to Baghdasaryan, the team in Yerevan develops the technology, and the team in Berkeley is focused on business and sales.
On the question of how such a rapidly growing business can keep finding qualified employees in Armenia, Minasyan says this: https://iamyerevan.com/krisp-nice-to-hear-you/ >There are a few solutions to this. Firstly, we should invest in the Armenian education system. For example, we have opened a laboratory within the faculty of Mathematics at Yerevan State University. Besides this, we are also cooperating with Russian-Armenian University, and plan to open the next laboratory within the faculty of Physics. By the way, all the money received from WCIT will be invested in these laboratories. The second option is remote working. We already have six remote employees from different parts of the world including the USA, Serbia, Russia, etc. The third option would be attracting Armenians living abroad. We are in contact with some of the best specialists from Diaspora and we are trying to inspire them to come back and join our team. And last, but not least, we are going to work in other countries to find the manpower we need.

Armenian got newly added to the Mozilla Common Voice project!
I want to draw your attention to Mozilla's effort (the makers of the Firefox web browser) to provide an open dataset for anyone to train machine learning algorithms to understand more languages. You are asked to read predefined sentences and record them. This helps computers to understand more languages. Currently there are 15 minutes of Armenian language recordings. For comparison English and Kinyarwanda already have 2400 hours of recorded audio.
To help you need to register yourself with an email address. Then you can record predefined sentences straight away. (And also listen back to confirm recordings)
I'm not affiliated with the project I just want the dataset to get larger to make it possible build more accessible machine learning algorithms.
If you have any questions, I'm happy to try answer them :)
Also: This is an open source android app made for contributing to this project: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.commonvoice.saverio (Armenian will be supported in this app in the next few days)
That’s the effect of being minorities within empires, relying on trade to spread out far and wide rather than military force. Many Armenian diasporas are a result of Armenian merchant families settling down in strategic locations (from Portugal to Indonesia) and integrating into the local economy.

Strange - I've read all the comments below and no one mentioned Ucraft. I think it's one of the most notable startups - just like Picsart, for example. You can check their website via this link. It's a website builder that is competing with such huge companies like Wix or Squarespace, although it was founded back in 2015.

For anyone who's interested, Carl Sagan edited a book that was basically a transcript of discussions had at the 1971 conference for Communications with Extraterrestrial Intelligence which took place at the Byugaran Observatory. If you check through the reviews you can hardly see any Azerbaijani reviews. I am not denying there are probably some idiots doing this. But using these few people to make a post like this to "prove Azeri hatred towards Armenia" only serves the purpose to escalate the tension and avoid peace.
I know from just checking your reddit history that you don't care for that one bit. Yet I just wanted you to know I hate you. I hate you not because of your ethnicity but because of the lack of humanity in you. Every day, with each post and each reply you actively try to escalate the tension between two neighbouring nations whom should thrive for peace. I like Armenians, I find them close to my own culture and caring people overall. Yet people like you, you are a disgrace to Armenians, actively promoting hatred just like the few Azerbaijanis are in this photo.
I hope that the only victims of the escalating tensions will be Armenians and Azerbaijanis like yourself whom actively breed hatred.

Never said it did. and thinking that's the only reason they killed him is pretty idiotic, considering the killed risked his life to do it.
From the article
"Under an obscure section of Germany’s criminal code, prosecution for insults against organs or representatives of foreign states requires both a notification from the offended party and an authorisation from the government."
Like I said, Merkel didn't do him any favors. He was prosecuted under German law.
>If anyone believes it, he/she must be so naive in politics...
The Bundestag resolution passed first reading in April of 2015. Way before the comedian fiasco. Guess Germans can predict the future now, eh?
> Most if not all Armos here point out that Ataturk was a proto-Nazi since Nazis admired him.
You were the one who mentioned the word Nazi in reference to Ataturk, not me. Also the author of the publication I pointed is Stefan Ihrig who definitely is not an Armenian nor from r/Armenia but from an institute from Jerusalem, Israel.
> Because eagle is a bird with wings can fly, a chicken has wings so it has to fly, right?
But the question is whether they are both birds or not. Even if one can't fly, it is still a bird.
Also:
Also you keep on skipping the main point of the discussion:
1) Ataturk went against the Ottoman Empire to improve peoples lives, and this is ok. But when the Armenians tried to improve their lives, this is not ok. What is the logic behind this reasoning if not that of pure ethnic and/or religious motivation?
2) What is the difference between the killings of Armenians, Greek and Assyrians? The people who killed them were the same bad people? And the motivation?
Also you didn't answer my other post:
> So why do you see it farfetched that a bunch of people living in that house were trying to save themselves and their portion of the house, whether by the help of a neighbour or not, just the same as the other bunch doing exactly the same thing?
Zeros are completely irrelevant and arbitrary.
You look at exchange rates over the past 5, 10, 20 years (against the dollar and euro) to see how strong a currency is. Nothing else.
The pound is worth more than the dollar. It takes 1.22 dollars to buy one today. Is it strong? No. 10 years ago it took 1.55 dollars to buy a pound, and at the beginning of 2017 it took 1.70 dollars to buy one pound.
The dram is stable and fine.

Also a question for you. Whenever I look up Armenian folk music on youtube (music with combinations of oud, duduk, dumbak (traditional drum), and zurna) I see that many many comments are from Serbians who appreciate the music. This is very surprising to me that Serbians even know about Armenian traditionl folk music, but I swear, on 80% of these videos there is someone expressing their love from Serbia.
Do they teach about Armenia there? It's very interesting to me. Do Armenians and Serbians have some connection I'm not aware of? or is it just that we all were dominated and fought against the Ottomans?
I'd say by and far the most influential Armenian throughout history would have to be Flavius Heraclius Augustus. An Eastern Roman Emporer he was instrumental in militarizing the Eastern Empire (he introduced the Theme system), he broke the Persians in a war that had been raging with Rome for over 400 years, and he (barely) managed to contain the Muslims and curtail most of their conquests in Europe.
He's also considered a religious figure on account of him retaking the True Cross from the Persians and returning it to Jersulam.

Appreciate your interest in our people!
Yes, sometimes I think it is there way to send messages, "We have Iron Dome" etc, but if that were really the priority I can think of much less bumbling ways to do it.
But my default assumption for all regimes (Turkish, Armenian, US etc) is that almost everything is for domestic consumption. English could just be a way to show the country is somehow modern and Western.
I looked now http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/trend.az and http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/apa.az (which includes non-English, Alexa does not support stats for just en.trend.az or en.apa.az).
Readership is in Azerbaijan, Russia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and a bit in Germany, US and UK. Only very very little in Turkey, none in Armenia. Compare also to azadliq.org and meydan.tv, ie Azerbaijani but not regime-controlled.
Not clear really, they have money to waste and translation is cheap in these countries, and bureaucracies do not always operate logically.

I took a look, and yes there's definitely weirdness on Google Maps... I checked on a couple different GIS platforms and couldn't find the same things. Here's Bing's map for example:

The European Union fell for Russia's first Hybrid Warfare and it worked so well Russia continues their successful strategy, this book goes into detail of the conflict. There were daily mortar attacks months leading up to the war, very similar to the latest NK conflict.
I read the first chapter or so of Crime of Numbers (whose author was here on reddit in an IAMA) I think on the Amazon preview or somewhere which let you read part of the book, and apart from it being a very novel and interesting take on 19th century Western Armenia, it shows the efforts carried out by western powers, lead by UK, in pushing for rights for Armenians and pressuring the Ottoman Empire on this very issue, with the apparent (you never know with British politics) aim of creating an eventual independent Armenia.
I'll get the book sometime soon and I highly recommend it at least based on the part I read.
My understating is an independent Armenia was the aim of the western powers as Armenia was not only aligned with the west (in its limited capacity under an empire) but also Armenians were the progressives in the region, whereas the rest of the Muslims in the region stuck in the Middle Ages (this is also true for Iran, where it just happens that it was the Armenians who brought democracy to the country with a revolution at the beginning of the century).
Armenians were the advanced society in that region socially and economically and the west was aligned with them and the only way to put a stop to this and a stop to western domination of the region was the Genocide.
The more you dig in the rabbit hole of Armenian history of those times the more you see that what even Armenians know about their own history is a watered down sad version of it (presumably because how it ended. So no one wants/wanteded to remember the good aspects).

Can't hotspot a VPN on Android 11 or 12. If you have Android 10 or lower there's a way for it by way of EveryProxy but it's not for the faint hearted to set up.
The best thing to use if you have a newer phone is a travel router that supports OpenVPN. They are super rare here in Armenia though.

Any civillian airport can be used for military craft and operations, but yes, Ganja's airport was purely a civilian airport. It even lacks an adjoining military hanger and supply warehouse that some civilian airports have to be quickly converted into a military airbase.

Israel’s morals used to be good. I’m reading Shimon Peres’ (8th PM of Israel)“No Tome for Small Dreams…Making of modern Israel.”And there is good quote here…this is when they still didn’t have the land and were ideating:
“There were plenty of disagreements among us, despite our share aspirations. Some of the leaders were Stalinists, people who demanded ideological collectivism in their kibbutzim and saw a Jewish state as a mechanism for greater discipline and order. They wanted to replicate the Soviet system. I, on the other hand, believed that Stalin had perverted the teachings of Marx, that his style of government was anathema to the socialist ideal. Rather than replicate his system of government - or any thy - I believed we needed one that was uniquely our own, one that reflect a national ethos based on the tenets of Jewish morality.”
Now, replicate Jewish with Armenian. We do not want to replicate what worked for Israel because it is their own and was born from their ways and needs!
What we want in our ancient land is a new blossoming of the Armenian spirit, not a replication of neither our old or others’ way of doing things. Let’s learn, take what we need from Israel’s ways, but please never replicate, it will not work for us.
Winter isn't as huge a factor in the south, with the caveat that it diverts people from other fronts which become too cold (the Mrav range, for example) to seriously contest with regular forces. Here's the extended forecast for Shushi, for example https://www.accuweather.com/en/az/ircan/674379/daily-weather-forecast/674379?page=2. I use an american vpn and don't know how to change it to celsius unfortunately. This will be colder from the south but you see it just barely touches freezing and just barely snows until apparently January when it picks up. I think that just possibly it's possible that colder weather will cause fog banks off the Arax but I'm not a meteorologist so I'm not really sure how that phenomenon works.
I wasn't telling about number of registered cases. These numbers are useless. It's always dogshit. I was telling about covid deaths. Armenian stats of covid deaths are ok (were ok at least before September when I was looking, you can check comparing with deaths in previous years). In case of Russia covid death stats are falsified. There are many articles on the subject, for example: https://meduza.io/feature/2021/02/10/teper-pochti-ofitsialno-rossiya-na-pervom-meste-po-chislu-zhertv-koronavirusa-na-dushu-naseleniya-eto-rezultat-deystviy-vlastey-letom-2020-goda Russia is the only country that has such huge discrepancy in registered covid deaths and total number of additional deaths.
It would also be cool to have both Armenians on Duolingo. If I'm not mistaken people can build Duolingo courses themselves. Just found this discussion.
There was a video clip about the app. just half a scroll down..anyway

I support it, because if church gets more power, it becomes corrupt, less trustworthy. Just look at Russia. Because of Russian orthodox church's bill on decriminalization of domestic violence, this crime increased dramatically in Russia. Yet to this day they still oppose this.

entire chapter on Armenians :)
Found a higher res version. It says "Niniveh", which Europeans still perceived as being of the major cities of Asia.
No problem! Also, I forgot one more: clozemaster.com (the one I use).
You guys do know where the term Aryan came from, right? http://www.ancient.eu/Aryan/
Also....the uh...kerkhach. That was a stolen symbol.
Unfortunately Hitler took over that term and it applies to pure blood Germans now. Fun, right?
Also, I know that NextDNS.io works because I've experienced it for myself. Requests aren't even sent to the trackers because my network isn't requesting for those specific sets of code.
You can also use a VPN to anonymize your IP and you can even set up a VPN router.
There are workarounds.
I'll address your points one at a time.
I don't think my understanding of how these things work makes me naive. I think there isn't much privacy nowadays because people aren't aware of it and don't make it a high enough priority. For all it's worth, Apple does have a lot of privacy-friendly features and is adding more in their upcoming OS updates. They also give you the option to opt-out of trackers and analytics.
Apple and Google have two fundamentally different models. While they may log events or crash reports or activity that occurs on your computer, they anonymize the data so there isn't anything personally identifiable.
Very interesting discussion. The speaker has written an interesting book titled The Armenians of Aintab: The Economics of Genocide in an Ottoman Province https://www.amazon.com/Armenians-Aintab-Economics-Genocide-Province/dp/0674247949
To all of you who are saying that this guy did Armenia(ns) more harm than good, and ruined our name, I can tell you that the actions of these terrorists, whether you agree with them or not, most certainly put the long buried (by Turkey and their embassies worldwide) topic of the Armenian Genocide in the headlines of the world for many years, and were critical in creating the conditions for genocide recognition that began to spread around the world. Remember that Armenia did not exist as a country and nobody would believe it could be independent in 1991.
Were there other ways to achieve those same goals? Does the ends justify the means? These are questions each of us, including Hampig, must ask ourselves. But to say that what these guys did was ineffective is only to demonstrate a lack of understanding in the context and history of what happened.
For those who want to learn more about the incredible (in the true meaning of the word - hard to believe) Turkish govt campaign to sweep the Armenian Genocide under the rug, you should read Michael Bobelian's book, Children of Armenia. It documents the Turkish govts efforts starting with blocking MGM from producing the movie 40 days of Musa Dagh way back in the day, to pressuring universities, scholars and governments into removing references, cancelling conferences, and staying silent about the Armenian Genocide.
These trrorists ended the silence. Sure the media started off presenting the history as an "Armenians say" and "Turks say", but over time, with education and constant feedback, they stopped presenting the Turkish government narrative as an equal to what all the respectable scholars had to say.
Because Armenian intelligentsia was quite successful in the Ottoman Empire and stupidly viewed it as their own country. Funny our success if probably part of the reason that the Genocide was carried out in the first place.
Urgor Ungor's book details how the rise of nationalism destroyed the multiethnic fabric of the Empire and ultimately created a modern Turkey built from the stolen wealth of Armenians.

>Muslim Armenians aren't really a thing
Oh yes they are Bok ջան։
This is a fascinating book that discusses their plight.
So it seems that everyone here gave you a history lesson. If you want to figure it out for yourself read "Operation Nemesis". It mainly tells the narrative of parts of the genocide experienced by Soghomon Tehlirian. But it also gets i to the politics of WW1 in Ottoman Turkey during the turn of the century. Itll lead you to other doors and research you can do.
A world famous book about the genocide "40 Days of Musa Dagh". Written by a German author. I have this book but have not been able to bring myself to read it. It gets me angry everytime. So there figure it out for yourself
This thread from the sidebar might be useful as well as the book The Road from Home.
There is a book written by Jürgen Gottschlich named Beihilfe zum Völkermord: Deutschlands Rolle bei der Vernichtung der Armenier https://www.amazon.de/Beihilfe-zum-Völkermord-Deutschlands-Vernichtung/dp/3861538172. I highly recommend reading it to everyone who really wants to understand what happened and why it happened the way it did. The author was even able to gain access to turkish military archives for his research purposes. Germany played a big part in it and I would even go as far to say that we (i am german) smhw used the experiences we made, the tactics, the defamation, the propaganda, the logicstics for what happened during to holocaust
do you think Orhan Pamuk's writings might help you out (he is a turkish author who accepts the Armenian genocide) or this i wish i could help out more i'll do some research on this
He didn't blame Azeris, and he wasn't the one who said "imagine if they stayed there". He just stated how things changed prior to this map, which happened to be a few centuries prior.
I knew what he was referring to as soon as he said it. It was a relatively odd case in history where a minority was uprooted and imported into the heart of an empire in large numbers to profit from their industriousness and knowledge. And wealth they brought. Today they're little know, but the Armenian trade network based in New Julfa (Isfahan) was a mini-rival to the Dutch East Indies Company. You can read about it here: https://www.amazon.com/Indian-Mediterranean-California-History-Library/dp/0520282175/

Your experience might differ though as Russian internet and especially internet here is censored so the issues I'm addressing are different, though I HAVE been ip banned from reddit 5 or 6 times now
This cookbook isn’t just Armenian but incorporates a Mediterranean diet, and is very easy to follow. My favorite because the other ones aren’t easy to follow.

This made me remember the docu i watched:
The History of One Village, Hatchik
I think this documentary summarizes the turbulent history of every place in Armenia.
Or as Nietzsche eloquently stated:
What does not kill me makes me stronger.
IMHO the enemies are forgetting this, it seems that adversity selection for so many centuries has created a fierce breed of warriors.
Armenia Strong!
Third time's the charm?
> How Herzl Sold Out the Armenians: He supported the brutal Ottoman sultan against them, believing this would get the sultan to sell Palestine to the Jews. https://www.haaretz.com/opinion/herzls-sell-out-of-armenians-1.5357026

Welcome to be acquainted with genocide denial. This 'other point of view' is an uninterrupted by ever-evolving century-old genocide denial campaign against Armenians carried out by successive Turkish governments. There are some books on the topic of denial, probably one of the most cited works being the one by Yair Auron: https://www.amazon.com/Banality-Denial-Israel-Armenian-Genocide/dp/076580834X
Best Uber-like app for Yerevan? I used gg when I was over there for a week. No worries about getting ripped off since it was through an app, but I was tipping around 50% with spare coins since I felt guilty paying so little for taxi rides :). I was there in June so I mostly just walked, Yerevan is very walkable.
I have created a new and better app. It is called SafeZone. There is an iOS and Android app. And it is 100% free. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/safezone-private-vault/id1337854480?mt=8

> Seriously, we can't even prove a codified "intent" part of genocide to the UN
Not so. The legal interpretations of the codified genocide law during the past two decades in the ex-Yugoslavia and Rwanda genocides and the resulting case law absolutely make the available evidence on the Armenian case more than enough to prove its genocidal intent.

> 23 - Although the UK has consistently refused to recognise the Armenian massacres as genocide, our public lines explaining why we take this position have evolved over time. For many years we used the line that the historical evidence was not sufficiently unequivocal to persuade us that these events should be categorised as genocide. However, while some historians continue to dispute the scale of the massacres and the level of intent behind them, outside of Turkey there is increasing agreement about the extent of the deaths and suffering experienced by the Armenian community. At the same time, jurisprudence in relation to genocide, and particularly the nature and type of evidence required to prove the relevant intent, has developed significantly in the wake of events in Rwanda and the Balkans in the 1990s.
For starters , https://www.amazon.com/Black-Garden-Armenia-Azerbaijan-Anniversary/dp/0814760325 Black Garden by Thomas De Waal is seen as the book about Karabakh.
Even tho the books tries too much to be "neutral" and make both sides "equally bad" , it still covers the events pretty well. You wont find lies in the book. And it reads easily.
If you don't want to pay , the book is available on all warez/torrent sites but that's up to you.
I know of an app that compares telephone carriers and their plans. I haven't used it myself, so I'm not sure how useful it is. But it's worth a try.
