I've still yet to obtain it so I don't know how much crossover there is but Chuck Cowdery has an entire book on the story of A.H. Hirsch Reserve with a similar title.
The Best Bourbon You'll Never Taste
Having tasted it, that title is wrong.
I just use a sponge, but I agree it’s a bit tight. How about a bottle brush? Plus, they throw in an extra nipple cleaner for good measure. Never know when one of those will come in handy.
amazon has real glencairns, $27 for 6.
there used to be a cheaper bellemain one that was $20 for 6 but those appear to be gone.
The ID of the bottle neck is approximately .925". You want a tapered cork in #10 or #11 size. I'd go with the size 11 or the cork might sit too far in the neck. Here's 10 #11 corks for $10
ETA: Synthetic stoppers are typically only found in lab environments and measure differently. You want a size #5 tapered stopper. Thy come in black and white, rubber or silicone. Take your pick.
Haymarket is my go-to spot. Super chill and they have Pinball / Skee-Ball machines.
Whenever I travel I specifically order an old fashioned just to see what comes back. It’s always something different and I don’t mind that.
I’m from Wisconsin, where an old fashioned is typically served with brandy and the only question is sweet or sour.
When I have guests over I offer to make OFs in two different styles: Wisconsin or Old School.
The Old School is much like yours: sugar cube, bitters, spirit.
Wisconsin style is much the same but topped with Sprite or Squirt and garnished with cherries/orange.
I’m sure you have read this before but if not, I highly recommend:
https://www.amazon.com/Old-Fashioned-Worlds-Classic-Cocktail-Recipes/dp/1607745356/ref=nodl_
The part I loved about this book was that original Old Fashioned was served with a spoon to scoop out the remaining sugar and bitters.
Welp, time to go make myself a drink!
I've been using an app called Distiller (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.distiller.distiller or https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/distiller/id784925833?mt=8) that does something similar. Less of a social aspect so not sure it hits all of the high points for you.
I would like to to recommend a book.
American Whiskey, Bourbon & Rye: A Guide to the Nation's Favorite Spirit
Venture into this one bottle at a time, dog ear the pages you've tired and make notes for what flavor profiles you like and don't.
Also try the distiller app to see the profiles to steer yourself to whiskey's you will likely enjoy.
From what you said you will like vanilla and sweet, there is a lot to choose from!
Have fun, sip slow and enjoy it however you like.
Also worth mentioning that price is not worth paying attention to at this point,. Try the cheap and acknowledge the taste first.
I have these and a single one will keep 2 or 3 refills cold if you drink at a reasonable speed, lasting about an hour total, much better than whiskey stones, which I also have.
These bottles are pretty good to share 2oz samples.

It is a cut crystal glencairn - you can find them on Amazon. I got this as a gift years ago and love it.
I bought this one a month or so ago. So far, so good. Holds 75lbs per shelf. Fits all but the tallest bottles (Eagle Rare, High West, etc.)
Here's a pic of mine for reference.
Happen to have Amazon Prime? If so;
Free with Prime, watched it ages ago, but enjoyed the storytelling.
There's still bottles of Col E.H. Taylor Tornado Survivor at the [Lincoln Park (Chicago) Binny's](https://maps.google.com/maps?daddr=41.913244,+-87.655175+(Binny's+Beverage+Depot,+Chicago+-+Lincoln+Park+IL). Worth it if you can't find it anywhere else. That Binny's is also directly across the stress from the Goose Island brewpub, where you should be able to get some great beers, including (hopefully) some variation of their Bourbon County Stout.
Try making friends with the staff at the Weaverville and Woodfin ABC stores. They often get some pretty interesting stuff that you won't find on the shelves in Asheville stores. They usually keep it in the back though, and call people that have their numbers listed in their little black books. I've gotten Stagg Jr, Willet 3 year, E.H. Taylor Seasoned Wood, and a couple other things this way. It helps if you keep an eye on the NC ABC price list or warehouse stock, and let the stores know of NC codes you're interested in. I use Wachete and Versionista to send me updates on site changes.
Uniqoi TN is only about an hour up the road, and Unicoi Wine & Spirits is a decent store (they respond quickly to questions on Facebook, nice feature). Greenville SC is only an hour down the road, and there's a few stores there worth going to. Green's has things I don't see in NC (but doesn't seem to have a wide selection), and their prices are in line with what I expect. 19 Wine & Spirits has more hard-to-find bottles, but they're at a premium. There are other stores in the area, but those are the only two I've shopped so far.
Hope you enjoy that Woodford SiB. I got one too - it tasted like licking salt off a two-by-four, and I put it in the back of the shelf. I'm hoping some oxygen improves it.....
Good luck!
protip: type up your review in an online editor markdown editor like https://stackedit.io/editor so you can just copy pasta the review when you are ready to post it rather than formatting it after the fact.
I recieved this book several years ago and have made 2 or 3 of the recipes.
Love to add a drop or 2 of bitters on an ice cube before I pour a good bourbon over it. And the recipes make a lot so I make labels and give to friends who drink for Christmas or just for the fun of it. Try it, you'll have fun.
No idea if it works but if you plan to have bottles open for a while, this preservation spray is an inert argon-based gas that reduces oxidation. Same stuff that goes in a Coravin, if you’ve seen those. I’ve got it in a few bottles that I know I’ll drink sparingly over time
It’s a mold.

If he's a bourbon nerd, I would only give him something you know he really likes. Buying an enthusiast a gift is usually dicy. Everyone has their preferences and if you're an enthusiast, you probably have strong opinions.
If he really likes Blanton's he needs this:
https://buffalotracegiftshop.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=7&products_id=36
This looks like a knock off, but basically same thing but cheaper @ Amazon:
I can't remember which exact brand I have, but they are essentially these -- link to Amazon. (2) large trays that hold 8 cubes each.
I also have RO filtered drinking water and they make fairly clear cubes when frozen.
It was a gift, but they are sold on Amazon and the official glencairn site. It is called a cut crystal glencairn. Wonderful glass, great weight, though a little pricey.
Yeah it's a good one. I'll have to give it a go with water instead and see how that tastes.
That sounds amazing!! I do enjoy the mouth feel on this one.
It's a Norlan glass and while they are a bit pricey I like a lot.

Four Roses Ltd. Edition Small Batch 2013 @ 51.6% bottled in 2013 Bottle No. 7717/12468
I opened this awhile back, haven’t felt the desire to return to it. I’ve heard/read that apparently this deteriorates fast once open, perhaps this accounts for why I’m not enjoying it much considering the praise that this release has garnered. I just read in this months edition of WA that Jim Rutledge pegs this and the 2010 Ltd Edition as his favourite whiskies of his career. Truth be told, I’m not much of a bourbon fan, and the subtle variations on the one profile is obviously just not my bag. I bought a bottle, and was given one after the fact. I’ll probably look to give away or sell the 2nd bottle.
Binny's has a decent selection, but it's not the best. There are a couple really tiny liquor stores in Printer's Row that have an amazing selection, but most liquor stores just have the standard shit.
Really interesting... According to genius: > A popular interpretation is that this line refers to a Westchester bar called “The Levee”. However, locals refute this interpretation, stating that no bar ever had that name
If you're limited to browser only apps, stackedit.io was what I was using before moving over to macdown and 1writer. It's essentially the same thing, a WYSIWYG markdown editor that would allow you to copy and paste both raw markdown and transformed rich text.
or you could use an online markdown editor which will let you see the post with formatting then just copy paste that when you are ready to post.
this is the one i use:
it even has WYSIWYG functionality.
Actually found it on Amazon one day.
Its called Snüte, and it’s actually metal. I take them on trips with me. I’ve done side by side of the Snüte vs the Glencairn in one of my previous reviews and found the difference wasn’t too noticeable.

This is a better value and I have one and love it. You can get 4 cubes instead of the one, but make sure you get it before 24 hours or it's a bear to break loose.
Gifting bottles is hard, especially for enthusiasts. Likely anything rare and under $100 that is also readily available locally is already in his collection. I don't even know what to get myself for my upcoming birthday since I either can't find it or it's way too expensive.
Have you considered bourbon accessories? Nice glassware/decanter, a bitters set if he's into Old Fashioneds, ice molds (not stones), etc.
I use these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RY76LGX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
plugged into a smart outlet and they work fantastically with Alexa. I can't imagine a feature that would make me spend 10x as much.
I'm using these and plan to use parafilm to ensure that they stay sealed. They came with a funnel and a white marker for labeling them, which I thought was convenient.
The parafilm is probably overkill, but I figure it can't hurt.
Boston Rounds with poly cone caps. You can get them on Amazon
I've made quite a few glasses from High West bottles using this cutter: Amazon. It's a little pricey, but it makes the process fairly easy and repeatable.
Fair enough haha. A lot of the similar quality stuff is closer to $40 imo as well
It's a Norlan glass; I got it on Amazon and while they are a bit pricey I like them a lot. It works well as a rocks glass or a neat glass and the double paned glass insulates the whisky from your hand really well.
It's made by taylor'd. Called milestones. Basically a super sized glencairn. Here's a link to Amazon. I like doing the high proof stuff in it. Let's the alcohol fumes out but keeps the rest in.... Kinda

Here it is: amazon.com/gp/product/B077Y2SJML in case you were interested - I got it for $38 as a gift to myself from my children. The only complaint is the stopper. A bit on a flimsy side.
I have some tiny metal funnels but inevitably it spills a few drops anyway. I should get some of bottle pourer tops to prevent that.

Hi all,
My name's Leo and I'm the head of eCommerce at Frootbat.
I'm really sorry to hear about some of your bad experiences with our company, and I wanted to let you know that last year we were handling things a little bit differently.
We've made some huge improvements to our business over the last 12 months, including changing our customer support team and our approach to order management.
We've drastically improved our handling and packaging to minimize leakage and damage, and we also only ship with reliable, trusted couriers.
While it's not an excuse, we process thousands of orders each day and unfortunately, some of these orders encounter issues during fulfilment, so if you've experienced this in the past - we apologize.
I would urge you to refer to our Trustpilot page if you are considering shopping with us: https://www.trustpilot.com/review/frootbat.com and if you have any feedback please send us an email to [email protected]
Cheers
I just got these.
I like them and the markings in the design indicate a 2 oz pour.
I didn't think about this at all. There are some great options that I think will work really well. I'm thinking something like this with a little festive tissue paper and a bow would work well. Bottles would have to lay on their side but that's not a big deal. Thanks again for the suggestion.
Nice! I love the sherry and port as well, and I think the barrel finish is definitely worth a try.
If you’re interested, Rob Arnold (the distiller) wrote a book about whiskey terroir that’s really good. A lot of science, but a lot of talking to people and tasting good whiskey as well. Definitely recommend.
The Antique here in the UK might be more than £200 since this one on Amazon is for £110 https://www.amazon.co.uk/W-L-Weller-Bourbon-Special-Reserve/dp/B005HQPKRU/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=FVNF6RFZGCF4&keywords=weller+bourbon&qid=1663086462&sprefix=weller%2Caps%2C101&sr=8-3
You can check out the Canadian glencairn glass. I picked up some of these at Costco, I’ve got a couple of the smaller regular ones, And i actually prefer these:
https://www.amazon.ca/Glencairn-Crystal-Canadian-Whisky-Glass/dp/B005LS9B4M
Nuun is a respectable brand and good flavor
I have one before bed pretty much any time I drink any alcohol, which is 2-3 times a week. At 50 cents a pop it's not too bad to avoid a hangover and keep my body happy
A little late to this but you want to eliminate oxygen and sunlight. You can most easily and effectively do this by decanting your opened bottles into smaller amber bottles reducing the headspace and therefore oxygen. Something like these would work perfect. You can augment the bottle seal with parafilm. These also solve the problem of the cork potentially rotting.
Parafilm (https://www.amazon.com/Parafilm-Roll-250-Length-Width/dp/B07C2LKDFJ) is basically a scientific lab variant of standard cling-film or plastic wrap. You don't need to go that far. Follow /u/film_grip_guy 's recommendations. If you feel that any of the caps on the bottles don't seal well, add regular plastic wrap under the cap.
its a long stem tulip glass, sometimes called a dessert wine or vin santo glass, that particular one looks very similar to the Riedel Veritas Spirits Glass
A few of my tips:
-Don't sleep on Starlight. Their Rickhouse Production Tour is the best there is.
-Heaven Hill often allows those that have booked the connoisseur's tasting to buy one of the bottles sampled (I got a Parker's Heritage last time I was there).
-Don't expect to find unicorn bottles to purchase, but pours can be relatively affordable. Target store picks and distillery-only releases (Peerless always has two available) for bottles to bring home.
-Buy yourself a set of inflatable bottle sleeves for the return flight. They pack flat and do a great job protecting the bottles. I usually buy a roll of plastic wrap and gallon zip-locs in Kentucky, and additionally pack in those - wrap in plastic wrap, with particular attention to the top/cork, place wrapped bottle in zip-loc, place that in bottle sleeve.
-Gift shop & distillery grounds visits can be fun even if you can't get a tour/tasting booked.
-The Bar at Willett is my favorite place in Kentucky. A book full of purple tops to try, flawless classic cocktails, and amazing food, all in beautiful surrounds. Book it if you can.
Thanks for the review, I’ll keep an eye out for it. I have the same absinthe and bought a small glass spray bottle for the “rinse” instead of wasting absinthe. It works really well.

There is a 6 tier version, too. Kinda wish I had gotten that one.
All in all well built for the price. I mean, it's the usual MDF shelves. Everything else is metal.
I have been a diehard BS "Purist" for over a decade. Straight/neat was the way to drink it. I've expanded my horizons but almost always have it straight and only dilute scotch when doing a review. However, my wonderful wife bought me Limestone Water and ice ball molds. It is the best way, my humble experience, to enjoy a great whiskey "infinite" ways. Straight at first sip, chilled at next, third the guaiacol comes to the nose and the bouquet opens up, et cetera, et cetera. Honestly, drink it however you best enjoy it. I've just started using a glass dripper to best meter the water as I enjoy the tipple.
You can use an inert gas like argon to help displace oxygen from the bottle. Argon is heavier than oxygen and will settle on top of the liquor. Private Preserve is one such gas: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000DCS18/.
I use it for wine and liquor.
We loved the industrial look and three-shelves-with-rails usability of this one:
Don't remember if we bought it from Amazon or somewhere else but it was on sale, thankfully.
This is what we have. Decently put together and holds a lot more than you would think.
I use a direction freezing tray. It produces crystal clear cubes. There is some timing involved but I do like the results.

Wondered the same recently, I was hoping to do a blind tasting with a coworker and couldn't figure out a safe and secure solution to transport such a small and valuable amount of liquid.

I always recommend Bourbon, Straight. It can be a bit dry sometimes as it goes through the raw dates/history, but it gives you great insight as to how bourbon came to be and dives into the histories of multiple well-known distilleries and families. I’ve ready it a couple of times over now.
The only real option to maintain flavor is to use a silicone stopper. Leave the bottle the way it is now, buy a set of silicone stoppers, use a corkscrew to remove the broken cork, and replace with a silicone stopper.
Do not use a wine cork. A wine cork has already been exposed to ethanol and dried out, even more so if the cork has been sitting around. The higher ethanol content of whisky will cause the cork to disintegrate.
Do not use the cork top pictured. Whisky is full of compounds (ethanol, phenols, lactones, aldehydes, esters, etc.) that impart flavor. Exposure to air oxidizes the whisky compounds and results in oxidation and subsequent off-flavor compounds. The cork provides a seal to keep out air. This is why an unopened bottle of whisky can last years, a bottle over half full can last a year or so, and a bottle with less than half the original volume is good for about six months. As you open the bottle more, more non-whisky space is in the bottle, more air gets in and more air sits with the whisky. This results in off-flavors. Using the top part of the cork will not provide sufficient seal.
A silicone cork will accomplish the only reasonable goal here, which is to avoid oxidation. And it has the added benefit of avoiding potential cork disintegration.

I've used these. Also designed for wine but the padding is an absorbent that will soak up an entire bottle of wine if it breaks. I found a three pack and have reused them several times. They fit both Blanton's and Woodford bottles but I ended up destroying a bag getting the Blanton's out. They've made trips from Japan and France back to the states.
Not clear if this happened in transit, but recommend these to anyone packing in luggage: https://www.amazon.com/Protector-Inflatable-protection-Transportation-Cushioning/dp/B08KJ37FV4/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=bottle+shipper&qid=1644969843&sr=8-3
They are really designed for wine, but I managed to cram Blanton's (700ml) into them and they survived the trip from London with a stop in Iceland.
Being a Weller fan, I can attest to that fact the Poor Man's Pappy recipe yields a phenomenal drinking experience. The two weeks is a minimum with four producing a slightly more refined expression. By the way, if you use 5oz bottles, the math is simple. These bottles are nice since you can create a hermetic seal with a hair dryer:
Nope, no flex. Just ideas on storage.
They don't come with lights. You buy string/tape leds from Amazon.

Are the other bar tenders sellers on the secondary market and you want to be able to confidently converse with them?… Just ask them to invite you to their secondary groups. r/bourbon isn’t really the place for that.
If you are interested in bourbon and want some easily digestible information to start you off, watch Neat on Netflix and maybe look at some books to understand the basics. Unfortunately there’s so much garbage on YouTube it’s hard to sort through it, but if you start at a decent point (not some “influencer” video), the algorithm recommends some good content.
If you want to be a lazy son of a gun like me, try this stuff. i do 3/4oz of the mix with 4.5oz of what ever Bourbon i have for mixing (typically Evan Willams black bottle or Jim Beam) Tastes pretty good for a low effort drink i can make in 30 seconds.

I picked up a pair of these when I read they're used in tasting competitions. They're a bit small and lightweight, but they do seem to give you a better nose with less ethanol. Libbey Bourbon Glasses. Much easier to drink from than a standard glencairn, IMO.
Yellow label gets the job done. For travel I would recommend these glasses.
I’ve used them of work travel, camping, and everything between.
How about a book about bourbon? "Bourbon:The story of Kentucky Whiskey by Clay Risen" just came out and it looks amazing(I just ordered one). It's a beautiful in-depth book about bourbon and comes with some cool goodies! Here is the link:

I had never heard of Stagg, Jr. until recently (I co-host a podcast where a buddy walks me through a new bourbon tasting every episode -- and it was last episode's bourbon). Now I feel like I'm seeing it everywhere!
Looks as though I can share, and if you have a Notion account, I've set it so the page can be duplicated as a template for yourself - otherwise it will be view only. Here is the link to the page, which I'll post above as well.
A lot of people don’t talk about the use of nitrogen or argon gasses, for example this: https://www.amazon.com/Private-Preserve-True-1026/dp/B001AS4NCM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1475974577&sr=8-1 , these gasses are heavier than oxygen and create a blanket over it, giving you much more longevity, and you get a lot of use out of one bottle, and to take it even a step further, you can protect your cork if you think it’s not a tight enough fit with parafilm. (Used to import wine into USA from Spain and learned a ton from everyone over there in Europe). But I’m talking about a really nice scotch or wine or even bourbon that you want to save for a long long time and not worry about it. Just depends on what you are willing to spend to make sure that special bottle stays good for much much longer.
Do you have any other options? Four Roses Single Barrel is on a whole different level than their yellow label. Can you order from Amazon? It looks like you can get Rare Breed This is one of the best bourbons you can buy stateside that is readily available. I'd highly recommend it. It's barrel proof and is a blend of bourbon up to 12 years old.
Fellow Kentucky native here. In fact my family on all sides has been in Kentucky as long as there has been a Kentucky, and much longer than “bourbon” has been a thing.
Bourbon has always been in my life. The first time I had bourbon as an “adult”, I recognized it as a smell I had known for a long as I could remember. as strong and familiar as the smell of a cut lawn or a tobacco barn. I’ve been drinking bourbon well over half my life.
With all those bona fides established, let me say that the first rule of bourbon is this: drink what you enjoy. That’s the real Kentucky bourbon culture. You don’t need to worry about anything else.
For me, I often have bourbon neat, but it’s not the only way I enjoy bourbon. In particular, I enjoy some bourbons with a single high-volume-to-surface-area ice cube. One that you make in a tray like this: https://www.amazon.com/Tovolo-Lasting-Silicone-Fade-Resistant-Charcoal/dp/B00Z8GLGFE/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?.
That’s my sweet spot—the cube cools the bourbon a bit and adds just the right amount of water given the speed I drink.
Your mileage may vary, of course, but the important thing is to find a format that works for you. Best wishes in your bourbon journey. It’s a great trip.
Internet trolls defame brands for fun
Trolling is a wonder that developed with the development of online media. Web trolls are individuals who deliberately start fights and discussion by posting fiery remarks via web based media posts.
More often than not, their goal is to get the consideration of others following the post. Be that as it may, trolling has likewise become a significant issue for brands. Web trolls routinely post counterfeit surveys and negative remarks about brands for the sake of entertainment.

I like the idea! But I'd recommend a combination lock. If you got a Master 175D Amazon Link here you could just write combinations on pieces of paper. It has 10,000 possible combinations, so you won't even come close to people guessing it. Also there are a few other benefits: 1. This eliminates the need to buy extra keys. 2. You don't have to try to collect the keys 3. You can change the combination after each lotto (which prevents someone from making copies of the winning key and mysteriously winning each time!).
I know that box isn't prepped for a padlock, so you could either attach a hasp or get a locksmith to install a CompX EcoForce. Link here. It is a mechanical cam lock that should fit that door.

Probably the best thing you can buy over there is Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof. Here is the Amazon link to get it in the UK. You might need to cut it in the beginning as the proof is higher than most scotch. It shows what's the best in available bourbon IMO. I prefer to drink it neat personally, but it might fry your taste buds if you're not used to 130ish proof. Tastes nothing like regular Jack Daniel's. It's a bit like a caramel covered banana with smokey oak and tobacco notes if I had to sum it up.
>Because that process is used by bad managers to fire people who they don't like, or cover for racist reasons of termination. It's also used to reward people they like regardless of skill. By having everything be out in the open with a clear set of rules that hold managers accountable you help stop those sort of abuses.
Projection - Accusing others of doing something that you would do if you were in their position.
Reflect on that.
>There is also a problem of power dynamics. One employee doesn't mean anything to a company, but your job can literally be a life or death thing if you lose it. Better to err of the side of the person instead of the company.
More projection. I know you've never held a position of power because successful leaders think 180 degrees opposite of what you're saying - see: Servant Leadership. They understand the the employees are their top asset, and that everything else is waste. The company already values you - now value yourself, and go get your money.
I definitely wouldn’t spend $150 on one. I’ve found them on Amazon and Etsy for $35/$85 depending on style.
You can get metal cubes that are filled with some phase-change material - those work a lot better than the stones. I think the ones I have are similar to these: https://www.amazon.com/Whiskey-Stones-Stainless-Steel-Cubes/dp/B0167OP0IO
The key is that they aren't solid stone (or steel); they contain some sort of gel or liquid that freezes when you put them in your freezer, and melts when you put them in your glass, absorbing heat from whatever you're drinking. Not as much as ice does, but enough to be noticeable.
heavily toasted barley tea. no caffeine. this product specifically: https://www.amazon.com/House-Mugicha-Barley-large-bags/dp/B0002BKIRW/ref=sxts_rp_s1_0?cv_ct_cx=barley+tea&dchild=1&keywords=barley+tea&pd_rd_i=B0002BKIRW&pd_rd_r=da696627-1caa-479b-944a-06f3ac95ee85&pd_rd_w=9DSXX&pd_rd_wg=8...
Unconventional, but how about a condiment squirt pump? Screw one of these bad boys into the mouth of your half gallon and then squirt your booze into your glass:
The decanter looks awfully similar to this one, except with a different topper:
