I use the same VPN and setup that you do so I'm pretty sure I can help.

The Private Internet Access client should be in your task bar. You right-click on it and you should get a list of all the servers you can connect to.

Sometimes it start up and just says "Connect." I don't know why it does this. Just exit and start it again and you should have the server list.

But yes, once you click the server you want and if the connection is successful the icon will be dark green if it's connected. You can double check by just goggling "What is my IP?." If you're more concerned with torrents, just google "Check my Torrent IP" and there should be a website where you download a torrent, which doesn't have anything on it. Just leave that running and it's tracker will flash "Your torrent IP is XXXX."

A nice feature of PIA is that there is a VPN kill switch. Meaning that if the you lose your connection to the VPN, it cuts your internet connection all together so your ip doesn't leak. This is ESPECIALLY helpful when seeding torrents.

No, if you're connected to the VPN then you have NOTHING to worry about. Your IP is safe.

While this is kind of pointless now that you have a VPN, go to your preferences and enable encryption. Your VPN encrypts your connection so it's kind of pointless but it's still good to have it checked.

It is important to note that even when using a VPN, the university can still see something is eating up a huge amount of bandwidth. While it is encrypted now, they can't see that it's torrent traffic but they can probably guess what's going on because not many other things eat up bandwidth like torrents. It is important to note that they can NOT see it's you though.

If I were you, I'd limit your download and upload speed and run them at night.

I got the same thing two days ago. Yesterday, I bought the PIA VPN. It's great. But it now costs me $32/year.

You can't really get a good free VPN. Actually, you can't, I saw someone posting about it saying they don't even control logs. But, head over to this thread in /r/VPN

But, in all honesty, paying about $35 - $40 a year is the best way to go VPN-wise. Choose Private Internet Access, money is tight with me, too, seeing as I have literally no income, but if you're torrenting a lot, and you don't want to get copyright infringement notices, the chance of getting your internet shut off, or getting sued, I would highly suggest getting a VPN such as the one mentioned above.

Wherever you download it from just make sure the MD5/SHA-1 hashes match those listed in the MDL page. If the hashes match then you know it is legit.

(you can use something like HashMyFiles if you're not sure how to get a file checksum)

Forget my last question, I went to the xvid website. The codec that it's asking to download looks legit. It's for WMP to play the movies. Unless I'm wrong and someone else can let me know. I don't use WMP.

I left PIA for AirVPN. PIA speeds weren't that great. AirVPN speeds and price are pretty much on par with PIA though, a little faster for a little more money. The selling point was easy TOR integration as well.

Just get a VPN, preferably Private Internet Access. They're cheap, keep no logs, allows torrenting, hundreds of servers, have IPv6 & DNS leak protections, port forwarding, and 256-AES Encryption.

You primarily want a VPN that does not keep logs for bittorrent purposes, especially if you're torrenting with public trackers (Demonoid, TPB, KAT, etc.). No experience w/ Torguard specifically but it looks like they don't keep logs so they seem like they'd be OK.

Check out /r/torrents or /r/vpn for more discussion on this stuff.

To be honest, I think he did give you the best answer. At the sidebar for /r/VPN there is a link to reviews of VPNs.

The only one that gets mentioned all the time is Private Internet Access or PIA, which seems to be good for everyone who uses it.

I don't have any personal experience of buying a VPN by the way, but free ones are not recommended in terms of protecting your privacy.

Usually good torrents will use a .iso file

You can think of a iso file as a virtual dvd

You can burn this virtual dvd onto a real dvd or mount it on a virtual dvd player (on win 8 just double click the iso, on win 7 i use magicdisc

Once the iso is mounted you should be able to find files similar to setup.exe

The last torrent I used that had a setup.exe instead of a iso file force installed lots of crap (toolbars, search engines etc)

Torrents (even movies and stuff) are not illegal to download but the way torrents work, you are also uploading to other users at the same time you are THATS what they get you for... for "sharing".

This site uses direct downloads and doesn't make you share with anyone else. You are simply downloading it.

If you are super paranoid, get ZenMate or DotVPN extensions for Chrome browser and use them when downloading, but I really dont think it's necessary.

Another recommendation for Private Internet Access (PIA). Works seamlessly on my Nexus 7, Galaxy S4, and all my laptops. I think they limit you to maybe 2 logins at a time I don't remember.

And you can always find a coupon code for them or wait for them to lower the price. I paid like $35 for the year.

Not sure on the specifics, but it looks like TorGuard bought CheckMyTorrentIP so it's not really down, it's basically gone now (aside from buying the Torguard service)

I use Torguard and it is amazing, it is really easy to set up with viscosity which is free with a subscription. You can also set up a firewall rule so no torrents will download\upload unless the VPN is connected which is nice to not have to worry about it. I can help you set it up if you have any trouble. :)

EDIT: it is pretty cheap ~$5-10 a month depending on the length you sign up for. It will also allow you to connect on your phone or other devices and they do not keep any logs of anyone.

OK- a lot of people seem to use Private Internet Access. There also exists /r/vpn and /r/vpntorrents.

A seedbox is a slot on a server with a super-duper Internet connection. It is best suited for heavy users because the throughput you buy is massive (e.g. 15 US dollars per month buy 1TB of space and unlimited bandwidth.) there are cheaper budget services- /r/seedboxes.

yes. i don't recall the time frame, but i was able to try both PIA and AirVPN before making a purchase. I purchased PIA and while my demo period was good, a few days after a full purchase I started to notice a considerable lack of speed. i was able to get a full refund and went on to try a few more before settling on AirVPN

Saw your post on Star Wars. I bought the 2011 Blu-Ray and DVD Combo from Amazon. The DVD has the secondary audio track for the visually impaired. My wife enjoyed it greatly. All 6 episodes were described, but only on the DVD disc. I used Handbrake to pull the audio description track, but it is accessible on the Audio Setup menu. Hope this helps.

With e-ink, not OLED.

Even OLED will still cause eye-strain over time. The e-ink (battery last 3 months or so) I found I could read for hours.
Also as it doesn't run games or whatever, more likely to read rather than play a game etc.
