Really really good indy RPG inspired by Earthbound, its fanbase makes it look like a big joke though.
Its my favorite game of the last few years, it did a lot of things i've never seen a video game do. It was surprisingly deep beyond its appearances, having some of the best narrative, writing, and story i've seen in a game, it was just fantastic.
edit: I wonder how Toby Fox (Undertales creator) feels about this, he's said on many occasions that Melee is his favorite video game.
God damnit that makes me angry. If a friend came to me and said they would like to try gaming I would bend over backwards to show them a hobby that has brought me so much joy. We're not all like that.
In other news, if you're willing to try again. One of the most amazing experiences this year has been Undertale. And my only advice is that the less you know before you go in the better.
Hello to anyone who might have come here from the front page! I have one message for you...
<em>Play Undertale.</em> Play it now, before you spoil yourself by reading the subreddit.
This is why I always direct people to the website to purchase indie games! Any storefront is going to have its "storefront advertising" factored into its cut, so I always direct people to...
Genuinely the best game I played all year. I've been playing games my entire life, and Undertale did so many things i've never seen another game do, and it executed it perfectly. Add some of the best writing i've ever seen in a game, a fantastic cast of characters, a very deep plot, fantastic soundtrack, unique gameplay, and the best morality system i've ever seen in a game.
The game isnt for everyone though, and some of its fanbase can be really creepy, and mislead people into thinking the game is something it isn't.
The games only $10, and even if thats too steep, theres an excellent demo available for free to test the waters
Its a huge inspiration to me as an aspiring game developer, seen as majority of the game was made by just one person, I could just feel the amount of love put into this game, an intricate web that could only be made and executed by a single mind.
I love this game, lots of people love this game, maybe you will too.
I don't think it's about needing to play Undertale to understand what people like about it, so much as that the experience is something better experienced without being told those things.
I played the demo years ago when that's all there was, and that alone was an awesome experience. If anyone reading this happens to still be on the fence, please stop here and go play the demo for yourself. Anyone who's already played, is determined not to give the game a chance, or has just been spoiled on everything already by the crazy fans who turned all of the interesting surprises into memes, go on ahead. You may still not like it, but if it resonates with you, it'll be worth it.
By the time you get to the end of the demo, the game comments on what you've done. If you spare the boss but kill other encounters, it asks why you didn't care about them the same way. If you killed the boss, it asks you how you feel about that. If you wind up regretting killing the boss, loading your previous save, and sparing it this time, the game calls you out on it. The game is loaded with little things like this that make the game feel intimate in a way that doesn't come across by watching clips from someone else play.
The gameplay is really simple, and so is the writing, but it feels engaging in a down-to-earth, friendly way that many other games can't because they've been scrubbed into the most clinically crowd-pleasing form possible.
Gameplay wise its nothing inspired, but the writing, characters and soundtrack are great. The writing definitely would appeal to people who like the message of love that is Steven Universe. Also $10 http://undertale.com/
Also goat mom.
I strongly recommend it
Actually novel gameplay, a decision system that feels natural and actually impactful, lovable characters, intricate and genuinely surprising plot, interesting and varied enemies, and perhaps most importantly: Some of the best music ever put to a video game.
If you're feeling tantalized, but don't want to dish out for the game just yet, consider playing The Demo, which is basically just a slightly different version of the first area from the full game.
Disclaimer: I have never released a commercial game. Take these ideas with a grain of salt.
Share your game on /r/playmygame. You have nothing to loose.
Send free copies of your game to Youtube channels that play your kind of game. Include a steam key or download link in your email and keep it short. Don't be surprised or offended if they don't play your game or even respond to your email. The point is to do this is mass and get at least a few people to make videos about your game.
Have a website. Use Search Engine optimisation. Look nice. The LISA website and the Undertale about page are good examples of how you could explain your game on the web.
Get onto Steam if you can. Itch.io and Humble are good but a lot of people will only buy or browse through the steam store.
Create communities on social networks. Create a /r/yourgamenamehere and a twitter page for example. Consider having a dev blog. Don't actually pay money to advertise on social media unless you know what you're doing.
Share your game with Interested communities. If you aren't sure if it's OK to post your game there, ask the moderators.
Reach out to Journalists. If your game does something really cool or noteworthy they'll be interested. Remember that they don't owe you a story and may or may not show your game in a positive light if they do write about it.
Be professional, but more importantly be FUN. Nobody want's to play a boring looking game.
It's an incredibly meta-videogame, so it may not be for everyone.
But if you like stuff like Earthbound, you will feel like home. (Yahtzee also recommended it.)
It's not very challenging, but it's a great ride. The writing is awesome and the game-play is superb.
EDIT: There is a free demo. Try it yourself.
It's an RPG where nobody has to get hurt. You play as a child who's fallen down into the depths of Mt. Ebbott, where the Underground is inhabited by many different monsters. You're trying to get through the Underground and return to the surface. What's unique about it is that there's an actual pacifist mode in the game, rather than "don't fight anything" it's more like "talk your way out of things".
It's honestly really good despite what impression the fanbase may give you. There's a free demo at http://undertale.com/ you should try.
Interesting! I found two unused images in the site:
THE COOL, COOLEST GUY ON THIS WEBSITE, WHO IS ALSO VERY COOL AND POPULAR (THAT'S ME).png
Not much of a secret though
I'm very sad that I've barely seen any discussion about <strong>Undertale</strong>, an astoundingly well-written RPG created by one-man-band Toby Fox. It's highly reminiscent of Earthbound, and manages to stand up alongside the classic unlike many games which have tried and failed, and yet that's not all of what makes it so special. Humor me while I gush about it for a bit.
One of the main features of the game is its "spare" system, which it pulls off in a completely unique way that is so much better than practically any other choice system I've ever seen in a game. This mechanic alone leads to more than a few emotional-wrecking-ball moments that feel organic.
It has memorable characters, an amazing soundtrack, and some of the most masterful tone-shifting since Mother 3. The feels are real. Avoid spoilers at all costs.
I would recommend this game to... everybody who reads this. Yes, you. I'm not kidding. Play the game. Kind of like The Stanley Parable, nobody can quite explain to you why it's so great, because saying any more than what I've said above might spoil the very nature of the game. Trust me when I say that it's definitely something different.
If you're still unconvinced, there's a demo available. It's a tad weaker in humor than the main game (in which there is an abundance), but still represents what makes it great. Play it through to the end of the demo. Then play it again. You'll know what I mean.
Thanks for putting up with me gushing about this game so passionately. I just love it so damn much. It's definitely earned a spot in my top 5 favorite games of all time.
The Steam refund policy is less than two hours of gametime and you can get your money back for any reason. A single playthrough of Undertale is about 6 hours.
My advice would be to buy it, and play until you reach Snowdin Village (that should be about an hour and a half unless you're really slow). If you want to play more and you're enjoying yourself, keep going. If you aren't enjoying yourself and aren't interested in what happens next, then no biggie, the game just isn't for you. Request a refund and all you've lost is 90 minutes of your day.
Also, there's a demo available over at http://undertale.com/ if you don't want to worry about playtime. It doesn't go as far as Snowdin Village, but it's about half an hour long and the first major hook of the game is at the end. I will say the humour picks up after the end of the demo but it's a good taste of what the game is like.
And for people who still need more, the soundtrack includes "Spider Dance," "You Idiot," and "Unnecessary Tension." These are all accurate descriptions of the situations in which they appear.
There's also a demo consisting of the first 45 minutes or so, available at undertale.com. If nothing else has convinced you, at least play the demo.
The thought of getting more people to play Undertale... it...
Well. I'm sure plenty of people know the rest.
combat is just some pretty easy bullet hell or platformer type gameplay. Didnt find it that exciting either but eh.
its a very dividing game though. Either people love it or hate it. Theres a demo available for people who are on the fence.
It's a new RPG made by Toby Fox, the creator of probably the most well known Earthbound hack, the Halloween Hack. He is also one of the composers for Homestuck. The music is REALLY GOOD!
It's definitely Earthbound "inspired", but there are barely any direct references in the game. It captures the spirit of the Mother series though, with quirky and clever humor, fun characters, and memorable boss fights. It's also pretty unique, in that you can go through the game without ever killing a single thing.
If you haven't seen anything of it yet, DEAR GOD PLAY IT, it's so easy to get spoiled, and some of the shit the game pulls is downright brilliant. There's even a demo on the website!
I mean, Undertale. Fairly obvious I guess. Try the demo out.
And yeah, EarthBound is very much Homestuck in its tone. MOTHER 3 is less actually. I have to say that LISA is more 'EarthBound-y' than MOTHER 3 is, the official fucking sequel. But LISA is just one of the many things that EarthBound broadly inspired, and not everything EarthBound inspired is like Homestuck.
It is a pretty cool place!
Also you should consider sending Toby an email about this. Probably zip up your undertale save folder and attach that along with a description of what happened and these two Reddit threads. I'm sure he'd appreciate the bug report. He might already know about it but it's always better to report!
Undertale. It is the best JRPG I've played in years, possibly my game of the decade. Since you're looking for interesting gameplay, this one fits the bill and then some, and as a bonus the story is amazing. I legitimately almost cried at two separate points in the story.
10 dollars on steam, or try the demo which covers up to a crucial plot point, you'll 100% know if you're interested in the game by the time the demo is over.
Yes Undertale! For anyone who isn't aware of this game, it is amazing. You really should get it. Here's the website, including a free demo. The demo's only 30 minutes long, so please check it out.
I think this is one of the all-time greats. Pull the trigger. Or, you know, play the demo first.
You know how Chrono Trigger does that trial thing, where it brings up shit you did HOURS ago, and don't even remember doing, and you were like "woah"? Undertale does this with almost literally everything you do. [Including things you've done in past playthroughs...](/spoiler)
I think it might actually be "98 on Metacritic" rad.
I highly suggest anybody who has even a passing interest in well-written RPGs to check out the game's demo, which gives you a pretty good idea of Undertale's gameplay and themes.
I cannot tear myself away.
Enjoy the game, avoid the "internet culture" around it. Like any fandom it basically takes something good and beats it into the ground and you're better off just enjoying the game and moving on after you're done.
You can get a demo here to get a general idea of what it's like before buying it.
Probably mostly bugfixes. There were issues with some of the achievements not working, and naming yourself [Gaster](/spoiler) on the naming screen threw an error.
Edit: Oh, hey there's patch notes here: http://undertale.com/help/
If you have any love for RPGs, or other indie games that mess with the concept of narrative such as Stanley Parable, you owe it to yourself to at least try Undertale's demo. http://undertale.com/demo.htm
It is maybe 30 minutes long, and while it's only the tutorial it gives you a good idea of what the game plays like, how both its gameplay mechanics and its narrative works, and ends on the first hook. I don't want to get into the story in any real fashion, because would you want any part of your favorite RPG to have been spoiled for you? It's more or less a modern take on an RPG--no grinding unless you want to have a bad time, an involved battle system where you don't just trade hits, and it's real fuckin funny.
If you play the demo and like it, the game is ten bucks. If you play it and don't like it, hey, no big deal it's not for everyone, but I'm really sad that nerds are so wound up about this GameFAQs poll that they're dumping on this game without having tried it or played it.
Don't let the nerd salt keep you from at least trying what I think is one of 2015's best games--a statement I don't say lightly because 2015 has been an incredible year for games in my opinion
EDIT: actually, the best thing I can ask you to do to understand why people like this game is, just read the 3 review quotes on the Steam page. They tell you all you need to know. http://store.steampowered.com/app/391540
Ironic. I had thought about sharing this too, even though it wasn't a big secret. Anyways, here's the picture directory for the site:
The most interesting thing I found was an unused merch button in addition to the pics /u/SirLemons44 posted. The only other directories I could find are /screens and /game which aren't very interesting.
EDIT: Fixed link
There is a demo, though I don't think the review mentioned it. Demos are good things. I suppose I'll give it a try--the screenshots and review content don't much appeal to me, but the enthusiasm is intriguing.
DRM-free version; accepts credit/debit cards, Paypal, and those Visa gift cards that work like a credit card.
Steam version; all of the above, but you can also buy cards for Steam wallet money at places like Gamestop.
A video game. It's an RPG where you don't have to hurt anybody. Instead, you find ways to become friends with everybody and dodge their attacks in bullet hell style minigames.
There's a free demo you should try. It's absolutely something you should experience for yourself instead of watching a playthrough on YouTube or something, makes it so much more impactful
Go and get the demo to check it out! It's a bit different, hard to describe how the mechanics work.
I personally didn't like it enough to keep playing, but it's a charming and original take on the RPG genre. I would never call it the best game of all time, but it's very good at what it does.
Just wait for a Halloween sale, or one of the many other sales it'll be having in the future. If you don't mind picking it up full price though, go right ahead and do that to show your support. You don't have to wait on massive sales on every title to be a patient gamer.
If you haven't yet, you can also play a demo of an older build here to get a good idea of how it plays.
See for yourself! There's a demo that pretty much encapsulates the spirit of the game. Multiple playthroughs are recommended, as the game gets very interestingly meta at times. No one has to die, but you can totally run through like in a traditional RPG where you murder anything that gets in your way, or do something in between.
The gameplay is an odd mix of RPG and bullet hell. It's fairly short, but has a lot of replay value and it definitely feels like your choices actually matter, even on subsequent playthroughs.
I would consider the demo for Undertale as very manipulative (in a great way). Definitely give it a go.
If you're looking for something a little different in messing with you, I have heard Irisu Syndrome is a good pick, but I haven't tried it out.
Sim, no PS4 tá meio absurdo. Mas na Steam tá R$20, vale muito a pena, viu!
Tem a demo gratuita também, se você quiser sentir a pegada do jogo.
I just hate it when people go "am I the only one" since it's almost never the case, but I hear it's just a saying or so, so nevermind about that.
You'll just have to give the thing a shot yourself. I consider it the game I've enjoyed the most in my lifetime personally, but that varies. Some people just dislike it greatly.
Pretty sure it's one of those things where you need to find out yourself. Give demo a try if you wish. AND AVOID SPOILERS LIKE A PLAGUE. (including this subreddit)
Just go to the official site: http://undertale.com/
You can purchase it right there and it includes a check box to treat it as a gift. When you select the gift option you'll be emailed a link to send your friend so they can claim their copy.
Edit: Oh yeah this does include giving them a Steam key they can use should they want to. If they sign into or create a Humble Bundle account they can always keep the download handy and attached to their account for easier redownloading later.
It's honestly difficult to find stuff that mimics the sheer over the top nature of Homestuck, not to mention its medium messing around and experimentation with meta.
Here's the best I can do.
I enjoyed Homestuck a lot in its heyday, and Undertale's definitely my favorite thing I've played in the last few years at least - I've seen a lot of overlap between people who I know were previously into HS and people who are now enjoying UT.
I'm not sure if I'd say its sense of humor is similar, really - Undertale's much kinder (usually), while Homestuck's a webcomic comprised mainly of assholes - but it definitely manages to strike some of the same chords. (And both were inspired to some degree by Earthbound.) Toby Fox did a lot of the music for Homestuck (Descend, Sunsetter/Moonsetter, Savior of the Waking World, Killed by 8r8k Spider, a bunch more), and the soundtrack for Undertale's excellent.
I think my favorite thing about Undertale is its comedic timing - being vague, there's a point where you walk into a room, a small event happens, and then you reach the save point and see the room's name, and it still makes me laugh months after I first saw it.
In general, it's pretty lighthearted, though if you make certain choices it'll become less so (it's pretty obvious what the game and its inhabitants would like for you to do, but you're free to disregard that to whatever degree you'd like). Still, there are moments where I cried. (There's a final leadup towards the end of the game that does the best job of instilling dread in the player that I've ever seen.)
It's the kind of game that sticks with you, I think; it feels very carefully written, so there are so many phrases (big and small) that really resonate. There's a demo here, if you'd like to get a feel for the mechanics - it's the first section of the game, and doesn't hit the same levels of humor the rest does, but it's still a decent litmus test for whether or not you'll enjoy the full game.
It's probably the fanbase, as is with many popular entities. That said, from what I've seen about the work going into Homestuck, it looks big. Like, really big. It's something I wouldn't have the time for but still find pretty interesting. One of Homestuck's contributors, TobyFox, did make a game recently called Undertale, and it seems to be somewhat similar to Homestuck but still very much it's own thing.
If you want to give Toby an extra tip when you buy the game get it directly from the site.
There's a button to "leave a tip" if you're so gracious to pay extra. The website will also give you a Steam key on top of a DRM free copy.
i see your point. things don't usually get popular so quickly, you're right
as for not having interest in starting, there's a demo of the game. if you'd like to try it, here's the link. not trying to force you to play it, just do it if you would like
Howdy! >I've heard that Undertale is similar to pokemon
Well, it's a turn-based RPG with cute monsters in it. That's where the similarities end. >is that all Undertale is set for?
No... I can't quite explain without spoiling anything, plus it's better experienced than explained. Download the demo here to check it out yourself. >How good is Undertale?
Damn good.
Undertale just came out two months ago! Like the sidebar says, it's an indie RPG with definite Earthbound inspiration. It's got an amazing sense of humor, and allows you to be as violent or as non-violent as you would like - either path is completely viable, as are a bunch of in-between ones.
There's a demo on its website, and it's $10 - I would highly recommend looking up as little else about it as possible, because it shines brightest unspoiled.
Make a forum a post on steam.
Send him an email at
according to this page
send him messages in his twitter.
that's what I can think of right now.
Because it is incredible. The battle system is that you can either fight or act your way out of situations. But heck, that's not really the shining point of the game.. The humor is simply comedy-gold and creative!
Best 10 Dollars I ever invested into a game! Seriously, I recommend buying it! If you still don't believe me, you can play the demo version of this game for free.
It comes out September 15th on PC and Mac! This title caught my attention due to its unique bullet-hell combat system - and, of course, a pacifist route is viable.
I highly recommend playing the demo over at the official website.
You play as a child who falls down in the underground. A place filled with Monsters You can talk your way out of battles and spare the monsters or slaughter them. It really doesn't matter. The game has Bullet Hell elements so if you choose not to kill anyone it is still a challenge. It has both action and dialogue, about an equal amount Finally the game costs 9.99$ or £6.99 depending on the country you're from but it could cost more in your currency. I recommend you download the demo from here and see if you like it. If you want to buy it install the gaming platform called Steam and deposit money into the Steam wallet. Then buy the game from the online Steam store and enjoy it. Don't look into anything about the game though, you might get spoiled.

In concerns to spoilers about the combat system, I just want to point out the about page on the official website had that since day 1: http://undertale.com/about.htm
The story overal, not so much. But for people complaining they got the combat system spoiled to them...
There's actually a demo of Undertale. It's not a 1:1 representation of the final game but it's good enough to give you a taste of how the game plays.
I enjoyed Transistor and Undertale both, and self-promoting aside...
Transistor is pretty short, but there's some replay value. I did describe it as an action RPG, but there's a feature where you can stop time and plan your moves to execute lightning-fast and then avoid enemies in real time as it charges up again. Short but sweet. Really liked the cyberpunk/computerpunk? setting and the music was pretty good too.
Undertale is basically "Event Flags: The Game" apart from the story and gameplay and great music and all. The game keeps track of a lot of things behind the scenes, so doing something like killing the first boss, only to reload and redo the fight will actually have the game make note of what you did. The boss fights themselves are pretty memorable because they have their own spin on the combat system.
Well, it's really just the graphics that could be like Megaman. It's not a platformer, but rather an RPG game with an overworld and combat systems.
Actually, that reminds me. There is a playable demo for free on the official website. See if you like it!
The only places you can currently buy Undertale's soundtrack are Steam and Undertale's website, AFAIK. Probably easiest to buy it from the latter and import the files into iTunes.
There's a demo, which helps IMO even if the Ruins aren't the best example of the game's humor. I've had pretty good luck with "here's the demo, if you like it I'll buy you the game," though my friends are admittedly more into RPGs than yours.
What about it do you think they, specifically, would enjoy?
(Definitely encourage them to redo the Toriel fight if they fuck up; Flowey's knowledge of what you've previously done was what sold it for me.)
It's a game that rings truest if you're someone who's familiar to some degree with 90s JRPGs - it takes a lot of cues from them, and plays with expectations set by those other games. (Both plot-wise and metatextually.)
But Undertale's also a game with a lot of heart, and one where the tone can change drastically depending on your choices. It's pretty clever - there are a lot of responses for things you wouldn't expect, or alternate uses for items that wouldn't be worth keeping in any other game - and its characters are written in a way that's believable and sympathetic. You're encouraged to care about them, and for a lot of people it works.
There's a demo here, if you'd like to give it a shot! It's also currently $8 on Steam/the Humble Store.
People are telling you to buy the game and try it but I figured I'd note there's an actually reasonably large demo here that'll give you a general idea of how the game works and bits of the dialogue and isn't on steam For Some Reason.
I love the game immensely and it's maybe one of my all time favorites but it's definitely not for everyone. It's dialogue heavy, if you dislike top down shooters the combat is basically all that, and the writing style, while endearing, definitely isn't universally appealing. The game starts kinda slow too, although it's slow start is still really good and it only starts showing when you replay the game in different routes.
You could get the demo.
Though the game is popular with a pretty obnoxious crowd, it's still very fun and a great experience, if you play through it blind. It's popular for a reason. I also expect it to go on sale with the next steam sale.
The game is great, a quirky earthbound-esque RPG with bullet-hell mechanics to create personality. It's not particularly challenging, but it's one hell of a ride.
I recommend it, a lot of posters here have recommended it, and Yahtzee recomended it. (google "zero punctuation undertale")
EDIT: there is a free demo, you can try it yourself.
UNDERTALE is a must-play then. It's an amazing game with a TON of implicit and explicit choices that affect the story in many ways, and it actually has a fun gameplay as well.
Hmm. I can't say I know. You might want to look around and see if anyone else has had this problem. The troubleshooting page is here, and you can use the email linked on that page if you can't find an answer anywhere.
It's a similar turn-based battle system - like a classic JRPG, or like Pokemon, yeah - but the big changes are that 1) you can spare someone who no longer wants to fight, and 2) you're given a chance to dodge attacks.
It's easily the best game I've played in several years - it's got a ton of content despite being not terribly long to play through, it's fun (and has some anti-frustration features if you die enough times, which are always lovely), all of the characters are wonderfully written and easy to connect with, and the game does some neat stuff with the nature of saving and loading. Also, I cried at least five times.
There's a demo on its website; why not give that a try, and buy it if you like it? It's well worth $10, IMO.
Same question was asked sometime ago apparently; you can buy it off of the official site. Anything beyond that though, no idea.
Also, you can probably transfer your character data over if you find the right file.
A WONDERFUL LITTLE INDIE RPG ABOUT A KID TRAPPED IN AN UNDERGROUND WORLD FULL OF MONSTERS AND SPIDERS AND HOT DOGS. IT PLAYS A LOT LIKE A REGULAR RPG EXCEPT WHEN ENEMIES ATTACK YOU, IT TURNS INTO A SORT OF "BULLET HELL"-STYLE GAME WHERE YOU HAVE TO USE A LITTLE HEART (WHICH IS A REPRESENTATION OF YOUR SOUL) TO DODGE THEIR ATTACKS. IF YOU GET HIT, YOU LOSE HP.
ANOTHER UNIQUE THING ABOUT THE GAME IS THAT YOU CAN PLAY THROUGH THE ENTIRE THING WITHOUT KILLING ANYBODY, BY USING VARIOUS ACTIONS OR DIALOGUE CHOICES TO MAKE THE MONSTER BECOME PEACEFUL AND THEN USING A MOVE CALLED "SPARE". AND IT ACTUALLY TENDS TO BE A MUCH MORE CHALLENGING, INTERESTING, REWARDING EXPERIENCE THAN IF YOU JUST KILL EVERYTHING YOU MEET LIKE YOU WOULD IN MOST GAMES.
ALSO THE STORYLINE IS GOOD AND IT'S HONESTLY A REALLY EMOTIONALLY SIGNIFICANT EXPERIENCE THAT MAY HAVE MADE ME CRY A ~~LITTLE~~ LOT.
I REALLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. YOU CAN WATCH THE TRAILER OR DOWNLOAD A DEMO AT THE GAME'S WEBSITE. OR JUST FLAT-OUT BUY IT IF MY DESCRIPTION INTERESTS YOU, IT'S PRETTY CHEAP, AND A TOTALLY WORTHWHILE EXPERIENCE.
I love it. I can't say enough great things about this game! I've beaten it more than a few times to see and rewatch all the endings. What caught my eye was that almost every battle (couple special exceptions) can be resolved nonviolently, the "enemies" have their own personalities, and every attack has their own unique pattern. I've tried several combinations on what would happen if I killed some monsters, killed no monsters, and killed all monsters, all legitimate ways to play the game.
The music is one of the only game soundtracks I've bought as a separate purchase, the characters are funny and charming, and nearly all the choices and decisions in the games are commented on. I'm still surprised by all small choices I made and that the game actually remembers them.
Small things I liked were that the women in this game actually look like monsters instead of humans with monster features, although they usually have eyelashes too. It was also nice to see 2 gay couples getting together like no big deal. Lastly, you can date a cool skeleton, a fish knight, and a lizard scientist! Such adorable characters :D
There was very little I had problems with this game. I think for me the mechanics of "ACT" and "MERCY" were confusing and not explained all that well in the beginning, whereas "FIGHT" and "ITEMS" is pretty straightforward.
The demo can be found on the creator's website which is what sucked me into buying this: http://undertale.com/demo.htm
The game is called Undertale, an RPG that was on Kickstarter roughly 2 years ago. It only recently came out, here's the link to its website: Link
The character in the picture is called Burgerpants, if you want to look up his dialogue.
Please play Undertale! It's a short, funny, indie RPG (for PC/Mac), with things in it you'd never expect from an RPG. You don't even have to kill monsters, you can choose if you'd rather try to earn their trust or what have you.
It's bonkers charming and funny. Click here for Undertale's About page.

Here's a script to get a Flowey on the bottom-left of the page
document.body.innerHTML += '<div style="position: fixed; left: 0px; bottom: 0px;" class="flowey" id="flowey"></div>'
A stripped down version of the script to change faces:
'Windows': (images/floweywinkBIG.png); 'Mac' : (images/floweyhappyBIG.png); 'Twitter': (images/floweycoolBIG.png); 'Tumblr' : (images/floweycuteBIG.png); 'Store' : (images/floweymoneyeyesBIG.png); 'KS' : (images/floweymoneyeyesBIG2.png); default : (images/floweyBIG.png);
Only the Windows
and Mac
pictures work.
If you want to get the others to work, you need to modify one of the onmouseover()
attributes:
onmouseover="floweySet('Windows')"
=> onmouseover="floweySet('Twitter')"
Also http://undertale.com/images/ works, with some more pictures (and sans/Papyrus
You can add a tip if you are purchasing it through the Humble Widget on the Undertale website. I don't know if there is going to be any indication that you bought it on/for Linux, though.
It's hard to say what would run and wouldn't run if you want something more modern. The Witcher 3 will definitely not run, but Dragon Age Origins might since it's 7 years old now. If you're unsure about Dragon Age: Origins you can get Origin Access for $5 a month and see how DA:O runs on your computer and either play through it or buy the game later if you run out of time and don't want to pay for another month. You can also try out Mass Effect since it's included in there and might be able to run on your laptop.
Some modern low spec games you might enjoy are XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Civ 3 or 4, Undertale (demo here), Shadowrun Returns/Dragonfall/Hong Kong, FTL, Disgaea PC, Xenonauts, Witcher 1, and Torchlight 1 and 2. Not being able to play Portal or Oblivion is pretty rough though, so I'm not sure any of those would run on your laptop since it's so old.
You could also look into different genres like puzzle games, hidden object games, or point and click games since they usually don't require anything that extravagant.
It might be time to think about building a computer for a few hundred if you have the funds.
From the sidebar:
>UPDOG is a computer game about a child who falls out of an airplane onto a cloud where a civilization of dogs has been exiled for generations.
>PET or PLAY your way through battles while dodging magic slobber attacks. Every dog has unique attacks and a unique personality—and they all want to play. You can show them APATHY if you want. But what will you do if you meet a relentless facelicker?
>UPDOG is a game for PC and Mac by indie developer Toby Dog, who is a fox. It won the Audience Award at the 2016 Global Dog Conference. Players will recognize the oddball worldbuilding of Broken Age, the cosmic bullet fetch of Homestuck, and the richness of moral choice in WarioWare.
>Play it, then come back here and enjoy the fandog!
TL;DR: Not much, what's up with you?
Yes, if you are in doubt, download the demo here: http://undertale.com/demo.htm
You could also... ahem... "download from sketchy sources for free" just to test it, if it does run, buy Undertale to support Toby and have fun!
The game is 10 US dollars. You can buy it from http://undertale.com/
Buying it from the official website let's you download a DRM free version of the game. You can play this version without internet access. On top of that, you also get a code for the Steam version of the game that you can redeem on http://store.steampowered.com/ This version of the game requires internet access to install, but has extra features, such as the ability to save your game to the cloud, so you can continue your savefile from another computer and some other Steam specific features. Other than that, it's the same game.
I have to ask - was whoever you were watching talking to NPCs/taking time to read most text? It kind of sounds like they weren't from the way you put it. I wouldn't call Undertale's plot terribly hard to follow (there're parts that are, but nothing you'd have seen that early in, I think), but since it's very text-heavy, it does work much better if you talk to characters at every opportunity/examine things/etc.
There's a demo if you want to give it a shot and see if it was just that (it ends at the end of the Ruins, after facing Toriel), but if you don't want to, that's fine too!
It's actually on sale via Steam right now - just $2 off, but hey, $8's pretty cheap.
There's a free demo if you'd like to see if you're interested. Probably no one here's going to say it's not worth it - it's definitely one of the best games I've played in a long time. (If you've ever loved a 90s/early 00s JRPG, Undertale resonates a little more strongly, but that's definitely not the only thing going for it.)
Integrated graphics card isn't optimal, but I think it'd be okay - the GPU requirement's pretty low. You could give the demo a shot to see if it runs alright?
You might want to not have a lot of other things running at the same time, and you might experience a little slowdown in a couple graphics-heavy battles, but otherwise it should be fine.
If you set up some heavy nginx caching, static sites, as well as offload as much traffic as possible to other servers (CDNs, etc) you can squeeze a surprising amount of power out of a small server.
Something like http://undertale.com/ is no problem, since game downloads go through Humble, the video is through YouTube, etc.
You can get it on Steam or on the game's website via the Humble Store.
Actually, it's 20% off on Steam right now, so it's just eight bucks on there right now.
Zeboyd Games makes great 8-Bit style RPG games and they're 50 cents a piece or less.
Undertale is a turn based RPG with quicktime elements like Paper Mario and South Park. There's a demo available here.
Undertale is a very unique game and even though it has very old-looking graphics its combat system is really fun and unique and the story is one of the best I´ve ever played.
So I would personally recommend this game to everyone but it all comes down to preference even though I highly doubt that the game will bore you.
If you are unsure wether to buy it or not I believe there is a free demo you can download over at the undertale website here http://undertale.com/demo.htm Hope I could help :)
An indie RPG inspired by Earthbound. 10 bucks on Steam. About 7 hours for a run with incentive to do multiple playthroughs (I've done four.) As a general rule, though, the less you know about it the better a game it is. Free demo at http://undertale.com/
The tagline of the game is "The RPG Where No One Has To Die". Granted, it's not what people are used to when they play RPGs. Most people expect fights to end in a death you could honestly care less about. The way it's executed in Undertale, though, it feels that your actions actually have meaning. Even though you're not doing any physical fighting in Pacifist mode, it is still a very engaging experience.
That being said, we're not forcing you to play Pacifist, nor are we expecting you to. Once you pick up the game, I encourage you to play it as you would naturally.
If you're on the fence about buying it, try the demo first at http://undertale.com/demo.htm. It covers the first area of the game and most of the mechanics.
A mix between a JRPG and a bullet hell game with very like-able characters, 3 endings and EVERY single thing you do matters. If you want to play it, just don't get spoiled. It's 10 bucks on Steam, but here's a quick demo if you're interested: http://undertale.com/demo.htm
P.S: The ending is a mindfuck.
Because of the way Undertale uses its interface, you can't really strip out gameplay for a neat 'story-only' experience the way you can a game like TLOU. There's a lot of LPs you could look up, including commentary-free ones, but playing it is absolutely 100% a stronger experience.
Its website has a free demo, as well as a DRM-free (non-Steam) option to buy it. I'd recommend giving the demo a shot, maybe? (FWIW, it's also a game where dying isn't as frustrating as it usually is for me; I died something like 20 times my first playthrough, but none of those deaths made me want to give up or find a different way to tackle the fights.)
Well, I just finished Undertale. So that happened.
I have one thing to say... [](/sp)
[](/loveme) Toby! Hey! Green is not the color of kindness! Yellow, Toby, geez, get your colors straight! [](/sp)
[](/ajhappy) Got mah colour close to correct, though. [](/sp)
[](/twismile) Mine's rather accurate as well. [](/sp)
[](/rdsitting) No complaints from me either. [](/sp)
[](/fluttershy) And... Um... You know... I'm really ok with any color too... Just... please... no more... flowers... [](/sp)
[](/fluttercry) Though... I guess... I guess I could do some gardening... Maybe... maybe I can help with that... [](/sp)
Another thing, a review of sorts:
The game feels like a friend. I don't know how, I don't know why, but, yes.
Also, I ended up playing it twice. Kinda. And I'm very, er, determined to never play it again. This... this is a good thing. In a way I cannot explain without spoilers.
In fact, I can't say much more without spoilers.
I like my new friends.

Seconding Undertale.
I am an unashamed Mother Series fanboy, have been ever since I got Earthbound for my birthday when it first came out... and Pelor preserve me, I might actually like Undertale more.
ETA: Also, it's $10, and on the official site you can get the game and soundtrack bundle for under $20, which is totally awesomely worth it.

Note to Plounge: Do not click this link unless you have already played Undertale. And if you haven't played Undertale, then get off the plounge right now and play it. It's one of the best games I've played in quite a while. I thought I wouldn't like it (I'm not usually one for RPGs) but the story is really touching, the mechanics are fun, and the music is great. Depending on how you play, it can be cute, dark, hilarious, unnerving, heartwarming, depressing, or any combination of the above. You can learn more/get the game here.

I do encourage people to buy the official release and support Toby Fox if they can. It's a great game imo.

*Edit: I do encourage people to buy the official release and support Toby Fox if they can. It's a great game imo.
I personally loved it. Not only was the battle system unique, but the rpg element was ever present in every battle. Sparing every enemy is a challenge and rewarding in the end :) You can always try it here if you aren't sure.
Undertale - Link
The game was just released, so beware of spoilers. It utterly destroyed me though - I've experienced a genuine sense of loss when I finished it and realised I won't be able to have this experience again the way I had it the first time.
I recently finished a really cool little game that came out about a week ago. Since I'm afraid of what may come out of my mouth/keyboard if I continue talking about it much longer, I'll just leave a link here.
Also, I'll be starting to write things again next week, this week has been crazy, and I finally have a decent grasp on what I'll do. I'll talk some more about it then.
So the video player on the SBF website is pretty clunky, but I don't mind it too much.
The thing that keeps me going back to the youtube page is that youtube keeps track of what videos I've watched. I don't usually watch videos on the day they're uploaded, I tend to let some build up. So when I'm going back and I'm like "Ok so was episode 10 of MGSV the last one I watched, or was it 11?" it's really nice to have an easy way to tell. If the website duplicated that functionality, I'd use it a lot more.
(also everyone play Undertale especially the Best Friends look here's a demo)

If you like playing a game based around your concept, might I recommend checking out the demo for UNDERTALE? It features mechanics similar to those you proposed, and while the actual game is not released yet, the creator said a few days ago it is 90% complete.
