This is a shape merge through and through. I'm going to edit this with a tut and a file for you. Just wanted to answer before I got tied up though.
To add to this; all of the cutting and path overlapping is just going to cause headache. Getting all the shapes to look right and have clean edges isn't super easy. The way I show below is simple, fast and more effective than leaving a bunch of dead-end paths in your art.

It's because what your asking is illegal and generally not allowed on any subreddit.
If cash is a real struggle then a real solution would be to seek out open source software.
Here's https://inkscape.org/en/
A free professional vector design tool. If people can do this with inkscape, you can probably do your projects as well.
Looks like the result of a stop/start in the pen tool. When you mess with handles it's tough to get a really smooth line. Here's a brush that I made you that works well.

Well, you're not stuck. Since you can't really discard the "cut away" information, it's just that lilithness didn't know enough to help you. No big deal.
Seems a clipping mask was created in a strange way that even fooled me for a moment.
The whole thing is a repeating swatch and I was able to create any sized shape with the pattern in it.
This Jpeg is sized for a 1080p background. https://www.dropbox.com/s/tjt263tshurwwcy/esclizardsbkg.jpg
This AI file is the vector copy that I made. You'll have to use it to scale the background repeat if you'd like it changed. Unless that doesn't make sense to you; in which case, tell me if you want the lizards bigger or smaller and I'll help. https://www.dropbox.com/s/x5xvrphj57meny5/esclizardsbkg.ai
ok, here's how to do it. this took all of 10 mins to do so it's REALLY simple. Here's a link to the .ai file so you can follow along with the steps. http://www.filedropper.com/fontwork
Hope this helps.
No. No one's going to help you steal software here. Either spend the money on it (It's like $20 a month for just Illustrator) Or use a free vector illustration program like Inkscape.
The standard format for vector graphics is SVG. Using an SVG image, you can resize it however you like and it will retain crisp and blur-free qualities. However, Microsoft Word doesn't support the SVG format (as far as I know).
Therefore, you can use a program like Inkscape to convert the SVG file to EMF, which is supported by Microsoft Word. I've never tried it, so I can't attest as to whether it retains vector characteristics or not.
Alternatively, you can simply resize it however you like within illustrator until it's the size you need, and save it (using "export as") as a jpg or png image, which can be easily inserted into Microsoft Word. Note that if you scale the image after insertion, since the image has been rasterised and is no longer a vector, you will suffer a loss in quality.
To conclude, resizing images in Microsoft Word is not recommended, and should be avoided if possible. Resize the vector first, then save it and simply insert it into Microsoft Word as a final image.
Sometimes I find stacking gradients to be easier for more simple things, but it can be difficult getting good curves and certain shapes with just overlapping gradients. Meshing takes a really long time (if you want realism), and can be hard and sometimes frustrating, but when you know a few good techniques it gets a lot easier. I think even now I've learned a lot more and could remake this in a more clean and realistic way.
Here's the file, but keep it to yourself, or if you post it anywhere else, at least give me credit or let me know ;)

I have A Smile in the Mind sitting next to my copy of Logo Design Love. Among the other butt-loads of design (self-help) books I've got, The Perfect Bait is a nice little gem.
Thanks! Let me know if this works. If not, if you'd like to provide me with your email I can send it to you directly.
Thanks!

Well that sucks. You didn't mention it above, so I thought I'd ask.
That style kind of has a Creative Market vibe. Maybe browse their Display Fonts section for a hit.
I did a while art project like this, and had the same problem with space between shapes. My project
My solution? Copy all the shapes of similar color to a new layer. Merge to make one shape, move the anchors close to the edge in just a little. Drop it behind the other shapes.
Worked great for me, I linked to my project above.
