Not sure where you're getting "clear by Friday" from:
https://weather.com/weather/5day/l/32202:4:US
Weather Channel is calling for winds of 40 to 60 mph and 3 to 5 inches of rain on Friday. NHC gives Jacksonville a 52 percent chance of experiencing TS-force winds, a 17 percent chance of experiencing 50-knot winds, and a 6 percent chance of experiencing hurricane-force winds within the next 5 days. You can probably increase those probabilities at the beach.
Keep in mind that us older redditors are not necessarily like your average 50 year old. If your dad is more traditional he may not necessarily enjoy himself. Either way you should help him look through meetup.com. There are a number of groups that he may find common interest with.
Most of the time Jacksonville in October experiences daily high temperatures in the 70's and 80's. It can get lower on occasion but that's not typical.

There is a place on Blanding called Underground Alley. They host LAN parties and the like pretty much every week. Here is their Facebook page for more information.
This might be what you're looking for. It does have a entrance fee, but it's all night and it's only $10 if you bring your own computer.
This is a 360 degree photo stitch, so at least two fisheye lenses. I used to do this with an attachment for my Essential Phone. It looks to me like it's either taken from Friendship Fountain or from above the river just past it (maybe with a drone since you can't see a boat). You could probably tell if the top wasn't cropped so closely.
Well, if you're unsatisfied with Kia's reliability, according to Consumer Reports, you're also going to want to stay away from the even worse brands, like Mazda, BMW, Honda, Subaru, Nissan, Chevrolet, Porsche, and especially Ford, because they all ranked less than Kia.
What do you mean by a tech scene? There's a decent IT industry and a pretty good network of professional groups, etc. It pays well enough, but not as well as bigger areas. Though when you consider the lower overall cost of living along with no income taxes, you can live pretty comfortably. Tech On Tap, OWASP, Florida IT Server Group and the various groups on meetup.com should get you going in the right direction. The Tech Coast Conference is coming up in August. Tickets are pricey, but if you can figure out a way to get reimbursed, it might be worth checking out.

I bought this, threw it in a sprayer with a gallon of water per packet, and it nuked only the purple nut sedge in my yard. It takes about 2-3 weeks to work, and didn't harm my grass or ornamentals.
Yes it's expensive, but I just tried it a few months ago and it did pretty well. Other herbicides haven't worked for me.
Sorry if this sounds like an infomercial.
(not a shill) I have Comcast gigabit internet and I consistently get real close to that benchmark. If you own your own modem or router, it is possible that that is the problem. When I first got it, I found my router was preventing the higher speeds. Also, if your modem does not support DOCCIS 3.1, you will not get the speeds either. It is also possible that you live in a bad cable run area like an apartment complex.
Cumberland Island, St. Augustine.
There may also be a rocket launch at the Kennedy Space Complex around that time, those are always cool to watch.
Another fun thing to do is go on a Sunset Flight in a plane. Good deal on Groupon Right now. https://www.groupon.com/deals/a-cent-aviation-1-3.
> Hazard lights can actually reduce visibility making other drivers think you are stopped or stalled. They make it difficult to see if motorists ahead are tapping on the brakes and they don’t allow you to use your turn signals.
> “A motorist behind you might mistake it for a turn signal or assume that you are tapping on your brakes. They are called hazard lights because they signal a hazard – that your car has broken down, or you have been in an accident,” Durkin said.
Where did you read that? The most current numbers I've been able to find has ps4 at 4.2 million units sold through and xb1 at 3 million.
WeatherSpark is a good resource to get an idea about the climate and how it compares.
Humidity is bad starting about now until about August. It rains a lot during that period. Winters are mild. As in maybe a light jacket. The period between those “seasons” is idyllic.
Jax has it’s problems. But, would not live in any other major Florida city.
Hurricanes are not as frequent here (knock knock) as say Miami. We’re usually protected by the Gulf Stream from the East or the storm weakens over land from the west/south. We saw bad flooding in Irma. Mostly in low lying areas.
I'll join in with the T-Mobile praise. Their coverage has gotten better in the past couple years, the difference is really noticeable. Cheapest prices (of the big 4) and best coverage/speed, you can't really beat it. A few years ago, I agree, they were horrible. But as time went on, the coverage I noticed on I-10 between here and Tallahassee has gotten so much better. I never lose signal anywhere in the city of Jacksonville itself.

I've used these books to find hikes and they're great! I've never done Georgia, but I've used them for Virginia and Arkansas and they are excellent.
My wife and I had an insane infestation of fruit fly last year after bringing home some bad veg from Aldi (fresh food was a bit of a dice roll last year!). Those things just took over, constantly finding corpses in the fridge, I couldn’t leave cat food out because it would be like a horror movie in the morning. The moisture is what brings them in, they don’t need standing water. They were n the corners of the living room and bathroom ceiling, f’n loads of them.
We tried everything. Fly paper and wine and did nothing at all. In the end my wife bought a Katchy, and we haven’t had a single fly since (~august). I wasn’t hopeful because we have other zappers (even tennis racquet ones but they’re too big for small flies), but it is great (link below).
Moisture in the home is the big factor, esp in an apartment complex because you have no say over the plumbing and AC. My wife likes the door open so we literally invited them to breed and party.
Good luck with them though anyway, I hate flies. Roaches don’t bother me half as much. Except flying ones. Palmetto bugs...damn.

Just make sure they're not knockoffs. I've read there are bad ones out there that are selling pretty cheap. I ended up getting 4 pairs on Amazon for $20. But, they're from the manufacturer that NASA recommends (https://eclipse.aas.org/resources/solar-filters)

Have you looked at something like this on Amazon?
They are 80% polyester blend so a little rougher but also feel like they'd last longer than 100% cotton masks:

I've hand washed them about 5 times and they feel like they're holding up well. Personally what sold me was the ties. I don't think the ear loop ones seal as well as the ones you can tie. Although I wish they have a wire embedded so it wouldn't fog up my glasses.

If you are looking to break the lease without owing anything you should probably talk to an attorney who specializes in tenant/landlord issues. Florida law is very landlord friendly but not so much for the tenant.
I had to deal with a roach problem in a rental and found this stuff works very well, better than what the "professionals" were using.

Over the course of half a century, physician Richard Saul has worked with thousands of patients demonstrating symptoms of ADHD. Based on his experience, he offers a shocking conclusion: ADHD is not a condition on its own, but rather a symptom complex caused by over twenty separate conditions—from poor eyesight and giftedness to bipolar disorder and depression—each requiring its own specific treatment. Drawing on in-depth scientific research and real-life stories from his numerous patients, ADHD Does not Exist synthesizes Dr. Saul's findings, and offers and clear advice for everyone seeking answers.

Did a lot of research on this, as I run in treadmill and strength train and bought Harbeth shirts from Amazon. They are polyester and spandex and are similar to Nike Dri-fit but much cheaper. Just hang the dry after washing on delicate washing machine setting and they don't wrinkle and travel well. They are not cheap, but hold up very well.

I spoke with poll workers, who apparently looked into the issue and were satisfied that the signs were more than 150 feet away. The ones I spoke to didn't like the signs either, but really couldn't do anything about them.
Honestly, I looked up this on Amazon. Do we need to purchase these before the next election and check?
Walmart offers a T-Mobile Prepaid $30 card for unlimited Text/Data and 100 mins. I recommend this to people who are thinking about swapping to T-Mobile. It is a cheap option to validate if the coverage works for you or not. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Tmobile-30-Wireless-Airtime-Card/15443357
It didn't just say 'fuck,' it said 'fuckwall' multiple times. It was painted over about a month ago. It's the Richmond & Talbot Inlet to St John’s River. Here are the nextdoor posts.
Oof yeah that does not look like it would support my 50" TV which is a few years old now and heavier than anything you'd buy now in that size class, nevermind 55".
>I haven’t seen a tv wall mount for 55” TVs that only uses one stud but I’m sure they exist, just have to be cognizant of weight.
They definitely exist, they're always on the cheap end or they're at the wrong end of the size spectrum. Most TV mounts are a range, like 26-55" or 32-65". You almost never want to be at the high end of those measurements as your at the extreme end of what that bracket is capable of. Nor do you necessarily want to be on the low end either as the bracket is probably over kill. You want to land somewhere in the middle unless you just have a gargantuan 85 or 90" TV.
Here you go, like I said they exist, but I wouldn't trust this to hold a 55" even in a stud.
I think I may have been the guy that plugged REOLINK a while back, if you check my post history you can see some screenshots of the cameras in action. This is the set we got and I cannot say enough good things about them. I mentioned this in the other thread but JSO couldn’t believe the quality, said it was the best footage they’d ever seen from a homeowner and better than 99% of the stuff they get from banks and businesses. Even if you don’t get this exact package I would strongly encourage you to stay away from the wifi/battery ones. Hope this helps!

I get all the major networks along with pretty much every other local channel. I have to put it in my window though or else it doesn't work as well, so take that in mind. Might need an extender cord to you can put it in the best spot.
An other option is YouTubeTV or Hulu Live. Both have the major local networks.
there will only be a handful of days where the high is under 50. At night there's probably 30ish days a year where the low drops under 45ish
I like this website for climate data
Lots of amazing parks and trails! Don't let anyone tell you Jax isn't bikeable because I've gone hundreds of miles around this city and never had a problem. I actually live near the Regency area and if you like hiking at all there's a great trail loop near there!
https://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/us/florida/live-oak-lake-loop-and-rosemary-ridge-trails
For biking I would definitely recommend Tillie Fowler Regional Park across the street from NAS Jax. A tad far away from Regency but it's the best place for trail and mountain biking in Jax.

fly a big one of these up on a balloon and they should freak out and call all planes down for a bit. http://www.instructables.com/id/Lightweight-Radar-Reflector/
PS: don't really do that, FAA and the military tend to get pissed when big random radar blips come outta nowhere.
A quick easy place to try it out is All Wet Sports. They rent the kayak, paddle and life vest and are right on Pottsburg Creek. They have a groupon avalailable that is basically half off an all day kayak rental. You'll want to bring plenty of water, some snacks and some sunblock. Dress for the weather but wear things that it would be OK to get wet in. You aren't guaranteed to tip over but it could happen. Depending on the day/time you guys decide to go I might be willing to meet you there.
It was a three prong vs four prong outlet. both 240, the difference being an extra ground for safety.

Good point. Yeah, I think staying on the beach is ideal - and it doesn't seem like it'll cost substantially more. Right now we're looking at the Holiday Inn Express, but we have a lot of research left to do.

I used Scotts Discount Movers recently - they were really good. Priced very well, and the movers themselves were very friendly. Local movers, and the owners were very responsive to emails.
I used Thumbtack.com to find them. Highly recommend using that website, as well. If you mention me, because I was a previous customer, they might give you a discount.
SDM used a flat rate of $90/hr which is pretty cheap, but they do have a three hour minimum charge @ $270 total. I felt it was a great value.
Last summer we had 6.97 inches of rain. The average for summer in Florida is 7.13 inches. So I wouldn't worry too much.
I grew up going to Christ the King. It's been a while since I went to a regular mass, but I remember it being pretty good in regards to how crowded it gets. Early morning mass is unsurprisingly your best bet in that regard.

Check out this paper from 1919. Under, "EXPERIMENTS TO DETERMINE MODE OF SPREAD OF INFLUENZA" Published in the journal of American medicine.
It'll take you 5 minutes to read it. When you finish, give me your thoughts on it. I promise you that what you think you know about disease is wrong.
Edit: Louis Pasteur, Antoine Beauchamp, Stephen Paget, Robert Koch, any of these names ringing a bell? All you have to do is read ANY book on the history of germ theory and if you have a rational bone in your body, you'll question it as well.
I've always used PHPMyAdmin for managing MySQL but my boss just turned me on to Navicat which runs on Windows, Mac, Linux and iOS. I still prefer what I am used to but it seems to be a good option.
Then yeah, try LinkedIn. It's less of a hassle than sorting through the CL ads. If you've got a decent resume, why not? Plus, going on interviews is never a bad thing - practice makes perfect.

Yep! Unconscious bias is insane. We did a training on it at work a few years ago and it was eye opening about how much we do that’s not even skin color based. Crazy and it takes a concerted effort to recognize it.
You are right though there is an expectation for an adult to better recognize than a child. And I agree I didn’t get any sense of malicious intent.
Having a kid and trying to teach and raise them in a open and accepting way is really hard and makes me look at a lot of things like this differently. Maybe the benefit of the doubt is t always deserved but I still find myself more willing to give than before.
There is an amazing children’s book about this by Kristen Bell (who herself is amazing and a great parental role model btw). you can get it on Amazon here but support a local book store if you can :) it’s a worthy gift for anyone you know with a kid and holds lessons for adults too
I've lived a couple different places with nasty water (here and North Louisiana, specifically). I always did fine with an undersink filter like this. Under sink RO is fine, too.
As far as whole house systems, I can't say. I don't think they're really necessary though I know a couple people with water softeners. If you'll be on well water, that's a different ball game.
I don't have an old bag but I do have a recommendation. The rachel ray cooler bags are the best I have found. They keep stuff cold forever. Link below to Amazon. This is like $15-20 a bag and you can fit a large pizza box in it.
The second runner up is the cooler bags from trader joes which I think are less than $10 each.
rachel ray jumbo chill out tote
Both bags of course work for hot or cold because they are insulated totes.
If you have an actual cooler what about using that because they do work for either hot or cold it just wouldn't fit pizza and big boxes.
Honestly, I take a pretty hands off approach to my plants and garden. Peppers originally grew in hot humid climates. They love the heat. The biggest issue most people have with plants is over loving them. The deep soak every couple of days does the trick.
Water in the dark. Always water outdoor plants early in the morning (before 7) or late in the evening (after 8). Don’t ever water mid day. You’ll boil your roots.
For pest control I use a mixture of Dr. Bonner’s SalSuds, Neem Oil, and rosemary essential oil. I do 1:1:1 ratio in water and I use an insecticide sprayer (you can buy one at Lowe’s). The amount depends on how big your sprayer jug is, mine is 3 gallons so I do about 3 tsp of each. You gotta play with the ratios. There some info online about this mixture. Just Google salsuds and neem oil organic pesticide. This mixture works beautifully on all plants and I pray it about once a month.
We live in an amazing heartiness zone (9B). Almost every plant will grow here and we can grow almost all year long. Don’t be afraid to give it a go. You don’t need a fancy set up to grow your own food!
OK I got curious. There are a few sites selling live plants, but it's not cheap. Most are sold out, but Amazon has a few with plants still available (apparently it's late in the season)

I bomb our backyard every couple of months with this stuff: https://www.amazon.com/Vets-Best-Treatment-Mosquitoes-Attachment/dp/B00393HSLY. Works wonderfully, doesn't damage grass or plants, and smells pretty good surprisingly.
No, though I use a electric neti pot when my allergies act up, sometimes once a day, and its great. Expensive but great. https://www.amazon.com/Navage-Nasal-Irrigation-Starter-Bundle/dp/B01787L5MO Here is what I use:
My work had really nice chairs and to buy one it was going to be about $1000. Way out out of my budget I could only afford around $150.
I asked all my friends, coworkers, family if they had a chair they liked. No one did but they all had a chair they hated and it was IKEA even people that love IKEA. I also went to IKEA and tried out chairs (they sucked, I love IKEA).
I looked at a bunch of "best of" lists. Looked at chair websites. I looked at thrift shops (check out restore on beach blvd they usually have chairs). I looked at reviews. I finally settled on this Modway chair.
I'm heavier and needed a chair with a higher weight rating, I wanted a specific seat size and back size, this fit all those categories nicely. I did not install the armrests on it. It is very comfy and my butt and back aren't hurting after 20 minutes.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08DHCC8BN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fab_83kIFbGYMN9NR
One of the cheaper ones on the market and after reading a couple of reviews, seemed like it would fit my needs. Haven't had an issue yet. My house is only around 1600 sq ft also.
I’d get a door security bar to set up when your home and you don’t want anyone coming in. That’s regardless of whether you come to an agreement with your apartment complex management.

Alrighty as someone who does spend an awful amount of time online and works in I.T I can throw in my 2 cents.
Modem - Gets your internet from the cable connection.
Router - Allows you to share that internet connection to multiple devices.
If you want 25-50MBps you only need a DOCSIS 3.0 modem. If you get pushback from the rep (Our combo is Docsis 3.1!) tell them to kick rocks. You only need Docsis 3.1 for 350mbps+ speed. Something like this https://smile.amazon.com/MOTOROLA-Certified-Comcast-BrightHouse-Wireless/dp/B019ZY1ZWS would be fine.
Once you replace the modem you will want to get a router. If it's a 2 story house you can either go with an AP with a huge range, or a mesh system. I have a mesh system in my townhouse and my Wifi range is ridiculous.
Something like this https://computers.woot.com/offers/linksys-velop-mesh-wifi-system-8?gclid=CjwKCAjwm_P5BRAhEiwAwRzSOyFSvioWEU5PfmlZK8-WyGnjqZJ3PvkxeX43AnmqBpX_2bPMnOmIVhoCEpwQAvD_BwE
is a solid choice. You can get away with the AC1200 dual band. You hook one up to your router and set the otherone downstairs (preferably as close to it as possible of course. Like the room underneath. But mines 2 rooms over on the first floor). It'll act as a repeater that does a good job seamlessly keeping you connected if you have to move from one mesh wifi router to the other.
Yes that's true. For your use case, 25 would probably be fine. Edit: if you're streaming 2 or more devices at once, maybe go with 50 +
I'm an IT consultant and I install a lot of these for work: https://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-Unifi-Ap-AC-Long-Range/dp/B015PRCBBI/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=unifi+ap&qid=1597853742&s=electronics&sr=1-4
These provide a much stronger output than the equipment Comcast or ATT generally provides. Unifi makes great wireless equipment but it can be a bit difficult to set up for a non tech person. You use an app on your smartphone to configure it.
You might just be able to ask your internet provider to provide you with a wireless access point that is strong enough for your home, or have a tech come up and set up a separate AP on the other floor of the home.
And also, for precautionary reasons, Advion (Amazon sells 4 tubes for like $20) is the best stuff ever. If you don't have roaches, you'll never get them. If you have them already, they'll be gone in less than a month (if you follow directions). https://www.amazon.com/dp/B086YTBW9D/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_jLOAFbV4QP4AD

The picture quality of this one is better than my old one. That's the main reason I like it. One drawback of the new one is that the angle of the screen isn't conducive to viewing video when it's mounted. Too steep of an angle to see it.
Try unshrinkit, however depending on the blanket's size, you may need several bottles. https://smile.amazon.com/Unshrinkit-U2-01-Unshrinking-Solution-Cashmere/dp/B0141GB37M/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?crid=33SUD3KN3SSB5&keywords=unshrinkit+sweater+restorer&qid=1548122220&sprefix=unshr&sr=8-2
Stay away from dairy, nuts, too much sugar. Use some Preperation H from CVS or Walgreens. Do NOT strain when using the bathroom, no matter how much you want to. Eat something greasy to loosen up if you're constipated. Then get yourself a bidet.

You can get them just about anywhere. Put them throughout the house behind furniture, in cabinets. And in other places you'd expect roaches. They are irresistible to roaches and kill them quickly. Only downside is when you look at them you can see where the roaches have been munching on them and it's kinda disconcerting hahaha.
Jacksonville's water, whether on a well or not, has always been funky. I grew up with it and I think it's alright. Still, I installed this under-sink filter to appease certain people I live with. Pretty simple to install and makes a difference in taste as long as you replace the filter every 6-8 months. You could go all out and get an RO system, but they are pricey and take up a good bit of space under the sink.
He's always out of my favorite nori flakes lol actually him and jax asian market are out of it too. they carry the brand but i guess its popular? https://www.amazon.com/JFC-Nori-Furikake-Seasoning-Ounce/dp/B0006G5KEY
I live by Sandalwood (north of UNF) and I had to get a shower water filter because I live by the chlorination plant. I couldn't get my hair clean https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00154Z61I/ref=s9_al_bw_g60_i3
The switch will be connected directly to the pi's GPIO, which will control a relay. The electrical wiring in the walls will be connected to that relay which is connected to the light. I'll be using a 2 channel relay, something similar to the link below. There are also 8 channel relays, so you can control 8 devices with only 1 Pi. I plan on using an 8 channel relay for a Pi controlled thermostat. Also, prices are much cheaper on eBay if you're willing to wait a few weeks for shipping. http://www.amazon.com/SainSmart-2-CH-2-Channel-Relay-Module/dp/B0057OC6D8
But yes that would also work if you want to wirelessly control the relay, you just have to be connected to your WiFi.
