On the off chance that whoever is doing this reads this sub: you are not doing a service to the next person who uses the bars. You are in fact leaving garbage in the park. When the tape is removed it leaves sticky gunk on the bars.
Buy a pair of grips.
Nah...if you want to fit in you gotta use these. All the coolest dog owners use these and then casually leave them next to the garbage can or to get run over in the street.
This happens quite frequently. The delays usually only last a few minutes. Looks like this one is resolved already.
I actually have a database of all the Path Alerts from the inception of my app; 'Path Train Companion'. I also tried my best to categorize the alerts (Weekend Changes, Delays, Elevator Problems, Train Line Affected, etc). If there is interest, ~~I could release the database~~ or try to generate some statistics. I'm happy to work on this with someone, especially if you're good at quantifying datasets.
--MileSquareDevelopers
EDIT: I just checked the DB. I created it on 12/19/17, so far it has recorded 1,340 Path Alerts. Wow, that's more than I was expecting.
EDIT2: Someone asked for an export of the alert database. I put it in a Google Sheet which can be viewed here.
Haven't tried it myself but on the JC Heights United FB group people recommend using the WOTS app (word on the street) in these situations. They say the cops come out to deal with these situations pretty quickly.
They just want money... Read Capitalism and Freedom by Milton Friedmen or Adam Smith The Wealth of Nations. The market is setting the price. People are buying the shit. Blame the renters who agree to exorbitant sums a month to the tune of 90% of their income or the homeowner that sells and moves at the higher price as soon as a profit is to be made. We are all the problem... and its nobody's fault. If you could stabilize the market and make it less transient, possibly making more people stay long term... Maybe you could stabilize the prices. However, I don't think you can since most are looking to better deal NYC and NJ the minute they move in from Idaho and Chicago and Denver and XYZ Midwest/Western state....

> the only people you'd see on the bus were poor people, basically only minorities and people that seemed very down trodden. This made for a very depressing experience on the bus.
Sorry about all those poors bumming you out on your commute. :-/
Are you serious?
A bus gets you from point-A to point-B. Most of the time, it's faster than walking. Pay the fare and sit down. It's not supposed to be an experience.
>it's an 11 min walk to the Hudson-Bergen and I feel like that might be too long of a walk given that it's summer and it'll be hot.
Somehow, people manage that walk (and then some) every day. In the cold, in the rain, when it's hot, etc. Jersey City isn't Death Valley, CA. You aren't going to melt.
>Might even consider buying a car for the summer :S
If you're a fan of trivia, you'll love this fact. (lol)
> I'll just live in the gentrified areas of Brooklyn and commute??
Good idea. The huddled masses of downtrodden bus-people and sweltering strolls to the Light Rail in Jersey City might make your "experience" too unpleasant. Maybe consider staying home alogether?
>Basically, who are the people that ride the bus?
People like me. See ya soon!
Today's the day! Rain or shine (and it's looking like mostly shine) Pacific Flea Spring Re-opening is happening. For first time Lyft and Uber riders, here are some promo codes for discounted rides to the flea.
It could be, if you're only a casual internet user and don't really plan on doing much intensive streaming or downloading. I would 100% install a VPN though such as Private Internet Access (yes it cost money, but not much).
A VPN will route all of your traffic through an encrypted tunnel to an anonymous remote server. This masks your identity but more importantly, protects your traffic from being intercepted.
Wi-Fi networks can't discriminate their signal and only send data to your device. Instead everyone sees everything, and but your device only keeps what is directed towards it. With simple free software anyone connected to the network can capture all of the data and analyze it. If any of it is unencrypted, as much still is (for example any time you visit a website that is 'http' rather than 'https') than they can see everything.
Even visiting encrypted websites without a VPN is risky on a public network as there are ways to intercept traffic and trick you into giving up your private data.
Welcome to the Lafayette neighborhood OP! No premium coffee shop around yet, but tons of cafe con leche spots if you're into that. I recommend u join Nextdoor Lafayette for all info related to the neighborhood, a lot of good things are in the works.

Haven't had it happen to me but yeah tons of people in the area have complained about it. Package theft is discussed a lot on Nextdoor if you're a member there, lots of people even have cameras recording the thefts.
I do often see opened package boxes scattered on the sidewalk while walking around the area.
Some people have mentioned that there are groups of people that hang out around the park & kind of follow the delivery drivers around as they make the rounds but I don't know if that's true.
Basically you'll need to figure out how to get the drivers not to leave the packages outside otherwise someone's probably going to swipe it.
Or if it's Amazon packages - Amazon does have lockers for deliveries at the gas station on Grand St (Sunoco I think?). There are also Amazon lockers further north at the Speedway gas station on Marin (by the Best Buy, just past the Home Depot).
> I think this type of thinking is why housing is so expensive. If you have to have 100 meetings and 300 permits before you can build anything, that means it gets pricey.
Yep, this is well documented. https://www.amazon.com/Neighborhood-Defenders-Participatory-Politics-Americas/dp/1108477275
I spent about $800 on this laptop from Amazon and $120 for the Premium edition of the game ($60 for the basic version) on Steam.

Yea, sadly that wont work. It need a bit of seam sealer before paint, as well as some of the problem areas are bumps and imperfections that wont hide well. It's got surface rust, so getting it blasted is a must. And wrapping it isn't night and day cheaper than painting it. At minimum you want a vehicle epoxy primered before wrapping it.
I emailed my freeholder (Joel Torres) about this, and he emailed back quickly with what I assume is his canned response that included a zoom link, which I assume will be the same one:
Good afternoon. Thank you very much for your email regarding this matter. At our meeting yesterday, I expressed not only my concerns with this item but also the fact that we need to expand our conversation into a deeper look at how we as an institution operate to dismantle systemic racism and support our most disenfranchised communities and residents.
Before the meeting, the county removed two of the three items from the agenda. I received a message from another constituent that stated the chairman will be tabling the other item from the agenda. I ask you and others to continue your messages and keep an eye out for the meeting tomorrow at 4pm to make sure it is completely removed. Here is the link to the Zoom public portion of the meeting: <em>https://zoom.us/j/91553925879</em>.
To be clear, I was never in support of this whatsoever and was working to try and keep the items off the agenda. It's completely tone deaf and not indicative of the peaceful efforts that took place in our county or the type of resources needed to lift our communities up and completely take down systemic racism throughout society.
This is especially true when I introduced a resolution at the same meeting to declare Racism a Public Health Crisis in our county and urging the county to take tangible, proactive steps to rebuild systems that have led to institutional racism and begin to build better communities where all have an equitable opportunity to freely live and breathe. This item will be voted on tomorrow and I hope to introduce some more tangible items to fund programming that can better serve our communities.
Thanks again for the email.
Sincerely,
Joel Torres, MA, MCHES
Hudson County Freeholder (D-4)
I took the survey but there wasn't really a free text field for thoughts so I thought I'd split some out here:
The maps for each district should be zoomed in to that district. The default view gives a dense cluster of markers which is unusable without zooming in.
Hovering over the categories on the pie-chart should display a box explaining what the categories are. This would be in addition to the pop up box already provided.
Clicking on a category in the pie-chart should filter both the map and the line graph to show only calls matching that category.
It may be helpful to color code the markers on the map to match the categories on the pie-chart.
A nice feature would be filter sliders on the timeline graph which allow you to adjust the start / end dates. Changing the dates on the graph would also update the pie-chart and map markers to filter for the selected range. See Google Finance for an example of what I mean.
You should be able to click on an individual map marker and see more information about that call, i.e. the call code description.
Overall though a great start!
Russian Alex has been my go-to car service guy for the airport. I've used him four times now and he's always on time. I also text him the flight number of my return trip and he's there even if it's 11:30PM. It's $45 each way. 201.455.1422.
Alternatively if you haven't used Uber yet, use my promo code and we each get $20 off: https://uber.com/invite/8l4qt. It shouldn't cost you more than $20 to get to EWR after the discount.

This kit includes a lead test strip, which was my main concern.
I currently use the Transit app which is similar to your app but also shows MTA information. However, I like that your app saves me the trouble of filtering through all of the MTA lines and checking the PATH Twitter for delays or other issues.
~~However, I'm having trouble with the Alerts tab. Every time I swipe down to refresh, I get the following error:~~
> ~~Ad failed please try again later.~~
Edit: Nevermind, issue was on my end, nothing wrong with the app.

I grew up in a lighting family, my dad was a lighting sales rep, and I studied industrial Design. I hate recessed lighting. It's an awful, no brain, cookie cutter approach to lighting. I do like having a central room light, often a ceiling fan fixture, and then you can accessorize with lamps. What you might like best is a "torchiere", a bright light on a stand that points to the ceiling so that all the light in the room is reflected down. Very soft and comfortable, some even have a reading lamp secondary light on the side of the pole.

OMG I just got one for my little guest room. This summer 4 people slept on it and all four went home and ordered it. One of them had just gotten another mattress a few months earlier and donated the old one in order to get this. This mattress is completely amazing, I really can't say enough about it.
There's actually history there that leads across the river. In the 30s Robert Moses was building his empire by controlling the Triboro Authority, being the NYC parks commissioner, State parks commissioner, and several other hats. Any time he could snap up a random traffic island or such and call it a park added to his power and cashflow. He became a national model!

Listen, if you have short hair the best investment you can make, that isn't JC real estate in the 90s, is a $35 hair clipper. I've been doing my own hair and beard for 25 years. It's really not hard, it's cheap, and obviously convenient, you don't have to leave the house! Plus you can mess around and try different lengths and beardlines for yourself.
My basic haircut goes like this: 5/8 on the top, taper around the ears, 1/4 everywhere else, blending the 1/4 into the longer top, call the wife to do the back neckline. 10 minutes.

I’d try something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-BITIWEND-Contact-Operate-Receiver/dp/B07MH4148Z
Not sure it’s outdoor rated, but these things work on magnets and a reed sensor, so you could take the sensor side tape on a desiccant packet or two and put in a ziplock plastic bag and attach it like that. Should last quite a while if nobody tampers with it, and for the price, just replace every few years. Replace the packets when you replace the batteries so you keep moisture under control.
Or if you’re more technically inclined, Open it up, and silicone/epoxy coat it, then add a seal to whatever battery bay. I’ve seen people do this to zigbee door/window sensors for things like gates, mailboxes they wanted to keep tabs on.
Thank you so much. I see them several days in a month.
Not very often but whenever they show up, I wish they will be done soon.
Hope that your week will be better!
I also wear these 3M Peltor and it helps a lot! Plane pilots wear them too.
I don't really have a big issue with people driving trucks or whatever, but the number of times I've been on 15 and some jackass with a raised truck blasting it's lights into my rearview mirror is infuriating. I've joked with my wife about carrying around one of these in the car to get them to fuck off.
Hoboken is getting 30 stations, I'm guessing they'll install those first before adding more stations in Jersey City. There's a webinar about this topic that should answer your questions though: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_b3W7IV3jToGsPLk0QMHN2A

Just saw a posting in Nextdoor about a found dog. It’s a boy and has a green collar. Does anyone know the owner of this dog?

It looks like this story started with a post on Nextdoor, and, well, you might know how Nextdoor generally is (I think you need an account to see this): https://nextdoor.com/news_feed/?post=176909888
Basically the witness saw the end of the scene, and they believe the guy on the left attacked the guy on the right, and the guy in the middle sort of cooled it off. They tried calling 911 to no avail at first. FWIW a lot of other people are commenting that they feel unsafe around there and receive catcalls.
Honestly... these things worked 30 years ago, today... not really.
There's tons of sets for undoing these:

Anyone out doing this stuff, has a set of keys. I know there's better sets out there, that's the first that came up.
Someone who wants your wheels will waste the extra 5 seconds.
Lots of dealers include wheel locks because it's another line item for why the vehicle is marked up to it's asking price. It's pretty standard. I'd bet way more than half the cars posted on this subreddit had them.
I got a bunch off of amazon. When i ordered them they came within a week. Seems to be high demand now

The city has opened school parking lots to residents to park in (since schools are closed due to COVID) - maybe that can help you out/save you some money until you get your parking permit sorted out.
There's info posted here, about midway down the page, with a map/list of school parking lots. The closest one to you would be on Central at St. Paul's (the school is between Central and Oakland, with the parking entrance on Central).
Also, I occasionally see locals advertising spots they rent on nextdoor.com (tried to find one I saw this week that was on Oakland to send to you but it must've rented already as it's not there anymore) - maybe get registered on that platform if you want to keep an eye out for a local spot to rent.

You probably need to file a police report. But I don't know if JCPD will be able to do much with that unless you managed to get anything on camera or similar.
Might also be worth checking out Nextdoor, multiple people there have discussed stolen packages in downtown JC. Seems that package thieves have been out in force lately, maybe Amazon's Prime Day has something to do with it? JCPD did end up arresting someone that was driving around grabbing packages. But I'm sure there are still other package thefts going on.
If you plug that into the DC cigarette adapter in your car, you run the risk of blowing a fuse. Much better to hook up directly to the battery with something like this: https://smile.amazon.com/Viair-00088-88P-Portable-Compressor/dp/B005ASY23I/

It happens so much in JC they don't do anything , but report it , if someone else catches the guy on video or can identify him and they catch him with your stuff you might get it back as they do often catch the repeat offenders.
But for the most part they get dozens if not hundreds of these calls a day and don't do anything especially if you don't have pictures or video of the guy.

I have FiOS and use this mesh system. I haven't had any issues with the Wifi, but I don't have phone/TV service (not sure why the router would affect the TV/phone, but I'm not an expert). I lived in a railroad apartment and the signal would get horrendously blocked by walls, this was a lifesaver getting signal from the other side of the apartment. My mom also uses it in my aunt's apartment next to my grandmother's so they can share wifi through the walls, they haven't had any issues either!

edit to add: my mom added it to a Spectrum network, so it seems cross-compatible.
I have FIOS and use google wifi. The annoying thing is that google wifi will create its own network and will be on a separate ssid than your FIOS router.
Do you have any wires running anywhere? You can do a full mesh, but mesh with a "wired backhaul" is far better (and technically speaking, not really a mesh). If you are working from home, and have no wires whatsoever, I would run at least a single one to the other side of the house along the floorboards and any other areas cover it with this: https://www.amazon.com/Power-Gear-Extension-Installation-43003/dp/B002DNI568/ref=zg_bs_6577538011_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=G9J0TJH0795V6Z1R6Y9V
If you are dead set against wires, eeros is what a bunch of my coworkers use.
Then you can plug in a router in your room and either connect directly via a wired connection or use the wifi off of it.
The only way to get rid of mice is to kill the mice. Relocating them doesn't help b/c they remember how to come back, plus I think they might leave pheromones or godknowswhat to help other mice enter.
I've lived in apartments basically most my life and have dealt with mice way too many times. A shot in the dark but you can try a Powerline Adapter. Connect one end to where the network cable and other end to the room where the camera will be. It should be enough bandwidth to run the webcam. Still available on amazon. https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Powerline-Adapter-Ethernet-Passthrough/dp/B0778Y6K6N
It was incredibly easy, swap out the router, login via the app, plug in the extenders. Whole thing took me maybe 10 minutes
Anything that adds surface area to your walls will soundproof them. You don't need some full pro job most likely like a studio would. These are fine for most people
Also you may be shocked how much just getting your speakers off the floor will help. Just a small riser for a speaker helps it not send the vibrations directly into the floor.
dude, sign up for Private Internet Access. $10 per year, you get a secure VPN with speeds that won't choke your ISP bandwidth (I max out my 75/75 FiOS line). They keep no logs so they can't turn you over even if they wanted to.
It was acceptable to torrent in the open years ago but now you're a fool if you're not using a VPN to protect yourself now.
Buy a milk house heater. Super safe and cheap to run. They don't overheat, turn off when tipped, super sturdy, little fingers can't get in. People laugh when they see mine (it's not very pretty). The next thing they do is ask where they can get one. It works like a champ. They sell them on Amazon for under $40.
40th floor here and have a cheap thin wall mount antenna stuck to an internal wall inside a closet and have no issues with reception (something like this) - so I'm not sure this is neccesarilly true. Probably more to do with the direction you face - it's all broadcast from the top of the Empire State building so your line of sight to that and how much is between you and it probably makes more different than the floor you're on.
Have it connected to one of these rather than a TV and then stream it.
Make sure you get yourself a pretty heavy duty chain and lock it up to something that can't be cut easily. Something like this. It may seem like overkill but if its parked outside without something like this its only a matter of time before it gets lifted.
#2 I am a big fan of minimal shoes, so when I go running or hiking, I like water socks, but they are not exactly the most stylish. Boat shoes and Toms might also be a good bet for something a bit more stylish and good for summer.
I picked up a ARRIS SURFboard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem. It was also on sale when I did so. However here is a list of potential modems. My only requirement for it was it was 1 Gig minimum and 3 star cert, and then I have my own flashed router for my network.
I have the Coleman Converta Cot, got it off Amazon. Coleman Converta Cot(TM) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00363PS3W/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_MYfoxb5MX8TH5
I never use it anymore, and it's barely used as it, so I'm actually selling mine for $15
Hey there - I bought a Mediasonic Homeworx HW110AN and it really suits my needs. Granted, there are stronger and "better" HD antennas out there, but this was under $10 and I don't have issues with it unless there is severe weather. Even then, it's not bad. I am on the south side of Mercer Street with a north facing window. So, my antenna points directly towards Manhattan.
