Hey Lexington redditors! With the help of a friend/photographer, I created a book highlighting local coffee shops around town. While this is clearly a shameless plug for the book, I’m also here to answer any questions you have about local coffee, making/selling a book, or even CASA (the nonprofit I am donating a portion of the proceeds to).
The book will be available in local coffee shops this week, and is on Amazon now (though it's cheaper to buy in stores and I'd honestly prefer people buy it locally).
Edit: Thank you all for the support! If you’re interested in purchasing a copy, it’s currently available at Third Street Stuff & Coffee. It’ll be at Lussi Brown, Broomwagon, and Coffee Times by this weekend, with more places to follow. Thanks again!
Not sure about KY laws specifically but broadly speaking, shipping alcohol without a license is illegal.
If you plan to, avoid using USPS and go with FedEx or UPS. Package it really well and don't declare that it's alcohol.

Anyone with Security torx bits can easily remove the lock/gps from the back wheel, and turn an un-ridable trash bike, into a free bike for a person in need of transportation.
I'd encourage everyone to get a set and start freeing as many bikes as you can find before the city sanitation services takes them all to the dump. I really doubt Spin is going to come pick them up.
There's a good book about him that details his early life in Kentucky. By all accounts, he was an exceedingly good person.
I've ridden this route and it is totally fine. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29996204
The trouble is getting to Winchester. That route does great with minimal cars and no real sketchy sections. A bit more out of the way than just booking straight down 60, but its gonna be far more relaxed and safe. A friend of mine said he took Todds/Colby from Jacobson park area and said it was fine, but a bit hilly.
There's a fair amount of ice on the non-major roads.
Pretty much all of Keithshire Way looks like this.
I always see meetup.com mentioned here, but every time I get on there I don't see many options. It's a boardgame group and singles over 40 and not much else. Am I missing something?
I saw them early in the evening last week. Have you tried the SkyView app? It’s great for finding stars/planets/space debris

I have been there a couple of times. It seems a little bit like a club that I wasn't invited to and I wasn't very impressed with the tool selection anyway as most of it I already owned personally. Not to mention that I also wouldn't show my face there if they told me that Trump stuff but I visited way before that was a problem.

On the soldering subject. I have built several quadcopters and fixed many cars/electronics with soldering and as far as learning that goes I say get yourself and iron and some solder and go at it. The one thing I got that helped me a lot was tip cleaner/tinner to help get started with a new tip/iron. I linked it below but besides that it isn't hard to learn. One tip that really helps me, besides the tip stuff is the melt so solder on the iron before you try to heat something else up. The heat transfer through the solder works much better than just putting the iron to it. If you have any questions you can DM me and I would be happy to answer them. thanks!

For the curious here is an easy to search and filter Excel file with all of the ‘Farms’ and Farms in Fayette County. Along with individual totals for the amount of revenue lost to exemptions. This is all publicly available data scraped from the Fayette County PVA website. Fayette Farm PVA data
Yes, the Carnegie Center has some great, for the price, classes. The Library has free intro class. I can't find the site right now, but I took it down town. It was good, but very basic.
Also checkout Duolingo. If it 100% free, and really helps. Works on mobile, and web.
> So saying "I'm homeless, please help" isn't a solicitation. It's vague enough that it could be constructed as a message to help in general.
Ohhh...
Even though I don't like it, that makes more sense to me now. Still seems like there could (should?) be restrictions on where and how people ask for help. Seems to me that if I needed help (and not drug money) I'd go to the homeless shelters downtown and ask for help there. Not saying asking for help should be limited to those places, just saying the people that need really help would probably be there and not on the side of the road.
Thanks for the explanation.
Sure, that might be the origin of the term, but meanings change! (If you disagree, then you are being a purist. :) )
AFAICT moonshine used to be any illegally produced/smuggled liquor, then it gained the connotation of a specific type. And now it's just used to refer to that type.
You may want to post in Nextdoor Neighbor which can be very helpful at times and cover the neighborhood you live in. I would also be very leery of posting your phone number on this or any site IMO.

Are you comfortable with learning on your own? If so, I'd suggest looking at online training sites such as Treehouse or Codecademy instead. There are also tons of free resources out there on YouTube and similar sites.
Edit: Also, there is definitely a steady supply of work in the field.

Awesome, thanks for the info! I was completely unaware that such an app existed.
For anyone else interested, here is a link to the Android version of the app:
I got my daughter a couple of lessons using this Groupon a couple of years ago. They were nice and competent. "Wingswept Farm - Up To 52% Off - Nicholasville, KY | Groupon" https://www.groupon.com/deals/wingswept-farm-1-lexington
You might join and post to https://nextdoor.com/. I've found many helpful people and generally friendly.
Search Google and Priceline for rates, then pick the lowest rates and go to that rental company direct. Sometimes a rental company has a lower rate when going through Google and a best rate promise at their site.
Also search the Airport and the City locations seperately. I recently rented from Hertz at the New Circle location and it was half the price of the airport.
Sorry the website is scant, there is more info on their facebook page and twitter feed.
Last week they signed a lease for 436 Chair Ave, which is downtown off Broadway. Construction is supposed to begin in September. They should be open before the end of the year if all goes well.
Not much info there. I hope it's real!
Edit: Looks like it's going to be located here, by Naked Pizza and all that stuff.
Edit 2: Here is their Twitter feed.

For me personally, most of the $$ choices are not high enough quality to expense ratio for me to want to go. I detest tipping for mediocre service and spending as much on one meal as my grocery bill at Aldi would cost.
I just rarely go out and am pretty happy about it.
This article from March says that they get the data from "third-party services" and indeed from android users who opt-in to the "My location" feature on Google Maps.
every now and then, someone on nextdoor app posts about "free fire firewood available" like this one posted few hours ago...you should keep an eye out there too.

No. The one that was linked will provide 120V. Looks like whatever you're trying to plug into it wants only 4.5V.
Is the other end of the cord connected to the light itself?
Edit: This one might work.
The "Climb On Inn" is a newer place, I was over there last weekend. The main cabin can't sleep 15 but they have a secondary cabin on the property for more folks to sleep in.
Board games. There is a group who meets once a week at The Rusty Scabbard who has shown interest in bringing/playing games at this event. There is not a Facebook event, I'm finding out more and more that people actually use Facebook. The event is on Kre8Now's calendar and usually gets mentioned in RunJumpDev's Google group.
thats only for speaker to amp. you need the kit that has everything. power wire size depends on how many watts the amp is but that ones good for a 1200 watt amp

A bit later people started encrypting banking websites, and they'd be decrypted once they were on your machine. This is what the s on https denotes... secure. This reduced the risk of the information you send being viewed in transit, and made it safer to use public WiFi to do these sorts of things.
Many years later and a significant portion of the internet is now encrypted, including social media websites like this one, so using free wifi should be safe enough.
If you're concerned, a software based VPN, like NordVPN, expressvpn, mullvad or mozillavpn will keep your information safe in transit, no matter what network you're attached to.
Tldr, most websites encrypt traffic to and from your browser these days, and most browsers will tell you if something is fishy about the webpage's security. You should be fine using public WiFi as a result.

Sadly, I don't have any spares right now.
Strangely enough I was searching Amazon for the same thing this very morning. Size 8 is $9.62 used "very good" here
I have 20+ hot sauces with a strong bias to Asian (gochujang) and Mexican (jalapeno, habanero) chili's.
However I found SINA Akabanga Chili Oil from Rwanda in the International section of Kroger and it is probably 150,000 SHU vs. Tabasco at 3,000 SHU or Cholula at 1,000 SHU.
As a cheap everyday hot sauce I like El Yucateco Black Label, about 10,000 SHU, and with a charred, smokey flavor. Or everyones favorite, Franks Red Hot, at 450 SHU for a tiny touch of heat on delicate foods.
SHU = Scoville Heat Units
There are some decent GC-styled USB controllers out there, too. Makes the emulation feel more complete. Here's one built for the Switch, but works just as well with PC (I believe): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GXJV9NM/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_PQZFM7J08VR8WX6G157C
Well you can try and beat the market. Most people fail. The one's that don't can't beat it consistently. And even if they could the fees would be outrageous for regular retail investors.

Don't expect a big thunder storm in January or February. You may get some in March and April, just depending on the conditions. Normally they are later in the year, when the air is more unstable, and it is very warm and the humidity is high.
As it is said above, the temperature can be very broad in January. It isn't uncommon to have weeks where it is in the low 80s, especially in winter, then the next week be in the teens. Here is a site with the history of weather in Lexington. You can get an idea of what the temperatures would be like along with how much rain/snow.
Lexington isn't that great of a city to walk in. Everything is spread out, because there wasn't natural thing to stop it from spreading out, so you will most likely need to either use public transportation, which isn't great, or a car. Biking is decent, but the city wasn't built with bikes in mind.
It's not "my" definition, just the actual definition, https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/socialism:
>any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
> a system of society or group living in which there is no private property > a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
>a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done
This is a myth. The reason housing prices are high is because we aren't building enough new housing while the population of cities grows. We have built our cities to be car-oriented instead of built for living and walking. We've prioritized suburbs at the expense of inner cities.
Get rid of parking minimums, height limits, legalize duplexes and fourplexes, and build more condos and apartments. Read this: https://www.amazon.com/Missing-Middle-Housing-Thinking-Building/dp/1642830542
I felt safer there than walking around anywhere else with my camera.
There is a massive police presence. They stagger on either side of the street and every other house.. sort of like this:
P _ P _ P _ P _ P _ --------------------- [Ring 1] [Ring 2] --------------------- _ P _ P _ P _ P _ P
When I went and took photos I sort of stood close to them, guys with press passes went and stood up behind them in some cases.
Edit: Where the 'rings' were what ever was going on. You can't coordinate a crowd that big so every 20' was something different. It was a 5 ring circus. You had the girls up flashing people. The guys climbing trees. A bunch of people chanting USA and jumping.

You'll not only meet people this way, but you'll meet people with mutual interests and will already be doing a fun activity that you both enjoy. No awkward dates, no small talk. You already know at least one thing each other likes to do and you're already doing it! Meetup.com is a great place to find some of these groups as well but as /u/pfhk19 said, don't go looking for a date. Go to have fun on it's own right, and be open to making friends which may eventually evolve into a relationship.
I work somewhere that you could work eventually, but I am positive we are not looking for any completely entry level guys right now. CCNA plus a couple years experience, we could definitely talk.
Keep an eye here (INDEED.COM) I noticed a posting from Amazon on there, depending on how much other PC/server experience you may have outside networking.
Good luck to you.

I've always used http://www.geocaching.com/seek/default.aspx
That website has a lot of questions for people new to geocaching, like how to use the site and "etiquette". One of the main rules is that if you take something from the cache, you should leave something in its place (you will find a lot of little trinkets like toy cars or keychains, just something little if the cache is big enough to hold anything, or even a "trackable" which is an item that has a number associated with it. You go to the website and enter the number and it'll tell you where it's been and if it has a goal for a particular place it wants to end up.) The other rules is "Cache in, trash out". If you come across any trash on the way, picking it up and throwing it away is just a good way of keeping the area clean and attractive.
I have an app on my Blackberry called Geocache Navigator. I just got an LG Android phone and it's just called Geocaching in the App Market. Both are made by Groundspeak and use the database from the geocaching website I linked above. I would imagine iPhones have a smiliar app. It will use your GPS to show you caches within a user specified distance from your location. You can use satellite and/or street views to get you to the general vicinity of the cache and then you can switch it to a compass that will tell you the direction and approximate distance you should walk. Most caches also have "Hints" like "This is a nice place to HANG OUT" to tell you that it is probably hanging from something instead of being on the ground. There are some that are so easy you literally just get out of your car and walk right up to it... some have taken me an hour of wandering around. Only once have I run into someone else looking for the same cache and I felt bad that I was in the process of putting it away, so I kind of ruined the hunt, but it was fun meeting someone else that was interested in geocaching.
Hope this helps!

I'm late to the game here but I have a laptop I installed CloudReady on you're welcome to have to give to him.
CloudReady is basically a way to turn an old laptop into a Chromebook.
I've been giving computers away for nearly ten years, mostly with Linux, but that's a learning curve people don't usually enjoy.
This way you can still sell off the stuff gathering dust anyway.
Thelint lizardis the way to go. However there is a company that cleans air vents that I would highly recommend especially for older homes. https://www.yelp.com/biz/alexander-air-duct-cleaning-lexington
Actually just finished reading this book, it was pretty good: https://www.amazon.com/Shantytown-USA-Forgotten-Landscapes-Working/dp/0674660455
While I don't recommend a pump that plugs into the dash outlet (too low amperage), I highly recommend keeping a portable pump in the trunk.
I keep a Viair 88P pump in my truck. It requires too much amperage to plug into a dash port (you have to clamp directly to the battery, ideally with the engine running) but it's a great little pump. Saved my ass out in the Red River Gorge once.
Right on. I had to program a 2012 Silverado fob a while back and Dorman makes an ODB scanner tool for pairing the fob to the truck. It looks like they make one that might work for your HHR: https://www.amazon.com/Dorman-13737-Keyless-Entry-Remote/dp/B00HE1FQKC
The one I got for the Silverado worked perfectly. However, while it's the same brand, I don't have any experience with the exact model I linked above. So don't take my word for it, and give it your own due diligence. Good luck!
If you can, I would recommend doing it yourself. It’s much much cheaper. I digitized about 40 home videos last month and it worked perfectly. Here is what I purchased.

There's a cool app on Android (probably available for iOS) that identifies plants based on a photo.
There's several but I use PlantNet because it's free. I wouldn't say it's saved me because I don't eat random berries, but I did eat some after finding out what it was.
I found some of these American beautyberries while I was out walking and tried a few of them after the app told me what they were.
Really cool app.

Definitely School Sushi. Tonkotsu and customize with any toppings you like.
Tachibana is ok as well, but not as good as School.
And if you want to do-it-yourself, you can order a 5-pack kit from Ichiran on Amazon. You’ll need to buy items like pork/egg/green onion separately. Overall, that one is better than any in town, but it’ll take some work to prepare ;)
This would be better than a av to HDMI as it's actually meant specifically for the Wii.
Not to sound naive but when you say replacement kit are talking this semi professional one https://www.amazon.com/iCracked-iPhone-Screen-Replacement-White/dp/B00QJBP1JY which I couldn't find for less than $50 or something similar to just the cheapo glass u/judge_bergan mentioned?
The book Weird Kentucky is a good source for some of the more odd things around our state. There's an annoying sort of condescending air about the author when writing about a lot of the stuff which aggravated me, but it still has some pretty cool stuff in it with plenty of representation for Lexington.
I'm using the Mohu Leaf Metro and it works well. Although, now after reading /u/Angrytim's comment I feel a little stupid for not getting the equivalent AmazonBasics antenna for ~$7 less.
Edit: Updated link.
I got a corsair mechanical keyboard with cherry MX switches and thought it would make the world of difference when typing. I don't know, maybe I'm not the mechanical keyboard guy or something cause I don't really like it. I would prefer a regular keyboard over a mechanical keyboard anyway. Maybe it's just the keyboard I got. This is the one.
You don't need to mod to play out of region games. Just use a Freeloader or Action Replay. Easy as pie.
It has been a few days-- here's what I did.
I decided to send the Arris SB6141 back to Amazon. Honestly, one of the things that pushed me to send it back was that the LEDs on that thing are so damn bright, which is a problem since I have the cable setup in my bedroom. :P
I ended up ordering a Motorola MB7420. This is a 16 channel modem and certified by TWC. It's a new model that just came out a few months ago, which could be a risky buy, but from what I'm reading, the internal hardware is similar to a Zoom 5370 which has been out a little longer and seems to have a good reputation.
The MB7420 arrived a few days ago. TWC activated it with no problem, and it has been performing perfectly with 16 channels connected. The great thing is that the LEDs are a lot less bright than the Arris SB modem. I'm very happy so far! Now I wait for Maxx....
Does anyone know what modems work with/will work with Windstream's gigabit? I was looking at picking up this modem, but was unsure given the limited options and information.
