Searching the Play Store might have been easier, but to aid your search, this port of Nethack is the one I use, and seems to be the best. It comes with all the standard features, plus some tilesets and Hearse. The control scheme might take a bit to get used to, but it works. I recommend using Nethack Encyclopedia if you need spoilers for offline use.
I started with Vulture for Nethack. Once I had gotten used to the basic of the gameplay, I switched over to the terminal and never looked back. Basically, I abandoned the graphical version by the time I had learnt how to survive very early game.
Those credits appear to be taken from the 3.4.3 Guidebook.
The devteam have not been anonymous so much as keeping game discussions between themselves, lest they be inundated by every @ and his d.
I doubt we'll see another release. Last I heard, the devteam had noted that they'd rather see greater distinction between the roles, rather than new features. But it's been a long time.
The source code is available, of course, so Slash'Em and other variants could be seen as carrying the torch right now.
Lizard corpse
I don't think anyone other than the developers know. There's a newgroup thread from almost 9 years ago asking the same question, and although there's plenty of speculation, source code digging, and history searching, there is no conclusive answer.
It seems like someone just put in dead lizards as a ward against the new moon and a charm against confusion when eaten, and then it was repurposed to also cure stoning. If you can track down the author of the change in NetHack 1.3d, you might get a better answer.

returns no posts giving a reason why it should be lizards. The best I can
do is give some history, as reflected in old source distributions
> > Hack 1.0 - First appearance of the cockatrice. Stoning by hissing is an
instakill in this version, with a chance of 1/5 per hiss.
> > [snip]
> > NetHack 1.3d - Eating a lizard [corpse, which appears randomly] cures stoning if the DGKMOD symbol is defined at compile time. This is the default. Self-polymorph (first implemented here) cures stoning, if you "feel like a new (wo)man".
> > [snip]
> > NetHack 3.0.6 - First appearance of live lizards. The lizard corpse is no longer randomly generated.
(bold and [bracket edits] are mine)
I decided there was no harm in trying on the rings my dog would steal for me, as they couldn't be cursed and polymorph would not damage my non-existing armor. I forgot about the dangers of conflict though, and standing next to the shopkeeper proved fatal...
/u/ summons in text posts don't seem to work. (I noticed this post when a bot announced it on IRC.)
Re: the reassuring edit in question, you can actually see proof of NetHack being developed here. As of the time of writing, there was a commit just four days ago. (The commit activity is somewhat unbalanced; often one or two devs will take on the bulk of the small day-to-day work, with others working on bigger things that appear all at once, or just hanging back and giving advice.)
It's still free and I'm not the dev, just an interested party.
I know a few of you were asking about ios nethack recently so I figured there'd be some interest.
You can post bugs here: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/inethack-beta-testers
In all honesty, I would LOVE to see a more detailed game guide for nethack. Like, 120-140 pages or so.
I have read the "A Guide to the Mazes of Menace" book but it leaves many details to be discovered the hard way.
Quite frankly, I would pay good money (20-30$) for an ebook I can print at home on my own and that covers the game in a sufficient detail.
Ideally, two 140-pages volumes (I don't really want to bring a brick with me).
I have no idea if this ever worked for public servers. But if you are willing to play locally, there is a ray of hope...
So a long time ago, I used to be like this. I eventually managed to get around the trouble of setting up an alt by setting the name option to 'player'. This lets a single user have access to multiple characters, by typing in the character's name.
I got out of the habit of playing multiple simultaneous characters for many years. Eventually I tried again on a new install ... it didn't work.
Setting the name to 'player' currently causes the game to crash. This is bug C360-8. It is "fixed"... in the next bug-fix release.
These days I do not care, since I play one character at a time. But this stuff might help you, if you are playing old versions of the game on local systems.
Mac player here, maybe this will help:
I use iTerm2 in 256 colour mode. I also use base16 for colour schemes (for vim and my terminal) and I quite like the base16-solarized-dark colour scheme for work and NetHack.
I play NetHack 3.6.1 installed via Homebrew or via telnet to nethack.alt.org
I can't help with your numpad problem, I've always just played with the Vi keys (yuhjklbn) and I promise it doesn't take very long to get used to...
If you don't want to rely on DOSBox and you are fine with the command-line version of nethack rather than the tile-based one (which I assume you are, given that you are running DOS and all), you can use an alternative terminal emulator which has a fullscreen mode. cmder is one example of such an emulator, and it works pretty well too. But do consider the fact that Nethack only uses a relatively small area of the terminal screen (80x25, I think, but not sure), so it may end up rather pointless running it fullscreen in the first place.
For the record: Windows 10 added fullscreen cmd.exe support back, so if you end up upgrading you can just use that.
From the puTTY changelog:
> NetHack keypad mode mapping (shift-with-)numeric-keypad to (shift-with-)hjklyubn. Unfortunately Shift only works when NumLock is off, which is a bit odd.
I didn't know about this until you asked, but I did some research and got it to work with my (ancient) copy of Windows. Warning: this is not for the faint of heart.. It involves using a program called the "GTK" version of SlashEM.
First you need to download and run this program: https://sourceforge.net/projects/gtk-win/ Which installs onto your computer the "GTK Runtime Environment" which GTK SlashEM uses.
Then, download and install the actual GTK SlashEM program into its own directory: https://sourceforge.net/projects/slashem/files/slashem-win32/0.0.7E7F3/GTK_SlashEM_0.0.7E7F3.exe/ After you do that, you need to go to that directory, open the "defaults.nh" file using a text editor and change the line that starts with "OPTIONS=tiles:" so it reads OPTIONS=tiles:Big 3D tiles
Then in that same directory you run "gtkhack.exe", which will prompt you to set up a link to your existing standard copy of SlashEM, wherever that is located. (Note that you need to be using SlashEM 0.0.7E7F3, and not any variants that may be floating around.) Then click the Connect button. If this all works, SlashEM will fire up and run using the 3D tiles. You will need to always use gtkhack.exe, not your original SlashEM program.
I personally didn't like the 3D tiles that much, because it makes things confusing to look at, but maybe you'll be happier with it. Good luck!
You can still read RGRN if Google groups doesn't work for you, http://bilious.alt.org/rgrn/
There are lots of small, isolated NetHack communities. A while ago I listed all I could find: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/582497-nethack/57425661
I assume this is bug C343-370.
> Travel (_) command can get stuck trying to plot a path past an interesting dungeon feature, for example, a trap or fountain.
Never mind, all I had to do was read from http://www.nethack.org/common/info.html
Can I use my old save files and bones files with the new version? Almost always no, but see the release information for each version to be sure. These files contain information from the internal structures of the game, and these almost always change between versions.
You cannot use save or bones files from any previous version with 3.6.0.
They started shoving adware at their users, the "DevShare" program. A lot of developers had a big problem with that.
I use the Nethack port by Gurr https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tbd.NetHack&hl=en_US
You can choose different skins In the menu, I think this in Undawnhack. Some skins make all of the unidfentified ojbects such as stones look the same, this one has different skins for luckstones, loadstones, ect.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tbd.NetHack
I have to shift-O, scroll down to compounds to set pickup types to $"?+!=\ at the start of each game.
But an intelligent person might be able to set defaults.
Tileset you choose by hitting menu.
Move 1 square by tapping the edge of the screen. Go to a location by clicking there. You'll mean the former and do the latter a couple of times. Sometimes it will kill you.
But interface problems are what they are.
Hard to say, although I got my first ascension on NAO my constant travel for work has me mostly playing on the android app[1]. I think this session spanned two plane rides and probably two nights of playing, so somewhere around 7-8 hours?

Personally, I just press k
on the on screen keyboard to kick, since I use the on-screen keyboard with number_pad:2
in my options. (Also, if I walk into a locked door, it automatically asks if I want to kick it down, if it's locked and I am able to kick.)
Hearse was easy to set up, it's right there in the options.
I'm using this version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tbd.NetHack
Hey, nice work. I've been looking for a DawnHack port for 3.6.0 for a while.
However, I've noticed some issues with the tileset, such as blurriness, artifacts and some tiles duplicated / out of order, which led me to tinker with DawnHack 3.4.3 and update it to the new tileset (since I'm no art person I had to take placeholders of new stuff from the Vanilla tileset).
Links to .bmp version of 16x16 and 32x32 (nearest neighbor resize of 16x16):
Dumplogs are in the 3.6.1 development code as per this commit. So if you dare being bleeding edge, you could just install the 3.6.1 development version from the sourceforge repository.
The IBMgraphics page on the wiki points to this post, an update for that patch.
I just got 1.3d to 'fit' in 880k. You can't save as it'll run out of space. And that isn't including any operating system. But slightly less than 1MB.
this is the best I can do. It's a raw disk image, 880kb. Just run 'jet' or any of the other minty looking things, and it'll jump right into nethack. when you exit it'll hang for 10 seconds or so as it cleans itself up.
I just re-uploaded it, after remembering to set Jet to occupy 2MB of RAM. It says 1.5MB is really the minimum it needs. It's cutting it really really close...
Pickaxe or force bolt. The axe is probably easier to get...
Nymphs respect Elbereth. Just start writing early when she moves for you, and remember that dust E gets smushed when fighting even one or two rounds, so check your Es! Otherwise, they are not much of a problem. I'm not sure if cancellation wands would stop them from stealing, but it's overkill in any case. Save those charges for making HW.
re screens: I have no idea of macs, but I assume you have a 'print screen/screen capture' button and some basic painting program, thats what I use. The reddit image host imgur is easy to use and requires no registration.
Edit: first result for googling "print screen on mac?" is this one
Anyone else having issues with defaults.nh? I looked for info and couldn't find any (perhaps I'm not too good-looking) - not only does the 3.6.3 seem to ignore my backed up defaults file, it doesn't seem to generate a new one when I moved the original out of the folder.
EDIT: Turns out I wasn't that good looking. Seems like they moved the options file and renamed it for some reason:
It almost never gets brought up, but in addition to the wiki, NetHack actually has an official instruction manual. That's how I got my start way back before the wiki was really a thing and it's still a great spoiler-free jumping off point today.
EDIT: I just reread it, and it's not 100% spoiler free, in that it includes a few hints that could technically be considered spoilers. But some version of it has been included since the very beginning and I think it is probably considered the baseline for spoiler-free information. After rereading, it's an even better resource than I remembered and probably tells you everything you could eve need to know if you want to get into the game in a spoiler-free or spoiler-light manner.
You're right. I should have realised that. That explains why it doesn't work; and what I should do to fix it. Now I suppose the new questions are why did it work in the previous version; and why does the guidebook use similar faulty regex as examples. here
autopickup_exception=">* cursed*"
Anyway, I'm not in a position to test what you're suggesting in the game; but I'm pretty confident that what you've said is correct. Thanks for the help.
I used to run Nethack 3.4.3 with tiles using the DOS version through DOSbox. Apparently Nethack 3.6.0 can still run on DOS. http://boxerapp.com is a nice implementation of DOSbox for Mac OS X. More info: https://nethackwiki.com/wiki/MS-DOS#Today
Microsoft is currently working on a proper terminal application, with all the juicy stuff, including DECgraphics support. Check it out here https://github.com/microsoft/terminal.
In general, you cannot use tiles in your terminal. Tiles are bitmap images, and those wont display like that in terminals usually (the newest iterm2 can do it though, for example). vt_tiledata doesn't include tiles itself, it just tells the display program which tiles to use. So you'd have to either use a GUI like ebonhack , or try to do some dirty hacking with aforementioned iterm2 capabilities. EDIT: BTW, the web terminal just reads the vt_tiledata, then uses CSS to lay an image over the tile.
I use iTerm2 (version 2.1.1) on OS X. In addition, the MotD function causes the game to freeze in iTerm2 (both work fine in the Apple Terminal application). The documentation can be found here.
Also, http://trac.nethack4.org/ is saying that I am forbidden from using it (I "don't have permission to access / on this server").
you totally can play locally, just install a nethack binary that works for your mac!
i installed nethack on my mac using homebrew (https://brew.sh/) - but that may be overkill for you. if you go that route, brew install nethack
for 3.6.0, and brew install nethack4
for nethack4, which I prefer if only for the console UI improvements. There's also unnethack, slashem etc.
i've almost always played locally and - other than getting bones files from other players - don't see much point in playing on a remote server. also bloody annoying if your network connection goes down or lags. the nice thing about nethack is that it's such low tech that it'll run locally on just about anything.
Well, where's my upvote? ^^
BTW, did you notice in my last game I followed your advice? Cause here is your tag, buddy, I sure remember you!
Edited for sidequestion: why does reddit eat my (for lack of a better word, and I obviously can't type the smybol itself) 'chinese smileys'?
With default tileset you mean the default 16x16 or the 32x32 one? The default 16x16 you get when you disable the tile_file option in your config file, although there are some tiles missing in there.
The slightly modified vanilla 32x32 not yet updated for UnNetHack 5 you can download at https://sourceforge.net/p/unnethack/code/HEAD/tree/trunk/tilesets/untiles32x.png
The list of the tile order is in this file: https://github.com/bhaak/nethack-tileset-composer/blob/master/lists/unnethack.txt
>And what about those online servers? Just clicking them opens the ancient and slow Windows email service.
You don't click on those - that's how you connect via an SSH in a terminal session. The quick and dirty way (as it sounds like you're on windows) would be to open a command prompt and type 'ssh ' <-- this is assuming you have windows 10, which has support for doing this.
u/Utangard - if you're able, join #hardfought on IRC (freenode.net) I'd be more than happy to help you get setup for online play. If I'm not readily available, there are plenty of folks who are and are willing to help.
The reason there isn't a windows binary is simply that there has never been a demand for one, until now. And I have compiled nethack for windows in over 10 years. I may have to have another go at it.
Sad face. :(
I've seen some budget/prosumer screen printers but I feel like I couldn't justify the purchase unless I decided to go into the custom t-shirt business. I'm pretty sure I would just fuck it up it anyway.
You didn't ask this question but thought you might be interested... Pathos is the essence of Nethack and you might find it a lot easier to play on your tablet. Google Play
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tbd.NetHack&hl=en&referrer=utm_source%3Dgoogle%26utm_medium%3Dorganic%26utm_term%3Dnethack+google+play&pcampaignid=APPU_1_RTD3VrTbCYuMjwPS85GoDw I believe. Definitely one of the android (un)nethack by gurr. One of my favorite android port interfaces for rls.
