This discussion is years old at this point; General consensus is that if you do this, you have to do it right, because you only get one shot. The devs are still working on many cool features, including a matchmaking and a progression system. You can see the roadmap here: https://trello.com/b/njrpasjl/ns2-roadmap
Note the "NS2 Rebrand" card under "Far Future". They are going to make sure the game is in the best state it could possibly be, and then... who knows? My money is on a rerelease or some kind of ultimate edition. I wouldn't expect this earlier than 2020, though.
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Athlon+64+X2+Dual+Core+6000%2B&id=88
Sorry man, your CPU is just way to slow to play this game. Minimum requirements is a Core 2 Duo which scores about 2000. Hell, my CPU is about a 4000 and I notice some chugging some times.
Yep, it's been in the works for a while now but they officially said it should be out in the relative future. Here is their Trello for if you're interested in seeing what they're doing, what they plan to do, etc; https://trello.com/b/uFv64kH6/ns2-development-team
A few months ago, the devs hired some members of the Community Development Team (CDT) to work on revitalizing the game. Over the past few months, the Paid Development Team (PDT) has released updates like implementing Discord to the site (allowing community members to talk freely with devs), new skins (Tundra marine skins so far), Steam achievements, converting DLC to inventory items and being able to sell them on Steam Community Market, fade/lerk hive challenge modes, and adding collectable item drops. A lot of these characteristics reflect other, more popular FPS games and I think it's about time that things like item drops and tradable items have been implemented. Some players have been wary of these ideas when they were raised, but I think they've been done tastefully enough to appeal to most players. All of these things and future updates should add up nicely to help bring in and retain more players.
You can see what the devs are working on in their Trello.
Yep, I filed a compatibility report on GitHub:
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/2234
It used to launch just fine using Wine before the engine switched over to 64-bit. I think it does something weird with memory allocation that Wine doesn't like, which is a bummer as I think performance would be much better vs. using the somewhat broken and outdated Linux/OpenGL binary.
I'm forgetting when, starting around the beginning of this year or late 2015, new players start at 0 hive score. Everybody who had played a game previous to that started at 1000. It looks like in the first pic, the player's first game was September, 2015, so they'd start with 1000.
If Hive 2.0 is ever unveiled (hehehe), I do believe they are working on normalizing hive ranks to address this: https://trello.com/c/Y3AUszh1/9-hive-2-0
NS2+ was bought by UWE and is now part and parcel of the vanilla package (kind of... it still acts like a mod, but it should never break)
Hive 2.0 is released, but it doesn't have separate scores for each team... but on the plus side, you cannot dodge ELO loss anymore.
Queuing with friends is being worked on at the moment and is referred to as "matchmaking" but is NOT the kind of match making you would normally expect out of a game.
For other interesting things that are happening at the moment, see this trello - https://trello.com/b/uFv64kH6/ns2-development-team Which shows you what is being worked on and considered for the future, ideas etc.
For a "roadmap" see this one - https://trello.com/b/njrpasjl/ns2-roadmap which is used to show a basic idea of the goals of the short and long term development of NS2.
I was curious if this would make the metacritic score jump so I checked it out. http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/natural-selection-2/critic-reviews
Not only has it not jumped, it has this little tidbit :
> his quotation and score are from the original GameSpot review. Metacritic, per long-standing site policy, only accepts a publication's first review/score for a given game.
If they did change the average, it should be around 83
The hitreg fix that was put in in b275 only fixed rare cases afaik. A good example of this rare cases was trying to shoot a skulk that is circle biting an rt.
More is to come like this. https://trello.com/c/TIyg0TRQ/456-hit-registration-de-sync-issue
I doubt this will fix it once and for all though, but I personally welcome any improvement.
I am only a fan, just like you. The reinforcement program, and shadow badges, were to help UWE recoup the cost of the making the reinforcement patch. UWE worked on ns2 longer than they should have from a fiscal business perspective.
It is not just "one computer." The build machine is a system of computers. This image shows a diagram of what the build machine/system consists of. http://i.imgur.com/Ei2Mxse.png
Subnatica has been taking off, and UWE has been putting out sometimes more than one update a day. Making games is what makes them money, sadly not ns2. So I personally would rather UWE stay profitable.
So now the build system is completed. The CDT has continued development. Now that the CDT has their own build system, they have a bit more flexibility in the development process. Look at this link to see all the cool stuff they have planned. https://trello.com/b/91ApENY6/ns2-cdt-development-tracker
What region are you in? A bit larger than 10 but I head up The Art of Warfare (TAW.net) natural selection 2 division, we are a 40 member strong, mostly european active community that have both casual and competitive players, we meet twice a week scheduled and do an internal tournament between our own members in groups of 6v6/7v7 for fun, at least 10 of us are usually on team speak throughout the week playing and chilling, and we have 15ish of our players partake in the ENSL competatives, if any of that sounds interesting I can get you on steam and you can try one of our meets and meet some of the guys before considering joining.
I, for one, hope that the NS2 community does not descend to League of Legends-like levels of vitriol and immaturity. A few pointers to make sure we avoid this:
If you're a seasoned NS2 veteran (of a beta, heh) then let new players command if you're in the mood for some FPS action. Don't scream at them to get out so you can "do it properly". Instruct them instead. It's also MUCH easier for new commanders to learn if they have a good team. Positive feedback loop and all that.
If you're new to the commander role, try starting out on servers before they're full. I personally consider anything less than 5v5 to be warmup games, while waiting for a server to fill up. Never jump out of the chair, even if other players are being dicks about it. You'll never learn by not doing, so get in there.
The more people that learn how to command, the more playstyles we'll see, the more tactics will emerge, the more fun we'll have.
Read the wiki, check out the latest techtree (at the bottom of the page, read through the other stuff as well =)) and have fun!
Savage games were fun, the new one i never played because it was $$$ and not something i wanted to invest in. Now that it has mixed reviews, i avoid games like that. They screwed people, just by reading the comments.
NS2 has possible plans to reintroduce it, https://trello.com/c/4OFITTiC/1-ns2-rebrand
This game should not be F2P. It will lose value and it goes on sale so frequently who can't shell out $6 bucks...
This game is awesome, there are a few of us sure but its the same people that play on the weekends and nights and we are "mostly" serious when playing. You can't get that in F2P games.
HOWTO for installing steam games to multiple drives on Windows. I use this to move games to/from my SSD, as I don't have enough space on it to have more than 2-3 games installed at one time. I installed steam on a non-SSD drive, and follow this procedure when I want to have a game installed on my SSD.
(needs NTFS-formatted file system on both drives)
First download and install this, which is a utility to allow you to create junctions, hard links, symbolic links, etc., from the Windows shell. There are also other ways to create junctions.
For a game that's already installed to c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\game, that you want to move to E:\Games:
You can now re-launch Steam.
This will create c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\game, which is a junction point that points to E:\Games\game. This means that steam and the game will both see the game as installed at the original location, but the files are actually stored on the E: drive.
If you want to move it back, delete the junction point in c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\game (will only delete the link, not the files), and move the folder back.
It's trivial to do this on Linux/Mac -- use `ln' to make a hard link instead of making a junction.
For a game that isn't installed yet, you can create the junction before installing the game (find out what folder in steamapps\common the game will install to) and install as normal.
The hive skills stats will be much improved with build 267 (coming out soon). The hope is that it'll be so improved that it'll make team balancing/shuffling a possibility. There was a Trello board card for it in the public Community Development Trello board found here: https://trello.com/b/91ApENY6/ns2-cdt-development-tracker but I can't find the exact card right now.
I do have a link to the google doc for the white paper that the stats will be based upon. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KMVLpPvEwFtoieTsTqeD8xBheFFEuK4PqjiyzGYSWbU
Hi all,
Here is the next installment of the manual:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6ND6VhU_QitdGp3Y2VGQVZCVm8/edit?usp=sharing
I have opened up comments as suggested by S4ntaClaws. I can't promise I can make every suggestion happen (proof reading aside - I will try), as this project has gotten bigger than I have anticipated.
Thanks for your support. Again, if you think a new player could do with something like this, please share this around.
As someone who recently set up a private server, I'd recommend using a linux vps (I use digitalocean) and LGSM.
LGSM makes the process way easier and is the only way I'd personally bother with. That said, you may not have experience working in linux, and paying for server hosting may not be an option you're interested in.
As for your issues with the server itself - I don't recall any direct connect function using IP... My recommendation is set a server password and have friends filter the server list by name.
I believe the team balance settings should be configurable in the base server config files. Maybe check the wiki, IIRC it should explain configuration somewhere. If that's not the ticket, maybe add the Shine mod to the server. That will let you configure everything to your hearts content, and IMO has far better documentation.
It's Wooza's Playground, I don't really play on any other server. It's an "arcade" server for 50 people, so the gameplay and strategy are different to the "normal" ones. The only problem with the server is it's only full on evenings in european timezones. Re toxicity, I can imagine if you join during a bad time, you could be extremely repulsed by some individuals :) But if I read the situation, they are just trying to be funny, not really being toxic.
Didn't they remove the need for another hive? I haven't keep up with the updates, but it's on the design document (5/5/11). Pardon my ignorance if this isn't the case.
good news is that first bug is a result of proton 4.11-10, check the github issue with details on how to roll back to 4.11-9 (or use a custom build like GloriousEggroll)
i get the minimize lockup too, havent heard of any work being done on it though i do feel like i'm experiencing it less often
It shouldn't happen, but it can for numerous of games and that. A solid solution is the use of this tool; http://dualmonitortool.sourceforge.net/swapscreen.html
Which allows you to snap your cursor to the limits of 1 monitor when you activate it by the hotkey press.
Basically the deluxe version is a way of voluntarily paying more to support the creators of the game. They created some nice things like art and music to compensate you a bit for the extra money, but it's basically a donation.
So the is no point discussing if this is worth it. If you want the game for the best possible price wait for a sale, they come around every few months. If you want to support the indie studio that made this game, buy deluxe or participate in the reinforced program [1]. In fact, many people like this game so much they decided to donate over 1/4 of a million dollars to enable UWE to continue support for it.
A minidump would imply a blue screen crash. An application is unlikely to cause that problem on it's own. Generally drivers or system hardware cause that. Do you have any idea what the error code is? Are you able to read the code using a tool like BlueScreenView ( http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html )? It may give you some clues
It's a game engine like Source, Frostbite, Spark, etc. that tends to cater to smaller development teams and independent studios, and as such we have seen many smaller games released on Unity lately.
>Kudos to unknown worlds, especially for being on top of NS2
Yeah, kudos to the guys at unknown worlds for all their hard work /s
I think it might be difficult to find a team when you are brand new to the team. The only exception I can think of is TAW (The Art of Warfare). Their clan (or community as they like to call it) works a bit differently than most others and I think they accept anyone that wants to join. Being in the clan does not necessarily mean that you have to be on one of their competitive teams. They have regular practice sessions. The only caveat is that they are EU based and timezones might make things difficult.
As for Pugs, you are more than welcome to play in them. I once lost to a team that had a fresh player. He played a support role and I think the other players helped him with what to do. The caveat on this one is that the skill level tends to be fairly high and you will probably have difficulty getting kills.
Good luck & have fun!
I think the The Art of Warfare (TAW) public servers are pritty good, i believe they are 7v7 tho.. they ar emarked as rookie friendly, but the amount of rookies in there is low and the TAW guys are really friendly
Good enough lapel mics are not expensive - I don't understand how people don't have microphones!?
I was thinking that a 1GB video card is pretty good - then I clicked on that link and wow. How can it under perform by that much?
Hmm it looks like it has an overheating problem from the Amazon reviews: http://www.amazon.com/VisionTek-Radeon-Express-Graphics-900241/dp/B001B4BW74
"The result of this is that the card will idle at 90 celcius, and go over 100 celcius at load (which is not good, trust me). The problem applies to all 4850's and 4870's regardless of manufacturer. Luckily there is an easy way to up the speed of the fan (I set it to 40%, and I now idle at 60 celcius, load at 70) to get the proper cooling. I don't however think that the problem has gone away, as there is no reason a fan should have to spin at a constant 40% speed (which will wear out the fan eventually) to achieve the proper cooling. The 4850 needs to slow it's clock speed when not in use to reduce heat (the speed of the GPU and Ram) which it currently does, but not enough"
"As for performance, I can now play Crysis on High at 1080p without the framerate ever dipping to unplayable rates (something that I couldn't even come close to doing with my old 7900GT). Basically, if Crysis will run at 1080p, any other game on the market will, so that should give you some idea of the performance of this card (for an in-depth look, I suggest googling for "4850 benchmarks")"
My advice/opinion - stick with nvidia they are more pricey than ATI cards but I have not had any major issues and read reviews on sites like Amazon.
