Ugh, okay.
Look, while autoheal can be detrimental to gameplay at times it isn't inherently evil. What is way more important is how these features are implemented.
It is inherently evil not to have quicksaving though, if you're going to tout yourself as a PC game at least act like one beyond silly gripes certain people have regarding gameplay.
Also OP, if you like the sound of this have you checked out Natural Selection 2? It's an indie shooter on steam now, and it does asymmetrical warfare very well. Only drawback is it is poorly optimized at the moment, but that can be improved. It's still a fantastic game. Unless aliens having regenerating health is REALLY a deal breaker for you.
you should try out Natural Selection then. The first one was a mod of Half Life 1, and is kinda dead server wise, but number 2 is in development. The only problem is that its been in development for goddamn forever, and while there is a beta out, its nowhere near a finished product.
I'm been holding off on doing this because it feels like a takeover but, since I'm tired of seeing all these repeated threads over this game and no threads about Natural Selection 2, here goes.
NS2 is also an upcoming title from and indie company, but it has innovation that clearly stated and it already has a running multiplayer beta. It's mixed RTS with FPS. You can play as the Aliens which have several different classes. This game also deserves some attention. I know I should make a separate thread and I will. But for know that was my little rant.
Don't get me wrong I think IM is cool and think both companies deserve support just felt that on reddit the support is kind of one sided.
I didn't watch the entirety of the Let's Play, but I believe I understand the relative genre you're aiming at.
Have a look at Natural Selection 2 if you haven't already heard of it. The game has an in-client matchmaking, and requires loads of teamwork to succeed.
Good luck either way!
Gameplay is intense, teamwork is rewarded, mistakes are exploitable, and comebacks are both hard-fought and gratifying.
~~...Unless you're in the UK, I hear the Euro servers are a bit empty :(~~
Edit: I may have been wrong about that, just found this steam group that appears to be pretty healthy ;)
There's obviously Natural Selection 2, but this is more multiplayer focused where one guy is commander and other players are the units which you might not be searching for. Another multiplayer RTS/FPS hybrid that works like NS2 is also Savage XR.
Then there is Universum: War Front which was kickstarted. It might be more what you look for, it's not out yet though.
I dont know exactly what you mean comparing it to Space Marine, IMO very different games.
Something i think will be very similar is Natural Selection 2. its not out yet but the original was a really great mod.
The first thing that comes to mind that has multiplayer is BF4's commander mode. I'm not sure if you can easily play the same match together in commander mode though.
EDIT: http://www.naturalselection2.com
Also nuclear dawn.
What you described is almost exactly what Savage (Savage 2) and Natural Selection are.
Im currently in summer break so id be able to host whenever im needed. id be down to host different games than normal like civ, the ship, or out there games like toribash or Natural selection 2
Take a look at how the skulk does this in Natural Selection 2. I've found this to be a very intuitive implementation of being able to move on walls and ceilings.
Edit: This is in 3D, not 2D space, but the basics are pretty much the same.
I think a good game to buy would be Natural Selection 2. Natural Selection 2 is a fun game that I picked up yesterday and have already played for 8 hours.
It's not a beta. You get the beta with it as well as access to the complete game. The game is updated all the time and has a release date of this year. It's pretty much a finished product. I liken it to the way dota 2 is an unreleased game.
You claim to be a fan, but have you checked up on the latest stuff here?
Why do marketing people always have to come up with impudent lies like this: >Nuclear Dawn is the first game to offer a full FPS and RTS experience, within a single gameplay model, without crippling or diluting either side of the game.
(from the "Overview" section of the game's official homepage)
This looks like an interesting game, but: whats wrong with giving respect to a game's ancestors (be it by not telling bullshit and staying humble where advised)?
Having played games like NS1/NS2 and Empires Mod, statements like that just make me angry!
Pre-order Natural Selection 2 and get instant access to the closed beta through Steam: http://www.naturalselection2.com/buy
Bunch of servers are up, the game is stable and is one of the funner games I've played in years. Has a friendly cooperative vibe in public games due to the small community so far, and gets very competetive if both teams know what they're doing.
So pre-purchase NS2, download the closed beta through Steam (only 10,000 beta spots) and let's enjoy this game before its even out! They have weekly updates and are one of the best development teams out there in terms of listening, fixing bugs fast, and keeping stuff fun and balanced.
Thanks, hopefully you guys enjoy this game as much as I am (got more hours in this games alpha/beta then I do in most COD games).
A note for everyone interested in playing. You can go on their website http://www.naturalselection2.com/buy and buy the game and have access to the beta instantly. Remember the UWE team is only about 8 or so people.
Natural Selection has been out for years and is the same FPS + RTS concept. The sequel is going to be out in a year or two. Not to steal this game's thunder; I'm just letting people know. I only found out about it recently, and it's far past the prototype stages that this game appears to be in.
There was no intermediary store. Clicking "buy" on the Natural Selection 2 page took you directly to Paypal: https://web.archive.org/web/20110819105213/http://www.naturalselection2.com/buy
And Paypal does pass the chargebacks to the merchant, they operate on too thin of a margin to not do that.
I think that Natural Selection 2 would be a good thing to try.
The gameplay can be fast-pasted with a lot of tension, with aliens jumping out of vents and swarming your base. In it you can play either as the marines who fight several types of aliens or as the aliens themselves (which for each of them has its own set of entirely different gameplay style). In this game, the choice is your's!
NS2 is definitely one of my most favourite games on PC, and I am definitely a fan of the developers, after I have played it. (Just, once you get through the sharp learning curve [which is quite short, and can easily be fun, as it was for me :) ], you'll be having great fun, healing Onoses and shotgunning Lerks!) :D

Quite the Rebel lineup you got there! But the Decimator can take them...
2/3 of my current favourite Sci-Fi games. The third would be Natural Selection 2, maybe somebody is interested (It's on sale on Steam..)
Basically the deluxe version is a way of voluntarily paying more to support the creators of the game. They created some nice things like art and music to compensate you a bit for the extra money, but it's basically a donation.
So the is no point discussing if this is worth it. If you want the game for the best possible price wait for a sale, they come around every few months. If you want to support the indie studio that made this game, buy deluxe or participate in the reinforced program [1]. In fact, many people like this game so much they decided to donate over 1/4 of a million dollars to enable UWE to continue support for it.
I don't really know much about this sort of stuff, I'm more of a console guy so I'll keep my main gaming over there. I just want to be able to play a game like Smite or Natural Selection 2 with the highest settings and have 60+fps.
I would be also playing games that are exclusive for Xbox/PC, like Titanfall. I think I could spend up to $900.
Well a bit offtopic, but if you want to enjoy it once again, there is NS2 just before the release. I've been enjoyng the beta for last couple weeks and its awesome.
It was a Half-Life mod (like Counter Strike was)
It was a RTS/FPS Hybrid. Marines vs Aliens. Marines had a commander who saw everything top down. He could issue build commands (placing a shadow structure) and the other players would have to go build it.
Aliens had no commander but they did have a unit type responsible for building things.
Sequel is in beta and has been something like 10 years in the making. http://www.naturalselection2.com/
Edit: It'd start with a little linux server. Get something like a website, or game server up and running on it. Make sure it has 2 network cards in it. Figure out how to turn it into a router and put it between yourself and your current router while you play with configurations. Once you're confident that it works well as a router, replace your existing router with it.
Edit2: If your current system has Windows 7 on it, look up some of the things you can do with Powershell. It blew my mind when someone showed me I could do "cd HKLM:/" to get into the registry and edit things.
I had a dream where I was a marine in Natural Selection. An alien bit me, and so I asked a squad member to off me. First time I died in first person in a dream.
It has been done before!
Empires Mod has been around for years, though i always had trouble finding a good server.
I am really saving money for a new computer to be able to play Natural Selection 2. It's the game i've been waiting for for years. NS1 is still a good game, but the community is dwindling. The devs switched from the source engine to their very own engine which has spectacular lighting and dynamic shadows. The game is currently in open beta with regular updates and it even has its own subreddit!
Maybe give Natural Selection 2 a try; it's a mashup of RTS and FPS. Both teams have structures which allow players to jump into an overhead view and construct buildings, control drone units, and give orders to other players. I logged many an hour in the original HL1 mod, and I've been looking forward to this one for a long time.
