It's a total cluster fuck out there.
I did a piece on it for the last issue of Transworld Surf. I'm not sure who owns the rights to it at this point, but you can read the text here.
EDIT: This was the rough edit, can't find the final. I'm aware of the typos.
Yes. Its 100+ in the entirety of costal SoCal, from Ventura to San Diego. It's like we all got dropped into Arizona, absolutely insane. But hey, offshore winds!

https://www.amazon.com/Casio-W800H-1AV-Classic-Sport-Watch/dp/B001AWZDA4 Smash it into walls with my gangly arms, toss it into the bottom of my bag, surf consistently, it's been indestructible for me so far. Super nice to know what time it is out on the water. And if i break it... 12 bucks and I get a new one.
I usually Put a few squirts of this in my bag before and after every sesh, especially after a particularly rough one when I’m feeling sore
Don't use that. It will melt your board.
This is what you use to repair soft tops. But I don't think it will work well in this case.
I'd give this stuff a shot. But, really, the board's eventually gonna get waterlogged and ruined no matter what you do.
In the future you might want to refrain from taking bites out of your surfboards, you fucking weirdo.
Yes, look at the images on the 1 star review for the FCS freedom leash on amazon. (https://www.amazon.com/FCS-Freedom-Leash-Black-6ft0in/dp/B07FDCTLVJ/ref=sr\_1\_2?dchild=1&keywords=fcs%2Bfreedom%2Bleash&qid=1622998032&sr=8-2&th=1&psc=1)
There's a detailed picture and video of the leash sliced inside the tail of the surfboard.
The freedom leash material can be quite dangerous if it wraps around a leg or an arm on 4'+ surf.
This is northern baja. The further south you go, the less of a crowd you'll run into. If you're serious about it, buy this book Amazon Link. Take notes on the page about the swell direction and size/period when you score so you know what to look for in the future. It'll take years to start consistently scoring, but it's worth it.
Tons of my friends have killed themselves. I'll throw Resurface Into this list. They surf my local all the time and the dude with no legs and half an arm rips harder than half the kooks in the lineup.
I saw the pic and thought exactly the same thing, even though I had already heard about the guy. Something about the colors makes the dude pop out, like he had been shopped in. Anyhow, his instagram has the gopro clip this shot was taken from: https://instagram.com/p/zBC316ImNy/?taken-by=mikecoots
Yeah it was.
He's giving the board away on instagram now, which makes it even better.
>Best pic on Freddy's Rock wins a surfboard. Make sure to #freddysrock I'll pick a winner after the award ceremony & hand the winner a board shortly after. Must be present to win. So make a day out of it at the Quiky Pro. Get creative 😃 @stephenisbelly & @snaketales are winning so far.
>Judging criteria - speed, power & flow. I believe I ticked all the boxes, not to mention innovation. Under scored?? I think so. Haha. #areyounotentertained #bestjobieverhad #thisissnapper
I seriously can't wait to watch the final day. The whole thing has been such an awesome train wreck.
Stand like a sprinter getting ready for takeoff. hands on opposite sides of the stringer. face forward. back knee pointed inward. fix it now, or poop stance stays for life. Try to learn on a longboard. You'll have a lot more fun and will get better faster.
Yes. The inner foam would become exposed and allow water to “sponge” it’s way into the board. It would gradually start rotting and becoming water logged and heavy.
If the board has removable fins there are locks you can attach to the fin box. Or you can get a couple of these tightening cable locks and attach them tightly on each side of the wide spot while connected to a longer cable lock so that they cannot be slid off.

Hey y'all I've been working for a while on an Android app to log your sessions. It allows you to record details about the swell/wind/tide and then compare and contrast the data for each spot. I posted on here a while back buts it's come along way since then.
Check it out and please rate/review it and share with your friends. Any feedback is welcome. Surf Log
Thanks
It's hard to do for some of us. I know it's difficult for me.
So, like an addict, we've gotta fake it 'til we make it.
Smile, nod, FORD; do what it takes to build relationships.
I know that a lot of people on here are weirdos, like I am. It seems so fake, so much like manipulation to pretend you care about strangers. But it works.
And, if you keep it up, it changes your world view. Because everything is subjective. The objective will always remain out of reach.
If you pretend to care you eventually do. I promise.
I bought a key lock that I hang from the handle of my car. So far so good. I haven't had any problems with people trying to pick it and get the keys (honestly since I go dawn patrol-ish in a relatively high visibility area, I don't think anyone bothers). It changed my surfing life! I initially would just take my keys, slippers, and towel out to the beach and hoped no one would go poking through it. Now I only need to take myself, my board, and slippers (to deal with the walk back).
I use liquid bandage then add something as a buffer for chaffing depending on where the wound is (bootie, bandage + tape, wetsuit).
It's specifically designed for use in the bed of a truck, got it off of Amazon, here's the link, happy camping brother 🤙🤙: NAPIER Backroadz Full Size Regular Bed Truck Tent, 6-Feet 5-Inch, Green/Beige/Grey https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ASYOTKU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_UC6rfZVqpjD24
I started wearing them last year - aside from the long term protection against surfers ear, I find I feel warmer with them in. I'll even wear them in warm water no to prevent water in my ear, which is annoying.
There are a lot of expensive ones out there but the JBL ones on amazon (or some surf shops) work great and are like 1/4 the cost
I'd focus on the difference between 'Hawaiian' (as in from Hawaii) and Hawaiian (as in Native Hawaiian), the ways in which they are associated with surfing and how they relate to cultural appropriation.
Like aloha shirts are 'Hawaiian' but not Hawaiian.
Hula was more or less banned. Modern hula is not what the Native Hawaiians did. But hula is heavily associated with Hawaii, and which is in turn heavily associated with surfing.
Hula, like surfing and the native Hawaiian language, was actively suppressed by missionaries, ie white people, ie the same people who now travel here to get a taste of a culture that no longer really exists. Because white people actively tried to erase it.
Pineapples are heavily associated with Hawaii, but are not native and heavily contributed to the plantation system which lead to land theft and slavery-like conditions for laborers.
Be sure to mention the alaia fad a few years back. That was an interesting side note in surf history.
You could also focus on the evolution of equipment. Modern surfing barely resembles the early stuff, performance and equipment-wise. Is that cultural appropriation or a natural evolution of a sport?
Some sources:
In Mark Twain's Roughing It he goes to Hawaii. It's a great read, a lot of it is pretty tongue in cheek, but you could definitely snatch some quotes regarding white perceptions of Hawaiian culture. Some of which still existed back then.
Also, try hitting up Matt Warshaw. He knows more about surfing than any other human alive. If you like I could do a little email introduction between you two.
My two cents- Look for an 8' Froth Boardworks on Amazon. Has a soft top wrapped over a glassed EPS foam core, catches everything, rides nearly as good as a PU but much more forgiving, IMO. Also, it uses Futures fin boxes so you can upgrade to higher quality fins later if you want. Under $400 right now and offered at discounted price around $200-$300 every so often, should be free shipping as well. Good luck!
I've been using this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0011G1F8S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_ezDeGbDKXZPSR?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 for over a year and it works super well for me and hasn't affected my ~3 year old xcel 3/2 at all. Definitely cuts down the drying time quite a bit. It doesn't have a heating element so I can't comment on that. It's just a simple PC case fan creating the airflow.
A cheap Casio. Either that or an Apple Watch if you're willing to pay for all the tech. Nothing in between.
I bought a couple of fancy expensive tide watches, they are a pain in the ass to set up the tides or even simply change the time when DST happens. The smartphone has spoiled us and really I don't need to know the tide when I'm in the water or a timer. The biggest kicker for me is that the battery will die in a few months and after you replace it it won't be waterproof anymore and the watch will die. So I stick to cheap Casio's when I need to get out at a specific time.
Just for surfboards??
Pretty simple, get some padding and tie downs. $40 and you're done

Hi, Kinesiology student here. I am very interested in strength and conditioning, and of course, surf specific workouts. I found this program designed by two very experienced CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists) in my university's research databases. I know it says for females, but there is literally no difference on what gender you are in order for the program to be useful.
The program itself follows the progressive overload principle, and is a bit to read through. However, I feel like the list of exercises covers a wide variety of movements needed to become a strong, flexible, and balanced surfer. Enjoy and train hard!
Man up and learn Python - it's much easier than you might think.
If you want to use that library to push data into your google sheet, you'll basically need to follow a process like this (this is not the way I'd write it, but the easiest thing I could think of for you to reproduce):
You won't write code that looks good, but you'll learn a bit by doing this. Python is useful - if you put the time in, you'll probably find other ways to use it too. PM me if you get stuck.
turn back towards the curl when you start to outrun the wave, and then put yourself back in the pocket. trial and error. this should give your some idea.

Richie Vass at 2:58 is by far the heaviest rag dolling I've ever seen in my life. That man is a champion for taking such beatings at the place
It's okay, the restaurant is pretty good (the stuffed calamari is the bomb!).
If you can find a few people to split a large place you should check out Las Gaviotas. It's in the same general area and has a great little reef out front.

If you're ok with spending more for a Wavestorm than normal, go to Amazon and check out the color selection they have there.
I'm seriously considering this one . It's so cute.
As others are saying, use hot glue. But if you can, get some craft foam like this and shove as much as you can in the crack before glueing. And after you put the glue on put masking tape over it so it’ll stay flat and won’t bubble up unevenly.
I wanna say I completely agree with you as long as you use as full frame camera. I always used ~30mm (stock 18-55mm lens) on a crop sensor for down the line/sitting inside. 8mm for barrels shots. All shot in this puppy.
I got these and they work really well. I think they're knock off surfears, I can hear way better than I could with docs. They don't come with a leash but I just tied them together with some thick 30 lb monofilament fishing line, they have a little hole that it fits through perfectly.
I wear them all the time now, warm or cold. I got a bad infection this past winter that I couldn't shake and now water gets trapped in my ear even when its warm. I am not really bothered by them. Apart from protection, I think they make me feel a lot warmer too.
A good choice is the JBL ones on amazon

Hmm, fiberglass looks compromised enough that it needs to be removed. I can see foam, so applying resin only will be a temporary fix until this area takes another hit and will open right back up. Really need some fresh glass to fix that.
I would highly suggest removing all that bad glass, sanding the area around the edges very well and applying at least 2 layers of fiberglass, with resin and QCell (not sure what to suggest for the color, maybe food dye?). If you're not up to the task I would take it to a local shaper for repair. You could probably get by with a small piece of glass to go over that exposed piece of foam, AFTER you soak that area with resin to soak into all those cracks. But I would still suggest a much more permanent fix.
As keeldude was suggesting, cheap paint brushes (think paint by number size) are really great for surfboard repairs. The only issue is the bristles tend to fall out easier with the cheap brushes. Ace Hardware is a good place to get your brushes, tape, sanding paper, anything really other than the fiberglass, resin and qcell.
You can actually get small little repair kits off Amazon that are pretty good value if you have small repairs. Ding All stuff is pretty cheap and works well.
I'm not a ding all rep!

If you see the video the footage is from it's not that bad.
Also, waves like this are weird- they will break pretty close to the rocks but because the energy refracts and pushes further and gets stronger as the wave wraps around the point- if you fall the energy doesn't push you over the rocks it pushes you out and down the point.
I thought Thai Stick was also good. It’s mostly about the early pot trade though. https://www.amazon.com/Thai-Stick-Surfers-Scammers-Marijuana/dp/0231161352/ref=nodl_?dplnkId=4c67b13f-d52c-4b44-be37-2e847506e076

Eh, never seems to be great deals during the times I've been to the Redondo location.
MORE than happy with my $189 Ho Stevie 4/3 that just got released. Also supports a local San Diego surfer dude selling cool beach swag!

Nope. Those are $180 new. You can find them used at consignment stores; I got one at play it again sports in PV for $100 even.
He probably just ordered a ton from China got his logo screened on, and is trying to flip 'em for a buck.
They're most likely solid fins, he's just marking them the fuck up and trying to come up on people who don't know any better.
I've never surfed in India but wunderground has never led me astray before for wind forecasting: https://www.wunderground.com/q/zmw:00000.21.43314 That will at least get you started. It looks onshore but its from the Northwest, I'd be willing to bet you'd be able to find something protected if you look.
https://www.instagram.com/p/9FLSLdp601/ This is a fun little wave that occasionally comes alive inside the local inlet. It's a super slabby tube that breaks right off the jetty that mushes out, then rolls into a fast inside section around a big sharp rock. Unfortunately I don't think there is a video of the spot, and that is the only picture I know of.
Just got back from the Ments on boat trip in mid October. Haze caused by the Indo fires was a major issue, because El Nino had suppressed the rain but we had a great time any way. If they figure out the fire situation then Oct. is the later part of the wave season and it is a good time to go. The crowds are way less intense, although crowds are a reality in indonesia even in the Mentawai these days. if you stay at a land camp (of which there are many) make sure it's close to more than one wave because 8 boats will show up and you'll have no where to go to escape. Still happy to get great shacks - feel free to ask any questions I'll be happy to answer, I have no interests or bias just some experience in the islands.

Ehhhh. https://www.similarweb.com/website/surfline.com Bout 3 million visitors per month? But, 145,000 * 30 = 4350000
Just from the crazy over estimate numbers, they'd need at least another 1.3 mil views per month.
No problem! I couldn't see any sort of client side framework (totally fine). If/when you feel like you want to bring a JS framework in, I highly recommend: https://nextjs.org/ (built on React -- I use this at serious scale, it's great) and gives you Server Side Rendering and a ton of performance out of the box (I bet it would cut your total page load bandwidth in half before you even thought about responsive images).
You can very easily use Next.js in tandem with https://www.netlify.com/ (from the same company) which makes it super easy to deploy and manage production environments for small projects such as this giving you lots of room to grow and worry less about DevOps.
Just get the Maverick and use one of these, no need for a something bigger
or this
If you get the pickup, you could use something like this with pool noodle padding zip tied on the bars

Not sure how well it works but I came across this on Amazon the other day. It's a leg pouch that would totally fit under a wetsuit.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B086N3YNHQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_SW37D0032GTAYSWS2Z3G
If the link doesn't work go to Amazon and search for:
DRFT Waterproof Leg Ankle Pouch
I've seen and read good things about CBC. They also use fin boxes that take FCS1 on that link you have. I'd probably look for a plug that attaches the leash without using the nylon strap you see on the Vision.
I'd recommend other stuff but I don't think you have access to them or they're expensive. I'd go CBC and buy something like this
I think it's worth spending the extra on the CBC because a 7' foamie is still plenty of fun and being able to change fins out or maybe even put on some twins would be fun as hell.
I found this book really helpful for understanding how waves form and move, how wind works, bathymetry, etc:
Surf Science: An Introduction To Waves For Surfing https://www.amazon.com/dp/0824828917/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_A1WY1RMVNYYW9SQ6XB7R
This one is the starting point, and then I added a few items like an ample supply of butterfly bandages, gauze pads, tape, some skin glue, and a skin stapler.
I've used it on myself once or twice and on others maybe half a dozen times. Thankfully, I haven't had to use the stapler though.
I don't use padded racks but I guess that would be super helpful haha. I got these surfboard tie downs on Amazon.. idk if it'll let me post a link but these are legit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E9MLIT6?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I had some'a that on one of my boards and fixed it very easily with https://www.amazon.com/Ding-All-Epoxy-Repair-Kit/dp/B002UZP864
Just follow the instructions--sand it down, so it's even, apply the epoxy solution, and you should be good. The only thing that might be concerning is if that crack near the leash loop goes too deep, and much water got in... But honestly, I think if you epoxy it you should be good for a while!
I've tried a few and these are my favorites so far:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RPFDJYK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
There's a little hole in the rubber part that I run thick monofilament fishing line through as a leash. I can hear fine with them and they're wayyyy more comfortable that docs for me, zero complaints so far. Surfears are probably nicer, but I've already left 2 pairs of cheap ones on top of my truck. Don't think I could live with myself if they were $60.
Get one of these and you can get a third attachment point from the front of the car and to the leash string. I would use something with some elasticity too. Should keep it more secured. You could also get a board bag and fashion attachment points into the bag with a grommeting tool. Otherwise buy a real roof rack and dont worry about much
Grabber Tool I keep one of these in my truck too. It feels a little hokey when you're doing it but when you're done it feels great that you picked up a bag of trash. Try to do it every time I go to the beach or on a walk in nature. It's therapeutic too, kinda zen like when you get in the zone of picking up the little pieces of plastic. Highly recommend. Added bonus, little old ladies give you a thumbs up on the regular and lots of people say "thank you" and it feels nice. Keep that post surf feel-good high going.
Thanks man, and yeah that dude flyin around is something else. I'm still torn if I hate him or am just jealous. For the camera, yeah it's all shot on my pixel using a spotting scope with a phone attachment. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KFTV8WM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_L8WYFbHKGHSVJ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 This is what I have
I've been using these ones, I think they're similar to surfears, I really like them so far. No chance I'd pay $50 for the real ones, I already left a pair of cheap ones on top of my car. These have a little hole in them that you can thread mono fishing line through to make a leash.

Amazon sells them for $150, but if you're in Long Island and can get someone to take you, Costco sells them as well.
What /u/ribwrecker said about the foam fish is also a good idea, I've been thinking about getting this one but there are a ton of options out there.
It's online and immediate. It's a bunch of monkey's banging keyboards, throwing shit at a wall and hoping it sticks - as far as news and feeding the hungry baby that is the internet.
And then, there's the stuff we put a lot of time and energy into, the longform stories, interviews and films, Stab High, etc. These are our passion projects. We love longform, and we do do a lot of it but the nature of the internet is here today, gone tomorrow. We stopped doing Quarterly Mags a year ago because, unfortunately, it was no longer a sustainable source of income. Although, we have something for your coffee table in the works this year.
Surfing on hallucinogens is very fun. And yes.
Get a hide a key box, put a spare in it, and stick it somewhere in the nether regions of your vehicle. My proudest moment, really.
Six bucks on Amazon, buy one.
Really? I've bought all my sun protection in amazon.es...
It's not easy to find sun protection creams with zinc here in spain outside amazon/internet (or at least in my city). For the face i just use sun zapper zinc sticks or this one, that's made in Spain and doesn't harm the reefs: https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B076H2QS4M/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=A2PWU7JGS8BTLP&psc=1
it's expensive but i've used it during a surf camp and it saved my face from sun burn.
I take a mix of vitamins and minerals (Mg, C vit, zinc, vit B complex, etc) for sport reasons (former uni swimmer) or a multi, so I'm covered. i also try to eat tons of fruits and veggies and so (I actually eat quite healthy).
For the head, I've bought a cheap cap and I'm going to put it a paracord like this: https://cdn.watersportsoutlet.com/images/2019%20Rip%20Curl%20Wetty%20Surf%20Cap%20Grey%20CCAOS1.jpg
If any European knows of any sunscreen brand or something that contains zinc, it's water resistant and fluid enough to apply it on my legs just let me know. American brands like sunbum or waxhead are expensive and difficult to find in Spain.
read this book.

it has a ton of tips about eating, work outs, paddle techniques, how to read swells, animals, injuries, what you should always have near by etc.
Yea, it works pretty well. Last year I used some on my 4/3 cause it was leaking in a few spots. Used the aquaseal to get the seams back together then the tape over that to make sure it wouldn’t come apart. Hope that helps
pick up a copy of this. the last half of that book consists of about 20 custom shaped boards. lucky for you, the author used 5'8" 140lbs, intermediate to advanced level, as the requirement for the shapers to follow.

Sticky Bumps SOFTBOARD Wax - 6 Pack (Choose Temperature) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XH8CF35/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ztehFbG84P8MW
There’s vids on how to use the grater, make sure you press the bumps into the foam and smear just a tad to get them to stick. Really upped my confidence in the water.
Snapped my first fin, albeit the FCS G5's are the crappy plastic stock fins that came w/ my board. I have no clue how it snapped off in yesterdays session as I'm still a beginner trying to master the bottom turn, so it's not as if I was pushing the board hard. I understand that you get what you pay for, but this'll suck paying a lot of money just to have it bust again. With this fin system, FCS I, will I be busting fins often just because the engineering of this setup is made to put too much pressure on the two tabs that connect it to the board? I ordered me some UP Surf fins on Amazon, but I'm thinking that I could be in the same boat after a few sessions. Any suggestions?

I'm mostly a non-fiction/business/political junkie so my reqs may not fit many. Most recently:

Edit: forgot - read Trust Me I'm Lying finally a few months ago. Great read.
"Surf cam" is just a term for a webcam pointed at a surf spot.
If you mean a waterproof action camera, this U$70 has a lot of positive reviews. I personally use a Sony.
A changing bag like this. It’s a nice upgrade from an ikea bag (or nothing). Super handy for carrying your wetsuit to the shower/storing in car etc.
Cheap but efficient game changer.
I use them for motorcycle riding but they should also work for surfing. Super comfy and never fall out, and custom molded. Only 12 bucks too so not a huge risk
I found this on their store, it has the design right in the middle: https://www.amazon.com/Take-Beaches-Surfing-Alien-T-Shirt/dp/B07TWHPJM3/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1671028818&refinements=p_4%3AMerch+Originals+-+Aliens&s=apparel&sr=1-1
I'm scare of OPs links after all these scam posts, but I like the design. Looks like the same design is being sold on Amazon by the brand "Merch Originals - Aliens," with most/all items being Sold By and Shipped By Amazon. I haven't found the shirt with the logo right in the middle like that, but here are a few others:
I have this roof rack and it goes on my smooth roof, it's actually really great
I just found it in a store. Whatever you pick it needs to have a hard brim in front. I've been using a hat so long it feels weird to not wear it. Helps with keeping water out of eyes in waves too.
I second the cheap casio watch. They're bulletproof. I had a F105W that's apparently no longer available.
Something like this https://smile.amazon.com/Casio-F91W-1-Classic-Resin-Digital/dp/B000GAWSDG/
Just wanted to say I really appreciate this post and it nice to see you’re trying to make a positive change! After reading the comments I realise that guys still face a lot of discrimination and toxic masculinity when it comes to mental health issues.
For me I’m surfing for over 10+ years now and due to undiagnosed ADHD and a big neurological health issues had some bad depressive episodes. We don’t get consistent waves where I live and it’s also cold af, but getting to surf or looking forward to surf kept me sane during difficult times. Undiagnosed and untreated ADHD manifested as 24/7 chatter and worries inside my mind. Hitting the ocean and sitting in the line-up timing your next wave where the only times the chattering stops. Imo surfing is a lot like mindfulness. (Sam Bleakley wrote this neat little book about mindfulness and surfing)
I don't know why people are giving you shit. Booties are so much easier to take on and off with socks on.
I use these, they have separate toes and are a wool/synthetic blend that do well in the water:

I just put a towel on my seat.
I take the key off the fob and place the fob in this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B092PQQ5J5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Then i take the key with me. I make sure no one sees me putting my fob in there. I also have a magnet under the car with a copy of the key just in case I lose it in the water I can still get into my car.
