The article didn't go into the details. Anyone that previously paid automatically gets the "premium" upgrade. You can view more details about it here:

Either way, there's always a premium for being a first adopter in any market. I'm still waiting for GT5 to drop in price :(
GW2 will be a good buy, comes out on the 25 if you prepurchase (28th if you don't) /r/guildwars2 is also a great community, they'll get you up to speed on the game before it comes out.
If you need something before that you could try:
WOW's free to play (good if you haven't rolled a certain race before)
I wish I could suggest more but there's just not much out there that's F2P and good at the same time.
You do get the full "Legendary" access for 30 days once you've signed up for a subscription (standard MMO practice). Once that month is active, you can cancel that new subscription to not pay anything else. It's in the fine print, here http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/free/
Definitely not worth the extra 15 USD, though.
DC Universe Online just went free to play. Also I know it isn't an MMO but League of Legends is pretty fun and sorta RPG-like that is free to play. You might also check out Spiral Knights on Steam if you have it since it is also free.
The level cap for the game is 30. Upgrading to Legendary will not let you level to 31. After level 30, the game is about skill points from feats and what not and gear. Your new "level" is your Combat Rating.
As for what the different levels of access give you, here is a link that details it.
The way I understand it, if you pay for Legendary and stop, you would fall back to Premium and only lose the things that are different about them, such as going from no cash cap to only being able to use $2000 at a time the rest going into your escrow. I have no idea what happens to items that are in inventory/bank slots that are lost.

Here's a good table detailing the difference between a subscription, a total payment on the game of $5 or more, and absolutely free play. I think the biggest differences between free and premium is that you have less character slots, less inventory and no item trading for free players.
They have 3 tiers:
1: Free. You pay nothing, play the game with certain limitations (limited bag slots, can't trade with other players, limited character slots, etc).
2: Upgraded. Pay at least $5 in their store and you get more slots of everything, can trade items, and can join guilds.
3: "Legendary". This costs $15 a month (or you can buy a lifetime pass for a flat price). You get everything in the game, no limitations and access to all DLC for free.
See the comparison chart here: http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/en/free/
Absolutely, unquestionably, no.
>IS THE GAME PLAYABLE ACROSS BOTH PLATFORMS?
>We want DC Universe Online to be an experience that's fun, rewarding and balanced for both console and PC gamers, so we've decided to keep the platforms separate.
DC Universe is fun, it's f2p also. It's also free to play on the ps3. mmorpg.com's game list they have a big list of mmo's to pick from.
Honestly, it isn't a ton but it was enough to get me by. I never really had a problem being able to afford items with cash. I would usually stay capped and kept my bags at least halfway full with various items I didn't need. I would sell those as soon as I bought whatever. And the inventory thing isn't a huge deal, like you said it's just convenient. Here's the website if you wanna check it out. http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/
There are three levels of plans. Free, Premium and Legendary. I suggest that you aim for at least Premium, since it is a one-time fee of 5 dollars.
The breakdown of the plans can be found here.
here's a table showing what you can get- http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/free/
From the looks of it, you can't use station cash to pay for monthly subscription fees. However, you can use it to buy the DLCs and have access to them forever.
"The Currency tab of the Inventory displays the currency (Cash and Influence) and any badges the player has accumulated. Badges are obtained through select PvP matches and end-game group content (Raids, etc). Badges are required by certain Vendors to buy high-level gear." This included PVP gear.
If you're just a "free" player the maximum amount of characters you can have is 2. Although I believe there is a way to subscribe and you can have more characters, bank slots and inventory slots but this does kind of take away from the whole F2P aspect. More info here. Hope this helps.
Okay, this is a very noobish question and I'm kinda sure I already know what the answer is but it's puzzling me and I can't seem to find any confirmation anywhere.
See this screenshot
Am I correct in assuming that the numbers on the right side of the line are the total amount of skill points and power points accumulated?
Also, do quests ever get less ambiguous? I was doing the Gorilla questline in Metropolis and the directions in the quest text just seemed very incomplete. It's not undo-able, but I definitely found myself scratching me head over a few objectives that could have been explained more clearly. It could just be me and not getting some of the objectives right off the bat, did you get this feeling while playing?
The Free part is pretty balls though.
http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/free/
:/ I've played plenty of Free Korean MMOs, and more often than not those MMOs just rely on an item store that isn't game breaking and that generally works decently well.
Here is the official table showing all advantages and disadvantages. It seems like even though it is free to play, the free to plays will be at a disadvantage gameplay wise as well (inventory slots, currency), which is kind of what we were fighting so hard against in BF3 (better equipment for pre-orders)...
