If you get the production APK... you know what to do: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk-upload/.
I've used Duo for a while, and it's pretty awesome, but the fact that you're locked to a single device is monumentally dumb. People have tablets these days, multiple phones... Why, Google?!
But anyway, the app itself is quite sweet and very simple. QUIC-powered video is the best in its class, graceful handling of connectivity switches is great - no more dropped calls.
It doesn't do background video though - the video just pauses for the other side, and you just switch to audio. The pause animation is really morbid - everything goes to black-and-white and slowly dims to black.
I like how it also disconnects from Wi-Fi automatically if it gets too slow, and if that doesn't help, video gets disabled to at least keep the voice conversation going.
The app start-up time is an issue I hope they can work on because it turns on the front-facing camera immediately, and depending on your phone, this could take many seconds with a cold start. I'd rather see part of the UI - basically the contact list - before the (pointless at this point) video of myself shows up.
And, of course, there are no desktop or web clients, which limits the usefulness of the app for me. https://duo.google.com is just a simple marketing page. One could only hope these are planned.
https://www.google.com/duo redirects to https://duo.google.com/ so your logic is not sound. Duo does not have a web client.
I wish that there would be a web client for Allo and Duo but let's not get out hopes up yet.
Control Panel >> Programs and Features >> left.click(Skype) >> left.click("Uninstall") >> end
Wait for green bar to fill all the way up.
Your Internet Browser >> https://duo.google.com/about/ >> left click "Try Duo for web" >> follow on screen prompts >> end
You're welcome friend.
Offense intended, fuck that. GV and Duo serve entirely different purposes. One is a supplemental phone number the other is for video chatting. You don't just mash products together because they have a thing or two in common.
And yeah as another reply mentioned, Duo is already e2e encrypted by default. It can already be used from https://duo.google.com/ for desktop or tablet users. Looking things up and thinking ideas through isn't rocket science yet folks like yourself can't figure it the fuck out for some reason.
If you both have Google accounts I would suggest Duo. Also nice to use on your phone if you are away from home as it is very data efficient and works well even on a poor signal.
I dread the day they my ex finally finds someone long-term just because of situations like this.
FWIW, I have my ex blocked on FB as well but you (or they) can set up a FB Messenger Kids app and it creates a link or code so that it is private and only accessible by invitation.
We did that at first but now we use Google Duo because more people had it already (other family members)
Anyway, I know that doesn't fix them being pretty and controlling but just FYI...
For some reason it doesn't seem to be that well known but I'd definitely recommend Google Duo, the video quality is excellent, much better than anything else I've tried, and it handles a poor/spotty connection well.
Neither of those are dropped. They still have been updating the splash page, they just made a "desktop" version of Allo a couple months ago...
Google dropped carrier support for hangouts, largely because I think it's a waste of time for them to continue. People use alternatives to hangouts, and the way they use hangouts when they do is not over SMS.
This is normal, you ahve 100 companies trying to make the next big thing, and 98 of them will stop trying when they aren't one of the 2 that took off.
Youtube chat is still there in youtube live streams.
Google voice is still there. The tech for it to transcribe voicemails is used on android, on my phone.
As far as I know, every service in this area will require an account no matter what. The only other thing I could suggest is either Discord https://discordapp.com/ (which is really for gamers and the like but functional for what you need) and Google Duo https://duo.google.com/ .
edit: video chat is currently slowly rolling out to all discord users. Might be another month or more before it's out universally.
FYI - If you really want to use RCS and keep your phone on when using the web, you can turn off Fi sync and enable RCS and then use Device Pairing for the web. To make voice calls on the web, you can use Duo.
If you can get him to install it, Google Duo. It's the cross-platform equivalent to Facetime, and can be associated with both a phone number and email address. The app automatically shows you anyone who is in your phone contacts and also has the app installed. And if they don't, you can send them a link to install it or to invite them to chat.
The app is single purpose and uses data (or wifi) to make video or audio calls. Similar to using WhatsApp, there are no international fees since it's data, not a traditional Phone call. You can also use it from a computer, though group calls are mobile-only right now.
Bonus is it works very well with poor connections, in case that's the case with his phone service.
> I’m gonna be honest, I didn’t understand half of that lol.
AmA
> I took a programming class and got a 48 lol.
That's okay, I suck at programming big-time.
> But it will probably be 4 years or so before I’m comfortable spending a good amount of money on a pc. I wanna build up my savings for a few years after college. But if you’re still on Reddit I’ll pm ya my dude.
Oh well by that time we're all going to be in the VR matrix! (No but seriously, I love VR). I'm looking to hop off of reddit and go to /r/Tildes eventually. Not liking the direction reddit has been taking, Tildes seems like a redditor's wet dream. But it'll probably be a slooooooow transition. So who knows. You could also just friend me on Steam and talk to me there, since I'm invested (and believe) in SteamVR.
>I personally navigate my iPhone way easier than my friend's droid, but that’s just because it’s what I’m used to!
Which Android device did he have? It's a HUGE spectrum out there. Some are super simple like the Pixel 2, others are the anti-iPhone like Samsung's TouchWiz. I honestly believe that stock android is more simple than iOS now, especially if you want to use anything other than Apple's ecosystem.
>And I FaceTime a lot. My parents wouldn’t understand Skype lol
FaceTime's video quality is pretty lack-luster, about on par with Skype's. My family uses Google Hangouts, even though google is being a dick and trying to get rid of it for consumers. There's also Duo, which seems to be a direct competitor to FaceTime. It's just as simple to use, but with extraordinarily higher quality and the awesome "knock-knock" feature
Help me out...why would I set up a google account on my phone? so everytime they need a PIN google will call me? Or will a new google account keep working if you remove all contact data? dont think so.
> You can even register their landline number with google duo and they can do duo calls with the google home :)
This sounds promising. I can log into a google webpage for duo and just create a new account using a landline? havent found a way to do that yet. How? Can I create a google account here? https://duo.google.com/about/
Gave it a try...and nope. does not work. I end up here: https://admin.google.com/google.com/ServiceNotAllowed Before that it shortly says Duo requires to send an SMS at least once.
:-(
I'm a big fan of Google Duo. Very easy install, and once it's installed you can add a button to the homepage of your/their phone to start a video call. Very easy to use, and it has "fun" features too that sound silly but can really bring a laugh to a sad loved one (it sounds cheesey, but trust me, you'd be amazed at how often it works). It also allows you to easily send video messagesj, files, emojies and just to voice call.
no you're right even with curly hair they wouldn't have the same texture but that still doesn't convince me that guy isn't at least half asian.
also, since you're convinced about chinese people not being able to have big curly hair my proof: https://imgur.com/NWJSnW4
I know it's not "afro shaped" now but when it was shorter it had a rounder shape like the dude in the pic. Or maybe that guy is wearing a wig like that one dude said below. Who knows.
Also are you just gonna ignore how someone pointed out that there's an asian dude in a different google ad: https://duo.google.com/intl/en_uk/about/ ?
I'm not convinced it's bad enough to start canceling google but I certainty don't trust them either tbh. That's all. I honestly didn't want to comment much on this matter in the first place.
Same. I went to the link from the Tweet and it worked fine. I created a new group of 4 people and it worked. However, just visiting duo.google.com as you stated does not have the group feature listed, at this time.
Doesn't seem to be working for me yet. I did update to a new V83 and still no dice.
Edit: it allowed me to make a group with 12 total people if I followed the link in the tweet.
https://duo.google.com/about/?noredirect&gc=1
Click try duo and the button should appear.
Well I just tested it with 3 others and it didn't work, maybe it's still rolling out.
Side note: the Group Call option is there (on the left hand side) if you follow the link in the tweet, if you browse to duo.google.com the group call option is not there.
Not sure what your situation is but on Windows there is no Duo app. It's just something that runs in a browser (Chrome or Firefox). So if you don't have duo.google.com and logged into your Duo account on in the browser, the call cannot be answered there. I have the same Duo account on a number of devices (phone, Lenovo Display etc.) and they are pop up the call even if the app isn't running. But the PC requires is to be running.
I did have the gmail account setup on a Windows computer at duo.google.com first.
The overall experience is jank. People can not find him as it only looks up by phone number, but he can call others if their numbers are used. Also I can make group calls with him in it.
It doesn't matter if your voice passes or not, or if you pass or not to a gender therapist. That's why they're there, to see if transitioning is for you. They can diagnose you with gender dysphoria, and get you started on HRT. Sure, doing it over the phone kind of sucks, have you considered video chatting over Duo? That way, you get to see each other.

Good luck bro, it'll get easier. Stay strong and stay healthy.
When you go to duo.google.com and successfully log in, you get a little (+) icon in the right-hand end of the search bar. Clicking it installs the web app that does support push notifications. Do you think it's implemented in a different way to apps that we get using your method?
I always thought https://www.instructables.com/id/1986-Raspberry-Pi-Video-Doorbell/ was a neat solution that uses Google Duo to "call" you when someone rings the bell.
You can generally set up most things through the website. Once you have an account, they have secure messaging that they use.
Can you use some sort of VoIP product to make phone calls? Something like Google Duo?
It is better quality and lower data useage (better compression) than FaceTime.
I use Telegram for chats myself. It is hard to get USA people to switch to it but so far I am very successful, almost every person I know uses it now and iOS people love it the most.
Duo is great, but you can have anyone open Duo on a browser at duo.google.com and then they can face chat with you on your phone. Or vice versa.
Video doesn't work for me, "No camera found". Even though duo.google.com is allowed to access camera (and microphone).

Also, it did not work at all when I used my (free) G Suite account. I had to switch to my regular Google/Gmail account.
In ChromeOS, I notice that if I go to duo.google.com, I have the option to install it (as a progressive web app).
Does this work in desktop Chrome and other browsers, and allow notifications?
Both solutions already exist, and both come automatically on (at least stock) Android.
For better messaging, RCS: https://jibe.google.com/
For video chatting (and it's uniformly implemented across the platform, so from contacts/phone you can just hit the video button): https://duo.google.com/
