To be fair though the art they're replacing is even more trash in most cases. Literally just screenshots of the old models drawn over with some photoshop thrown in.
The artwork isn't bad-bad , it just lacks Riot's art direction which makes it stand out like a sore thumb since it doesn't share the same style as the rest of the artwork.
You know what happens when you have no art direction whatsoever? HoN happens. Seriously, they can't even keep the style consistent between splash art of the same hero.
> My guess is that the calibration system just doesn't really have a standard of measurement to identify 7k+ players, as there's so few of them they don't want to completely mess up the MMR distribution by mistakenly putting people at extremely high MMRs.
In order to fit the old to the new MMR you have to compress the current MMR values. The new system has 7 tiers of 1000 rating each. The maximum rating you can get through calibration should be 6999.
Of course you can get more rating beyond 6999, but not through calibration.
I remember in HoN there was also a rank compression between seasons at one point. I googled and found this on one their season 5 update page:
> Compression
>Another bump in the road that we ran into during Season 4 was the magnitude of the rank compression that was applied between seasons. We noticed that the compression hit players harder than we had intended.
Just copy all of Wretched Hag's (hon qop port) abilities: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/heroes/view/104#hero.
The current level of shadow strike effect as default on her ulti. Better attack animation too.
Currently my only success with qop has been in the offlane with shadow strike at lvl 2/3 and constantly spamming it to get some proper harass going. I don't bother with her ulti till lvl11 though.
Edit: ty to /u/Eikill below
Edit 2: another thing, I believe dota2 applies DoT spells per second as opposed to HoN's constant application. Is this common for all dot abilities? Part of the reason Hag is so much stronger is slow and disables are much stronger in HoN.
Since this got posted in a linux thread, some of you might be interested to know that the bot AI has been open sourced and that everyone who can scrip in lua can create or tweak a bot.
Also the first custom maps contest's winners have just been announced so 4 new customs maps (Warcraft3 style) are heading to the client and more custom maps contests are underway.
HoN has a 1 lane map too, but i think it's far superior to LoL's as it actually has a jungle and interesting routes aorund it which are more similar to the actual map.
I would love a similar dota map
EDIT: Here's another spreadsheet with the graph someone was kind enough to make for me.
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=tj3voY8Yea3t0u1WGgp994Q#gid=0
If this site worked I'd be able to make a graph of the distribution, but it doesn't and since Maide doesn't seem to want to work on his site I don't know any alternative ladders ... Oh nevermind, it works, they just suck at coding and have the links between pages with an extra /players in there for some reason so they don't connect.
Getting to work, will have distribution soon.
EDIT: Wow excel can't model a distribution. That's kind of a joke. I'd have to play with a frequency count just to get a histogram.
Anyway, of the approximately 250,000 players, here are the percentiles.
I had to do some digging through the patch notes to find out what buff you were even talking about but I found it... 2.5.22 released 6 weeks ago:
Drunken Master
Considering that he still has the lowest win percentage of any hero (38.3%) and is the 4th least used hero I'd say the buff hasn't been all that spectacular.
Edit: Just got done playing around with DM in practice to try to see why he's so low tier. Just noticed that using skills while you have drunk charges actually consumes drunk charges without healing you in order to get the extra effects. This means that if you are using lvl 4 Stagger each time it is off cooldown you will run out of drunk charges before Drink comes off cooldown even at level 4, and this is without even using any of your other skills.
As a general piece of advice to EVERY HON PLAYER:
Read these please:
In the code of conduct, under staff impersonation, it says: "...to intimidate or otherwise gain an advantage over other players"
You claimed you would go around the RAP system. You basically said that you would talk to a GM to give your report extra weight. Whether or not you actually know a GM is irrelevant. Your goal was to intimidate him, by "impersonating" that you had the power to give your report extra weight. This is against the rules.
Does that make sense?
The games / programs that you've mentioned:
All run fantastically in Wine. If you're looking for a game similar to LoL but with full Linux support, Heroes of Newerth has a native Linux client.
StarCraft 2 runs flawlessly, though you will notice that it won't run as well as it will on Windows, in terms of performance.
RIFT has a gold rating on WineHQ so I imagine it runs pretty well.
Ubuntu is nice, and if you don't want to have to get your hands dirty, it's not a bad way to go. I personally run Arch Linux because I know exactly what I want in my OS, and I don't want any extra services running in the background.
If you're still only beginning with Linux, start with Ubuntu, then maybe work your way to other distros from there.
Please do this!
HoN currently has 89 heroes(as of patch 2.1.6.1) - 48 of which are DotA ports.
Since all future heroes will be S2 creations, the number of heroes a person has to pay for increases over time.
Reasons why it should be done:
a) This would encourage DotA / future Dota 2 players to try out HoN since all DotA heroes are available from the get-go.
b) No need to rotate a whole bunch of free to play heroes per week - it will be a static 48 heroes plus a S2 Hero Spotlight. Every week a hero is spotlighted and goes free for that week. This is coupled with the release of a YouTube video for that hero - the good old MsPudding Hero Spotlights.
c) Help improve S2's image a bit.
d) Bigger Hero Pool for F2Pers to choose from!
It's basically good marketing and would make some of the players feel good about the game.

There's no visible space between her breasts. The gem completely obscures it.
Furthermore the Gem doesn't move around in-game, it's completely stationary. But hey, let's keep assuming things.
As a former HoN player, I was wholly confused. Andromeda ? So Vengeful spirit? Then I read comments and it was a female Enigma! OHHHHH.........
Also, the biggest issue seems to be the images of that thumbnail of heroes thing loading. You should think about moving those the amazon cloud service you're using. It's taking each image 2.5s just to connect to the servers.
This alone takes 5 seconds to load: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/heroes/gemini_big.png
How about checking his stats before saying that? Having a low KDR does not equal to feeding. Having a low K+ADR does.
And one game hardly justifies a permaban.
Here I'll even give you a handy Link. His last game was on 18-8-11 on the list. And his stats there were 2-2-7. http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/player_stats.php?aid=249056
Apparently I've placed more wards at 1,779.0 (matchmaking). But that's kind of depressing. This isn't even my first account. http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/player_stats.php?aid=3236683
For example, on my previous account, I placed 1,281.0 (public games, before hon 2.0). http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/player_stats.php?aid=3028191
So between my athorp account and my Thought account, I've placed a total of 3616 wards in matchmaking normal mode and public stats games. This doesn't even count casual mode, nostats, or my 3rd secret account.
Yes, I'm actually pretty sad about this discovery.
Want to see what's happening most recently in the world of HoN? (http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/newsletter/vol8/news.html)
Tournaments, philanthropy and new content. Patches are free and arrive almost every weekend!

Does this mean I should already be dead?
This was my HoN stats before I switched over to Dota 2.Had 1838 matches total 43% of games played as Plague Rider so... close to 790 matches as Plague Rider.
(For anyone that doesn't know Plague Rider in HoN=Lich)
Not to disrespect, but some people really don't want seeing the landing page everytime they visit the website. It's nice seeing it the first time, but please not everytime. If it helps: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/?home
HoN basically had this http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/items/view/143 .
They also had a few other fairly cool items that dota doesnt have, one i miss a lot is the upgrade for Shadowblade: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/items/view/141 which adds an eaglesong to the shadowblade.
Well, just read up on the heroes you are not familiar with. I don't really know what to say, theres no such mechanic as Myrmidon's carp that you have to actively counter.
You should consider Grave Locket in your next games. It's a good, cheap item. Disregard Energizer. Genjuro is the evolution of Assassins Shroud that lets you go invis twice and makes the crit attack slow your enemy. Pick it up on agi heroes like SS that utilize AS anyway.
Wrong. The skill redesigns are mostly design decisions, not balance. E.g. Legionnaire's charge fits the hero a lot more than Axe's debuff, Juggernaut's healing ward doesn't fit the character, Rexxar's aura was too generic and Pyromancer's fervor was what he needed to a better laning phase.
Don't say stupid things without actually looking at the reasons why changes exist and how much things were changed. HoN is balanced around HoN, not around DotA. There are many small differences that need to be looked at when balancing a hero.
Oh, and Rylai is actually numerically STRONGER than Glacius, so he wasn't buffed to infinity. Just compare both.
And the reasons why Warbeast isn't as good are:
1.) Honestly there are no specifically noob games that aren't invaded by pubstompers and smurfs. just keep playing and eventually you'll be lucky enough to get a legit noob game.
2.) On the bottom right where it lists everyone in the game (to the right of chat) there will be a red "no symbol" next to their name, click that.
4.)This might help.
It is completely your fault and S2 does not need to do anything to help you. It may sound harsh but you agreed to the terms when you signed up.
http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/tos.php
You have to remember that there are a lot of registered accounts, there is no way to check all of them right away.
sigh. when you get a smackdown, it's recorded in your stats under smackdown. if you are humiliated, it's not recorded on your stats. if someone taunts you and you kill them, a humiliation is recorded on your stats- meaning you caused someone to be humiliated x times. thx for the downvote though o.O
just look at my stats:
http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/player_stats.php?aid=3261119
2 smackdowns, 5 humilations... do you think ive been humiliated on 70% of my taunts? no, i just never use taunt so i only wind up getting humiliations from when people have taunted me
My guess is that the blacksmith picture is actually covering a new hero, one they do not want to reveal yet. The wings on gauntlet is possibly a buff applied by this new hero? After all, with the way they are releasing new heroes like candy in a parade they must have another hero almost ready for release if they are releasing Flux now.
Although this could simply be a new item and the cover is in fact over a vindicator skin, let me see if I can remember that link about something new for vindi....
edit: here is the link for the new item possibility, put these together and we have a new item maybe? sound1 sound2 engineer has been up to something lol
The vindicator link isn't as helpful as I thought, but here it is as well, might lead to something since they bothered to put him in this leak... sound3
Do not open them all at once, one at a time trust me.
OOOHHHH, HERP DERP.
Her abilities change by Day/Night. Notice each ability listed here has two icons, one green/normal and the other one red/changed. Also note that her glowy pendant thing is 'Emerald Red'. And by change, I mean they gain buffs, additional effects, AND changed visuals.
What it will likely be is that the first ability (Emerald Lightning) works similar to Jester's Acid Cocktail, except probably a little faster and stealing some atkspd - at night, both of those values are increased (stun duration and atkspd stolen).
The second ability (Power Throw) looks like Pharaoh's nuke, except with a minimal distance or possible boomerang effect like Mali's sword - at night, the range is infinite and I'm willing to bet the damage/AoE are increased.
The third ability (Deja Vu) looks like a kind of blink, maybe like Hag's, but multi-use (as in, blink here, then there, then there - maybe charge-based?) - but at night, it leaves behind illusions that you can pop back to and can be targeted (to really fuck-up your enemies).
The fourth ability (Emerald Red) is the source of the power-flipping; that is, it's an Emerald during the day (normal abilities, no buffs), but becomes a blood-red Ruby at night (allowing for buffed abilities a la Blacksmith). Hopefully she'll come with something akin to Balanar's 'Darkness', unless her abilities themselves make up for it.
And if this was said before, my bad, but it just clicked for me.
As I've stated in previous posts similar to this, this really isn't the place to be trying to reach S2 employees. It's exploiting the fact that some of them are redditors.
Regardless, are you sure you're appealing the ban properly? This covers specifically what to do in event of a ban. It seems like there's an official appeal tool the hon website uses. Here is a link. Since I don't have any bans against myself, it says that I can't appeal anything, so I don't know what it will look like for you.
In addition, while you allegedly were at the fountain because your teammates were harassing you, it is still a violation of the rules of conduct and I'd imagine you can be reported for illogical refusal to participate. No matter how annoying or harassing your teammates are, you should just avoid violating the rules of conduct so they can't report you. Tower hug and ignore all of them in chat and mute their mics. Just follow the rules and ignore abusive people. Also, I don't think there's any way to check what was said in voice communication so it'd be their word versus yours.
Right which you see people in this sub asking about all that time. PL passive or or Luna's passive. I don't see why the passives are not toggle-able. I feel like that would allow for more lane control and add to the diversity of hero skill builds. Weaver don want to get more then one point in germinate early its not cost efficient but make it so you can toggle it and it opens a up a different play style. I would do this kind of stuff all the time in HoN. Get a VS and max aura but have it toggled to only heroes with an Arachna to put out serious pain or swap that Arachna and get a Luna and you now have a pushing power house lane with great kill potential. Back to the topic at hand I feel like a gem indicator would be immensely helpful and help change the play style of the gem carriers or even who will pick up it up.
chipper from HoN.
one of the funniest heroes to play imo.
http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/heroview.php?hid=124
Rocket barrage is rockets that you send where you aim, moves at about the same speed as pudge hooks, so dodgeable but easily abusable by hiding them in terrain. ministuns and a lot of damage per hit (especially if they have tar on them)
Tar toss is similar to what firebat has but isn't stackable (18 CD on rank 1) slows movement and movespeed according to how close to the middle of the the aoe the enemy is.
Focus buffer isn't super useful, it's just a magic shield that absorbs 500 at max rank, pretty useful lategame but not so much earlier since even if you get hit by spells it's usually not necessary to survive, just hit them with a tar/rocket combo and you can get away safely without risk.
Sawblade showdown is the ulti, puts up a line of sawblades on the ground that damages for 8 seconds, aghanim's/SotM gives it a huge slow and increases the size of it. Really fun ulti

>Q. Do I have to purchase heroes with real money if I want a hero not in the Hero Pool?
>No. You can earn heroes by simply playing the game. However, if you would like to get a hero quicker, you can >buy Gold Goblin Coins at http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/ purchase.
The reason they gave everyone 2k coins and free items was because the server crashed and they had to back up to a point before the items were even introduced.
All coins earned in matchmaking, gold coins purchased, or shop purchases had to be rolled back to the last viable backup they had created on June 9th. (source)
The 2k coins were meant to compensate for matchmaking losses. Any gold purchases can be recovered from this page
That heros skills make so much more sense. Lesh is just sorta like "magic shit happens! on a centaur, because"
A chains and spikes torturer really makes more sense for every skill.
I thought Tim Buckley of Control Alt Delete reached 10,000 referrals before TB.
I remember when Tim Buckley reached 10k referrals and then he found out that Riot wouldn't let him design his own champion but instead would let him "give them some ideas" and barely be involved in the process. He got really pissed and was approached by S2 Games to make his own hero for HoN. He accepted their offer and he made Cthuluphant even though he had never played HoN before. I believe Buckley was allowed to make the Skillset as well as the visuals for Cthuluphant which resulted in him being OP for awhile before we has nerfed.
I just assumed that the whole "Cthuluphant" incident is why they don't offer the "opportunity to design a champion" anymore.
Here's the GM's report: Hello Slutfur

3rd most used hero in the last 7 days.
hardly gets used? I think not.
Even in pro scene he has been getting picked a lot more, requiring opposing teams to pick up legionnaire or puppet master as a counter.

Not sure if they check/ban that, but its not allowed.
They are very hard to watch if you don't play them, yes, for that reason I'd recommend downloading it and giving it a go (it's free!): http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/download.php
You can check the Herodex in-game for a list of Heroes, otherwise here is an online one
Here's the Prodex if you haven't seen it yet, a guide for every Hero (except Salforis which is coming soon): http://www.nigmanoname.com/prodex.html
Hey, man, I'm one of the moderators over at /r/HeroesOfNewerth. Feel free to go around and check us out. There are a lot of posts that are aimed at noobs.
Also feel free to create a trial account where you can play a few games for free. There are tons of redditors in the reddit channel that would gladly play with you or show you a few things. If you would like I could even play with you.
The best thing to remember about HoN is to always ask questions and be open to suggestions. The only time people get angry is when you ignore what they're saying and continue to do wrong.
I redownloaded the game after 2 1/2 year break 2 weeks ago. I could log in as normal, did you download the wrong client? In which region are you? I just downloaded the Client from here http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/download/
Frostburn Staff have found the solution, as unideal as it is.
You mean like the time Tim from CAD comic where he designed CTHULHUPHANT for when Riot's refer a friend v.1 had that the reward to design a champ. Tim came up with the idea with his fans for Cthulhuphant and submitted it to Riot, but Riot decided against it, and HoN approached him to take the champ idea. I take it Riot's idea was to have the winner give input on designing the next champion instead of designing a whole champion.
But anyways, just pointing out one of the ideas someone had for a potential elephant champion.
http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/calamity#events
Click each of the numbers for descriptions on how to obtain, most involve playing 1-3 games in a set time period or buying icons in set time periods. Should be pretty self explanatory.
Back in DotA WarCraft 3 from years 2005-2009 it was allowed, but it was overused so it was nerfed to disallow casting on allies. In HoN they lowered the cast range to 450 range to nerf it instead of disallowing. Also cannot use items for 0.5 seconds upon landing, cyclone duration is 2 second. http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/items/view/76
http://www.splitreason.com/heroesofnewerth
This was advertised in a very old newsletter, no idea if they still sell the stuff but that's where I'd look!
He's played quite a bit in pubs. You can see the detailed hero usage here. Obviously he's never going to be a pro-level carry. but he usually hovers in the top 20 out of 100ish heroes picked in pubs. It's cuz he's, in my opinion, really fun in the first 20-30 minutes. And who doesn't love his ult? It's great. I have a blast playing him.
GM Explanation: Excessive verbal abuse.
You're not suspended because of a vendetta, you're suspended for actions in-game via Report-A-Player.

HoN would be the primary copy of dota, yes. And succubus is their version of bane elemental - here's succubus for comparison. Succu is a great makeover imho, fits the role very good. Here you can hear the ulti he is talking about > if you start at the beginning of the video just jump to: 8m26s //ops, evidently the video I gave you didn't give off the sound I was looking for, use the link shal128 posted
The main thing to notice here is the 49% wins. If this is not the account you started with (as in, you had another account where you learned the game and probably lost a grip of games), I'm sorry to say that you are below average.
The only favorite hero I see listed is Rampage, so I must assume that you pick heroes that are similar. That being said, a 0.7 KD with non-support heroes is not exactly amazing.
You have 77 creeps/game and 8 denies/game, which at the 1500 level, is above average. Furthermore, it seems as if you have 2+ wards/game, which goes against what your favorite heroes seem to be.
Bottom line: if your stats are based on support heroes, you seem like an average player. If your stats are based on carry/ganking heroes, I'm sorry to say you are below average.
My guess: you probably play a wide variety of heroes, which can make your stats more ambiguous. You are usually not the one leading the team. Your wins and losses are much more dependent on your teammates than your own skill.
http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/heroesguide_view.php?gid=60243
QWWQWQQRWER is the proper skillbuild, I've run the numbers. Item build for me is usually Hatchet+Shield (solo mid), Bottle, Boots, Chalice/Ring of Sorcery, Striders, then Tablet of Command. Follow it with Hellflower or Puzzlebox typically, Sheep if you're doing really well. Anything after that is extreme luxury, build to counter the other team.
Control the lane by drawing creep aggro and using your huge base damage and slow to punish people who step out of position. Control runes in much the same way. Be sure to make best use of the dissipating minus magic armor on Flaming Hammer by stunning right after it lands. Gank heavily with runes, a Blacksmith with DD or Haste even at low levels can do so much autoattack damage and tank quite a bit of tower damage too.
I wrote a lengthy guide a while back for Blacksmith here on this subreddit but Google is failing me for some reason. =/
May you please research and think before posting? First, Torturer have the same base armor as Leshrac. Don't spread lies please.
Also, you say striders are good on support heroes maybe gankers. What you fail to understand is supporting implies ganking. Pretty much all support heroes got gank potential, with some exception with heavy babysit heroes who nobody play anyway (Empath for example).
Finally, if you can't see why HoN changes haven't changed the game pace, you don't know much about DotA. Buyback change means less farming/defensive play in high level game when games reach endgame. Gankers deciding the outcojme of a game earliers is for a lot, and just look at what metagame S2 is trying to force into our throat, it's pretty much it. Pushing strategy is right now easier than turtling, for Kongor is as important as DotA and right now pushers hero are kinda better than the rest (that's an opinion though, with Keeper, Bulwalk, Torturer, all those healers, it's kinda easy to push).
I was about to poop on your parade and call you out on not solo queuing, like most Oph players do. You clearly solo'd, so that's awesome!
Here's mine: http://hon.rychlis.cz/somnambulist/
Best streak was 10 wins in a row taking me from 1767-1817. Quit after Parasite :(
Also, guide: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/heroesguide_view.php?gid=514
Do follow this guide: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/heroesguide_view.php?gid=514
Do watch replays of LUCIFER playing Ophelia.
Do play with a competent 1v2 player that can play heroes with escapes.
Do not build Whispering Helm. 3 creeps is enough and one teamfight could kill all of your helm'd creeps.
Do not build SotM. Your mana cannot sustain an ultimate every 30 seconds, and teamfights last less then 30.
[Fixed] Damage values from Counter Helix are wrong.
I would like to ask, why is counter-helix leveled up in Dota? I remember that everyone left it at lvl 1 in HoN. And it made sense when I tested it.
Maybe it's because the charge was better to level up because it increases the attack speed of the enemies affected, and it increased the damage dealt by axe to creeps more than counter-helix?
Here is the HoN hero: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/heroview.php?hid=38
I think the problem is that he is a champion whose strength is supposed to be his ultimate, yet none of his skills actually aid that purpose. Take Rampage from heroes of newerth for example. His kit includes being a powerful basher with high movespeed, so how does a rampage go out there and use his ulti? The answer is with stampede. Just Q someone and run towards him at max speed and with magic immunity, go and drag someone into your team with your still better than average speed and watch the 5v1 ensue.
Skarner needs that, a way to prettu much kidnap the enemy carry without them realizing he is coming.
Just wrote a guide for you. This is more or less how I play her: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/heroesguide_view.php?gid=37177
Also try to not keep your creeps too close to Ophelia. You need to control both separately.
Exactly. Consider that emerald warden has one of the greatest win ratios. If only a subset of the legacy players had access to the hero, you CANNOT argue that the portion with access did not have an advantage. To suggest to the playerbase otherwise is an insult.
It seems very likely to me that the games in the "basic" bracket are going to be absolute trash. Suddenly, all of the mid-tier players (experienced 1500s-1650ish) who dreamed of stomping, but weren't good enough to justify buying a sub-account, will create free accounts to stomp with. Simple knowledge of the heroes and the game would allow one to stomp anyone switching over from LoL or dota. So in MANY of the games in that bracket, there will be pseudo-smurfs hunting true newbies. The sheer number of 1600+ players joining "noobs only" pub games is evidence enough that such actions are popular.
Even worse, consider what would happen if a pseudo-smurf encounters a true smurf, or by the grace of some agro-driven tower dive starts to tank a game: they can leave without consequence, as the account they are playing on is worthless and expendable.
Mark my words, the week when scout is part of the free hero pool will be hon's darkest hour. Every 1423 player who first picks scout and calls mid will be there, and when they fail they will leave.
And the early access bullshit is a fucking horrendous idea. Nigma has already argued that it won't have a potential effect on team balance, but even the slightest amount of critical thought reveals that to be disingenuous (considering that each hero has a unique win%). For example, emerald warden has one of the highest win% of any hero. So how would it be balanced for the legacy players if only a subset of them had access to the hero?
As already said, it is Heroes of Newerth (HoN).
I'll one-up the other guys; here's the site
Accounts are currently on sale. It's a DotA clone; fun game, terrible community (bad manners).
There was a post about the new ‘casual mode’ which talked about this, the general upshot being that with gold loss on death you’re pinned in to playing a much more conservative game than otherwise.
On googling this seems to be what I remember reading: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/newsletter/vol5/CasualMode.pdf
The game has various heroes you can choose to play as. Some are male, some are female. Some are monstrous, some are normal humans. S2 (the parent company) has started implementing a microtransactions shop where people can buy alternative models and skins for the various heroes. Many of these alternative models involve turning a male hero into a "sexy" female version, or a monstrous female hero into a "sexy" human version.
The first post inquires why there are only alternatives of "sexy" female models and not the other way around, i.e. of female models into males.
Much of the commenters proceed to call him gay insultingly for requesting this, instead of more "sexy" females.
Heroes of Newerth and LoL both belong to the Dota genre.
HoN costs 30 dollars and gets all you all the champions and free updates for life.
LoL uses the free to play model but you have to spend more than 30 dollars to get all champions.
HoN is closer to the original blue print (www.playdota.com) LoL is trying to be different at all costs.
HoN has more features and has Windows, Linux and Mac support.
HoN has a competitive scene. LoL does not.
Overall, it's a matter of preference. It's best to try the game for yourself so you can form an opinion: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/trial.php
It just a personal opinion (so please don't attack me... ^ ^ ') I actually haven't played a moba that I hated more than Dota2 and I tried out at 20+ mobas trough the years. There's 3 main reason for this:
So as you can see calling Dota2 better than Leage is totally subjective. Personally I for one, think the best Moba right now on Linux is Heroes of Newerth, yes it's still actively developed.
>Target a location to apply Cursed to enemy heroes in the radius for 12 seconds. >Every 4 seconds Cursed targets take 10 / 20 / 30 / 40% of Health lost in Magic Damage since Cursed was applied. Also takes 5 / 10 / 15 / 20 Magic Damage per second while active
Take hold of his mighty pixelated controller and trusty pooch, Corgi, as you manipulate Newerth’s toughest foes into doing your bidding.
Remember, a quarter of all funds generated by the 8-Bit Collection will directly support Heroes of Newerth’s upcoming LAN, DreamHack Summer 2015!
Good point, that is way more efficient. Wish there was more items that were 1-2K gold in the game.
HoN had some interesting concepts. This one was really interesting http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/items/view/140
Basically you would build null talisman and a recipe.
>On kill or on assist, becomes charged. A charged Grave Locket gains +2 to all stats and reduces 10 seconds from the respawn timer. If the wielder dies, the charge will be removed.
It would be really helpful for the roaming supports with terrible stat gain.
http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/heroes/view/168#hero
Empath was my favorite and most played hero in HoN. This hero's signature ability was a barrier with vector placement. In other words, you could place it from range, at a specific point, with any angle you want. It was a very fun mechanic to use as a support. It's like fissure but not as long, and does not stun. It made for great gank setup and also juking. In addition, the hero had another strange mechanic for an ultimate. Empath could hop inside an allied hero, while still able to use all abilities and items, and giving a stat boost to that hero. While her skills seem low impact, she had the advantage of hiding during a fight, unable to be focused until her "ride" was taken down. This allowed her a very good presence in fights, and with short cooldowns she could really make a lot happen.
I'd like to see a hero that has one or maybe both of these mechanics in DotA. I really think we are missing out with the barrier spell "Illusory Veil".
Two examples of vectored spells in HoN:
Zephyr: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/heroes/view/31#hero Spell: Gust Similar to Deafening Blast from Invoker, but can be used to push enemies away (defensive) or towards you/into something else.
Bombardier: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/heroes/view/164#hero Spell: Air Strike Releases a line of air bombs. Most of the times the spell is casted facing the direction the enemy is running, matching (more or less) the movement speed of the heroes and hitting most of the bombs.
Try Heroes of Newerth, feels smooth and all heroes free save for one (early access).
If you can deal with any other game's shit tier and rise, you'll do well here.
http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/heroes/view/207#hero Answers most of your questions.
Q1) I agree with your skill build, however I tend to play a very aggressive Monarch. However, if you want to improve as a player, you really need to be taking your skills depending on the lane you are against and the way the game is going. Are you in a lane you can gank, or is mid easily gank-able? Then max your first skill. Are you against a kill lane or a lane with extremely high harass, or babysitting a carry with very little kill-potential? Then max your second skill. Is one of their team farming the jungle and ganking you, or are their team grouping up and training all over the place for ganks? Then max your third.
Q2) can be answered by actually reading her skill description, which is available in game as well (the learnatorium is your friend) however in short it gives movement speed and purges debuffs and stuns. No more 5 second arrows or Demented Shaman ults.
Q3) No it doesn't neither rev wards nor hero wards (Slither, Monarch, etc.) count towards them. Especially in Slither's case it would be far too easy to farm silver that way.
his crit was reworked some time ago, he now has a skill that lets him deal an additional 9 % of his damage with each hit, capping at 54%.
his details are here, looks like he has a Shallow Grave-like mechanic as his aghs upgrade.
I'm done with this SO
In 3rd/4th week of Nov of 2014.
(I can not open the schedule in http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/theatre)
Comeback here again after they announce the winner of this contest
http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/theatre
Also all the top 4 custom map of that contest will be played in hon in the near future
Also this is done by the help of s2 employee + the community of hon
sorry for my bad english
Legionnaire from HoN has the exact same skillset, except his 2nd skill is replaced with a charge that does AoE damage and increases the attack speed of opponents while decreasing their damage. That skill is the perfect replacement for Battle Hunger IMHO.
I played a lot of HoN before i switched to DotA.
I am still missing 2 Items in DotA. On one hand it s the Energizer http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/items/view/138
On the other, it s the Lightbrand. http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/items/view/146 This item was rly great, espacielly when you upgrade it with a frostburn (in DotA Sange&Yasha). http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/items/view/143
I wish you guys weren't lazy with this one: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/pg_3_bg.jpg
It would've been awesome to have a HTML5 video for that too as the background. Would've been some awesome nuclear effects.
In longterm everyone would go to their places but in short term (many many games...) teams would be absolutely random.
Translating it to MMR: (1496, 1421, 1610, 1450, 1443) vs (1382, 1434, 1417, 1353, 1402)
I don't think this match would be fun to play. Fast stomp by first team.
Yeah it's like that, but you also move towards the enemy.
Electrician is a HoN-only hero, as far as I know. Shadow Shaman is Pollywog Priest (Forked jolt, polymorph, tongue tie, voodoo wards).
HoN was meant as an unofficial sequel to Dota, so they ported almost all of their heroes over, and then started adding new ones.
I don't remember precisely, but: Quite some time ago there was a guy that picked plaguerider and went mid, rushing portalkey first item after boots etc. This was a normal strategy in DotA I believe, but not used in HoN. They lost that game and it was blamed on the plaguerider. He got reported and banned for griefing. He went to the forums and made a thread about it and it created a huge drama. People started making plaguerider guides with portalkey, which got voted to #1 plague rider guide and started making more and more threads on the forums about it.
I think this is 1 of the guides: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/guides/view/13316
You can get some developer art at their herodex
http://heroesofnewerth.com/heroes/Armadon/
cycle through alternate heroes on the top row, cycle through alternate models (skins/avatars) under the portrait (another row--some heroes have multiple avatars)
Here's another media link
Update KotF: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/heroesguide_view.php?gid=8
(may or may not change)
Amulet of Exile is very inefficient for starting items & early mana and I'd rather take 3x mana potions + Hatchet + 1x Runes of the Blight over a full Talisman as a starting item. This helps sustainability as well as farming speed.
Normally they'll just tell you to reinstall from the installer. Every release they update the installer at the main download page to the newest version. I'd try that. You might lose your key-binds, if I remember correctly.
Ok, guys, data on the image you are discussing (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/56936034/HonImage2GameLength.jpeg) are average game duration per player. For instance, for noobG, first player on ladder, you can see that his average game duration is 32m,38s (http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/player_stats.php?aid=3178957). So these are not individual games, but average game duration per player. Also, they do not drop below 15. Below 20, every thick is one minute. I know it is confusing. That is just strange way that program decided to make ticks.
Ah yes, I remember the long anticipation for Furion. He was going to make a serious dent to the meta of running trilanes.
Now I must refresh my memory of which hero came instead!
edit: It's Hell trying to locate newer patch notes without going to the HoN forums - and that place is worse. But, I did have a moment of many nostalgia while reading beta version 0.1 change logs. Re-living hours of gameplay and emotions from years ago, by reading about minor tweaks added to the game, is about as nerdy as it gets! Made me extremely happy, nevertheless. Here.
1.- 4 years, been playing HON since it came on: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/player_stats.php?aid=269947 I have over 1k games played, and Im looking forward to swtich to Dota 2. 2.-Im looking forward to the port of obsidian destroyer have sweet memories of owning with him. == New Game Mode: Casual Mode ==
This entirely new mode of play will provide new HoN players and casual gamers with a more “fun,” less punishing way to learn and play HoN. Elements in Casual Mode speed up progression and increase rewards in ways that remain true to the game's core identity, delivering a version that can be embraced by new and veteran players alike.
Changes from Normal Mode to Casual Mode are as follows
Exp range from 1000 to 1300
Removed gold loss on death
Increased hero bounty ** Hero base gold bounty: from 200 to 300 ** Hero gold bounty per level: from 5 to 10
First blood bonus: from 200 to 300
Gold bounty per streak: from 50 to 75
Hero assist gold totals 50% of kill amount, split between all assisters
Radius assist gold base: from 30 to 0
Radius assist gold per level: from 5 to 0
Respawn time per level from 4 seconds to 3 seconds
Denies no longer deny experience
Uphill miss chance removed
Creeps give 1.25x of average normal mode value, no gold fluctuation
Buildings give 1.5x of average normal mode value, no gold fluctuation
Towers give global experience when killed, even to dead people, (by tower level): 150,200,250,300
Tower last hit gold bounty: from 470,520,570,620 to 300,350,400,450
Tower Team gold bounty: from 200,240,280,320 to 300,350,400,450
The amount of experience required to reach the next level increases as the game goes on. This means that at the beginning, players level up a lot faster than in Normal Mode, but in the mid and late game they level up at about the same rate as in Normal Mode.
Buyback costs are at 1.75x normal mode values
Towers' armor scales with number of players alive; Buildings have 100% of armor when all are alive, scaling to 0 armor when your entire team is dead.
From http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/change_log.html
You're wrong
There's plenty of great S2 concept art.
Bloodseeker
Arachna
Sand Wraith
I admit quite a few are a bit shabby, but there's more than one artist.
I'm not sure about exclusive but if you go on the main HoN website(Scroll down to the very bottom) you can download a "fansite" kit and it come with tons of artwork and videos.
Sorry if I came off argumentative, I'm just clumsily trying to spread information.
Electrician's mana-returning nuke is a 300 range AOE that gains him mana based on how many targets it hits (unlimited number). They do share a lot of similar spell "components" but end up filling very different roles in team fights.
Electrician: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/heroview.php?hid=9
Start with Plague Rider then. He's a relatively easy hero to start off with.
He's a support nuker with a built in deny skill that converts ally creeps into mana.
if you want to compare Pedigrees, I was around 2050 mmr @ HoN on my main account before I quit the game out of boredom and gave my three accounts to people who wanted to try it out (especially as they're all beta accounts with various benefits) http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/player_stats.php?aid=41044 Apparently MMR decayed (look at last game played...and it wasn't me it was a friend) but ratios are still here. I was semi-pro in wolfenstein:enemy territory (most played fps 2003-2006 after CS by far), played quake before that, warsow after that at a decent lvl. I didn't play much BW and was D+, which is, granted, bad, and was plat during SC2 beta where I played a lot of games with Adelscott and ToD among others (I'm french). Had no interest in taking the time to practice sc2 after that (uni work + interest in other games) so I stopped laddering altogether. I was also in the top of my country in WoW (with some world top results on worldoflogs), mostly because I love min/maxing. Then I went to LoL, which I currently love, and which is in my opinion heavily underappreciated even by those playing it a lot, mostly because they don't realize the potential moves and skillcaps you can have (same way scrubs @quake or scbw would cry watching pros). What I would give you is that currently, the LoL "pros" are really BAD compared to what we should see, but the skillcap for pros is very, very high, and the margin of error at a "pro level" is ridiculously low, having someone very slightly out of position can cost you the game(though I'm not going to go for the 50th time into a detailed "why" explanation, if you care ask me and I'll try to fetch the posts I made on TL). TL;DR : I'm also experienced and arguably pretty good at video games, and I think LoL is great and has the potential to be much greater.

Yeah, it's an awesome item! One of my top 3 favorites in the game! But I never saw it picked up enough from supports in the 1800+ bracket (even pre-nerf), so I don't understand why S2 nerfed it. According to S2's stats it's only #77 in popularity. Fucking... Assassin's shroud out ranks it! :(
Thiis Balpha guide is nice as well.
TL;DR Go mid with balpha, get level 7. Buy a shit ton of tangos and eat yourself into Hellbourne base and kill the Meatball.
They don't do the $10 sale much. You might end up waiting until Christmas. You can get a trial account here. If it's worth $30 to you than purchase an account.

It hasn't been brought back up yet, but you can see guides for heroes and make your own very easily.
Additionally you can vote on them or choose one as the default recommended items (for the olde shop), or the ingame guide for the new shop and everything else that comes with.
Haha, on my floor the most popular game seemed to be Heroes of Newerth. We actually had a few hardcore gamers that hardly left their rooms because they played nonstop.
New college goal: Join a bajillion activites
Become S2 [](/trollhound "6,800 gold coins")
But really,
I will be honest, I havent played LoL, and I never played DoTA. I cant only rate my HoN experiences and comment on what I picked up from friends who play HoN and LoL.
Most people who have played both tell me HoN is more difficult (last hit denies, more complex item system, steeper difficulty curve) BUT more rewarding and more enjoyable once you get past the first few games of not having a clue what to do and the inevitable abuse from teammates who really, wont know much more than you do.
I guess the main thing I would reccommend is the free trial. I think it's 20 nostats games for you to make your own decisions and form you own opinions.
Just ignore all the haters (/ignore add 'playername') and make sure you do the tutorial (at the very least it will give you a bit of time to play with the item system). I would also reccommend the prodex for item and hero skill builds.
Activation Deals 30 / 50 / 70 Magic Damage per second to targets in a 500 radius. Applies Elemental Void to targets in 400 radius and pulls them toward center of radius. Targets in 150 radius take a total of 60 / 100 / 140 Magic Damage per second.
While active, reveals stealthed and invisible units, including Wards, in a 900 radius. Provides 1000 day vision and 700 night vision.
