If anyone else has no clue what "DeX" is It appears to be a new samsung phone.
I feel like I'm having a case of déjà vu
Not useless if you can plug into something like the Samsung Dex, and now you have a totally capable windows PC too. I would love to have a 2 in 1 PC/Andoid device in my pocket.
One thing you might not have expected is that your phone comes with a desktop UI for free. If you plug it into any usb C display or have any hdmi adapter it will allow you to use your apps on a big screen just like a Chromebook. I've switched to my note 8 as my only computer about a year ago and I stopped using my macbook entirely instead using a large display on my desk at home and chromecasting when I don't have a cable.
My favorite aspect of the Note like is the ability to get the 512gb model for recording and editing all the videos I make for my youtube channel. I'm kind of a tech extremist but I highly reccomend you check out Samsung DeX if nothing else. https://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/apps/samsung-dex/
It's any full ARM Linux distro by the looks of it. Looks like Docker too supports ARMv8 (which I believe the Kryo 385 uses).
Your chances are good, if not a ready-made package for your distro of choice, compiling it yourself seems as though it should work.
EDIT: Kryo, not Kyro.
you don't need hdmi cable. just plug your device to macbook using your usb-c to usb-c cable and that's it. oh, of course, you should install dex application on mac. download it here
Samsung DEX alone is enough of an argument over the iPad. It'll actually transform the tablet/phone into a full fledged Linux desktop machine, rather than Apple's excuse of a "what's a computer?"
I vaguely remembered the Atrix and had to look up what made it ahead of it's time. Are you referring to the Webtop functionality?
If so how is that different than Samsung's DeX?
Either way this thread is making me nostalgic for the innovation of the last decade
Cheers, internet friend!
Your information is out of date. There is an app for windows and mac that allows you to connect your phone and run dex on your pc/laptop screen using your mouse and keyboard. https://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/apps/samsung-dex/
It's basically a docking station for Samsung phones using DeX. It has no CPU, WiFi, or processing that you'd see in a laptop. Think of it as a compact monitor with a keyboard, touchpad and I believe a battery.
DEX is by far the best option for Samsung on Windows these days. https://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/apps/samsung-dex/
I've been using it for a couple of weeks now, it's really upped my Tasker and KLWP game :)
Only drawback is that neither KLWP of KWGT are visible on DEX, you have to create the widgets and then undock from DEX to apply them.
not really no - DeX is just the software
all you need is the USB-C to HDMI to connect it to a screen and launch "DeX" mode. If you want a wired keyboard you either buy the DeX pad or multiport adapter (or HP Continuum HD-500 dock). If you just want to use any bluetooth keyboard, you don't need to worry about extra ports. With the Tablet 2 Bluetooth keyboard I get a keyboard and an optical trackpoint, plus the S10 can be put into touchpad mode. Technically you're right that the most 'secure' way is wired, and hey if you want do go through that hassle more power to you. I prefer the simplest solution with fewest cables - but in my next version of the "Brainless ThinkPad" you'll be able to plug in a ThinkPad Compact USB keyboard or use a ThinkPad Compact bluetooth keyboard (just making the 3D printed casing/enclosure now)

The screen I'm using is the original FHD panel from my T480s left over from a FHD to QHD upgrade, because the T480s FHD panels were the worst... but you can use any 30-pin eDP FHD panel with the eDP driver board I have. I'm currently looking for a 40-pin eDP driver board for a QHD (1440p) and 4K (2160p) screen. I have a QHD driver board specific to the Miix 700 / Surface Pro 3 2160x1440p screen that I'm going to test just as soon as the panel arrives from china (delayed because of the coronavirus)
> I find that those hardware specs are so impressive but with a limited screen and a tiny keyboard it's hard to truly utilise those high specs.
Samsung DeX lets you plug it into a screen and use a custom OS.
Do you have Two UI? If so you can try Dex for PC, just plug it into a PC with a USB cable and get the PC DeX app. You do have to press a button on the phone screen to approve it, should be near the bottom right corner.
The HDMI standard doesn't let you power a monitor using HDMI alone, you'd need some kind of power connection for the monitor separate from the HDMI signal cable.

> Unfortunately the HDMI standard doesn't allow for monitors powered over HDMI. I'm not aware of a video transfer standard that does actually. While HDMI does have a 5V line, it doesn't provide enough power to drive a display of any kind that I am aware of. A Google search doesn't bring anything up either.
You might try a portable monitor with a battery, like this one. Combine that with a DeX cable and you could run an external monitor without being plugged into the wall.
hum well here's the download for the windows client. not sure why it's not working if you have it installed, sorry. https://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/apps/samsung-dex/
A computer need not be involved at all. It's a standalone thing. Maybe the official link explains it better: https://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/apps/samsung-dex/
In theory you can just carry your phone around and connect it to a monitor/mouse/keyboard and it becomes your PC.
Some Android Phones support exactly what he said; they can be plugged into a dock that accepts a keyboard/mouse/monitor and can be used almost like a computer.
https://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/apps/samsung-dex/
The "almost" is key, it's still not a good development environment since you won't be able to run and test your code locally.
Not that I'm suggesting moving away from iOS, but this is actually a lot easier with Samsung Dex, which actually converts your phone into a desktop experience.
Pretty much Samsung DeX but baked into all Android 10 phones. DeX is a desktop like experience for Android (think side by side apps in a "windowed" desktop layout). You can also run a Ubuntu Desktop as a VM so you have access to Ubuntu's massive app ecosystem.
Well there is s chance it gets back-ported. Samsung needs wider DEX adoption/awareness as much as it needs to sell more new phones. So fingers crossed the balance will lean towards adoption this time, as few would seriously consider upgrading from S9 just for this feature.> learned today that Dex is available to work within windows > > unfortunately it's only available for the Note 10 & 10+. Wonder when/if it'll be made available for us. I'm leaning toward no.
Check out Dex:

Rumor mill has it that google is working on something similar for general android distributions.
Yes, but it not might happen fast and who knows what form it will have. For example Samsung pushes this idea of using smartphone as a PC: https://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/apps/samsung-dex/. If you think about it, it's also an idea to get rid of a desktop PC part. Smartphone hardware is quite decent, if you connect it to a cooling device and to a power supply it might work for many many people just fine as a desktop PC. I believe eventually monitors will go, because all that matters is delivering info into your eyes, not the form. Maybe we'll have some fancy holographic projectors, or just projectors. Maybe we'll end up using VR/AR glasses. But big things must go and they will.
You mean like a Samsung DeX? For a $100AU device, it's pretty snazzy. I think it works with Galaxy S8 and above.
EDIT: This is actually a better website, apparently there's a heap of options now! https://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/apps/samsung-dex/
(correct me if i m wrong)
unfortunately, no.
look at samsung's official site: https://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/apps/samsung-dex/
it says: [* Samsung DeX using a HDMI adapter or cable is only available on Note9 and Tab S4.]
https://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/apps/samsung-dex/
As the last bullet says only the Note9 and Tab S4 will be compatible with the HDMI Adapter or Cable. Samsung will be selling three new DeX accessories, Multiport Adapter, USB-C to HDMI Adapter, and a DeX cable (which is a USB-C to HDMI cable).
So the Note8 will not be compatible with the new accessories. However as another user has pointed out you can buy adapters from Amazon that do exactly what the Multiport Adapter, Samsung will sell, is going to do.
The newer ones on Amazon even support the Oreo version, even though some say Samsung has blocked third parties.
