What you purchased was the standalone single player game Squadron 42. The videos you see on youtube are of Star Citizen, the MMO side of it. Luckily this is an easy fix. All you need to do is log into the website, go Here, find the package you bought, click the white arrow next to it and then the button that says "exchange for store credit". That will refund your purchase and let you purchase the correct item. The packages that give you access to Star Citizen are at the bottom of this page, the Mustang Alpha and Aurora MR packages. Both packages are identical save for the starter ship you get. In terms of stats, both ships are relatively equal, but the Mustang is getting a complete visual rework to look like this.
Remember, you're entitled to a complete, no questions asked refund within your first 14 days of purchase, so be sure to do plenty of research into the game's development, and make sure you're happy with your purchase before then. If not, refund and maybe check back later.
In case any one is interested, this is a cut-away view of the medical bay module of Endeavor class spaceship, one of many larger, multi-crew ships that will eventually be available to fly in the Star Citizen universe.
The game is currently in development and available to play in a very early Alpha version. Don't back this game if you are impatient or intolerant of playing buggy alpha games. However, if you are interested in space/sci-fi games and don't mind waiting a bit for the finished game or would like to help test out the game feel free to pledge your support through the purchase of one of the available starter ships.
Here you go!
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/fly-now
Be advised the game is in an alpha state and as such is buggy, incomplete and unoptimised.
You can still get a taste for the game and try out a whole bunch of different ships but even basics are still being worked on. Do not expect a finished game for some time yet!
The "Play Now" link gives a more streamlined selection
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/play-now
But it's still confusing because they don't make it perfectly clear what you're buying or what the hangar/insurance are for.
Yeah, I agree. The How to Play section offers a lot of good information and, from what I can see, tells you most of the stuff you need to know to play the game — but the presentation of it feels overwhelming and bit unorganized.
Then you have the About the Game section, which is an ADD person's worst nightmare with its myriad of pop-ups, interactive menus, scrolling pictures, and enough links to max out your RAM with chrome tabs, lol.
Which is ironic since we don't have a more visible link to commonly-used things like the Electronic Access rental store and the StarMap.
This last website update was terrible in my opinion. It added a ton of updated information and visuals, which is great — but yeah, the presentation kind of ruins it.
The "soft launch" already happened with 3.0. If you look at the site as a newcomer you'll get the impression that Star Citizen is already a fully playable game with lots of content. > Imagine a universe that combines the freedom of exploration, the thrill of combat, and the unique challenge of building a life in space. Star Citizen puts ultimate control in the hands of the player, whether you're making your way as a cargo hauler, exploring the vastness of space, or scraping out a living outside the law, you will navigate through a mixture of procedurally generated and handcrafted worlds and interact with a variety of characters.
^Disclaimer: ^I ^have ^been ^supporting ^the ^development ^of ^Star ^Citizen ^since ^several ^years ^with ^several ^thousdand ^€
OT: No, it is definitely not in shambles. In my personal opinion Star Citizen is the victim of it's own (funding) success. SC currently has raised more than 190 million USD and thus expanded it's scope drastically. Its vision went from regular space-flight-sim to first-person MMO-Universe within a single-shard where you can land on each planet and moon you see in all the universe, seamlessless (no loading-screens).
It is still in alpha, multiple features and core-gameloops as well as core-tech (esp. regarding network-tech) are still in development. It has bugs and crashes and is definately no early-access-title. But, and that is why I continue to support the devs, they are exteremely transparent by e.g. showing their roadmap which reflects their active/closed Jira-tickets. I mean who does that? They listen to backers/players feedback.
It will take years before it's published and enters Beta status, but we can already dabble with it. It can be described as a live-game-environment withing active development.
As with all companies, big or small, the devs (Cloud Imperium Games) can fail. I simply hope they won't.
All you need is one of the two starter packages listed at the bottom of this page. Before you purchase, please make sure you properly understand the developmental state of Star Citizen and are ok with what will likely be a long and slow development process. This is NOT a finished game, it is buggy, performance isn't great, and it's missing features. All that aside, if you're sure you want to try it out, those two packages, and anything else on the store that says "Game Package" and lists "Star Citizen Digital Download" as included will give you game access.
If you're already able to log into the RSI website, you should see a "play now" button that takes you to https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/play-now. Go there and see what you can see.

> That you for the awesome response!
You're welcome.
> By sale i mean discounted, will it be discounted to tomorrow?
CIG uses the word "sale" to mean "available for purchase", not "at a discount". Don't expect any discounts unless they are "warbond" versions of newly revealed ship concepts. (Warbond just means that you can't use store credit to purchase it, which you won't have to worry about since you're new.)
> And what about the third starter pack (i don’t know what ship it is)? On the site i only have 2 options for starter packs
The Mustang and the Aurora are the two most basic starter packs which is why they're the two that pop up at first. Any of these packages (with the exception of the Squadron 42 Standalone Pledge), however, will get you the same access to Star Citizen. The "third one" that you're referring to is the MISC Reliant, but I would recommend against it because it's extremely overpriced for its capabilities.
That is literally what an alpha is.
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/play-now
> While Star Citizen is currently in the Alpha stage of development, it is playable now. New content, features, and fixes are consistently added as development continues, with a major patch released each quarter.
CIG also considers the Reliant a starter doesn't change my statement.
When someone new to the game tries to buy the game for the first time just the plain starter package they choose between the Aurora and Mustang, what I and more than a few others want is that choice to be extended to a 3rd ship with no extra costs or steps.
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen
On that page when you scroll down you'll see the prepare for flight choices. That is where the 3rd starter needs to be.
Not a $71.50 100i pack.
If you follow event a little part of what they show and release you can see that it is a game in the middle of development, so things are broken and things will break, but if you can handle an alpha (meaning the game is being build) it is quite solid.
Performance and stability have improved a lot and after every big quarterly patch it is getting better.
Content wise it is getting some but most of it are first iterations. You can mine (with ship and on foot), trade, do delivery work, bounty hunting, patrol missions, blow stuff up in general, recovery missions (black box or dead people)...
There are a few scripted missions like "clear this bunker of hostiles and recover a safe", "find this downed satellite and recover a specified electronic chip you then have to activate somewhere else" or "there is a huge drug stash there destroy it/get as much as you can".
There is a free flight event from November 24th through December 5th, so you still have time to try yourself (link)
Most of the issues the game and its development have (many of them valid) are overblown by the armies of trolls and white knights attacking/defending the game. It is the usual internet drama. That is why the SC related post in this sub's fronpage is about how much money they have made and not about the prison gameplay, the economy simulations that will make the game universe make some sense or the tech involved in creating solar systems with planets and moons you can land on without loading screens.

Maybe you need the definition of Eidonomy: >Eidonomy is the study of the external appearance of an organism. It is thus the opposite of anatomy, which refers to internal morphology. While predominant early in the history of biology, eidonomy is little studied in particular anymore as it is rife with the effects of convergent evolution, or evolution of similar features from distant organism varieties. It thus yields less new information about organisms than anatomy, and therefore the external appearance of lifeforms is usually studied as part of general investigations in morphology, e.g. in the context of phylogenetic research.

You need a "starter package" that includes a copy of Star Citizen, it happens to include one of two ships but the copy of the game is essential for access: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/play-now
Ah, according to the fellow Redditor, looks like you bought the "wrong" game package. To summarize what others are saying, there are two games: 1) Star Citizen, and 2) Squadron 42.
Looks like to pledged for Squadron 42, but you want to play Star Citizen.
In order to play Star Citizen without needing to pay any additional fees, you need to refund your Squadron 42 Game Package for Store Credit. To do that, you will need to log into the RSI webpage, go to your Account, and go to My Hangar. Look for your Squadron 42 package and refund it for Store Credit. Then go to the Pledge Store on the website, look for a "Star Citizen" Game Package, then purchase it using your Store Credit.
Here is a link to two Star Citizen Starter Packs you can refer to:
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/fly-now
I hope this was helpful.
I recommend anyone purchasing the game for the first time during this anniversary sale gets the Pisces starter pack with LTI.
To get the pack with Squadron 42 added for only $20 you can choose the C8X option on this page:
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/fly-now
If you ever decide to upgrade to a bigger ship, you will be glad you caught this LTI token when available, plus it's a starter pack so it comes with the game itself.
If you need a referral code use the randomizer here on Reddit or dm me and I will give you mine.
You need to get a starter pack first:
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/fly-now
I recommend the Mustang Alpha. See how that fits you. If you want something a little beefier, I'd do a cross chassis upgrade to an Avenger.
I'd recommend spending $45 to start plus adding the Squadron 42 single player game for $15. Try out different ships during the sale and see which ones you like.
You can get the Hornet and Squadron 42 into a package, but it takes a bit of work. Start at the page where you can pledge for a Mustang or Aurora, and grab the Mustang Alpha starter package, and attach Squadron 42, and pay. Now you have game access. To turn your Mustang Alpha into an F7C Hornet, you'll navigate to the Ship Upgrades page, and select your Mustang from the left hand tab. Select the Hornet (or other preferred ship) from the right hand side, and then you will be given a CCU, or cross-chassis upgrade. This will cost the difference between a Mustang standalone ship and a Hornet. This saves you $5 US because the Mustang has a slightly higher trade-in value than the aurora when it comes to store-credit related affairs like CCU's. For the Hornet, this CCU will run you about $80. Now that you have your CCU, navigate to the "My Hangar" tab in the upper right, and select your CCU. Apply it to your Mustang to turn your Mustang Alpha into an F7C Hornet and presto, you have game access to both star citizen and Sq42, and your hornet. Enjoy!

Forget about stories of spaceships that cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars: A 45 dollar starter package from their main website is all you will ever need for the multiplayer game. Be sure to use a random referral code for free in-game credits.
Be aware when you install it though. It's basically an empty tech demo atm, albeit an impressive one.
Free fly starts at 2pm PST, according to the FAQ and your friend should go to https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/play-now instead.

Don't forget to give them your referral code or direct them to this subreddit's code randomizer.
You will need to melt that package and then use the store credit to buy a Star Citizen package $45 or a combo package $65.
Try using the Fly Now page.
The Mustang package is better because it has higher value for upgrading and you will get a loaner Aurora.
Welcome.

It depends on the fire rate of the weapon you are using.
A Mustang Alpha with M4As will be Fire rate 75/min.
You can replace them with Laser Repeaters like the CF-227 Badger with 300/min.
Yes definitly :). And no the game is standalone. You can register an account and have to buy a ship for real money and off you go. There are starter packs for around $50 that give you access to 3 ships or you can look thru the vast ship database and buy your own. About half of the ships and its variants are in game yet. Here is a goog wrap up on the process: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/howto/1 Welcome to the verse :). My ingame moniker is entropie, can add me if you want :)
Start with this:
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/fly-now
This should walk you through creating an account and getting one of the 2 basic starter packages which include the game and a ship for $45 ($60 if you throw in the SQ42 singleplayer as well. Just note this won't even enter beta until 2020)
It does not realistically take anything more than that to play. Most people are willing to lend you ships to try if you just ask in chat. I for one personally love giving tours of ships I own, places around the verse, explaining basic concepts on how to play, and letting other people use my ships.
And there are plenty of people out there who do the same :)
You JUST missed a free weekend!
Off the back of that, the starter packs are $10 off right now.
CIG use the word "sale" to mean "currently available", and the word "warbond" to mean "discount for not using store credit".
Yup, $35 to be able to play all the alpha builds. I'd pick the Aurora MR https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/fly-now
If you like single player games, that link let's you add Squadron 42 to your purchase for $20, if you want
EDIT: $35 gets you the full copy of Star Citizen forever. That's all you will need to be able to eventually earn every ship in the game. In game purchasing of ships for in game money is not implemented yet, but it will be soon once ship dealerships have been created on the upcoming planets
Welcome back citizen!
Thanks for this. I always love reading these. They are also helpful for the developers. You're going to have to try other stuff and give us your experiences.
Some Suggestions:
There's also exciting things coming: View the schedule to see 3.3 features planned (scheduled to release in 84 days). 3.3 is likely to introduce big stuff like features that improve performance, add FPS combat AI, add the first landable planet, more moons, and a bunch of other features.
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/fly-now
That's an Aurora or Mustang with access to SC, and no other payment required to play.
If you want SQ42 on release you can add that too from the same page.
Remember that the game is very much in alpha. So bad performance, crashes and bugs will happen. And the game will be in development for a long time. Tread lightly, and there's no need to rush to get into it.
It gets tricky with laptops. The game wants to run natively on your intel graphics card. Change this in the nvidia settings.
There are a ton of videos on YouTube. Also there’s a new player guide on the RSI site that talks you through it. Find it here
Edit: also post your specs of the laptop. Knowing your graphics card, ram, hdd or SDD and CPU will help us help you.
The only warning on the play now page (https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/play-now) is one sentence in grey subtext that reads:
>"While Star Citizen is currently in the Alpha stage of development, it is playable now."
The criticism that is being voiced here is that this specific feature will mean that the game may no longer be considered "playable now" based on how this will interact with pre-existing issues. I don't think that's an illegitimate concern for people in this context. It's okay to like a product overall and provide critical feedback on specific decisions that you don't like as a customer, it's not zero-sum.
Also, most of the company revenue comes from their sales of in-game ships and items, so most people do buy things... hundreds of millions of dollars worth of things in fact. And they, like you, are not "investors." They, like you, are customers rebranded as investors to make them feel engaged. You paid money for a game, you didn't invest money for a stock share of the company.
>actually you don't "play" game now
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/play-now
>play-now
You should tell this to CIG, because they don't know it.
Don't forget to asked why they balance guns and ships nearly every patch and "waste time", as you say it.
Here are the official minimum specifications. When it says "SSD strongly recommended" you should assume it says "required" because an HDD is a bad time.
Cherry-picking is ironically exactly what you're doing by finding mentions of 'sim' buried in subsections of pages. I'm literally giving you the MAIN descriptions that new players see first by using google or navigating to the website.
Seriously, if you can't grasp this concept, pretend you just heard about 'Star Citizen'. Google it. Notice the description on the right. Interest grows. Navigate to website and click on SC. See the brief description here:
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen
Then you're presented with 'Start your journey today' which takes you to the package purchasing page. Then you're playing the game. The person has not read 'sim' once, and they are in-game. Because of this, CIG has to cater to this person otherwise it's false advertising. It's that simple.
Why isn't 'sim' mentioned on the first description that new players read about the game before buying it?
You'll want to create an account on the website (use a referral code for a little bit of ingame currency - there's a randomizer on the sidebar or you could get a code from a friend or content creator) and pick up any game package. The "fly now" page currently has links to discounted packages (due to the recent holidays) with two of the more popular ships, and there's more options on the store.
To play the game right now, any package that lists "Star Citizen Digital Download" in its contents will work. I personally would recommend one of the Titan packages - there's one for $60 currently that will get you the multiplayer game that we have now, and another one for $80 that will also the singleplayer campaign once it's ready.
I read through most of the comments and here are some helpful things that I think may not have been touched on yet. (Unless i missed them when reading through so apologies if its already been said)
First off, we're super excited to have a newcomer and even more excited that you are asking questions first rather than pledging then bitching that its not a complete game like so many people to kudos to you.
While the game has been optimized a lot lately you should check out star citizen telemetry to help you get an idea of what kind of hardware your pc needs to run the game because its still kind of intense.
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/telemetry
You should also check out the Q&A thread on this subreddit thats always stickied at the top. Any questions you have, ask there, people usually answer pretty quickly.
Star citizens official website also just gives a lot of pretty good explanations of the overall plans for the game all in one place. The site is a little bit overdesigned but it still has good info.
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen
And heres the link for the Squadron 42 page which is the single player campaign game that takes place in the Star Citizen universe that is scheduled for beta this time next year
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/squadron42
Once you go through the RSI stuff i recommend you then look at user made content on youtube so you can get a better idea of where the game is in progress now.
There is a "How to play" section.
There's a whole playlist of tutorials. and other have made some on YouTube.
it's the f7a they use this image since the new website
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen

see what the mustang chase.
They made a tutorial 3 years ago but because everything change and evolve constantly, it became useless very rapidly :/ You have everything you need on the website to help you. Remember it is a sim game and not a arcade one. It mean so many things to learn to understand the game. Even at this stage :) https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/howto/1
> Isn't Star Citizen and Squadron42 a bundle for $65? That would be the cheapest currently, right?
Do you have a link? I can't find it.
I was looking at the starter packs for $54.45:
Are you trying to get 3.3 or 3.3.5? To play 3.3 you just go here: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/fly-now
To play 3.3.5 you will have to wait until it is in on the public PTU, go to your account settings page and copy your account to the PTU, then download the PTU client and log in.
I was looking this page:
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/fly-now
Here you can choose between Mustang Alpha and Aurora MR. This morning it was at 45$.
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/fly-now
Be aware that the game is very much in alpha. Bugs, crashes, adjustments, optimisations and a mountain of content still to make is par for the course. Do as much research on the game as possible before you think of pledging. And pay close attention to the high system requirements.
Windows 7 (64bit) with Service Pack 1, Windows 8 (64bit), Windows 10 - Anniversary Update (64bit) DirectX 11 Graphics Card with 2GB RAM (4GB strongly recommended) Quad Core CPU 16GB+ RAM SSD strongly recommended
Has been official for atleast a year now: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/fly-now
Seriously. SSD. This game is not like other games. Chris Roberts games always max out on technology, and since this is in alpha it's a LONG way from being optimized. 16-32GB recommended.
See the requirements for the game at the bottom of this page:
>Should I be able to run the game well?
Compared to a similarly early development Alpha game that you're also able to play.. yes.
Compared to a released title or even 'Steam Early Access'.. no.
Some enjoy reasonable frame rates while others struggle with choppy performance.. there are several optimization passes scheduled as well as new code/tech aimed at improving performance but the majority of those are towards the end of this calendar year.
>what package should I get
I'd recommend either of the Starter packs as you get the entire game upon release as well as access to the playable Alpha/Beta during development for $45 - it is expected that upon release the price could very well increase to be more in line with current AAA games.
Any and all pledge packages beyond that (ships) are purely for the purpose of further supporting development.
CIG have stated that all ships purchasable as pledge packages now will be obtainable in-game post-release using nothing but in-game currency (UEC) so there really is no obligation to spend more than $45.. unless you want to.
>what can I do in the game?
The FAQ has a lot of up to date information on what is currently available in SC A3.1.
For a quick list: flying, space/air combat, ground combat, planetary exploration, basic cargo transport and a few scripted missions are all currently available (among other things).
>Any advice for me?
Pace yourself and keep your expectations within reality's confines - the finished product has a lot of potential and we all hope it will fulfill all of that.. but there is a lot needing to be done between now and then.
At the moment the PC Requirements are:
Windows 7 (64bit) with Service Pack 1, Windows 8 (64bit), Windows 10 - Anniversary Update (64bit)
DirectX 11 Graphics Card with 2GB RAM (4GB strongly recommended)
Quad Core CPU
16GB+ RAM
SSD strongly recommended
If your RAM has Dual Channel, then it is most likely a combination of your CPU and no SSD.
Because I get 20-30 FPS in the PU with the following system:
win10 pro 64bit
i5-4690k @3.50-3.90GHz
8 GB DDR3-1600 Dual Channel RAM
AMD R9 390 (8 GB)
SSD
If recently listed for another user some tips which i made to improve performance, maybe it will help you too. But i doubt a high performance increase. SSD seems too important at the moment.
You can find the list with performance tips here: https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comments/8cp0ry/so_all_you_free_flyers_out_there_this_past/dxh4gb8/
If you want to upgrade, i would only recommend a SSD, everything else is money waste in my opinion. I would at least wait ~2 years for a full PC upgrade (if it is for Star Ciitzen).
Good luck!
EDIT: Also don't forget that most of these lags, freezes and crashes are server related (good explanation in this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comments/8cjgnr/31_stuttering_fix/dxfevcr/), so not much you can do in terms of PC upgrades / tweaks.
Officially recommended specs from https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen
Ah, well, because there's a reservation page I can throw money at it must certainly not be vaporware. Hey look, you can also buy Star Citizen if you're into that kind of stuff: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/play-now
Subscriptions in this game are optional to cover the cost of their video releases, etc. More like subscribing to a Youtube channel than subscribing to something like World of Warcraft. The game isn't a subscription to play.
To play the game, you need to buy a game package
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/play-now when you create your account and buy a package until tomorrow put the referral in STAR-2VXC-DRBY ( if you have a friend that plays take his because you and him will get a free Argo cargo) if not that is my buddies Jacks code then you get one also and technically you can do that but you should start with a small ship because even personal pirate or illegal missions are sometimes between moons but you can also try hardcore version and not use your ship and try to get someone in game to fly you like an Uber for a payment. I would do it for example since I have almost all ships anyways
That would be the most expensive, and also most lukrative tech demo i've ever seen. I think the commonly accepted definition of what alpha, beta and "tech demo" is, is really straight forward, there's not much to confuse here.
CIG: "While Star Citizen is currently in the Alpha stage of development, it is playable now. New content, features, and fixes are consistently added as development continues, with a major patch released each quarter. "
To put it simple: simple things are bad, because they are simple. And that is simply fine.

>I’m not sure official system spec requirements have ever been communicated.
The have, here.
Though they're a bit outdated as 3 (or 4) GB graphics memory are a bit low (for me the game is using at least 6GB). But OP should still be fine.
You can send him here and he can click on the link where it says DL. If he doesn’t have an account, I think he’ll get a prompt on the next page to “Enlist”. Seems pretty simple but YMMV.
Oh that, I thought you where talking about something like my ships upside down and I’ll lose all my prized gear w/it unless I call for help and wait to be robbed which is where I’d just trash the game.
As far as exploring, I did find some info on exploring on this page if you scroll down a bit there’s an ‘ exploration tab ‘ that mentions what this loop would be like.
Recommended specs:
Direct from the site.
As for telemetry data, people average 27.1 fps at the minimum line. So yes, people are getting well below 30 fps regularly (because 27.1 is an average, not a constant). Even up a line or two, people are still only averaging about 30-33 fps, which means they regularly dip below (and above).
Even people with ballistic rigs are only averaging 50 at the top of the telemetry graph (outliers excluded).
But I will confirm that empty servers sky rocket performance. I often play at really late hours when servers drop to like 10-12 people. My FPS usually sees a 50-75% increase consistently at low-load servers.
I hope they figure that shit out sometime this generation. If they want server-meshing to work with thousands of people... Ha.
>They do say it, repeatedly though.
Do you have link on main website that states this?
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/play-now
>While Star Citizen is currently in the Alpha stage of development, it is playable now. New content, features, and fixes are consistently added as development continues, with a major patch released each quarter.
It does not say "all your progress may get wiped at any moment".
And new players don't watch all 1hr long videos scince 2013.
No, he paid money to play game, as it stated on main page.
Previously there was disclaimer: play alpha version, etc...
Only if you go to https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/fly-now
It says:
>While Star Citizen is currently in Alpha version, it is playable now. New content, features, and fixes will be consistently released as development continues.
It does not say that anyone who buy this is QA tester. It clearly says that SC is playable now.
>Star Citizen 3.11 is currently available to download and play.
It also does not say that you are funding game development and get access to alpha and ship as "thank you" gift. CIG sell game packages and ships.
You can find the official requirements near the bottom of this page: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/fly-now
It says "SSD strongly recommended", but that's really a requirement. Your framerate will be terrible without one.
I don't think there are official recommended specs, but you can check out this public telemetry data to see what framerate people are getting with different systems: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/telemetry
Been a long time since I bought into the game; but I believe for Star Citizen you buy one of the game packaged starter ships that has Star Citizen digital download attached: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/fly-now
Correct link for starters : https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen
The one /u/Trematode shared is not the cheapest "true starter" entry but (certainly) the most popular one. That said it is not required by any means. Also keep in mind there are starter packs with or without Squadron 42 included (the upcoming single player mode).
I would suggest you to look at video from Morphologis on youtube, he has great videos for beginners, including how to chose a starter package.
Also check https://robertsspaceindustries.com/telemetry if you want to see how well your computer will perform.
EDIT:
-Holy smokes... looks like they did make it warbond only on the pledge page. But... i did it through the "Fly Now" button when i did it.
Apologies... when i bought the package with store credit, the "pledge page version" went to an error screen, so i did it through the "Fly Now" section, and was able to use store credit. I don't know if that still works or not, as it does not say "warbond" anywhere on that page.

Good timing, SC is now free to play until 2nd on June so you can try it without spending any money. If you like it you can buy a starter pack for $45-65 and after that rent/buy other ships in game.
As for comparison, yes SC is much more diverse than Elite. Especially if you play with friends. Apart from the usual stuff yo can do in Elite and other space sims (mining, trading, doing space missions) here you can mine on foot, do FPS missions on moons or on ships (or combined ones where you take out ships first then get in a ship to clear it out), get into prison if you misbehave, go to ingame ship expo, explore the beautiful moons and planets on foot or with a wheeled vehicle, etc.
The game is gorgeous, and many times breathtaking, but it's still in development so there are plenty of bugs, and it's not complete yet.
So as i said if you want you can download and play now for free..be ready tho that over this free period many people trying it and usually braking the servers daily :) So patience.
Just go here and click on the free fly event:

There is a free fly event going on right now! You can play the game completely free while the event is happening (ends June 2nd), and see for yourself! No better way to decide if it's worth jumping into than seeing it firsthand.

Cant miss the line * SSD strongly recommended
Is it free to try for new players during the invictus event?
"To celebrate Invictus Launch Week, we’re hosting a Free Fly of epic proportions! All you need to do is sign up for an account, download the game, and you’re set to play for free for the duration of the event. Most ships on display are available to test-fly for free, so just select the ship you want, and take to the skies."
New to Star Citizen?
"Want to try out the Empire's most epic ships and vehicles at this year's Invictus Launch Week celebration? Just create an RSI account <strong>here</strong>, and go <strong>here</strong> to choose a starter package and download the launcher. See you in the 'verse!"
Am confused send help plz?
The minimum requirements are given on the Fly Now page, at the bottom:
>###PC REQUIREMENTS
Windows 7 (64bit) with Service Pack 1, Windows 8 (64bit), Windows 10 - Anniversary Update (64bit)
DirectX 11 Graphics Card with 2GB RAM (4GB strongly recommended)
Quad Core CPU
16GB+ RAM
SSD strongly recommended
I don't think the game will actually allow you to launch it on only 8GB of RAM, but with 16GB it should be very playable though it might chug in cities. You will need to make sure you've closed anything using lots of RAM, like browsers, before you launch SC - because it uses close to 16GB of RAM by itself and it'll run the computer out of memory if you have Chrome open hogging 4GB.
Playable depends on your tolerance level and comprehension of what "alpha" means.
I enjoy it.
Where we are is mostly unanswerable. At a minimum it depends if you're talking PU or S42, but even then they don't reveal all of their goals or all of their progress so there's no way to know.
They produced a series of guides which you could watch to learn where to begin and make a cursory decision of whether it was right for your pandemic entertainment needs. https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/howto/2
It's more polished than a lot of games in alpha, early access. I say that for comparison purposes only. Alpha is absolutely not the same thing as early access!
Most significantly, is it worth your time... I suppose that too is subjective. Things change, that can be neat or that can be frustrating. Learning to fly only to have the flight model change or the keybinds change... if you suspect that will bother you, stay away. With new patches, there can be wipes of some or all of the data meaning time you spend and money you accumulate can vanish. We just had a patch drop so you're probably 3 months away from that happening -- if it happens. There are stability complaints about 3.9... I'd probably watch the how to videos and other content creators and make my decision based on that and if you're in no hurry wait until the first point release in the 3.9 branch.
It should be playable on those specs. We have similar machines. I have a 3700x and a 1080ti, the bits you didn't offer were whether you have an SSD drive. You absolutely must install the game on SSD or you'll throw your keyboard across the room. Ram quantity can also be a factor, it's better now than it had been and different folks will offer different opinions. I have 32gb, but I wouldn't say it's required.
Just to make sure...
You do have a game package that includes 'Star Citizen' don't you? If you bought a standalone ship with no game package you can't access the game servers.
Go to the Fly Now page to check if you're unsure.
You might be surprised how many don't realise they need a game package as well as a ship.
Are you trying to access the PTU? Did you copy your main account over to the PTU servers? https://starcitizen.fandom.com/wiki/Public_Test_Universe
By your definition its not beginner friendly. But i personally love sandbox games where i log in some place and can do whatever you want and go anywhere i want. Nevertheless i understand many players need "tutorial babysitting". SC is complex not finished game and there are very few basic tutorials. But when you have time for exploring game, you will be fine. :)
>Then the universe would feel much smaller. I don't think you're going to find many people that agree with you on this.
Yes it would, I did not say it wouldn't. I was merely pointing out that it is not necessary.
>Only one 's' in asinine, chief. I agree, though. Most people are going to want to QT. An epiphany, for sure.
I'm not an English teacher and I dont care about grammar. Reverting to pointing out grammatical errors because you dont have good arguments I suppose.
>I'm all for eating and drinking. Just not a death timer associated with it.
I agree with you to an extent. There should be negative side effects of ignoring basic needs. Death should come eventually, but other things need to happen first as other have said.
>It doesn't fit with the spirit of SC. If you like that kind of thing, maybe you should play The Forest. Star Citizen is about space adventures. You can read about it here: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen
Some may consider eating exotic foods or having drinks from different parts of the universe part of the adventure. It's just a mechanic to accompany those types of items.
>The sci-fi part is refueling your SPACE SHIP. Do I need to make that font bigger or is caps sufficient?
What about eating SPACE FRUIT AND VEGGIES? I mean they are sci-fi consumables. Odd plants and fruits that are edible that aren't from earth. You can't argue that. This makes eating and drinking just as much sci-fi as refueling.
>But it's sci-fi and cool.
That's a terrible argument.
The only thing I'm really trying to point out is that it's just a mechanic and it's quite a forgiving one if you only need to eat or drink every few hours. If you can die from weather effects (too hot/too cold) because you're not wearing the correct gear you should be able to die from not drinking anything for XX hours/days. If they make it a chore then that's when I'll be against it.
First, we’ve updated the “Fly Now” page with a limited time promotion of our most affordable multicrew ship, the Reliant Kore. With superior weaponry and greater cargo capability than the Aurora MR, it’s the perfect starter ship for ambitious new players.
Get into the spirit of the season with two romantic competitions and some spicy limited time offers of some of the most beloved ships in the ‘verse, coming next week. We’ve already kicked off our annual “Be My Valentine” Card Contest and there’s still time to enter.
It doesn't matter how many times 'sim' is mentioned when it's buried. Why are the main summaries on the wiki page and the website devoid of the word 'sim', if they are the ones new players see first? If CIG wanted to make sure everyone knew it was a sim, before giving them a choice to buy a package, why would they hide 'sim'?
Sign up and buy a game package here:

Use the community referral code randomizer to get yourself and someone else a small bonus:
You have to buy the game in the form of a game package. That comes with your first ship that you can't ever lose (due to insurance). When you play, you can earn ingame currency to rent/buy further ships. Yes, it's 100% possible to work up your way to any other ship (but it can take a long time).
Game packages are available here: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/fly-now
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/fly-now Go for the C8X since it has the better insurance, is the cutest lil ship in the verse and will let you try out most gameplay (combat will be a bit sketchy in this one as its shields are pretty pathetic). People spending more are buying and or upgrading to stand alone ships that can be very expensive but aren't needed to play and enjoy the game (especially now since you can earn in-game space monies to rent or buy most of the other ships in the game).
I've found that Googling often gives you answers to how it used to work, like 5-6 patches ago. It's hard to find current information about early access games like SC.
This is a good resource, if you are having trouble finding answers elsewhere: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/howto/1
$60 gets you the C8X Starter Package with Life Time Insurance and Squadron 42. Best starting deal and super cheap for what you get. (LTI is not generally available).
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/fly-now
If you think you'd enjoy this game and the SQ42 single player eventually anyway, might as well get in now "for cheap". The game is in a really good state currently and has some amazing features coming up Soon.™
You will be able to get everything in game so other than your initial game package you don't have to spend real money for anything in game, but you can. :) Doesn't really give you an advantage though just helps development and saves you money grinding time.
I recommend everyone use this link if they actually want to try out Star Citizen: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/fly-now

Says it right on the bottom. Impossible to miss. And if you have poor eyesight and somehow missed it, not actively looking for PC requirements before you purchase a game makes you a bad consumer. You got what you deserved. Do you due diligence and get some basic research done before you throw money at something in the future.

I still think star citizen should be first person ~only.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cig/star-citizen/description
> A rich universe focused on epic space adventure, trading and dogfighting in first person.
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen
> YOUR FIRST-PERSON UNIVERSE
>~<only because some 3rd person could be nice for photographic and cinematic purposes. but definitely in a way that makes it impossible to misuse, e.g. by having a camera drone fly around.
1) There are multiple video tutorials out there, both official and unofficial, plus a "How to Play?" page as well. Literally 10 seconds of Google will find you these.
2) Spawning ships in the hangar is a much older mechanic, but you can't summon them from a single screen like in the PU because then how would you summon multiple ships in your hanger in different areas to check them out altogether? There are different sized areas it will spawn different ship sizes in your hangar, where this does not happen in the PU, it gives you 1 pad assignment and any subsequent ship you spawn will replace the former. That's not a restriction in the hangar last time I saw.
3) Like with many other Sims, you first must request landing permission, you don't just come and land wherever you want to. There is a Communications screen in your cockpit that when you are close enough to a landing Zone will present a so-and-so Landing services contact, click that to request landing. Watching literally any video that anyone has made showing landing would have shown you this brief step. Closed hangars likewise require takeoff permission in the same manner for them to open the doors.
4) Okay? It's not No Man's Sky, skill is involved to play. However, as mentioned in 1) above, there are multiple places to learn from and there are also Pence you can turn on, they are actually enabled by default IIRC. Pay attention to them.
The official video tutorials are not bad either to help ease you into it - here's the official site for them (https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/howto/1) and the playlist itself (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCm1VJ6ip44&list=PLVct2QDhDrB0SV9hTuNIRuzpsiRph7ezG&index=2)
