I thought it was some sort of Microsoft decision, to make Windows laptops user-friendlier, i.e. copying Macs where afaik the Fx-keys also work like this. Of course power users (those who need Fx-keys) have to suffer.
I have such a stupid Lenovo keyboard, but I change it in the BIOS and am not worried about it. For volume I use Volumouse, configured so I can change the volume by holding the right alt key and rotating the mouse wheel.
At a lower level, <strong>SharpKeys</strong> lets you directly remap any key (it's a run-once app that simply modifies the registry), including media functions. For example, I remapped my useless capslock key to mute.
If you want a more analog volume control, check out Nir Sofer's <strong>Volumouse</strong> utility which lets you use a keyboard modifier with the mousewheel (e.g. shift + scroll) to modify the volume. Very customizable, too.
Good question! I wish you could directly bind it to other functions than scroll, such as volume when watching video. (Doing that now with <strong>Volumouse</strong>, but it's not application specific.)
Second this, for sure. Bind your Shift button (where the thumb rests) to whatever modifier you use to make the wheel control the volume—I actually just use Shift
—and then you can do this all from the mouse.
Bonus Tip: Use SharpKeys to remap your Caps Lock
key to mute. You never actually use that anyway.
I also have a Xonar DG and I use Volumouse, http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/volumouse.html , to control my volume. You just assign whatever buttons you like to control the volume (i press and hold ctrl and then use the mouse scroll to adjust volume).
Btw, does anyone know if there is any way to change the output of a Xonar card in a easier way, like a system tray icon or such? So you don't have open the Xonar control panel every time.
Volumouse is my top must-have-app. This definitely should've been built into Windows. It makes it possible to control the volume by hovering over the taskbar and scrolling the wheel.
Also: Everything, Launchy, Unlocker, ClipboardFusion, SugarSync
Download volumouse and get an instant shortcut to volume control. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/volumouse.html (eg, Alt + scroll wheel = profit). I find it really helpful in games when using headphones without a inline.
I can't think of a solution that would give you this behavior directly in foobar2000 itself, locking the scroll-wheel to just volume control would surely impact foobar2000's usability in a negative way for most people since it's often used for other things.
That said, my quick google search to see if something like this did exist brought me to Volumouse it's an external piece of software, but does provide the functionality you are looking for.
I've been using a utility called Volumouse for ages. I have mine set to [Alt]+mousewheel. It's really handy when you have music blaring and someone walks in and you need to hush the system ASAP. I find it especially useful when running fullscreen apps.
I can confirm it works with Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit). Hope that helps!
Hey guys, here are some not so common utilities for Windows. I actively search high and low for freeware and here are a few that help improve my workflow, and these are what I've found. Enjoy! Oops, just noticed the free part, so I deleted some listings
Utilities:
QTTabBar – Add tabs to your explorer. If you work in Explorer a lot this is a must. You can drag and drop files to a different tab. There is also a neat tooltip option you can enable to mouseover files and see their text or image content.
Volumouse – Quickly adjust volume just by scrolling up or down with your mouse scroller over your desired location. I have mine on my superbar and it has become second nature.
NetSpeedMonitor – This monitor sits in your superbar and allows you to see specifically if there is any network traffic coming through. I often see widgets with this kind of support, but why widgets when you can have it available in view at all times with this program? :)

A bonus tip for those in Windows 7: You can save your searches (like "*.png") to the navigation pane in explorer. To do that, make your query in the searchbox, and click and drag the icon to the left of the addressbar into the navigation pane to your left. Sort your search by date and now you have an easy way of seeing all files on your harddrive by
Ah that's a shame. I'm afraid fixing that is well above my knowledge level.
There is another way to go about it but it is not as elegant I'm afraid. https://forum.level1techs.com/t/using-keyboard-shortcuts-to-control-per-application-volume-even-in-games/157324
A third possible way might be to use Nirsoft volumouse http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/volumouse.html I think that might let you set rules on a per application basis (I don't know if the application window has to be active so that might be a deal breaker). However if this did what you needed then you wouldn't need ahk and could just assign the encoders on your macro pad the appropriate mouse input in your QMK keymap (remember to enable mouse buttons in your rules.)
If it turns out the ahk method is the only way that does exactly what you need this post on stack overflow might help https://stackoverflow.com/questions/38433170/autohotkey-how-to-adjust-volume-only-of-a-specific-program If all else fails your best best is to try posting on the ahk subreddit or their help forum.
I use a program called VoluMouse to add the ability to move your mousewheel while over the taskbar to adjust your volume level. You can adjust how much each "step" changes the volume when using the mousewheel there at least. There's also a bunch of different options for how you can change the volume between mousewheel+taskbar.
On a side note, this short write-up is related.
You didn't reveal the use case, does it have to be for Twitch only or can be volume in general? I used Volumouse in the past, it will need some customization to make it comfortable with your wheel settings, but it works pretty well.
EDIT: Typos.
Volumouse looks to support "per application" audio levels. See HERE and observe that the screenshot with blue around it shows "for specified .exe file". Nirsoft's page mentions "If from some reason, you want to change only one channel separately - you can use the 'Left Channel' and 'Right Channel' options."
I'm pretty partial to Volumouse.
Once you get it set up, you just leave it on in the background and it allows you control your volume by holding down left click and scrolling. Or holding down shift and scrolling. You can set it to activate any way you want. It works great for turning something up or down quickly no matter what you're doing and it doesn't interrupt your flow.
For everyone having problems with low input levels in Windows 8 or 10:
What you and everyone needs is Volumouse, a free, old school simple windows program to configure sound volume/mute by completely customizable hotkey/mouse scrolling.. The BEST part is the HideThisApp plugin which allows for a quick hotkey combo or mouse wheel to completely hide a window. You can not show the icon in systemtray also.
Browsing reddit, someone enters, there's no clutsy alt esc, there's no hand change at all really. Just ctrl+scroll down and boom, a very fast transition, incremental, or instant transparent window entirely. No minimizing. Program "vanishes", even out of the taskbar. Pretty sweet if you ask this tech dude.
I'm late to the party, but after a fresh Windows install, Volumouse is always one of my first installs. It helps you control volume with just your mouse. I have mine set up to where left click + scroll adjusts volume and right click + scroll mutes/unmutes. There are lots of other functions too.
I had a couple Logitech G series boards before I bought my filco. The only thing I really missed were the media keys and volume control. I used volumouse to take care of volume control and actually prefer it now (scroll wheel controls volume level when pointer is on the boarder of the screen). As for media keys you can map them using the many available applications.
Other then that, the macro keys are an advantage if you actually make use them, and the back light if you're into that.
I know this solution isn't directly firefox related but...
I used to use foxytunes just for the volume control a while back. Then compatibility broke for a while in a previous FF update and I found this instead. Now I don't use foxytunes any more. I have it set up so that if the mouse pointer is over the taskbar the wheel controls the volume, but there are quite a few ways of setting the program up.
I think we'll need your computer's model name and number. It is most likely a keyboard driver/software issue. Asus computers, for instance, have a process which listens for the 'hotkey' presses to control system functions. If you do a restore and don't reinstall it, you can't control these functions via keyboard.
As for mouse, what do you mean? Do you mean using a program like Volumouse, or do you mean you cannot use the default Windows audio control to adjust volume? If the latter is the case, then your sound driver may be experiencing problems, or in the worst case, your sound hardware has failed (though you should not hear anything if that were the case).
Launchy! I don't like mucking with the start menu, or going to my desktop just to launch a program. Instead, I activate Launchy, start typing the name of a program I want to launch, hit enter, and away we go! You can set Launchy to check folders for files and programs to run, and even do awesome things with some of the plugins available, like math!
I have Launchy set to activate on a press of the Caps Lock key*, so it's always within my reach, no matter what program I have active. Clean and as simple as you want it to be.
*-don't fret, you can still get Caps for your Internet yelling needs with this setup, just hit Shift+Caps instead
[EDIT] Gotta add Volumouse. Got it set up to adjust my speaker volume by holding left-mouse and moving the scrollwheel up or down. Very handy, as I don't wanna remove my hand from the mouse to press hardware buttons, or go all the way down to my taskbar to adjust.
avast,
vlc media player
volumouse http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/volumouse.html
firefox with adblock+ tons of other addons.
might want to experiment with free gamebooster 3 to see if it improves your game frame rates. It does with my desktop comp. Worth about +10fps because I have so much junk running in the background normally thats not needed for gaming.
Make sure all your drivers are up to date.
CPUz and see if you can overclock in your bios?
ccleaner.
Control the volume with the mouse - programmable controls: I use right click+scroll.
Re-arrange your Windows taskbar buttons by draggin and dropping them, middle click to close them.
Both free, both GREAT!!! :)
IMHO AltDrag is better.
I still miss the ability to change the audio volume using the mouse wheel over the tray icon. Is there a program to do this? I couldn't find one.
