Were you thinking a lot in bed? What I usually do when this happens is I control my breathing to a deep and slow but steady rhythm. I imagined I'm laying on a field of grass and the wind is blowing slowly. Don't think about anything else and don't think too much about it.
I also use /r/writingprompts and Dimly to fall asleep. Reading makes me fall asleep because I start imagining the events happening in the story. Sometimes they're too good and I kept reading, though.
Finally, use the bed ONLY for sleeping.
Here is a solution to the screen brightness issue:

Also note that this has a Night light which is useful for XZ1 users, and the minimum brightness can be reduced even further in the app's settings.
There's probably something similar out there for speakers.
I use "dimly", the UI is much more user friendly and if the screen is too dark(eg. when you forget to turn it off and go outside), shaking your phone will set it to the brightest/maximum filter setting.

Must be missing some code for 6.0. 5.0 introduced a lot of new procedures, but they weren't strictly enforced until 6.0, and that app hasn't been updated since 2013, so I'm sure that's why. I verified it doesn't work on my N7/6.0 either.
Though I haven't used any of them in a while, I was using one called Dimly - Screen Dimmer that worked really well and I just tested it on my N7 and it does appear to function properly on 6.0. Just go into the settings for the app and adjust the min/max points for the app because by default it doesn't get too dark to avoid blacking out screens on devices with low backlight brightness settings. Also it doesn't have the flickering like you mentioned from the other screen filter app (I had tried that one in the past too).
Lux has too many permissions. I use Dimly.

Works damn well.
This Dimly app?
Looks like there is a shake phone option to restore screen brightness in it. Why not use that?
I have the Z2 force and use this app for night time:

I recall using it back when I still had my S4 and it is great, very simple to use.
Try Dimly.
Awww...this gave me such a smile. Thank you. :)
Edit: For agressive screen-dimming, Dimly (for Android) is amazing.

I used Dimly, it does what you want:

I find that this does a pretty good job of dimming lower than stock

I like the brightness. For night reading I sometimes use the Dimly app. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=es.richardsolano.filter
After trying numerous other apps on this category, I use Dimly and I really like it. I believe it will fix this bug as well.
