I don't know if it would be considered light weight but I've been using Feedly for years and takes up less than 50mb of storage on my phone. You can set it to open articles with default browser. Also another reason why I use it is if you sign in on a PC or other device it syncs saved articles etc..

> Doesn't Google news also push content to you, meaning more of curated news based on your past veiwing.
Yes. But It does this for "For You" section. It shows curated content in "For You" section.
Headlines section is different. It's not favouring any particular news source in "Headlines" section and It doesn't show curated news in this section. New google news also added "Full coverage" button. Where you can see all the articles from different news sources on the same topic. More information about new Google News.
Apart from that you can add your own topic/tag. For example, delhi. And it will also focus on news related to delhi. One thing that I don't like about google news is, even after clicking "Fewer stories like this" on celebrity news, sometimes It still shows news related to bollywood celebrities in "For You" section.
If you don't care about curated thing and you like to get news from your preferred sources. You should use rss feeder like Feedly. Add news sources and topics of your choice and It will show news from those sources.
I use the app feedly and subscribe to a wide variety of sources I have categorized.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devhd.feedly
Jacobin, Socialist Worker, In These Times, LibCom, World Socialists Web Site, The Intercept.
I also have a few other progressive-liberal sources too, and in other categories I have a slew of more mainstream news, and then finally a category for conservative news sites that aren't absolute shit. I find it's important to know what the other sides are saying.
That being said, I need to add some more sources to it.
I use Feedly on Android and in the browser.
I used to use Google Reader and when Google shut that down, Feedly copied their keyboard shortcuts (and I believe also their API, as I use a podcast app that used to synchronise with Google Reader and then moved to Feedly), making it very convenient to switch to it.
It's certainly not the most beautiful news reader in the world, but it's fast and efficient for me. I haven't seen it throw ads at me since I started using it in 2013, although it has started asking me if certain articles are about certain subjects in the last few months (optional answers, not obtrusive, looks like it's training some kind of AI for categorising the news).
Pro Tip: use an RSS reader app (I use Feedly) to create a Lions news feed.
That way you can read any clickbaity articles, like Carlos or some SideLion Report articles (to satisfy your curiosity) but it'll display the article in the RSS app itself and rob them of pageviews.
If you wanted to still support other journalists, whom you respect, then you can click on an article in your app's feed, tap the "open in browser" option, and read the article(s) on your browser (hence counting your clicks/pageviews) as well.
I usually read an article first, and if I find it useful/helpful, then I'll open it up in Chrome for a second and close it, just to give the author my pageview/clicks and show my support. Gotta support the good ones out there .
Telefona RSS reader yükle. Bütün haber sitelerinin RSS akışı var. Bunları programa ekleyerek haberleri bildirim olarak alabilirsin. Sol Haber Portalı RSS
it's a really awesome app to aggregate feeds: to follow the posts of websites that have feeds. It's free on Android
I'm using to be updated about news and productivity websites.

I use the feedly app on my android phone.
The Play store describes it as a 'news reader', but it's really for tracking and displaying RSS feeds. I use it to keep up with all of the webcomics and web serial novels that I follow.
Zasadniczo to używam feedly i subskrybuje wiele kanałów. Komentarzy polecam nie czytać wcale, a to co czytamy analizować według starej maksymy "kwestionuj wszystko".
I recommend Feedly. It has quite a few good Nintendo feeds. (Including one direct from Nintendo.com, though I sometimes prefer Nintendo Life.)
Feedly is my go-to app for following things I'm interested in. There is a paid version, but the free version works just fine for like 90% of people. Check it out.
You could also have a RSS feed reader like Feedly https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devhd.feedly). It;s free version let's you have only 3 feeds but they are enough for me to have my local newspapers, national newspapers and news from science.
Regarding which sites you would like to subscribe in your feed reader - I'd initially suggest you to browse different websites using the Mediabiasfactcheck addon for your desktop browser https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/appsextensions/ as it's providing some infos about differrent sites political bias. From there, you are obviuosly free to chose your side(s)
PS: I have recommended Feedly because it's the only one who has acces to my local newspapers from Romania
•Feedly •https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devhd.feedly •76.0.0 •I can't close the app using navigation gestures. When I swipe to go back, it keeps opening and closing left navigation bar.
If you want to take this to your mobile:
All your favourite feeds are now on your mobile.
My suggestion:
All your favourite feeds are now on your mobile.
Feedly Reader.
Best app for catching up with new articles on whatever topic you are interested in.
Helped me quit Facebook.
Feedly is een rss manager. De app is heel gebruiksvriendelijk en zonder notificaties maar met mooie widget. Voeg vervolgens zelf je nieuws sources toe via rss feeds.
You can subscribe using an RSS reader such as Feedly, and then use Feed Notifier to get push notifications.
You can try some RSS feed apps for your phone, such as feedly. Then you just add the rss feed link of a certain news source and you get all their news on that app.
I don't know about notifications though, I don't use my phone for news.
I apologize, rereading the previous comment did come off as snarky. :(
In all earnest though, I was under the impression that the question in mind was more along the same idea that other people had. (CGP leaving YouTube and only uploading to iTunes and RSS, which isn't true.) I see what you mean though and offer the following information:
While YouTube is still the best option for most people, the RSS feed is the second best option for Android users. RSS is a type of web format which will display published information in real time to a user. When that "feed" is put into a RSS Reader, you'll have a program that can display and alert you when new content is released! So with CGPGrey's videos, a RSS feeder that's setup to listen for new releases will be able to show/display the video as well. (assuming other things of course like, what format the videos are in and if a user can steam them.)
While there's a ton of RSS feeders on android, the one that a friend of mine would suggest to look into is Feedly. Just copy the RSS link and import it into the app to start!
A custom Feedly is really all you need to be honest.. Fill it up with Sites and RSS that you enjoy and never look back.. create sections and work on it, tweak it. If you dont like that Opera News is a viable alternative if you dont want to self curate your end feed and HD Widgets is a fantastic alternative to google weather.
If you decide to go Feedly use the website first to set up your website and RSS feeds and sections it will really help speed up the process.
> a new feed reader for news,
I use Feedly for my news/RSS feeds, mostly because it also has a web interface for when I'm on my computer. I don't have much experience with any others, unfortunately, but there are plenty out there.
>a new Reddit client,
I personally recommend Sync for Reddit, but I have been hearing a lot of things about Joey for Reddit as well. Of course, there is always the Official Reddit App if you want to give that a shot.
>something to replace FaceTime,
Google Duo is absolutely the way to go here. There are of course other apps that include video calling, but Duo is stupidly easy to use.
>and then just any cool Android apps that iOS would never allow
I have little experience directly using iOS, but there are a few apps I know of that have no iOS counterpart. Tasker lets you program your phone to carry out tasks you specify when certain conditions are met. A simple example would be when your phone connects to your car's bluetooth, your podcast player automatically opens and the volume is set to max. Or when connected to your school or work's WiFi signal, turn on silent mode.
On Android, you can customize about everything. You are not stuck to the default apps. So try out a different launcher/home screen app like Nova Launcher, which is highly praised for its customizability.
Also, check out this other comment I made over on r/GalaxyS9 about some differences to look out for between iOS and Android.
Brukte Feedly mye før, den var knall bra den gangen. Kanskje den er bra enda.

Feedly? Hope that's something along the same lines.
Have you tried Feedly?
I think Feedly is what your grandpa really wants. Not a Twitter client, but a feed reader. You just need to add the webpages (for example euronews.com) he wants follow like on Twitter, and then the app automatically aggregates the news from the specified sources.

Which one? Do you mean this app? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devhd.feedly&hl=en
Been pretty happy with Feedly
I'm so fine with the regular Feedly app, I stopped looking for alternatives.
Reader as in for your application or reader for reading websites?
If you want a Reader for daily use, Feedly for Android is great.
My most used apps (ignoring all social media apps b/c there you pick what you like) are:
I've got and use tons of others - I'm an apps person but the above are the ones I'd consider must have. That several weren't available on Windows Phone forced me to switch to Android 2 years ago (after I dumped iOS for Windows Phone).
Can I recommend you guys, Feedly. It is an awesome RSS reader that does perfectly the job. I've been using it since it came out on Play Store when Google stopped Google Reader.
