Finally people realize that gesture based navigation is the best. There are apps like this since years.
Disabling navbar and only using gestures is so amazing, got all the screen space and no buttons..
Using this setup since the Nexus 4 with GMD Gesture Control, where you can actually create your own gestures for pretty much EVERYTHING your phone could do. Even multitouch gestures.
It is a root app indeed, but it's much more powerful than edge gestures is.
i done been had gestures.
tap fingerprint sensor index - toggle notifications from any screen, second tap expands quick settings, third tap collapses everything.
tap fingerprint sensor middle finger - quick launch camera (double press power is inconsistent for me + i don't like to use power button if avoidable since they're a common hardware fault over time)
long press home - launch google search
long press recents - switch to last app. prefer it over double tap since i've had long press = switch last app committed to muscle memory after using it that way for years.
long press back button - toggle low power mode profile in automation app macrodroid (data off, battery saver mode on, account sync off, location off) i use this if i know i'm not using my phone for a while like before bed, arriving at work, meeting someone for dinner, etc...
on home screen - swipe up for app drawer, swipe down for notifications, double tap to sleep.
status bar - slide left/right to adjust brightness, double tap to sleep.
lockscreen - swipe up on screen off to wake device, double tap lockscreen to sleep.
most of these are done using the xposed module gravity box. most can be replicated with GMD gesture control. i use GMD on my tablet running 7.0 for triple tap anywhere to sleep and to map long press nav buttons to the same functions listed above.
There are many more possibilities with onscreen buttons than with hardware buttons. They are customizable and switchable between apps. You probably noticed that sometimes another fourth or even fifth button appears. That wouldn't be possible with hardware buttons.
But hey, I fully understand you. I'm using GMD Gesture Control to do the button commands and disabled the navbar completely. I'm doing it like this since probably 5 years or so (Since the Nexus 4 as far as I can remember).
There are other apps that do similar stuff, but I find GMD the best one. It gives pure freedom over your gestures and what they do.
The phone looks even better without any buttons at all. I love it.
If you have Root there is an amazing App I have used for years now called GMD Gesture Control. You can basically asign any gesture that you can execute anywhere and an action that happens after that. For example if I swipe with 3 fingers to the right I can change the rotation and it's not locked anymore. You can pretty much execute anything like changing music tracks with a swipe or a pattern that you can draw inside of the App. It's well worth the money imo.

I used it a lot, but was annoyed that they just work from home screen and not everywhere, so I use "GMD GestureControl" which allows to used a lot more actions and also Nova actions almost anywhere. There is a root and a non-root version of the app, I have a rooted device and also the rooted version :D
With Nova I still just do:
I completely hide the soft buttons since I hate to lose precious screen. so l I have the following setup:
Another alternative for root users: Install GMD Gesture Control, make a new swipe up gesture with the starting zone in the bottom centre and set the Google app as the action. The setup looks like this.
The shortcut then works from any screen, just like how it used to work, and a long press on the home button still brings up Now On Tap.
GMD Gesture Control is great, but I don't think it can do all of the gestures you mentioned. Gestures can be programmed to launch Tasker tasks.
If you have root you should check out GMD gesture control. I used to use this on my rooted phones and it's really responsive and customizable.
GMD Gesture Control is the best you can get with root. There is a lite version available, but IMO it is well worth the money.
If you have Root I highly recommend this App:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.goodmooddroid.gesturecontrol
You can assign pretty much any gesture which then triggers something like turning off the screen. You can activate those gestures inside any App and even create blacklists if you want gestures being disabled while using a specific App.
I've been using it for years and it's very reliable.
If you are open to rooting, i've used this app for the last 3 years or so.

I do a diagonal gestures(as to not mess w/ an apps built in side swipes) from the edge for back/recents.
GMD Gesture Control https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.goodmooddroid.gesturecontrol&hl=de
IMO the best Gesture App for Android. You can do all the things you mentioned above and many many more things.
So this is not Tasker, but I use GMD Gesture Control to do different gestures on screen to do basically any action, including executing Tasker tasks (it does require root, though). But I share it with you because one of the things it can do is modify the "edge" of your screen in pixels. I see no reason why you couldn't just use this to accomplish what you want.
I didn't really get what you were trying to explain, but I can explain what I did.
With GravityBox you have the option to turn navbar completely off.
With the app GMD GestureControl you can assign almost any gesture to actions. In my case I use the
I set much more gestures and really love using them instead of soft- or hard buttons. If you'r interested I can post my whole setup with all gestures :)
I should clarify. With the Gesture Anywhere feature, there's an option to pull up the dim over lay from any border on your screen and minimize/maximize the length, position, and thickness of the activation space (by dragging your finger across it). So it's absolutely unintrusive and won't mess you up during a video or gaming but it's still totally usable. This is what I'm talking about (screen shot from my old S3: http://imgur.com/cFz7Jfc)
I just wish this was available in app form on the Play Store.
The closes I've seen to something like this is GMD Gesture Control. It's hella expensive but far more customizable. There's a free version but it lacks custom gestures which all my gestures are :(
Awesome list! How are you handling LG double tap - screen off? I use Apex launcher and it doesn't have a default setting to turn screen off, and for a while used a Tasker + Secure settings, then found an app that would do just that and now absolutely in love with GMD Gestures
I'm using GMD Gesture Control since the Nexus 4. Never even thought of using the navbar since then, it was always disabled for me
I asked a few months back and got this as the only reply. Never tried it out personally.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.goodmooddroid.gesturecontrol&hl=en_AU
Only if I use it with GMD Gestures. Else, no chance of course.
If that app wouldn't exist I'd be still searching for a below 5.5" phone
There is also GMD Gesture Control for root users or Edge Gestures without root.
GMD is by far better, and I actually disabled the navbar since years (Using this since the Nexus 4) now. But if you don't want to root, Edge Gestures does the job.
Primarily for GMD Gesture Controls. I swipe up from the bottom of the navbar for screen off, swipe left to emulate the back button, and swipe right to go forward a page in Chrome. I tried non-root solutions for screen off, but they wouldn't truly lock the phone due to limitations I'm not well versed with. Been using this and Nova Launcher since my Note 2 days.
GMD Gesture Control is paid, requires root and optionally build.prop edit to remove navbar, but you will get infinite customizable gestures for lots of device actions, including launching apps.
Or if you can't have any of that, try AIOG at least.
GMD Gesture Control if you're rooted. Can do pretty much everything with your own defined gestures. Everywhere, not just the homescreen.
Dunno, but I'm using my Pixel XL mostly in one hand, with one thumb... Just setup some gestures with GMD and you're good to go.
Only thing I use with both hands is typing. So I'm more accurate and faster
I used to use GMD GestureControl ★ root in the past, it was working like a charm. I set sliding horizontally over navbar to navigate through apps. I don't know if it's ready to support Oreo, but you can give it a try with a Lite version.

if you want to, you can already do this if you want with something like GMD gesture controls.
i used to have gesture navigation back when i had a nexus 7 in my car's dash for a head unit, made it easy to use the tablet without looking away from the road.
As most things iOS are.
I actually tried to get used to this multitask alternative, but force touching the left edge with your right thumb is just.. Really difficult to get used to. Especially if you have a 6s+ / 7+.
I definitely like the GMD Gestures on my Pixel more than that.
Thank you very much for the detailed answer :)
Thank you so much for your help, I just don't know who to ask and really appreciate your help :)
I achieved something similar to this by using GMD Gesture Control, and setting up dummy full-edge gesture that don't really do anything. If you enable "Consume Touch Events" than these edges eat all contact/touches, achieving what you'd like, but you do need to be rooted.
There are other non-root alternatives that could achieve a similar effect though, you may want to try any sort of edge/gesture control apps and just set the gesture area to the left/right sides of the screen.
If you're rooted you can use apps like GMD GestureControl, which allows you to do all kind of crazy gestures on your screen or also borders to perform action, i.e. Nova actions like the app drawer :)
I would like built-in pie mode, even though I'm currently using GMD on sides (right to go back, bottom to enter recents, bottom 2 fingers to go home).
apps like all in one gestures or GMD gesture control can apply system wide gestures from any screen.
If you're rooted there's an Xposed module that does exactly what you're looking for. I don't know of any unrooted solutions though.
Also if you like gesture control try out GMD Gesture Control (also root), it's the most responsive and easy to use gesture app I've come across.
GMD Guesture Control can do pretty much any guesture you program and can be linked to tasks, shortcuts, etc. Requires root. I use the hell out of it.
I really adore Start!? because of the ability to put links, scripts and whole file directories in the bar. That last one is just so handy. I have it set to a GMD gesture.
I use this app for gestures. You can set the gestures to do Tasker tasks and also, in the advanced settings for each gesture you can set it to work over the lockscreen and the keyboard too. Well worth the cost in my opinion.
> It's a preference
It is, this is the setup i use on my One+:
capacitive buttons, backlight is off
GMD GestureControl (btw there is a working beta version for 5.0, go to G+ and became a beta tester), i have a gesture for 'Back button'
Hidden benefit of this setup: "no one else can use my phone", since there are no software buttons, and you barely can see the hardware buttons without backlight.
GMD Gesture Control for infinite gestures that can use every action on your phone.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts :D
I also switched from iPhone (in my Case 6+) to the Nexus 6P and I'm really happy with it :) I agree with all you positive points :D
> Miss "Control Center" from iOS.
TBH I like the Android control center more and it's both together and not 2 individual things (CC and NC). If you are rooted you can also change the layout, number of buttons and also place apps there. I'm very used to have calculator and other apps there, so I placed them there on Android, too :P
> I hate how colorful the current version of Android is.
That's a preference thing, but you can easily change the whole design of the icons. The rest isn't colorful, it's just dark teal-colored and white. Also if you are rooted you can also change that and make it completely black (save battery and looks cool), make it transparent to see you wallpaper through settings and other apps or change it too many other colors and styles.
> Can't take screenshots with the official Nexus 6P case.
You can also take screenshots with Now On Tap, just invoke it and press the share button, it's faster and easier. But remember it will make the statusbar blank and hide the nav bar to declutter screenshots, which is a nice feature, too. Else also here, if you're rooted you can set almost any gesture to take screenshots, other apps like GMD GestureControl you can take screenshots, too.
> Google's camera app sucks. Still takes great photos.
I agree, but somehow it's good too. You don't have to fiddle around, just start and shoot. The essential stuff is in it. If you need further feature like manuell setup or live filter just search for app which you need.
> No OIS is VERY noticeable.
I really only mention it while taking videos. Pictures are always (almost 99% of the time) really nice and without blur, noise, shakiness, defocused etc. xP
> Snapchat / FB and other popular apps are inferior to iOS version.
Since I don't use them I don't know. But as long as they work good everything is ok. I also read a lot about very good third party apps which are faster, easier to use and less energy consuming for social media apps. Every other app I use is on Android as good as on iOS (except Microsoft Office app, especially OneNote).
GMD Gesture Control. Obvious reasons. I don't even have the navbar enabled anymore.
this, and these:
...are my essential app apps.
Back to GMD, I'm using it since my SGS2. Back then, i hated that the back button was "too far away". That was a 4,3" device, on the OPO 5,5" even worse :D
On my tablet, i have like 5 back gestures, 4 top corner + same as on my phone (D-L).
Also it supports browser gestures, so i can replicate the same gestures on my phone / tablet that i use on my desktop, which is sick.
Why not just use the right edge for back and left edge for drawer. That's what I do with GMD.
GMD Gestures - you get to customize YOUR OWN gesture navigation. I've had gesture navigation ever since my Galaxy S3
Adaway - Systemwide adblock, everywhere
Xposed - Just tons of things you can do with this like Pie Controls in Chrome, Instagram privacy and downloads, etc.
Titanium Backup - Only real solution to backing up your apps including the actual settings and data within the app
This person has managed to solve the issue by using a shortcut to a GMD GestureControl action:

>Swipe down gesture->shortcuts->GMD gesture control->Navigation->Notification Panel

It worked for me too, using GravityBox module for Xposed framework.

The only issue is that the notification panel seems to expand instantly, without any animation, but it's better than expanding slooowly, amirite?
The thing is - for years now - i'm using this combo:
GMD Gesture control & LMT Launcher & App Dialer
GMD: i have multiple gestures, but mainly i have a gesture for 'Back', i'm using this since Galaxy S2.
LMT: I use the Pie launcher at the bottom of the screen
App Dialer: Since it's a popup, you can access with from anywhere, start anything pretty much instantly This app is really good. Think about it. You want to start an app that's not on your homescreen? What you gonna do?
Press the home button
Get to the app drawer
Look or search for the app
Start the app.
This is slow and pointless as fuck.
If i could get these without root, i would never root my phone ever again.
GMD gestures . I can't imagine using a navigation bar ever again.
And if the phone is rooted, nothing easier than replicate gesture with that app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.goodmooddroid.gesturecontrol
If you are rooted then there is no better App for gestures than this imho:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.goodmooddroid.gesturecontrol
you can use GMD Gesture Control to replace the Navbar with gestures ;)
Fucking GMD Gesture Control.
I use GMD gesture control to use gestures everywhere, not just on the home screen. But I also use Nova gestures ;P
At first it looks overwhelming and way too much to remember, but they're all intuitive (for me), and it's just natural for me to use them. Give it a try :D
Feel free to ask :)
One Hand Use Navigation
Both hand use Navigation
Other Gestures
Or you can use gestures: GMD gesture control I'm using it since SGS2 because i hated that i cannot reach back button easily (yes are you allowed to laugh, it was only 4,3" screen). So since then, i'm using the down-left gesture for back. The only downside of this method, is that you have to blacklist this gestures from few apps, like Maps (accidentally drawing the back gesture while you are pan around)
http://i.imgur.com/oO6D2Mo.jpg -> before you ask it, it's called Screener
Also this screenshot is a good representation of how my phone looks like, since i'm using the hardware keys without backlight.
But i also use the pie control, swipe up from the bottom (LMT launcher)
Buttons:
Last app: pretty useful if you have to switch between apps, exp.: i need to translate something -> Translate when swich back to the last used app.
AppDialer: LINK I can launch pretty much anything from anywhere.
Google translate
I have that gesture and many, many more with GMD GestureControl.
I don't want to be rude... but I really can't stand soft buttons and think it really looks ugly to have them on the screen. One of the reasons I switched from the Nexus 6P to the Note 7 was exactly this; I didn't want to have soft buttons on my screen. Everything looks much better without them. I eben used GravityBox to completely turn them off and used GMD Gesture Control to navigate with gestures on the screen :D (works incredibly well and without any issues!)
> it might work. I guess?
Try it, maybe it looks cool :)
If you have some questions or need help feel free to ask :3
PS: haha maybe I get more attention with the "Ultimate Solution" banner xD
