You could install Home Button Launcher, and replace current app (most likely Enhanced Google services) assigned in Settings > Apps & notifications > Advanced > Default apps > Assist & voice input to that app. You'll then be able to assign any app to be launched by long-pressing the Home button.
That's the point I"m currently at and am trying to get away from it. I have a Nova Launcher gesture where I can launch Voice Search, but didn't want to have something I couldn't customize.
JACKPOT! As I was typing this message I got sidetracked and did another search. This one was great and I found a solution! <strong>Home Button Launcher</strong> was recommended by this blog that came up on my search and it does just what I need!
You can have a multitude of apps if you prefer, or if you have only one app, you can set it to auto launch in the settings.
If I can give some advice, don't use gestures and set one of the double click/long press on a button for the dropdown notifications. Using a navbar raises the keyboard too. Also, use a launcher with the search bar in the dock, it is very useful (I'm using Action Launcher and the bottom search bar is fantastic). Chrome should receive an update with Duplex to have 3 buttons on the bottom of the screen. If you don't use any assistant, try Home Button Launcher and set the app you use the most in that menu so those apps can be opened in any moment and are easily reachable with your thumb. Hope these advices can help :)
To do it through gravitybox you do.
At least for setting up the longpress on the home key, you can do that without root though, using Home Button Launcher and some app that simply turns off the screen, such as Turn Off Screen
You basically set up home button launcher so that it only has one app on it, that app being the one to turn off the screen :)
Actually you can do this with the Home Button Launcher App. You can set it up to launch a single app when you swipe up, or to show you an overlay with a list of apps. I just have it launch my music player :)
I use an app called "home button launcher". Hasn't been updated since 2020, but it still works fine on A12. It will launch a window with a set of shortcuts. Interface is a bit lacking, but it works fine.

This app may do what you need it to after just a bit of tinkering with the configuration/shortcut(s).
Hope it helps..!
Home Button Launcher can launch apps or shortcuts. And can be set as default assistant app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dynamicg.homebuttonlauncher
Unfortunately no folders, no search.
If you disable the Google app, it disables google voice assistant. Which I've done for several years, including my G3, my V20 and now my V60.
Whether you do the above or not: Under Application Manager - Default Apps - Assist & Voice Input you can change or turn off you assist app. If you change this setting it turns off the Google Assistant button, not allowing you to use it for any other software. Personally, ever since my G3 I started using Home Button Launcher (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dynamicg.homebuttonlauncher). It's not super fancy, but gets the job done, and let's you use the Google Assistant function for something else. I'm sure other apps do the same, though.
And, finally, I found a workaround to be able to re-enable the Google Assistant button after doing the above. It's called Button Mapper (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=flar2.homebutton). You have to pay for the pro version ($6-$7), but it allows several different options to remap the GA button, along with all your other buttons.
I strongly recommend "Home Button Launcher" : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dynamicg.homebuttonlauncher
I ususally start this app by gesture. Not necessary start by home button.
Using Home Launcher you can make your home-button-long-press (or whatever) bring up the normal Google search app instead of Assistant.
Follow these steps and long press of the home button launches your camera.
qslide is nice, the only downfall is that you can't customize it with other apps you would want.
Personally I use Home Button Launcher and I can't recommend it enough. It replaces my Google Assistant shortcut (hold/drag home button depending on your Android version) and I can set just about any apps I want there for easy access.
Home Launcher can't add to the app drawer, but it sort of acts as a custom drawer for app activities. It's one extra tap, but it works.
I didn't do anything. I have been keeping up with this whole thing though. Personally, I don't see any difference between the home button press and OK google. If you want the ability to get the voice search function by holding the home key, download HomeLauncher(https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dynamicg.homebuttonlauncher), and set Voice Search as your home button command. You can go to settings and tell it to default to Voice Search if there are no other programs.
Pair it with this app to launch it with a long press on the home button (swipe up on home button if on Lollipop).
i use google now...now...but before i used to use home button launcher. you dont even have to root
It allows you to change the home swipe up to anything you want including nothing.
You'd need an app that binds to home button and launches other apps. Found this in the play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dynamicg.homebuttonlauncher Looks like it could do the trick.
Apps:
Clover: 4chan viewer.
Home Launcher: Basically a launcher for app shortcuts/activities. The interface leaves much to be desired but it works. Meant to be used with other apps like Pie Control or set to your home button.
Money Lover: Finance manager.
PokeInfo: Pokedex app.
Slide: I've tried a bunch of Reddit apps, but Slide feels the best for me.
Games:
Open Flood: Simple yet challenging color puzzle game.
Serve Up!: Very cute game. Click ingredients in the right order to make food animals.
Sudoku: Nice sudoku app.
The End of the World: Very short but beautiful game about a man dealing with depression.
Icons:
Adastra: Flat rounded icon pack.
CandyCons: Beautiful material design icons.
Clix: Nice and clean.
Revolution: Circle icons.
Xposed:
Clean Lockscreen: Remove elements from your lockscreen (clock, status bar icons, letters on keypad, etc)
No Lockscreen Wallpaper: Disable the music spectrum on the lockscreen.
List made using List My Apps
Other app recs: 1, 2 | Google Sheets version
Edit: I forgot to add since it's not an app, but I thought people here might appreciate it—Product Chart has a really nice smartphone comparison chart that lets you filter by price, storage, RAM, screen size, and a bunch more stuff. They also have one for laptops and tablets. Hope it can help those looking to buy new gadgets. :)
Home Button Launcher.

Download (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dynamicg.homebuttonlauncher&hl=en) and then set it to open the google search app
Try Home Button Launcher, it matches your needs: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dynamicg.homebuttonlauncher
You can start it not only by home button, just launch the app itself.
Please excuse, the exact name is "Home Button Launcher". But you can use the app without home button, too.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dynamicg.homebuttonlauncher
You could replace Google assistant with a home button Launcher which will make opening apps easier https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dynamicg.homebuttonlauncher
If you can't figure it out, I think Home Button Launcher could provide an alternative solution.
I have used this before to do so: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dynamicg.homebuttonlauncher
Try this app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dynamicg.homebuttonlauncher
You have to set it as your assist app though.
You don't need to root!

Ah so its kind of like home button launcher.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dynamicg.homebuttonlauncher
I will check it out!
I never use Google Assistant either. I installed Home Button Launcher and set it up to launch the normal Google Search app. It works perfectly, the only problem is that every so often (maybe 3 times a month or so) the "assist app" selection gets reset to Google Assistant and I have to go in there and set it back to what it needs to be.
