Try this, no root required: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ace.jun.simplecontrol
Or this if you want something different but more efficient, also no root: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jun.ace.piecontrol
Yea, that really bothers me too. I think there's a no root method of switching the behavior of the capacitive nav buttons?
This app works without root as well but it's probably not as good of a solution as with root. I'm hoping there's a root method developed that doesn't trip knox.
You don't seem to look very hard. Here's the one I use very nice no bells and whistles just the three nav buttons https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ace.jun.simplecontrol
It expands the screen size and makes the phone look bigger I enjoy not having the on screen buttons and so do many other people so you don't necessarily need to be so pretentious about it.
This might help you. It will add soft keys, but as an overlay. So, if you have things at the bottom of your screen it will cover them. I think you can hide it, though. If you have root there are other ways you can add soft keys.

Got it. J-touch & other apps that I suggested will solve your problem. It might take some time to get used to those gestures. Once you get used to it, You will like it.
If you need proper feel of navigation bar, simple navigation bar is also good.
J-touch is free, No ads. It doesn't have internet access. So you can trust this app. While simple navigation bar & some other apps have ads. Because of that It can use more battery. You can buy pro version though.
Afaik, it tends to be either/or. I have by no means had a chance to use everything out there, but I've yet to run across one that had both.
However, there are ways to get on screen buttons. It's been ages since I did it, so memory is failing me. I'm not even certain if it requires root or not.
But, there are also apps that can duplicate them like this one.
I can confirm that apps like that one work just fine with a mouse for me (two lg and two samsung devices at least, haven't tried it on my phone or my nook).
Also, there's an accessibility section in settings that may help out in setting him up as you figure things out.
Edit: the accessibility setting basically keeps a single icon on screen that lets you control things better
If your power button is working then you can unlock it using mouse, you can type , scroll. Just like this!! https://streamable.com/x0onn
By the way which phone are you using ? Most of the newer phones support OTG functionality , OTG adapter is very cheap , but search on google if your phone supports OTG functionality.
Edit : for my device ,If screen is off & I connect mouse using OTG , it turns on the screen. So, even if power button is not working , screen will light up. If your physical butyons ( home , back buttons) are not working , then you can install Simple Control. Then just backup your data.
the only way to do it is to hide the nav bar permanently (which is basically the Immersive Mode that can be achieved with an app too but you'd want the adb path to minimize impact on the performance) with an adb command and use something like this to draw an overlay:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ace.jun.simplecontrol
however, you'll be relying on Accessibility services so some performance degradation is expected.
Thank you for answering! I guess Pie Controls arent implemented, since Immersive Mode is there :) But there are apps which can bring you pie controls. I dont know if there would be conflicts with Immersive Mode. Like this.
It may be that the screen/digitizer is failing. The only solution is to have it replaced. I can't pull down from the status bar anymore and I can see the screen has actually become unglued at the corners. I attribute it to age and heat.
To get your phone temporarily usable, you can install an app like Simple Control to give you an alternate nav bar. You can also install xposed and use the Dimensions Editor module to increase the height of your navbar to where the screen registers touch.
Edit: made something real quick using some random app. If you search around and put in a few minutes you can probably craft yourself something that works for you.
Go to the app store and type in phone buttons. Some of the apps allow you to move the home, menu, and back button where ever you want on your screen like on the right upper or middle side if you like.
Here is one I think may work for you: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ace.jun.simplecontrol
Again I can't personally recommend it, but the photos look like what you need.
on screen buttons don't work (at least on 6.0, the little build.prop hack to enable them is broken because Samsung like completely disabled them. ) you'll need to use a third party fake button app for that. I recommend simple control Better yet, I don't think it requires root.
And if you ever need to sync files, you have still Bluetooth and wifi fileshare, and Google drive.
The same thing happened on my Nexus 4. From what I understand it is some combination of a hardware and software bug. I installed this app (Simple Control) as a way to bring back the buttons and it works well enough to get the job done. Basically it creates a new floating navigation bar on your screen. I still have my Nexus 4 as a dedicated mp3 player now, still using this app. Hope this helps.
Once I had a phone that had a "dead zone" on the bottom of the screen, so I started using this app called Simple Control, it's not perfect, but it did get the job done.
You can try Simple Control https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ace.jun.simplecontrol I've been using it for a month because I try not to frequently use my home button to prevent scratch and damage. It is a great app. You need to play around to set it the way u like it.
This app will probably help you out.
You can have it pie-shaped using this other app from the same developer.
Here is the app you need https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ace.jun.simplecontrol
Then figure out what to do about your broken buttons. BTW inside the phone the buttons and lights are connected with a tiny cable and yours came loose. I think its probably super hard to get to on this phone though. In the past with fatter phones i could fix this in 5 mins
You can use apps like, these apps works without root. You can get those 3 buttons by swiping from screen edge. (You can decide the placement)

You can sideload an app like Simple Control to add on-screen navigation buttons, including the ability to enter split-screen mode. You can also use Taskbar to enable freeform window mode.
Note that you'll need a mouse connected to your Shield to use those options. Sideloading Button Remapper might work to remap a button on the controller to enter split-screen, but I haven't tried that.
Tested on my Nexus 5x, this seems to work well. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ace.jun.simplecontrol

This one is about the closest you can get without root. It works pretty well I say https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ace.jun.simplecontrol

This is my most used app which I use for my back, home, recents. It hides to the right side (or left and bottom or all) and has a floating app that I don't use) of my phone because I'm right handed and I never use my hardware buttons on the bottom. I hate reaching for them, plus I have an S5 active with actual buttons and don't want to wear them out. Besides all the nonsense I just went into. It has long press options you can use to screen shot as well as other long press options.

I use this app on the left side of my phone and have a screen floating recording/screen shot app I can get to also if I want to screen record.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.duapps.recorder
You can use this. It's what I used on my old Samsung phone before I rooted it.
