We've had the aurora over WNY a handful of times, but often cloud cover + light pollution makes it hard to see. There was a geomagnetic storm over the past few days which was supposed to directly hit us, so your chances are higher over the next couple of days. Looks like cloud cover tonight might make it more challenging, though.
Maybe try Ft. Niagara area/Lake Ontario/Niagara county if you really are trying to see it. This dark sky map is usually pretty accurate
You can get a Total Dissolved Solids tester for about 15 bucks. Most of my readings around the area, but not Lockport specifically, have come up around 140-160ppm, which I'd classify as 'moderate'.
There is an awesome flea market called Super Flea in Cheektowaga. But its only open Saturday and Sunday, 9am-5pm. Its also a farmers market.
I tried looking on inaturalist app and there are few observations of it around here. I am planning on buying one off Amazon for $18.

Maybe ask urban roots because they sell some native plants.
I was literally looking at buying pawpaw tree(s) and spicebush off Amazon (mostly for Butterflies), when I saw a notification for this post. Weird coincidence.
that's it! Here's a matching Street View.
I gotta pick some more difficult shots!
im a web developer/general developer here in buffalo. there are definitely jobs for the things you are mentioning in the area. Del North has been hiring a lot lately, i got a GREAT job offer there i had to decline but a friend of mine got a really good job in their IT staff with entry level experience:
just throwing that out there.
the one south of Hertel on Elmwood is like a warehouse, Video Liquidators? Then there's a shop right at Hertel and Elmwood. And the American News Company on Niagara headed into Black Rock
also, there's this
If you Google "how VPNs work" there are a bunch of sites that will explain about it. I use a really easy and simple one called TunnelBear. Great Android app too and you don't need to know how to set anything up or configure anything.
Basically, if you are on a WiFi network with someone else, they can access data you're sending, including usernames and passwords, pretty easily. If you use a VPN, then even if they are able to, it will be completely useless to them since it will be encrypted and show up as gibberish.
Most people don't know what a VPN is or that public WiFi is dangerous, but that's a concern everywhere, including Starbucks or hotel WiFi, so this isn't anything new or unique to what Buffalo is doing, and it can be very easily fixed by simply downloading a good VPN client.
The company is located here in Buffalo, the website is www.mycustomstay.com (it's not complete, probably why I didn't post it to start). It is one site under development by 36in36, which has five other sites that will be released this year.
I own a small building in Allentown with six Airbnb units. So we will be the first users of the website, but our bigger goal is to provide a template that hosts in other cities can follow.

For #1, check out meetup.com. I'm one of the organizers for one of the gaming groups (there are several!) and there are a lot of Magic and DnD groups around. I primarily play board games, however some of the places I go have pretty regular Magic groups.
Here's a few places I know of, in order of what I am most familiar with.

You should try posting this on Buffalo Open Coffee Club as well. Lots of people there with kiddos.

Also a suggestion: If you had a survey that might be easier. I'd even fill it out for free! (But my son is 1)
Maybe Cattaraugus Creek near Springville...Scoby Dam area?
https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/new-york/scoby-dam-trail
It seems kinda short though...and idk if you can walk in the river.
Also check out Sprague Brook in Concord (Between Colden and Springville). TONS of smaller creeks you can walk in and explore last time I was there, although they may dry up in the summer.

WRT Iranian food, my sister got me Food of Life by Najmieh Batmanglij a while back. I've not yet perfected my Tahdig, but I've gotten decent. I'd definitely recommend learning to cook if you have a kitchen.
Check out Premier Gourmet on Maple. They have a giant rack of all kinds of different hot sauces. Great selection! I had a collection of about 30 at one point a few years ago. Certain sauces are better than others on different foods. If you're dead-set on a local brand, check out Burning Asphalt. Premier sold their stuff last time I checked (and I think Dash's did too) and it's pretty solid.
But if you don't care where it came from, check out Secret Aardvark's "Aardvark" habanero sauce. No idea if Premier has that or not. I discovered it at a little diner in Seattle a month or so ago, and liked it so much that I came home and ordered a bottle on Amazon. Great flavor, and a nice little kick (but not so much that it's obnoxious and ruins your food). https://www.amazon.com/Secret-Aardvark-Habanero-Sauce/dp/B00AIR3Q38/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1476750188&sr=8-1&keywords=secret+aardvark

Stay safe.
meetup.com, that's where all us introverts arrange to meetup and do things together. I'm an introvert who started using it last year, and loved it. Now I help organize some meetup events (usually escape rooms, board game nights, or puzzles & cocktail events), and maintain one of the groups.
In particular I'd recommend book clubs, WNY Fun & Friendship groups (there's one just for women if you don't want to deal with guys at the time), and of course my favorite the Greater Buffalo Boardgames Meetup Group :)
It's the Fairmont Creamery, owned by Carl Paladino.
In chrome or any browser that you can install Ad Block Plus, do the following:
Here's one a few guys I know do:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/137133486354783/
And then FC Buffalo is getting a beginner/intermediate pickup group going....not sure how good you are:
ShareX is my favorite. The best part for me is that once you screenshot something, you can right click on the file in the application and click upload. It will automatically upload it to imgur and you can right click on it again to get the url and paste it. Makes getting screenshots for reddit so much easier. You can also do video or gif screenshots, as well as a bunch of other stuff.
Can't imagine the humidity being worse than Houston's though
Welcome!
Here is a great shopping guide put together by Visit Buffalo Niagara. It not only includes the area malls, but also several great neighborhoods and villages for boutique shopping.
Here are some things you and your dad might be interested in:
Are you guys into anything in particular? History, Art, Theater, Literature, Architecture, Music?
Yeah I was going to say, this is everyone everywhere now, especially if something is free then you're the product.
Also, if you're worried about this then you should look into something like NordVPN, it blocks Spectrum or Verizon etc from knowing what you're doing on the internets.
My parents loved them I grew up going to their shows haha. Found this https://www.amazon.com/Armed-Legged-Jackdaw/dp/B00005YDP9/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Jackdaw&qid=1627297419&s=music&sr=1-1
I have a friend with one of those air couches you just inflate by grabbing wind with it thats awesome at the beach for reading and keeping you above the sand
The one in the center of the screen. There was some other really cool graffiti in there as well. Have you ever stumbled across anything really exciting or unique while exploring?
Yup, that's the 1887 Buffalo Public Library, there's a bit more here: http://wnyheritagepress.org/photos_week_2006/central_library/central_library.htm and I think this book: https://archive.org/details/buffalolibrarya00nygoog

> But pointing out everything negative in the region, while ignoring the positives is being a negative nancy.
I agree with this mindset but not on this particular project.
This project was supposed to be 6 bays for 6 different companies. NYS went all in with SolarCity and sold the idea..hard. I think it's fair to be hypercritical now after this. Or as I said before doubt until proven wrong. I think everyone wants to be proven wrong.
Speaking of the 6 bays - Soraa, the other company, was squeezed out and decided to build in Syracuse instead. One has to wonder what the current public perception would be if when talking about SolarCity issues it would be framed in a conversation of '1 of 6' at Riverbend and Soraa moving forward full steam ahead.
Also, not sure if you have read but Tesla recently had some wage issues with their plant. Musk is attached to both.
I am a huge fan of Elon Musk but it has not been a good couple of weeks for either of these companies and there is a lot of money at stake here.
I do enjoy Charlotte. I also enjoy Buffalo.
psssssshh, then why would they even consider painting the water tower a Hamburger!?!
A lot has changed the last 5-10 years. I think the glass blowing is this guy, says he has a new location.
I really haven't explored in the summer just the FoL but it seems they added a lot and it's much more developed (hotels, chain restaurants etc)
First of all, check out this shopping guide put together by visit Buffalo-Niagara. It covers all of the hot neighborhoods, villages and area shopping malls.
Second, what are you looking for?
The Galleria has the most stores, but you're more likely to find something unique at a boutique on Elmwood or an antique shop on Hertel.
As for places to dine, downtown, Elmwood Village, Allentown, Hertel are trendy neighborhoods with a lot of local restaurants.
If you are feeling adventurous, check out the Westside Bazaar and Horsefeathers Indoor Market for new wave ethnic food.

My go to beach is the one at Beaver Island State Park. Not as crowded/polluted as Woodlawn and it's an overall nice park. It's a nice destination for biking if you take the Riverwalk to Grand Island (and if you bike you avoid paying for parking!).
ah, if you want to be a local at a pub, id recommend McGaretts on Elmwood 946 elmwood ave. The bar tenders are cool, and consistent, tuesday nights are their busiest night, your accent will do quite well with the local females, trust me, just keep talking and you will have tail. also its dead in the after noonish times, so you can sit and chill and talk with them all day until pople start showing up. shit, if you do that, you will definitely see me :) my favorite place for a sunny beer
Try around this location in Fort Erie. You get to see all of Buffalo's Skyline.
Yes it is but what I did was get this valve. It's used in public spaces to mix water so it's warm but will not burn you.
I got T fittings for the supply feeds under the sink, short lines and a long line and split them to this and feed the bidet/tank off of the mixed water.
Adjust to your liking. Then run the hot water at the sink till it warms up while sitting so you don't get that cold blast first thing.
Not only do I get Warm wash but the toilet tank is filed with warm water and it no longer sweats. I just capped of the toilet tank feed as it gets its water from the hookup under the sink.
We also got a few packs of cheap wash cloths from the DG. It's like $4 for 18 I believe and a waste can. The can sits next to the toilet and we use those to dry. When they run low we toss those in the washer on hot with bleach and no softener.

That is a book I wish I had when first going through this land mine. No magic cure, a ton of snake oil salescritters out there. I'm on this road myself and an advocate for those with Parkinson's and Lewy Body.
Oh I did run into a husband/wife team. He had Parkinson's. Catch was he started treatment at age 52. Still active on the family farm at age 90. Forty years later! He just got up and worked daily. These are the people I meet who are living years with Parkinson's, but those who give up all hope and sit watching TV don't fare well.
All the best to you and your Dad.
There are a lot of great and free VPN clients out there. I'd recommend TunnelBear. Just download and use. On Android it is free for 500 MB or $2.99/month for unlimited bandwidth.
It's as simple as downloading and clicking GO.
All VPNs will slow down the connection speed a bit, but I haven't noticed that much difference from TunnelBear. Not sure what the max bandwidth is though. Plus I already have a very slow Internet speed, so maybe it's just my own personal experience.
That being said, I did just test it out on Netflix and it worked great. You can select a bunch of countries and your device will act like it is there. I chose Sweden and opened up my Netflix app and it showed a whole different movie catalog for streaming that isn't available in the US. There are even sites that show you what countries certain Netflix movies are available in so you can use a VPN to switch to that one and watch it instantly.
It's super easy.
I'm definitely not a doctor, lol. Just going off what my doctor at the time had told me, just ensure that the Vitamin D is D3. After doing a little research it helps to also take Vitamin K too, as it helps with Vitamin D absorption.
I take NOW Supplements' Mega D-3 and MK-7, which has Vitamin D3 (5000 IU) and K-2 (180 mcg). I am not sure how these amounts compare to what is normally in a multivitamin, as the multivitamin I take is a B-Complex and doesn't have any Vitamin D in it.
Since it's hard to tell the size of the capsule in that listing, it's not very big (it's about 0.75" long).
Hope this helps :)
For those of us who have to wear nice shoes (like to work):
Don't bother with Totes. They're awful. They're like weird condoms for your shoes.
Go over to McKay's on Abbott, and get yourself a pair of overshoes similar to these: https://smile.amazon.com/Ranger-Rubber-Supersized-Overshoes-Black/dp/B001280NYM/ref=sr_1_25?keywords=Rubber+Overshoes&qid=1668606800&sa-no-redirect=1&sr=8-25
They have good traction underneath, they're easy to get in/out of, and they dry quickly because they don't ball up into a flimsy ball of rubber (more exposed surface area to the air).
A Fios contractor came to a house I was renting 12 years ago wearing them. He slipped them right off and went to work.
Only problem is that I was unable to find ones that go up the ankle (something you might need Friday) - but I'm sure they exist.

You know, I don't remember exactly why we went for a heated mattress pad instead of a heated blanket... I think the rationale was that it would warm the bed up and before getting into it, then an extra blanket on top could help to hold the heat in. Honestly, I've never turned the dial up past 1 overnight (I'll dial it up to 2 or 3 to warm the bed up before getting in to go to sleep).
This SoftHeat mattress pad is the one we have, bought in Dec 2018, but it seems to be currently unavailable (at least through Amazon). This is the second one we've bought (I think we got the first one at a Bed Bath and Beyond). The reason we had to replace it is that one side stopped working, and that was probably after 10 years of use.
We never had a lick of trouble or any scares with potential fires.
Hope this helps!
If you like boardgames, feel free to stop by one of our many free board game meetups! We can be found on meetup.com, or the group has a facebook group with all the weekly meetups. I really enjoy the buffalo board gaming crowd :)
Check out meetup.com, there's a lot of events for people who just want to get out and do something fun. For me, it's the board game groups. There's open board game meetups Tues, Thurs, Sat, and Sun that I know of
John Koerner has a whole book about curses and ghosts in WNY it's actually very interesting and sorry for the long link I'm on mobile
Awesome! Thank you. When I had googled Papa Jakes Saloon I got this and knew it was right. I just tried the address and raise my rent you were right. Thank you!
Have you ever thought of just doing it yourself? Doing it freehand with a whetstone can be difficult for a beginner but there are systems out there that are pretty much fool proof.
This is the one that I use on my Wusthof Classic Ikon chefs knife, a few smaller knifes, and odd kitchen knifes. It is REALLY easy to use, made to be used by a beginner, and cost probably as much as a few sessions by a pro with the results being pretty much the same. I LOVE my sharpener and use it for my families knives too.

The app Flipp is a good way to compare your local stores and their respective weekly ads for deals and sales each week per their flyers. This helped me save a little money shopping for groceries, and you can star certain items to see what the cheapest in town is!

One of my favorite of all Buffalo traditions - it gets people outside, brings everyone together, and some of the gardens are spectacular. Something about the Garden Walk feels very old fashioned, and I hope it never changes (other than continuing to expand).
Worth mentioning the book Buffalo Style Gardens here as well.
I know it's not a local suggestions, but these boots have served me extremely well for 4 years and counting. I use these as my "heavy duty" boots, for days when I'm spending a lot of time outdoors or for large amounts of snow.
Unless you want to convert ownership of these business corridors to the residents of the community you are just funneling their wealth outside said community. They need adequate access to lending. Prime example is the food co-op that couldn't get a loan to fix up an east side location.
The economics of being poor doesn't overlap what you propose here. Most of these residents are cutoff from traditional loans.
The spending per student vs more affluent students is vastly different.
Demo by neglect is still status quo.
This is what minorities have been saying... They burned down Targets in their own neighborhood because they don't own it.
Best example is we play 200 turns of Monopoly where their labor becomes your wealth. Then you say ok you earn for yourself and question why they cannot catch up.
Probably the best real world examples for the US is within this publication.

You'll need one of these and tap off the sink supply lines.
Sloan 3326009 Valve, 1 Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001BO8TWA?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I bought T adapters, four 20in supply lines and other misc parts.
The bidet gets its feed from the tank feed via a supplied T adaptor. You'll be capping the existing tank feed off never to be used again while you have the bidet.
Under the sink I used the T adapters from Lowes to split the hot and cold lines that feed the faucet after the shut offs. They feed into the mixer valve and the output from that (warm water) feeds the tank and bidet.
I have two bidets in the house with the same setup. Nice thing is the tank gets warm water now and no longer sweats in the summer.
You'll want to run the hot water in the sink you tap off of first thing in the morning so you have warm water to rinse with and not get the shot of ice cold water as its an eye opener if you don't 😉.
Op this is the coat I’ve been wearing all winter it’s $70 and has kept me plenty warm. I also have a $300 north face jacket for sports but honestly this cheap parka is by far my favorite

better to ask permission than forgiveness. I have an entire pergola built with just a 1.5-foot hole, nail on the posts, quick-dry cement in the hole, and it holds up fine, its actually currently covered in snow as there is a covered top. big hint is with the gate, dont use one of those latching hooks, use the bolt into the loop ones. like this:

I replaced an old 10 seat, super expensive (but hand me down) with this little guy. I absolutely love it.
The price fluctuates wildly. It was $900 two summers ago. I paid $369 last summer. Took it down and put it in the basement in November. Not recommended for outdoor super cold temps.

I can also print anything off of http://www.thingiverse.com/ for $0.15 per gram. I can quote a price via e-mail in minutes, and scale the model to your price requirements. The majority of prints are under 100 grams (or $15)

Shoreline Trail is a nice scenic ride along bike path the entire way. You can easily get up to 60 miles on it. The link below is just a small part of it. Continue on it north under the GI South bridge and along the river to Tonawanda. You can then link up there to the relitively new (4 years?) rails to trails path that cuts through Kenmore and North Buffalo.
The outer harbor alonng Furhman Blvd is another nice trail. There is the Clearance/Akron trail off of Wherle that goes, well, from Clearance to Akron. The UB Bike path and then link up to the Tonawanda Creek bike path.
There really are a ton of places to ride.

You can probably find a bus that runs there. Here is a google map for ya
For meeting people, I found meetup.com is pretty good. Buffalo is know for being the "City of Good Neighbors" too, we're a pretty friendly bunch. Maybe it's because we all have to experience and survive the winters together, and tend to look out for each other :)
More and better lighting.
They make special-purpose lamps to help with Seasonal Affective Disorder. But:
I use high-powered CFL photography bulbs like these. They do an excellent job of lighting up a room with lots of bright light. The bulbs are not cheap, and they may not fit all fixtures, but they're worth it.
I also use programmable LEDs to light up my bedroom before I wake up — basically simulating dawn, even though it may be pitch black outside.
For some people, better lighting is life-changing. For others, it helps a little. Either way, it's not that expensive and it doesn't require changing your lifestyle.

I have this one. I live in the city and the only channel that gives me trouble is 4. I'm sure if I messed around more I could get it but I haven't needed to yet. Philips Modern Loop Rabbit Ears Indoor TV Antenna, 15 inch Extendable Dipoles, 4K 1080P VHF UHF, Tabletop Antenna, Digital HDTV Antenna, Smart TV Compatible, 4ft Coaxial Cable, Black, SDV7114A/27 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D4YW5HR/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_13KPRFYR3QFV3437RMMJ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
The enormous single-story stores are part of the problem.
If you build like that, and enormous parking lots separate pedestrians from the storefronts, it's not an environment that people want to walk in. Many businesses depend on foot traffic.
Half of the reason for the success of Elmwood south of Hertel is that the storefronts are on the street and that the parking, if any, is behind it. Most of the construction on Elmwood north of Hertel was built during the most recent major version of the zoning laws, written in the fifties, which took the attitude that more elbow room and more parking is a good thing. In general, that's not right -- very low population density generally makes things worse.
I started doing this route in Hamburg this summer. Not much traffic and great hills. I would also recommend riding around Grand Island which isn't as hilly, but can be a bit windy.
007 Chinese Food out of West Side Bazaar - they do chinese dim sum. I ate there today and they available via grubhub. https://www.grubhub.com/restaurant/007-chinese-food-25-grant-street-buffalo/1309059
Buffalo doesn't fly to Cleveland, and Cleveland lost its United hub a few years ago anyway.
I would be surprised if there is always a definite answer. Use Google Flights plus Southwest's site to search. You can also try the super cheap airlines up in Niagara Falls to get to some vacation destinations. And when flying international, check out Toronto also.
Welcome!
I know this is hard with a few kids (just moved with a 9-week old here, never again in the winter...), but maybe consider checking out some of the neighborhoods/towns before you move (and buy!!!) a house here. There's plenty of great places on AirBNB that you can stay at to check out what a real neighborhood is in the city, how the suburbs are in comparison, etc.

If you have any questions don't be afraid to ask here or send a message!
if you come from the southern part of elmwood itll be a right, right after the gallery onto iroquois, then that curves to the right around the back
May be misleading, but check out this page insinuating Sabres games will be on.

I was told by an Uber driver that being paid doesn't work the same as taxi service... but I didn't really ask to find out why/how. It seemed that most of my Uber drivers worked with Uber part time, as a second job. I did a quick Google search and found this. Seems like high volume drivers in major cities can make ~45K+ per year, part time drivers might make closer to ~10K a year.
Am currently househunting and see that a lot too.
For anyone living in one of those homes. You can purchase fire escape ladders for a relatively low price for peace of mind.
As someone that details for a living and has two dogs I would highly recommend a brush like one of these two.
They both work very well at pulling the dog hair out of your carpets.
Have you considered doing something like this?

Unless you have a very specific reason not to, a wireless solution will be a lot simpler and save you from hiring an electrician.
I would bet your modem is the issue. You should replace it regardless because spectrum charges you a monthly rental fee. It will pay for itself with a year. I recently purchased one of these and it works well:

If replacing the modem doesn't work then you may need to complain enough to get spectrum to investigate their wiring. Sending out a truck is their last resort and you will need to prove the problem is on their end. Any troubleshooting should be done connected directly to the modem. Otherwise they will claim your router to be at fault regardless of the evidence.
I have this antenna. You have to be sure it's programmed correctly. In my house, I get the best reception by handing it in a window. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RFLXE0A/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
