Oh hey, that's me! A friend linked me this and said I'm famous now. Didn't realize this was going to be online as well; figured it was just the paper.
For those chiding me on my dress, I just want to add we'd been de-storing ship to go into the ditch for the last 3 months. I'd been hauling gross cave couches for a couple hours before this photo, and continued afterward. Woulda been kind of stupid to show up inspection-ready.
For any who might be interested, here's a couple amazon links. Witches Be Crazy and Astro-Nuts
I have a Casio DW5600-E. They're bullet proof.
Get StarSan. It is a food grade sanitation solution. Basically it's acid. Make sure you read and FOLLOW the directions on the bottle. Wear gloves. It MUST be diluted or you can damage both your skin and the canteen. If I remember correctly, it's like 12 bucks for a bottle or two on Amazon. The purpose I use and know it for is sanitization of home brewing equipment. It will kill all the nasties.
Alternatively, you could rinse the thing with Listerine. Kills 99.9% of germs and it will smell minty fresh.
The Good stuff that can do all types of Maps from Visual Planning Corp.
Or if you have a Map that can be cut down to under 24" of width, Amazon has it. Grand & Toy also used to have this type, but wasn't able to pull the part number up again.
Generally, looking for "Laminating Film, Self-Adhesive" is the Supply Tech term for Map Tac.
Buy a boot dryer and use it every night. I bought a Peet boot dryer on Amazon for my motocross boots and use it for my combats. Warm boots every morning, no smell.
Yup. Just use one of these at the top.

I don't know why the hell you would think it's 'disingenuos' [SIC] to use a word properly, in accordance with its actual definition.
He's not a Capt(N). Rank curl is different (pointed) and his cap badge isn't Canadian (no crown). ~~I would gather a guess he's a civilian merchant Captain. Does the Asterix have a civie Captain? Could be him.~~
Confirmed, he's the civilian Captain of the ship. slide 2.
You need a suede/nubuck cleaning kit. Basically a white rubber eraser and a stiff brush. They work reasonably well.
Edit: I forgot to add that white vinegar or rubbing alcohol helps as well. Try a small spot to make sure it won't stain, but I use white vinegar, the rubber eraser, and a brush to clean my coyote Rockys.
Businesses just grab generic stock photos from the internet it seems like. Just find a military looking person, and that’s their criteria for selecting the photo.
There are companies that are using/used photos of a Russian Air softer to represent CAF members. This guy
It’s good and is slightly more challenging than the actual tests
There are a few caveats though
1.) updates are few and far between so on newer phones it’s borked on the language type questions for example: https://vgy.me/zuNV1u.png
2.) there aren’t many spatial type practice problems (72 unique questions out of ~800 total problems)
3.) the software is danish made so some questions are poorly written
Overall I would still cough up the 6.99 for it as it is your future and I have personally found it to have helped my spatial problem solving skills immensely, specifically the shape folding type problems
They're not on a TCAT for acne. They're on a TCAT for the medication they're taking to combat said acne, which can have some pretty serious fucking side-effects.
Personally, I think over the next year or two we will either see a disaster in Afghanistan on the scale of 90s Rwanda with the Taliban, AQ, ISIS, and others making it their homeland and covid hunkering down there with deep roots and no vaccine distribution or the worse choice.
With the French leaving Mali, AS will own that place in a few months, Libya through Somalia are failed states, Ethiopia and Eritrea are looking at dropping to rebels, Yemen in disarray, it forms an extremist belt in a continuous belt all the way to half way through Pakistan.
Buffered in the far East by India which is in absolute chaos from covid, the North will be a tinder box with Russia on edge as refugees start to flee and they realize saber rattling doesn't work that well, China will enter the fray with their totally unblooded force that will quickly get extended into a protracted war but hey, better than covid 22. Just a little spark....
Am I right?
Tape your feet. Everywhere you get hot spots or typically get blisters. If you blister like me you may look like you are wearing a tape sock LOL.
Also like every one said, the two sock system. Someone recommended trying a nylon (panty hose) along with the black liner or instead of. I haven’t tried that trick yet
For after, definitely only cover the blisters if you are in shoes. If you can walk around barefoot or in flip flops that’s perfect. Good padding if you need to see shoes or boots. Also don’t wear the same boots or shoes that caused the blisters the next day. Lastly soak freshly blister feet in Epsom salts to disinfect and clean them. It may burn but it’s a good burn.
My newest obsession is Allevyn padded dressings. I bought them off amazon after seeing them at a paramedic conference. Amazing comfort for walking around after. allevyn bandages on Amazon

People made fun of me for taking it out, but on a pissing rain ex, I'm sitting with a hot cup in a minute long break, and they're looking at me green with envy. Also cooks IMPs in no time.
The only illegal drug that can really picked up within your system (that I personally know of) beyond 72 hours is marijuana. This is because the THC is stored in your fat cells. and it takes about a month for it to be fully clear out of your system. But if you're joining, I imagine it would help your case to not have smoked for a long period of time.
Ninja edit: I was wrong about 30 days, it's more like 2 weeks.
I'd give the Amazon ones a shot, they're like 10% of the price of actual Peltors, and I've never had an issue. I know quite a few guys who shoot with them. Worst comes to worst, Amazon has a good return policy, so you'd only be out the cost of shipping them back.

Slap some of this stuff on your boots. It's quick and easy to apply, only needs a single coat to look decent. Avoid kiwi polish etc. because they suck.

I also used 3M medical tape on hotspot areas.
A good comprehensive workout is what you need. CrossFit works, but I wouldn't do pure CF.
Try something like Jim Stoppani's workouts, or my favourite: Train Heroic.
Anything that builds strength while also building your overall endurance is something you need.
If you can run forever but can't carry your equipment, you're useless. But you're equally useless if you can carry your equipment, but aren't fit enough to move effectively with it.
Good call on Khan Academy. Can't believe I didn't think of that. He has a TED lecture on how it all got started that's pretty interesting, and his website is great for learning all kinds of stuff.. not just math.
you're welcome.
one more thing, any set of active hearing protection you get, you might want to disassemble and hit with some of this to keep sweat and rain from corroding them over time. I got a year of heavy use out of my first set before I lost one ear. The second set I've had for 5 years now with no issue.
yeah, no problems, the strap is pretty thin actually,
The ear cups you'll want to replace if you're wearing them 24/7 though, I got these on mine
I have a set of cheaper Peltor's than the ones listed earlier and find these superior.

A couple of notes that I thought could be helpful for future or current applicants:

- I used the CFAT trainer app and this Amazon book to practice. Found both very helpful.
- You can't really study for the MOST evaluation. I would recommend practicing mental math and trying to move through the questions as quickly as possible. It almost felt like a test to measure how good you are at taking tests and not losing focus.
- Nothing to worry about with interviews. Know the trade(s) that you applied to, the training pipeline, and be prepared to answer standard interview questions.
- And above all, be patient, understand that things take time, and feel free to follow up with your recruiter every 2-3 weeks. I sent a few follow-ups and it gave me reassurance along the way.
For your head: Icebreaker Chase beanie AND Outdoor Research Frostline. Can wear them at the same time if necessary, but a thin hat while active and a thick hat while resting is best.
For your hands: Personally I find nothing keeps my hands warm that still provides dexterity so I go with a 2 glove system; Outdoor Research Vigor and lined leather mitts
I shave my head every few days with a Gillette Proshield razor. Will those be permitted at BMOQ or would I have to buy my razors from Canex?
Here's exactly what the razors look like for those unsure.
Just wondering if I should stock up on cartridges beforehand.
Not sure why you're being downvoted, a lot of people ask about trades here?
First, you're not going to learn anything classified, so that part you'll be going in blind (but so is everyone else). For the rest:
I got one recently from Canadian Tire (Non Tactical version because I don’t see me using NVGs or diving anytime soon) for about 250. Amazon has it for 218.99 here and CT was able to price match with it.
Read tarnished brass, then be amazed that we as leaders are still repeating the same mistakes over 25 years later. I am serious. When I took my commission a CWO at my unit recommended the book. I agree with him. It's essentially how not to officer.

There is WiFi available on camp, it wasn’t bad when I was there several years ago. Apparently it’s still there, and is now in the shacks, don’t know how good it is.
Local SIM cards and data are also ridiculously cheap. So you could just put a local SIM in your phone or another device to have internet access anywhere on camp.
I recommend you don’t put the SIM in your good phone, and instead buy a WiFi Puck or bring an old phone to use as a WiFi hotspot. Keep your Canadian SIM in your good phone, put it in airplane mode, enable WiFi and WiFi Calling. You can use WiFi Calling to call and text back home using your Canadian phone number without incurring roaming charges.
Always use a VPN on all your devices. Don’t cheap out, it’s worth paying for decent one. NordVPN is very popular, VPNExpress also seems to work well. Both of those will allow most streaming services to work.
There are also Chrome extensions that allow you to fake the geographical location your computer reports to websites… There’s a handful of sites that use Location Services and not just your IP to find out where you actually are, and won’t work without it enabled. As an example, (Lotto Tickets) will only allow you to login if your Location Services are on and indicate you’re geographically in Ontario, I suspect my bank does something similar. These extensions allow you to spoof the geographical location reported by your computer, so it reports a physical location that aligns with your VPN. I turn it on before accessing those specific sites, then off again when I’m done.
Nordvpn is a solid choice and they always have sales (despite the timers) Another good one is Private Internet Access. They are super cheap but I've never had issues with them.
Good luck on your deployment!
If you have an old phone you no longer use, factory reset it and bring it to use as a local phone and wifi hot spot. A lot of people don't realize this, but if you leave your Canadian SIM in your good phone and put it in airplane mode (with wifi enabled), you can use wifi calling to talk and text to home for free using your Canadian phone number.
Purchase a VPN subscription and install it on your phone, tablet, and/or computer. NordVPN, ExpressVPN, etc. are popular choices. The Russians conduct surveillance on Latvian cell networks, it's strongly recommended you use a VPN to protect your personal data.
Not BMOQ but DP1 Infantry. Don't spend too much money is my advise. I bought this from amazon and it got me through the course and exercises with my unit. Good luck on course!
You can try your mileage with these. Comes close to $11 per shirt before taxes and shipping and your chain may be more retentive on issued only, but it's 100% cotton.
Looking at the CAF app (it's surprisingly useful and user friendly) the last one was sent out in June, with an amendment in August that does seem to specify Res.
The search function in their canforgens works pretty well (certainly better than reddit's search lmao), look under "specialist officer training plans" or just "training plan" worked for me.

I would highly recommend a Vietnamese coffee filter press ( a phin ). I've found this to be the best method of coffee when hiking / camping.
Here's an Amazon link to to one - Vietnamese Coffee Filter Maker Press. Screw Down Phin Made in Vietnam. Authentic (1, Medium (8 oz))https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07K3Q9FYW/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_EN6B9N98PGNFTX882881?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Makes a legit cup of coffee, it is very lightweight and not made of glass. I store my grinds in a bag inside it, so it's very efficient storage wise.
Absolutely. The course is about 800m long (ish) and preceding the 13 foot wall is a bunch of other obstacles and a lot of running.
Its basically a race and you have to lift your body weight throughout the entire race, over obstacles. By the time you get to the 13 foot wall, energy is really lacking so only a few people have enough left to get up by themselves.
Also, right before that wall, theres another 13 foot high obstacle that you HAVE to pull yourself up a rope to the top. You really don't have much energy left.
On top of all that, the course starts out by puling a truck, carrying tree logs and tossing water filled jerry cans out of a 6 foot deep trench.
Here are a couple more pics:

Weirdly, there's a DLN course on networking. I've heard it's pretty basic, but is a decent refresher.
The best way to learn something broad like Linux skills is with a project. Start by downloading VirtualBox and installing Ubuntu (or your preferred flavour of Linux). You can even try to build a small virtual network of VMs and get them talking to each other.
Once you get your VMs up working, find a project that interests you and try implementing it. Web server, ad blocker, air traffic receiver, whatever. The great thing about virtual machines is that if you break something, you can just blow it away and start over. (Protip: take snapshots.)
You don't even need to get your project functional or finish it: if you discover something neat, pursue it. Good luck!
I wound up sending a link on this thread to coding for veterans. I thought they might be interested to see what people had to say about them.
They sent me this link to a book about transitioning.
I'm glad that you're getting so many good stories about people's life after they leave the caf. We've known a lot of people who have left, and have done very well. It's not always doom and gloom. Like everyone says. Have a plan, you'll be okay.
That being said, my kids are all teenagers, and they have a very close relationship with their father, who's been a hard sea trade, and gone for most of their lives. Our marriage is strong, and we are in love. This job doesn't have to determine whether you have a family or not.
After Chretien stupidly canned the EH-101 that was going to replace both the Labrador (which it did eventually) and the Sea King, the latter still needed to retire at some point.
The guidelines of the competition were designed to pretty much ignore the EH-101, as it was going to win again. When Canada buys something, it wants the thing to do EVERYTHING. Have you ever been near an CH-148? She's not small. If need be, it can carry 22 fully kitted passengers. So that removes a few of the smaller, already established frames.
Sikorsky stated it would deliver these helos based off of the S-92 in 4 years after the contracts were signed. That clearly didn't happen due to various things, one of which was the fly-by-wire tech not being approved as quickly as the company expected.
This is a pretty good book detailing the Sea King's replacement adventures: The Politics of Procurement: Military Acquisition in Canada and the Sea King Helicopter https://www.amazon.ca/dp/0774817151/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_ETPC1XDA8PM3Y97PSVS0

Two questions!
1: Let's talk watches. Anyone have experience with the Casio GA700-UC ? I've never been a watch-wearer until now so I'm looking for testimonials or feedback on what you guys wear/what you've found works!
2: When starting BMOQ, realistically, how much of your own personal stuff you bring with you, are you actually allowed to use during training? Like, say ya brought your own boots, underwear, sunglasses, insoles for boots, that kind of thing. Can ya keep and use it? I'm looking for things to pack that are helpful, but cutting out the stuff they just won't let you use.
Adding to u/JGorn52 and u/gooseattacksurvivor (awesome name btw), get a set of stirrup-style shirt stays.
The USMC uses them and it helps a ton with keeping your shirt down. It feels a little weird at first but you get used to it.
I use it with my short sleeve DEU shirts as well as my mess kit shirt.
I bought a cheap one from amazon about 2 years ago. Used it almost every day to run stairs when i first got it. Now I use it about 2 times a month on average. It still holds well. https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B002P60ZZC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_i_NDVXZSAQPR1APD2N5937?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I feel your pain. Email is making it hard to get any work done. Personally, I'll send like, 3 emails a week. If someone I work with sends me an email, and it requires some kind of response, I'll go talk to them in person, as its a million times faster to have a single face-to-face conversation than go back and forth with a million emails. I'm reading this book right now. Might has some solutions.
first.
the APP BattlePro will help a LOT with battle procedure and that section on it is free. also has many reports and returns you WILL use for radio procedure for my PLQ in meaford my PL WO was on the other end of the radio. you didn't want to fuck up .HIGLHY recommend this app used it myself.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ca.army.wavemobile.battlepro
second. this one isnt necessary it just helps a LOT. get a nice smallish binder or notebook that wont let too much water in. bigger than afield pad hopefully as that is woefully small for orders.
go into the battle pro app and look at battle procedure. add each heading to paper with underlines for writing on on microsoft word. dont forget to click the side arrows to expand the ones that have it you want those too. print the pages and laminate them. also laminate a few blank pages because theres some stuff you will receive in orders.
throw that shit in the binder and get brushed up on drill.

I've been using this app for a while now in preparation. Reading heavier books is probably best for those super obscure terminology questions that come up.
There's a book on amazon, its not bad for studying but as i recall it doesnt really teach you how to solve the problems. DO NOT BUY THE HARD COPY - if you have a smart phone you can get the kindle edition https://www.amazon.ca/Pass-CFAT-Canadian-Aptitude-Questions/dp/148207561X
I got a pair of these for Christmas one year. Would highly recommend.
https://www.amazon.ca/Rocky-Mens-Gore-Tex-Waterproof-Socks/dp/B0751S4RMK
This plus gold bond blue foot powder is even better.
my IP on the service is in the US, for my Canadian data package. using NordVPN I can choose the country i want or need for geo restricted content. i use google hangout voice to make calls and receive calls, with my still valid Google FI US phone number, so no issues there.
I’m going to take a wild guess and say you were issued brown boots not black; in which case a boot cleaning kit isn’t really necessary, however always better to be safe rather then sorry. You can buy Kiwi polish, brushes, etc from Canex if you’re in a town that has a base or any shoe store, Walmart, etc. Again you won’t use it but if it’s a requirement on the kit list have it anyways. >1) It's hard for me to get a good idea of what the life of an Officer is. We have those videos on Youtube, but they seem a little too propaganda for me. Where should I go to find this information?
Your first couple years in the CF will be training, BMOQ, then BMOQ-Land, or as most people know it, Common Army Phase (CAP), finally your Phase 3 EngO. After that you'll get posted, and do the job of an EngO on a day-to-day basis, probably as a Platoon Commander, which consists of mainly administration.

There isn't one type of person that's ill-fitted, we really have all kinds. The "worst" troops I've seen are the ones that dodge hard work and conveniently get "injured" when it's time to do shit.
>5) How stressful is your job? According to Statistics Canada, 20 - 25% of the forces describe "High Job Strain"
This is a very open question - it depends on far too many factors for just my response to summarize.
Long time lurker, first time asking: I've been in school for a long time and I'm applying for the Canadian Forces for an Engineering Officer position. I'm still deciding if I want to join the military, and I have a few questions for the people who are currently serving.

Essentially, it will help you get a better idea of what you should work on or learn before going for the real test. As for the ressources, there are a lot of them around, but if maths aren't your forte, you should try to find some online ressources that teachs grade 10-11 maths (sorry about that, I'm in Quebec where grades aren't the same, so I don't exactly know what would Secondary IV relate to).
