I always had trouble with stress toys bc they aren't that discreet in public. But then I heard about spinning rings and boiii it's great. It gives me something to fidget with that doesn't even look like it. I put it on my forefinger and spin it with my thumb. This is the one I got: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0721YJ8D1?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
It isn't fine, you deserve help. If your mom doesn't understand it, see if there is a school counselor that can refer you to a professional. Often times social workers are free, even without insurance.

A dermatologist isn't a bad place you start. Therapist for the behavior would be good, too.
In lieu of that, following this sub is a great starting point :)
For me, physical barriers have worked best. I wear pimple patches over things I know I will pick at, so I can't reach it without deciding to take off the patch first. I also bought some compression gloves from Amazon, so I can't "scan" my face or scalp for imperfections to pick at.

Also - check out "sebaceous filaments." What most of us know as "blackheads" on our noses and foreheads is actually just a pore with normal stuff in it. There are skincare-y things to extract blackheads, but they don't work well and are not gentle, likely because they are targeting a problem that isn't really a problem - and making us all think we have it! Marketing at its best. But yeah, sebaceous filaments are normal and most people have them. If you haven't noticed anyone else with them, well... they haven't noticed yours either. Best thing to do is leave the alone, maybe get some skincare stuff (salycylic acid is most effective, from my research) - avoid picking here too!
I don't have any diagnosed problems like OCD, so grain of salt depending on what your problem is :) My picking problem is very similar, my mom really truly thought she was helping me get all the pimples out of my skin, she didn't know any better on skincare.
Look up finger cots on Amazon or check your local drug store.
Apply healing salve and keep them on over night.
Here are the ones I have but there are many different brands. Reusable Rubber Finger Gloves(tm) for Durable and Versatile Finger Only Coverage
Hi! Habit substition is absolutely critical to success in managing csp. Charles Duhigg's book "The Power of Habit" helps explains this and is very down to earth (written for non-medical people). You need a hobby to turn to when you are stressed that is fun and non-self-destructive. I keep playdoh on hand at home, wear stretchy bead bracelets when I am out. My hobby is embrodery and crafts. Go to a craft store and walk around. I'll bet you find something a lot more fun and positive to do than picking. :). Don't give up. You'll get better! I am almost completely free of picking and you can get there too! It is about learning your trigger points and developing strategies to deal with them in a positive way or neutral way. Read as much as you can about csp as well. Study yourself as to when you you mostly pick, where you do it, what implements you use if any, what you are feeling right before you pick. MIn other words. Approach the csp as a detective trying learn about how you as an individual act out your csp. Only with knowledge of your csp can you develope effective strategies to deal successfully with it. You are far far from alone in your struggle. None of us will ever get rid of stress and anxiety. It is a part of life. But we can learn to deal with it in healthier ways. A big hug to you! :)
Amazon heh. Here’s the specific ones I bought:
20 Pieces Cut Resistant Finger... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08FRBMYKD?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
They’re about as comfortable as bandaids but with the benefit of not making your skin all gross and..band-aidy. And you can reuse them haha
I got a cheapo spinning ring on amazon a couple years ago (I literally paid $1 or so for it) and it did help me. It lasted me quite a while, but since it's cheap you could buy a couple to stock up in case any others get damaged :) I'll see if I can find the link
Edit: found it! This is the same ring, it's a 3-pack for $3.99 and has great ratings. This might help more! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HMA56K0/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_0zx9ub036WNXH
Totally!! I just got a cheapo one on amazon, and despite the subpar reviews, it's given me no issues personally (i had just wanted to try it out cheaply but kept it for a long time!): https://www.amazon.com/Bandai-Mugen-Puti-Bubble-Keychain/dp/B000SKIJ50
I’d definitely second moisturizing and avoiding mirrors! I’d also like to add keeping your nails short really helps, and I personally like to use a peel-off face mask on my non-dominant hand to simulate picking at skin? I haven’t had any irritation so far and it usually does the trick for me (especially in high stress situations or when I’m trying to focus deeply on something). I usually use one from my local pharmacy but here’s one on Amazon at a similar price point. One tube usually lasts me a month or so, so I find it’s a pretty manageable solution financially, but your budget may differ from mine. Best of luck nonetheless!
My personal faves are these from Amazon - 96 patches for 8 dollars! Acne Absorbing Covers -... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075FWN6V7?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Don't feel at all silly for spending what you did, these things are a bit tricky! Sometimes they are hard to find, and comparing prices sucks when each brand has different amounts in the package. In any case, I hope they work for you, best of luck!! :)
Silly putty, elastics, squishy toys or whatever you personally like to help you stay away from your skin whenever you are facing a situation that requires sitting still for any length of time. Personally, I now have a bunch of squishy toys I got off amazon specifically so I could destroy them instead of my own skin whenever I feel the urge.
I got mine on Amazon. Specifically, this one. I liked how trendy the shades were and how it comes with everything you need.
It's been great so far. I've been using it for around 4 months. Nothing has broken. Very high quality and easy to use. To remove, I just buff the top coat, and soak my nails in acetone with cotton balls wrapped in foil.
I did these nails 2 weeks ago. You can see how well it has held up despite my nails growing in. :)
Otherwise, there are many kits on Amazon you can find. Hope this helps.
Hello! Just trying to help. I’m sure you’ve tried things to help your KP. I’ve tried a bunch and what has worked for me has been:
1) an exfolimate: https://www.amazon.com/exfolimate-Face-Body-Exfoliation-Exfolimate/dp/B00SVDLGHY
2) This is weird, but Neutrogena SPF 100 has really helped. I know it’s sun screen, but it’s worked for me. I put it in my arms before bed.
3) gluten free/ low gluten.
Lots of people say amlactin or some glycolic lotion or loofa, KP duty, etc. But everyone is different. I also like Palmers coco butter gel oil moisturizer. Best wishes!
These are the best option if you don’t want to look like you’re wearing anything in public.
I also use them when I’m sleeping and use Aquafor when I’m just hanging out at home. Your skin needs to be exposed to air too so make sure it gets some, but I have more success if I keep it covered because I’m less likely to touch it.
I think feeling denied "the reward" of self soothing that picking brings may occur because there is nothing else in place to bring that calming (for example, a dieter resisting cake when hungry but not replacing it with a healthly food to fill the dieter's hunger.) My experience is that the way that has worked for me is to redirect my anxiety into another activity rather than picking. Charles Duhigg's book (The Power of Habit) explains this very well. You'll know you have succeeded in your replacement efforts if when you are stressed you crave the new activity instead of picking to soothe yourself. For example, if I am really stressed I really want to pick up my cross stitch project and mindlessly sew rows of cross stitches in a daze (similar to the picking trance) until I feel calmer. You'll get so you crave the neutral harmless replacement activity to soothe yourself rather than the picking.
You have to substitute the picking for another habit that soothes you but doesn't harm you. It sounds so simplistic but that, in my view and personal experience, is the only thing that helped me to stop. I found the book The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg very helpful. But, also, you have to get to the place where you truly want, really want, to stop. If you are ambivalent, there is no judgment here. Csp is a tough tricky disorder and hard to kick. All the best :)
This just a thought but there is a phenomena of being in a third person - a more rational side of yourself looking on talking to you. I had that same experience when I was in therapy and I described to my therapist and she said that was good because the rational part of myself was explaining to me and that in time that rational objective voice will become part of your conscious self. The good thing is that the rational part of yourself is speaking to you, which is step one. I found that in time, my rational self merged with my conscious self and I was able to talk myself out of the trance sooner and sooner. Eventually, that voice became so ingrained, it did stop me. Also, you have to practice using other neutral stress relievers. Charles Duhigg's book, The Power of Habit is a great way to understand the process of habit substitution.
It sure sounds like CSP. If you can, go a therapist for evaluation. The Calm Hands site has a lot of people with hand focused Csp. A good therapist can teach you better coping skills. If you can't afford a therapist, read as much as you can about CSP. The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg is very good. Hope things go better. Best wishes m
For heavens sake! Please tell your therapist! That's step one. You have nothing to be ashamed of! This issue is the elephant in the room. Your therapist probably is waiting for you to bring it up. Please promise me you will tell. Knowing why when you pick is very important. Great book to get: The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg.
Try therapy putty, it helps my DD.

I got an idea yesterday to help myself stop picking at my legs when I saw these at CVS. Last night I put one on each of my fingers and just kept them on.
They look dumb as hell and are uncomfortable, but they work. Especially if you're just hanging around the house and your fingers reflexively go straight for your healing scabs. They make you aware of what your fingers are doing, and your nails are basically useless so you can't scratch at your skin.
I think I would be okay if I only put them on my thumbs + index and middle fingers. I don't really scratch with my ring or pinky fingers, and with the protectors on 3/5 fingers, that's enough of an active reminder not to do it.
I think I'm going to get a fidget ring to wear, too. I don't know how stimulating that will be, though (I don't want to wear ugly jewelry and I think all the normal-looking rings do is spin around), but it's worth a shot.
Hiya! So it can be whatever! I got the idea from someone who installed a red light bulb in her bathroom. I’m not able to do that bc of the way my bathroom is, so I bought some red fairy lights off amazon ! These ones I think: https://www.amazon.fr/BOLWEO-5-m-LED-Lichterkette/dp/B01H87F6JM/ref=mp_s_a_1_20?dchild=1&keywords=red+fairy+lights&qid=1623788838&sr=8-20
it has this sort of effect (pic taken in a hurry with some daylight coming thru the window, so that slightly messes with the effect, but you get the idea) : https://imgur.com/a/7RKo6EX
hope this helps!!! :’)
I got these ones so you can experiment with a lot of colours, I like the purple because it’s harder to see fine details and it looks cool :)
I’m so sorry love, I know exactly how painful and frustrating this is. I recommend using these bandages for any of the raw, freshly picked spots. They have been an absolute lifesaver for me because you can cut them to whatever size you need, put them on picked spots and leave them on for at least 8 hours. They are incredibly helpful in letting the skin heal. Sometimes they stay on in the shower, but sometimes they come a bit loose when they get drenched in the shower. so for the bigger spots that need to stay covered for a whole day or so, I cut the sticky parts of a bandaid off and use that to cover those spots. I hope that makes sense, and I hope it helps you. Please let me know if you have any questions, I have struggled with skin picking for over 15 years. Sending love and healing 💜💜💜
Whoops, posted the reply in the wrong spot(sorry, I'm a newbie). Here it is again-
LED is useful because it provides enough light to see what I am doing but not enough to see details on my skin. Not sure exactly what I have but here are some similar ones on amazon- night lights
I just tell the stylist about it before they even start. If it's a new salon, I call and sort of explain I have scalp picking issues and ask for someone with experience and who is very gentle. No issues so far, just one shampoo girl who was super rough but I told her to be a bit gentler and it was okay.
Here's my current scalp picking remedy list (they have to be used together, make sure you have access to all things here at all times):
fidget toys. My favorites are this monster and the average fidget cube. Alternatively, a scalp massager. Keep these around to keep your hands busy.
When at home, I wear a head turban. That one is super nice and soft, but I can still run my fingers under the edges, so for extra bad days, I use:
A wig. A $15 wig from amazon + two wig caps. Why the two caps? Well, I have long thick hair, but also because it's so tight (worse with the wig on it) that I cannot run my fingers under the edges of the wig cap + wig combo. Since it's "cuter" than the turban (at least I feel "cuter"), in case of an emergency, I can go out wearing the wig.
n-acetylcysteine. I am currently on 1200mg, plan to get up to 2200 mg. I take 600mg pills. For me, it made me sort of anxious at first, hence why I'm going on 600mg increments (every week, increase by 600mg), until I get to 2200mg. It's made a decent difference so far, combined with the stuff mentioned above. However, today (first day on the higher dose), I feel super sleepy, so I hope that passes. I also take glutathione (500mg), as I read somewhere it helps with the absorption of the former supplement.
I really like Sundown Naturals vitamin e oil. The way they designed the bottle is really easy to use so it doesn't get everywhere. I bought mine on amazon for about $9. Saves my lips on a daily basis.
May I make a suggestion? Get one of those PediPerfect foot file things. I use it on my fingers and my feet - it smooths all of the rough edges and hangnails so I can't pick at them. It really, really helps. I use it, then put on some moisturizer.
I know that PediPerfect is kind of expensive, but you can also use a regular fine grit nail file to do the same thing. I get my files from Sally Beauty for about $1.75.
In a salon they use a uv light, but I've been using these at home with no light or anything and it works great!
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VMBS197?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZRFQWH1?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
i would suggest these bad boys if it does get to the point where you can safely bandage it, these seem to make my skin heal faster
It's the sort that you put on blisters. They make them specifically for acne (little circles) but I just buy the big rectangular ones for knees or ankles and cut them into pieces. Like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000Y8W50G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_PW6MCb2P4FTBA They're great because they soak up puss/whatever weeps out of spots you pick.
It has to be something you do with your hands (in my experience). I think leaving my hands free in that emotional state would lead to trouble. It has to be anything like knitting, crochet, adult coloring books, etc. - anything that you can pick up and do "compulsively" in a benign activity until you calm down- you are using your hands in a repetitive calming manner, zoning out like we all do in picking and getting the reward of stress release without harming ourselves.
The pattern changes to 1. Stress triggers urge to pick 2. Do new hobby (replace the picking with this). 3. Result: calming.
You are simply changing step 2. I really recommend reading The Power of Habit. It explains this very well. Called: habit substitution.
It has worked for me.
Please forgive yourself for the slip! Please try to understand that this is a medical disorder which CAN be managed. We have OCD manifesting as skinpicking - 2% of people with OCD are compulsive skin pickers. Stop blaming yourself please! csp is not caused by poor willpower or character flaws. Our brain chemicals are the problem. Success with managing this has to do with reprogramming our brains to switch our stress coping mechanisms to non-destructive ones. Getting better is a step by step journey. Set tiny goals and celebrate your small successes. For example, "my goal is to stop myself sooner in an episode." Keep a timer to record how fast you stop each time. You can also count the number of times you scan each day. Measuring is crucial to make your successes real. Good quotes that help: "You can't manage what you don't measure.". "A beaver cannot fell a great tree with one bite." Inch by inch, it's a cinch.". (Of course, it's not a cinch but it talks about how one baby step after another will get you to your goal.) I can recommend a great book to you that explains how to change a habit - The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. I found it extremely helpful! Remember, you have not failed until you stop trying. Baby steps. Inch by inch. You can do this.
You are doing great - picking only the spots on chest and back shows you can stop yourself from cascading in to a full fledged picking session. That is huge! You are developing the ability to stop much sooner! As to the constant thinking about your csp, that will ease in time the less you pick. For me having a hobby that requires mindless hand motion really helps me relax and dissipate my anxiety and keeps my hands busy. I do hand sewing and embroidery. I crave it when I am stressed because it now gives me the same release from anxiety that picking used to.'I use silly putty when I can't do embroidery. Also, I read "The Power of Habit" by Charles Duhigg And I found it immensely helpful!
Have you looked into habit substitution? Charles Duhigg's The Power of Habit is down to earth and very readable. He explains how to do habit substitution! All the best in your journey to wellness
Don't feel alone! This problem is more common than you may realize. It will get better once you start learning behavior modification strategies.
Thank you again! I just read the article and it is really helpful. I book marked it to read again. I am very scientifically oriented, also, and it is really enlightening to me to read about this and understand the biochemical basis for habits. It gives me an incentive to track my behavior in relation to the skin picking. And to reward myself for good behavior. Your posts have made a real difference for me in a positive. Thank you again! I read some interesting work on a concept called "habit chunking". Where our brains put habits into a sort of package like a prepackaged meal and sets up the habit sequence to fire automatically upon the stimulus. Also, there is a book by Charles Duhigg titled "The Power of Habit" which I found really helpful. Also, for me, learning recently about "decision fatigue" to explain why it is harder (for me) to not pick when tired. I type on an iPhone so it is laborious. Thus, the short typo ridden descriptions of things I have read!
Try to find your control in a neutral way (hobbies, fidget toys - fun stuff). Try to switch your compulsive behavior over to something like that. They become just as compulsive as the negative behavior and are a lot more fun. Picking stops being fun and just becomes a self-destructive behavior which soothes only for a few moments followed by misery. I can't tell you how many many hours of my life I threw away picking before I got better. Charles Duhigg's book titled "The Power of Habit " explains habit substitution in a down to earth interesting way. Hugs :)
Step one= anxiety. Step 2=pick skin to calm down (hyper focus on skin relieves worry - trance is like a drug). Step 3=reward: temporary release of anxiety. Substitute a neutral habitl for step 2. Charles Duhigg's best selling book The Power of Habit explains habit substitution really well.
Use any fidget toy that works for you to keep your hands busy especially during the times you are most vulnerable to picking. Most people are most vulnerable at night and when tired, and very vulnerable when stressed or anxious. (Ocd is an anxiety disorder so we are anxious a lot!! Get enough sleep. Go to bed as soon as possible when tired. Sleep resets the brain and when you wake up the urge most probably will be gone. To break a cycle during the day, if you can, take a nap with your fidget toys in your hands. Be in places where you have to show your body- gyms, pools, etc. Get a regular exercise program. The more aerobic the better. Stay out of your room as much as possible. Study at the library. Stay out among people where you would be too embarrassed to pick. Only be alone in your room when tired enough to go to sleep.
Because you and I and the rest of us with compulsive body focused compulsive behaviors, manifest our OCD by compulsive skin picking, be aware that fidget toys will substitute the negative self-soothing behavior with a neutral one. Stay out among people - better for your mental health and will really help you not pick.
You stopped picking before, you can stop now. Tell yourself when you want to pick that your are stronger than the picking, because you are. You have proven that before. :)
Read Charles Duhigg's book The Power of Habit. It explains how to change habits really well.
Have you checked into the Reddit website CalmHands? There is a link on the right side of this page. It is has a lot of tips from nail biters there. It seems to be mainly nail biters there. But because of the skin picking you might find both sites helpful. I am skinpicker about 90% cured thru therapy, medication and effort. It gets easier every time you stop before a cycle really gets a hold of you. I like Charles Duhigg's book called The Power of Habit. It explains the steps of habit formation and how to substitute a healthy self-soothing habit for a negative one. I find reading comments to posts really helpful. If you can (moneywise) see a therapist to help. If not there is so much you can do on your own from studying other people's methods. Remember this is an OCD related disorder and antidepressants are very often prescribed as an adjunct to other methods. Best of luck to you!
I start to pick too while reading, watching tv, doing anything where one hand is free! I am starting to leave silly putty my toy of choice all over my apartment so I can grab it when I start. I also have to. Carry it in my hand at home after evening sets in when I am tired. My unconscious pick times and places follow a pattern. So now I have decided to literally put the silly putty in my hands before I sit in a certain place. Once I start it is very hard to stop. My therapist once said to me "don't stimulate the node!" Meaning if you stop as soon in the action you can you have a much better chance to back out of the action. The book "The Power of Habit" by Charles Duhigg is great in learning about habit cycles. Also, in my most vulnerable times I put a bandage on the worst areas to try to let those areas heal. Any barrier can slow you down.
Unfortunately Fitbit does not have an open API to let us do that. It would be really really hard, and kind of illegal. We do have an Android Wear app that does this, and we're getting around to Apple Watch. It would be nice to put it on things people already have though.
I use Time Since. I like that it times smaller time intervals, since I struggle to go a day without picking. It's pretty simple and has a simple widget too.
I also used to use the MotivAider app with the Autistic kids I did behavioural therapy with. I don't seem to be able to find it. However, if you can get your hands on one of these it could be just what you're looking for. You can set it to vibrate automatically at a certain interval, so you know to give yourself a reward. They're also easy to reset, so really easy to use. I would buy one myself, but they're only available in the US.
This is exactly what my app does. You don't mark off "I picked" moments as a yes or no thing, you mark them off in a scale ranging from "Didn't do it" (what the article describes - thinking about it but not doing it) through "Started, stopped" (for when you had to pick just a little) all the way to "Stopped when it hurt" (those horrible moments when you're off to get the bandaids). The most important thing is that it gives you something to do at those moments, rather than just thinking about it and not doing it. You get feedback (a score, a smiley face, a history log). You get to take pictures (if you want to track positive progress), and most importantly you get a quick diary form where you can spend a few seconds jotting down why that urge was so difficult to overcome.
P.S. - I apologize if that was spammy. I've been picking my skin all my life and I get very excited when I see the mainstream press covering our problem, and people openly talking about it.
oh hun that looks like it hurts. but I've been there so many times before.
I've had some success at decreasing my cuticle picking with Non stick medical tape, cotton gloves at night with loads of hand cream and Neosporin and NAC Supplement (NAC was recommended by my psychiatrist colleague). I try to remind myself we are at a huge risk of infection when we pick the cuticles. Sending good vibes your way.
Literally read a thread on reddit can’t remember where it was but I read a book on the compulsion and it literally changed my life straight away after 4 days I stopped now in remission finding out why we do what we do Such an amazing read https://www.amazon.com.au/Skin-Picking-Freedom-Finally-Stop/dp/0991234723/ref=asc_df_0991234723_nodl?tag=googleshopmob-22&linkCode=df0&hvadid=341774831926&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6713233763859290742&hvpone=&hvptwo=&h...
I can totally relate. For me I think the thing that works the best is to not have spots on my scalp to pick at. I have tried everything, even prescription stuff and the only thing that helped even a bit was this cream https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P4Z3CXB?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details If I put enough of it on there is no way for me to pick. Of course I have to wash my hair even more but that seems to help too.
It depends on how new or old the scars/marks are. I saw improvement after 3-4 weeks on my shoulders for some newer ones. I think my older ones took maybe 8 weeks.
I know that Sephora sells body makeup like dermablend and this: https://jet.com/product/detail/e65da6f5a1054ca78593370ca880167f?jcmp=pla:ggl:nj_cons_gen_health_beauty_a3:personal_care_cosmetics_skin_care_a3_other:na:PLA_348226380_24173428380_pla-156530710620:na:na:na:2&code=PLA15&gclid=CLXVkImL99ICFReB... I think the second may work best, I've never used it personally though. EDIT: it also comes in a spray form I believe.
I heard from my derm do NOT use Neosporin. I am not sure what the rationale was exactly but something to do with developing super MRSA. If you are prone to staph infections I would probably refrain.

I just started wearing gloves while I'm working (I work at a desk/computer) as that's when I tend to do it most. It sucks but I assume I'll get more used to wearing them and its helping so far.
Been working through this book I saw someone else recommend:
In the end its mostly about finding ways to replace with other coping mechanisms and/or block yourself from doing it. Not easy, but I'm trying. You're not alone
The alternative honey salves that are sold on Amazon are also very good.
I got this one (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MGDX47U?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details) since it had next day delivery and the one you recommended would take several days.
I put it on last night. have to say that i didn't immediately notice a reduction in redness and at first I thought "this isn't doing anything" but i did keep thinking that my skin healed a lot faster than expected when I looked at it this morning. Hard to say if it's due to the silver gel, but I think it may be. Thank you for the rec!
2 questions: Do you have any idea what the difference is between colloidal silver and silver nitrate for skin? And, are you at all worried about Argyria?
Sadly, I can’t give any pointers on how to stop. I’m still trying to figure that out myself.
But I can tell you what has been helping me heal these, which has gotten rid of some of the temptation.
Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! The dry, flaky skin is what tempts me to start, but using a combo of good moisturizer and cuticle oil has helped get rid of those. Bonus point is you wear plastic gloves after applying! Either the gloves or these silicone finger cots.
I suggest you read this book, it’s called the man who couldn’t stop. My psychiatrist and also therapist recommended to me.
It’s a light read and I believe you will relate to a lot of the emotions that the author portraits. In the meanwhile try to keep your hands busy, wear a cap and seek help. I’m better thanks to my docs.. will power alone wasn’t enough. Dms open if u want to talk!
It’s available on zlib too fyi.

I feel so happy for you. I know the pain and the struggle.
I need some advice on how to reduce my face picking. What strategies did you follow?
What usually works best for me is to apply some cicalfate (https://www.amazon.com/Eau-Thermale-Restorative-Protective-recommended/dp/B07XG1PLJF) and while the cream is on I can't pick or at least it discourages from doing so.
thanks!
You are NOT disgusting!
I like [these acne patches](www.etsy.com/listing/1007345683) because they have a larger bandage that is almost the size of a nose strip! It will definitely help heal the spot faster AND provide a smooth texture so when you do touch the spot, it doesn’t tempt you to pick.
Another option are these bandages Once, I was shaving my face, decided to shave my forehead for exfoliating reasons, CUT MY FOREHEAD SO FUCKING BADLY, and I used these to heal the cut. It healed super quickly! Like shockingly quickly. BUT. It was gross. The bandage keeps all the fluid on the cut, but I don’t have a scar.
For me, I struggle with touching certain spots. That’s why I like bandages. Controlling the compulsive behavior isn’t always in my wheelhouse but I can prevent bacteria and infection by covering the spot with a smooth bandage so it doesn’t feel tempting.
If you like the sensation of pulling scabs off, I suggest getting a clay mask, like the Aztec clay mask. Let it dry, then pick the flakes off. It scratches that same itch, but less damage to my body! If you REALLY need some physical sensation, you could even apply it to a hairy part of your body, like an arm or a leg. It’s all about harm reduction.
You’ve got this. You’re not disgusting. I’m sorry you’re struggling right now.
I have the same problem. I used these to stop picking while I was doing accutane treatment for acne: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015QNN0T8/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_8JAP25S517YY3VVF8DSJ
I wore them all day and all night for a while. It was a bit rough to feel my laptop keyboard for work, but it was fine unless I was in a hurry... then I'd take them off, focus on work, and put them back on one I was unstressed. :)
I'm also lightly allergic to bandaid adhesive. It's generally fine, but my skin turns red under the adhesive and if I leave a bandaid for an extended time, it stays that way for a week or two. I had to cover a mole removal and keep it moist for a couple weeks, the constant changing of bandaids had me in tears by the third day. Called the dermatologist office, they said to use cotton gauze cut to size and paper tape instead. I was able to find both in my local drug store near the bandages. :)
Sure! Boho-Magic 925 Sterling Silver Moon Phase Spinner Ring for Men and Women Celestial Jewelry https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0823HPCJC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_8YK4TBRG295F6874T5R5?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 I got this one years ago when It was only 25$, worth it though it hasn’t turned green yet and I wear it constantly
Maybe try getting some Tegaderm dressings: 3M Tegaderm 1624W Transparent Film Dressing 2 3/8" x 2 3/4" - Window Frame Box: 100 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001PLYV5I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_9F5XQ9N3QTFQPT6ET2XP (doesn’t have to be via Amazon of course I’m sure it’s cheaper at a drug store)
These work for me unlike bandaids which tend to move, peel off. Also they hold ointments well and instead of picking you can poke at it which is kinda funny or just cover with another dressing so you don’t have to look at it. The dressing usually lasts all day, plus there’re a lot of different sizes so maybe using a few small ones is easier for areas that see more movement (knees, arms, etc). Sorry this was wordy, but I hope it’s helpful ❤️

You're welcome! Your post just kinda got me in the feels and I had to respond. I was in the same space just a few years ago and it was so isolating. Finding this sub was an absolute trip and changed the way I viewed myself and the behavior.
Turns out it's so common there's even a workbook available: Overcoming Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors - Someone even wrote a SONG about it! It's crazy that this doesn't get talked about more.
If you're looking to bring it up with your doctor then the fancy term is dermotillomania, or excoriation disorder, but most should be familiar with skin-picking as a behavior. I tend to liken it to nail-biting when trying to explain to others, sometimes that makes it easier for people to get their heads around.
It's believed to be linked to a bunch of other disorders, like ADHD, OCD or PTSD. I feel like the trick to figuring out what's behind it is to observe yourself, take note of when it happens and how you feel before, during and after picking sessions. Think about what the behavior does for you.
I hope this helps! X
Someone above mentioned gelx nails and I second that! They are actually called full cover gel nails, gelx is a specific brand’s system.
You’ll need an LED light but the Beetles kit mentioned includes the lamp and other things you’ll need. They should fit better than glue on nails and the gel won’t break down the same way glue does, which gets porous and allows water in even with a good initial seal.
The beetles kit is here: Beetles Amazon Link
They take some practice so I recommend watching videos on how to prep and apply the nails. You can find some good examples from Long Hair Pretty Nails on YouTube, search for her kiara sky gelly tips review. The Beetles system doesn’t require you to etch the inside of the nail tip though, so keep that in mind. Check out the Full Cover Nail Tips Support Group on Facebook for troubleshooting and product recommendations.
I made the mistake of paying for Manis for way too long. After realizing how much it helped my picking, I ended up buying a whole UV kit to do this at home. It was under $45 for EVERYTHING when I bought mine. They've gotten cheaper. Can also get other color bundles off Wish for dirt cheap.
I usually redo my nails every 2 weeks, cause UV lasts so much longer than normal lacquer.

It’s called Overcoming Body-focused Repetitive Behaviors. I would eat my hat if you read it and it didn’t help. Not gonna lie, I bought it back in June 2021 and it literally took me 6 months to get through it and implement the plan. I just wasn’t really ready to work on it then.
I’m so thankful for everything I learned me it. There is only one time in my life that I can remember where I went a whole month without drawing blood from picking.

For me the key is to ensure there’s nothing to pick, which of course is difficult because for them to heal you have to leave them alone. this stuff makes it a lot easier for me as it helps them heal quickly overnight. If money is tight, pure glycerin from the drug store would also help a lot.
Yea the French nail manicures nails at the salon are the cheapest acrylic nails. But, these hydrocolloid are cheaper than the others but they go out of stock often.

Buy some Bactine at the pharmacy, it has lidocaine in it. It will definitely help with the pain, then vasoline and bandage over. I used to pick my feet the way you did. But shaving your heals after a shower and then continue to moisturize will ease of picking.
I personally us a a double edged razor like this. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002A8JO1Q/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_Y18VC4GN7SY5ZDVKYQKP?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

You don't shave it every, but every so often, but it important to moisturize right after. Doing this well help the crack heels have all those "hang nails" popping out.
I recommend these : COSRX Acne Pimple Patch (96 counts) Absorbing Hydrocolloid Spot Treatment Fast Healing, Blemish Cover, 3 Sizes https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014SAB948/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_XHYP9RWY82EA9VGVNWP1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Much cheaper than drugstore ones and they're good quality.
Test patch it beforehand. Everyone reacts differently to everything.
Here is an excellent thread on various oils
I use it during warmer months to combat my redness and scarring (since it goes hard below a particular temperature and I really cbf warming it up...)
u/tacticalcop I love you!!
You are absolutely on the right track. You know what's up, you have sought professional help, you have identified the tools and a plan, you have planned for relapses and downturns on the way (the right non-perfectionist approach which works), and most of all you are safely sharing for accountability. You keep this up and you will not deplete your motivation and simply fix it by having this correct system in place.
I can promise you that you will overcome it. Literally I can. Because my back story is very similar to you and I overcame it after a long period and only through the deliberate effort of relying on tools and plan similar to yours with sharing and accountability.
You've got everything right: the phyical barrier of bandages, the meditatin part (i called it self-reflection, same thing), i bought something similar to this to fidget (but didn't end up using a lot), taking pictures and logging your journey— you've got it all.
Now, only armageddon has to happen to be in your way. You got this! Be kind to yourself like a sincere friend. Don't overjudge or overthink. In weeks youe skill will be healed.
One baby step a day, let's do it`!
A lot of people recommend bandaids which are ideal because of the thickness but I hate then the adhesive sticks to my nail and damages the surface. Another no-damage idea is those little finger covers for crafts that are like latex gloves just for fingers. Here's a link to buy them. There are also silicone finger covers for people with arthritis available on Amazon and they are thicker than the latex covers.
If exercise is helpful to you, but you don't have time, maybe try the exercise where you stand up and shake your whole body (maybe even jump up and down a bit) for about 45 sek- 1 min. I study physicaltherapy and we had a clinical psychologist educate us in this along with mindfulness and meditation a while ago. Shaking your body (as you would see some animals do sometimes) should affect your brain activity and relieve some restlessness or perhaps build up tension (the psychologist based some of her techniques on Richard J. Davidson). If you have time, maybe do some breathing exercises afterwards or meditate once in a while to relieve tension (I could recommend the Headspace app if you are curious and new to meditation).
I'm sorry I dont have any evidence saying that this shaking-exercise or meditation could work in the case of picking, but this works for me personally when I can't exercise to calm down, so I thought I would throw it in anyway, though I know meditation is not an instant solution. If you try it out, I would love to hear how it works for you!
I’ve been using this stuff. I plop a gob of it on and it seems to help. It’s also globby so it keeps me from touching my skin because I don’t want to get it on my fingers.
https://www.amazon.com/CeraVe-Protectant-Petrolatum-Ceramides-Fragrance/dp/B016F3MESG
I use this face mask for the exact same effect! Maybe a bit safer than nail polish since it’s meant for skin? But I’m no doctor, so not judging, just a suggestion. I use it on my arms for absent minded picking. 😊Peel-Off Gel Mask
This is the one I'm using. I can't remember doing any research when I bought it. I think I only chose this one for it's low price, so I'm sure there's better out there.

I am surprised how well it works!
You probably can't stop the urge, but I'm glad you have your fiance there to help you out. It feels so shitty at the time (at least in my experience) to have the mirror confiscated, but I have always been so grateful in the long run. I definitely recommend either cutting your nails super short (works pretty well for me) or getting fake nails (I saw that works on another post) to make picking harder as well.
I find that getting hydrocolloid pimple patches to put on any pimples (or healing pimples) can be super helpful to keep myself from picking subconsciously because I can't actually touch the pimple, I don't tend to go for them in the mirror because I can't see them, and then they also tend to heal the pimples super quickly.
IMO these ones from CosRx are the best: https://www.amazon.com/Cosrx-Pimple-Master-Patch-24patches4sheet/dp/B014SAB948. $13.20 for a four pack (96 patches total) is also a good deal.

Here's what i got. For me, I pick with my thumb and index finger, so having a cover on my thumb is a physical reminder when I put it to my mouth and doesn't allow for a firm grip to do as much damage. It's really annoying to wear, so I usually wear them for a couple days at a time and that helps me reset my compulsion a little bit...
I use Comfrey cream. It used to be $9 per tube, but it had jumped up to $20-30 unfortunately. However one tube lasts me a long, long time. I only apply a peppercorn size directly to acne scars once a month, pat it in gently, and I no longer have red pigmentation from any scars acquired in my twenties (30yo now). It works because the herb comfrey has a compound that promotes cellular regeneration in addition to pain relief properties! Can’t recommend enough. One tube has lasted me 3 years and I store it in the fridge. Niacinamide also works well but this it gentler on my sensitive skin. Traumaplant Comfrey Cream
I have a chain spinner ring (like this one) that I've had for years and I wear almost all the time. I like this one in particular because I can hook my fingernails into the chain links and approximate that picking sensation. After being broken in, it spins quite nicely and I can take it off and fiddle with it using both hands. It's helped me immensely.
Don't keep that one open like that. There are these stich-bandaid things i use when I give myself open wounds, they look like this and they allow you to close the wound to minimize scarring/infection/other possibilities. Whenever you take a shower, sanitize the area and put a new one on until the skin has closed itself up enough, then start putting petroleum jelly on it.
Tbh I've given up on trying to look "cool" with my fidgets. People ask and it's like, I'm super anxious! Or all you have to say is you feel more comfortable when your hands are moving. Like having restless legs is pretty normal, you have restless hands! Just a thought, but for my eating disorder, I always had my "tangle" at the table because it helped. And not many other things did.
So I started out with tangles, because they were introduced where I went to treatment for my ED. I tried that square thing they were selling a lot at one point, but I never liked it. And it made some noise so I felt like people would be more "offended" by it. I like the stuff that's quiet, that's not gonna annoy other people.
Now there's this bubble wrap kind of thing. I actually ordered like a big bag of different fidgets that had a couple in there. I mainly use the regular size one. But they have one on a keychain! I use it when I'm driving because I pick when I'm driving, too.
So the two things I mentioned that worked for me, I kind of made into a game? At least, with the tangle, you can tangle it up to where it looks like perfect? And this new bubble wrap thing (of course I have perfectionism issues) but I like go down each row, flip it, etc, and then when it's all one way, I can put it down for a while.
The blue box thing has like a pinball in it, and one of those was in my bag, and it made me think you might like it. Hope this helps!
I just want to tag into this- I bought these a couple of weeks ago, they are small so easily concealed and have been an absolute game changer for me. I can bring them anywhere without getting stares from people, including meetings at work and have really helped me keep my hand busy during the day when I can’t be doing other hobby related things

It's a good starter kit for the price. Has everything you need to start out except for nail polish. I don't like the colors they have for acrylics, but it's cheap for everything you get and good for practice. The first time I did them they turned out horrible lol so if that happens don't be deterred. I'm getting better and faster every time I do them.
This video helped me a lot: https://youtu.be/pwrBgPm1At4
I found a fidget ring on Amazon that’s helped me tremendously. It’s been nice just to keep my hands busy so I don’t pick as much.
Have you tried an ingrown hair exfoliator? I get ingrown hairs wherever I shave and the. I end up picking my legs SO BAD. I’ve only this thing for like two weeks and my legs are healing. So are a bunch of other areas as I’ve been using it full body (and no more razor bumps)

bandaids are too sticky, gloves make my hands sweat, which makes the pick spots more obvious, which triggers to compulsion to pick. so definitely something breathable. maybe something like this box of rubber finger tips except made out of some sort of moisture wicking material, and covers the whole finger.
They are meant for arthritis pain, and intended to be worn frequently for a long time. They have copper infused to make them anti-bacterial, and they are machine washable :) They are usually fingerless, which would frankly defeat the whole purpose for me, so I found these ones on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015QNN0UW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I've had them for a week or two. All I need them for is to keep my finger tips covered throughout the day, and they are comfortable enough for me there - plus I work a desk job and play PC games for fun, so being able to feel my keyboard is pretty important. It slows down my typing, but I also usually type 120ish words per minute, so slowing down is reasonable.
No idea how they work as actual compression gloves - but they are perfect to make me stop picking, I wear them all the time unless I have a reason to take them off and it has helped me a lot :)
FOUND THEM!!! $10 on Amazon! Gel Finger Support Protector Gloves, Gel Finger Cots/Covers - Different Sizes Silicone Fingertips for Hands Cracking, Eczema Skin (20pcs) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07M5W7QCP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_H4V6TWEW9XQXD2Z34WZV?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Yes I bought these finger cots! They are very cheap made but they don't need to be fancy. They do the job. I wash then in a lingerie bag and they do fine.
I pick at my face (acne) and thighs (ingrown hairs) compulsively. What it it that you’re picking at on your back? Are these itchy blackheads or scars from picking at yourself? If blackhead/buildup that your picking at, you might like these (exfoliating wash clothes)[https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HRM2XSW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_VNBBA4Z3NZYZRXH0QNYC?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1]
For the face I recommend CosRx AC Collection acne patches over the mighty patch.
They have a curved shape so they will stay put on your skin and are also thin and infused with tea tree and Centella extract which reduces redness.
They are cheaper as far as I know and just way better, this is coming from someone who has a bad face picking problem along with MRSA and tried pretty much every patch under the sun.
Link here for Amazon (remember there are a lot of different patches from this brand but get this specific one bc it’s best):

These are great exfoliating cloths. Might help clear them up.
I use silicone sheets typically but I think gel would probably work better on lips. If you just google “scar silicone gel”, it’ll come up. I like ScarAway brand but I haven’t tried their gel. You can find it on Amazon and other places. It smooths scars and evens out pigmentation.
Don't buy the tiny circles, they suck and fall off really easily. Get these big sheets: https://www.amazon.com/Band-Aid-Waterproof-Adhesive-Bandages-Blisters/dp/B077TN7L3R (also available at Target, which is where I usually buy them) and cut them up into whatever size square you need.
Not OP, but I use something like these to keep me from picking. They’re hydrocolloid bandaids, or blister bandaids.
Also helps flatten the blemishes, if they’re close enough to the surface. Draws the gunk out.
Good luck!
My favorites are these from cosrx. But you can find the same thing from many other brands at most drugstores
