According to this calculator, shifting almost all of my beef consumption to chicken and fish saves over 2 tons of CO2 emissions every year. I thought it was going to be only 800 pounds.
Cut down on beef y'all.

Signal: The Instagram ads Facebook won't show you.
The encrypted messaging app had a creative ad idea: Show the data Facebook collects about users back to them. But when they found out, Facebook terminated Signal's ad account.

Sketchy program for dumping phone data announces they can now read data from the signal app. Signal gets ahold of the program, finds several exploits, and puts out an update. In the event this program ever tries to read Signal data, all shit will be appropriately fucked up.
I bought a pair of Columbia shoes and some Dr. Scholls insets and they're the best shoes I've ever owned, first pair where the heels didn't immediately start to degrade. Had them for 6 or 7 months now and they're still amazing.
Gonna get a face shield. Along with my glasses and face mask, I refuse to get covid at work
I'm filled with terror and rage. We are so close to a civil war or just a collapse of everything. I'm ordering a bunch of shelf stable food, just so I can be prepared for a long, hard 12 months ahead. I buying a wood burning stove and a super filter that can filter any fresh water on the ground, I'm getting enough seeds to plant a lot of vegetables this fall, winter & spring. I highly recommend you guys do something similar.
I know I sound like a crazy person, and I really hope I am being crazy and wrong about everything. But I don't see how this ends well.
If you don't do anything else, just buy the water filter, it's only 20 bucks and it filters 100, 000 gallons of water
In tonight's installment of "trivial things that annoy u/the_dummkopf," I'm annoyed I can no longer find curry-flavored instant couscous for sale at my grocery store. At this point, I'm going to have to start buying chopped vegetables and curry powder and start adding it to plain couscous. Either that or I'll have to buy it in bulk on Amazon.
Set theory and discrete mathematics in general is really cool, and it ended up being the most applicable branch of math for me in my CS program.
If you need to ever do Calculus, a former professor of mine wrote a great accessible handboook called Calculus for the forgetful which gives you a great intuitive feel for calculus

honestly, seems like the ideal way to get some cardio on a bike indoors, tho I'm sure film will still give me a hard time for it
/u/robinsanjiao did you know about this book? I know you're a lego guy and it looks really cool.
It has sections on each architectural style (like Art Deco, Brutalism, neoclassical revival, etc), what makes them unique, and then how to build them in lego. Seems like it could be fun!
I just finished and really enjoyed The Faithful Executioner: Life and Death, Honor and Shame in the Turbulent Sixteenth Century which is built on the journal of Franz Schmidt who was the master executioner for the city of Nuremburg for over 50 years. It has a lot to say on normal professional life, as well as crime, punishment and identity during that time. Really fascinating read
Can you hurt yourself by consuming too much antacid? I’ve been drinking a lot of this stuff lately and it certainly helps with my heartburn, but I wonder if you can go too far in the other direction.

God I love it when some academic somewhere has written a long ass book about an extremely pigeonholed interest of mine.
My pro tip for mask-wearing is get a roll of gentle paper tape used for gauze wrap, and tape the top of your mask to your face under your glasses. Using the tape to seal it to your face makes all the difference in the world as far as glasses fog goes
Bigger focus on ordinary people's lives - and just ordinary people other than the upper crust of the elite - has been a pretty big trend in modern academic history in the past couple decades, though I haven't read much of it myself there are probably a lot of books out there on it. One obscurer and more specific example would be this book which explores the lives of 12 people who lived along the Silk Road in the 1st millennium CE and is more intimate than the usual academic offering - most are fictitious (but realistic, at least based on current scholarship), but a few are actual persons, such as (if I recall correctly) a 10th century Chinese official and astronomer and how his life from birth to death might have been like. I also seem to recall a lot of books like that for current US history, particularly for minorities and other groups whose 'voices' are often not heard, but again can't recall any off the top of my head at the moment as it's not in my area of interests for academic history.

It's called Moonstruck. It's got magic and whatnot. I was not a fan but I think it was because I couldn't relate to the relationship and I found it to be too twee for my taste.
I think it was actually someone here who linked to it last week - I got one of these.
Oh I have a great idea
Imma get one of these and mount it on top of my monitor

Y'all should really listen to the Ezra Klein interview with Sean McElwee
I think you're going to find is a figure who is very sympathetic to our way of thinking, and he is someone who grounds his ideas in data rather than emotion. I think that anyone interested in left-leaning reform should pay attention to him.
The hate he gets from the centre-left is undeserved.
This might be my favorite besides Mr Sandman
It's pretty similar so far. The Witcher 3 had an aggregate score of 92, Cyberpunk has an aggregate score of 91.
Granted Cyberpunk is going to have a lot more reviews roll in so things can change, but the difference isn't massive. The Witcher really hit its stride a year or two after the game came out.
Yeah that'll do it. You gotta stay out of the sun, especially between ten and two.
I really like this. I throw it on before I go outside and it zips off. Sun hats really help too
I recommend this book.
It has an accessible skills-based approach with fully illustrated step-by-step recipes for each new concept.
I probably should have been more specific. book is kind of a melding of Freud and William James. Richard Beck is a progressive christian experimental psychologist. So it's not exactly a companion book in the academic meaning but it is interesting as long as you know going in the author is Christian and operating as such though he is also a good psychologist

Me too! Except I went with this shirt because I found it to be the most comfortable in my "try a plain t shirt from a few brands and then buy all of them from the one I find most comfortable" quest. The rest of my T shirts are from before I did this cuz they're not fully worn out yet, and then political T shirts.
Snagglepuss was one of the best books I've ever read. Snagglepuss reimagined as a Tennessee William's style playwright fighting against McCarthyism.

indeed! Brand is Amazon Basic Care
It's not like they're selling scheduled stuff, if it's otc drugs you can buy it on Amazon. I've never done it but at that price I'm gonna start. I usually buy it from Meijer, but the price difference is hilarious.
Today's book: My Bad. Written by my favorite comics writer Mark Russell (The Flintstones, Snagglepuss, The Wonder Twins) who is very adept at writing cultural critiques and subverse themes in comic form. My Bad is essentially his Watchmen, i.e. he wrote a different book using D.C. licensed characters but in order to go a little deeper he had to use characters of his own creation lest he tarnish their brand.
I use normal mouse traps so not dog safe but I like these because they're bloodless. What's most important is using peanut butter. Any hair that can be snatched isn't any good, they have to stand on the trigger to lick the peanut butter.

This is the one I have. I like it well enough. It's got Bluetooth so you can see real time speed, power, etc. The app also has preset workouts. You'll need the skewer and a stand for the front wheel too, check the 'bought together'
Kitty's absolute favoritest thing in the world is this blue feathery sparkler thing
We keep poking it out from under doors/ cabinets and now she is under the impression that a family of blue feathery sparkle things live under each door/cabinet. I'd be holding it in my hand in front of her and she still goes looking for it under furniture.
Anyone have any dual monitor stand/arm recommendations? I have one I've used before, but it's a wall mount and it's not adjustable, only stays flush to the wall.
So another wall mount might work, but would require my desk to always be facing into a wall. On the other hand it frees up the surface of the desk completely, and can't be knocked over unless it literally falls off the wall, which seems unlikely if I install it correctly.
I kind of like the idea of ones that clamp to the back of the desk, but I'm concerned about how stable those are, and whether the clamp would damage the desk.
Freestanding ones like this seem like the best solution, but that would take up more desk space and could theoretically be knocked over.
I can't stop thinking about this Partner who wore straight up grandpa suspenders to a pitch meeting. Alligator clips, bright red elastics, the whole deal. I think he pranked the whole room.
Honestly I bought a very, very cheap Chinese one.
It's pretty dumb (basically it just goes at random, the sensors are pretty crummy) but it gets the job done for my small NY apartment.
If you're looking for something closer to the irobots and nicer ones, but for a bargain, the brand Eufy is solid and will probably be what I upgrade to eventually.
It might. Do you know what model it is?
This is a good deal for a 2.5 inch. This is a good website for looking for other deals although be careful because some of the cheaper brands are kinda new and not known so idk if they’re any good. r/BuildAPCSales is also a good place to check
I think you would need to consider 3 things:
Reliability. I don't know if a Blu-ray has more reliability than your average external hard drive, but having to mess around with the physical discs (and prevent them from getting scratched) could be a pain. You can also get bad discs.
Read-write speed. The Blu-ray discs you linked are 6X, which can transfer 27 MB in a second, or a gigabyte in ~35 seconds. A USB 3.0 cable can transfer 640 MB in a second. (These are both maximum speeds, obviously actual speeds would be lower.) So a regular USB 3.0-connected external hard drive would be able to transfer a lot faster.
Convenience. That 100-pack spindle can fit 2.5 TB of data, and to transfer all that data you would need to physically insert and eject all 100 discs, and spend time burning each one (I'll assume you have some way to break the data up into discrete 25GB blocks that expects multiple discs, like those computer games that installed off of 3 CDs). You can buy a 4TB external hard drive for roughly twice the price of that spindle and only have to plug in once.
Final conclusion: go back in time to 2008 and spend an entire afternoon ripping your parents' CD collection into iTunes, realizing after 3 hours that you're not even halfway done. Then decide if that's your backup solution
...would backing up to Blu-Rays be a silly idea?
they're about $16/TB which is cheaper than most hard drives i think
my mother: eats a $30 breakfast
also my mother: lectures me on being spendthrift because i have 6x Italian-made glasses

Everyone in the replies is talking about cars and not the overall point, which is the mythologizing of the American frontier as a major force in our national identity. There’s a great book about this from a couple years ago. Worth checking out.
you can make good dinners with nothing more than a 30 dollar chefs knife. This one is surprisingly great. I've been using it for two years now and am just now seriously considering a whetstone to sharpen it.
there's a front page post talking about how you 'need' the whole kitchen to make good cheap quick dinners. You need one decent knife and some basic knife skills, and you can start churning out good dinners in about 30 minutes.
That snippet you posted says they worked 39.1 compared to 37.
this is good visualization from your link
Heres my contribution to the antiwork discussion:
Americans on average work more than other OECD countries
https://clockify.me/working-hours
>On average, a full-time employee in the European Union works 37.1 hours per week (main job). In 2019, the longest working hours are reported in Romania (40.5 hours per week) and Bulgaria (40.4 hours per week). The statistics also show that in Belgium, the number of working hours for employees was 39.1 hours per week, while it was 52.8 for self-employed.
>On average, a full-time employee in the United Stats works 1,801 hours per year, or 37.5 hours per week, which is more than other OECD countries.
>For example, Europeans work up to 19 percent fewer hours annually compared to those working in the US. For Americans that's 258 hours extra per year, or about an hour per working day.
I tried going to the gym while wearing this N95 and it was good. A paper mask was suffocating me because it was getting sucked onto my mouth, but these N95s don't have that problem, and are also obviously more effective. They're also the only N95s I've had that actually seal properly; the vertical-crease ones suck

Floating corner shelves might be nice but they might be too easy to hit your head on and if they’re too higher it could be inconvenient.
Maybe some floating shelves on the side wall but far enough away from the head area you’d avoid them. You might really only need one depending.
You can also maybe get something like this or this
People like those ikea skadis peg boards but idk if that fit what you’re trying to do
Also those hanging bed caddies might help as well
I'm actually looking to replace my crappy keyboard with a mechanical keyboard like this R$280 one
I hope you meant R$500 because I cannot imagine dropping 2,581.20 on a keyboard, that is unless it can play music too.
There are prob nicer ones but see the ridges around the light? That's all metal and could cause some serious damage
FWIW I only knew of 11 of these so I'm only a low level weeaboo
i'm finally reading a book recommened to me by my dearly missed ex regular thatnastywomen

The question now is which voter demographic they haven't angered yet. The inevitable tell-all book about this scandal can borrow its title from this: .https://www.amazon.ca/Ornament-Crime-Adolf-Loos-ebook/dp/B07K833WB5
Couple weeks ago I switched to an electric toothbrush. Today I discovered the world of alternate brush heads.
So many different types clip into my toothbrush, including off brands that are way cheaper.
But the best thing is that now I can have a brush head that's the proper length of a manual brush. I dunno why all the electrics have that tiny single one.
I mean, I do get why they have it, it's like the dentist's one, so you can get deep into the individual tooth and space between.
But I found this one which has both that little circle bit and a wide brush, which I think is much better for getting the sides of your teeth
Is this a trustworthy site? If so, this is bad
Thinking of replacing my bike's bell with this cute little horn so I can alert people who are taking up the sidewalk and hopefully alert drivers to my presence when they are making turns.
Client: Hello dressmaker. I have a cocktail party coming up. Can you make me look like a sexy circus tent?
Dressmaker: I got you
I just bought these and because it's gonna be chilly as far as I'm concerned tonight I've got some on under my pants, wore some over leggings with the new dress I wore yesterday for the same reason
Browsing Amazon cuz I wanted to know more about what Magic Spoon was and found this:
What y'all think of this dress and this dress
I have a motorcycle lock for mine, and I lock it up whenever I leave the house. Great for peace of mind
I can only speak for myself, but I think the reasons I object to him are fairly typical.
There are three basic reasons: policy, corruption, and bigotry.
On policy, Adams is a hard-liner conservative, particularly on criminal justice issues. He wants to bring back stop and frisk and increase school class sizes to four hundred students. He was a self-described conservative Republican in the nineties. Incongruously, he’s also a hardcore vegan who believes going vegan can cure cancer and has repeatedly used Borough hall to pick favorites in the market and privilege vegan businesses.
Secondly, Adams is really impressively corrupt. He’s repeatedly brushed off calls for reform to placard abuse and racked up dozens of citations himself. He’s repeatedly used Borough resources for his personal campaigns. He’s in deep with some extremely gross parts of the Brooklyn machine.
Lastly, Adams is a bigot. He’s attacked interracial marriage and is a longtime supporter of hate group leader Louis Farrakhan. He’s an avowed nativist and, strangely, also seems to be against real muslims (quoted as saying “I’m not an antisemite - I’m a Christian, not a Muslim”).
"pop socket" is what you're thinking of. I don't know how people live without them, although I personally prefer the ring-style stand holder
>Also on the list are books about abortion and homosexuality, such as “LGBT Families” by Leanne K. Curry-McGhee and Michael J. Basso’s “The Underground Guide to Teenage Sexuality: An Essential Handbook for Today’s Teens and Parents.”
>Krause's list also includes a book that was a hit with conservative readers, namely “Eyes on Target: Inside Stories from the Brotherhood of the U.S. Navy SEALs” by Scott McEwen and Richard Miniter.
!!!! Oh fuck that's exactly the same thing lol. I was wondering what the brand name product was tho is there a dark chocolate variety?
I want to buy some bone conduction headphones. Aftershokz look like the way to go cuz they seem to be around the longest l. There are some cheaper brands but they are Chinese and some seem rather fly-by-night. These look good but the "About Us" section on their website seem real sus.
Perhaps I'm overthinking it but I don't like to cheap out on things like this. It's my "measure twice, cut once".
> I'm also somewhat concerned about what the airports will be like in Georgia.
I've been in and out of airports a couple of times this year, and I've felt pretty good about the amount of masking I saw. If you get yourself a medical mask (i.e. KN95) and make sure it's sealed especially with something like paper tape you'll be pretty darn safe
