Definitely renegotiate. There's a huge thread on slickdeals that describes the process and what the current deals are:

This will work. Find some RG6 full copper cable (or copper clad cable if you're cheep like me) that suits your length.
Yellow red and white is standard definition. Get this cable
Yup. My understanding is that you have to have your DVR connected to the internet. Hit the dash button on your remote (Lower left) and it should tell you on your TV if it's connected or not.
Then, you can login to the app store and download the DirecTV app by DirecTV. You'll need to enter your username and password. If you don't have one, you'll need to go on the Directv website and set one up.
I use it all the time. If you are in the house, it will let you control your box. If you are out of the house, you can setup recordings and stream DirecTV channels. (You can't stream recordings from your DVR.)

Depends on your equipment.
If you have a Genie (Models: HR34, HR44, HR54 or HS17) and Clients (Models: C31,C41,C51,C61) then the answer is no, you cannot have separate recordings.
If the one in your room is an HDDVR (Models: HR20-HR24) then yes, you can have separate recordings. Buy one of these, and hook it up to the Sat In, on your receiver. This will ensure no recordings are seen by other TV's.
Get ExpressVPN, set your location as India, create an account with NFL game pass. India was the cheapest when I did this. $129 a season.
I actually installed expressvpnrouter on an old router and I have a wifi that thinks it’s in India. Then I got nvidia shield which connects to that WiFi.
So then it looks like this?
https://www.amazon.com/DIRECTV-SL3-SWM-SlimLine-Single-Multiswitch/dp/B003ZT28GC
How many coax ports are coming out of it? 4 like the picture in my first link, or 1 like the picture in this link?
You mentioned lower that it's an SL3.
https://www.amazon.com/KaKu-Slimline-Dish-Directv-Brand/dp/B006E89F62
This is an SL5. Is this what you mean by 4 wires though? 4 connections for coax cable? This would be a very strange installation for just a single HR44. Do you share this dish with other potential customers?
We haven't really decided. I do have good antenna coverage. I plan to just replace the dish and mount an outdoor RCA antenna right onto the existing satellite post on my roof and run it into the house over the existing coax. We also have the Hulu-Disney+ESPN+ streaming as well as HBO Max "Free" through the AT&T unlimited cell plan.

This is amazing information. Your description of QAM finally made something in my head click and now I understand why an older modulator of mine gave me problems. I also have 2 Element TVs and they did cause me a headache for that reason. Now I know why...
Were these the PVI brand you were talking about?

Can have them preinstall connector on just one end, if you need the other one unfinished to fish it through the hole.
If not, their connectors are really good.
Well, I didn't have that problem with my older DirecTV box. Don't have it any more, so I can't offer the model number. But, in any event, might be worth the try for a $20 outlay.
I used this Elgato: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00840353W/ref=pe_385040_30332200_pe_309540_26725410_item
It took crazy long to try to render a full movie on a middling laptop. Prohibitively long -- so I only ended up giving it one try. I wasted $155, but maybe you can waste only $20. Anyhow, copy protection wasn't the issue. It was the rendering.
Something like this should do it. What you're looking for is a catv amplifier. I would set it to the lowest gain and increase until the issues go away. Too hot of signal can actually damage the tv, but isn't too common.
While the length of cable to the unit could certainly be the problem, it's more likely the issue is a connection gone bad somewhere. Check that the connections in the room are tight, maybe even try a new coax jumper to the tv from the wall. Loose connections are the main cause of what you're seeing. The building really should be getting their DirecTV contractor company out to look at the issue if possible, but obviously covid might make that difficult.
No, not at all. Here's what they look like.
They block sharing of DVR'd programming, and block the action of telling the DVR to record things. I use them all time in MDU, which uses 1 dish to service multiple apartment buildings.
You'd hook it up at the dish. With an 22 tuner LNB, 1 line comes off the dish. Then to a 2 way splitter. Each leg gets a BSF.
Then each leg goes to an additional splitter that services each "house" if you need more than 1 receiver at each "house". If you only have 1 receiver on a leg, then you don't need an additional splitter
There's a dish heater you could get to install on it. I recommend putting the sticker on the back of the reflector though. If you put it on the front like the instructions it just fades after a few years and starts to peel. https://www.amazon.com/Hot-Shot-Heater-Satellite-Dish/dp/B0030TYX6K/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=directv+dish+heater+kit&qid=1606271372&sr=8-5
Is this av receiver any good for 4k upscaling?
It sounds like a weird miscommunication between the mini and the TV. I've seen this before, where you have to either reset the receiver or physically unplug the hdmi and plug it back in. I've had luck either switching the hdmi port it's plugged into or changing the configuration to component instead of hdmi (requires a 10-pin component cable, a proprietary cable for the genie system. You can probably get them to send you one, or find one on (Amazon)[https://www.amazon.com/TopOne-DirecTV-Component-Cable-10PINCOMPON/dp/B01BG84G36])
I accidentally posted this as a reply to a comment below, but this is what you need!
You need a swim splitter. It looks exactly like this, this is DirecTV selling them directly on amazon for about 5 bucks:
Directv Msplit2r1-03 Approved 2-way Wide Band SWM Splitter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BW6XDPU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_B2ZcCbAVYHEE2
There are a few standard splitters from electronics stores and such that will work but very few and who knows how well or long. Use this one and make sure if you have an HR-54(power inserter for dish built in) that your Genie is on the power port.
there was an app for commercial customers that allowed control of individual receivers

Someone in a device group just sent me this: Looks like a real contender https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07XG1HT7G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fab_sQgFFbQK0ETFG The cool thing with this one, It is both RF & IR. If it doesn't have your device, email them and usually the next day they have a code ready for you. Can control up to 15 devices I believe. No dongles to jack with either.
>for the additional TV. While I think we'll stay with DTV, I really don't want to get in any more contracts, and I'd love to not have a tech come out and place more wires if I don't need them.

>Which story is right? Also, if w
If you call in to add a wireless genie mini, likely you can get the $99 one time setup fee waived being that you are out of contract.
Another interesting option might be to purchase a wireless HDMI transmitter and plug your Genie box into it, and the other outside on your patio. If you wanted a mirrored setup and have both watching the same program, you can add a HDMI splitter into the mix. Best part about this, no extra DTV hardware and no contracts.
There is a solution to this. All H25's need this antenna to properly be paired with an RF remote. They don't have it built in.
Apple Lightning to Digital AV Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009WHV3BM
Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WF96FY5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_xQTvFbAWTH98H These are the two I was describing. I suggest only Apple and not Apple certified so it will work. Otherwise you can easily return Amazon if it doesn’t work. The USB-C works on newer IPad Pros and Mac and the other works on IPhone and IPads.
I think it will eventually lock you out of your recordings too. You really need one of those swim adapters to power the dish. It's built into the HR54, the HR44 needs a seperate one.
Maybe you can find one from someone else. They sell them on Amazon oddly enough, but for like $13. You can set up a service call and have a tech bring one for free better still.
https://www.amazon.com/Directv-Volt-Power-Inserter-Integrated/dp/B00ZDURM6W
Yes you can, I do it with my RV. You need a SWIM dish and box (links below). These will run you about $240 for both and then its an extra 7 bucks a month or the service. Dont bother with the automatic dish units because for DTV they are not HD compatible and the major buzz around is that in the near future they will be shutting down the standard satellites because they are coming to the end of their lifespans. Make sure you get enough cable to keep the dish out from under the trees. For dish pointing there are many satellite locator apps that are very useful, just find one you like.
This is the box I have... H24 Box
You can use a Hauppauge tv tuner (Example: http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/products/data_hdpvr2.html) but it will need to be connected to a computer which is what you record to (i.e. it doesn't have a physical hard drive like a DVR does). Advantage of this option is that it has an IR blaster so you can set it to record a specific show at a specific time and it will change the channel on the box to record that show.
Otherwise you could look at something like this that was would record to a USB drive or an external hard drive plugged into -> https://www.amazon.com/DIGITNOW-Capture-Converter-Recorder-Support/dp/B074FW63JJ/ref=sr_1_10?crid=3U1RXY66XMNEE&keywords=hd+recorder&qid=1566155844&s=gateway&sprefix=hd+recor%2Caps%2C147&sr=8-10. Main disadvantage is that you have to manually record the show, i.e. you need to be there to start the recording when the show is playing.
Not with my splitter, either tv would work regardless if the other was off. This is the splitter I used: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CUMJRLY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_4JF8Bb3DF8KNQ
For this particular splitter I don’t recall any specific instructions regarding what to turn off or unplug in what order. It probably wouldn’t hurt to turn off your sources while plugging in everything.
I have used this HDMI splitter for a couple of months to split the single from 1080p security cameras to two monitors and it works perfectly.
https://www.amazon.com/DVRdaddy-External-Expander-Recording-Capacity/dp/B013PUHUGI
Has anybody tried this 6TB DVRdaddy External DVR Hard Drive Expander For DirecTV ? I was wondering about this yesterday after I scheduled multiple 4K future recordings. But I don't need it just yet.
I hated it too, more specifically the location of the guide button. I never got used to it and kept randomly recording stuff. I bought this and am much happier.
I had the same problem with our Optoma projector after a power surge. This splitter/hub did the trick for me.
It's powered, and gets and stays hot, fwiw.
This article goes into all the details.
Buy this. Or call and request one, mine has been flawless since.
DIRECTV Broadband DECA Ethernet to Coax Adapter - Generation II (2 Pack) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZDUQVFU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_wfuezbJ6G6PBX
Yeah that's pretty annoying. I know I've tried unplugging the HDMI cable and plugging them back in. I've tried resetting the wireless mini. None of that helps and the only thing that works for sure is unplugging the TV. And it only happens on that one TV.
I don't know if your setup will allow it, but have you considered plugging your TV into something like a WeMo smart plug or wireless outlet? Then you could turn the TV off with your phone/a remote control and not have to deal with turning everything off at the breaker box.
In your opinion (or what difference would it make) to have the the wiring setup like I do, which is very much like your first diagram above, or just use the line feeding the genies and put a simple 1-to2 SWM spllitter?
Thinking of getting a few 3rd gen DECAs and some a few splitters to give that a try. Most likely will still use the power connection instead of USB as I've read the UBS is finicky if they work or not and already have power for them.
Are the 3rd gen versions the same except offering USB power option?
Use the coax wiring in your house to let the DirecTV main HD-DVR/Genie talk to the Genie Clients, Don't use Ethernet at all to directly plug into a DVR or client - have ONE broadband adapter coming off your DirecTV termination point be your connection to Ethernet example: https://www.amazon.com/DIRECTV-Broadband-Ethernet-DECABB1MR0-Generation/dp/B004HAOWLW - plug into one of the open boards the broadband adapter - the entire network on the DirecTV coax side should then get Internet access for on demand
Hi, just to make sure would this cable work: http://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-104057-3-Feet-Coaxial-Connector/dp/B008P5P96M/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1448136268&sr=8-9&keywords=rg6+coax+3+feet
I wasn't aware different cables existed. Don't want to try my c31 box. Thanks again
If the problem is with HDCP, passing the HDMI through this box will likely fix it:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00J4D3RTU
That box provides a constant HDCP handshake to the receiver, and requires none going out.
Note that this only passes two channel audio. They have another model that does 5 channel. Or connect the genie to the receiver via optical.
Service calls are usually $40.
However, we might be able to fix this without one. You obviously don't have a SWM dish if you have 4 lines coming out of it. Most likely you just have a slimline 3-lnb.
That would work fine going into a 4x8 splitter as long as it is rated for wideband. (Some of the first generation splitters were not wideband, and have trouble with HD channels.)
This is what you actually need:
You connect the four lines from the dish into this, then you have up to 8 lines out.
Make sure your receivers are setup to a dish type of slimline-3 (It should be #3 on the list) and make sure the switch type says "multiswitch" and you should be good to go.
>I wouldn't mind using component, but the mini I have only has HDMI. There are no component connections. What's the resolution in that case?
If the culprit really is problems with your HDCP signal, putting one of these between the box and the TV will ensure that the box is receiving a constant HDCP handshake from the splitter. See lots of user reviews like this one. Note that these only seem to carry 2 channel audio.
You could always go with an HDMI splitter
That's not true, all this person needs to do is run their signal through this.
The splitter provides an HDCP handshake to the input regardless of what is connected to the output ports.
Well MicroCow I think you were right. The tech just left, and his determination was that...
1) The mini itself was fried. Not just that, the HDMI port it was plugged into on the TV was gone as well. When I tested that last night, I just tested the second HDMI port using my bluray player and I guess I didn't test the one the mini was plugged in to. Sure enough though, that TV port was dead.
2) He said the HDMI port on the DVR appeared to be fried as well. He couldn't get anything from it with his testing...whatever he did.
So we ended up replacing the mini and I opted to keep the DVR and just continue using component cables. Way too much stuff recorded and series recordings set up to go thru all that again. The wife said we did have a storm that came thru yesterday but the power never went off and she didn't notice the lights flicker, but maybe that was enough? Even though I have them both on APC UPSes I guess they can't stop everything. Still, seems crazy to me if they are that sensitive. Maybe I'm just unlucky?
I think I am going to go ahead and order that cable you mentioned. I believe it's this one?? At least that way if my other port goes out where I have the mini connected I can at least use that.
Anyway, thanks everyone for the replies!
This hdmi splitter seems to have good reviews. I've used a cheap no name one with my genie before, worked fine, but I can't find it anywhere. From that you would just run an hdmi cable between one of the outputs and the tv on the patio.
If your living room is close enough to the patio you might be able to use an RF remote with it as well.
> (note you will also have to run L/R audio (white, red) as well.
I think component is going to be the easiest way to go. I tested it out just with the 2 tvs next to each other because I haven't gotten long enough cables yet.
I learned what you said, that I also needed the yellow and white cables to get the audio to work.
I went ahead and ordered this cable. It says it handles audio and video. Will that work for me, or do I need to order a longer white/yellow audio cable as well?
Short answer, probably not.
Long answer, they would have had to update your system to a SWM system to be able to install a Genie. The Genie won't work on the old, multi-line system. I am 99% sure that they old Samsung TIVO's will NOT work on a SWM system.
You might be able to get a non SWM LNB and switch it out for the one currently on your dish. You would need two lines from your dish to your DVR. You would setup the DVR as a 18" round dish. It wouldn't get local channels or anything in HD.
Are you getting rid of the new boxes entirely? You said something about them offering you an SD box? I thought I read something about DirecTV not offering SD boxes anymore. The H25 (the newest HD non-recording box) will not work on anything but a SWM system.
Did a neighbor change their WiFi channels to one on top of yours? I use WiFi Analyzer to see what's what in my area for WiFi channels. I thought the HR44 didn't see 5Ghz WiFi?
Did an update break your box so it can't use your old HDMI cable? I've had handshake issues on cables that shouldn't have issues but the handshake was fixed with a newer cable. Don't ask me, I just watch TV here! ;)
