I ordered an ugly stik elite spinning rod on sale for cyber monday for $35 and ended up getting a duckett ghost XL extra heavy casting rod worth $109. Usually I wouldn't be too thrilled about getting the wrong order but I think this time I'll let it slide.
Read the book Knowing bass
This article does not really prove its point...fish will feel sensations and those sensations may cause them stress but they cannot perceive pain because they don't have pain receptors. The people in the cited article are just anthromorphising fish to human experience. Fish are simply just physiologically different then humans.
Classic Accessories Togiak I have same one and love it! Also yes
Classic Accessories Togiak Inflatable Fishing Float Tube With Backpack Straps
Looks like Nerocila phaiopleura or a related species.
Random fact: Hybrids between the two exist.
Considering the body shape(and color), looks like a blue catfish.
It's surprisingly cheap to charter a sturgeon boat in the Chilliwack area. There is usually a company with a half day charter for a couple hundred dollars.
https://www.groupon.com/local/vancouver-bc/fishing
If you don't feel like winching one in, you could get up early and watch them breach around dawn. Watching a 500-1000lb fish jump a body length or two into the air is seriously impressive, and they do it often near Island 22.
You might be talking about moray eels. Those ones have a secondary jaw that pulls in prey. They cooperate with groupers to hunt fish.
About electric “eels”, they’re not actually eels. They’re Gymnotiformes/Neotropical knifefish, and are more closely related to catfish(Siluriformes) than they are to eels(Anguilliformes).
Looks like a: Storm Original Hot 'N Tot 07 in “Hot Tiger” color. Amazon has them...
https://www.amazon.com/Storm-Original-Hot-Fishing-Lure/dp/B012BLXMKU
Edit: Bass Pro Shops has them as well (SKU: 1026941) for $7.99.
For learning about the different types of lures this is a good video
www.bassresource.com has lots of great beginners guides for fishing, how to tie certain knots, etc.
You are going to want to get fishing line (for that rod I would reccomend 8lb test monofilament, it will be the most versatile and cost- effective)
Fishing from a boat is a little more different than fishing from the shoreline since you will be exposed to more than one type of condition. For instance, you could go from fishing over grass beds to fishing over rocks, to fishing docks etc. The tackle is going to be pretty much the same, the only thing vastly different would be the boat equipment which I am assuming your friend provides.
Stay at fishing once you start and don't give up, even if you aren't catching anything. A bad day fishing is better than good day at work.
I would recommend something like a Ugly Stik Elite or Ugly Stik GX2. It will of course need to be a spinning rod (no trigger looking piece) to work with your reel. I like a 7' rod for all around fishing, and for a 4000 size reel I would recommend a medium or medium heavy power rod... medium if you fish more with smaller lures, medium heavy for larger lures. You can find both those in most stores, and they will cost between 30-50 bucks depending on what is on sale and the stores price level in general. If you have Amazon prime and are in the US you can get the 2 piece medium power Elite for $42 bucks with free shipping right now.
Yea holy shit dude. I didn't even notice it until this review. Prior to that I thought most of it was just about the insane "by the inch" they charge you to keep your fish.
I'm not sure how legal that is. Both overstocking the pond and not feeding the fish and the ridiculous cost to "keep" your fish.
Do you know what county this is in? I have multiple contact emails for the WI DNR, including the Head Admin and Head Warden, I also have contact info for my local fisheries dept personnel. I am definitely tempted to look into this.
Please PM me / look for my PM, because I want to ask you more about this and some other things.
I use Snapseed by Google on Android. It's an amazing app that I use for all my mobile photo editing. The filter is called HDR Scape. Link
My adrenaline was pumping because this was my first bigger bass fishing from shore by myself. I wasn't thinking at all to step back from the shore haha. I'm going to be extremely careful from now on.
There are far too many myths and old wives tales surrounding cast iron skillets. If you properly seasoned or purchased a pre-seasoned pan, you can use soap in it without issue because the pan has no oil to wash away because it turns into a plastic-like polymer that's very difficult to remove.
For stuck on grime, put 1/2" of water in the pan with a dot of soap and boil it for a minute or two to loosen the material. Use a soapy cloth to remove anything remaining once the pot cools enough to touch. I don't believe anyone that says to just wipe out the pot and add a touch of oil. Doing that will make everything that is cooked in that pan taste charred with hints of old oil. Baking in a pan that's treated that way would be absolutely disgusting.
My favorite cast iron pan has been washed as I've described above dozens of times and the coating on it is still perfect without needing to re-season.
Edit: Some proof.
im going to try those out. Just in case you wanted to give it a shot this is what i used and caught my 2.5 pounder last week.
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Berkley-1307655-PowerBait-Swim-Shad-3-inch-Firetiger/34873384
You should study these two maps, and determine the proper structure to fish from in your vicinity. Look for points, quick dropoffs, etc good structure where fish will be. If there is some added cover nearby (sunken tree, rockpile, etc) even better.
Lmao perfect timing for your post u/DeBaBas. Thanks for the recommendation u/Sandy_Nurse. Check out my video for 2 easy to use rigs when fishing in the salt water, the bobber rig is the one I would recommend you to use. As for a rod and reel, wallmart is the best bet for you. Get yourself 2 light or medium action black beauties, 9 feet would be perfect. For the reel get yourself anything small and aim for somthing above 25$ and you will be set. There is a good amazon deal on this reel, which I have used and is a legit reel for beginners.
You will need fishing line, this is what I would get if I was you, make sure you get the 8 or 10 pound test option, as the rig I have outlined is for smaller easy to catch fish.
Watch my video and hit up wall-mart for all the other things you will need like the bobber, hooks, swivels, and the like. After buying everything it should only cost ~$50.
If you are unfamiliar with fishing I would also recommend watching some of the other videos as well, as there is viable information in them that can help out no matter where you are fishing.
Hit me up if you have any questions and I would be happy to help you with any details!
A hui hou!
I hope that by "lost her tackle box" you don't mean she lost all the tackle inside it as well... That's just about the worst thing that can happen to an angler.
Anyway, as for recommendations, I use this bag from Plano. There's also a smaller one (3500 series), and they both offer the comfort of over-the-shoulder carry and the convenience of removable storage boxes. I've had mine for several months now and I love it! You can always look through the hunting and fishing section of Amazon.
As for finding a spot, google it! There's bound to be forums all over the place, and you can always fall back on Google Maps to spot lakes from the sky. Good luck!
Thanks man!
I hooked one a few days before I caught this one and I swear it had to be twice the size. It almost completely emptied my reel just stripping drag nonstop before it straightened my hooks out and got off. I maybe had 25 yards of line left reel when it got off. I was sick about it for days, but then I was hooked on catching these bad boys.
I caught it on one of these.
But my father in law also has a lot of luck using some jointed bomber minnows.
I actually caught my second one on a huge 7 inch saltwater grade baby striper bomber that I ordered on Amazon by mistake (thought it was the smaller version). The fish was a little smaller than this one though.
They have it available on Amazon. Should be able to get it shipped across the pond.

I buy blank lures off amazon (15 bucks for 20 or so) and I have a cheap compressor and airbrush that I use. I get my paint from craft stores so nothing special there. I connected my pump to a 5 gallon air tank so my pump isnt running all the time and I used a plastic bin with a cheap bathroom vent fan to exhaust fumes for my spray booth. All in all in equipment I have $200 bucks into it. Lures, hooks, and split rings are found on amazon and I have about 50-60 bucks into that.
I could buy a lot of lure for that price but I find it fun to mess with designs and make lure for my brother.
Link to airbrush kit I have :
I've caught carp similar to that here haha, strange coincidence.
Look at all the definitions here:
http://www.dictionary.com/browse/fishing
The first few refer to catching fish. The other refer to attempting to catch fish. It's semantics and he's only using the most strict definition. The dictionary (and the entire rest of the world) defines it more loosely.
This helped me navigate google better for my own research. Couldn't find the original but I saved it when it was posted a while back.
edit http://scholar.google.com <- Concentrate your searches there.
Costco (believe it or not) sells a real nice pontoon boat at a great price. Perfect for fly fishing, you can even mount a trolling motor.
I'm not sure what food prices are like where he is in Alaska, but prices like this in Northern Canada might convince you that subsistence fishing is a viable option.

The conflict is basically a better version battle II. It just has 2 extra bearings, balanced rotor, and color scheme.
I bought the 6000 2 weeks ago and love it. Tempted to order another.
A buddy of mine moved to Aurora a few years ago.. he brought a kayak with him. It has gotten wet only a few time in 5 years. Very few bodies of water around there, at least compared to where we are from.. Fishing around there is pretty fly-fishing centric, for trout. I'm not sure what their season is out there. The South Platte is right there, there are a few creeks around that might warrant a visit. There are a few water reservoirs around Denver that think you can fish at, but depending on how the weather has been they could be pretty low.
(i guess i have to take some of that back, i just peeked at the map and i see lakes that are news to me)
Personally I'd suggest you find a good hike, head over to devil's head lookout - it isn't too far and is quite an epic view. Probably cheaper than an out of state fishing license too.
SPOTS: I like to go here with my waders. You can walk all the way out to the island and farther with chest waders. Also, if you fish from the bank, this is a good place to park. You can fish right off the causeway. I walk down to where the boats go under West of the parking area.
BAIT: Pretty much anything will catch something. For some reason I've had some luck using jointed and non-jointed jerk baits. Even just minnows and worms on like a 6 hook will work fine.
Here are 4 libraries in the World Cat Online Library Catalogue that have it - perhaps you could ask the check out history and if the book has been unused for a while offering a donation to the library for the book.
Actually, OP's photo is a true pickerel, and using that name for walleye is a regional misnomer. Pickerel is genus "Esox," by definition. The more you know.
I think this sums you up nicely.
actually... maybe this one.
Honestly I bought a cheapy pair off amazon that have served me just fine. I compared to my buddies 100$ pair of some random brand and I couldn't tell a difference. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00MHG4PBK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Only complaint is that they feel a little tight on the top of my ears but that could just be me. For 25$ I could care less if I drop them, and they work.
Well i think that most people would tell you the same thing I will. Get the Penn Battle 2. It's widely accepted as one of the best saltwater spinning reels and is available for as low as $70 on Amazon.
Penn Battle II Spinning Reel, 4000 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LDYJ7CO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_.qJqybKRAJNFW
I would probably go with the 4000 or 5000 size depending on what line weight and type you are using. (Braid, monofilament). If you plan on ever using it for bigger fish or offshore fishing then maybe go for the 6000. Hope that helps. If you have any question let me know.
You can buy kits on Amazon for as little as $20. I wouldn't recommend it though.
For trout and catfish all you really need is hooks and sinkers to start. Get a spinner case of each, that will get you started. Buy some worms or livers and fish.
Then pick up some artificial lures as you find ones you like or as you target specific species in specific seasons.
If you want to spend a little and get some variety look at this

But don't expect quality or anything to last very long. Good luck!
I pretty much use a version of this rod for almost everything
https://www.amazon.com/St-Croix-Premier-Spinning-PS70MHF/dp/B000BNMXKQ
(note: dont buy it on amazon).
Its about the best all around rod that can also serve as a cranking rod.
Besides that rod, i carry a slightly lighter meduim shakespere inshore select rod and a berkley lightning m or mh.
All with 4000 reels and a variety of line (mostly braid or 12-15 lb mono, with a flouro baitcaster thrown in maybe).
Mostly a 7'0 M or MH rod will do everything. The st croix i like because its got the best action to power ive seen and is the most versatile (and most expensive).
These are normally $36 on amazon with free shipping. Although they are pretty decent reels for the money I would recommend you spend the extra money and get a higher quality reel, especially if you are a beginner, as it will make learning to cast accurately and smoothly much easier.
I searched extendable pole on amazon and I found this mop pole for $12.95 https://www.amazon.com/CleanAide-Adjustable-Extendable-Aluminum-Inches/dp/B01N4X7NA8/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1524802941&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=extendable+pole&dpPl=1&dpID=31w47GGg4IL&ref=plSrch Or I also found a 5 foot extendable hand held flag pole for $7.95 https://www.amazon.com/Telescopic-Handheld-Flagpoles-ANLEY-Portable/dp/B075M95Z54/ref=mp_s_a_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1524803078&sr=8-11&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=extendable+pole
So you can use the rig like I linked above or some people prefer to use a Knocker Rig. I have never personally used one in saltwater so can't speak to it. Have a plan for how to get a fish up to you should you land a new one... you could use a net or something like this and some long rope attached.
Think about some type of cart to carry. You may have more than one rod, a cooler, and just random crap. Go to amazon and type in fishing cart to see what I mean. By no means for you need to drop $100 on something but it can give you an idea.
Do you have your rod/reel and line all ready to go?
I built a couple following the advice of this thread. It was very easy and cost about $80. I prefer white led lights over the green. Also, I didn't use the trigger button.
You can also buy one on Amazon
Interesting! I think I wanna try that bait next time. And for the rig
https://youtu.be/YqjpTeUeCW0 start at 3:25. If you wanna do the first part of the video you can. But at that point I rather just buy a 4 pack of 'method feeder' on Amazon

is it aluminum body or carbon fiber if its an alloy get some jbweld, i used it to weld fittings to 2 stroke rc car mufflers that had high temps and it held grate

apparently there marine weld is good for composites
Someone sounds like they have been reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance... But one thing you must remember is that locals always have great tips for fishing. Don't be afraid to ask around.
Hi. I didn't give you full name because it shows up as Barometer+ on my phone. It's Barometer Altimeter DashClock on Google Play.
Edit: you can change the update frequency, but I think accuracy will depend on the sensor in your device.
Take a look at here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.precisiontrollingdata.precisiontrollingdata&hl=en
it seems to be a app for the same book. I don`t know how much it costs, but surely is cheaper than book
Looks like an Australoheros sanguineus. Are you in southern Brazil?
There weren't any muskies up there. We were pretty far north. But I did manage to get a 37 inch northern while trolling for walleyes.
Chironomids. They are present in almost every body of stillwater and trout love them. Take a size 12-16 hook, wrap it in black thread with a strand of white thread underneath, build a little head, then wrap a spiral of white thread up the hook to the head. Kinda like this - http://www.flyfishersrepublic.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/iccs11.jpg -. Helps if you have tools to tie flies, but you can fudge that pattern pretty easy. Fish it under a bobber, or cast it on a fly rod and retrieve it dead slowly. I caught this beauty - http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=6y1a1h&s=8#.VQzk80b3bCQ - on a size 18 chironomid pattern.
ice picks in action. basically you want them over the neck because anywhere else the tether would get in the way of pulling yourself up

100 ISO, 1/100th shutter speed. I'm not sure about the F-stop, the fish-eye lens I used is manual. Probably F3.5 if I was to guess. If you want to see the smoke in motion, I shot a timelapse of the fires while I was in colorado. You can see it on my vimeo page.
The photo that I took of my brother and the fire was taken right after I shot the clip at 3:01 in the video.
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Shakespeare-Tiger-7-0-2-Piece-Spinning-Combo/33588644 is a great beginner fishing rod and reel combo. Also get some saltwater eagle claw fishing hooks as well as some 1 or 2 oz weights. (Weights should be in small yellow and clear packs close to the hooks) Also parking is free at Oceanside pier after 6pm on metered spots.
Edit: Btw forgot to mention in case you didn't know that fishing permits aren't required on piers here.
Using a combo of the Ugly Stick in-shore spinning rod and the Penn SSV4500.
2 seconds on google got me this:
Using things like TripAdvisor can be useful, but remember that only you know where you want to go, what kind of fishing you want to do, and what you'd be willing to spend.
For what it's worth, the Pacific side of Costa Rica is world renowned for being one of the best places to target yellowfin tuna busting on the surface. Doing that trip with light spinning and fly gear is on my bucket list. Stuff like this:
http://www.sportfishingmag.com/travel/centralsouth-america/video-yellowfin-tuna-blitz-costa-rica
There's a bunch of good fly fishing ones on Vimeo, I can type in something like "trout fishing" and kill an hour haha. this is a cool one of fish taking flies off the surface
I haven't but I just ordered this one.
And while I was at it grabbed one of these:
Perfect for a motorcycle ride to the beach.
Here's a pic of some of my favorites:
For bass, I like to use lizards. Zoom makes them in all colors. My favorite two colors are moccasin blue (top right in the picture) and green pumpkin. That little shad at the bottom right has brought me luck from time-to-time as well.
For white perch (aka crappie), i either like to use jigs like the two in the top left of the pic (lots of different colors) or ones like the twirl-tail in the bottom left.
That white twirl-tail has caught plenty of bream for me too.
The speckles aren't dense enough- they're mostly connected on pure black crappie. White crappie and hybrids have open patches of pale scales showing. It has 7 spines in the dorsal fin, like most hybrids. And it seems to have very faint bars along it's back.
Plus it has the more elongated shape of a white, and it's just thick as hell. And hybrids are known to get massive.
It happens a lot in ponds with both strains- limited spawning habitat leads to overlap.

Off the Daytona, FL coast. Went out with Triple Header Off Shore Sport Fishing It cost a little bit, but was well worth it. It was my first charter, so I dont have any to compare it to, but I would highly recommend them to anyone in the area looking for one.
Put the rod into your car tip first from the front passenger door. Guide the tip between the two front seats and over the back seat. The handle should be in the front passenger footwell, pretty snug up against the firewall/center console, but there should be plenty of space for it.
This rod is pretty friggin sweet, but the reel is sorta crap. You can get a fairly nice reel for $30-40, though. I got a pflueger trion to put on mine, and it's great.
I prefer a shorter oyster knife but this design is pretty much solid. The wooden handled ones though tend to rust easier. The sani safe ones are super.
http://www.everytrail.com/guide/five-lakes-granite-chief-wilderness-lake-tahoe/map
Great fishing on 5 Lakes creek from buckskin creek back up to the 5 lakes. You can hike in from Greyhorse valley if you know where your going. ( trail not maintained) or you can get into 5 lakes from Barker Pass Road. Good trail, but long hike uphill at the end of the day. Easiest way is from the Alpine Meadows trailhead.
It was caught in some backwater off the Columbia River in Washington using worms. I did not think they were freshwater fish.
Edit: The nearest brackish water is a good hours drive away. Here is a link to the general area where I was fishing. Google Maps
I've always had great luck with net traps off of docks and piers. Just tie a chicken leg to the bottom and pull up every 15 minutes or so.
braid or fluorocarbon I use palomar..monfilament I use a cinch...sure I read it somewhere and it works well..I also use a similar tool as this:
mine is brass and at least 30 years old...I use it for cinches and its great in cold weather when the fingers are stiff.

Where I fish it's law to have a fish descender on your main line so if it's not a legal retention size you can safely get it back down to the proper depth they can be found on Amazon. They work really well.
I've been holding a single hook up against the trebles to where the bend matches shape then going one or two sizes up. Hook type so far have just been inline single hooks like these https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07XY1VT49/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07XY1VT49/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This is the kit I grabbed for mine. Keep checking it for when the black nickel ones are available. They're solid hooks
This is Piscifun backpack. But this is a common design many brands uses.
Note the trays that comes with it is not the best.
its pretty shit but at least my combo, the reel handle unscrews but doesn't allow the ability to fold (but i dunno about eagle claw), so i swapped it out with a reel from another combo rod I had lying around. I mean, it hasn't blown up or catastrophically failed, but its pretty garbage if thats what you're referring to. But I will say, the prespooled line has really low line memory for which was surprising to say the least for zebco.
I'm still looking for an ultralight reel to pair with the rod, like a 500 or 1000 size travel reel that has a folding handle, I found a daiwa that will pair well with the rod, just waiting for a more reasonable price. Pretty much just trying to find the smallest reel I can find for the rod.
You can still buy the rod separately rather than buy the combo, but then you wont have a spiffy mini tacklecase to go along with it :D Also, I think the rod separately is like the same price as the combo but is slightly longer??(5'6" vs 6') up to you, I like the 5.5foot, its just short enough that I don't get caught up in the vegetation as often
Just check out Amazon and or the big stores like Basspro (expensive) or Academy. Think about what you want and where you will be going. Do you need it to be lighter due to long distances? Does it need to be mesh for more ventilation because it is hot as hell where you are? Do you need more storage for larger items or are you just fly fishing? Will you be hooking up things like a waterproof box to put your car keys and phone in? If so where? Will you need a large back pocket to carry water and a snack or fish perhaps?
I have one like this and it works great on my creek fishing trips.
Also think about if you are going to keep fish and how you will do so.
Just a cheap Amazon chest mount. This was my first time with it. Jury is still out on if I'll stick with it or not.
Don't know how to link on mobile, but it's this one:

Amazon gives a lot of reel gear options, which would you recommend?
You can find plenty of them on Amazon for ~$30. I actually just got one for Xmas.

Here is a great app to fine some where to fish in that area. You should be able to catch trout with the gear you have just grab you some worms. There is also plenty of large and smallmouth bass and black and white crappie
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cpw.fishing_atlas
although i dont own that reel, i have a few that size range. i have never loaded them with 6lb mono, it just seemed too bulky to me. yeah they are rated for 10lb mono, but the fish i am hunting for (perch and trout) with that rod/reel dont need 6lb or 10lb mono... they dont strike that hard that i need the shock factor of mono.
i spool with 4lb flouro and it allows for good fishing. i also find that the Stren Flouro has good shock strike factor for the bigger trout. i did not have good luck with the berkley stuff, but it may have also been old line when i bought it.
the smaller reel will make you happy, it really will... my 5'6" light action with a tiny Pfluger President is my true love when it comes to fishing. it is so light, i can control the light line so much nicer, makes fishing pan fish easy, and a switch to trout fast and efficient, seeing as it is just a lure switch and not a line switch.
I've got my eye on this one. before I left for the Navy I had this bag full and about $5k between the contents of that bag and my rods and reels. It was my absolute favorite ever. It all got stolen from my mom's garage while I was in boot camp. But I just lost my job and I'm flat broke so it's on hold. But I was so pumped when I found it on Amazon the other day.
Well, I guess that's somewhat relative. I'd like to get away for a hundred bucks for the rod & reel if possible, but versatility would really increase my budget.
One thing I really liked about the idea of the KastKing baitfeeder was using it for catfishing also with the drag off. But I'm really open to any suggestions.
I've had one of these for well over 10 years, and I love it. They will handle just about anything, and the sheath threads right on to your belt, so it's right there when you need it.
I ended up purchasing a different popping cork than Alameda... https://www.amazon.com/ALAMEDA-POPPING-Texas-Tackle-Factory/dp/B01AKEE1QY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1543359272&sr=8-1&keywords=alameda+popping
The St Croix Avid 62 M/XF is the best jerking/popping/walking rod I have ever laid hands on. The tip is *perfect* for those styles of retrieves and it's short enough that I can work it from most any angle seated in a yak or standing on the bank. I think the MSRP is like $200 but they pop up for less pretty often. St Croix is usually excluded from most BF sales due to MAP rules but I believe that a lot of the big online places will give you the discount if you call before you order.
When I see these posts, I always suggest this. It can easily cut just about any kind of line cleanly. The price is not a lot for it. I always clip it on my belt loop when out fishing. I have purchased a few of them for friends of mine that fish and they love it too. It is a great tool to have on you.
Penn has been good to me, also a friend has https://www.amazon.com/Okuma-ABF80b-Avenger-Baitfeeder-Reels/dp/B00LDYL1R8/ref=mp_s_a_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1533522474&sr=8-17&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=penn%2Bpursuit&th=1&psc=1 and loves it but I haven’t tried it. Not sure about others but I would stay away from Shakespeare. I did have one of their spinning reels that was given to me and it worked well for a while until the anti backfeed clutch went out and regardless of switch position it would run either way at the handle.
I like quantum hot sauce oil and [penn grease[(https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005C4V3LY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_RLJzBbE438AB4). I've had both for about 15 years. They'll last forever. In regards to the oil, there may now be better synthetics available, I'm not sure.
I did a light cleaning every one to two years.
For topwaters like a super spook I use a2/0 or 3/0. For a smaller lure a 1/0 or 2/0. On some I have a size a smaller on the back. I have the first hook pointing back and the rear facing down. Others do it opposite. Do what works best for you. Also find hooks that are straight, not offset, like these
My ultralight setup is a little bulky for bringing on an elk hunt. I use a daiwa 7' two piece Laguna ultralight rod that I carry in a hard fly rod case with a daiwa crossfire 2000-3bi reel and I love them both. You're probably looking for more of a travel rod that will break down for a pack, I'd check out the 6'6" model https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FPQTOEM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_T3LwBb49AC324
I appreciate your extremely detailed post, and I really thank the people above for the clarification. It's what I was looking for! I'll be sure to pick up some of those nuggets and I was looking at all of the fake bait you were suggesting along with some others. However...
These are my hooks;
When I got those, they seemed large, but on the pictures online they seemed super small. Do you think these hooks are too big? And is there any specific colors that truly matter to a trout for the nuggets?
I have a bunch of fillet knives. I always take my Dexter with me. It holds an edge well and is very well balanced.
And if you're ordering a knife, also get a fillet glove

Something like that will work great for fish with small mouths like bluegill and trout, but are stout enough for big ol' bass and cats. Plus since they lock at the handles, I can just clamp em onto my clothes somewhere so they are easy to get at!
edit: woops had the wrong link in there. Basically 7" hemostats/forceps -- a bit heavier than your average little guys
Dude I got a Daiwa travel rod--microlight that fits in a real small case. I routinely take it with me to school and keep it under the seat of my car. It has a little built in tackle box for a few lures and with a little creativity, you can easily make more tackle room within the case. Only about 40 bucks. https://www.amazon.com/Daiwa-System-Minispin-Ultralight-Spinning/dp/B0000BY56T/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1524530392&sr=8-1&keywords=daiwa+minispin
