You can get a decent VR HMD for around 250-300 dollars right now used. VR isn't super expensive like it was 3 years ago.

A few points of interest:
Black Mesa Inbound (the tram ride) begins in the bottom-left corner. It's amazing how much space that five-minute segment takes up.
The Anti-Mass Spectrometer is the little yellow cylinder around the middle of the image.
On the lower right part of the image, you can see the back of the Sector G Dam, with the rest of the canyon above it.
To the left of the dam, you can see the blue hallways and lobby of the "Questionable Ethics" chapter.
Below the dam, you can see the Lambda Core chapter. The actual reactor is the long yellow chamber behind the corridors.
In the top left corner, you can see a "grid" of tunnels. These are the rails in "On a Rail".
Edit: Source, and some more angles of this here.
Well glad I'm not alone in my desire to see "Peaceful-Life", but maybe not so gloomy and depressing and more about actual scientific work. But anyway there is one "boring" mod exactly about Freeman's working routine - Half-Life: Induction
For anyone that wants to try this version out, here you go.
the old EA?
Meanwhile on EA Origin you do not pay a cent on preorders [aside from temporary card verification] until the game is launched and can cancel any time with a single button click
and you can actually refund your digital purchases hassle-free
I would like to see gamers pressure valve for these methods on steam. At the very least a much easier way of refunding.
No, he wasn't. Eli is the only character in Half-Life 2 to retroactively be identified as an individual seen in the original Half-Life.
Laidlaw has plainly stated that Kleiner does not appear in Half-Life. His exact words: > The best effect of continuity, from my point of view, has been the ability to take named but unused figures like Gordon’s mentor, Dr. Kleiner, and the nameless "Administrator," and turn them into full-blown characters. Kleiner, for instance, was everywhere and nowhere in the first game. As you pointed out, he was in the manual, and he was present (though not named) in and around the Test Chamber.
The only attempt to put Kleiner as a visible character in the original Half-Life was by Gearbox in Half-Life: Decay. They initially wanted to use his him for the person of Dr. Keller, but Laidlaw rejected this idea as he wanted to save him for later use.
Half-Life 1 and the Blue-Shift expansion:
Download the Xash3D engine from the App Store. The Xash3D app is an engine used to run Half-Life, not a emulator. This means that you can play HL even on potato phones. To run HL on it, you can use one of the many YouTube tutorials to learn more.
Half-Life 2, HL2:EP1, & HL2:EP2
You can play these games on the App Store. You just need to own a nVidia Shield tablet and a controller, I think. If you don't have these, I think there are ways of getting the APKs and playing them on other phones, though it will probably require something equally as powerful as the nVidia device.
Others
You can also play other GoldSrc things using other apps made by the same Xash3D publishers. Counter-Strike 1.6, They Hunger, and Poke464 I am pretty sure are on there. Portal 1 should also be a game on the appstore, but again it was made for the nVidia Shield.
Reminder, there's a live blog of the events here, hasn't updated for today, but today's events don't start until 10am PST.
From that link, here's Valve's schedule for today:
10:00am-6:00pm: GDC expo: Valve doing press demos of HTC Vive, showing off new Steam Controller/Machines etc.
10:00am-11:00am: glNext (now named Vulkan): The Future of High Performance Graphics (Presented by Valve)
Talk description:
>A technical preview of the Vulkan API, with advanced techniques and live demos of real-world applications running on Vulkan drivers and hardware.
Gabe Newell on Vulkan:
>Valve and the other Khronos members are working hard to ensure that this high-performance graphics interface is made available as widely as possible and we view it as a critical component of SteamOS and future Valve games. (source)
Well there's MMod which released yesterday. Right now it's got issues but a patch is coming.
It doesn't add new enemies though, it improves the existing ones; e.g. Combine soldiers will use AR2/SMG alt-fire, better accuracy, etc. Only two new weapons for this release: the stun baton and the mounted gun, except the latter you just pick up and use until it runs out of ammo. You should take a look at the page for specifics.
It's out now, download here!
Reminder: You'll need Half-Life 2: Update as well as the HL2 episodes.
It's not a 3. If you look at the logo for "hl2.exe" in your tf2 file, you can see it's still a 2 but it looks like a 3 because of an optical illusion. I haven't described it very well, here's a screenshot; http://postimage.org/image/ubfznn4jv/
Hmmm... Half Life was released on November 19, 1998. Half Life 2 was released on November 16, 2004.
That's 2189 days or 5 years, 11 months, 28 days excluding the end date according to this.
That means we're now waiting longer for HL3 than the people who played HL1 waited for HL2. Although there were expansions for HL1.
I've always thought the Overwatch Announcer is a big contributor to what gives HL2 its dystopian feeling. That's why I cut and paste certain parts of its dialogue around and turned it into my ringtone. Got the CP Dispatcher as my text alert too.
Has this always been the case? I can't find anything on the Steam store entry that says this.
EDIT: Modgone answered this in the linked /r/pcmasterrace thread. It's not actually the Valve Complete Pack, but a special "Valve Friends and Family Complimentary" pack. https://steamdb.info/sub/14/ Perhaps it's something Valve literally gives out to friends and family members of employees. Pretty neat.
Look at my post history! :) I posted an announcement about Echoes here 4 years ago.
Also, regarding the paypal link, the same one is linked on my mod page on this announcement here:
https://www.moddb.com/mods/half-life-echoes/news/half-life-echoes-source-map-files-released
Sergey Migdalskiy's talk about "Physics for Game Programmers: Physics Optimization Strategies" should have started by now. Let's hope this talk is more talked about on Twitter than the previous one!
Please keep in mind that this is a developer conference, don't expect any announcements.
Episode 4 wasn't intended to be set after the Episode 3 events but rather before HL2, before Ep.2, and consequently, starting before Gordon's arrival at the town. It was to tell Ravenholm's and Father Grigori's transformation into what they would became in HL2. Accordingly to interviews, neither of the studios working on the game (Junction Point and Arkane) came to develop a full fledged story, so no chance of a "epistle 4" surfacing on the internet. About the story, there's only public information that the first version by Junction Point had the main character that would have a "Magnet Gun" and two side characters with one of them called Scooter. The subsequent version, by Arkane, would stick closely to a horror atmosphere as depicted by concepts, but that's it.
Please, read about it and all of the References attached at the end of the page here
This mod have the leaked styleguide map that VALVe made for Junction Point studios
In conclusion, I don't think that Ep.4 was about Alyx after Ep.3 by any means.
EDIT: The protagonist would be a new character, nothing to do with Gordon.
They've actually been doing this for a while. The Expedia office has become known for their elaborate Post-It Note window displays of video game characters and has been featured on local news stations for it.
See the section "Post-It Wars" here: http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/sticky-note-art
And about them specifically: http://www.geekwire.com/2011/playing-bellevue-postit-wars/
Elsewhere on Reddit, you can see a big, multi-floor display they did for when the Seahawks went to the Super Bowl. Pretty awesome.
If you want to download these skins and have some modding experience you can download all the source files http://www.filedropper.com/prospekt and drop the folder into your steamapps/common/Prospekt and overwrite any conflicting files
It’s really cool to see how the menu evolved from a sequel/expansion to a standalone game.
Thank you! BTW There is another 2d remake of the original made in 2009 by Szymon Matuszewski, I played it through to the end for research, not a great game by any means, but I was stoked to find out he was only 16 when he made it.
Program was Topaz A.I. Gigapixel. I downloaded it mostly for fun, but they give you unrestricted usage of the program for 30 days so I've just been throwing anything on my computer at it out of curiosity.
Gamespy is dying/dead, as is its sister site FilePlanet.
I'm not familiar with PlanetHalfLife specifically, but the decline of the Gamespy family of sites was more pronounced in the Morrowind community because of the number of mods that were hosted there (and the number of broken links to those mods that have appeared as a result, and the number of mods that had to be migrated over to other sites like MW Modding History).
The general consensus is that there isn't a competent HD pack since the textures feel out of place. But there is a way to remove the texture filtering, or removing the "blurry maps" so they can look better: https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Half-Life#OpenGL_texture_filtering
Also, you can change your FOV: https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Half-Life#Field_of_view_.28FOV.29
I know you are used to the Doom community, but unfortunately there aren't major mods aside from Brutal Half-Life. It's a bit much too gory for my taste, even playing Brutal Doom, and it's very loud, but it can fit your tastes if you want a change in gameplay.
What do you mean by "impossible rooms"? Also, I didn't make this, I found it at this site. That link has a couple of other angles of this map, as well as some other Half-Life maps.
Probably KZ ZSN pro’s there like $30 bucks. Pretty decent chi fi IEM.
Here's my recommended order of importance, incase you have budget concerns -
These are all the paid entries in the HL franchise on Steam. For some reason Deathmatch Classic doesn't come for free with base Half-Life like Deathmatch Classic Source does with Half-Life: Source or HL2: Deathmatch with HL2. On that note, don't even bother with Half-Life: Source. Black Mesa is what Half-Life Source should have been.
Other than that, there are some freebies you can get -
https://www.moddb.com/mods/hl2-ep2-enhased-mod
Episode 2 mod that aims to polish some mechanics and add new stuff. You can select which options you want to enable or disable. Personally, I only want it because it has an option to improve Combine soldier AI.
Here is something that might interest you:
Paranoia is a mod released in 2007 that really did push the GoldSrc engine to it's limits. This mod was made by a russian team, so you'll have to expect russian voice acting, but there is english version available anyway.
Also, a sequel was released: Paranoia 2: Savior , however the sequel was made on Xash3D (alternative GoldSrc engine) instead, so it may not interest you as much as the original mod.
1) Download this archive. https://www.moddb.com/mods/dark-interval/downloads/dark-interval-part-1
2) Open the archive in 7-zip.
3) Inside of is the mod folder, "darkinterval-release".
4) Copy it into the sourcemods folder. It's in your Steam installation folder, for example F:\Steam\Steamapps\sourcemods. If folder doesn't exist, create it.
5) To run the mod, you need Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer installed. It can be downloaded by going to your Steam Library, in Tools secion. It's free, you don't need to pay anything, also you don't need HL2 nor Episodes installed for this mod.
6) When SSDK Base 2013 SP is downloaded, go to its Settings, then Beta, then select "upcoming" beta branch. It'll downloaded a few additional files.
7) Then restart Steam and the mod should appear in your list of games. If you did everything right it'll start and you'll see the green menu background with the Citadel on it, if it crashes right after start then you didn't do step 6 right or it somehow failed, in which case you should verify integrity of the Source SDK Base 2013 SP installation.
Yeah, it's on google play store - it was exclusive to NVIDIA Shield but people got it working on pretty much any android device.
The only one I could find is the "VU Games" demo, it has the early exploration section and Ravenholm: http://download.cnet.com/Half-Life-2-demo/3000-7441_4-10349536.html
I had to look it up - VU stands for Vivendi Universal, the Sierra owner who then became part of Activision. Valve is still Valve and has survived unlike so many other independents.
Lost Coast is the closest we have to a unique demo I guess.
It's been pretty quiet, as a lot of these mods are. Another mod I forgot to mention is Der Schwarz Nebel. It's a bit piecemeal, but it's yet another take on the beta with its own unique style, not as dark as Dark Interval (hmm) but a bit more stylish than Missing Information. There's a ton of mods, I'd recommend trying most of em just for appreciation, at least. https://www.moddb.com/mods/schwarzen-nebel
I don't think it's compatible with a controller by design, but something like this should be pretty easy to set up for her http://www.howtogeek.com/118059/how-to-use-an-xbox-360-controller-on-your-windows-pc/
I hadn't heard of that, but I know that they hired Adam Foster, the creator of the epic mod Minerva: Metastasis. Here's the full story, but if you want the rundown, they hired him due to his amazing map-making skills. After being hired, he worked on Portal 2, and then has seemingly been doing nothing at the company since then... unless, of course, he's working on a certain game that ends with a 3 ;)
First extended gameplay trailer, showing how all our mechanics, edits, and new features work in an un-cut segment. This gameplay trailer includes major level edits, new enemies, remodeled and re-animated weapons, new music original music scores, new effects, new AI behavior, new pathing, and just a whole lot more new stuff in general! This is all still WIP so nothing is perfect but I think we're making major strides.
Any feedback is appreciated. If you love it or hate it let us know here or at our moddb page.
For thoose that are interested, OP uses Xash3D, its a GoldSrc Engine Prort for ARM / (Mobile) Devices.
You can download on Android here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.celest.xash3d.hl
And its open source <3. https://github.com/FWGS/xash3d
Edit: And yes, I also played through Half-Life on my Phone, it was kinda janky but that somehow made it fun. And thanks to Multiplayer in your Network my friends of me & myself were able to just open a wifi hotspot and we were able to fight each other.
There is no exclusive cash only currency. They have 3 in game currencies. You spend dollars to buy "cash," but you can also grind cash from the free every 4 hour boosters, or in drops from PvP. You can spend "cash" to buy cartmen coins, which you need to level up and enhance your cards. Cartmen coins come from grinding the single player, which is also really well done (you replay each level up to 15 times, with increasing difficulty/drops). The last currency is the PvP tickets you earn from playing PvP (or in the PvP booster packs you can earn by winning 3 games, it resets every 4 hours, too). You can trade tickets in for items/cards that are on rotation (basically heavily discounted) and it changes items/cards every 24 hours.
There's also PvP challenges that you partake in by using the PvP cards for the challenge. You get 1 point per card that you're using. For instance I'm using the "adventure deck" (cowboys, Indians, and pirates) and I have 4 of the cards useable in the challenge (4 points per PvP win), and every point increment I hit, I get challenge booster packs or exclusive cosmetics for my South Park avatar.
All of the free booster packs give you "cash" and cartmen coins. The PvP booster packs and the challenge booster packs give you tickets, also.
It's teired, so the higher the challenge, or the higher your PvP rank you get more "cash", coins, and tickets.
Edit: I'm not sure I'm explaining it clearly, but if you try it, it feels intuitive. Except for the part where I started amassing cash, that part is what surprised me.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ubisoft.dragonfire
Are you root? If so you could benefit from a smaller DPI value, the status bar looks very crowded. The theme looks amazing though! Good choice of icon theme.
Almost forgot: you absolutely need map fixes from moddb because Valve messed up some entities and still doesn't want to fix them.
I don't think the expansions have a specific chronological order relative to the main game as they generally start around the beginning of the Black Mesa Incident so you could play those in any order you want. Uplink is more of a demo like Half-Life 2: Lost Coast, and Decay was made for PlayStation 2 but you can probably find a PC port somewhere.
I recommend you play Half-Life: Echoes, it's a mod but it's pretty good nonetheless.
Edit: Come to think of it you should probably play the whole series (HL1, Expansions; HL2, Episodes) and read Epistle 3 before playing Echoes.
Oh a new player joined. Welcome, have fun waiting for Half-Life 2 : Episode 3 till the end.
Side Note - For Half-Life 1, I recommend you to check out mods made by fans. Check out -
There's so many more but these are my top picks.
It's usually pretty cheap on sale, and there is probably one right around Christmas. I don't see the download link on their page anymore, but you could try this: https://www.moddb.com/mods/black-mesa/downloads
Edit: Also I probably wouldn't share my cd-keys online.
So... doing a simple google search, I got this: http://www.ign.com/blogs/qwertymusicman/2011/05/15/portal2-ending
At the very least, it has some interesting points. (The room changing...) The rest seems kind of crazy, though...
Here you go superchugga! PS: to get the intro to boot on startup ypull have to find and open autoexec.cfg in a text edit program once you do that, add the words “map valve” without the quotation marks, to remove the intro, go into autoexec.cfg again and remove “map valve” without the quote marks
isn't currently being hosted on Valve servers though - rather, a Network Solutions hosting page, which would explain the difference in IP address ranges.
Where are you getting organisation names from? Both (2).
There's a (relatively) new game called DUSK on steam which is inspired by 90s FPS games like Half-Life, Quake, Doom, Blood, and the like. It has an immersive campaign full of badass fights, cool secrets, etc, and references to classic games. Really hits that 90s gaming feel IMO.
Check out my Hammer Editor Mapping Tutorials series, a series of short tutorials for beginners I made because I found it somewhat difficult to find short and easy to follow tutorials :), hope it helps.
Looks like I'm not the only one who wanted to Half-Life up their phone. I made my ringtone the Overwatch City Announcer. I took bits and pieces from different files and put them into one ringtone.
https://www.mediafire.com/?13kbbo20g1woxhe
Also made this for my background. The nice thing is that every time I pan over on the screen, it's like I'm getting a new meaningful background because the Citadel is always in a nice place.
There's a pack of mods both on gamebanana and on Moddb that disable that. There's another pack called "Cinematic Mod Extras" by the same author that is even more thorough, if combined with the addon linked above.
Omg, I love both of those!
I just published this one yesterday oops. Not shipping yet, but I mean, like, we'll see. ~~Don't read my old ones my writing was really bad then~~
Go for it! ill put it somewhere to be downloaded It will say it doesnt have the right program to open the file. Selected chrome from list of installed programs and thats all you need to do. Also the other one i have finished but google wont install it so im trying to get it working.
While there are some you can find on moddb, the one I'm keeping my eye on is MMod. While it is a gameplay changing mod as well and doesn't really overhaul textures, it does add some cool lighting and effects, in turn making it look better. I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for, but it's worth checking out https://www.moddb.com/mods/hl2-ep2-enhased-mod
Precursor. Good level design with industrial setting, catchy soundtrack and it's immersive (you are not using HEV suit but some kind of reverse engineered combine bulletproof vest).
Runthinkshootlive.com has crazy amount of mods, from very old to current. Its advantage over ModDB is better search and it only has already released mods, ModDB has a lot of unfinished, "to be determined" release dates mods.
RTSL also runs Ville events which are thematic mapping competitions with deadlines. It's almost always themed with something related to HL, there are exceptions like Minimalism ville which wasn't specifically themed like that (and I highly recommend checking it).
Just recently there was Nostalgia ville released, the point of which was specifically to recreate Half-Life 2 nostalgia.
It also hosts downloads and reviews/scores for varaious old and new SP mods and single maps.
It's kinda aimed towards easier approached quick mod play while ModDB is more for following development of mods, kinda? What I mean is you can browse mods for Half-Life 2, Ep2 but a lot of them aren't yet done, they can be early access or even abandoned, the site hosts them but doesn't check them for compatibility. As far as I know, Phillip (host of RTSL) checks mods before uploading. So it's like a filtered gallery of ready mods.
There's a remake of Uplink currently in the works that, similary to BM: Azure Sheep, adapts the game to the canons of the original game so there aren't any contradictions. Here's the link if you want to take a look.
If you want the Crowbar Collective to see this, I suggest posting this on the Black Mesa Forums or messaging on twitter. If you really want to share your ideas with them you can't just expect them to see this post.
If the graphics turn you off, may I recommend Black Mesa?
These developers remade the original HL in Source Engine (EP2 version). If you don't like to pay consider the mod which essentially has more than half the game.
If it doesn't make it through greenlight, very likely not. If it does, then it's far more likely. They're using an older version of the source engine that doesn't support OS X, however, the hope is that if it gets put on steam, valve might let them use a newer version that does support OS X.
Someone other commenter on another thread mentioned that it might work using wineskin which is a "port" of the open source windows compatibility layer software, wine.
You'll have to download a few programs, but use this guide to help yourself out.
One thing it doesn't mention is the usage of Audacity. You'll need to use the amplify effect and punch in a negative value to reduce the volume of your sound file, then export it (making sure the sample rate and name of the audio is identical to the original file). It is free, by the way.
download xash3d software from playstore and download the files for half-life (folder is named 'valve')
create a folder on your phone internal storage (except for the parent directory) named "xash"
put the "valve" folder inside the "xash" folder
launch the Xash3D app
choose directory, tap Xash
play.
no, I don't know about gamepad compatibility. search on google.
And Chell from Portal with an awesome box design https://www.amazon.de/NECA-Portal-Chell-Actionfigur-17/dp/B00AE0FYP2/ref=pd_bxgy_img_2/260-7979442-3510768?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00AE0FYP2&pd_rd_r=9d76084d-1610-4f49-a428-744ef3cf442c&pd_rd_w=SjXOX&pd_rd_wg=SETfC&pf_rd_p=4490d326-3239-499b-8c8a-0dd8d6ad582a&pf_rd_r=XEPHGK0QXNTTJPWMX33Y&psc=1&refRID=XEPHGK0QXNTTJPWMX33Y (also from Amazon Germany)
Apparently they are coming back https://www.amazon.de/Neca-Gordon-Freeman-Deluxe-Action/dp/B008BCPEH8/ref=sr_1_1?__mk_de_DE=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&dchild=1&keywords=half+life+figure&qid=1611060072&sr=8-1 this one (from Amazon Germany) is coming in February this year in a new box for 65 euros.
If you like the sound of that (edit: pun not intended), try the mobile game Dark Echo. You're literally just a pair of white footprints on a black screen. You move by pressing, but can throw stones, stamp your feet, or tiptoe - and soundwaves are visualized as lines on-screen, so you're visually using sound to navigate in a dark maze. It's an amazing game, at least checkout some YouTube video or something. It costs a small amount but well worth it, and the core mechanic is really neat.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.celest.xash3d.hl
An Android port of the GoldSource engine. You can just put any GoldSource game's data on your Android device (Half-Life, Blue Shift, Opposing Force, Counter-Strike, Ricochet), and this should be able to run it.
Tbh Half-Life 2 is a 2004 game so yeah, the weapons aren't as shiny as newer ones but I'd say the fit well with the game, anyway if you are really that bothered by it download MMod https://www.moddb.com/mods/hl2-ep2-enhased-mod
You download each the the files shown here https://www.moddb.com/mods/schwarzen-nebel/downloads It got a big red button "Download now" (Cannot be missed). Then you extract the files using the program "7zip". Which step is not clear to you?
Theres been some soft comments about making some VR games for years. Kotaku link to some relevant comments. Artifact is the only confirmed game they are actually going to release in some relevant timeframe.
And, I guess, In the Valley of the Gods, too.
When you're done and you're itching for more, check out my mod Entropy : Zero on steam!
There's also a plethora of other amazing mods for both Half-Life 1 & 2. There's months of gameplay there. Check 'em out!
I'm not sure if there are any mods like you're describing but MMod isn't as aggressive in gameplay as SMod, and most of its graphical and gameplay features can be turned off if you don't like them. One of the major changes for enemies is that every soldier can now use the secondary fire of their weapons and that they have better accuracy.
Unless there's some other mod I've missed it's the most vanilla gameplay mod I could think of. Patch 1.1 is supposed to come today so you may wanna wait before installing the current one as it's got a ton of bugs that are fixed in the patch.
This gave me an idea (similar to /u/rjamesking's idea), and well... here's the result: https://imgur.com/a/9ztHL
Wait a minute, are you saying you didn't know that the rockets are laser-guided?
I'm sorry if I'm not understanding this correctly, but under the circumstances of the naming of the Half-Life games I believe I am obliged to ask you if you played the original Half-Life 2 first and didn't think Episode One was the first part of Half-Life 2.
In theory, all the demoing and stuff kicks off at the expo itself today. Hopefully, we'll see SteamVR, the new controller and Source 2 in action today (Wednesday).
Nothing beats having a physical copy, but most of the information from Raising the Bar can be found on the Half-Life wiki. For those unfamiliar: http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page I would also recommend reading The Final Hours of Half-Life 2 for insight on the difficulties Valve faced creating a sequel to one of the greatest games of all time. http://www.gamespot.com/features/the-final-hours-of-half-life-2-6112889/
The Black Box exists. I got it instead of the Orange Box. It's essentially the same as the Orange Box minus HL2 & EP1. For those who only wanted the new games.
EDIT: Apparently it was cancelled. I have the certificate with the download key that I got for it though. So I theoretically have it :P It must've never made it to production for retail sale.
If you have a hard-on for Beta stuff, Dark Interval is the best mod out there for that.
It's basically 'Point insertion' and 'A red letter Day' except the whole tone is waaaay darker. They're still working on more chapters.
Yeah, Codename: Gordon was a loose spin off of Half-Life 2 released in 2004.
Another 2d remake of Half-Life 1 released in 2009: https://www.moddb.com/games/half-life-2d
Those are the only 2D platformers I'm aware of based on the Half-Life games. If there's any others out there I haven't seen I'd love to hear about them.
I can assume that the files have already placed itself in the Half-Life folder under 'echoes' and that your only problem now is the mod not appearing in your Steam library.
Tell me, did you have Steam running in the background during HL:E installation? If so, uninstall Echoes and Reinstall it while Steam is closed.
If that doesn't work, try out the .ZIP method of install.
Good luck! My only problem for HL:E is that it runs in uneven framerates. I don't know why, might be OpenGL and AMD's poor support of it (If only Half-Life still had Direct3D support, i could've tested).
There's literally hundreds of High/Super Definition packs/mods for Half-Life 1 in ModDB site and also improves textures for maps.
Check the site out and search HD. https://www.moddb.com/games/half-life/mods
IMHO, the Low Definition models and textures gives the game a unique charm, something which the HD packs ruin IMO. Some super definition models have screwed up walking/running animations, in which NPC's either walk/run much slower than the original LD models.
But if you want to play the game with improved graphics, it's totally upto you.
All these programs look so similar... Though seems like it's LiveSplit.
At first I thought you wouldn't be asking about the timer as it literally took me 5 minutes to go to speedrunslive.com and check which of the tools looks most like the one in the picture
Check out Dark Interval. It may not be 100% accurate to the actual beta, but it's the most complete beta mod out there in terms of an actual story to follow instead of just a bunch of random disjointed maps thrown into a buggy-as-all-heck sourcemod folder. It has air exchange and cremators btw.
Here.
There's no workaround for pausing the game as far as I know. It sucks quite a bit.
Also, the game is a bit choppy on my PC. And this is quite weird, since the same computer was able to run more intensive games such as Kingdom Hearts II super smoothly, even with 60FPS patches. I'm guessing that's how it ran on the PS2, but I wonder, are you getting some slowdowns as well?
^ 10000 times THIS and make sure to play Black Mesa as well.
You can also start playing Team Fortress 2. It has an almost endless learning curve, was also made by Valve and has a large active player base.
Personally for me TF2 has become the only thing saving me from going over the brink while waiting for HL3...
I don't think that Valve even consider Adrian. He's part of a side story/spin-off, which doesn't really count as canon to HL all that much.
Moreover, you cannot see the HL1 expansions on the newly created HL website: https://www.half-life.com/en/home. A little hint that Valve don't acknowledge these addons and don't plan to bring them up in any major form.
For apps soon (wine libs are used in ReactOS, however NT kernel requires less hacks than Wine layer in order to make apps work) however Windows drivers will never be compatible with wine (yet more and more of them already is compatible with ROS at kernel level). Also ROS is being backed by Russian government (and hires developers at the moment)
VM has essentially same problems as single-boot + it is slower. It is not free in any way (nor as beer nor as freedom)
Linux dev community is already big enough, also not everyone loves Unix based OSes. Those two FOSS OSes are disjunct developer-wise (most Linux devs wouldn't spend time working on ROS and vice versa) so having 2 good free systems won't harm anyone, and would only result in more open market :)

Since Lambda1VR has been announced by Dr. Beef, i've spend the past days playing around with different HD packs and weapons for HL1.
The goal is to create a more modern look and to make 6DoF aiming using the weapons sights work better!Still a lot of work to do, but playable.
If someone wants to give it a try:
I used the community mod HL: Gold by "Crowbar" and tried different weapons models. Be aware - weapons will be aligned wrong and not match your controller location.
I will add a todo list later, so maybe with combined effort we get this thing airborn and the HD mod fully working.

Hmm, didn't see it in the workshop, all I see was this, last updated in 2016 :(

Here's a link from Moddb that'll have a ton of HL1 multiplayer mods you guys could try out. Be warned, some of them might not work entirely well with the latest Steam version of HL, but most should be fine.
Just install the mod and merge the hl2 maps (i don't know if this works, but atleast try), i think that require materials too idk, if you didn't found the link, here is: https://www.moddb.com/mods/missing-information/downloads/missing-information-16-full
Firstly, try to get XASH3D engine to run on Mac. I couldn't find a pre-compiled build for Mac so you might have to compile the program from source code. You can get them here.
Then you can proceed with the patch on ModDb. Kinda weird that somebody managed to compile the source for crossplatform for a mod but not for the engine itself.
I'll level with you chief, I can barely squeeze decent performance out of Alyx on my Acer Nitro 5. I gotta use low graphics settings, Steam launch parameters, not have any other programs running, the works. Game's still fantastic and fun, but I had to settle for a less pretty take on it, and I don't think others wanna compromise the Alyx experience for themselves like that. I'm also not well-versed in PC building, so I'm not the guy to talk to about what's beefy enough to build for Alyx. Hope you find what you're looking for though!
On the VR headset side of things though, I've heard Oculus software is a bit too bloated for its own good, and I played the game with a Quest 2. I have no way of knowing for sure, but maybe I'd have had a little extra performance boost if I played on a Vive/Index/WMR/whatever. But again, who knows.
