Wait, Valve said that they would release the next video on Tuesday, http://www.thinkwithportals.com/blog.php?id=5163&p=1(At the end). But it's only Monday.
Gentleman, Valve Time is now faster than real time.
WAIT. Please edit your post. You only have to play the games. Not get potatoes.
http://www.thinkwithportals.com/blog.php?id=5307&p=1
Potatoes get you a reward:
>There's also still time to collect all 36 potatoes. Anyone accomplishing this feat by the time Portal 2 launches will receive a very special, non-hat-based reward.
They made a sample page for the turret's instruction manual on their blog.
http://www.thinkwithportals.com/blog/posts/001/turretguidesamplepage.png
Also, from the "Lab Rat" comic:
> If any Aperture Science employee would like to opt out of this new voluntary testing program, please remember: science rhymes with compliance.
> Do you know what doesn't rhyme with compliance?
> Neurotoxin.
Do you need to get the potatoes, or just play the game?
Looking at the page seems to imply the latter to me...
Here it is, if anyone's interested. It explains quite a bit of some easter eggs there is on both games and how the second game started, considering the end of the first.
Also, from the music page, if you click the hole burned by the turret's laser it takes you to Turret Lullaby: A Portal 2 Comic.
Ringtone: 8-bit Sherlock theme
Notification: Portal 2 "Button Positive" sound here, under Volume 2
This came out before the game and will (hopefully) explain everything for you.
It's also a great read.
I love valve's comics. They always have a combination of interesting art and story, I mean, they even made a story for dota 2 which wasn't already established lore.
1) Portal 2 is in the same place, but just presumably a couple thousand years in the future (I don't know this for sure though), and it does explore more of the place.
2) There's no way to change anything in the final cutscene.
3) He has his own comic, called "Lab Rat". You can read it here: http://www.thinkwithportals.com/comic/#1
EDIT: Removed part of my answer from 2 due to spoiler reasons.
Spoilers below, but if you care, you should have played it by now...
She was adopted by Cave and his assistant, Caroline. GLaDOS and Caroline are basically one in-the same, as the technology meant to save Cave's personality wasn't ready in time and instead used on her.
Ratman is not her father, but a sympathetic and troubled researcher. He has his own comic, which is definitely worth reading if you want to see a little more backstory.
The Art Department. An online art school with a pretty killer instructor list of industry professionals.
Valve concept artist Andrea Wicklund was one of the visiting artists during TAD's three week workshop in Kansas City (She drew this comic!) and she gave the assignment. A team of people with Valve also visited online at an earlier date and gave a different assignment.
Obligatory theme music - Cara Mia.
Also, Turret Wife Serenade.
If you haven't played this game... get off your ass. Then go download the soundtrack.
Well, except the interlude comic between Portal 1 & 2 kinda goes against that, in that it explains why Chell was picked in Portal 1, and how she ended up where she begins in Portal 2.
Most of this information comes from sources outside of the games themselves - game commentary, <em>Lab Rat</em>, the ending credits, and other official stuff released by Valve.
That said, GLaDOS's name is in Her Chamber in Portal 1.
I've waited so long for this! I'm thinking some good samples from Zelda, Metroid, and perhaps Portal would fit well. Is it sad that this is my killer feature?
Edit: found awesome Portal tones. Button Positive is perfect.
Rattmann, not sure if you played Portal but he's supposed to be an aperture employee who survived something I can't say because of spoilers and in the first Portal he's following the protagonist to help her leave the facility.
For anyone wondering I did not spoil anything as you will never see Rattmann in game but I know that he's chasing the player because of a free comic released by Valve http://www.thinkwithportals.com/comic/
As you can hear from that video he became crazy. Creepy stuff and you hear that message while playing going into a hidden room, I went there the first time I played Portal 2 (bought it during steam sale) and I didn't even know about Rattmann (when I noticed there was a voice I wanted to uninstall), I always considered Portal as a game with a funny storyline but after learning about Rattmann I started to see it just like I see Half Life, they are in the same universe as Black Mesa is mentioned a few times by Cave Johnson.
Valve's got some great ones from Portal 2, already pre-made for you!
http://www.thinkwithportals.com/music.php
I'm currently using Persona 4's "quest start" jingle, and have been for a while. My ears are tuned to it such that I don't really want to change it at all this point. :) Before that I highly enjoyed Geometry Wars sound effects, but that's not musical at all.
I don't think there's any need to worry, cos the proper hammer editor for portal 2 has been out since May, so I guess this is just an extra to make designing levels easy and accessible to everyone.
If you read the Portal 2 comic, Mr. Bald Scientist says that this is their "generation's moon shot" unto which Ratman says "I'd rather have gone to the moon."
If you you've read up on people decoding that radio noise into an image, the Ratman's final transmission (achievement) turns into this picture, which is [a picture of the moon with a companion cube](/spoiler)
Edit: added the forgotten links....
Chell was not the only survivor as we learn in both portal 2 and the comics.
Doug Rattman was the one responsible for moving Chell to the top of the testing list. Which is why she was the first to get tested. Its not totally clear why. In the comics her file talks about her being "abnormally stubborn. Never gives up" and she was not even intended to be tested.
Its confirmed that Chell has a Father who worked at Aperture Science, as shown in the Portal 2 room with the "Bring your Daughter to work day" Potatoes. One of them has the name Chell written next to it and some text about a "secret incredient" from dads work.
Overall most Test Subjects are held in either Rooms, which are probably filled with special gas to keep the subject alive. Or in the sleeping pods ( which are probably filled with the same gas )
In the beginning of Portal 2, Wheatley talks about you being the only survivor. During the destruction of GLaD0S in Portal 1 the power went out. Rattman, who was shot by a turret in the foot, knew that the backup power soon will run out and therefore he rewired to power to only go to chells room. He probably died after that, but it is never actually confirmed.
Because of that all other subjects soon died and after an unknown amount of time, chell wakes up and Portal 2 begins.
How rattman survived is unknown. But if you want to check out the comics go for it: http://www.thinkwithportals.com/comic/?l=en Its not long.
Fun fact, the ending actually changed when portal 2 was released. The original ending had you black out after making it outside. Since valve wanted to have the same protagonist for portal 2, they changed the ending so you get dragged back inside by the party escort robot.
Also, the party escort associate is mentioned when you first escape the fire. Glados says to "assume the party escort position or you will miss the party". This position is laying down, and the party is a joke about a party with cake. In the current ending, the party escort bot thanks you for assuming the party escort position. Of course, I can't say much more without spoiling Portal 2, so you will have to play that to find out what happens next.
I would recommend reading this free comic that was released as a teaser prior to Portal 2.
There are two movies, possibly. One is the events of Portal inter cut with the events of the Lab Rat comic. Then a second film with it going back and forth between the events of Portal 2 and the Rise and Fall of Cave Johnson.
I may or may not have tried at outlining how it would work, would love to actually delve into it and write parts of it....
> For Portal I am not sure, maybe a prequel focusing on how facility got overrun by robots.
This was already explained in the comic and the original portal lore (before a lot of it was retconned by portal 2). More or less GLaDOS was turned on and killed everyone the neurotoxin could reach, those that survived became test subjects. She used the time in between to make robots and other things.
Portal 1 is around 3 hours long. Portal 2 is 8-10 hours. You should play through Portal 1 first as that sets everything up for Portal 2. Portal 1 is a bit repetitive but don't make the same mistake I did and give up on it halfway thinking you've got 100 of those same test chambers to complete, cause the ending is something special. Portal 2 is also way way more interesting environment and story wise.
Also, in between the two games, read this comic:
http://www.thinkwithportals.com/comic/
Oh and save Portal 2 co-op mode for after you've played through the single player campaign. That's really short but uses some environmental features that would be best kept as a surprise for the single player campaign.
Whevever you got your copy of the soundtrack butchered the metadata. It's supposed to look like (defun botsbuildbots () (botsbuildbots))
. Screenshot.
You can get it from the official site free here.
Read this for the second point.
For the first point... the song is irrelevant. I mean after the first game she was inactive, she would have been unable to sing and in the second game she makes references to how Chell murdered her. Indicating she was dead after Portal, making the whole premise of the song incorrect.
So, Tank is officially Chell.
Yes, from Portal. More specifically, from the comic Portal 2: Lab Rat, released online for extra story or whatever. Here's a link to the wiki about it- the actual comic's at the bottom.
The important part: this page and the last page. The first basically asks what made Chell so special, and the second answers it- not speed, IQ, or anything like that, but a near pathological level of tenacity.
"Proctor's note: Test subject is abnormally stubborn. She never gives up. Ever."
Which is exactly the way our good friend Tank won the contest.
There's a Portal 2 prequel comic that covers this: Portal 2: Lab Rat
Edit: I mean I see your point, and you arent neccesarily wrong, but it also seems clear (to me) from the comic that the tutorial and beginning subject are both Chell in the same room during and after a long sleep. The different painting may be a choice by the designers to foreshadow the finale.
> Oh. That's cool. It's the same tones as mine, but I had a larger pack, including the sounds from the Portal Gun, a Turret saying 'excuse me', and the doors whooshing open and closed. Still not sharing my specific link though.
no problem, all the rest is found here: http://www.thinkwithportals.com/music.php
If you're looking for more Portal 2-related content, check out the Lab Rat promotional comic, from back when Valve were commissioning comics to promote every damn thing. If you were paying attention during both games you'll have found the little hidey-holes, caches of food and wall scrawlings left by Doug Rattmann (SPOILERS), a former Aperture Science employee who coined the "the cake is a lie" phrase.
One of the Rat Man's little hideaways in Portal 2 (can't remember which level, but I remember it's to the right and downwards in a corridor) is where you find the song Exile Vilify playing. It's so beautiful. I discovered it without really looking, and just stood there for minutes, crying.
I recently downloaded the Portal 2 soundtrack and I really like using that music with the app. It's appropriately post-apocalyptic, and while perhaps a bit techno, it gives a great mood, and I'm definitely into the app for the storytelling kind of deal (I'm injured right now and honestly not mad that I can't run, I'm just mad that I can't continue in the app) so appropriate 'mood' is something I really like.
So far my favorite tracks for running are:
There are a lot of other ones that are great mood enhancers for a 'scary story' too.
I think in the future I'm going to look at other soundtracks as well - particularly video game soundtracks.
you know all those rooms with weird drawings and posters and writing in them? Those were all made by the same guy. Doug Rattmann. This is a Valve comic following Doug's story. If you haven't finished Portal 1, finish the game before you read it, because there are spoilers! This came out before Portal 2, so don't worry about spoilers there.
Wherever you happen to work I urge you to discourage your higher ups from developing any kind of nuerotoxin or potential all-powerful AI, and warn them that ground up moon rocks are ~~poisonous~~ awesome.
And for the people reading this: <em>the first two volumes of the soundtrack are available for free.</em>
I currently listen to both Portal 2 and the Frozen Synapse soundtrack. I never listen to music with lyrics, and almost never to non-soundtrack music.
The 'Cat Jumped Over The Moon', top left; foreshadowing?
Wonder if GLaDOS/Rat Man considers Chell as the cat from the thought experiment*: she was trapped in a room with neurotoxin (eventually twice) and survived...or in the case of Portal 1: [the player probably] died a bunch of times but kept coming back, so Chell's both alive and dead, I suppose?
*. ~~14~~ 16 mins later: Just read the comic and Rat Man makes a more logical reference to her being Schrodinger's Cat here
It looks like all official retailers (Steam, Amazon, Gamestop) are offering $5 off with pre-orders. This makes the PC version $45 and the Console versions $55. Keep in mind that the PS3 version includes a copy of Portal 2 for Steam (once you link your PSN and Steam accounts).
Amazon is offering it with an additional $5 gift certificate, Steam with a free copy of Portal and a two-pack that comes out to $40/game (instead of $45) and GS is offering a custom yellow skin/paint-job for the two robot protagonists.
Those are the only preorder bonuses listed off the official site afaik. Since I already have a copy of Portal from the Orange box and it goes on sale rather often on Steam for <$10 ($7.50 According to price history, $15 for the Orange Box during the holiday sale), I'd much rather get the custom skin that I can't get anywhere else. Plus I can have a copy on launch day by just going down to the shop instead of waiting for shipping from Amazon (yes, not an issue with Steam but custom skin!).
edit: it looks like you're in the UK (you referred to the prices in £ earlier). The only official pre-order retailer is game.co.uk and it looks like all they're doing is offering the game for £30.
I know its not exactly a response to your question but I wanted to let everyone know you can download the official soundtrack from the Official Portal Page! Although if you made it here I'm sure you already knew.
Also I really enjoy Science is Fun. It gives me chills.
She didn't just kill everyone as soon as she was turned on, they performed lots of test boots of her and each time she tried to kill the scientists working on her, so they had to use a kill switch to prevent her from murdering everyone. This is where the cores come in, they installed cores to try and stop her from killing, this lead to her pretending not to have the urge to kill "Since the installation of my new morality core, I've lost all interest in killing. Now I only crave science." after convincing them that she is no longer plotting to kill them all she proposes an experiment on "bring your cat to work day" where she intends to test the theory of Schrödinger's Cat, she asks for "...a little neurotoxin" so that she may carry out the test and the person in charge of GLaDOS agrees on the bases of "well as long as it's for science" this is what leads to her filling the facility with neurotoxin and killing everyone with the survivors as I understand were subjected to testing.
As for why she wanted to kill everyone I assume it is because of the fact she was indeed forced into it.
And a interesting side note, [all employees that were killed may have been cloned which could be what Atlas and P-body find at the end of the co-op campaign](/spoiler)
Edit:Link to the Lab Rat Comic
Yes! Get ready to dance your pants off, because they released the OST for free under the name Songs to Test By. 64 tracks totaling over THREE GLORIOUS HOURS of music.
Portal 2 Soundtrack (you should all totally download this)
Wind Waker
Metroid Prime
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles (really underrated, imo)
Half Life 2
Team Fortress 2
Super Meat Boy
Just a few off the top of my head. :)
If anyone's interested, fast one line Linux command to pull all ringtones instead of clicking each one (assuming you have curl and wget):
I dunno if this has been mentioned yet or even matters but in Lab Rat http://www.thinkwithportals.com/comic/#9 it shows a page from Chell's folder (zoomed in here: http://i.imgur.com/SRHKZ.jpg ). Her response to the question (or lack there of) was interesting but the string of numbers stood out to me, so I plugged em into a binary/text converter and got this: [The cake is a lie.](/spoiler)
Just a little joke I guess. Try it yourself:
>01010100 01101000 01100101 00100000 >01100011 01100001 01101011 01100101 >00100000 01101001 01110011 00100000 >01100001 00100000 01101100 01101001 >01100101 00101110
It's worth mentioning though that this is an application to volunteer. And the aperture logo is the 90s one, so that could help nail out the timeline a bit.
The binary from the comic translates into "The cake is a lie"
01010100 01101000 01100101 00100000 01100011 01100001 01101011 01100101 00100000 01101001 01110011 00100000 01100001 00100000 01101100 01101001 01100101 00101110
The problem with Chell’s science project is that it conflicts with the Lab Rat’s story, which suggests that she was a test subject before the facility went to hell. If so, she would be too old to be doing a science project like that.
Do that. He's fantastic. Clever, cheeky, and the music is great. Just know that those are his only two tracks with GLaDOS on vox. You can listen to almost all of his music free on his website. http://www.jonathancoulton.com/store/downloads/
There are some excellent remixes and covers of those tracks as well, check youtube.
There's also this great track remixed from the first game by Victims of Science: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQUaEF2bJZ0
Don't forget that the entire soundtrack is available as a free download, too. http://www.thinkwithportals.com/music.php
Indeed, the DLC page is reserved for content that one person has but another does not. Usually through preorder or purchase.
The Portal 'DLC' will not show up there because everyone gets it for free. It's just a content patch.
If anything check here: http://www.thinkwithportals.com/blog.php
And more specifically here http://store.steampowered.com/news/?feed=steam_updates&appids=620
Well, this may not be the freshest news, but Valve announced the Portal 2 Summer Mapping Initiative Winners. I just played 'Patent Pending' and it was quite good.
I don't think your theory works at all: *It's inconsistent with the comic *Most importantly, there is no way that GLaDOS could recognise you as soon as she sees you in Portal 2
The name of the track is "You Will Be Perfect" from the Portal 2 soundtrack.
EDIT: The entire soundtrack can be downloaded HERE completely for free.
The song you want is on Volume 2.
I have the "Valve Presents" book, it's basically three different sections. All three are available free online on the sites for their respective games. Most (all?) of the art is by Michael Avon Oeming. I recommend it if you are interested in at least one of the games - even if you're not, the comics do a good job establishing and fleshing out the characters.
<em>The Sacrifice</em> is a Left 4 Dead story. It's a dark, action-packed zombie story with strong characters. There's some great drama and character interaction, plus a few laughs. It's a prequel to "The Passing", the DLC that tied L4D and L4D2 together.
There are several Team Fortress 2 comics (the ones through "Meet the Director"). These are mostly short little gags featuring the characters, although a few tease the bigger story that has been shown through comics released afterwards (those are also very good, read them).
<em>Lab Rat</em> is a story set between Portal and Portal 2. It follows Doug Rattmann, the character whose hidden rooms and writings you discover in the games. This story is especially interesting because Rattmann is a paranoid schizophrenic - the art is colorful and frenzied, occasionally becoming more calm and monochrome during flashbacks or when he's medicated.
Here's my video! http://youtu.be/IdHVD3B9jtk
/u/playaangel I challenge you to do "Want You Gone" from the Portal 2 soundtrack, downloadable for free here: http://www.thinkwithportals.com/music.php or on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVVZaZ8yO6o
So, Valve just put up on their new portal 2 blog ( http://www.thinkwithportals.com/index.php ) that someone at nasa put on a little pic of wheatley on a space plate which will be fired off very soon - as in like a couple of minutes
I thought I've been reading Wednesday, the 5th?
[EDIT] http://www.thinkwithportals.com/ >"Oh yeah, by the way, before we forget, the first Portal 2 DLC, "Peer Review" will be out next Wednesday. For free. "
this seems to imply that glados(AI) was never fully running until she killed everyone.
maybe borealis was supposed to be run on glados, remember its an operating system that existed before plans for Glados(robot) did.
at the same time though theres a lot of disrepancies with the comic, like the fact it is bring your cat to work day rather than bring your daughter to work day, when glados hits the neurotoxins
From the official blog: "Well, the end is definitely near. Thanks to the efforts of a dedicated group of ingenious test subjects, we've located enough potatoes to generate the required power to start the GLaDOS reboot process. It's not too late to participate, though. The more CPU power dedicated to the process, the faster it will finish. What does that mean? From now until release, play any or all of the Potato Sack games to expedite the launch of Portal 2. Your efforts will be tracked on the official GLaDOS@home page. "
The comic is called Lab Rat, and it bridges the gap between Portal and Portal 2. You can find it here: http://www.thinkwithportals.com/comic/
Other than said comic and the two games, though, that's all the official lore you're gonna get. There's... actually not all that much to be honest. You might have to satisfy your urge with fan-made mods and fanfiction.
Heres a short comic which shows what happened in apeture from the perspective of the guy who wrote all the cake is a lie stuff and painted the murals in portal 2 (specific part is near the end) http://www.thinkwithportals.com/comic/
It depends which story you go with. In the original she kills everyone pretty much instantly, in the revised story she is activated for a period of time without killing anybody because she did not have access to neurotoxin. As seen in the comic http://www.thinkwithportals.com/comic/#23
If I'm riding my bike down the hill and am then transported to a universe where Earth (the planet) doesn't exist, am I still going "down" a hill that no longer exists?
In my games I rule that momentum is handled by whatever let you travel. Larger distances that have larger relative velocities (moving from one planet to another) requires stronger magic than going down the street. My method comes from the Ringworld books where they have "Transportation Discs." These disks have maximum amount of relative momentum chance they can handle. If they have to absorb too much, they explode. If they have to give you too much, then they simply fail. This became a problem in the books because as two teleporter pads in orbit got farther apart their relative momentum increased ( maximum when they are at 90^o 180^o) beyond what the Discs could handle and they started to fail.
I have a handful of Houseruled spells that preserve velocity so that single-use items that preserve velocity can be used to play with Portals.
I use the DS ringtone from Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon as my ringtone, and then I use the "Button Positive" sound effect from Portal 2 (scroll down a bit) as my text tone.
In terms of other ringtone suggestions, Supergiant games has a cool pack of Transistor ringtones to download. I use the "Terminal Signed In" one as my new voice mail alert.
It IS listed under the "Ringtones" on the Thinking With Portals website. You can download some other portal notifications there as well. The portal and button sounds are in Soundtrack 2.
http://www.thinkwithportals.com/comic/#1
This is an official Valve comic, released just before portal 2, showing more about ratman. He does look significantly older in the Portal 1-era time than he does in the pre-neurotoxin time, though that could just be all the stress and the crazy. It is interesting that her last name is the only censored bit of information shown, though; all the test subjects other than her show full names on the screen. Perhaps that does lend credibility to the Cave Johnson daughter theory, though her having an entry to the bring-your-daughter-to-work science fair still doesn't make sense then.
> Your logo is terrific and I imagine that will be a significant part of the grading, so no worries about your marks.
I disagree and think that's almost the worst part - it's not very imaginative. It's essentially a straight ripoff of the Portal 2 logo itself.
I really enjoyed the Fable soundtrack. Although it is really more similar to a movie soundtrack than a video game soundtrack.
I'm a big fan of the Portal 2 music. It is currently my favourite music to listen to while working. It is also freely available.
The music is actually from the Portal 2 soundtrack, which you can get free (and legally!) here. Not sure which track it is, but I think the whole thing is amazing.
it's made up of broken Italian-sounding words. Ellen MClain is an opera singer, and Valve had asked if she could write a song to be used in the game.
as for the 'art' song, i've yet to hear it released on the official soundtracks: http://www.thinkwithportals.com/music.php
Music with no words usually work for me, but even that is too distracting for me sometimes because I get excited about it. Sometimes I listen to the Portal 2 sound track because it's just background noise, but rhythmic at the same time. It works for me.
It's under the "Tools" tab in Steam if you already own the game. (Official blog post)
AFAIK it is basically an updated version of Source SDK with Hammer.
On page 14 of the Portal 2 comic you can see an HEV recharge station and what looks like a gravity gun on the desk. So, if you take that as canon...someone certainly stole something.
glados was still being worked on until she gassed everyone, every time they ran her they had to shut her down, note, meaning that she wasn't involved in testing until she gassed everyone.
as far as i can tell there is no reason for her to forge documents and rewrite files after she killed everyone
It's not completely necessary, but I would recommend it for the plot background and the great gameplay. If you choose not to you can pick up the story from a detailed summary like this. I would also recommend you check out this comic which Valve released that bridges the storyline between Portals 1 and 2.
Since you preordered Portal 2, didn't you get Portal 1 free?
Thats what I was thinking too. PinkyPills youthful style perfectly reflected to childlike wonder of The Silver Eyes. This artists style looks action-packed just like the Twisted Ones was as s story. The fourth closet should be drawn by a comic artist like Mike Oeming, who perfectly captured a scientific look for his official Portal Comic, Lab Rat
You can find the comic here, observe how the style is very reflective of the chaos and scientific nature of The Fourth Closet: http://www.thinkwithportals.com/comic/#4
You can find the answer to both questions in the "LAB RAT".
TL:DR:
On bring you daughter to work day GLaDOS tries to kill everyone but is quickly shut down. The scientists then construct the 'morality core' which among other things prevent her from using the neurotoxin emitters without permission. When she is activated again she says she had "lost all interest in killing" and "only craved science now" but she simply played the long game and later asked before the 'Bring Your Cat To Work Day' if the scientists could give her access to the neurotoxin because she wanted to "demonstrate a science experiment". And of course the scientists were like "Ha sure! As long as it is for science!"
And we all know how that ended for the scientists, and unfortunately for all the cats.
Aperture Science Psychoacoustics Laboratory
artist pic
> The Aperture Science Psychoacoustics Laboratory is the moniker of Mike Morasky, a composer for Valve. The laboratory is part of the Aperture Science Laboratory, researching psychoacoustics to enhance the immersive and multidimensional experience generated by Valve's most widely lauded game, Portal and its successor Portal 2.
> According to Aperture, "Whether you’re a mega-science corporation with decades of test experience, or a young start-up liberating your first test subject from non-testing with a chloroform-soaked rag, Aperture guarantees results. Wake up your test subject, open the chamber door, and press play—let Aperture’s patent-pending rhythmic compliance enhancers do the rest." Before I knew what a tulpa was, I was inspired by this little comic here: http://www.thinkwithportals.com/comic/
There is also a fan-made live action short here: https://youtu.be/539oNONcCrI
The voice in the short is what really inspired me to create Kuno. In fact, her initial voice was very similar.
This leaked photo of an Aperture Science laboratory implies they were working on a gravity gun before Dr. Kleiner. The same first-aid stations and HEV suit chargers seen in Black Mesa are also visible, though I suppose it's possible that those were manufactured by some third company.
Black Mesa's portal technology does not appear to be based on the same principles as Aperture's, however.
You can get it off of the official Portal 2 soundtrack which also has ringtone snippets. It's called Turret Wife Serenade. I also had this for my ringtone for a while!
As everyone knows, plants remove carbon from the air and replace it with oxygen. Carbon is created from heat such as hot car exhaust or hot factory stacks. Oxygen is cool which is why way up in the earths atmosphere where the air collects its also colder. So the plants take the heat from the inside of the case and replace it with cool oxygen acting as a sort of natural heat sink.

I usually listen to rock, EDM, and metal when writing because I somehow can convert the lyrics to gibberish, or it's a song that emotionally matches the scene I'm writing.
That said, I enjoy listening to the Portal 2 soundtrack for instrumental stuff. I usually write sci-fi, urban fantasy, or some in between genre, and it works well for that sort of feel.
In case you didn't know, Portal's lore extends beyond the video games. The LAB RAT comic occurs between the two games.
edit: Well, and the ARG.
A bunch of things to check out: - There's the original Portal of course - The Lab Rat comic, which takes place in between the two games - The various trailers and Aperture Investment Opportunity videos, which have some tidbits about the design/workings of some test elements, and show some earlier versions of the game aesthetic and tests. - In-game make sure to play with the developer commentary on, and read all the signs (especially in Old Aperture). - Replay the game, and wait for characters to completely finish talking before continuing. Probably about half the game's dialogue is only heard if you don't do what you are told - there's plenty of jokes, and a few interesting facts hidden there. (For example, if you don't answer the door at the beginning Wheatley will try a couple ways to get you to come to the door, and then tell you that you need to escape with him before the facility explodes.)
I cannot recommend the Neir soundtrack enough. Drag-on Dragoon is by the same composer, good stuff. The Eternal Daughter soundtrack is not only good, but free. Course, so is Portal 2's.
what's yours? I need to expand my playlists.
Edit: I forgot World Of Good also has a free soundtrack. My favorites are freeee. lol.
I absolutely do not want to piss over your lovely Christmas present, but for those who are jealous, that album is available to download for free. Not as nice as the CD edition (I love buying CDs & DVDs still), but if someone here wants just the music, it's all there!
Not sure why you're being downvoted, perhaps the lack of a link to an example?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c624QWR3CXI This my personal favourite, but there's quite a few good ones, and best of all it's all free.
I think the actually worst story in Portal is the one about Doug Ratman, who actually was a schizophrenic who was the last Aperture employee and wasn't killed by GLaDOS because she didn't see him as a threat. It can be seen in the comic made to bridge Portal and Portal 2: http://www.thinkwithportals.com/comic/
This picture right here reminds me of the Portal 2 comic series that Valve did.
Anyway, I used to draw a lot when I was younger but i have sort of lost touch with that area of myself. How do you keep yourself motivated? Have you lost motivation before?
It's a promotional thing. Valve is giving everyone who owns Portal 2 a 75% Off Portal 2 coupon as a way to promote the fact that you can now make co-op levels with the level creator.
I'm assuming its been found by now but just in case Portal 2: Lab rat
Also I converted it to read on kindle as a .pdf Just hit the download button in the top right
Enjoy.
In the same vein of Reconfigured and the like, I humbly submit the Portal 2 Soundtrack.
It was divulged in the comic "Lab Rat" that was released just prior to Portal 2. It was recently made into a fan movie, but I recommend reading the comic first otherwise it will probably be very confusing.
I don't know very much about it, just caught wind of it while I was working on some other projects and I kept meaning to check it out but had no time. From what I saw on Thinking With Portals it's some sort of puzzle creator that can be shared via the Steam Workshop.
I don't know how extensive it is in terms of flexibility, or whether we can use the workshop to integrate our new mod into the game like Skyrim Workshop mods. I worry that if this puzzle editor is extremely simple and flexible that there will be no need for Portal 2 maps created with Hammer after it's released. I have no idea if that's a valid concern though; I have not been able to check the beta out.
Thanks for reviving this subreddit!
Here are some trailers for the mod I worked on last semester with my University of Baltimore Level Design course:
I was the lead scripter and a team leader so I did a lot of level design as well. I'll let my classmates know about this subreddit in case any are interested in joining, though I'm not sure if any are redditors (yet).
When our mod is officially released, I'll make a post about it. I was also thinking of getting my class to create some tutorials on the Hammer editor but I'm not sure if it will be useful or relevant after that new Valve creation kit thing is released tomorrow. Thoughts?
Edit: The Portal 2 Creation kit thing I was referring to is referenced on Thinking With Portals. I don't know much about it yet, but I'll check it out tomorrow when it's released.
Valve released a comic that not only ties the two games together but gives us the backstory of Doug Rattmann (the guy who wrote "the cake is a lie" everywhere) and it's a pretty good read. Enjoy:
the soundtrack is free and will stay free. http://www.thinkwithportals.com/music.php
Portal 2 - The Final Hours is not game content and it was not released on pc the first weeks after the release of portal 2. it was first released on ios and later on pc. it also isn't made by valve but by Geoff Keighley.
edit: you only have to pay for the bastion dlc if you want it on xbox. it will be 80 ms points and on other platforms it will be free.
>The Stranger’s Dream DLC will be available for 80 Microsoft Points ($1) on XBLA, which we can’t make free due to Microsoft policy, so it’s about as close as we could get.
What do you think of releasing the soundtrack of games as a stand-alone product (free or otherwise)? I understand that many games may not necessarily have a soundtrack that would make sense outside the context of the game, though.
As a gamer, I really enjoy it when I can listen to the soundtrack to a game I played and (hopefully) enjoyed. A recent example is the Portal 2 soundtrack, which I'm listening to right now as this thread made me think of it.
This past weekend my friend/supplier came over. He, I, and my other friend smoked two medium-sized bowls and then started listening the Vol. 3 of the soundtrack. He (the friend/supplier) decided he needed to see "The Part Where He Kills You" and "Bombs for Throwing at You" in context. He was not prepared, especially for "Cara Mia Addio!"
