Hey! I got it from here ! There are a lot of dupes but this is the official version. I took him to Starbucks and the park and got a lot of comments on it! You can also buy a little fan that sits in the pocket just in case. But. I wouldn’t take him out on too hot days anyway!

Yeah hedgehog specific food is unfortunately terrible.
You want to get cat food for them
Between 30-35% protein, 5-10% fat, 5% or less of fiber preferably
Blue buffalo is what i feed my hedgie :)

I just ordered one hopefully it’s good!

You can get a thermostat like this to use with your heat lamp so that it stays just the right temperature all the time!
If you have a place to mount it to, maybe you could try something like these self filling water bowls?
The floats I used are actually intended to be floating drink holders. They can be found here. I thought that they worked great for him but if you would like ones specifically for hedgehogs these are the only ones I could find. I considered getting them but they weren't going to ship for another month or so.
We just typically buy it from Wal-Mart by the yard, usually about $3 per yard or so. You can buy the anti pill fleece for a bit more per yard, but if your hedgehog has a tendency to dig around in it like our male does then it is worth it. He basically creates a ton of lint from his bedding if we don't give him the nicer fleece. We also cut up smaller squares of it, about a square foot each, and use those to put a little extra in their houses that they can crawl in to.
Edit: forgot to mention, it isn't bad to take care of. If they get really messy for some reason we can just throw it away, but generally are fine just running a load of fleece in warm water through the laundry, just like a load of towels.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but after a year and a half, the gross wheels have not stopped. I have yet to try it, but some people suggest press on Cling Wrap (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KKC6C2I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_VPA1FSHBGQ6WKNNE3NA4)
You clean the wheel, cut the cling wrap to size, and press it on, peel it off when dirty and replace!
I just soak mine in the sink right now, scrub after a few minutes, and it's usually good. I clean the sink with vinegar and cleaning spray, it's not my favorite solution yet but it's easiest for me.
My thermostat is a very simple Zilla thermostat (link from amazon for example). I have never had issues with it not cutting on/off, but my cage can still drop below my desired temperature with the CHE on if the ambient temperature is not warm enough. I keep my apartment around 71 to accommodate my cage temp remaining at 74 with the heat lamp. You may need to adjust your max/min temps to a smaller range to ensure it turns on faster at lower temps if the CHE turning on is truly the issue. I believe I have my range set somewhere around 74-78 to keep the CHE running most of the time, but it has been so long since I set up my thermostat, I am likely wrong.
I would recommend switching to a direct heat source like a ceramic heat lamp with a temperature reader (see below suggestion). Tower heaters are best not left unattended for long periods of time since they're a fire hazard (heat lamps are too, but run less risk). Tower heaters in my experience tend to also malfunction or stop working after a few years depending on brand since they want you to have to buy a new one.

Recommended temperature control to plug a ceramic heat lamp into: https://www.amazon.com/Century-Thermostat-Controller-Germination-40-108%C3%82%C2%B0F/dp/B01I15S6OM/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=TEMPERATURE+CONTROL+HEDGEHOG+CAGE&qid=1620257134&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyNDBDMUROWVhHNVg3JmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUExMDA2Mzc5RTRaMkNMSVFORjNIJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA4ODY2MTQxMTQ4V0M5T1dCSVE5JndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==
Yeah! This is the one I have :) Good luck with your hedgie!
I use Aveeno’s unscented, oatmeal, baby wash and it works great.
I’ve also heard good things about this soap too and will probably try it once I run out of the other.
You might check the humidity in your hedgehogs room. If it's too dry, this can cause skin irritation and dryness. If that's the case, buy a small humidifier. This is what I use to keep an eye on the whole room temp and humidity of my office which is where my baby stays https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013BKDO8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Thank you! It's the Songmics Playpen on Amazon! I had to shorten it but it's super easy to put together!
Odin won't tip his water bowl, or even lean on it, but he'll sometimes tip his food bowl. We tried getting these, but the place we ordered from on Amazon couldn't get that we didn't need the big ones, but the small ones, so we gave up and ended up going with these that we got from PetSmart. They're pretty stable and hold enough food and water for Odin.
It's the largest one I found on Amazon haha. It's like a 15 inch ball, let me find the link again. Edit: Kaytee Mega Run-about 13" Exercise Ball, Clear https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0006L12UU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_BmL6AbAKQ4KAN
The carrier shown is great for a hard case while traveling, but it's way too small to keep him in for the weekend.
We have a pop-up traveling cage for our little guy and we bring all his hedgehog stuff so he can still get lots of exercise and have heat. It actually turned out to be bigger than his regular home (oops!), but too much room is better than not enough room. It definitely takes a lot more planning and suitcase room to travel with a hedgehog since they have so much stuff. But if you can't swing it, it's better to leave him at home and have someone clean his cage a couple times than to keep him in a small cramped space for days.
They will be a little stressed on the first trip, but they get used to it on the second or third trip. We think it's because everytime he made a trip, he was re-homed. Once he returned home after a trip once or twice he was a little more secure that he was here to stay and now he doesn't really care. That's our thought anyway.
I'm going to see if I can find the one we used on Amazon...
EDIT - Found it, added the link. I've heard a hedgehog can escape from this one if it's a little escape artist and I found it really flimsy, so I wouldn't use it as anything more than a travel setup. We're lucky that our little guy prefers to comfort of home (he knows where his food comes from!). The space it needs is quite large too. But it pops up pretty easily, about 30 minutes to set up including fleece bedding and accessories.
I think high quality baby products without any questionable additives should be safe. Just don't use anything with tea tree oil or anything else that's toxic for hedgehogs.
You can order the lotion I use on amazon if you live in the US, but it's a lot more pricey, maybe you can find it somewhere else for less money or you have to search for alternatives. But I can say that this one is easy to dissolve in water, it has just a subtle scent and my hedgie has never had any problems with it. I use the lotion myself, it's the best lotion I've ever had, but maybe you can find better options where you live. Good luck :)
Thank you! It's just a set of wire grid shelves from Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Cube-Wire-Storage-Shelves/dp/B0735CKD6R/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1534944503&sr=8-9&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=wire%2Bgrid%2Bpanel&dpPl=1&dpID=61%2Bs8UlytFL&ref=plSrch&th=1&.... And then I just bought a giant sheet of coroplast from home Depot and made a kind of tray out of it.
Volcanoview isn't active on reddit anymore, but MercuryEnigma is right. She needs extra room to stretch out and run. The 13" balls are usually only available online. Search for ferret or Guinea pig exercise ball. Here's one on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0006L12UU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_AEsiCbYFT33ZR
While adorable I’d switch to a water bowl. From what I understand their little tongues can get caught by the the ball bearing in these dispensers.

Sorry for the late reply. I got it from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Lollimeow-Transparent-Backpack-Breathable-Sightseeing/dp/B07DRNTNRP. It’s the expandable black one, and it’s surprisingly nice for the low price. Super easy to clean, made of seemingly durable materials, and pretty cute! I’d definitely recommend this to any hedgie owners looking to take their little friend on an adventure!
It's usually better because it puts less straining on the back of the hedgie, I personally use this plastic wheel because you need to dispose of wood after a while, even if it seems clean it is a breeding ground for bacteria and fungus which is not good for your hedgie. I've been using mine for over 5 years and my hedgie loves it, and its easy to clean.
If you really want a wooden disc wheel I guess you could try one like this. I hope you can see it It's from a dutch amazon but you'll get the idea.
i have 2 100w CHE bulbs both with 8.5 inch domes connected to a thermostat. you can set it so that it will turn the lamps on when it gets too low and turn them off when it gets too hot. you can also put a ceramic tile in the cage so if hedgie gets too warm they can sploot on it to cool down.
I'm not sure what the non-UK equivalents of these products are, but here we have...
A "snuggle safe" for keeping them warm on journeys https://www.amazon.co.uk/SnuggleSafe-Microwave-Wireless-Heatpad-Fleece/dp/B0014LJKUA
And "pet nap" heat pads as an alternative to CHEs https://www.amazon.co.uk/SAFE-Petnap-Electric-heat-33cm/dp/B00265EVZW/
Those combined with AC in the car & heating in the house should keep your hog happy
Hi! do you have any recommended CHE heating element? I bought a flunkers sun dome as it was recommended to me. It didn’t come with a clamp but instead is intended to hang from a height which is why I’m having my father build something and need a height recommendation. I’m not using a bin but instead this cage :) cage used !
I was gonna edit my comment to provide a link showing what I mean, but you replied so fast! Anyway you can walk into any pet store and find something in vaguely that shape, good luck!
Yeah, the check point is nothing big. It's like a 4 lane toll booth with a side office. Took me a while to find it but check it out.
Thank you so much! I’ve been looking at all different kinds of cages.
Do you think this would have enough ventilation? I’m worried about my girl climbing the bars and we have cats so whatever we get needs a lid. I don’t think our cats would hurt her but I don’t want to risk it.
I’m gonna keep looking at cages and enclosures regardless though.
They are available here 💖
This was recommended by our breeder. It warms up to the hedgie’s body temp but no hotter. Highly recommend. Our hedgies love it
K&H PET PRODUCTS Electric Small... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HML9QJ5?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
You can use 2/3 drips of salmon oil a day. Heddgies often get a dry skin that makes them scratch. This salmon oil is an example what you can use. You can also wash give him a bath in oak meal. If the problem continues let him checked out by the vet on mites.
I have this one from trixie :)
https://www.amazon.com/Trixie-Exercise-Wheel-28cm-colours/dp/B00365P9NY
I recommend also buy corrugated cardboard and insert it into wheel, will be more comfortable to clean wheel after using by hedgehog 🦔(pic. Below) https://allegro.pl/oferta/wkladki-wklad-kolowrotka-trixie-28cm-jez-pigmejski-7684401011
Oh no link didn't come through. I also realize I've commented to you in two different threads on this exact topic.
Here's a link to the sort I'm talking about, there's a ton out there on various sites and stores.
You attach it to the cage and the hedgie can walk over, raise it's head, and drink from it.
When they're in the sack you can also have a bottle near you and offer them a drink if they poke their heads out. You can put it close to them to see if they're interested and they'll let you know by either drinking or ignoring it.
Haven't had a hedgie for years, but for some reason this post was recommended to me... hm.
That said, if you don't want to deal with cutting up coroplast, you can build a pen out of those shoe organizer cube thingies pretty easily... (Like this, but you can definitely shop around; just picked this to show type.) Pack of them + a pack of zip ties, viola.
My main enclosure was actually made from tall ones, with a coroplast floor + fleece.
(Extra pro tip: Ikea vitmossa blankets = cheap fleece, too.)
We use something like this for a hedgie setup when traveling: https://www.amazon.com/Playpen-Plastic-Portable-Enclosure-Hedgehog/dp/B08H88DSN3
It's easy to pack because you can just disassemble it.
Pair a sack with a hand warmer like these. If you can afford it, grab a travel cage that you can attach a water feed to and squeeze in a place for food and litter.
Should definitely be bigger, the hedgehog doesn't really have anywhere to run in there aside from the wheel--I have a jumbo size of this amazon cage and don't use the 2nd level if you need a suggestion https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Small-Animal-Habitat-Jumbo/dp/B0756GBCJ1/ref=sr\_1\_7?keywords=small+animal+cage&qid=1662494465&s=pet-supplies&sr=1-7&ufe=app\_do%3Aamzn1.fos.006c50ae-5d4c-4777-9bc0-4513d670b6bc
I never had had any issues with a hedgie trying to climb and it looks like you have the lower part taken care of so I wouldn't worry.
We tried a couple wheels and this one was the best. Take a look and make sure it will work with your cage. If it does toss me a PM and I'll toss you some Bezos bucks to order it. Save that cash for a vet checkup :)
If you feel they are safe and cannot climb out while you clean, that should be fine. If you want another idea, I have this:
Pawaboo Small Animals Playpen,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08LVJPSVC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
You can fold it up after and store it away until you need it again.
My hedgehog has been eating cat kibble from the brand Chicken Soup for the Soul which he has been loving. The specific one he gets has a slightly higher protein content because he is only a few months old, so def check the composition of whichever one you choose. As for treats, my hedgehog doesn't really seem to like a lot of different fruits or vegetables, but he enjoys a little bit of steamed/slightly cooked carrots! Apparently carrots can get stuck on the roof of their mouths.
Also, I just got this toy (I put a fourth or so of the kibble in here) and it seems to be a hit! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DJRFIIU?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
It's not as closed off as that but we carry our Ralphie around in this. It's quite high quality and he love it in it. He just sticks his face out when he was to go explore or go poop and we let him down somewhere safe. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07H7DZ6RG?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I tried searching and never found one. Instead I purchased a purse from a thrift store and did a little DIY to change it into what I needed. It included a water proof tray with a washable liner and an exterior pocket outfitted to hold a a water bottle.
It looked a bit like this
It's hard to give you an exact amount, but you want insects to be about 30% of their diet with the other 70% being their normal cat/hedgehog food. I don't know if Amazon ships to you but here's another wheel option. I didn't like this one because it's tough to clean.
Silent Runner 12" Wide + Cage Attachment - Silent, Fast, Durable Exercise Wheel - Sugar Gliders, Degus, Rats, Hedgehogs, Prairie Dogs & Small Pets https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01B15GZ1U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_HD5E2ZDT81EQZWRHD047
I'd they won't ship to you DM me and I'll send you my old one. You can just cover shipping.
For enclosures I strongly suggest https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01DDAWB32?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share I recently switched to it to give my hedge more space to play! The only thing about it is that you need more stuff like toys and tubes because hedgies like to be around clutter.
We had this cage (though it was green) for our guinea pigs when the girls were small. You don’t have to have the ramp or that cross piece in there if you don’t want to, ii is sturdy enough to stand without.
I will say this cage was a pain to clean, and poop and bedding regularly made it out of the cage.
My daughter has a hedgehog now and she has this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FQ411ZH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It’s working rather well with a piece of coroplast at the bottom. No risk of her little girl climbing through bars or jamming herself through them either.
Guinea Habitat Guinea Pig Cage by Midwest https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001NJ0DPY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_8N0VS8XKJ60RNN5E0XD5?psc=1
This is the one I think you are mentioning. Top available but separate. I would advise against the ramps. Do your hog a favor and get a 4in pvc pipe or elbow or tee. They'll appreciate that way more then a ramp.
No, it doesn’t have top - we don’t have any other animals now so a top wasn’t needed.
This is the Midwest version we had: https://www.amazon.com/Guinea-Habitat-MidWest-Panel-Inches/dp/B001NJ0DQ8?th=1
We removed the ramps because they got filthy. At the beginning we had three young Guinea pigs so cleaning it was a headache, but with one litter-trained hedgie maybe it will be easier. We tried fleece, but in the end we had five adult Guinea pigs and it was too much work lol.
I made four liners, and so far I've only been switching them out once a week because she's only been going to the bathroom in the litter area/wheel. I wash it and her other fleece things (snuggle sacks and fleece strips for burrowing) in a "pet laundry bag" using fragrance free detergent and some white vinegar once a week while I clean her cage with a 50/50 water and white vinegar mix. The vinegar helps kill bacteria and prevent odors. The pet laundry bag I ordered is this one, which helps keep the washing machine and dryer cleaner and quills from getting all over- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08ZCNCTLQ?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
Yes, and a great and hedgehog-safe way to heal the ears is with "Lanolin" lotion, which is what breastfeeding mothers use. Here's the one I had ordered, but there's lots of different brands- https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B08L68WR4B?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
You mean the clear balls? I've also heard those are too small - can hurt their spines. Any way you can block off an area? Or maybe something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Casifor-Exercise-Portable-Hamsters-Waterproof/dp/B08CVSQ8PS/
This is the one recommended to me by the breeder and it's great! I don't use the second floor or the water bottle (which the other person said about theirs too)

Some guy mentioned to me that earlier versions had a problem w being able to be hacked. This is newer model w/out that problem. Doesn’t really matter either way- hackers can watch my hedgie all they want 😂🤣.

This one is the one I am currently using. Nice and silent but it is a little tough to clean. But good features. I like the outside gaurd to keep them from possibly falling out of the wheel. Also, there are different accessories like a running track of basically sandpaper to help with nail trimming.

The heating mat should be positioned at the base of the den while the heating lamp (ceramic, without red light) should be positioned high up inside the accommodation, if the temperature is too low in the room). As for the arrangement, there are many solutions to choose from (large with smooth walls) such as large display cases for reptiles or large plastic boxes! Don't worry if you feel a little unprepared and confused because unfortunately very often the shopkeepers recommend the wrong products and there is not much information about this animal about the correct management ☺️ let me know if you can open the links! #ricciocapricciomb 🦔💖
I have seen these recommended in the past. Personally, I've used the little plastic ones my breeder has sent home with my babies (basically just the same bottles as advertised with a normal spout) until they adjust over to a water bowl (an Amazon link to the bowls I use specifically - Living World Ergonomic Bowls). It might work to place the water bowl directly beneath the water bottle to teach your hedgie that the bowl is a possible option. Usually, they prefer using the bowl as the water bottle doesn't give them water fast enough - which is the main reason they resort to biting at it in frustration.
You do not have to use it. It is clear that they do not have to activate the ball in the water bottle and he knows how to drink properly which is much better than water bottle (no pros for it with hedgehogs) so you can easily change to a shallow ceramic bowl, use the chicken nipple or get a water dispenser. I use the water dispenser dispenser
Toy cars, various rubber toys (i.e. rubber ducks, small squeaky toys), foam tubes (much better than cardboard TP tubes) - those three are the most popular by far with our herd. PVC pipe is also great if there's room - not exactly a toy, but a nice cage addition. Live insects are also great for enrichment (superworms and dubia being my favorite).
Some hogs just ignore toys completely. As long as he has a wheel, that's all he needs - he won't be bored.
I had the same issue. I ended up going with these. . I was able to make a 2x4 rectangle.

Halo Holistic Healthy Weight turkey is on the recommended list of foods that I always lean on to find quality cat foods (from Hedgehog Central's forum), but it DOES contain chicken fat, if that is a byproduct that bothers your hedgie. I buy my cat foods from small, local pet stores (some are smaller chains) that have the higher quality foods. The limited ingredient foods just don't stay on the shelves at the bigger box pet stores I've found. I did a little bit of a dive into the list I linked and wasn't seeing much in the way of chicken-free foods that weren't also all fish. You may have more luck with fish based foods (especially if you add in other proteins like cooked turkey or scrambled egg that you make at home), though they produce some stinky poops from what I have heard in the past.
I can't give you any recommendations of foods that I have tried, though, as unfortunately ALL of my foods have chicken as a main ingredient. I checked my hedgehog foods too (I've used Mazuri and Hedgehog Precision), and both have chicken as well.

Do you have a recommended set for the CHE you like?
I saw this one recommended in the group
Hedgehogs are the kind of pet you're going to want to read a book on before you get. I recommend this one: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.amazon.com/Hedgehogs-Complete-Pet-Owners-Manuals/dp/0764144391&ved=2ahUKEwi4upqQorX1AhWLPM0KHdRbBk0QFnoECCoQAQ&usg=AOvVaw1S9kwDGLN1UFDoVoFzFge5
This subreddit is great for asking questions, but there's a lot to know. They're not beginner-level pets, but they are rewarding and one of the coolest animals you can have as a pet. You tell people you have one and they are immediately interested in hearing about it!
The need a good diet (cat food), a temperature controlled cage (around 75 degrees Fahrenheit), an exotic vet, a solid wheel to run on, a den inside their cage, a cage without horizontal bars, and quite a bit more.
Outside of occasional cage cleaning, baths, and nail trimming, it only takes about 5-10 minutes of work a day for the essentials.
There's a lot to know, don't get discouraged! Once you get the hang of it, they are easy to take care of.
First, make sure they are legal in your area because they can be considered an invasive species in some places!
Hedgehogs are prone to injuries if they fall so a hammock wouldn't be a proper toy for them but look into handmade toys on Etsy or small animal / soft toys. This sub's recommendation is these little minty cat toys since a lot of hedgehogs enjoy those. :)
These are good options:
Depending on the length of the outage but it can range from waterbottles to battery heater pads. I would go for the latter as it is more reliable for longer periods heater pad
They will all do this and it's very dangerous. They can really hurt themselves! You need to get him a new cage that isn't wire.
You can use ones that are wire if they have a solid barrier before getting to the wire area. I have the one linked below and removed the second level.

We're trying to get them all removed!
The biggest issue with bottles is that the water dispenses too slowly, leading to hedgehogs biting at the metal trying to force the water out faster. It breaks teeth very easily.
Usually, I will offer both a water bottle and a bowl for a week or so to make sure my hedgehog can figure out how to get water out of her bowl without filling the bowl with poop in the interim. Breeders almost always use bottles, so offering both just ensures that they have clean water available. Once my hedgehog figured out her bowl, she ignored her bottle altogether and I removed it. I clean the bowl with detergent every couple of days and rinse it and replace the water every night.
If you're struggling to find a suitable bowl, I love my Living World Ergonomic Bowl. It's a ceramic bowl with a low enough lip to easily be accessed, but a heavy enough base to not easily be flipped. It keeps my girl from plopping her feet in the water while she's drinking.
Definitely get rid of the rocks. It's not worth having to have emergency surgery from a blockage. My hedgehog loves sand for digging, and it seems to help keep her cleaner as well. You only want to use natural sand (no calci-sand, aquarium sand, colored sand, etc) - either playground sand or reptile sand that you heat treat prior to use (this is a Chewy link to the sand I use for reference) . With the sand as well, if you notice it in your hedgehog's poop, get it out of the enclosure. Eating a little the first time she sees it to figure out what it is is fine; eating it regularly can also cause a major blockage.
I use the electrical plug “HS103” that comes with an App called “Kasa” hS103 I manually set a timer so it goes off at 10pm and comes on at 9am.
I have it in orange, I think it’s the same. I got mine on amazon!
