There are two books of academic essays on various aspects of MST3K.
One is called Reading Mystery Science Theater 3000: Critical Approaches https://www.amazon.com/Reading-Mystery-Science-Theater-3000/dp/0810891409
The other one is In the Peanut Gallery with Mystery Science Theater 3000: Essays on Film, Fandom, Technology and the Culture of Riffing https://www.amazon.com/Peanut-Gallery-Mystery-Science-Theater/dp/0786445327
Might have what you are looking for.
Well, now wait a minute. Would it be better to make up a non-disabled actor and put them in gloves or whatever, and deny opportunity to a disabled person?
I'd argue there's a certain authenticity in hiring a notable disabled actor to play a disabled part. And it's not like they just used him for one scene, after his "discovery" in the film you see him several more times, dressed in the scientists' garb and helping out in the background.
EDIT: Peter Strudwick in his prime, when he was famous in the running community for finishing marathons with no feet.
Great list! I only have a few additions.
While the original Manos is classic, of course, I found the live Rifftrax version of Manos Hands of Fate better (Amazon Prime Video link, it's free if you have Prime).
I also found I really loved 2 episodes from the new season on Netflix. Reptilicus was fantastic, as was Avalanche.
Its uncertain who ended up with how much of the proprietary rights today. But it is known that Kevin still receives a very small residual. Joel and Jim obviously maintain very large shares. Trace has never publicly said anything about it. How much ended with whom is a mystery.
And it is very interesting. The BBI folks were very insular as far as how their operation really ran. And its interesting to see some of the seeds of discord that would sprout later: Joel and the movie and how the show is ran. Trace with wanting to do other projects than MST which never came to fruition, etc.
As for a follow-up on internal workings, I was once looking through the old newsgroups and came upon this article from the Green Bay newspaper from October 92 with Joel saying that it would be best to go independent with the movie and that he'd be leaving the show as host, etc. SEE HERE
Bear in mind this was when Season 4 was still shooting.
A Year at the Movies.
https://www.amazon.com/Year-Movies-Mans-Filmgoing-Odyssey/dp/0060937866
Highly recommended. He goes out to see a movie every single day for a year at many different locations and circumstances around the world.
That sounds about right, and may as well do it that way. Although if you don't hate reading comics digitally (I do) you can also get them on Comixology. Issues 1 & 2 are already half their cover price. I have been buying both covers, so you get them for like a quarter of what I paid. :D
Zoomed in link here
http://potrace.sourceforge.net might be useful. Runs on everything, command line, and GPL. No idea if it could be integrated into your workflow. I had to break down each frame to a BMP and then put everything back together in Premiere.
Back on Shout Factory TV, by the way
http://www.shoutfactorytv.com/mst3k-quest-of-the-delta-knights/5f18a4ebca70af00016a65da
Or I should say, for the first time on Shout Factory TV since I don't think this one was ever officially made available due to rights issues... until now.
I'd suggest Cave Dwellers. It was my first episode and most think it was the first true classic in the show's history.
There's also a prequel, The Rise of Torgo. I haven't watched it yet, but from the trailer, the guy playing Torgo doesn't come close to Mike!
I bought these off of Amazon since I couldn't seem to find anything at a store that would work. The cutouts in the matte board are actually 3.5 by 5.5 and it cuts off a bit too much of the image. I had to measure and go right on top of them and tape them from the back. I suck at framing stuff but these turned out pretty good.
It was actually pretty easy, since my mom used to work as a nurse practicioner she had a plethora of plain white lab coats to choose from. You could find one for cheap on Amazon here. As for the green, I used a special dye called Rit Dye in a neon green shade, which you can get at Michael’s or here. Relatively cheap options that give the optimal look. Happy cosplaying!
All Star Wars riffs are gonna become free when the Rifftrax app launches, so I'd wait for that.
EDIT: In fact, it's already out for Android! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rifftrax.android&hl=en
This film I think touches on this indescribable feeling:
http://www.hulu.com/watch/168285/american-scary
they interview Joel at the end, basically as a kid they made me feel like they were talking to me personally during the show
From OP's follow-up below, centered and zoomed in Google Map
I'm not very knowledgable with Google Maps as far as linking is concerned, but, here is the spot that I can pull up. Just go south and west just a tad. https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=31.676972,-106.266224&daddr=31.676972,-106.266224&hl=en&ll=31.684063,-106.249208&spn=0.060841,0.077162&sll=31.676981,-106.266222&sspn=0.000951,0.001206&geocode=FSxa4wEdkIGq-Q%3BFSxa4wE...
I got me one of these with everything in it. Seller seems to be really nice and helpful. I'd post pictures, but I'm lazy and he's not done yet.
Ah sorry for all the replies but I got obsessed and found the scene. It's 13:20 or so in Final Justice
You can watch 78 episodes from the ShoutFactory website located at this link: http://www.shoutfactorytv.com/film/mst3k About 2/3's of the episodes are stream from HULU, the other 1/3 seem to be from their own streaming platform. All are free to watch.
It's still available on Amazon as a digital download: https://www.amazon.com/Mystery-Science-Theater-3000-Sacrifice/dp/B003HIC3VG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1494193022&sr=8-1&keywords=final+sacrifice
Been trying to find the link for it for a while, but I finally found it! Amazon Women's Jacket
Not sure if it's quite what you're looking for, but Incredibly Strange Films is a very nice book with interviews (Ray Dennis Steckler! Herschell Gordon Lewis! Ted V. Mikels! Bob Johnson! No wait...) and articles on classic B and Exploitation films. Definitely worth a read.
Amazon Link: https://www.amazon.com/Incredibly-Strange-Films-Re-Search-10/dp/1889307017
Interestingly, I saw the original listed on Amazon - but the description talked about “Mike and the Bots”. I played it, and it was the MST3k version
https://www.amazon.com/Escape-Bronx-Mark-Gregory/dp/B077TVGCNJ/ref=nodl_
I bougt ExpressVPN just to watch it!
While it is annoying, I can understand the imagine the amount of work they would have to put into dubbing it, all that for a show that has close to no audience in Germany
I picked up this collection for cheap during a Woot! sale several years ago. I think it's long out of print by now, but 60 double sided DVDs containing 250 terrible movies, several of which were featured on MST3K. But, produced by the same DVD company.
For anyone looking for them, you can get 10 pairs for under $6 on Amazon. Of course, they don't come with a Gizmonics logo and a Kingavision label, but they'll enable you to watch the 3D parts of The Mask and you should definitely do that because they're honestly really well done (and really weird).
Apparently he put all of his efforts towards making pet food, and uh... it has quite the packaging design.
>Or do you think the season is good for understanding the history of MST3K, but none really stand the test of time, and that people should really skip it and start with season 1?
In the Episode Guide the Brains mention that they will probably not release the KTMA episodes on home video. (The episode guide was written in 1996 before Napster, before YouTube, before digital movie file sharing was really practical at all for most people)
They mention that the KTMA shows likely will never be released because of all the assorted rights issues, they also mention the Brains are not particularly interested in releasing the KTMA episodes, because they aren't very good.
Having watched the handful of KTMA shows that were part of various Kickstarter rewards, I think you (and the Brains) are on the money saying, they are interesting as a history project, but they aren't really all that great. Unlike most MST3K episodes, they aren't really worth a second viewing.
Looks like you can get one under the original title, Sampo.
Heh. Sampo.
Here is a clean link to the Amazon (USA) page. $17.99 Prime. Roger Ebert only gave it three stars!? That better be out of three. Leonard Maltin would have given it more stars; just say’n.
There's also a Japanese DVD release of It Conquered The World, but since the distributor's release of Invasion Of The Saucer Men was censored, this release might be too: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film3/dvd_reviews53/it_conquered_the_world.htm
There's also this Italian DVD of Amazing Colossal Man which I've heard is good: https://www.amazon.com/I-Giganti-Invadono-Terra-DVD/dp/B00DJAF5BM
Hello, I'm a bot! The movie you linked is called The Neutral Zone, here are some Trailers
I legit love this movie so much on it's own that I bought the official version.
http://www.shoutfactorytv.com/series/kamen-rider-kuuga
Sorry for being vague. It's not MST3k, but it's the only other place I know of with experience with Shout, and this show isn't being released on DVD.
As far as I can tell, they're playing all the episodes that are also on ShoutFactoryTV. Shout has at least an AppleTV app, probably apps for other devices as well. Far fewer commercials (if any) and you can chose what you want to watch. PlutoTV was recently bought out by Viacom, so the commercials and app interface are already getting worse.
Its still up on the Shout Factory website for streaming so there has to be something to this.
I was looking at the worst movies of all time article on Wikipedia, stumbled upon Manos, read more about it and it led me to watching the episode.
This must've been some three years ago, and now I'm on this recent craze of watching MST3K. I have three more saved up for later.
Didn't work for me until I turned off Disconnect. It seems that they track your info, and say so right on the website, so beware if privacy is a concern of yours.
This is the part that concerns me the most about their privacy policy:
>Will Pluto Share Any of the Personal Information it Receives?
>We value your privacy and take care to protect your Personal Information. However, we may share your Personal Information with third parties as described in this section.
While not the film itself, the series did get a complete release in France:
https://www.amazon.fr/nouvel-homme-invisible-Ben-Murphy/dp/B00DYCDWF6
While in PAL, it is region free.
Not a book but a short story by John Varley. It's one of the stories included in <em>The Persistence of Vision</em> and while I haven't read it, the handful of Amazon reviews are generally positive (FWIW).
fellow german here... torrents will be there fore sure, but just to be sure I can watch the new episodes instantly I got myself ExpressVPN for a month so I can watch US Netflix :) It is so insane how much more content Netflix has in the US compared to germany...
It’s almost always more expensive to buy it direct from a company, because they don’t want to undercut people selling their products.
It’s cheaper on Amazon:
I just noticed it's only $27.48 on Amazon
You can still buy it digitally on Amazon Video
EDIT: I just bought it at 10 P.M. today, Oct. 10th. http://i.imgur.com/dmrwcyB.jpg
He talks about it in the beginning of his new book.
I've got them all but I had to buy three different DVD collector packs to get them. Crow comes in the 20th anniversary box set
You were definitely wise to pick it up; the Gamera DVD is out of print. I think they only had the rights for a limited time. I'm 99% sure you could buy them on Amazon VOD at one point. Here is a page for one of those episodes simply listing it as unavailable.
There do seem to be cases where Shout! can only get the DVD rights though. For instance Squirm is not available via VOD but it was released only a year ago on Volume XXXI, which is still in print. Unless Shout! is deliberately withholding certain episodes for some reason.
It's on Amazon Instant Video. $3 to rent, $10 to buy. Probably more for HD.
John Varley (the guy that wrote the book that movie is based on) is an AMAZING science fiction writer. I highly recommend Steel Beach. Freakin' awesome stuff.
Cave Dwellers is hands down my favorite episode. I love it so much I bought the prequel: http://www.amazon.com/Ator-Fighting-Eagle-Miles-OKeeffe/dp/B0001YSGWY
The 30 minute flashback scene in Cave Dwellers? Yeah. It's that movie. In it, Ator must rescue his sister so he can marry her. I'm not making this up.
It has a higher budget too, and Cave Dwellers lifted the horse riding scenes from it -- making you realize most of Cave Dwellers was shot in a dark room somewhere.
