So i posted this in another thread but here goes. I have 3c/4a high porosity hair. On a good day my hair looks well moisturized and has great curl definition. On bad days my hair is as dry as the Arizona desert wildfire bushes and poofy. The holy grail for me has actually been using my hair steamer that I got from amazon
My curls stay clumped together and always look amazing and I use it once a week on wash days. I simply add conditioner to my hair and two strand twist and sit under this with a shower cap and then immediately follow up with a hot oil treatment and my curls have begun to slightly weight down more because of the moisture in them, my hair has never had that glossy, shiny look until I started using this once a week.
My comment was auto deleted for having YouTube links so I'll pm you those and post the rest of my advice:
Please please please get some prestretched hair. I wasted sooooo much hair the first 2 times. I've done my hair 3 times and I still can't taper the ends of the braiding hair without wasting hair/having uneven pieces. And buy a lot of hair. It's okay if you end up with too much but sucks if you don't have enough.
If you can, give yourself 2 full days to complete and be generous with the size. Your arms will burn and there may be times you need to undo and rebraid some braids because you couldn't grip tight enough or you used too much/too little hair. If you can get one of those thread racks, do it. You can portion out the hair beforehand and won't have to worry about braids being too big/small.
Make sure to moisturize the hell out of your hair and use some conditioning jam on your ends so they don't poke out of the braids. I didn't blow-dry my hair the last time I braided but I have pretty fine hair. I deep conditioned and moisturized the day before and put my hair in medium plaits. That made it straight enough for me.
Wow, I did not mean to write all of this lol. But I was really proud of myself for learning how to do my own hair. It'll be a long and frustrating process but after you dip the hair in some water and look at what you did, you'll feel so accomplished. Happy learning!
I am sorta embarrassed. These aren’t prescription i got em off this Stuffed Duck I got for my sister so i assume they are pretty cheap so you could probably google gold circle glasses and find some if you want to be cute but not able to see lol.

Depending on what those issues are it could likely be the contributor. I’d definitely consult your Dr. Former hair dresser for 10yrs and 99% of the time excessive shedding and breakage was due to a health issue. I’d always refer clients to get a check up. Also you mentioned rubber bands, you should never ever use actual rubber bands, there are no break healthier options to use. Unless you are just using the term for hair bands….

Hey, I’m also 4c high po male and keep my hair relatively short (grade 4 at top) in regards to the hair milk, would this be ok I have aloe juice spray but for some reason that just makes my hair more dry after 30 minutes :-/
This brush is a family favorite.
Anytime!
Reply here's is the hair oil I used you just need a carrier oil of your choice:
I second this comment, plus the suggestion to find something with hold that doesn't leave white flakes - especially if you're planning on using a longer-term protective style, like two stand twists or braids. I am obsessed with ECO styler's olive oil gel - this amazon link is much more expensive than the usual. I buy 5 pound containers of it (about 2/3 of a gallon) at my local beauty supply store for $9.99. That much gel lasts me around 9 months, and I use it for everything - braidouts, twistouts, buns, wash and gos, box braids etc. It doesn't flake and doesn't dry out your hair and it's cheap af.
Shampoo your hair if it gets dirty - no point in having long hair if it always smells like funk. I have to use a medicated shampoo because of my seborrheic dermatitis, and it's definitely drying, but it's better than having a gross scalp. During the summer i co-wash every 3 days or so (my scalp gets sweaty) and then use shampoo once a week. During the winter I co-wash once a week and shampoo every couple of weeks. If you work out a lot or you do lots of things that leave smells in your hair (you work in a restaurant or you smoke cigarettes, things of that nature) I'd recommend washing more often.
I used this shampoo before I went to the dermatologist and got prescription shampoo. I don't know why it's so expensive on Amazon. If there's a Trader Joe's near you, it'll cost you $3.99.
I got both at my local beauty supply store, there are great oils on amazon. Here is the big brand Jamaican black castor oil Castor Oil
The jojoba oil I have is the local store brand so I can’t find it anywhere else, but amazon also has good jojoba oils like this one too: jojoba oil
I opt for satin, same effect. You can find them 2 for $9 on Amazon WITH free one-day prime shipping if you're impatient like me!

I wouldn’t have leave out if you want to avoid damage because repetitive heat to blend it with the wig will cause that, I would recommend a lace frontal so it mimics a natural hairline without having to damage yours. I bought this one on amazon about 4 months ago for one of my wigs. It’s definitely affordable. Has not tangled at all, no issues with shedding, and I was able to bleach and dye it with no issues.
I haven’t tried that brand’s bundles but the reviews seem promising.
I have this one. I like it and it works much better than regular blow dryer. It gets a blown out look though. Not flat ironed look
Yes!❤️I got them on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CPLBH3K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_-B9xFbT2VYG3T
I either braid or twist the majority of my hair underneath and then I gel down a section at the front to blend kinda like a u-part wig.

Now I'm on the hunt because it seems interesting.
A dome-shaped hooded dryer is best for wash and gos. The adjustable stand version is preferred to the tabletop version. I personally use this Gold N Hot dryer and love it. I've also heard good things about this dryer from Sally Beauty Supply.
Cone-shaped hooded dryers are not recommended because they tend to pull the hair upward, but a hair net can prevent this from happening.
You could also buy a cheaper handheld dryer with a diffuser attachment. I've heard no other brand comes close to the performance level of the Dyson though.
oh no!!! don't try to dye over it, the color wont stay and you'll be damaging ur hair for no reason. loreal effasol color remover helped get black dye out of my hair!! it comes in packets and you might have to use 20 vol developer for it to really get that dye out. when i was trying to remove black dye, i did about 4 tries with the remover mixed w/ just water because i was afraid to bleach my hair again, but i think a one time go w/ the bleach should work without too much damage. https://www.amazon.com/LOreal-Effasol-Remover-Leaves-Recoloring/dp/B0041TFV2I/ref=asc_df_B0041TFV2I/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312128282842&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=10323150345909922185&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&...
Cant go without it. I use it in the shower to detangle my hair. I then follow with one of these to style my hair
I use this one for parting, that’s about it and as a last resort if I can’t find my other wide tooth comb which is rounded.
I prefer the ones with a rounded tipbecause I find the sharp ones rip out hair.
Get a parting comb. It looks like a rat tail comb but has a hook. It helps to make straighter parts.
If your parents don't like gel, try curl peace grip glaze. It will help as you braid.
To get even braids, first part your hair in equal horizontal rows and clip or tie up each section. Then separate each of the rows into equal sections. Rubber band each section. The rubber bands will also keep your roots tighter without gel.
I used one of these when my kids were younger. Maybe it could help?
I would be curious to see an example of the towel but I think it wouldn’t be enough because sometimes there’s an actual puddle on the ground. So it seems the water is getting out around her neck/ears/rinsing the front. I think she’s too upright even though the seat is reclined a little. I tried it on my mom and she also gets soaked so I think it’s the neck angle?
Here you are! Sorry, I can't figure out how to post two links at once 😂
Here's the exact link only $159 vs $400!
OP I wouldn’t recommend the scalp massager while washing the hair. Those tangled the fuck out of my hair. It’s risky and not worth it.
Also for product build up, I would recommend royal oils by head and shoulders. Also try not to put products on the scalp.
Also if you use serum/oil/cream/spray heat protectors (anything but aerosol), use them on damp hair.

I’ve been using this once a week for a year since having my hair fried by bleach. I found it better than Olaplex, (maybe because I have a course naturally curly texture) with immediate results and more wallet friendly. You just mix the contents of the vile with equal parts water and mix it into a nice thick consistency.

I also use the LUS brand “All-In-One” styling product that really enhances your curls, give a more consistent curl pattern and leaves it soft and shiny. It’s the first product I’ve ever used that I’ve been able to allow my hair to air dry. Before I always had to blow dry and scrunch at the damp stage to seal out frizz and fluff my curls, I haven’t used a blow dryer or straightener in over 2 yrs now!

All natural vegetable glycerin. I use on my skin too. Just mix a bit in with my lotion in winter or the dry patches I get on my face. It does wonders.
The raw shea moisture butter mask is worth it (for me at least)! Especially with my hair being colored, it takes away the dryness. I have medium to high porosity hair and this is the only masque that feels like its actually being absorbed rather that sitting like film over my hair.
You can get the 16oz on amazon for the same price https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0118QDDCQ?psc=1&ref=ppx\_yo2ov\_dt\_b\_product\_details
I haven't tried the manuka honey yet, so maybe I'll will.
Have you tried Aunt Jackie's Anti-shrinking gel? We use that with a heavier moisturizing cream and some black jamaican castor oil on the ends for my son's hair and it reduces shrinkage.
https://www.amazon.com/Aunt-Jackies-Flaxseed-Elongating-Curling/dp/B00MKCMDMY
No worries.
I'll do puffs if I want a particularly 'bigger' style but for Monday to Friday I don't need to get into it.
I have done 10 small puffs with scrunchies occasionally with the new cut but most days I don't bother with it and just embrace the shrinkage. I'm already manipulating my hair basically every other day so I try to avoid stressing my tresses out when it's not called for.
You can also use the concentrated nozzle on your hair dryer (slow, low and not too long on any section) when fluffing out your next day WnG to add a bit of stretch but don't overdo it incase you stretch out your curls.
I use Heat Protectant Spray with Argan Oil by Arvazallia on top of my AJ gel on wash day and when I'm using the next day concentrator technique as it's a 2-in-1 deal for me: it leaves my hair soft and adds an extra layer of protection (plus it doesn't create a white cast with the gel).
I forgot about that!
My 12 yo doesn’t have the patience to twist her sections over and over for each step.
I section into six sections and make Bantu knots held with sectioning clips or these clips which have nice long teeth https://www.amazon.ca/Conair-Roller-Super-Clips-White/dp/B000R87B1Q/ref=asc_df_B000R87B1Q/?tag=googlemobshop-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=292982497605&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12240594148526260180&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&...
The articles I've read recommend embroidery floss here in the states, because it's satiny and not hard on the hair. You could also use weave sewing thread, that I haven't tried.
Yes, detangling brushes really work for 4c low porosity. I have 4c hair, and I use a certain type of detangling brush, that has 8 rows of teeth, and also works for 4b hair type. It's called Uddiee Flexi 4C Hair Detangler Brush. This detangler hair brush has 8 row flexible independent bristles, doesn't get stuck, and can easily detangle matted curly, wavy, thick , long or natural hair-without damage. i actually only washed my hair once a week when it’s in a protective style - kinda shocked that other ppl are washing every day or every other day! and that’s saying something cause my scalp is one that NEEDS constant cleansing but even i would say that’s a bit much! if it was me i would probably rinse my hair in the shower after every time i swam (assuming you’ll be in a pool every day) but still officially wash and refresh once a week. to each their own tho! if you don’t think your hair or scalp will be extra dry from all that washing then go for it!
hope you enjoy your cruise tho, i’m jealous 😭 i was able to go on a cruise december of 2019 and i’m not sure when i’ll feel comfortable going on another one again but they’re sooo cheap right now that i may need to get over it lol
Hi! Not sure how helpful this will be but my hair is EXACTLY the same! Right in the middle/top I have the same thing going on. I am 25 and have 4a hair that is low porosity. I go to a black natural curl specialist and she recommended that I don’t get box braids or do high buns or tight styles for at least 4-6 months. Is your spot sometimes tender ?
The other things she recommends is rosemary oil and scalp massages. I also go in for scalp treatments which includes a comb that kinda electrocutes the skin…that’s not the proper term but I’ll link the Amazon page for it. I’m not sure who you’d be able to find if you live in a white area.

Hmm there’s an affordable set of Garnier Fructis Set of Garnier Fructis Curl Nourish Shampoo, Conditioner, and Butter Cream!Shampoo I have bought this a year ago and it worked a lot! The butter cream is amazing. I have to admit that I’m using a different Shampoo and a different conditioner but only because my family used the Garnier ones up, lol. I’m currently using a Shea Moisture Conditioner and a shampoo I brought from Amazon. The butter cream lasted me long, it’s on its final few squeezes now! If you try this set then I hope it works for you!
Of Course, you can. Where are you from? If you are from India then the Zoylee app is one of the best salon appointment booking apps. You can find and book a salon/spa/parlor near you. Their services are also well mentioned in the app.
This brush is fantastic for your curl type. Load your hair up with conditioner and brush it through, I leave mine in for a few min while I shave or wash my body etc, rinse, pull extra water from your hair, may take some time at first but the results were amazing for me. I really recommend this one in particular. Your hair is beautiful as is, these are just things that helped me over the years.

I use this brush, but its important to detangle slowly-- especially with 4c hair. I usually use my fingers first (going from the bottom to the roots), then I use a wide-tooth comb, then I use the detangling brush. Your hair also HAS to be wet when detangling and I find myself constantly spraying water on my hair during the process to get it wet again. (My hair dries incredibly fast because of the color though, so you might have to spray less depending on how fast it air-dries) lastly is to only detangle on wash day to make sure you aren't manipulating your hair too much.
As for tangle teezer, I would recommended changing to a comb that separates like the one I linked you. I was able to get mine at Walmart and I see them all the time in black hair stores. Sorry for the long post, but I know how frustrating detangling can be and want led to help as much as possible.

I loved the way the style turned out so much that I ended up buying another set of them yesterday. 😅 I got this style by washing deep condition and blowing out my hair the night before. I brushed out the hair to remove the set in “Brazilian” like texture, put styling cream on each weft and then used my finger to make Bantu knots out of the wefts. I eventually got tired of that method as it was taking a bit longer to do, so I switch to using small perm rods for last few remaining wefts. Both methods turned out fine however, the rollers did give a little better definition with less frizz but there wasn’t really a noticeable difference once the hair was added to my head, and if you don’t have perm rods it’s a great option. I let the wefts sit overnight and installed the next day. This for sure will be my go to style.
This is what I use, granted our hair textures are different, Carol's Daughter products are great. Trial and error is key to trying to find what works for your hair.
I use a paddle brush blowdrier from Revlon (a literal godsent) and it cut down my blowdrying time by more than a half. Unfortunately for flat ironing, slow and steady wins the race.
Thanks! It’s Mojafang brand on Amazon. I watched a few videos with people mixing gold and orange to get this color but just orange worked fine for me. A little goes a long way.

As far as my bangs, I just went in and did my best to define them. I used a specific finger-cooling technique I had found on YouTube, but I can’t remember what it’s called (sry 🙁). It basically just helped shorted the curl and make it more coily/defined. After I diffused, fluffed, and picked my hair out, I just put a dark colored headband on and started sliding it back and pulling my bangs forward. I just stopped moving it back until my bangs were hanging in a good length. I hope I’m making sense 😅
Best of luck, friend 🤞🏽
I haven’t tried either of those, but I’d just recommend you get the one with the better/most reviews since there doesn’t seem to be much difference between them.
Personally, I bought these ones two years ago and still have them now. I trim my hair myself at home and they’re great!

I think what you're lacking is actually just styling the hair and letting it be free. GreenBeauty has a video on the importance of styling hair with gels, heat stretching, threading, braids, two-strand twist outs for the longevity of black hair. I can't attach it because the mods here have silly automod rules. (Simply: it prevents fairy knots).
Also are you doing any protein treatments?

This hair catcher (tub shroom) has been the best one I've ever found, and I feel like I've used every possible one lol. Highly recommend it if you have a compatible drain. We also just do draino maintenance once a month or so.

I have low porosity, 4a/4b mix, high density hair & i went natural with no big chop.
When i first began transitioning my hair would shed & break really bad. The two things that worked best for me were Shea Moisture's Hydrate + Repair treatment
https://www.amazon.com/Shea-Moisture-Hydrate-Protein-Strong-Treatment/dp/B079TD4TW7
& rice water.
I still use the treatment every two weeks as a pre-poo before i wash my hair. I used rice water every two weeks in the beginning of my transition but i use it sparingly now. Maybe 2 or 3 times a year.
The rice water acts as a protein treatment but without chemicals and not as strong if your hair is protein sensitive. I used white rice but a lot of people like to use black rice.
I tried the Aphogee treatment a few times but just didn't like how brittle my hair would feel afterwards.
I highly reccomend the rice water. I was a skeptic until i finally decided to try it. I had a patch of hair in the front of my head that was so damaged & just wouldn't do anything. The rice water was the only thing that helped & made it able to grow & stop breaking.
Sorry for the ramble, i hope it was helpful!
Have you tried moisturizing your scalp, edges and hair with any Blue Magic products? Specifically, the Super Hair Growth. This has literally saved my natural hair and edges are slowly starting to grow back. Good luck!
Yes! It takes a while but I think that the more you do it the faster you get. Just make sure to have plenty of conditioner for slip! I also use a tubshroom. I bought it on Amazon for around $11. It's been a lifesaver, I would spring for the stainless steel one though, the one I have has mildew on it and if I can't clean it I've already decided to get a new one.
Oh sorry I thought you were referring to the one with the comb attachment.
I recently bought this revlon blow dryer a few weeks ago for less than $40 on Amazon.

I swear by Shea moisture's Dandruff control pre poo rinse! https://www.amazon.com/SheaMoisture-African-Dandruff-Control-Pre-Poo/dp/B00ZEF61D6 This stuff has been amazing for me. I used to get visible dandruff and have to wash my hair way to often which was drying and I think made it worse. I use this and rub into my scalp and let it sit at the start of washing and the dandruff takes waaaay longer to come back.
Edit: I actually went no-poo and just use the pre-poo rinse and condition. Honestly the pre-poo rinse has taken care of my dandruff and I found most shampoos to be to drying despite trying plenty of all natural ones. My hair is doing well like this
Does your partner try to detangle their hair when wet or dry?
I have my best luck on hair that is drenched in conditioner. My method for extremely tangled hair:
section hair into 4-6 sections with clips or hair ties
apply conditioner to a section till drenched. (Sometimes it helps to either (1) wet hair first with a spray bottle like this, then apply conditioner, or (2) mix conditioner and water in a spray bottle
finger detangle section
use wide tooth comb like this to gently detangle hair. start at the end of the hair and with each pass of the comb gradually move up higher until you reach the root of your hair and are combing from root to ends
put the section back up and move on to the next, following the same steps
shampoo and condition hair like normal
for extra detangling, I might finger detangle/ comb my hair again while conditioner in is my hair, using the stream of water to help ease out any tangles
If my hair isn’t too tangled, I basically do the same process, but I do it all in the shower (sectioned hair, detangle section by section with conditioner)
Naptural85 on YouTube also has some pretty great tips/ videos showing exactly how she does it
Also, you should totally check out r/curlyhair.
Sorry this was so long!
I have been using this mask for a little over a month and I have to say I love it. I don't think it's 100% CG approved, but it works for me. I have higher porosity hair as well. Here's a link to Amazon
Not sure which one you're using but I have this one that I use sometimes. I would not recommend it at that price tho($60!?), it was much cheaper last year. There's an updated model but the reviews seem so-so.
I'd suggest draping a hand towel over your neck to prevent burning, the unit I have gets pretty hot too!
Satin-lined caps are my favorite, but I alternate with satin scarves too.
Hey I just want to say that I really hear your struggle and frustration in this post. I think your hair looks really beautiful but I know its been pissing you off big time!
Your hair screams low porosity to me. I have high porosity so I'm on the other end of the struggle (currently battling super frizz life), but I've watched enough hair videos to know that heat is a low porosity gal's best friend. Hot water and heat caps seem to be the bare minimum of lo-po technique.
I found a heat cap that attaches to your hair dryer here: Bonnet Hood Hair Dryer Attachment- Soft, Adjustable Extra Large Hooded Bonnet for Hand Held Hair Dryer with Stretchable Grip and Extended Hose Length (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077KGXJGH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_hkoWBbY4ZV4HQ
Forgive me if you already have tried or considered these things but for $22 I'd definitely try out the cap.
Also you mentioned trying all the oils and creams in the book, but say argan is your current go-to. In my opinion argan is too light. I don't think it penetrates the hair shaft as well as olive oil. I'm high porosity and while argan makes my hair nice and soft, it does nothing for the frizzies around my crown. Only olive oil controls them for me.
I have yet to try Jamaican black castor oil but I have heard that is a super thick/penetrating oil as well.
I wish you luck! Don't give up hope!
No problem. I think it will make a big difference. The TGIN Honey Miracle Mask is a really great deep conditioner that many people love. I put a plastic cap on and then use a microwavable heat cap like this, very easy and convenient, works great.
I've had similar problems. A main factor is due to the weather changing but also my hairdresser told me a lack of drinking water can cause it too. A great shampoo I found on Amazon called Maple Holistics Sage Shampoo. I've added the link below: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CNTJHQO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1
I've found this to really help maintain a clean scalp with less irritation, flaking and itching. I would also recommend as a home remedy using Olive Oil and Tea Tree Oil as a hot oil treatment for like 20 minutes.
I'm still unsure if my hair is for sure low porosity, but I've been using the Shea Moisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Hair Masque as a conditioner and leave in. I love the smell, and it makes my hair very soft. I get pretty nice results without leftover residue just sitting on my hair.

I had the same frustrations when going natural - it's totally normal and not your fault. Everyone's hair is different and not everyone is going to be able to easily grow their hair to their butt without any effort. That doesn't mean that all textures of healthy hair aren't beautiful.
That disclaimer aside - have you tried the Kinky Curly Knot Today Detangler? I buy mine at Target, I know Walgreens (and Duane Reade/Ricky's if you also live in NYC) sell it too. When I first started transitioning, my biggest problem was detangling - and the breakage that resulted. This stuff made detangling sooo much easier. I also gave up using a comb on my hair - I have a rattail comb that I use for parting my hair for box braids and twists, but that's it. When I wash my hair, I condition with Shea Moisture's Manuka Honey deep conditioner, finger detangle after 10-15 minutes, then rinse, add the Knot Today and get rid of any remaining tangles with my fingers.
I'm 26 right now and my hair was 100% relaxed from the age of 3 until 23 (when I started long-term transitioning) so I know how hard it is to deal with a hair texture that feels completely foreign, even though it's growing out of your own head. Just know that it's possible to have healthy beautiful natural hair and there are plenty of people who are willing to support you in your journey :)
Have you considered using something like a shower visor. I used something like that when I was a kid and it worked well.
