Finley was constantly threatening to move the A's all over the country everywhere from Dallas to San Diego to Chicago to Milwaukee. While at the same time, telling the leadership in KC he was not going anywhere. If I remember correctly, the AL commissioner had to force Finley to sign a new lease with KC in 1966 when Charlie tried to back out on a deal with the city. By the time 1967 rolled around, the city, county and state executives just wanted Finley and the A's gone.
Oakland was looking for another revenue stream on top of what the Raiders were already bringing in as a successful franchise at the time. They thought some football fans would also support a baseball team and 81 home games sounded like a great idea. Finley was quoted as saying Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum had, "world class facilities" and, "second to none climate."
I know this does not fully answer your question, but even with all of the current information we have about Charlie Finley, I do not believe anyone truly knows why he moved to Oakland, or understood his way of thinking for many of the things he did.
The Kansas City Athletics: A Baseball History is a pretty great book which gets into far more detail.
I say this every time, but I 100% recommend Susan Slusser's book, 100 Things A's Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die. It's like $13 on Amazon if you can afford it, and will get you like 95% to our level of knowledge, generally speaking. I'm talking like deep, yet accessible history that goes back to the Phiily days, and she's a great writer.
The other 5% is accepting in your heart that Khris Davis is your dad.
If you don't want to fiddle with DNS settings, I have been successfully using TunnelBear. I ended up paying for the unlimited version before I figured that out, but it works better than ZenMate in my experience.
Now if somebody can figure out how to bypass the GPS-detection on the MLB AtBat app, I would be very happy.
I think the price drops once more. In September.
I am doing some kind of monthly thing with . I think it's like 20 or 25 a month.
But I also subscribe to a service that changes my location so I can get around blackouts. Unlocator I think it's called. Which is another 5 bucks a month. But I like it. Stream any ball game, replays any game, listen to any broadcast. Tis neat. I don't even have to listen to shooty!
I've said it before, but, when it comes to baseball, ESPN is NOT an unbiased network.
It's headquartered in Bristol Connecticut:
a 2 hour drive to Yankee stadium
and a 2 hour drive from Fenway park
They are as much fans of the Red Sox and Yankees, as our local sportscasters are for the A's and Giants. It's plain and simple, and it's the truth.
Hence, I don't watch ESPN. I check their site from time to time because they've good stats splits, but that's it.
My friend and I have a radio show now. (I'll put up the rest of the show today.)
It's fun.
EDIT: Speaking of podcasts/radio, what the best A's or baseball podcasts, especially on a technical level?
> $30.00 to transport 300 pounds of donated fresh produce that would retail for $457.06
Holy fuck, that's amazing.
Also, has the Alameda CC Food Bank worked with Humble Bundle or Extra-Life before? Would be a neat idea to have a charity event that focuses on food banks across the nation. Playing games to raise money for a Food Bank?!? I love PC gaming.
Great list of books and a very eloquent writeup. I'm glad you listed Dynastic, Bombastic, Fantastic. because it was a really spectacular book. If I may add some more:
Away Games. About Miguel Tejada's journey to the big leagues, and the stories of players he grew up with.
Holy Toledo. A biography of the influential Bay Area announcer Bill King, written by his broadcast partner and our current radio lead voice Ken Korach. Seriously, this book is fantastic.
Link to the trident in case anyone's curious. $340 is a hefty price for this thing, but I think Bassitt could probably afford it and still pay the rent lol
Huh. According to ESPN, he's only faced Sonny 8 times in his career and managed to get a double once.
I dunno why I thought there would be more than 8 AB vs. Sonny.
Of the A's? The consensus would be to pick up Susan Slusser's book, 100 Things A's Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die (100 Things...Fans Should Know).
If you don't want to read through all that, the A's broadcast team usually throw a tidbit of information or 20 out each game.
PSA: You can get a ski mask for $6 on Amazon Prime. Aren't in stock for another couple days, but great price.
The A's are -185 favorites for this game, over/under set at 7.5. The A's -1.5 run spread is +120. I'll take the A's -185 and the under; I wouldn't touch the runspread with a 10 foot pole. I believe in the hammer, but I don't believe in the hammer that much.
12:45 pregame show here!.
Me and a fellow A's fan will be commentating live on this game here, we'd love for you guys to come listen and give us feedback. If there's a general positive reaction, we plan on doing it more frequently as an alternate audio companion to the TV broadcast.
Sign up for a 7 day free trial of unloactor and you'll be able to watch MLB.tv. They don't even ask for credit card information so you won't get suckered into paying for a full month.
Buy the MLB package (tagline: "Watch any MLB game except the one you want!") then use hola to set your location to somewhere else. Its insane that MLB makes you pay so much money and still have to jump through hoops to watch their streams which are broken half the time, but here we are.
My wife and I came up with a few names way better than Kraken. Some of them "on the nose," but others also a hat tip to the local culture and history. But I think they seriously missed out on not going with the Mets again. First US based NHL team to hoist the cup, at a horrible time in history (WW1 and the Spanish Flu), and brought a newfound excitement for the game "below the ice belt." The 1917 Seattle Mets did for hockey what Wayne Gretzky did for hockey in the "sun states" when he was traded to LA in 1988. If you haven't read Kevin Ticen's book on the Mets, drop what you're doing and give it a read.
Welcome to the club bro. I'd also recommend reading 100 things A's fans should know and do before they die if you got the time. Or you can get the ebook if you prefer. Are you on Twitter? I'll grab you a beer next time we're at a game(Oakland/LA)
I'm glad you enjoyed it. If you're interested in reading more, DM me. I'll send you a hard copy of the book (link for proof) or a PDF'd version. Either option is on the house.
Use a proxy like Unblock-Us and you can watch games on on an Apple TV, Roku, or laptop. It won't work on a phone though.
Alternatively, PlayStation Vue's middle tier gets CSN California/Bay Area in Sacramento without needing a proxy.
~~~Unblock-us~~ works like a charm and it is $5 monthly. The instructions to how to set up your network and routers settings are detail and easy to follow and are specific to various types of operating systems and brands of routers.
EDIT: I was mistaken, Unlocator is what I actually used but it too is only $4.95
Cool! If it helps, Unblock-Us offers a free trial with no CC, so you can test it out with (I'm not sure if you have it, but I think they just started a free trial, but IDK if you need CC for it.
Yes. There are 2 ways to do this. Set it up directly on the PS3, or set it up on your router so it works with all your devices which is what I did. That way I can watch it on my Mac or my PS3 or my Roku or whatever I have. If you want to set it up directly on the PS3, the guide for Unblock-Us is here. The guides are pretty much the same BTW.
I've cancelled pretty much every season a little after the World Series, and haven't had any issues. Then I sign on again when the price drops. If you've bought the service before, you get the price breaks a little earlier than the general populace too.
And I use BTGuard as a VPN. They're great, and pretty cheap, so I don't mind paying for it.
sign up for Unlocator. You'll get a free week without even putting in credit card information and they grantee it'll work with .
EDIT: Just pop my head in the SF GDT, Giants fans having same trouble there.
EDIT: 2 Ohhhh, ^now ^I ^get ^it.
Eh, you wouldn't really want to use a proxy for this. A DNS region switcher would be much easier. The one I use is Ad-free time because it is the cheapest ($2 a month) , but there are a bunch of them out there, with Unblock-Us being the most popular. If you are interested, here is an affiliate link to Ad-free time.
I paid the 3.99 a few days ago for the online MLB sub. Then I signed up for a trial account with Astrill vpn.
Download and install their client, change the setting from openweb to openvpn, select UK and connect.
Works like a charm!
Trial is only a week long though, not sure what I'll do once it ends, minimum sub for it is 3 months at like $30 I think. Debating if its worth it or not, maybe just re-trial under wifes name.
This video (revelent part starts at 12:40) explains it pretty well. Also this book, written by a New York journalist also claimed Altuve wasnt part of the scheme. Clearly a biased source, but this article explains everything covered in the video and book I linked above.
He may have been complicit, but he didn't cheat.
Here is another book about the A's during the Moneyball era, following the Big 3 of Hudson, Mulder, and Zito. One of my favorites.
I'm in San Leandro, pretty close to the Coli. Its raining but its light rain, also the tarp has been laid out on the field. From the weather reports it looks like after 11AM the rain and precipitation levels should go down.
Tarp: https://twitter.com/melissalockard/status/1174366504160096258
Thats what I searched as well, so i searched again but with just "athletics" and this event popped up for today.
https://tunein.com/radio/Seattle-Mariners-at-Oakland-Athletics-Feb-21-2019-p1191880/
it should be super terrible but give it a listen, live recording at 12 p.m PT. Recording will be posted shortly afterwards too.
today's topics include offseason moves, ed lover and eric sogard's face
EDIT: Here's a link to the recording http://mixlr.com/the-rickey-henderson-of-podcasts/showreel/
And those in Northern California and Nevada who want to ACTUALLY see the games the proxy service unlocator is only $4.95 a month, is guaranteed to work with mlb.tv, and has step by step directions with images on how to set it up.
I've actually used it and worked for me like a charm.
Technically unethical, but I sleep at night.
Step 3. Enjoy Live A's baseball streaming when they play as long as you have an internet connection!
* Repeat steps 1 and 2 when the trial runs out.
I use Private Internet Access for VPN. However, it's still saying I'm blacked out on both my iPad and laptop. I know they check my location via GPS on iPad but how do they know where I am on my Mac Book Air?
Ditto.
I do the same. Cept I use Unlocator
My only issue with it is that sometimes it cuts out and need to rebuff itself--and it always seems to do it at the worst times. Like 3-2 count with runner in scoring position.
I see shit like this at Safeco every year. Special breed of obnoxiousness.
Don't worry, some Pats fans are like this too. I think it's an east coast special. But no fan base comes close to Yankee fans in terms of entitlement.
No, it's a dedicated hat rack thing. I like it a lot, but be aware the middle column is a little too small for normal fitted 5950 hats and you'll have to bend the bill a little.
