Dawn of War and Red Alert have less emphasis on base building than StarCraft. You may want to take a look at something like Supreme Commander. You can get a good idea whether or not you can run it here:
http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/requirements/supreme-commander/10589
If you can't run it, you can try Total Annihilation.
If you want to try "classic" RTS games, there are great free ones. Zero-K comes to mind!
For space RTS, I'd recommend something like Sins of a Solar Empire, and things like Star Ruler.
Try Istrolid. It's an RTS where you get to design your units (spaceships) from scratch. It's aimed to be a competitive game and has a decent amount of players for an indie game so getting a multiplayer match is easy. It doesn't have matchmaking yet, but it should be coming at some point.
Oh, and the game is free. Not F2P, but actually free.
There's also another great free RTS called Zero-K. Gameplay is very deep and just superb in general. So great in fact that I stopped playing Starcraft II for that game. The slight downsides are a relatively small community (hard to find 1v1 opponents) and a very old-fashioned lobby.
Have you tried Siege Up ?https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abuksigun.rpg_prototypeI'm developing it for last 3 years. It's a classical RTS with campaign, custom levels and level editor. Multiplayer and campaign editor will come in couple months.
Zero-K has an interesting coop mode, a good competitive mode, and it is also free: https://store.steampowered.com/app/334920/ZeroK/
Furthermore, if you decide that you liked the game after trying it out and finishing it, you can go back to the games that influenced it, like Supreme Commander. The reason I am not recommending it first is that it is not free, and macro based gameplay may not be for everyone.
Another suggestion I may make is Generals, because of seeming relevance with the current events. If the thing you like about Rise of Nations is actually simulating history and such, maybe going even further back to try Empire Earth 1&2 might be a good idea.
Take a look at Zero-K. It is completely free, and plays similar to games like Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander. In my opinion, the game has the best command interface of any RTS I've ever played.
If you're looking for a free multiplayer RTS then there's Zero-K, somewhat similar to TA/supcom. It has a small but active following, is in active delopment, receives constant balance tweaks and is open source. Lots of fun too.
However, the single player part is rather limited, so it's only really for those who enjoy multiplayer teamgames/1v1.
Get boot camp and stop limiting yourself to the ridiculously tiny selection of mac titles. OS X is pretty much bullshit if you want to get your game on, but owning a mac doesn't mean you're fucked.
it wasn't all that popular, although I personally liked it and agree with you.
only 1 mod on moddb....this and any dune series wasn't that popular....shame really.
The about page lists "new features and gameplay improvements" that weren't in the original:
I'm pretty sure this list is incomplete, there's probably more changes than these. I assume developers will be trying to improve balance as well.
Would the ultimate collection from origin not be better?
The ultimate sometimes goes on sale. I bought it for 75% off last year.
Why not just get him the Command & Conquer Ultimate Collection on Origin, it's the same price as Red Alert 3 and often goes on sale for 75% off (If history holds, it should do so in a couple weeks.)
Try the mod for Napoleon, The Great War. I played a couple campaigns through that, was fun! I don't know if CA will ever go to WW1 or WW2, my thoughts are they might do 40K before they go the the WWs.
The big C&C games (Tiberium Wars, Red Alert 3, Generals, and their expansions) all have this. The way it works in those games involves selecting units, hitting Ctrl 1-9 or a predetermined hotkey of your choice, and then being able to select/jump the camera to their positions. There are other default hotkeys like Q that universally select all units on screen with one press or all on the map with two taps (this does not select non-combat units.)
Battlezone 2. Part RTS, Part FPS. It's one of my favorite hybrids, and truly a hidden gem.
Some sites are claiming this to now be abandonware (it's about 15 years old now), but I don't know if it's true or not.
any one that says zero k is bad hasn't played it for long and if you're talking about language settings check out the wiki ,zero k is complex but very easy when you learn hotkeys go here for wiki http://zero-k.info/
Big robots blowing each other up with futuristic weaponry. Online multiplayer-centric with singleplayer campaign currently in the works. If you're still interested check out steam page I posted in other comments or get the game directly here: http://zero-k.info/
What you're describing immediately reminded me of Warzone: 2100 (http://wz2100.net/). After each "level," the map simply zoomed-out. So whatever terrible base decisions you made in the last level, you were stuck with. Likewise, any good choke-point placements stuck around, too. I remember playing this game for the first time and being blown away by the concept. From the second "level" on, I made sure that my decisions were prepared for the edges of the map to expand. Great game, if you can overlook its age.
I am not sure were to find game, but you can play it here http://www.openra.net/ also you can get game inside bundle here https://www.origin.com/en-gb/store/buy/c-c-the-ultimate-collection/pc-download/bundle/standard-edition
Stellaris leans more towards 4X and Grand Strategy than traditional RTS. If you're interested in getting into the former, check out some of the demos available from Paradox and see if there's a theme that suits your interests (Europa Universalis III and Crusader Kings 2 demos).
As mentioned by others Stardock Entertainment has some great RTS/4X games that suit newer players to the genre, but I don't see that they have any demos available on steam. Maybe /u/MindlessMe13 can help out?
Early Access launch is delayed sadly, but I think it's happening within the next couple of months: http://www.indiedb.com/games/shallow-space/news/limit-of-exploitation-ship-configurator-3d-ui-vid-46-mayhem
If you are a old lover of the classic command and conquer series then without a doubt. If you're not its still worth a try. If you don't want to pay full price a quick google search easily finds you discounts like this https://www.g2a.com/r/grey_goosteam
Looks like an interesting project, but I haven't seen much talk of it. Seems fairly reminiscent of something like Nexus: The Jupiter Incident with gameplay centrered around controlling a group of ships and managing supply lines as opposed to macro mechanics like Homeworld. Personally I've been wanting something like this for a long time.
But it seems that due to previous feedback they've had, they are switching from a multiplayer focus to a single player game and atleast won't be launching with multiplayer support (although it is a stretch goal for their kickstarter). For me this is a pretty big downside as I tend to prefer the added challenge of multiplayer as opposed to just playing against a computer (outside of campaigns/story modes) and a game like this seems perfectly suited to multiplayer.
Their Kickstarter can be found here.
You know, I have this bloody annoying habbit of getting defensive when people suggest good ideas and then implementing them anyway lol I guess you could say that I'm a troll in the closet :)
Anyways, you might find this interesting - it sortof makes the plans a little clearer http://www.indiedb.com/games/shallow-space/news/the-plan-i
Yes, this is it! Thank you so much, man, you saved my alcohol-infused evening!
It's probably shit, but I need to play it again because nostalgia.
Edit: Now to find a way to get it. I wonder about http://www.old-games.com/ where do they get off? As in like are they charging for abandonware or are they running a good old games-type for service? Or well, it's not fair asking you.
There's a guy working on a mod for 0 A.D like this but he's focused on Ocarina, the Kokiri and the Gohma spiders instead of Ganon's troops. Still cool though.
What patch? 1.4? There are some sites that have it, for example moddb:
https://www.moddb.com/games/armies-of-exigo/downloads/patch-14
And if you want a widescreen resolution fix, here it is:
http://www.wsgf.org/phpBB3/download/file.php?id=847
Also, I don't know what Windows you're running, I have Windows 7 and have no problem playing it. With widescreen it really is nice. I think i played Mark of Chaos, but i don't remember it. Anyway, try it out, maybe it will work this time.
Haha I wasn't even critizising the title, mostly explaining it since your commentary gave me the impression that you have no idea how metal works on that map. To give a better idea about the map: Most places that are actually on the duck give very good metal income, so usually one mex is enough there. But on low ground metal is a bit harder to come by. Here's a link to the Duck metalmap. Brighter = more metal. Darker = less metal.
A similar map would be Trololo where the metal map is actually used to draw silly things over the face. Trololo metalmap.
> Does it have matchmaking and a busy multiplayer scene?
Matchmaking yes. Whether MP is "busy" depends on your definition of the word. The official replay page shows 17 games longer than 3 minutes for the last hour. Most of them with 2 players, one with 12. Before the Steam launch most players were from Europe, so activity was highest during European evenings or so. Not sure if that changed since then.
Zero-K has physics. There's a trailer showing some and here's a list of more things that exist:
Keep in mind though that this is still a game, don't expect the simulation to be flawless.
Zero-K http://zero-k.info/ - Free and open source, inspired by TA, development mostly for multiplayer. Check out /r/zerok for casts done by /u/Shadowfury333.
It might not be as active as you are looking for though. Usually there's around a dozen people playing (and many more idling), on evenings this number jumps to ~50, weekends probably 100+.
Free, open source and created for multiplayer.
It has quite a few hefty features (see feature trailer) and a powerful UI, so it might not be the easiest to learn, but should still be simple enough if you played RTS games before.
DUNE 2000!
The trikes definitely gave it away. This has to be Dune 2000
It's based off the book/movie Dune, includes factions, trikes, and an old guy in a wheelchair.
Still, I am pretty sure that today's machines would not sweat if you scale Age of Empires 2 or Red Alert 2 maps up to 100x. This is actually an interesting project, I am tempted to try with one of the open source 2D projects like openra
I too miss the older genre of Strategy games. Dune, Command and Conquer, Age of Empires, those were some fine days. I played through the entire CnC series and I am so very saddened now that it is over (it didn't die a honorable death either, EA burned it to the ground and turned their backs on the series) Supreme commander was a pretty good series, and I am currently quite enjoying Planetary Annihilation though it is a bit repetitive.
Have you tried Open RA? Its a pretty interesting take on the older games and I love playing the Open RA Tiberium Dawn version. Takes a lot of good modern ideas and applies them to older gameplay.
I am not so sure about "old school" but my team is working on what i believe is a pretty competitive medieval MMORTS. It contains resource gathering, trade routes, espionage, real time combat, armies, city building and a lot more tactical depth than you might be expecting considering that your trade caravans will have to be guarded and other players can ambush them for resources or just ransack your kingdom.
Definitely not like a browser based game either, its a fully fledged 3d seamless world with 24/7 online play. Take a look?
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/animus-interactive/avalon-lords-redefining-the-mmorts
Im a huge lover of the RTS genre, its part of why I joined the team making this game. I'll keep an eye on this thread so if you have any questions, ask away!
Wine is not a game, but allows you to run a lot of Windows games on a Mac (and on Linux). I installed Steam with it, and am able to play Warhammer 40K Dawn of War Soulstorm, Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander without any trouble. I have not tried it on BFME or Cossacks yet.
Oh, I see, that would hinder your multiplayer experience a lot. If you're unable to get the port forwarding working, there is a simple workaround by using some free VPN such as Windscribe while playing. The downside is you might get a bit increased latency.
For proper forwarding, you would need ports:
2300-2310 TCP/UDP
80 TCP
RTS games are generally not F2P outside of community remakes like openra or spring so no luck there I'm afraid.
For an active multiplayer community you'll want to be looking at age of empires 2(might be somewhat hard to find these days) or age of empires 2 HD(found on steam). Most pros play on the original through through http://www.voobly.com/ but the HD edition has a pretty good community at most other skill levels.
Aside from that there is a warcraft 3 community based around it's enormous wealth of custom maps. These custom maps is where the moba genre(and also the tower defense genre) originated.
Lastly, you could try your luck with some starcraft 2 tech support sites because it's the largest competitive rts game at the moment.
$148 for a new boxed copy of a 12 year old game most of us already bought once in the past. Sounds like a great deal. /s

If you are on android (which it looks like you are from your link), you could try my RTS: Rusted Warfare - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.corrodinggames.rts
-- From the store page --
Rusted Warfare is an fully featured RTS inspired by classic real-time strategy games such as Total Annihilation and Command and Conquer.
FEATURES
• A pure RTS with no microtransactions and no DRM
• Online and offline multiplayer over wifi and mobile networks
• Over 40+ unique land, air, and sea units for balanced gameplay
This reskin is fantastic. I love how the Carbots animator changed not only the units but all UI elements and menu screens too. I can't imagine how much work that must have been for one guy. I've been enjoying this by playing through the campaign with a buddy. https://www.moddb.com/mods/starcraft-coop-campaign
Then maybe this it warns you when a Missles coming and theres actually graphics for your city burning but it doesnt have named presidents so idk CON
My name is Pete, I’m the independent developer of the strange real-time strategy game from New Zealand - Battlecruisers. I’d love to hear what you think of my game?
Battlecruisers on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Bluebottle.Battlecruisers
Battlecruisers is a game about explosions, masquerading as a real time strategy game that challenges your tactical thinking with futuristic naval warfare.
● Build the ultimate warship to attack, defend, and decimate.
● Wreak havoc with 30+ buildings and units.
● Conquer the AI enemy in 30+ levels with 3 difficulty modes.
● Particle system pyrotechnics make every explosion unique.
● Set to a dynamic score with music tracing the action of every battle.
Players expand their loadout with each conquest, accruing more powerful cruisers, rocket launchers, spy satellites, aircraft bombers, and gunships—and culminating in the discovery of glorious ultraweapons like the Deathstar Launcher, Nuke Launcher, and Kamikaze Signal.
Combining aspects of base building, tower defense, and tactical warfare with a twist, Battlecruisers is the explosive single-player strategy game not to be missed.
I am interested to hear your opinions about what I could improve in my game, or if anything annoyed you in particular.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.corrodinggames.rts Try this, I have it on Steam. It's a bit simple but it's an RTS in the Total Annihilation style.
You can buy the core game to try it out which has two factions: Wehrmact and Soviets. If you really like the game and see yourself spending a lot of time with it, you can buy the "Western Front Armies" DLC to get the US army and another German faction called Oberkommando West. The two DLC factions basically double the already immense replay value the game already has through online multiplayer. All the factions are unique and play differently; it's a great addition to the game.
Ardennes Assault is another DLC but it's just single player, so only get it if you're really into single player. This is a site that sells CoH2 and the expansions at Steam sale prices. The site is pretty solid overall.
https://www.g2a.com/company-of-heroes-2-steam-cdkey-global.html
https://www.g2a.com/company-of-heroes-2-the-western-front-armies-steam-cd-key-preorder-global.html
If you end up buying here, just make sure you buy the one that I linked, which says "Steam CD Key Global" which lets you redeem the game in Steam regardless of the region you're in. The Western Front Armies one can't be activated and played in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong; just something to take note of.
Considering the fact that EA sells Command and Conquer: The Ultimate Collection on Origin, which includes all of the Command and Conquer games that are on PC; that would imply that EA holds the copyright to all of the games and that they are not officially freeware.
>i3-6100u
if his laptop has no dedicated graphics (and the kind of laptop that sports it (this kind: https://www.amazon.com/HP-15-ay039wm-laptop-i3-6100U-Windows/dp/B01J4B2KL2) generally doesn't) I'd say that's pushing it.
Warcraft Total War and Rise of Mordor as well!
I'll be checking out Tales of Middle Earth and Medieval Warfare, haven't played those (also Edain mod if I can install BFME2 somehow)
Unfortunately no, you cannot buy it online. Armies of Exigos seems like abondware now, although next game of the devs - Warhammer: Mark of Chaos - appeared on GOG.com, so there is some hope. ExcaliBug was not popular at all and propably is hard to acquire by any means. I played emo years ago and it was only in Spanish lol
Some off the top of my head:
- Act of War and it's expansion High Treason are good C&C / Starcraft like RTS games. Avaliable on GoG.com
- Act of Aggression - Essentially Act of War sequel but is not directly linked story wise, created by same developers.
- Grey Goo - made by Petroglyph and quite fun
- Universe at War - Also made by Petroglyph, seems to recycle some of the C&C3 Tiberian Twilight concepts pre WW shutdown.
- Star Wars: Empire at War and expansion Forces of Corruption - Petroglyph again, it's like Star Wars Rebellions but modern and has recently been patched to run through steam.
- Command and Conquer & Red Alert Remaster is about to be released.....
- Supreme Command and Forged Alliance expansion, the sequal was ok as well but I personally preferred the first with expansion.
- Company of Heroes 1 & 2 - World War 2 RTS glory
- Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War - The first one with expansions only, the 2nd is Ground Control Style. 3rd one is a mixture so you may like that if you like Starcraft 2 coop.
- Age of Empires 1, 2 & 3
- Empire Earth 1 - the sequels are good but I didn't play the campaigns as much so can't comment on how good they are.
Neat, but it should be pointed out that generals (an by extension, the beloved zero hour) are still very playable right now and still look great. You can get the entire set through origin (17 games) for $20 here.
Rise of Nations is a real-time strategy video game, developed by Big Huge Games and published by Microsoft Game Studios in May 2003. The development was led by veteran game designer Brian Reynolds, of Civilization II and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.
Littlewargame. It's a must play for people who don't want to download games not their computer.
I think you'll like it. :)
My Littlewargame blog:
any one that says zero k is bad hasn't played it for long and if you're talking about language settings check out the wiki ,zero k is complex but very easy when you learn hotkeys go here for wiki http://zero-k.info/ if you dont like zero k there is no reason to diss it
I don't know how the latest revision works, but it used to be a metagame where factions attack planets. The attacking and defending factions would send players and an attack was resolved in a regular RTS game. Each planet represents a map and each attack would require one ingame battle. Winners would get influence points (so more than one attack was usually required to conquer a planet). Battles were usually 1v1 to 3v3 in size. If an unowned planet was attacked, then both enemy factions had a chance to send defenders.
Each round and through combat players/clans/factions would get resources to construct buildings on planets in the metagame galaxy. By the way, this is how a galaxy looks like. (at the time of writing the metagame didn't start yet). The galaxy map used to advance by one turn for each battle played. Galaxy map buildings would have no effect on the actual battles (though sometimes they used to be visible in the actual maps and could be destroyed there to give an attacker objectives to destroy even if they would probably lose a battle). Buildings would include garrisons/defenses, shipyards for galaxy-map bomber- or dropship construction (the first destroys buildings, the latter increased influence gain for attacks) and others.
Earlier versions of Planetwars used to have semi persistent ingame maps and starting units based on the metagame, but that was quickly deemed imbalanced/no fun or things like that. I haven't tried that version, but that seems understandable.
For more info check out Zero-K's wiki article on PlanetWars. Though chances are it's not up to date.
Maybe it's worth to take a look at the replay list. Probably has the information you're looking for.
Some years ago, before Steam you had to wait a few minutes or hours on a game, depending on the time of day and the game type and size you were looking for. Usually there was one big team (8 to 16 players) room/game running for half the day or more. Smaller games were usually 1v1s or coop vs AI or chicken waves, of which there was probably at at least one running for 90% of the time. No idea how long the current matchmaking takes.
I'm not playing any RTS 1v1 either. At least not against human opponents. It's understandable for me that many players just don't like playing alone. Allies can add a lot of fun, action and most important diversity to games. Different players allow you to experience new and interesting strategies not only when you play against them but also when you play along with them. That's a pretty big deal.
Just wanting to share this: there's 52 recorded Zero-K games with 12+ players in the last seven days, one of them a 70 minute long 6v6v6v6 and another one a 38 minute long 10v11 (one player left early so 10v10). It's definitely possible to play with friends.
The tournament lasted six hours and a couple minutes. All casts can be found here! (spoilers)
If anybody feels like watching the replays on their own, they are all listed in this post of the game's official forum (less spoilers, but requires game lobby/engine)
are yes i do love Warzone 2100 i first played in on PS1 when i was young
There is a good community version been out for years and same version if on steam to
No, it is a remastered version of the original red alert, dune & tiberean dawn. Supports up to 64 players online and any resolution (21:9/16:10). Has all the original campaigns albeit a lot harder but for me the online is where it’s at.
The original command and conquer, command and conquer red alert and dune 2000 are all free to play on openRA they are a complete remake of the games with updated engines and support multiplayer. Higly recommend playing all 3.
FYI it's scheduled for October: https://www.ageofempires.com/games/age-of-empires-iv/
I'm excited for it, but I think what we've seen so far is limited - so I'm holding reservations :)
there are two anime main menu mods for AOE : https://www.ageofempires.com/mods?q=anime&game=2&modid=0&filter=0&status=&sort=popular&order=DESC
granted that's not much but it's a start.
I'm pretty sure if you give it more time they'll make it into the gameplay. and in a way where it's just on your end so it doesn't even restrict your playerbase.
Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition is finally available now. If you want to know all the things that changed, check this release day gameplay changelog!
I always apologize for my bias, but have a look at 0AD. Its origins lie with classic AOE but it's expanded beyond that into a decent single player and very competitive multiplayer game. And it's free and open source https://play0ad.com
I reckon you'd actually really enjoy 0AD Empires Ascendant. You can play it on a Mac, it looks beautiful, and it's origins lie very close to Age of Empires. And it's totally free :)
0 A.D. It is very good community driven game. It is similar to age of gameplay. It is free to play. It has many historical different factions, different units, buildings for each factions etc...
A different technology you may want to consider is threejs for rendering and just do it as a web based simulation. It can be used to render 100,000 stars and if you already know a lot of javascript, should be reasonable for you.
Count me in. I've done a wee bit of podcasting myself btw, although mostly not about games. Here's a bit with me & my partner discussing my MMORTS Avalon Lords. She's a sex therapist & does a regular podcast that is mostly focused on sex and related issues. I used to be a regular on her podcast and had a ton of fun.
Wow, I've never played that series, but it looks interesting. I don't know if I could keep track of all the options and tech paths though. I'd always feel like I was overlooking something. I feel like having simple game mechanics which combine to create emergent complexity is better than having a lot of fussy detail. How difficult is it to get in to the game if you haven't played any of the series (but played other big picture strategy games like Civilization for example)?
I like your Youtube channel (Just subscribed), but I had a question: As you do a lot of audio commentary in your videos I was wondering if you've thought of checking the pronunciation of some of the technical terms or political words in advance? I think it would help to improve your videos.
It doesn't bother me. But some people might be put off.
Cleopatra was an expansion to Pharaoh, maybe it was that?
Rise and Fall: Civilizations at War
Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom
Zeus: Master of Olympus
Praetorians
Hegemony
Check Gog.com they have a lot of old RTS games from that era.
FWIW, add about 2k to the aoe2 numbers to account for players on Voobly.
Reference: More records have been set in the 2 yrs since this post but I'm on mobile and can't get them http://www.voobly.com/forum/thread/211645
(For non-aoe2 fans, Voobly is the platform that kept the game alive until the re-released "HD" version and is actually way better than HD. The HD version is more popular but there are about 50k monthly active users on Voobly, the vast majority of whom would completely wipe the floor with HD players like me :D)
There is still a small yet loyal MP community at game replays if you're interested. They use Gameranger to host MP games.
There's been quite a few community made patches over the years which in my opinion have made the game better, most notably the zoom-out option so you can have a better view of what's going in the battlefield, in the link I provided there's also a patch switcher so that you can play the official patches if you wish at any time without having to install them every time you want to play a different patch. There's a good sized community on gameranger there's usually a few games going on at any time of the day. There's also some unofficial servers up that you can access through the games normal online button. Note that the original servers were taken down and to play on these unofficial servers you must use the community made ones http://t3aonline.net/bfme2/ . I hope to see you online :)
I did not hand-pick those games. They are simply all games on Wikidata which are either real-time-strategy or city-building and have a Wikipedia article. (see the API query in the first line). 0 A.D. is flagged as inception 2001
The Logitech G MX 518 Classic is all you need. It's based off of the legendary MX510, which counter-strike pros used to use over 20 years ago. Beyond that you are largely paying for additional buttons, which you don't need or use in the overwhelming majority of RTS games.
The wight of the game is priced higher than hold. look at this shit! I have no idea why EA doesn't put it on origin, it was a very successful game.
Warfare Incotporated. You could play it already on Pocket Pcs, was open sourced recently and now free to play on android :)
The two games you mentioned don't share many similarities.
If you're looking for Supreme Commander, try Rusted Warfare.
If you're looking for WarZone 2100, try MechCom 2.
I am not the dev, but I really enjoyed the first game. I've been unsuccessful in finding offline games, but this was the first mobile game that kept my enthralled for longer periods of time.
If anyone is looking for a mobile RTS, I highly recommend MechCom 3D RTS for both iOS and Android. It is a fluid mobile RTS that other mobile RTSes can't compare with. This is from someone who's been looking at mobile RTS for a year.
