EDIT: Game is called Command and Conquer Red Alert; you can find it, as well as Dune 2000, and Tiberian Dawn here for free (As in, no cutscenes and music): http://www.openra.net/
And yes, it's free. Hope I don't break any rules doing this.
If you weren't aware, there a group of people that are actively working on OpenRA. Their goal is to remake all the classic Westwood games for modern hardware using an open source engine.
Currently they have Red Alert, Dune 2000, and Tiberian Dawn. Tiberian Sun is under development now.
These are some of the best C&C games and my personal favourites, nothing beats a classic game of Red Alert 2.
As a reminder you can get Red Alert 1 for free still - http://redalert1.com/ or you can try an updated OpenRA that has C&C Tiberian Dawn, Dune 2000 alongside Red Alert 1 as well as support for modern systems and Multiplayer!
Thank you /u/OriginInsider!
Seems appropriate right now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HUWUtTZvK4
edit: this seems to have garnered a lot of interest, if you fancy playing RA with a fully functioning multiplayer then head on over to /r/openra or to http://www.openra.net/ its free!
The open source project, OpenRA, is actually working on a Red Alert 2 remake right now. They have already done the original C&C, Red Alert 1, and Dune 2000. Awesome project. http://www.openra.net/ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAK-SwSZjbY
Developer video of the progress they've made on Red Alert 2 mod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrL8m48TePY
I can do one better: OpenRA is a rebuild of C&C: Tiberian Dawn, Dune 2000, and C&C: Red Alert with a fresh engine. It's designed for newer computers and supports anything from multiplayer to mods. They are also working on adding C&C Tiberian Sun and possibly even C&C Red Alert 2. There are many people playing multiplayer, and there are even tournaments. It's also free, easy to install and get running, and is constantly being improved. A year ago, TotalBiscuit did a video on it and it has taken major strides since then.
Tip: If you play this, enable "Pixel Doubling" in the settings. It will make everything larger and easier to see for those used to it.
Edit: Tiberian, not Tiberium (at least in this case).
If you are not aware of it, OpenRA is an opensource clone of Dune 2000, C&C and Red Alert, it works on modern computer and even om modern resolutions, here is the link:
Enjoy!

Hey! Have you guys heard of OpenRA? It's is a Libre/Free Real Time Strategy project that recreates the classic Command & Conquer titles with multiplayer capabilities! Check it out: http://www.openra.net/
I'll leave this here for anyone that's not aware of it: http://www.openra.net
Fantastic, free to download, fan made reproduction of Red Alert. Really strong community built up around it in the last 2 years, with new updates coming along every month or so.
Comes with Dune and the first Command & Conquer Tiberian Dawn as well, and the team behind it are currently working on Tiberian Sun and RA2 mods.
It is multiplayer/skirmish only, but still definitely worth a look for fans of the series (I found the Ultimate Collection to be quite unreliable in terms of compatibility, and this fills the C&C hole in my life quite well :) )
I realize this is /r/android but if you have access to a computer checkout the openra project at http://www.openra.net. They have remade the game complete with multi player support. Just thought I'd pass this on as one RA fan to another.
If you are into old-school games and like to tank rush, OpenRA is a good game to spend time on. It's more multiplayer oriented, but new single-player mode is coming soon.
It also includes mods for original C&C, Dune2000 and devs are working to include Tiberian sun & Red Alert 2 mods.
Openra is an open source rebuild of the old CnC games, for basically any OS you can imagine. It has fully functioning and pretty well balanced multiplayer for Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert. The single player missions are still incomplete, and progress is somewhat slow going, but the multiplayer is top notch with modern controls like attack move and a proper fog of war.
There's also word of work on Tiberan Sun and Red Alert 2 mods. I believe there is a buggy, incomplete build of tiberan sun somewhere.
I recommend it to anyone who wants to try scratching that itch.
If you want to try another option, I recommend OpenRA. It's open source and comes with Tiberian Dawn, Red Alert, and Dune 2000. They're working on Tiberian Sun, but I have no idea when it'll be ready.
For anyone that already owns the collection or is new to the franchise come join us over at /r/commandandconquer some of the games in the collection do need fixes to work correctly and we can help you out with anything you may need. Also for any of the games older the Tiberium sun I'd highly recommend openRA. it a free re-release of the first 3 titles and dune 2000 that was completley made by the community. It's updated and offers many extra features over the base games.
Not exactly old games but remake from old games. OpenRA, an open source remake of classic C&C games such as C&C Tiberium Dawn, Dune 2000 and Red Alert 1 with updated UI and quality of life improvements.
These guys are also working to port Tiberium Sun and Red Alert 2 to that engine.
Well, the OpenRA Project has successfully recreated (and, in some cases, improved on) the first two Command & Conquer games, as well as Dune 2000.
The only other possibility I can think of offhand is Warzone 2100; it is, however, more complicated in some respects.
For one thing most of the missions in WZ2100 are timed, with a few exceptions (such as the very first mission you play).
Also, you don't automatically unlock upgrades and new unit types as you play the game; you have to recover Artifacts, which unlock research projects in your labs, and you actually have to create your own unit designs before you can build them. (Unit design is a relatively simple process, though: you pick a body, a propulsion system, and a turret, give the unit a name, and bam - it's ready for production.)
Finally, the veterancy system in WZ2100 is kind of interesting: if you recycle a unit that's achieved any rank above green, the next unit you build will gain the recycled unit's veterancy bonuses. (Very useful if, say, you're scrapping a bunch of lightly-armored vehicles so you can build ones with heavier armor.)
So I'd recommend OpenRA. It's not on Steam, but it's a fantastic reimagining of C&C, Red Alert 1, and Dune 2k. They're also adding Tiberian Sun (a few months from now) and will probably add RA2 later.
You can also play Red Alert with OpenRA. It recreates the game so you can play it without dosbox and with functioning multiplayer. TB did a video on it a while back, if you're interested.
You might enjoy the OpenRA prodject. Right now, they have Tiberian dawn and red alert highly functional, with Tiberian Sun - Firestorm and Red alert 2 - Yuri's Revenge being worked towards. Right now, the TS+ games are deeply in development with many features not yet implemented.
For Red Alert, Tiberium Dawn and Dune, there is a (mostly) open source recreation called OpenRA. It's free.
It looks almost identical to the old games, and plays similarly, but with several more modern RTS mechanics like right click movement, an actual fog of war, country specific unique units (instead of just faction specific,) and other stuff. It also works natively on just about any operating system you're likely to use.
It should scratch your nostalgia itch without frustrating you over sloppy, unrefined controls.
Mr. Joe Kucan, thanks so much for doing this AMA! (Sorry Daniel, I don't know you. :{ )
I've been a C&C enthuasiast for my entire life having started with Tiberian Sun then Red Alert 2 (both of which I lost many hours to).
My question to you is what are your thoughts (if any) on the OpenRA project?
Personally I've always assumed it was incredibly difficult to remain in-character during the cheesy cut-scenes, but you (and many others) pulled it off and for that I thank you!
PEACE THROUGH POWER!
You can download and play it on Mac, Windows and every Linux imaginable from http://www.openra.net. A gang of super-awesome-open-source-heroes have rebuilt C&C, RA & Dune from scratch to work on modern computers. Play online, LAN or against bots. The campaigns are not finished yet but there’s at least a couple of missions you can play.
Sorry if I was being an ass. I'm just super passionate about RTS. lol
As for C&C, I think Generals and RA2 were regarded as the best C&C by a majority. Might be nice to give a shoutout to OpenRA as a free and open source platform for the classics.
I never played Homeworld but CoH is a toss up for me. I think CoH was a great game but I'm not sure if it should be on the list.
I think http://www.openra.net is also worthy of mentioning here.
It's an open source project to support modern hardware and features such as high resolution and better mouse control feature support. Oh and online play.
You can play original NOD/GDI Command and Conquer, Red Alert and even Dune 2000.
It's worth checking out of you're interested in more open source RTS games :)
The problem here is that you are running 20140722 (an old release).
You need to update at openra.net/download to release-20141029 (the current release at the time of this post).
Hey swolf, I honestly didn't feel like replying because you seemed pretty combatative out of the gate, I'd hope that someone as part of the openra community would be more greatful for the work provided by the openra devs, they put lots of personal time and work into this, you can see here yourself at github.com/openra
OK, now down to business there is no distribution specific release. all of the distribution specific releases are community managed but are linked at the bottom to be helpful.
The devs try to maintain the maximum support for all Linux platforms by using AppImages. From the download page (http://www.openra.net/download/) select Linux and then you can select the latest Appimages for Red Alert, there is even some link for using the 'optional appimage utility' but generally you want to make your .appimage file executable and then run it and it should just work, no need to install.
I hope this gets you up and running and if you have any errors please share the logs.
Regards
Not sure if this is very well known, but there is an open source Red Alert 1 that works just fine on modern PCs and networks. I've used it at a LAN party for my 30th and everyone had a blast with it. Just like we remembered.
I actually think that it is open source don't know if thats whats you are asking. Westwood put all the code online sometime, and you can already play an remake/updated version at openra.net
Yes, and the numbers for that are even more impressive.
And inside story published by The Guardian tells about development cost of about $100m.
The game was bought for £1.5m by a company called Reloaded Productions.
I think, if someone makes a reasonable offer of a few millions for Dawngate, EA will easily sell it. Why sit on an IP which does not generate revenue, if you can atleast reduce the potentional loss you made during development. From a business standpoint, it is just better to sell an IP if you can. Especially if you want to actively maintain it and go for copyright infringements. Or in some cases EA just does not maintain it anymore, aslong as the products aren't commercial. See Command and Conquer. More and more command and conquer games pop up, like C&C: Renegade X or OpenRA: http://www.openra.net/
The whole pack has been updated to run on current systems. I have windows 8 and they all run great. But I really only play red alert 2 on origin and use open ra to play the original and red alert. It gives you skirmish options and makes the game look and play better. And the AI will kick your ass.
You could try OpenRA. It's an open source engine for the old Westwood games like Dune, Red Alert, C&C and they're working to support RA2 and Tiberiun Sun (which you can play now if you look hard enough for it, although it's a bit buggy and hard to get running).
Personally I think it's better than running the original game with hacks because you get 1080p+ resolutions and easier multiplayer
We only track active http://www.openra.net/players/ at the moment, but my plan is to improve those interesting numbers https://github.com/OpenRA/OpenRAWeb/issues/322 though I haven't found the time yet and silently hope someone more competent might take over.
If you ask nicely at http://www.openra.net/community/ e.g. the chat room you can be granted access to the player data to do your own analysis.
Sorry I'm not a fan of RTS games so this might be totally inapropriate but what about an open source implementation of (some of) the Command & Conqurer series?
They even have their own subreddit, /r/openra
I agree about RA2. In case you didn't know, there is an open source remake of RA and Dune2000 called OpenRA. It is pretty nostalgic even with the alterations and I definitely recommend giving it a go.
Right now it is currently Tiberian Dawn, Dune 2000 and Red Alert with Tiberian Sun & Red Alert 2 on the way now updated with modern RTS mechanics. EA wants to beat a dead horse while the community is keeping it alive. (C&Cnet is available as well but it uses the original mechanics) It now has native support for the music for all games and you can import the movie files and single player missions from the original ISOs or game discs which are all available for free now from EA.
you can find the ISOs on various sites, I got mine from here https://cncnz.com/features/freeware-classic-command-conquer-games/ Some single player missions are missing due to them still being worked on for scripts n such. C&Cnet gives you the full game's assets and everything (single player too I think, but it is all base game with updates for modern computers/new online modes, no new mechanics like in the OpenRA builds.) You can also find other ISO files for the games here on a big list: https://github.com/OpenRA/OpenRA/wiki/Game-Content. TB's video is about 4 years old now and the features that are missing from back then are now there.
You can find OpenRA here http://www.openra.net/ if you don't want to deal with the ISOs (use daemon tools to mount them btw if you do) it comes with the base assets and music to play right off the bat.
Nah forget that link. Go install OpenRA. It's an open source RTS engine and they're currently working on getting Tiberian Sun on it. It has Tiberian Dawn and RA on it.
I've installed OpenRA multiple times and there's an active community. Check it out http://www.openra.net/
I love strategy games, always have!
Here is a list of my favourite ones from yesteryear
You can also get the classic Westwood Studios games as an open source download.
The about page lists "new features and gameplay improvements" that weren't in the original:
I'm pretty sure this list is incomplete, there's probably more changes than these. I assume developers will be trying to improve balance as well.
I would say age of empires would eb a first great step. Also - command and conquer: red alert (my fav eva), plus Dune are free and receiving updates http://www.openra.net/ - great early strategy games that aren't as overwhelming as the new ones.
Also - I really kinda enjoyed this free browser based one called Reprisal
I game a lot on Ubuntu and use Steam for most stuff. (plus I'm a game developer). I have a i5 Intel CPU with integrated graphics and It's been working fine and dandy for my kind of games (although obviously it can get a bit slow in graphically intensive games). I've also recently been playing a lot of OpenRA ( http://www.openra.net/ ) which is a remake of the old Westwood games like Dune 2000, C&C, Red Alert and such. (extremely accurate, while adding a lot of QoL stuff to make it more modern). Oh and it's free.
Concerning the first thing to learn about Ubuntu, I would say try to learn all the key shortcuts and ins and outs of the vanilla system (first learn about what the system can do out of the box before starting to customizing it a lot). So I guess the first step is to hold down the super key (windows key) for a couple of seconds. That should pop up a little cheat sheet with all the common Unity key shortcuts.
About the terminal. No need to learn it, but it's really eye opening if you do. :)
Wow some of those have some hardcore nostalgia. For what it's worth you might want to check out http://www.openra.net/ . They are re-doing Red Alert open source and in widescreen. Contains original music too.
There's an open-source CnC remake http://www.openra.net/ you might want to look into.
It's only really multiplayer though, but luckily for you, Tiberian Sun is freeware, and you might be able to find a mod that allows it to run on linux if you really want to play the campaign.
I love Sid Meiers games Alpha Centari myself. If you go to GoG.com, Totalbiscuit's has a list of amazing strategy games, and all on that list are worth checking out. http://www.gog.com/mix/totalbiscuits_definitive_list_of_strategy_games
Supreme Commander 2 is pretty fun also. Available on Steam
Galactic Civilizations 2 has been a good space empire game, but the lackluster "ground invasion" is kinda off putting. Available on Steam
If you want to go in depth with the space empire thing, Sin of a Solar Empire: Rebellion may be the most in depth, complicated, long, and fun space RTS game I've ever played. It is long though, in a small 1v1 match a hour can go by without seeing your opponent. Personally, I play the AI, and in short chunks, like I make each match a campaign. Available on Steam
Battle Realms is a RTS I'm looking into right now. I bought it, just haven't put enough time to recommend it, but it's deff on the "check out" list. Available on GoG
If you wanna narrow down WHAT kind of strategy games, or what time period, or subject matter, turn or real time, It will be WAY easier giving you recommendations. Honestly I'm shotgunning completely different types of strategy games and seeing what sticks. Good Luck in your search though, and hope I could help!
EDIT: Also http://www.openra.net/ is a open source, free Command and Conquer games (old games). Worth a download. I recommend Tiberian sun or Dune.
Way back in the day playing dune 2000, Sand worms were a bitch. But deploying thumpers in the enemy's spice fields and watching their economy cripple was always entertaining. It's has a great reboot through openRA.
OpenRA will have Tyberian Sun mod, so far the RA, dune 2000 and Tyberian Dawn mods are all awesome and very close to the original (with some game mechanic changes/improvements).
What a great time to plug OpenRA!
Free as in freedom and beer, open-source, whatever you want to call it, and they currently have Tiberian Dawn, Red Alert, and Dune 2000 mods all running and working. The game is rebalanced in many places to make it actually fun instead of robotic.
Either get original Dune 2000 from https://gruntmods.com/dune_2000_gruntmods_edition/ (has waaay more features and stuff, even a fan-made campaign for Corrino and Fremen. Smugglers aren't left out either!)
There's also OpenRA's Dune 2000 mod.
OpenRA is the game engine, there Dune 2000 is implemented as a mod.
http://www.openra.net/
OpenRA's website has player activity stats which shows peak player activity.
TooMuchInternet69 mentioned there aren't that many people playing the playtest. In the server browser you can change the server filter to see players on the release version. I've seen people arrange playtest games on Discord, which is where a lot of the competitive players are.
You might be interested in joining the next season of RAGL (Red Alert Global League), a weekly ladder against a pool of similar skilled players. Some info for the recent season is linked in the this subreddit's sidebar. I think the next season is at least a couple months out. Joining the Discord wouldn't hurt though.
No catch, you can find the ISOs on various sites, I got mine from here https://cncnz.com/features/freeware-classic-command-conquer-games/ Some single player missions are missing due to them still being worked on for scripts n such.
You can find OpenRA here http://www.openra.net/ if you don't want to deal with the ISOs (use daemon tools to mount them btw if you do) it comes the base assets and music to play right off the bat.
Ah this reminds me of the lan parties I use to have with my friend, dad and brother.
Recently had a lan party with an old friend and brother (10 years later) we played Red Alert.
If your feeling nostalgic head over to http://www.openra.net and download the rebuilt Red Alert that works on modern pc's with decent resolutions and some nice UI fixes over the original. Its still so much fun!
You can download and play this game, also with multi player over the net, over at OpenRA.net
Also check out some replays:
SoScared Casts and Playtests on Twitch FiveAces Casts on YouTube
Sorry if any dodgy links, on mobile.
Also there are other mods available once you download the application.
It's the original Red Alert, remade by fans with some gameplay improvements. Now the project not only includes Red Alert, but also Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn and Tiberian Sun, as well as Dune 2000. I believe They're also working on Red Alert 2. And best of all, there's quite a few people playing multiplayer!
What are you going to do differently? Because there is some competition:
OpenRA has a pretty good version, you download OpenRA en from there you can download Tiberian Dawn, RA1 and Dune2000 with the click of a mouse. Also the soundtracks.
It supports all resolutions and has working (online) multiplayer and a map editor.
I am not sure were to find game, but you can play it here http://www.openra.net/ also you can get game inside bundle here https://www.origin.com/en-gb/store/buy/c-c-the-ultimate-collection/pc-download/bundle/standard-edition
you could try using wine to play it from cncnet. I don't have a Mac so I'm not to sure exactly how to make work. But if you're willing to wait a while longer it is going to eventually be a part of openRA! And it should run fine on a Mac without having to get third party programs.
Red Alert 2, specifically, is the best in the series. Unfortunately, the Yuri's Revenge expansion does not work on Windows 7+
Also, someone turned Red Alert 1 into a freeware game http://www.openra.net/
Any RTS game.
Also, if you can't beat free, download OpenRA. EA also released the .iso files for C&C 1 and Red Alert (2 of the 3 compatible with OpenRA. Tiberan Sun was also released for free, but not supported yet) for free quite a while back. You might have trouble finding some mirrors though, as the original webpage went down.
Shout out to OpenRA, an open-source version of Red Alert 1:
/r/openra
As you'd expect, it's not resource intensive, so you can play it on tablets and netbooks and stuff. Plays great. There was some initial work on an open source Red Alert 2. Not sure where that's at now.
C&C, RA1 and Dune2K have all been ported to the OpenRA engine. It doesn't have all the campaign levels, I think only the Harkonnen campaign is complete, but each game has a pretty multiplayer. Could be worth a look. Works great on Mac, though read the download page, I think you need to install Mono first.
If you boot the game and your mouse beachballs, just leave it, it's actually doing stuff, I think it has to do this the first time and shouldn't need to do it again. Just give it a few minutes, don't close it, it shouldn't happen again if you let it hang once.
If you would like a dune rts, maybe check out openra
Its is an open source project to clone the command and conquer engine. So far they have the first Red Alert, Tiberian Dawn and Dune 2000 implented. It's not AAA for sure, but it runs well.
would you like to try a fan made remake with a possibility to get numerous extra maps and mods for it? there's OpenRA, but it doesn't have original's full campaign yet, if that's what you're looking for.
Yes.
It's also supports OSX, Various Linux distros and Windows.
Just download from here by choosing your platform and install it.
There is game browser, you can join some or create one to host it yourself.

How old is he?
I downloaded Battlefront 2 for my son (who LOVES the first game), he's 8, and he does pretty well. The same night he caught a glimpse of my screen where he could see me playing Red Alert with his uncle, and was mesmerized by it. I told him I could buy the full version of Battlefront 2 or he could have RA installed on the living room PC.
He picked RA and hasn't stopped playing it. He's obsessed. Continually wanting to play multiplayer and loving how everything works.
It's not all bad, I just think gamers of today aren't given the option of what a lot of us here had, so they're kind of stuck with what's advertised the most, what's in the shop window and what their friends have. There's no other scenario I can think of where my son would have known of RA's existence, let alone had a chance to play it.
Hey /u/vellu-, thanks a ton for taking your time to craft and submit this,
I personally like the overall idea a lot!
It would be best to get in direct contact with the developers on IRC to discuss changes to openra.net.
Oh yes, and there are nice covers such as this one for Act on Instinct - though my favorite is Just do it up which I used to play on guitar ! I'm nostalgic...
On a related note, OpenRA is a great free re-implementation or the C&C series using the original game content - I use it to introduce RTS gaming to my daughters by playing it at home on our Debian Linux workstations.
Not exactly a remake but go check out OpenRA. It's free and you can download all the graphics, if you want music you'll need original copies (old disks from 95, C&C:The first decade, or Origin Ultimate Collection.) They're focusing mostly on multiplayer and getting Tiberian Sun working but it is very playable with some of the campaign for C&C, RA, and even Dune incorporated.
you should look into OpenRA
currently have RA, C&C TD, and Dune, adding RA2, C&C TS currently.
Multiplayer support and some campaign, new balance and mechanics, overall a very nice QoL impeovement over the base game while sticking to the original theme.
If you don't mind older-style graphics, try OpenRA.
You download RA1/C&C95/TibSun-FS for free as well. (These are legitimate and the direct installers from EA's website at the time of release. I just mirror it.)
You can also get the entirety of the C&C franchise for $20 off Origin.
RTS didn't really evolve. It splintered off onto RTT (real time tactics) where you didn't control economy or basebuilding (thinking of Ground Control 2), and morphed into MOBA games like DOTA.
I love RTS, would kill for a good AOE2 remake or rebuild with modern net code.
I also love http://www.openra.net
This is an open source game that allows you to play Red Alert, Tiberium Dawn, and Dune 2000 remakes. Tiberium Sun appears very close to being ready for playtesting. It has good netcode and better balance than the originals. Red Alert is popular enough and you can pay online most of the time.
The fact is classic RTS is still fun and provides deep gameplay and replayability. You can download the 10mb OpenRa installer, run it and you're in. Great to play with friends. It doesn't have modern graphics but I actually like the art style and RTS doesn't benefit from fancy graphics in my opinion. It's like a game of chess.
OpenRA Open Source Recreation of Command and Conquer
Company of Heroes WW2 RTS Game With Modern Graphics
Blitzkrieg Classic WW2 RTS Game
Most rts games are fantasy based so those are the ones i could think of
That's Command and Conquer Red alert.
Made by westwood studios, which was then bought and shut down by EA - thanks ea.
anyways. some awesome people have made an open source version of the game.
here.
it's of course free!
You can also find a more updated, feature-filled, cross-platform version if you download OpenRA instead. It includes Dune 2000, Red Alert, and Tiberian Dawn. OpenRA runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, and BSD.
Yeah, Zero Hour & C&C3 have a really great single player campaign, Especially C&C3/Kane's Wrath expansion, the story really captures you.
And once you're done with normal Zero hour try it with mods, it's great, Especially AI mods.
For the original C&C/Red Alert you can try OpenRA which is an open source replication of the those 2 games and can be found here: http://www.openra.net/
Ensin hieman fiilistely musaa niin mukavampi lukea alla olevat jorinat!
Vanha on parempi kuin nipullinen uusia. Open RA - Red Alert 1 uudelleen muotoiltuna, jonka mm Total Bisctuit kehui. Toki on tuo on aika vanha (3/2/2014) arvostelu jo peli ei ole muuta kuin parantunut. Moninpeli seuraa löytyy aina kun menee lobbyyn.
/r/openra sisältää tuoreempia videoita peleistä.
Rintamalle toverit!
You can also get the first gen C&C games for free in the form of OpenRA, which aims to recreate Red Alert, Tiberian Sun and Dune 2000 for modern operating systems. EA made both games free a couple of years ago so it's also completely legal.
Multiplayer versions (No campaigns and no cutscenes, just skirmish, LAN and online modes) of Red Alert 2 and Tiberian Sun are also available from the XWIS website, but I'm not totally sure if that's also legal or whether it counts as piracy. Although nothing official has been said, EA doesn't seem to care about it as far as I can tell.
DUNE 2000!
The trikes definitely gave it away. This has to be Dune 2000
It's based off the book/movie Dune, includes factions, trikes, and an old guy in a wheelchair.
Red Alert 1 is also free:
http://ra.nv17.com/html/ra/download.html
Also there's an open-source clone game.
Haven't checked it out myself but might as well mention it.
You can use this:
http://nyerguds.arsaneus-design.com/cnc95upd/cc95p106/
It's a trusted mod and is offered in a variety of forms, one of which includes the ISO's of C&C 95 since EA released them for free.
There is also: http://www.openra.net/ But unfortunately you can't play the campaign on it, but it's a great mod for RA, C&C 95 and Dune 2000. (unless someone figured out how, let me know too!)
You're going to have a bad time trying to play Generals in high resolutions though.
here is a great game that shows the awesomeness of pc gaming:
http://www.openra.net/
it is small, fun and very easy to lan play. also custom map maker included in the game is amazing.... and its free
Also have some of the kids bring ps3/4 controllers to show them that they dont have to use mouse / keyboard to play pc games.
Castle Crashers is a great game which i think has a free trial on steam you can download and lan play with.
Also if you gona sit kids down in a room and have them play pc games, have one or two of the computers linked to a larger tv so you dont have to crowd around a screen.
Still, I am pretty sure that today's machines would not sweat if you scale Age of Empires 2 or Red Alert 2 maps up to 100x. This is actually an interesting project, I am tempted to try with one of the open source 2D projects like openra
Check out openRA. it's a fan made remake of the original game and red alert on a engine they built themselves. It add loads of content and it supports online. It also has as kermis have mode for the original and the AI is VERY good. It looks and plays great over the originals.
You can try OpenRA.
Its not a 1:1 remake but does a pretty good job at modernizing an older game. I went back and played C&C:RA using DosBOX several months ago and although it was still fun the lack of a modern RTS UI and updated control mechanics make it a somewhat frustrating experience.
If it's the original you can always get openRA http://www.openra.net its a free remake of the first 3 originals. It's completley user made and is rebuilt from the ground up. Plays and looks much better then the originals. Also with extra content. And best of all it adds a skirmish mode to the original. But if you really want to play the old one there is a color fix by tweaking the ini file. I could find that for you?
If you need your classic C&C multiplayer fix go to openra.net.
A team redid the C&C engine for modern OS, downloads the game assets automatically. Sadly is multiplayer/skirmish only. (supports C&C, C&C RA1, Dune2)
Silos needed.
Fuck.
https://lutris.net/games/openra/ looks good. If you change the website to our current http://www.openra.net one and update to the latest release, I can advertise it on our social media channels for some nice cross-promotion. Also this project /r/openra is a lot older. It started around 2007. The first public release was in 2010 not 2013.
OpenRA. Multiplayer-only C&C, C&C Red alert and Dune 2 remake.
Uses the original assets and downloads them if required (no need for an original CD). Also adds many enhancements.
Edit: Silos Needed
If you are wanting to play anying older then red alert 2 I'd highly recommend openRA. its updates all the older games and adds a new functionality like skirmish mode for the original c&c. It's completley free too! Also /r/openRA
RA2 works for me atleast on lan, but the planes lag the fuck out of the game for everyone in it. My friend recently got it fixed somehow while smashing nVidia driver options but I have no idea anymore how.
So in short, yes it works on LAN. Also http://www.openra.net/
Try OpenRA, if you miss RA1 skirmishing. The AI is pretty decent while it runs with zero issues on modern systems.
They had also ported Tiberium Dawn, Dune 2000 on the engine which runs great. Cant wait to see Tiberium Sun and Red Alert 2 on this engine.
I too miss the older genre of Strategy games. Dune, Command and Conquer, Age of Empires, those were some fine days. I played through the entire CnC series and I am so very saddened now that it is over (it didn't die a honorable death either, EA burned it to the ground and turned their backs on the series) Supreme commander was a pretty good series, and I am currently quite enjoying Planetary Annihilation though it is a bit repetitive.
Have you tried Open RA? Its a pretty interesting take on the older games and I love playing the Open RA Tiberium Dawn version. Takes a lot of good modern ideas and applies them to older gameplay.
I am not so sure about "old school" but my team is working on what i believe is a pretty competitive medieval MMORTS. It contains resource gathering, trade routes, espionage, real time combat, armies, city building and a lot more tactical depth than you might be expecting considering that your trade caravans will have to be guarded and other players can ambush them for resources or just ransack your kingdom.
Definitely not like a browser based game either, its a fully fledged 3d seamless world with 24/7 online play. Take a look?

Im a huge lover of the RTS genre, its part of why I joined the team making this game. I'll keep an eye on this thread so if you have any questions, ask away!
hi, i recently play classic FPS such as Doom (1-2-64 EX- 3 (non BFG and BFG), Quake 3 (such a blast!), Quake 4, Duke Nukem 3d, Shadow Warrior (old one), Deus Ex, System Shock
RTS game such as CnC 1 - RA1 - CnC Tiberian Sun, RA2+Yuri and the mods such as Mental Omega. go check Cncnet
Racing game such as Flatout 2, NFS Carbon
Fighting game such as Brawlhalla (lightweight)
RPG games such as Fallout new vegas and BL2
Anime game such as The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky and its second chapter
TPS games such as RE5 (steam, not the gfwl) and RE6
Parkour game such as Mirror edge
Shoot em up game such as Raiden 3-4-5 and good ol' touhou (yeah this one is bullet hell)
All I play is PC...I don't have any console. I like old strategy games you can find for free. I like 4X games similar to Civilization, RTS similar to Starcraft and Total Annihilation, and turn based strategy, similar to Heroes of Might and Magic. I also play in depth sports simulations like Baseball Mogul and other sports from the Mogul series. A lot of great free games are being developed on the Spring game engine, which is extremely versatile https://springrts.com/wiki/Games http://www.openra.net https://itch.io/games/top-rated/tag-real-time-strategy
For fun and nostalgia, you can download and play OpenRA, an open source engine re-implementation of the Red Alert engine, with modern enhancements and that runs on modern operating systems and hardware.
I see many assets, just look at the website:
http://www.openra.net/images/screenshots/ra-base.png
Or do you mean that I can only play the game if I insert my original C&C2 CD Rom and they are used from there?
