"I have no idea what the biological definition of this term is or when it is and isn't applicable, so rather than do even a cursory Google search I'm going to assume it would apply to humans if it weren't for the SJWs"
From the Encyclopedia Britannica:
> Subspecies are groups at the first stage of speciation; individuals of different subspecies sometimes interbreed, but they produce many sterile male offspring.
Hrm... No, that doesn't sound like it applies to human races. Maybe human races not fitting the definition of subspecies is why they aren't considered subspecies?
More researching brings up a repeated point that significant genetic differences are required, differences which aren't present when comparing humans of different races.
It comes from the greek word apologia. It means, "to defend a position." The definition changed somewhere along the way.
http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=apology
A popular use of this term is the Christian Apologetics. They are not trying to get forgiveness for their position but rather trying to defend it.
Not that it even warrants adding more evidence for why GamerGate is absurd (because you so succinctly wrapped it up) but the Kotaku journo Quinn allegedly slept with never even wrote about her game. Like, the conflict of interest that started this all never even existed.
That's because the self-made wo/man is by and large a myth.
>The report says 22 percent of the [Forbes 400] were born on first base: they came from a comfortable but not rich background and might have received some start-up capital from a family member.
The other 78%, the vast majority, were born with significantly more than that, and that's already a lot. A full 40% of those inherited a significant portion of the money from their family or spouse. Most of the people in the world do not have access to any start-up capital or even the familial support a person needs just to be healthy and get an education during their formative years.

God, I hate that argument that because men go to more dangerous jobs they make more money.
First off, the statistic is usually stated as for people working the same job, women will make .75 to dollar of men.
Secondly, lets look at dangerous jobs, shall we.
The ten most dangerous jobs along with the median salary
Wow, that is not a lot.

Some of these jobs that are very dangerous still do not pay a lot of money. What probably has more of an effect on the pay of these jobs is what the resource they provide is worth on the market and skill sets required for these jobs. Yeah, ceteris paribus, more risky jobs get a higher salary to compensate for the risk of the job. The thing is, it isn't a lot.
For shitbags who try to argue omitted variable bias, they sure do like to omit variables.
Thanks for the quick google, but I'm hesitant to believe most news outlets. I did a quick search and found a study that found "the overall collection rate for all states improved... from 41% in 1999 to 53% in 2004" (Huang & Edwards, 2008), which does support your claim. I had no idea it was so low.
despite that version of etymology probably not being true, it's still a disgusting slur that straight people should never utter in their life, ever.
The thing is, I'm pretty sure OP is using it in a racist way... but the word "niggardly" itself doesn't come from "negro". Source. It predates the word "negro", and comes from Old Norse (probably).
That quote in the comment makes it obnoxious.
You are correct, but I'm white hispanic. I debate with Trump supporters because it's central to my identity. I studied Econ in college, so when people explain to me how deporting "illegals" is good for the economy, I tear them a new asshole. I dismantle their beliefs until they have to choose between admitting that they are wrong, or admitting that they are racist, and I have great fun the whole time I'm doing it. The only reason I'm subscribed to this sub is because it sniffs out the juiciest most perverse racists from the dark corners they hide in. It would be wrong to say I'm empowering racism. I'm only empowering myself.

It seems the original woman hasn't ever spoke directly about it, she's still (and I don't blame her, I would be too) is anonymous.
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/jan/16/aziz-ansari-story-missed-opportunity this article talks about it if you don't have a chance to listen.
I think it varied by region. IIRC, in the North, they were generally more cool with slaves learning to read, especially Bible verses. But in the South, where literacy was relatively low even among whites, it was frowned upon. In some states, in response to slave revolts, they passed laws that would prevent slaves from congregating to learn to read and severely punish any whites or free blacks from teaching them.
I found an excerpt from the narrative of Henry Bibb of his time as a slave in Kentucky. He recalls that a poor white woman offered to teach a Sunday school for slaves, but when word got out that they were learning to read, the police came and broke it up. (It's on page 21 I don't know how to link directly to the page on Google Books and I can't copy/paste it)
Kentucky was one of a few Southern states that didn't pass a law banning slaves from becoming literate, but if Bibb's recollection is correct, it shows that slaveowners feared their slaves becoming literate and were able to at least make it harder for them.
I also searched up this list of acts passed by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1830-1. On page 15 of the .pdf under chapter VI, there is "An act to prevent all persons from teaching slaves to read or write, the use of figures excepted."
I vaguely remembered the etymology on it, but couldn't remember the specifics. I had to look it up, but as with most things, the story isn't clear cut.
According to wikipedia it seems like it's a bit contested, historically people have said it's from the idea of 'hysteria' which is what I'm guess you're alluding to with the whole 'wandering womb' thing, but because of the online etymology dictionary saying it comes from
>histrionicus- "pertaining to an actor,"
I don't know what to believe. :( I'm guessing this guy isn't aware of either origin though.

Just take a look at the titles and ask yourself how much of this stuff you can learn by experimenting with a high school level chemistry lab. If you want to do things hands on, sure, that's fine. But don't fool yourself into thinking you're going to get a "comprehensive understanding" of the subject. Sooner or later, you're going to have to read a book.

It's not nice, it's pretty stupid and judgmental (albeit admittedly), but it's nowhere near as vitriolic as it was made out to be here, or anywhere close to as hateful as the comments in the link above.
I started reading You Are Not So Smart last night. The e-book is only 2$ on Amazon! I'm really excited to see what I learn. Has anyone else read this?
This followed a very sloppy argument I had last night. Someone argued with me all day yesterday in an attempt to defend the neo-nazi's and white supremacist's protest in Charlottesville. I could have probably been less hostile and way more clear in my arguments. But I'm beginning to think maybe it's pointless to argue with someone that dogmatic. They will refuse to change their view no matter what. :(

Instead of dispelling their media-fueled fantasies, judging people based on individual character and adjusting their expectations, they stomp and pout about not getting their own Manic Pixie Dream Girl.

Well actually there's empirical evidence that Black people leave piss-poor tips as compared to Whites; I already knew this to be true from waiting tables but it's nice to see some solid numbers yaknow? for science.
From the linked article:
>This is a touchy issue, but pretending that Black-White differences in tipping do not exist or refusing to discuss this difference openly does not help anyone. Rather, it perpetuates a status quo that harms Black consumers. Specifically, Black consumers are harmed by poor service from servers who do not expect them to tip. Black consumers are also harmed by restaurant chains that fail to open outlets in predominantly Black communities (even aMuent ones) because the chains’ executives anticipate tipping-related difficulties in staffing outlets at those locations.
It makes even more sense when you look up the Alexa stats of the largest Men's Rights blog: A Voice For Men.

A legitimate concern and one lastpass addresses very well in their webpage -- if you chose just one good say 16 character password, even if it was 6 random alphanumeric followed by a string of 10 of the same punctuation, realistically speaking you won't be cracked.
A hacker could somehow use a keylogger, or you could write that one password down, but that's human error and you are screwed anyway.
Personally I can enter my pw using an onscreen keyboard and lastpass will log me in automatically, so with my current setup I am immune to most keyloggers.
Better than the alternative and it is an incredible timesaver.

I may not be able to develop taco-over-DNS but I can at least offer you the recipes for the tacos and the soup. The latter is for strawberry soup but offers alternatives for blueberry soup.
Some additions: for the yogourt sauce on the taco I added some sliced banana and extra peppers, while substituting in lettuce for the cabbage. And for the soup I used pomegranate juice (in much larger amounts than suggested) with around a tablespoon of balsamic vinegar added. I also added some cinnamon to the yogourt. I used frozen blueberries so the juice froze and then melted over the two hours and it came out very well chilled.
EDIT: Oh and I had to use "rockfish" instead of tilapia. Still good.

Definitely. No doubt Clinton has her issues with policies and the like but to say you're going to vote for Trump over her and that you're a liberal? That's ridiculous. With issues I recommend ontheissues.org It's a great place to start your research. And I saw just recently she had a fundraiser with this investment firm that has huge interests in fracking- https://theintercept.com/2016/01/26/hillary-clinton-doing-back-to-back-finance-industry-fundraisers-just-before-iowa/
She hid it from her schedule. Instead, she only showed her meeting fifty AA pastors. Bernie brought this up and that she had this secret fundraiser.
Even with Clinton you can at least try to put the fire out.

It's not really a Reddit thing. It's more "Reddit stealing jokes and running them into the fucking ground because the dumbasses can't tell when something STOPPED BEING FUCKING FUNNY SIX YEARS AGO."
I don't even care about them using the word faggot there, to be honest. In the context of 4channery it's got literally nothing to do with homosexuality or homophobia. Maybe it's just the old 4chan veteran in me, but it just doesn't even phase me. What kills me is that these shitlords NEVER stop reposting the same fucking jokes EVERY DAY. Not really. They reserve the rights to use the photo anywhere on the site, to shield them from being sued for using the images dynamically in news streams etc. You don't actually sign over the copyright to them. From their terms and conditions

This IP License ends when you delete your IP content or your account unless your content has been shared with others, and they have not deleted it.
The 'worldwide licence' is standard boilerplate for photo sharing websites.
Lol, that article is hilarious, a bunch of SEO bullshit trying to sell you online classes. Try using something other than the first link on a Google search when trying to come up with references.
In any case, research into this topic is frequently flawed, serving to reinforce harmful gender assumptions, often in terms so vague that they hardly mean anything. It also reinforces a false gender dichotomy. The reality is that everyone has a mixture of stereotypically feminine and mascualine traits, to the point where labeling one as the domain of men and one the domain of women is stupid and pointless.
There is another problem, which is a part of that article:
> So the next time your wife, boyfriend, or parent starts telling you how you should have done something differently, then refer back to these big differences between men’s and women’s brains.
What they're getting at, and what a lot of sexist attitude reinforce, is this idea that men and women are hard wired to make each other miserable. That is demonstrably untrue, and it simply makes no sense that we evolved that way.
Male homosexuality might be a boon to female fecundity. It is an interesting all around paper.
Anyway I really wish Reddit actually was scientific minded instead of the 'let me pretend I am knowledgeable about a subject I've invested no time in understanding" attitude I see everywhere. There are many suggestions why homosexuality might be evolutionary favorable but biology is hard and biotruths are easy.

Over the past few months my reading and writing schedule has been pretty shaky. I would mainly devote Sunday afternoons to reading but wouldn't find much time to fit it in elsewhere. I was writing occasionally but it wasn't coming naturally and so was stilted and weird.
I read Stephen King's 'On Writing' a few days back and was inspired to shamelessly devote an hour in the morning and evening each day to reading. The change in my writing was noticeable immediately. Since the change I've been able to write about 1000-2000 words a day no problem and it's just flowing naturally. Admittedly I'm still in the easy part of the novel I'm working on, but it's been great fun and I think I can maintain this energy.
Sorry. It wasn't my intent to sound mad. I was on my phone and I was trying to concise and in hindsight I sounded harsh. I just advocating for wariness because this language has been used in the past by people with less than noble intentions. I find the build up to the Iraq and Afghanistan war to be perfect examples. Those on the right pushed this idea of our own moral superiority, this is idea that we would go to war and liberate Islamic women from their burqas and a lot of people on the left, even feminists, bought this hook line and sinker. And of course the wars were never about that and they accomplished nothing in the way of advancing women's rights. Lila Abu-Lughod wrote excellent article on this very topic
Alot of what you are saying I agree with. It actually mirrors Sam Harris's ideas of conversational intolerance and your earlier post was similar to the his attitude in the Moral Landscape. And these are ideas that I really like and view are necessary. However, even Harris got duped into supporting the wars. And that is where I draw the line.
The entire thing is actually pretty horrifying. Women in prison are mostly raped by prison guards.
The real irony is that part of the reason for secession was that the Southern states were upset that some Northern states passed laws allowing them to defy the Federal Fugitive Slave acts that would see slaves that escaped across state lines returned to the states where slavery was illegal. So in essence it was the South at the time that wanted to curtail state's rights.

If you're thinking about the sexuality of cosplay, this link may prove interesting.
I don't think it's sad that women "live down" to the level of reddit's misogyny, because they actually don't. This woman is not debasing her gender by being sexy. Sexy female cosplayers are not insulting their gender by being photographed by everyone at ComicCon and then getting upvoted by people who don't care who she is except soft porn. (Those both apply to men too, by the way.) You've sort of made the distinction between "women" and "women I see on the internet", but I think you need to refine it a bit.
Seeing as most MRAs are between the ages of 18-24 with no college education, most of them wouldn't be able to support a child anyway.

Read how Abelson & Sussman introduce how computers work in their monumental work of pedagogy on the subject, The Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs:
> A computational process is indeed much like a sorcerer's idea of a spirit. It cannot be seen or touched. It is not composed of matter at all. However, it is very real. It can perform intellectual work. It can answer questions. It can affect the world by disbursing money at a bank or by controlling a robot arm in a factory. The programs we use to conjure processes are like a sorcerer's spells. They are carefully composed from symbolic expressions in arcane and esoteric programming languages that prescribe the tasks we want our processes to perform.
I FOUND EXAMPLES OF THIS, THEY WERE OBVIOUSLY DOING IT ONLY FOR THE ATTENTION (ISN'T THAT THE POINT OF EXHIBITIONISM, ANYWAYS? WHATEVS, CIRCULAR LOGIC DON'T REAL)
> I'm still pretty pissed off that you are referring to this gentleman who is minding his own business and waiting for his gf to leave the dressing rooms as "looking creepy near changing rooms".
I was drawing from your comment, in which you sarcastically included "looking creepy near dressing rooms" as an issue.
> This is infuriating.
It really isn't nearly as infuriating as you seem to think it is.
> The mere act of standing near a changing room does not mean that he is being "creepy", which as a term, is not or is ill defined. What defines looking creepy?
Creepy is a pretty easily defined term with an accepted definition. Here is said definition:
creep·y (krp) adj. creep·i·er, creep·i·est Informal 1. Of or producing a sensation of uneasiness or fear, as of things crawling on one's skin: a creepy feeling; a creepy story. 2. Annoyingly unpleasant; repulsive: the creepy kids next door. Source'
So, when a person is described as "looking creepy," their presence is creating a sensation of uneasiness or annoying unpleasantness.
That was taken about 6 months before it got nuked. I believe "jailbait" peaked at the number 2 most popular term directing people to the site behind only "reddit" itself.

this varies from analysis to analysis
honestly, i think the ones that skew younger are more realistic. but that's also a fuck lot of confirmation bias
i also think that opt-in surveys like the reddit survey, and i think that one you linked are a shit tool for determining this type of thing. i feel like it self selects for older users who will go "yea, sure, i'll do a survey" than the f7u12 types who wouldn't even read the post about it.
The metafilter post on this has some great comments:
>"Reddit user "I_RAPE_PEOPLE_II" takes a bold stance in support of the moderator of its 'creepy pics of women' subforum"
>Man, the article writes itself. Headlines get better and better.
I agree that there is a lot of information missing that would strength a conclusion either way. However, I know of no way to determine the gender of people who posted without including themselves in the image.
However, I disagree with the idea that it is the strict ratio of men vs women who post in this manner that is important. My primary objection to the image is the idea that men don't post like the image indicates and the implied claim that any unattended object is owned by a man. I believe the information I posted shows that in real numbers men post more of these pictures, therefore people shouldn't complain about only women posting in a particular way.
Lastly, According to Google Reddit is 68% male and 32% female. Assuming that my information is relatively accurate and that men and women have identical posting habits (which we have no evidence of either way), that would mean that 31% of the population (women) are responsible for 39% of the [person]+[object] posts. While, this means that women are slightly more likely to post themselves in a picture, it is not nearly to the extent that blanket statements about female posting habits should be made in every thread.
I would call someone who prevents that from happening a misandrist with influence. Do you have an example of it? That's how you are useful, because you are vigilant.
your tone and the context are important.
You could've said "it's a misconception that men are more violent on a per incident basis than women'
However, it could also misleading to say 'men and women are equally violent' because the effects of that violence by men and women are disproportionate based on their physical size and strength.
eg. >Violence against women is a significant public health issue. One form of violence against women, intimate partner abuse or domestic violence, is prevalent in Australia. In this article, we summarise the main theoretical and methodological debates informing prevalence research in this area. We explain why studies finding equivalent victimisation and perpetration rates between the sexes are conceptually and methodologically flawed and why coercion and control are fundamental to the definition and measurement of partner abuse. We conclude that while male victims of partner abuse certainly exist, male victims of other forms of male violence are more prevalent. A focus on gendered risk of violence in public health policy should target male-to-male public violence and male-to-female intimate partner abuse. (Aust N Z J Public Health 2001; 25: 498-500)

LOL @ people who both laud the the "free market" and feel refugees are some sort of economic threat. Complaining about people with an order of magnitude lower of standard of living than you surpassing you, as opposed to fully utilizing the resources others in your position take for granted, is the sure way to starve in a "laissez faire" world.
The kind of people who use the term "economic migrant" in such a context are deeply in denial about their "entitlement tax".
Whilst I usually browse with Firefox, I use this extension for Chrome for screenshots. One reason is it's a bit quicker and easier than the Firefox addon, and two because then my hilarious RES tags I give people in Firefox (mra, bag of poop, rapist, paedo, etc) won't spoil the screen grab!

It's honestly amazing how well neo-liberalist propoganda has worked. They really have managed to get people to think neo-liberalism is actually a subset of the progressive views. Was the italicized introduction always there? It feels like it really changes the article from a OkCupid disaster date story into a tongue-in-cheek article about dating, and her own shallowness. Well, up till the final paragraph pretty much featuring her directly saying that.
Still, I'm not gonna defend the article quality. It feels like one of those fluffy editorials in Reader's Digest, one that I would skim through and never think about again.
Hey, come to think of it, why hasn't the Ask Laskas column gotten this treatment? That lady can be mean sometimes.
Tell your parents to take your little bro to the doctor for a serum Vitamin D panel. Vitamin D deficiency might just cause food allergies, and a slew of other problems. Source 1 and a shit load of other problems. Source 2.
It's also the most common micronutrient deficiency in the world in well fed populations because we either live too far away from the equator, or don't get enough sunlight everyday, or both (and also we spend most of our time outdoor clothed).
Tangentially related information time:
Having adequate levels of omega 3 in your diet helps prevent/diminish premenstrual cramps and therefore also some of the moodiness associated with PMS (you're not going to be pissed off if you're not constantly in pain).
It also might explain why PMS is somewhat of a cultural phenomena. In Japan, where consumption of dietary Omega 3 (from fish) is high, "PMS craziness" is pretty much non-existent in their culture.
Thank Google, they decided to index the comments in their news aggregator back in October of 2014, so pretty much any well-organized movement can get their talking points published and ranked in Google's search results. Because as the operators of Youtube they know first-hand that Internet comments are as reputable and insightful as news stories/investigative reports published by The Guardian.
EDIT: While I think third-party metrics should be taken with a very large helping of salt they do show interesting results. Personally I think that Alexa's estimations are more realistic than Compete's in this situation. Either way its pretty clear the website has gone through a hefty growth spirt, and speaking from experience that's usually a death knell for the original crowd.
Oh yes, significantly and they make no bones about it. Their entire sales pitch to artists is "Hey, if we grow, you'll get more plays."

Only non-Vevoed Youtube pays less. Maybe Soundcloud, don't know, they just entered the game.
>Can't vote for them here though :(
On the upside, even if you could vote for them they wouldn't be elected due to being a third party, so you aren't losing out!
Unless you are in an area with an actually sane voting system, I guess.
You would think they would be glad they have someone who goes into more than game reviews and actually knows their shit when it comes to games but because they're trans it's setting them off, if a male wrote the same articles the tone from everyone would be very different

I do hope kotaku try go for a more mature approach at times are I loved it when I was a teenager but now I'm kinda older and like more to chew on than memes and hyperbole.
Always welcome, if you care to have better understanding of such things I seriously recommend reading "Thinking, Fast and Slow" by Daniel Kahneman like really really^really^really^really^really^really^really^really^really^really^really^really^really^really recommend reading the damn book. If you can't buy it,then just pirate it. It's absolutely great read.
Meh they aren't my style, but I'm not offended by their popularity or existence.
But I guess that answers my question.
Hello, I'm a bot! The movie you linked is called The Pruitt-Igoe Myth, here are some Trailers
I think that's the RES addon for desktop. Not sure how its holding up with the redesign, but it gives you endless scrolling, open img/video without opening thread. You can tag people, block/filter people out.
I know all those things.
I also know that Stallman is a paedophilia apologist. I don't think the FSF is a good example for a "good community" for various reasons and not all of them are typical SRS-brand shittiness (there are many ways to be shitty).
Yes, there are good FOSS communities out there (my favourite, personally, is GNOME) but it doesn't change the fact that a lot of FOSS communities and a lot of people in FOSS are extremely toxic. Instead of pretending it's not a problem and that your community of choice is nice and fun, you need to acknowledge the problem and fight to fix it.
Someone posted a link to here in that thread. You should expect a flood of race-baiting trolls and spill-over arguments.

Wow, apparently even has racist lectures. I guess he'll probably never get fired because tenure, but seriously, this is so ostracizing to any students, I wish it was fire-able.
Oh my god, this fucking guy.
>I work in the field of comedy
OK, am I the only one who had Metafilter flashbacks to the "<strong><em>filmic storyteller</em></strong>"-person?
Just me? OK. [](/smith)
take this thread or this one as examples.
There is a pretty decent discussion going on there. It's just much more linear.
