I presume he means the subculture that is poor, trashy, meth-y white people. I say that as a guy from West Virginia. Probably a good time to plug Hillbilly Elegy—great book!
I think his self-preservation instincts were working overtime. The violence isn't being directed at him, so it makes sense not to do anything to draw it towards him - like intervening.
I don't think anything was going through his mind except fear and adrenaline. With a clear head, you're right, removing the weapon is the best option - especially when there was some distance between them.
But he isn't actually thinking. (There's a book called thinking fast and slow that explains this quite well.)
Your stereotype about fat gamers is dumb. You know that video games are played by almost everyone, right? The best MMA fighter of all time plays video games, and streams when he's playing.

A lot of athletic people play video games. It's just like watching movies, or reading a book. Who isn't doing it?
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22313361 >All padding conditions reduced linear impact dosage. Other parameters significantly decreased, significantly increased, or were unaffected depending on padding condition. Of real-world conditions (MMA glove-bare head, boxing glove-bare head, and boxing glove-headgear), the boxing glove-headgear condition showed the most meaningful reduction in most of the parameters. In equivalent impacts, the MMA glove-bare head condition induced higher rotational dosage than the boxing glove-bare head condition.
So I suppose it would be more accurate to say gloves and padding reduce the pressure (rather than force) of a punch by diffusing the impact throughout the glove/padding.
Also see pages 57 and 58 here regarding second impact trauma and the greatly increased risk of head trauma or death due to both sustaining prolonged punishment versus immediate knockout, and the standing 8 count.

I suggest to have a firm mental plan, actions and responses for adverse situations.
For example you could set a mental boundary that if an agitated/aggressive person comes close enough you can hit him fight has started and than the training will take over.

Also, I think it would help you to read a book Meditations on violence. It talks about different motives for the violence, recognizing when it's about to occur, deescalation and lots more. If I remember correctly there is a chapter on fighting the "freeze" as he calls it.
It's a great book, hope it helps!
that was the name, a browser by Adblock Plus

But SOME youtube videos disable watching the video because it appears to play it through another source to avoid ads.
Can't remember the other author but I believe the fighter was Hemingway. (Googled it) Apparently it was James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway whom were basically best friends. Hemingway loved to get sauced as you may know. Well Joyce would go out too and start shit as the MUCH smaller and vastly inferior fighter knowing Hemingway would GLADLY take up for him and fight anyone drunk.
The majority of people in developed countries die from heart disease. Next is stroke, lung cancer, respiratory infection, COPD, Colon cancer, Alzheimer's, diabetes, breast cancer, and stomach cancer. No such thing really as death from old age. Thing about cancer is it really just is a "freak accident". It all comes down to chance, and if you make bad lifestyle choices such as smoking then obviously your chances go up.

Not if you really want to get techiincal. I mean really, Wikpedia?? We need to go deeper...
Street (noun) a public thoroughfare, usually paved, in a village, town, or city, including the sidewalk or sidewalks.
Your clip involves an armed conflict, with a bunch of dudes holding AK's. An armed conflict can be best described as two or more groups engaging in ongoing hostilities. Conversely, streetfights generally occur at random, in public places, and are not part of ongoing wars. Hand to hand occurs in a lot of places...but wars/battles are generally not referred to as streetfights.
Questions?
It's not easy to use at first but there are a few boxing training tools that are basically tennis balls on a string. The reflex ball is a tennis ball on a headband. The double end ball/bag is usually bigger, soccer ball size but they do make small ones with tennis balls as seen here. I do both as a workout during covid.
I recommend a good set of head gear for each of you. My brother and I are both pretty well trained and spar hard weekly. It was a shocking change how much more you can do once you’re not just wearing mouth guards. A pretty cheap set will let you tee off on each other surprisingly hard without injuring each other. I love it.
Too true, but 'subhuman' is a great insult for animalistic behavior.
I am a huge proponent of people reading Ordinary Men when people start to think there is no darkness inside them.
What makes us human is not answering that primal call over stupid shit. What makes us animal is that we all have it in us.
Sorry just saw this comment. You're totally right - I have heard crazy stories. I actually train with Relson here in Hawaii (I know it's the internet and everyone is a ninja here - but check my post history) and his stories are nuts. He says it was like the Wild West in Rio when he was coming of age - people fighting all the time. I have also heard that a lot of the BJJ guys back in the day were obnoxious and aggressive the way you're saying - and that steroids were very much part of the culture.
There's a really good discussion about the "old days" of BJJ in Rio in the book "A Fighter's Heart" by Sam Sheridan - you may be interested in it.
I feel like people just don't do that shit in the US. You can get into some serious trouble for street fighting, so people just try to prove themselves on the mat. Also BJJ is a much more accessible sport. I train with doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc. - those guys just don't generally go out looking for trouble.
If you find any cool videos though - reply here please, I would love to see them.
