Except ExpressVPN is owned by former malware distributor Kape... Glad to see James is only shilling for the best!
Can you name a YouTuber who does it as a full time job and only relies on Adsense? No sponsorships, no Patreon, no ads, no merch, etc? Plus YouTube also implemented a trigger when a swear occurs in the first minute (some even say the first third) of a video that automatically demonitizes the ENTIRE video. THEN you have predatory shits that can auto claim any music or footage without reason, even with fair use, so James loses an ENITRE month's ad revenue while he fights a claim. Did you know just having ALL CAPS or "North Korea" in the title can trip the system and make it so the videos don't appear in sub boxes, home pages or recommended?
AND THEN did know you can make a shit tonne just doing ad reads right? H3H3 make $20,000 per podcast AT LEAST. Why waste 180 hours making a video when it's just going to get taken down or demonitized? Taking sponsorships from ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Honey, Crunchyroll etc allows YouTubers to keep their independence and creativity. GameTrailers and ScrewAttack don't even exist anymore, James can't get contracts from them again. MCNs like Machinima and Channel Awesome don't work in the current YouTube climate.
There's a way he can do ads without annoying the shit out of me with his cringey humor. ExpressVPN isn't even legit, and if he cared so much about Raycons, he would've actually had a brain and used them instead of muting movies and watching them with subtitles to not wake his precious muh kids. Also, he has no business lecturing anyone on loans. It just feels so product placed to here him mentioning something like that.
Really? Interesting! I have used NordVPN for years and have no problem, first time I heard about ExpressVPN is by James (When he started to ads it), it was owned by a malware distributor is interesting indeed. If it is a scam then I wont use it, thanks for the infomation.
because I think YTMND needs to make a comeback, and well, there are some AVGN sites on YTMND, so it gives an opportunity for AVGN fans to restore traffic.
look at this:
I pay for YouTube Premium to help support my favorite YouTubers, and also to avoid having to see ads (even though I can easily install an adblocker). What I hate about these stupid ExpressVPN ads is that they're part of the video, so they don't get skipped by the Premium service, even though I'm specifically paying NOT to see ads. I hate how everyone is doing these types of incorporated ads now. Makes me wonder why I don't drop premium and just go back to ad-blocking.
You are right, nowaday, its everywhere. I see them while watching youtube (or being showed by youtbers), they are on ads, like I dont know, VPN is needed, but they dont need to ads their product that much, I dont think anyone would buy ExpressVPN after watching an AVGN episode, James could do better, you see, some youtubers like Brew put it after the video, make us feel more "confromtable" to enjoy the video without being interrupted by ads.
Thankfully we have the ExpressVPN ad read to remind us of what year we’re really in. I suppose it doesn’t really matter, but there was a time when this really was just something people made relatively without editing down content or having to rely on outside sponsors to accommodate demonetization, which I could swear that monetization wasn’t even a concern or option at some point years ago, but it’s James’ and everyone else’s careers mostly now, so good for them. It’s not a total compromise, but it does signal a sure change.
He was right, too. * Rex Viper. * The Cinemassacre Podcast. * 3 Part Christmas special (Part 3, TBC) * Ridge Wallet discounts. * Express VPN discounts.*
*Every millisecond on teh internets, you are at risk of someone stealing your passwords, identity and bank details, this is were ExpressVPN comes in. ExpressVPN makes it impossible for you to be hacked, get viruses or to have your datter stolen via phishing websites. It's also the number one rated VPN by Techradar, so it has to be good, everyone knows how great Techradar is. Click the link in the description below to get 2 months free, then 33% off for the next 2 months after that
You ever noticed that they copy and paste the same VPN comment from the description as a pinned comment? I mean, already they are breaking pinned comment etiquette, but do they need to tell us the same thing three times?
If the pinned comment is about the sponsor, which you have already mentioned is in the description, then it just overshadows the content.
Any afterthoughts about this episode, Bimmy? Maybe there is pinned comment? "Get 40% of ExpressVPN for a limited time...."
I'm surprised they haven't offered to advertise on BustyJusty's cleavage or offered Kieran to put a ExpressVPN badge sewed on his denim vest.
It's funny...when I was driving home from work the other day I had the exact same thought as the OP. I've been watching AVGN/Cinemassacre from the very beginning (the first episode I recall seeing "live" was The Karate Kid), and there has been a massive tonal shift in the content since Screenwave took over.
At first, I didn't like any of what was going on...BUT...I gave them a chance and have to admit the Screenwave guys (especially Tony, Kieran, and Justin) have grown on me. They all seem to be hard working, talented dudes in their own rights.
The latest AVGN episode (Jurassic Park Trespasser) really got me pondering the state of the channel because, while it has some interesting ideas, it is just not good in my opinion...and the "massive tonal shift" I mention above is never more prevalent in this episode.
As someone already commented, it can be a very tricky thing when attempting to emulate someone else's voice and/or style. Unfortunately, this is where the Screenwave team falls utterly flat...in their attempt to mimic the "lightning in bottle" that James captured with AVGN. There a few decent, Screenwave-led episodes, but they are the exception rather than the rule, and really only serve to remind you of what used to be...which is fucking bittersweet at best.
So, what can be done to recapture that AVGN magic? I think the only answer is the one that's least likely to happen: James needs to write and produce the episodes once again. It's his voice, style, and passion that everyone loves, right? Failing that, we will continue to see the gradual decline in the quality of the AVGN episodes that's been painfully evident since Screenwave took over.
And just to be clear, while I am a huge fan, I'm not just whistling Dixie here. I've taught screenwriting and creative writing. I've also written both for (and about) video games and movies.
If I was obsessed with James, I'd be downloading ExpressVPN, buying Raycons, loving the podcast, Rex Viper, every single AVGN, worshipping the slobs, and totally dismissing and ignoring the plagiarism. Oh that's right I do none of those things.
Once again, not what I said. My comment was literally directed at no one but OP who obviously knows about my topic. Never said everyone should. Just said it's an option, but again, my comment was for OP. If you're going to keep jumping to conclusions, here's something you may like (https://www.amazon.com/Initech-Jump-Conclusions-Office-Space/dp/B07GL3CBBZ).
>But why is that a bad thing?
It's not bad, because the REAL bad thing is hackers, corporations and governments stealing your private data. ExpressVPN allows you to change your IP address, making you harder to track, securing your privacy.
Man I gotta say he's got a painfully inefficient workflow.
Wish he could get some consultation from film pros to revamp his entire filming setup.
Like just a handful of these and his drop ceiling would save so much time lighting, mounting mics etc
Or instead getting a small tripod dolly like one of these shitty things https://www.amazon.ca/Neewer-Professional-Adjustable-Camcorder-Lighting/dp/B00KW2O9B2 so he can easily roll it around the basement to setup different shots.
And get wireless lav mics!, setup multiple shotguns and run everything into that multichannel tascam and run the output into the camera as a reference track and have the individual audio tracks on the tascam for specific channels.
Also get a quick release for the teleprompter stand so you can just pop the camera out of it and leave it setup! And get a USB foot pedal for controlling the scroll speed!
Like there are so many workflow improvements just off the top of my head that would save hours per day. I mean its easy for me as a professional to know all this stuff, wish James would somehow get a sitdown with someone who could just entirely revamp his filming -> post pipeline.

Sounds like a very contemporary story
This is by far one of the better episodes they have produced in a while. The establishing shot of him putting the game in the "Nintoaster" and his facial expressions whenever something stupid happens to him... it's a callback to classic AVGN. It works. Even with the more modern additions like the ExpressVPN sponsor inserted, this episode feels more like the AVGN that people were looking for. Could future episodes also look like this? A return to face? Please and thank you.
Hey,
Wanted to let people know the AVGN X2 BD has dropped in price, whether this is a temporary thing or not, I don't know:
Good news:- Skool Daze has just had an official retro remake "Skool Daze Reskooled" which is available for both Android and Apple iOS phones and tablets https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.involutionteam.skooldaze https://itunes.apple.com/app/id1159402018
